Commissioner Buckingham Applauds General Land Office’s Border Wall Victory in Court
AUSTIN—Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., released the following statement on the preliminary injunction granted today by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas in a federal lawsuit filed by the General Land Office (GLO) that prohibits the Biden Administration from using any congressionally allocated border wall funding for anything other than physical walls, barriers or fencing along the southern border:
“This ruling is a significant victory in Texas’ pursuit of border security and ensuring that the White House follows the Rule of Law. Thankfully, this ruling guarantees that the Biden Administration will not be able to use congressionally allocated funding on any initiatives other than constructing physical walls, fencing, or buoys along the southern border,” said Commissioner Buckingham. “As this border crisis continues to intensify, Texas is at the forefront of this battle to protect its citizens from this federally facilitated invasion. Under my watch, I promise the Texas General Land Office will stand strong in the fight to protect Texans and our country’s national security.”

After assuming office, President Biden announced that he would simply no longer follow the law, illegally halted all construction to build the wall on our southern border and diverted those congressionally appropriated border wall funds to other projects. The GLO filed a lawsuit in 2021 in order to hold the Biden Administration accountable to the Rule of Law. The GLO owns over 500,000 acres of land near the U.S.-Mexico border, with an estimated 31 linear miles along the Rio Grande.

The Fannin County Museum of History is delighted to have received a donation of a 600 set collection of stereoscope images which was produced by the Keystone View Company for use in classrooms.
The donation was from the family of Glenna Langford, who taught 4th grade in Bonham from 1966 to 1990.
This wonderful set of stereoscope images, in a beautiful wooden cabinet, must have been part of a classroom for many years before Mrs. Langford began teaching in Bonham. We believe it was sold to the school district in the early 1900s.
The 600 images are of many, many different subjects and geographic areas, including the United States and many other countries. Examples are the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris,

11. Approve Janitorial Services for the Windom Building, once a week, every other week, to be paid out of contingency – Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane advised the court that the cur-

14. Approve closing Fannin County Administrative Offices on April 8, 2024 for staff safety during the so-

A discussion ensued that included disagreement to have any county offices closed with Commissioner McQueen noting City offices would remain open and Commissioner Kopf commenting on the current number of paid holidays enjoyed by county employees. Judge Cunningham then likened the closing of some offices to a natural disaster event calling it a “predictable emergency that is going to occur.” After a comment from a citizen regarding the new work schedule policy, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve the closing of certain offices with Commissioner Self seconding the motion. The motion passed with Commissioners McQueen and Kopf voting nay.
DISCUSSION ITEMS:
15. Discussion regarding proposed sand and gravel plant in Ravenna – County Judge: Fannin County citizen
and resident of Lake Bonham, Barry Schwartz, spoke to state his belief that run-off from an existing sand & gravel plant located in Ravenna has over the past ten years caused extensive damage to the quality and appearance of the City of Bonham’s drinking water source Lake Bonham, turning what used to be clear beautiful water into a murky brown. He provided the court with aerial pictures depicting the plant’s refuse flowing into the lake that was taken several years ago before voicing concerns about further damage that, yet
another sand & gravel plant located in the Ravenna area could cause. He asked the court to do what they could to prevent further pollution by not sanctioning the opening of what probably would be, another source of pollution for Lake Bonham.

Judge Cunningham spoke about the responsibility of the Texas agency overseeing and managing the pollution of water bodies in Texas to make determinations regarding pollution and how he believes they have indicated the plant is not polluting the lake. He noted they would be the ones to lobby regarding matters of pollution before stating that his main area of concern is the damage to the county roads that the additional heavy equipment trucks (sometimes overloaded) traversing the county roads would pose not to mention the sound pollution they create.
Next to speak was Lake Bonham resident Robert Lee who in agreement with the first speaker about the pollution in Lake Bonham, noted his personal experience with the agency mentioned by the Judge, the TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality), and how in his opinion they are not doing an adequate job. He cited an incident several years ago when he was made aware the Wolf Creek Sand Plant lost its containment structure which caused massive amounts of ugly sand to go washing into the Wolf Creek Watershed and into Lake Bonham. He noted a violation was issued to the plant, but once repairs were made to their containment structure, the violation was withdrawn with no remediation efforts to repair the damage done to the lake required. He concluded by agreeing with Judge Cunningham about potential excessive damage being caused by the additional heavy sand truck traffic to the county roads and added the concern of safety involving collisions with the immense trucks, citing an accident he witnessed on Hwy 121 & Hwy 11only a few days ago involving a passenger vehicle and a gravel truck where the passenger vehicle was literally destroyed.
Judge Cunningham advised that legislators issue the authorization to the state agencies and a good place to start with concerns would best be directed to our State Representatives (Shelley Luther & Pat Fallon) to assist with any concerns about water, safety and roads.
Lake Bonham Resident and creator of the website, “restorelakebonham.com”, Steve Crump, was the last to speak.
Noting that he lives on Beavers Point where the damage done to the lake is very visible, he commented on research he has conducted over the years on this matter that can be viewed on his website. He encouraged everyone to visit his website to view pictures taken and sign the petition to restore Lake Bonham. He also commented on how the sand that has poured into the lake has negatively affected the fish life. He noted a pathway to clean up some of the damage does exist through EPA funding but that it would need to involve TCEQ and other governmental entities. He commented on how some time ago North Texas Municipal Water District had to pay approximately a million dollars to dredge the lake in the area where their filters are that were impacted by all the sand in the lake. He presumed much of the cost of that cleanup was most likely relayed to the taxpayers of Bonham via the cost for drinking water and stated all the governmental entities should work together for a solution.
Judge Cunningham noted that the court would not be
opposed to doing what they could do to obtain funding for the cleaning up of the lake but concluded with his preference for requests to be made to the Representatives stating the “squeaky wheel gets the grease.” He then reiterated his concern for trucks tearing up the county roads.
It was noted by Commissioner McQueen during the discussion that the proposed sand plant would be in a location in Ravenna that would not affect Lake Bonham.

Easter Morning Flowering of the Cross
Flowering of the cross is an ancient Easter tradition. The practice of putting lovely flowers on a rugged cross is a beautiful symbolization of the new life, joy, and hope that emerges from Jesus’ death. Please bring wildflowers, purchased flowers (fresh or artificial), or flowers from your garden to place on the cross. The cross will be in the garden at the sunrise service and then moved to the sanctuary before the 11:00 am service.

Why Come To Bible Class?
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
As long as I can remember, I have attended Bible classes. When I was a child, I went because of a Godly father and mother. As an adult my reasons for attending Bible classes are different. Had it not been for parents who strongly believed in the importance of attending Bible classes, I would not be attending—would probably not even be a Christian today.
Why attend Bible class? It is a ‘Delightful’ way of obeying the command of God. Paul instructed, “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
Why attend Bible class?
Come to enjoy being with brothers and sisters in Christ. Paul encourages us to be “kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another (Romans 12:10). John wrote to Christians, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of
Hello everyone!
The Bible tells us in Proverbs 3:9-10,
the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: so shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”
What Solomon is saying in this passage is that we must give the Lord our best in all that we do. Again I am reminded of the parable of the talents in Matthew chapter 25, where 2 of the 3 servants doubled the talents of money that they were given by their master, and the third servant hid his in the ground. When we use our talents, whether it be in our tithes and offerings, singing, preaching, teaching, or what have you, our Lord
God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God (1 John 4:7).
Why attend Bible class?
Come to do good, to abound in good works. James gives us the principle of “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin”
(James 4:17). Solomon said, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Why attend Bible class?
Come to protect and maintain a good and right influence. Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
Why attend Bible class?
Come to keep your scale of values properly adjusted. The Lord commanded “seek ye
and Master is pleased with us, and we will be greatly blessed for our efforts. We are called to be like the first two servants in the parable and not the third one. As I was trying to prepare for this week’s devotion, the Lord reminded me of this classic hymn that was written by Howard B. Grose. This fits perfectly with not just Proverbs 3:9-10, but also with the parable of the talents as well. This also references Lamentations 3:27, which tells us, “It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.”
“Give of your best to the Master; Give of the strength of your youth; Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor
first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus said “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled” (Matthew 5:6).
Why attend Bible class?
Come to be a good example.
Paul wrote, “be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). Again the scriptures instruct, “let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works” (Hebrews 10:24).
Why attend Bible class?
Come to learn, because we will be judged by the Bible. Jesus Christ stated that “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day” (John 12:48).
The Ivanhoe church of Christ invites you to come to Bible class on Sunday mornings at 9:30am, Sunday evenings at 6:00pm, and Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm.
Into the battle for truth.
Jesus has set the example, Dauntless was He, young and brave; Give Him your loyal devotion; Give Him the best that you have.
Give of your best to the Master; Give of the strength of your youth; Clad in salvation’s full armor, Join in the battle for truth.”
If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit us and be part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday or Wednesday!

Fourth Roundtable Presentation
By World
War II Roundtable, Audie Murphy Chapter
“Heavy Date Over Germany” will be the next quarterly program of the North Texas World War II History Roundtable. Jewellee Jordan Kuenstler, director of the Museum of the West Texas Frontier in Stamford, Texas, will present the life and times of B-17 tail gunner Ray Perry. He flew missions over various Nazi targets in 1944 and 1945. The program will be at 7 p.m. April 25 at the Audie Murphy /American Cotton Museum in Greenville. Members and public are invited. Greenville Electric Utility System (GEUS) is the Charter Gold Sponsor for this program. Perry, the father of former Texas Governor Rick Perry, joined the U.S. Army Air Force in 1944 after high school graduation, hoping to qualify for a pilot’s seat. However, his top notch shooting ability learned from years of growing up on a farm in Haskell County earned him a seat as a tail gunner in the 4-engine Flying Fortress called Heavy Date.
The assigned craft flew hundreds of missions per week out of bases located in England. If an individual crew completed a certain number of flights, usually 35, they earned extended furlough and on to another assignment. Perry completed his missions with the 95th Bomb Group at Horham, England a
month before the war in Europe was over.
In his rear position Perry got a wide angle view of missions and targets. At the same time he received much flak and German fighter attacks aimed at his position. The tail gun was no comfortable seat, even for a teenager; in fact, it required sitting with knees bent on a small bench, almost impossible to reach from the interior of the bomber. Seven to ten hour trips were to targets from Bochum to Leipzig to Hannover to Frankfurt and other unknown small towns where war machine parts were manufactured. All that time just to drop 15 minutes of munitions over factories. What a way to tour Germany! Unlike many, he came back alive and with no injuries. Kuenstler bases her book on letters and photos saved by Perry, who was a neighbor to her family. The story weaves around the bomb tag information Perry kept. Adding in war source material, the book was produced by State House Press and distributed by Texas A&M Press. It is available in print or digital form. This is the fourth program sponsored by the Roundtable. Previously the studies have been on Hitler’s health problems, the generals hired by George Marshall, and the land attack through Italy by the 36th division. Now the view of WWII is from the air.

Plan ahead for road work on FM 68 in Fannin County
March 22, 2024
PARIS – Texas Department of Transportation officials today announced that a project to improve the roadway surface of FM 68 in Fannin County is slated to begin April 17.
The contractor, DL Lennon Inc., was granted 247 working days, weather permitting, to complete this project valued at more than $6.2 million. The target completion date for this project is July 2025, officials said.
This project extends along FM 68 between State Highway 78 and FM 271.
The contractor will widen and rehabilitate the pavement surface with new flexible base and apply a two-course surface treatment. Workers
will also install new drainage structures and re-stripe the roadway with new pavement markings, officials said.
Temporary, occasional lane closures while this project is underway, but flaggers will be on site and pilot cars will direct traffic through the work zone, officials said.
Motorists who travel frequently in these areas are asked to pay special attention to all barricades, traffic controls and signs, and to reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

.... With the atomic bomb, it was learned that matter could be destroyed with a great amount of energy released. It was the opposite with God. His energy created all things. "So, the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation." (Genesis 2:1-3 NLT)

Week of March 20, 2024
Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 60 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Catfish bite continues to be king on cut shad. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 60 degrees; 0.16 feet below pool. Lake Fork bass bite has slowed down a bit with dropping water temperatures. Lots of 58-62 degree water and the lake if turbid after the recent rain. Spinnerbaits and chatterbaits around grass in 4-5 feet of water has been the best. Texas rigs are fair around deeper edges of grass and big lay downs in 4-6 feet. Bass are moving up and down with the weather changes, I’m offering shallow and subsurface until I find a working pattern. The bite changes as the water temp rises or falls. Frog pattern top waters are excellent in the grass and brush. Small craw patterns will work well on bedding bass.
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 55 degrees; 2.06 feet above pool. Crappies are showing up in the shallows in 2-4 feet of water. The bite is not on fire, but some limits are being taken in the shallows with jigs and minnows. Prespawn fish roaming some hanging on brush 5-15 feet. White bass spawn is in full swing, with a few hybrids thrown in the mix. Sandies are spawning in the creeks on the North end. Ray Roberts FAIR. Water slightly stained; 55 degrees; 0.43 feet below pool. Overall, fishing patterns are holding steady. Catching the white bass a little shallower than before in 3540 feet of water using slabs. A few catfish are mixed in. The majority of the catfish are shallow 2-7 feet on points. Blue catfish tend to relate to the points leading into the creeks. Channel catfish are up the creeks.
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 0.48 feet above pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish well despite the brief cooldown in water temperature this week. Main lake is sitting at 60 degrees right now. Heavy overcast skies and cooler temperatures had the hybrids and white bass feeding all day. Swimbaits have been the ticket for the bigger fish and slabs for the white bass. 20-40 feet is best. The eating sized blue and channel catfish bite is wide open. Blues are being caught in 2-4 feet using fresh cut shad.
Texoma GOOD. Water normal stain; 57 degrees; 1.35 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is good using live shad on main lake ledges and flats in 30-40 feet of water. The bite has improved drastically around 10:30-11:00 A.M. each day, so stick it out if you are not seeing active fish early. Backs of coves and around the mouths of the rivers are good with swimbaits in 8-15 feet of water where the water is dirty and warmer. Catfish are slow, anchor in shallow water near the rivers where the inflow is using whole gizzard shad or cut buffalo for big fish. Smaller fish showing up on the flats in 20-30 feet of water. Crappie are fair in the creeks in 1-5 feet of water using jigs and minnows on brush sticking up or lay downs from the bank. Mo glo and black/chartreuse on a slip cork in shallow creeks. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are fair on swimbaits along the bluffs and on sandy points with stumps in 5-8 feet of water. Topwater bite will be on soon!
Game Warden Field Notes
A Little Mud on the Tires A Polk County Game Warden received a call from dispatch regarding individuals loading up a deer. A Polk County deputy was in the area and assisted the warden in patrolling the area based on the original call. An ATV drove by on a public roadway and the deputy initiated a traffic stop. The driver of the ATV fled, and a pursuit ensued. The ATV turned and went off-road on muddy terrain, so the warden followed the pursuit in four-wheel drive until the path ended and then gave pursuit on foot. The warden guided the deputy to where he expected the ATV to return. The deputy apprehended the subject and the ATV which was discovered to be stolen.
Sticky Situation A McLennan County Game Warden was responding to a trespassing call from a landowner when the warden came upon the suspect stuck in the mud. The warden interviewed the suspect and discovered that they had also burglarized a vehicle while trespassing. The landowner identified the stolen property and it was returned. The suspect was arrested for burglary of a vehicle and criminal trespass.
Helping Hand A Washington County Warden received a call of a suspicious boat discovered by a realtor and landowner. A TX number was provided to Austin Dispatch where it was flagged as stolen. The warden made it to the scene and verified the HIN of the boat and VIN of the trailer. Both were confirmed stolen out of Harris County. Investigators from the Marine Theft Investigation Unit were contacted, the original owners were contacted, and the property is being returned. The investigation is ongoing.

Hunting Accidents at a New Record Low in Texas
AUSTIN — Texas recorded a new all-time low number of hunting-related accidents across the state, according to the 2023 Texas Hunting Accident Report. A new record low of 10 nonfatal hunting-related accidents and one fatality were reported in 2023. Texas’ highest record to date occurred in 1972 when the state saw 30 fatal hunting-related accidents. The staggering numbers recorded every year showed the need for more firearm safety, which led to the creation of the Hunter Education program.
Since Hunter Education became a requirement for all hunters in 1988, the hunting accident rate has seen a steady decrease. Only a single fatality has been reported for each of the last four years.
“The continued decline in hunting-related accidents and fatalities is in large part due to the efforts of the TPWD Hunter Education Program and the many Hunter Education instructors across the

state, many whom are volunteers,” said Steve Hall, TPWD Hunter Education coordinator. “Beyond safety, we teach hunters how to be legal, ethical, take a good shot and take care of game from field to fork.”
More than 1.5 million students have been certified with Hunter Education since 1972. Hunter Education is required for every hunter in Texas (including out-of-state hunters) born on or after Sept. 2, 1971. The minimum age for certification is 9 years of age and certification is good for life. There are two course options for anyone who needs to take Hunter Education — inperson or virtual. The basic classroom course includes six hours of instruction plus skill exercises, a review and then a final exam. These types of courses are most often held in schools or an indoor venue. The “Internet + Field Course,” has two parts: a free online course that should be completed first, and then the field portion that typically takes a minimum of four hours to complete. The field course contains a presentation on ethical and responsible hunting, participation in a hunting skills trail, a live-fire exercise, a review of regulations and a final exam.
There is also an online-only course that is restricted to anyone 17 years of age or older. Online coursework varies from two to four hours depending on existing knowledge, age, reading level and other factors.
Learn more about Hunter Education, how to sign up for a course and find resources for students on the TPWD website.

Monitor for Carbon Monoxide
• Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be harmful when inhaled in large amounts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that CO can cause dizziness, confusion, unconsciousness, and death.
• The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that consumers install carbon monoxide detectors and advise that a carbon monoxide alarm can provide added protection. Carbon monoxide detectors are not, however, a substitute for proper use and upkeep of appliances that can produce CO.
• The U.S. Fire Administration recommends installation and maintenance of CO alarms in a central location, outside each sleeping area and on ev-

Even with warmer weather on the way, there are still several steps you can take to control energy costs, where safe to do so. Using energy wisely and making a few household changes can make a big difference in how much you spend on natural gas and other energy bills. Plus, you will lower your home's carbon emissions when you use less energy.
• Reduce your shower and bath time, which can account
for 40 percent of your hot water use.
• Operate your clothes washer, dryer, and dishwasher only when fully loaded.
• Change or clean your heating and air conditioning unit filters regularly and according to the manufacturer's instructions. Your equipment will use less energy if it ‘breathes’ more easily.
• If you have a pool, use the pool heater sparingly.
• Atmos Energy offers rebates for high-efficiency natural gas appliances, energy-saving devices, and weatherization upgrades for customers in parts of
Texas. Visit atmosenergy.com/ rebates for details.
For customers who want a more predictable bill, payment solutions such as Budget Billing and Installment Plans can help manage your bill and household budget:
• Budget Billing is a free program that makes your natural gas bill more predictable every month because your costs are spread more evenly throughout the year, so you are not surprised by higher winter bills.
• Installment plans are available that spread out payments of your balance over time –with no charges or fees to do

JANA GAIL (LACKEY) HOLLAND
Jana Gail (Lackey) Holland. age 43, of Bonham TX, was born on November 11, 1979, in Dallas, TX to Joseph Earl Lackey Sr and Fern Lee (Butler) Lackey. She passed away unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, March 03, 2024, in Bonham, TX.
Jana was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, and friend. Her children were her pride and joy. After covid hit, she took on the task of homeschooling the kids. She would research and organize field trips for the kids and often included other family members as well. She loved to spend time with family, especially if she could add a teachable moment in with all the fun and laughter. Jana loved taking pictures but rarely liked being the focus of the camera. She was very creative making all kinds of crafts. She could decorate cakes, make diaper & towel cakes, jewelry, plastic canvas, and would gladly tackle any other kind of project. She was a hard worker, always ready to lend a hand and pitch in, no matter how hard or dirty the task was. She was an animal lover of all animals, but especially dogs and cats.
Jana is survived by her husband Micheal (Scooter), son Trent and daughter, Hollie Holland of Bonham; sisters Linda (Mike) Lipovsky of Bonham, TX, and Karen (Ric) Money of Gulfport, MS, Bonus Mom Joan Eaton Lackey McCloud and husband Sherwood of Merit, TX; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Now that the weather is warm and dry It’s a good time to work on mud control. If your soil is black gumbo, you likely fight it every year when the spring rains come. Here are a few suggestions from clients and Facebook that will help with the deep clay/mud that is often difficult to work in.
1 Put a load of sand or rock in the area. If gumbo is really deep this may be a summer project.
2 Put secrete sacks in the area, wet the top of the sacks, cover with sand
3 Install Light Hoof mud panels 6x12 for $219. Information is on the internet.
Using gumbo as a base for your stalls can work well if done correctly. You will need to flatten and pack the base then let it dry and harden. Place down well-fitting stall mats (locking ones are best), use bedding pellets in urine spots, and cover the stall with shavings.
What is ICSI?
ICSI, Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a reproductive technique used in humans (test tube baby), horses and cattle with fertility problems. In horses, the eggs (oocytes) are retrieved from the follicles on the mare’s ovaries and put in a maturation solution for 30 hours. Then one sperm is injected into the egg, fertilization takes place, and hopefully an embryo will develop.
The embryo is either put into a recipient mare (surrogate mother), shipped to an embryo transfer facility to be put in a recipient mare or frozen for future use. Often the ICSI is done in the fall where the embryos are frozen and put in the recipient mare in the spring breeding season for a foal to be born the next spring.
For horse ICSI, the eggs are obtained with an ultrasound guided needle aspiration through the mare’s vagina from the ovary. Each follicle contains an egg. The mare does not have to be in heat (estrus). Because only one sperm is needed, only a small amount of semen (1 straw) is required. The fertilized egg is put in a special culture media and into the incubator where hopefully it will grow into an embryo in 10 days. The odds are not good in that only 1-2 out of 10 become embryos. The ICSI procedure is used for infertile stallions, mares with fertility problems, or mares that are competing. It is expensive, about $10,000 (not including the Stud fee).
ET Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer is done during the spring breeding season. The mare is bred to the stallion usually through AI Artificial Insemination. It is of utmost importance to know the day of ovulation for the mare.
Fertilization takes place up by the ovary. The egg is released from the follicle on the
ovary and 1 lucky sperm that has successfully swam from the uterus up to the ovary penetrates the egg. 8 days later the fertilized egg comes down to the uterus as an embryo. That is when the embryo transfer is done. The embryo is flushed out of the uterus of the donor mare by filling the uterus with ET solution and draining it out through a filter device. The filter is then examined under a microscope looking for an embryo the size of the head of a pin. The embryo and some solution is sucked up into a syringe and then put into the uterus of the recipient mare. The recipient mare is chosen by the day that she ovulates which is usually the same day of ovulation as the donor mare. If you provide your own mare as the recipient mare, you must have the donor and recipient synchronized to ovulate on the same day for the ET which is a little difficult to do. Cost is $6000 for ET embryo transfer and the recipient mare.
Founder Alert Spring is 3 weeks early and the grass is green so it is time to remove those fat horses from the pasture and limit their grazing time especially those that have foundered before. They can easily do it again.

Texas Crop and Weather Report
March 19, 2024
Egg prices are on the rise as Easter approaches, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert, but they are lower than what consumers may have paid at the grocery store earlier in the year.
Full egg cartons sitting in a grocery store refrigerator.
Consumers — and the Easter bunny — may have noticed the price of eggs increasing recently but that has mostly to do with demand, said David Anderson, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension economist, BryanCollege Station. Anderson said he expects that trend to continue leading up to the Easter holiday.
“We’re actually producing more eggs than we did a year ago, but eggs have a seasonal pattern to them,” he said,
“And with Easter being earlier than usual this year, we’re also seeing prices rise earlier than we typically would.”
Producers saw wholesale prices for cartons of shell eggs strengthening through this past week with the increasing demand.
Holidays tend to drive demand up as consumers purchase more eggs than usual for eating and baking. The Easter holiday demand also includes the purchase of eggs to dye and hide.
CENTRAL
A map of the state of Texas divided into the 12 AgriLife Extension districts. Cooler temperatures were accompanied by substantial rainfall. Winter pastures improved significantly, and
the better weather prompted warm-season grasses to break dormancy. Producers were spraying fields, applying fertilizer and managing brush to remove prickly pear and restore native pastures. The cooler temperatures slowed down the development of leaf rust, while wheat conditions showed steady improvement. Moisture posed a risk of stripe rust and other diseases. Hessian flies seemed smaller in number compared to recent years. Corn planting operations neared completion but were delayed by recent rains. Grain sorghum planting also faced delays. Corn showed a promising start with adequate soil moisture and favorable weather conditions. Cattle remained in good body condition, and the
local market for calves was favorable. The sheep and goat market remained strong. Stock tank levels remained full. Pastures greened up, reducing the need for supplemental feeding, and stocker cattle gained well on winter grazing. Producers donated significant amounts of hay to support those in the Panhandle affected by wildfires.
EAST
Recent rain and warmer temperatures continued to aid the growth and greenup of warm-season forages. Producers in some areas could slow or completely stop feeding hay, which helped relieve some of the stress of thin hay supplies. Pasture and rangeland conditions were fair
to good. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate. Heavy rain ensured ponds and creeks were full. Cattle market prices were strong and higher in some markets. Livestock were in fair to good condition with some supplementation taking place. Fertilizer prices increased.
NORTH
Rainstorms brought 1-2 inches of rain over the northeast portion of the district. Topsoil was adequate, and crop conditions for cool-season crops continued to be favorable for growth and development. Noctuid moth populations were increasing. Livestock were in fair to good condition overall. Most counties saw a decline in hay consumption
over the last week due to the growth of green grass in the pastures. No diseases were reported.
ROLLING PLAINS
District-wide rain fell with amounts ranging from 0.5 inch to 2 inches. Farmers who had wheat top-dressed with fertilizer before the rains were especially grateful for the timing of the moisture. Wheat across the district looked very satisfactory, as did stocker calves, which showed excellent body condition thanks to above-average grazing. Pasture grasses and stock tanks were also in good condition. Producers in a few counties began tilling cotton fields.

2. The primary spillway controls water overflow from the lake. It will include a zig-zag section of concrete at the top of the dam (called a weir) that helps control the water as it’s released from the lake downstream.
3. In addition to its primary spillway, #LakeRalphHall’s dam includes an emergency spillway designed to handle larger amounts of runoff from particularly heavy rainstorms. It's an important part of the dam’s safety features, ensuring that excess water is properly directed into the North Sulphur River.
A Fishing Jetty for the Future
The #LakeRalphHall public fishing jetty is taking shape. Lake Ralph Hall was one of nine projects nationwide that Bass Pro Shops selected to receive funding for fishing- related enhancements, including the jetty. The jetty is around 500 ft long (extending into the deeper part of the lake) with an 8-ft-wide concrete walkway, allowing folks to fish or to simply enjoy nature. The new jetty is located just off Highway 34 on the north side of the lake adjacent to SH 34. Species of fish that will be stocked include Florida Bass, black and white crappie, channel and blue catfish, plus sunfish, bluegill, threadfin and gizzard shad. Texas Parks and Wildlife is also assembling riprap piles, gravel spawning beds and over 200 reef balls to form into protective cover for fish and ideal spots for fishing.
