Our own Shep Maxwell, 3 year old son of County Agent Cody Maxwell and wife Logan, will did the honors of the drawing. The winner’s name drawn was Jeremy McCain of Durant, Oklahoma. ELECT
REPUBLICAN
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank EVERYONE who came out and voted in last week’s Primary elections. We are so blessed to live in a country where WE THE PEOPLE get to decide whom we will entrust as leaders and in what manner they shall govern! I am overjoyed that the residents of Precinct One demonstrated their trust and confidence in me to serve as their Commissioner by casting the majority of their votes in my name. Thank you so much! While I may have received the most votes, I was just a few short in reaching the 51% necessary to avoid a run-off. I must now ask for EACH AND EVERY ONE of you to please demonstrate your support again by returning to the polls on May 26th. Early Voting will begin Monday, May 18th but will only last one week, ending Friday, May 22nd. Until then, I will continue making myself available to all who would like to discuss our great plans for Fannin County! Let’s get together, share ideas and...

From Helplessness To Hopefulness
By Bro. Bill Beasley
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through
one man sin entered the world and death through sin, and thus spread to all men because all sinned. In the Book of Romans, Paul gives us many thoughts that speak to man’s need for a Savior. I have chosen Romans 5:12 as my text verse for this week’s article. What Paul is saying is that “Adam’s sin made us helpless, but through what Je-
sus has done for mankind, He has given us a spirit of hopefulness. All of us are under the sentence of death, but by Jesus’ crucifixion on Calvary, He has purchased eternal life for us. Since Adam’s sin, God has spoken to us in many ways. In Isaiah 53, we have the prophecy of God’s suffering Son. In John 1:14, the Word became flesh and

Next week is St. Patrick’s Day and I usually try to find a green recipe. Guacamole is the best I can do. This one is simple, but should have a great taste. It calls for only one avocado, but it seems like it may need a little more. I haven’t made this recipe, so I’m not sure. I have been known to put bacon bits in Guacamole, too. Hee Hee! GUACAMOLE 1 large ripe avocado 1 small onion, minced ½ tsp. garlic salt 1 T. vinegar 2 T. salad oil ½ cup water Mash avocado and place in a medium-size bowl. Add minced onion and rest of ingredients. Mix well until thoroughly blended. More water may be added to reach your desired thickness. Place avocado seed in bottom of guacamole to keep the mixture from turning brown. Cover and refrigerate. Use as a dip or a dressing for salad. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

Nashville in their prayers. Commissioner Magness encouraged people to get out and vote. Judge Moore said there was a good crowd at the Skywarn training session last week. He also attended a 911 Telecommunications banquet last week. The Honey Grove Library and Learning Center is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from the J. Frank Dobie Library Trust for $10,000 for the purchase of books. These funds will be used during the next year to purchase books for the Library for the use and enjoyment of all of our patrons, including children, teens and adults. Although we live in the day of the internet and the phone, here in Honey Grove many of our patrons still want to read from a hard-copy book, and the Library will continue, of course, to make actual books available to our patrons. J. Frank Dobie was a legendary folklorist, writer, and newspaper columnist best known for his many books depicting the richness and traditions of life in rural Texas during the days of the open range. Mr. Dobie, born in 1888, loved reading and books from an early age. Growing up on a ranch in rural Live Oak County in

Donations made during the month of February 2020 to the Oakwood Cemetery Association in Honey Grove were for Jane Hagenswald Medina and Martha Neal. If you would like to make a donation for a family member or other loved one, please mail your donation to Oakwood Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 96, Honey Grove, TX 75446. Please remember that March is one of our semi-annual months each year to remove out of season or faded floral tributes from the cemetery. Weather and wind really take their toll on these items and eventually they must be removed. Our mowing season also begins in March. Any objects left at the cemetery that impede mowing will be removed. Thank you.

VICE
southwest Texas, he learned firsthand how vital public libraries in small, particularly rural, areas are to their communities. The J. Frank Dobie Library Trust was established by Mr. Dobie in 1963, when he wrote his will such that the majority of his substantial estate would go to the support of small Texas libraries for the express purpose of purchasing books. When he established the trust, Mr. Dobie said, “Just think. Years from now, a book bought with Dobie Trust funds may open the mind of some young person and change the direction of his life.” A major criterion for the grants, which are quite competitive, is the extent to which the library is supported by its community. Being selected to receive a Dobie grant thus reflects not only the importance of the library to the community it serves, but also the strength of the entire community. The support of the community for the Library’s Capital Campaign to renovate the Library buildings is just one example of the Library’s community support.

Volunteers needed to help clean up this 170-year-old cemetery that has been neglected for over 40 years. Good progress was made on our first work day last month with piles of brambles, trees, and undergrowth removed from parts of the cem-
etery; but many sections are still untouched. Our goal is to clear out as much as possible before a perimeter fence goes up in April. Shilo Cemetery is located southeast of Bonham on the Blackmon’s property, about 1/3

curriculum and are designed to motivate students as they acquire higher levels of knowledge, to challenge students to confront issues of importance, and to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of specific skills. The UIL Robotics program is believed to do exactly that (UIL Website). Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology (BEST) is a school robotics competition whose mission is to engage and excite students about engineering, science, and technology as well as inspire them to pursue careers in these fields. Through participation in BEST’s project-based STEM program, students learn to analyze and solve problems utilizing the Engineering Design Process, which helps them develop technological literacy skills. It is these skills that industry seeks in its workforce. Each fall, more than 850 middle and high schools and over 18,000 students participate in the competition (BEST website).
Trenton High School celebrates their second UIL BEST Div I (1A-4A) Robotics State Championship in the past three years. BEST Robotics’ President and Executive Director Janne Ackerman presented the UIL State Championship Trophy to Kailee Bennett (President) and Catherine Finley (V.P.) and the rest of our team in front of our community at the THS Gymnasium. Additional BEST dignitaries in attendance were Otis Gorley, Mary Gorley, Garry Ackerman, and Graham Gadd. Early exposure to handson learning and STEM education is one of the best ways to engage students and ultimately set them on a long-term path for success in college and a career of their choice. Robotics programming allows students to receive exposure to real-life problem solving in a competitive, fun environment. UIL activities exist to complement academic

Gates have been set in place and will be locked Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. There is a high volume of student traffic walking from the high school to the fieldhouses and stadium. For example, during the fall this includes football players, the band, drill team, cheerleaders and P.E. students. Closing the road will allow them to move safely between sites. Off season football, soccer and track athletes go to the stadium in the winter and spring. Gates will be open on football game nights, weekends and holidays. A special thank you to my family, close friends and work family who stood by me, attended candidate forums for support and most of all for being positive and professional throughout the campaign.
I wish both my opponents the best in whatever they choose to do going forward and I thank you both for wanting to serve this county and putting yourself out there to run for public office. I will be out picking up my signs over the next few days and I very much appreciate all of you that requested signs and proudly displayed them in your yards, at your business and on your property. Thanks again for your support and thanks to everyone for voting. Political ad paid for by Re-Elect Mark Johnson campaign, Katherine Johnson, Treasurer

Public Notice – Project Designations Bonham Economic Development Corporation In accordance with the Development Corporation Act, Sections 505.158 and 159 of the Texas Local Government Code, the Board of Directors of the Bonham Economic Development Corporation will designate two separate “projects” each of which will “promote new or expanded business development“ (e.g. targeted infrastructure) as defined by the statue, during the regular board meeting scheduled for Monday, March 16, 2020 at 5:30PM in the Bonham City Hall located at 514 Chestnut Street, Bonham, Texas, 2020 Project #1 ~ Bonham Chrysler (South) (automotive sales & service; new and used vehicles and support products & services associated therewith). This facility remodel including; engineered drainage enhancements, lighting improvements and structural remodeling and partial facility reconstruction, the cumulative effect of which will greatly improve (‘fix’) existing drainage conditions along and on the surface of the southbound roadway of TX Hwy 56, promote traffic safety along the highway frontage of the facility and create a better lit and more inviting entryway to both Bonham Chrysler (South) and into the City of Bonham along this vital traffic arterial. It will retain existing jobs within the local economic base, is forecasted to increase sales tax revenue primarily to the state but also the local sales & property taxing entities through the additional capital investment by Bonham Chrysler at this facility. 2020 Project #2 ~ West 10th St/Yerrabella Lift Station & FM Line – Upsizing of certain targeted public infrastructure, thereby increasing transmission system’s capacity to serve additional areas of Bonham not presently served and whose sanitary sewer needs would otherwise exceed said transmission system’s (lift station & Forced Main lines) capacity. This Project will nearly double the potential sewer service area that is west of TX Hwy 121 and in the vicinity of 10th & 12th Streets thereby enhancing future development. It piggybacks off a current public-private partnership to facilitate construction of 75 1,2 and 3 bedroom residential apartment units, and will add an estimated $6.5 million new capital investment to the local tax rolls and will have a near-term positive impact on efforts to grow the Bonham workforce. Additional information will be provided at the Public Hearing for each project. If you have questions about the “project” designation by BEDCo you are invited to call Steve Filipowicz, Exec. Dir. -Econ Dev. City of Bonham/BEDCo (903) 640-0717

Pre-emergent herbicides are applied before weeds germinate. Springtime pre-emergent applications prevent both grassy and broadleaf annual weeds. For best results apply herbicides when the soil temperature is 55 degrees or above, for at least 36 to 72 hours, typically between mid-February to mid-March. If weeds have already sprouted and are visible, pre-emergent herbicides will not solve that weed problem. Before buying a pre-emergent herbicide, read the label carefully to determine if the chemical is appropriate for the type of grass and soil being treated. Each label will tell which types of grasses that chemical is safe to use on. Pre-determine how much to purchase by measuring the total square footage of the area to be treated. Use best estimation for irregular areas. Check application equipment to make sure it is clean, in good-working order, and the calibration mechanism works properly.

From left, Kevin Smartt, Steve Collida, Sandy Barber, Sherry Capehart and Bill Wilson Press Release - McCraw Oil and Kwik Chek have been hosting an annual charity golf tournament for 24 years. CASA has been the beneficiary of the event for the last 12 years. The most recent tournament raised a grand total of $62,000 for CASA programs, which brings the 12-year grand total to $622,000. In recent weeks, the leaders of these companies have been presenting checks from the tournament proceeds to local CASA programs across the state in the communities where they do business.
