“We are so proud to be chosen for this amazing opportunity,” said Library Director Jennifer Reeves. “This grant will allow our library to get to know our residents with disabilities better. It will help us improve our services to ensure this population feels welcome and comfortable in our space.”

As part of the grant, Bonham Public Library staff will take an online course in how to lead conversations, a skill vital to library work today. Staff will then host an in person and virtual conversation with residents about their thoughts on how they would like to see the grant funds used to improve the building facilities for easier access for those with disabilities.

Creating an accessible and inclusive environment is essential for supporting individuals with disabilities. Introducing accessibility measures into a building can significantly benefit these individuals and make the building more inclusive.

Over the years the staff have helped individuals open and hold the heavy front doors, assisted individuals up and down the stairs, and helped others navigate the study room doors. Through this amazing opportunity we will finally be able to address one or more of these issues.

If you are interested in getting involved or taking part in the conversation, please contact Jennifer Reeves at jreeves@ cityofbonham.org, or visit www.bonhamlibrary.net for more information.

Since 2014, ALA’s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative has re-imagined the role libraries play in supporting communities. Libraries of all types have utilized free dialogue and deliberation training and resources to lead community and campus forums; take part in anti-violence activities; provide a space for residents to come together and discuss challenging topics; and have productive conversations with civic leaders, library trustees and staff.

“Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) in collaboration with the Association for Rural and Small Libraries (ARSL).”

12. Discussion and possible action regarding implementing a Burn Ban in Fannin County – Emergency Management Coordinator: Fannin County Emergency Coordinator Troy Hudson explained how last Wednesday he received a call from National Weather Service alerting him to a drier forecast than what had actually occurred. After touching on there having been 21 fires since the start of the year and how easily fires can erupt in dry conditions when people are burning debris in

windy conditions, he advised no-one attempt outside burns when wind are greater than 23 mph. He commented on a recent fire caused by someone burning in windy conditions that threatened the town of Randolph and caused residents to evacuate their homes. He then noted that because of the recent rains and the rain in the forecast, consideration for a burn ban could be put off till next week. Judge Cunningham then commented on how subdivisions need water before noting how the creation of a new MUD going in on the western side of the county had been advertised in the Fannin

County Leader. He asked Troy what he knew about a large development being proposed in that area. A lengthy discussion then ensued about the fire dangers involved when homes are built in the country without proper water facilities in place. Though not confirmed, it was noted that it was heard that the development in question was one that would have 3,200 homes.

All About Dogs

Doggie Dental Hygiene

Most of us have encountered a dog with really bad breath.

The cause of this is always some level of periodontal disease, meaning 'tooth and gum related', but this ultimately can cause some serious health issues for your dog. Untreated dental disease not only causes

tooth loss, it can lead to painful abscesses and systemic infections throughout your dog’s body. Bacteria from bad teeth, winds up in Fluffy's bloodstream, and can affect her organs in a dire way.The lungs, brain, heart, her muscles, etc., are potentially at risk from bacterial infection stemming from periodontal issues. If tooth bacteria in her bloodstream gets to her heart,

pamperedpawsdoghotel.com

this can be a serious problem. A condition known as 'Bacterial Endocarditis' (infection of the heart valves) can ensue and is usually fatal. Additionally, if a dog has periodontal disease, over time, the bacteria in her saliva will produce toxins which are easily ingested when she swallows. This again becomes a systemic issue and certainly shortens her life.

The first signs of potential oral problems start with plaque which is just a sticky deposit on the surface of Fluffy's teeth. Next comes tartar, which is a calcified deposit on her gum line. It's usually brownish. Left unattended, this leads to decay. The next step in your dog's deteriorating dental health, is gingivitis, meaning inflammation of the gums. Things usually go downhill from here.

So how do we head this off?

I think it's important to have kibble in your dog's diet and also things to chew on that can aid in keeping the plaque

and tartar down. Bully sticks, bones, rope toys and hooves are good for this. Most dogs who have lost teeth, commonly have been largely on wet and canned dog food. It's not a bad idea to brush Fluffy's teeth periodically. You can get her used to the idea by briefly rubbing her teeth gently with your finger for a few days. After that, you can graduate to a finger brush from the pet store, and later if able, a doggie toothbrush. You can find dog toothpaste at the pet store. (Human toothpaste is bad for your dog.) They also make doggie dental wipes. In the beginning, keep the tooth brushing sessions brief and upbeat, with plenty of positive feedback. Many times a dog will come to enjoy having their teeth brushed. - If your dog is a little older and her teeth are already loaded up with tartar, more than likely, your vet will have to do a cleaning.

Fannin County Precinct One

Road Work updates for Week ending 3/12/2024

As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the prior week. As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard.

We have rented a mini-excavator for a few weeks and have been working on drainage issues on CR 4300, 2040, 1450 and 1120. In most cases, a backhoe’s size makes it hard to position for many of the jobs we need to do without creating a mess. Next week

we want to use it to start putting in some culverts that need replaced, also.

Brush that had been cut has been picked up on CR 2225, 2200, and 2605. Thanks to Jerry Magness, Commissioner Precinct 3, we have started using a grader blade to collect the cut brush into piles and then use a tractor with a grapple to load in a dump trailer. A lot less physical work is involved in doing it this way.

Dale McQueen, Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One 903-965-7030

NOTE: All Commissioners are encouraged to submit updates from their Precinct.

Publication is free as a service to County residents and their Commissioner.

TANGERINE-GLAZED EASTER HAM with CARROTS

1 (8 to 10 lb.) smoked ham, bone-in, skin on Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 bunch fresh sage leaves

¼ c. extra-virgin olive oil

1 c (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut in chunks

2 tangerines, sliced thin, seeds removed

2 c. tangerine juice

2 c. light brown sugar, packed

1 c. water

¼ tsp. whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

11 or so peeled carrots, fresh

Preheat the oven to 300°. Put the ham in a large roasting pan, fat-side up. Using a sharp knife, score the ham with cuts across the skin, about 2-inches apart and ½-inch deep. Cut diagonally down the slashes to form a diamond pattern; season the meat generously with salt and pepper. Chop about 8 of the sage leaves and put it in a bowl; mix with the oil to make a paste. Rub the sageoil all over the ham, being sure to get the flavor into all the slits. Bake the ham for 2 hours. Now there is plenty of time to bang-out the tangerine glaze. Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chunks of butter, tangerines, tangerine juice, brown sugar, water, and spices. Slowly cook the liquid down to a syrupy glaze; this should take about 30 to 40 minutes. After the ham has been going for a couple of hours, pour the tangerine glaze all over it, with the pieces of fruit and all. Scatter the remaining sage leaves on top and stick the ham back in the oven and continue to cook for 1.5 hours, basting with the juices every 30 minutes. Scatter the carrots around the ham and coat in the tangerine glaze. Stick the ham once again back in the oven and cook until the carrots are tender, the ham is dark and crispy, and the whole thing is glistening with a sugary glaze. Set the ham on a cutting board to rest before carving. Serve the carrots and tangerine glaze on the side. I hope some of you will make this for your Easter lunch.

ENJOY!!

His books are written under pen name Robert Scribe. Rev. Bob wrote five of his novels in one year. He stated writer’s cramp was a reality that year. His novel, Glory, is the only book he’s written which is Texas based. In it, he mentions the First Christian Church of Honey Grove and how it experiences much growth during the span of years in the book. All of Rev. Bob’s novels are available for check-out at the Honey Grove Library very soon.

Dear Editor:

The Smokehouse Creek Fire has left a devastating mark on Texas, claiming 1.3 million acres, countless homes, and precious lives. Its sudden onset reminds us of the unpredictable nature of disasters.

If you think it can’t happen to you, please think again. As a volunteer with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, I can’t stress enough the importance of disaster preparedness. In addition to planning for yourself, remember to prepare for your animal companions. Pack an emergency kit that contains their medical records, food and water, bowls, medications, first aid supplies, and comfort items. For sanitation purposes, pack newspapers, paper towels, and trash bags. For cats, include litter and a litter box. Animals will likely die if abandoned during an evacuation. Take them with you—keeping dogs on a harness and leash and keeping cats and other small animals in secure carriers, as frightened animals may bolt.

Never leave animals tied up or confined. Fires, falling debris, and rising floodwaters can quickly turn deadly, especially for animals stuck on the end of a chain or in a pen. Cut fences and open stalls to allow large animals at least a chance to escape.

A bit of preparation today could save lives tomorrow.

Sincerely,

The Extended Invitation

Paul explains that God has a desire for all to go to heaven. He wrote to Timothy these words concerning God, “Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:4). Paul, then explains the simple truth, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time” (1 Timothy 2:5-6).

Jesus invited those that heard him, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke

is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).

John records for us the step that God has taken for the salvation of all men, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

The message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). Paul reminds us that the gospel is powerful, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).

After the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus told his disciples, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all

nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world” (Matthew 28:18-20). Mark records for us, what Jesus commanded to be taught, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned (Mark 16:1516). John records that words of Jesus, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). The Lord invites. We must hear and open.

Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Answer the Call”

Hello everyone!

The Bible tells us in Isaiah

6:8, “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?

Then said I, Here am I; send me.”

When it comes to spreading the gospel, Isaiah’s response to the call should also be our response. In Matthew 28:1820, we are commanded to go and spread the gospel to all nations however we possibly can. We may not all have the same abilities, whether it be preaching, teaching, or through music, but we must sow that gospel seed by any means necessary. As I have

said before, some people may not be receptive to what we are presenting to them, but as long as we get the message out there, our efforts will not go in vain.

I feel led to go in a slightly different direction this week. I wasn’t sure what to title this article at first, but then the Lord reminded me of this song that was recorded by Gold City back in 1991.

“I don’t know why we do what we still do, and ignore the One that pleads with me and you; yet He never speaks in anger or distress, but His ears await with patience for our hearts to tell Him, “Yes.”

Answer the call, tell Him you’ll go. No longer stall, Jesus longs to know. Make Him your choice, hear His still voice.

Once and for all, answer the call.”

If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit us and be a part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Bro. Josh Stevenson

What The Bible Says About Character

Character is what defines you. It’s what people see in you. It’s what people will say about you after you pass away. Character is one of the most important things you have. How are you investing in yours? Do people see your faith in what you do? Is your character reflected in how you serve the Kingdom? Remember that when you pass away, Jesus will either say, “welcome brother/sister; job well done” or “I never knew you; be gone!” You have right now to decide where your future is.

Romans 5:3-5 – “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Galatians 5:22-23 – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

The Lord’s Prayer

Matthew 6:9-13

True character is shown in how you act in any situation. Actions do speak louder than words in many circumstances and you and I have to be on guard against the devil so that when adversity comes our way we can still exhibit the fruits of the spirit in word and deed. How can we shine for Jesus if we are showing the world darkness through our actions?

Proverbs 28:6 – “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.”

Matthew 12:35 – “The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.”

You can fool men many times with your “character” but you can’t fool God. He’s sees your heart. He knows your intentions. “Has it ever occurred to you that nothing occurs to God?”

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

OBITUARIES

JACK WALTER PATRICK

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that our dad, Jack Walter Patrick, passed through the gates of heaven on the morning of March 7, 2024.

After a courageous 5 month battle with cancer, Dad was surrounded by all of his favorite people when he took his last breath here on earth. We’re devastated, but we know this loss isn’t just ours. This loss will affect our community and each person that knew him, because that’s exactly who Dad was. Dad touched the lives of every person in his path. Dad had this way of making every person he met feel seen, loved and appreciated. He was everyone’s best friend.

Jack was born in Tyler, Texas to Jackie Ray and Dorothy Ann Patrick. He grew up in Mineola, Texas where he raised cattle with his dad and led his little league baseball team to a state championship. In high school, he joined the rodeo scene and pulled his horse trailer across the country to take titles in tie-down roping. After high school, he went on to Texas A&M, where he was apart of the university rodeo team and studied agri-business and “campusology” as he liked to call it. He had a lot of fun.

After graduation from A&M, Jack and two of his best friends moved across the country to New Jersey to start their first corporate jobs at American Cyanamid. Realizing this cowboy didn’t belong in the city, he took the first available transfer opening to a small town in Kansas. He always said that move was the best thing he ever did, because that’s where he met the love of his life—our mom. Somehow Dad convinced that lifelong Kansan to move to Texas and start a life together. They landed in Paris, Texas and became active members of the local Methodist Church. Soon, they bought land in Honey Grove, Texas, where they would go on to build a house and raise their three kids. Mom and Dad celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this past year. We’re so proud of their marriage and know that we, without a doubt, had the best childhood because of them.

The rest of his life, Dad pursued a career doing what he loved. He made his living in ag-sales, which supported his hobby—farming. He loved the outdoors, the farming community, each of his co-workers from Milford Ag, Estes and Helena, and all of his customers. Dad made having a job look like so much fun. He made everything so much fun.

Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Ann (Cook) Patrick and father, Jackie Ray Patrick. He is survived by his loving wife, Amy Lanell (Keller) Patrick of Honey Grove, Texas, his three children, Jack Carter Patrick and wife Shelby Olson Patrick of Buda, Texas, Page Keller Patrick of Dallas, Texas, and Benjamin Walter Patrick of College Station, Texas, and his sister, Veta DeAnn Patrick of Mineola, Texas.

His pallbearers were Jerad Johnson, Mike Johnson, Steve Merrill, Kyle Milford, Tony Moskal, Craig Moody, Chris Strickland, and Zach Whitlock. His honorary pallbearers were Billy Bob Aycock, Mike Dempewolf, Fred Fore, Ricky Hevron, Rodney Patrick, Mark Reece, Randy Roper, Alan Thomas, Tom Thompson, and Chuck Vanover.

We held a service to celebrate Dad’s life at Christian Fellowship Church in Paris, Texas on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.

Dad was the life of the party, even when there wasn’t one—he always brought the atmosphere. We’ll miss him so much.

Cooper GOOD. Water clear; 60 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Blue and channel catfish are biting cut shad in the timber.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 55 degrees; 0.55 feet below pool. Crappie are in 3-15 feet of water with some fish setting up on spawning beds. The bite is not on fire, but some limits are being taken in the shallows with jigs and minnows. Prespawn fish roaming some hanging on brush 5-15 feet. Sandies are spawning in the creeks on the North end. Use a 4 pound mono and spinners and small jigs 1/80-5/8 ounce depending on current. minnows under a bobber, or minnows Carolina rigged with small split shot all on 4-6 pound mono lures. Hybrid stripers are also invading the creek systems trying to spawn as well.

Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 0.48 feet above pool. Late Tawakoni is fishing good and continues to warm up into a solid spring pattern. The hybrid striper and white bass bite has been hit-and-miss depending on warm temperatures sticking around. If we have warm temperatures staying around longer than three days our fish have been very active. Swimbaits and slabs have been the ticket in 30 feet. Cooler days the fish have been inactive. The trophy catfish catches are winding down. We did see fish up to 58 pounds last week. The shallow water has been fair with fresh cut gizzard shad. The eating size blue catfish bite has been good in 10 feet or less. Small pieces of cut bait are working best, and the prepared bait bite is improving.

Texoma GOOD. Water normal stain; 57 degrees; 1.35 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is good drifting shad along flats and ledges in 20-35 feet of water. Anchoring in deeper water for smaller fish on flats in 45-50 feet of water. Swimbaits and bucktail jigs are working on structure and points in 1020 feet of water. Crappie fishing is good in the creeks and on shallow brush in warmer and dirtier water. Jigs under slip corks on any laydown from the bank or stick up in 1-5 feet of water. Catfish are slow on cut gizzard shad and prepared baits. Fish are still full on

BONHAM -- Needing two wins to extend Bonham's return to the softball postseason last spring didn't faze Reyleigh Shockley.

Down a game in the bestof-three bi-district series, she took the circle twice on one day -- at two different locations, separated by an almost 50-mile bus trip -- and allowed zero earned runs over 14 innings to Paris Chisum, helping the Lady Warriors advance to the next round.

"She's always calm, cool and collected," said Bonham softball manager Micky Englutt. "I think that makes her able to move to the next level."

The senior signed her national letter of intent on March 8 to play softball and pitch for Paris Junior College, with family, friends, classmates, coaches, administrators and others present inside the Leonard A. Gerner Gymnasium inside Bonham High School.

"She's done everything for us: Played third base, shortstop, first base and last year

became our primary pitcher," said Englutt, as he addressed the gathered crowd.

"She's one of the most coachable players," he said. "She does whatever she is asked and does so with the intent of getting better.

"We are proud of her moving to the next level."

ma Extreme and American Freedom, credited the environment she has experienced while playing for the Lady Warriors as helping prepare her for collegiate softball.

"This level of play has been close to how college will be: very fast paced," said Shockley. Likewise, she credited the environment she found at PJC as making playing for the Lady Dragons -- nationally ranked for the third-straight season -- the right choice for her.

"The coach was so nice and supportive and I got to meet the players. They were so welcoming," said Shockley. "I love that it's in Texas and so close to home."

Note: Reyleigh Shockley had 302 strikeouts, a 2.19 earned run average and 38 wins while pitching for the Lady Warriors, through March 7. She also had a .353 batting average.

Even as Shockley has handled different roles each season for Bonham, her honors for her efforts during District 11-3A play have escalated. She garnered second-team selections as a freshman and sophomore,

respectively, at third base and shortstop. As a junior, Shockley equated one of two pitchers honored by 11-3A with a superlative, as the team reached the area round for the first time since 2019.

Leonard senior Olivia Pye made the first team to lead Fannin County players in the District 11-3A girls' basketball awards for 2024.

Junior Parker Evans, senior Makalee Sadler, freshman Riley Brown and junior Cheyanne Clark of Leonard each garnered a secondteam selection, after the Lady Tigers forced a fourth-place play-in with Howe after defeating said opponent in their 11-3A finale a few days earlier.

Junior Hingrid Pedraza, senior Abi Dona and freshman Parker Patton of Bonham joined Leonard sophomore Kylie Houser as honorable mentions.

ALTERNATIVE LANGUAGE NOTICE Alternative language notice in Spanish is available at https://www.tceq.texas.gov/ permitting/wastewater/plain-language-summaries-and-public-notices. ADDITIONAL NOTICE. TCEQ’s Executive Director has determined the application is administratively complete and will conduct a technical review of the application. After technical review of the application is complete, the Executive Director may prepare a draft permit and will issue a preliminary decision on the application. Notice of the Application and Preliminary Decision will be published and mailed to those who are on the county-wide mailing list and to those who are on the mailing list for this application. That notice will contain the deadline for submitting public comments.

PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting on this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing.

OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court.

TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; a list of all disputed issues of fact that you submit during the comment period and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify by name and physical address an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose.

Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission may only grant a request for a contested case hearing on issues the requestor submitted in their timely comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. If a hearing is granted, the subject of a hearing will be limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law relating to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment period.

MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/ or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below.

INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE. For details about the status of the application, visit the Commissioners’ Integrated Database at www.tceq.texas.gov/goto/cid. Search the database using the permit number for this application, which is provided at the top of this notice.

AGENCY CONTACTS AND INFORMATION.
