The Fullness of the Fall

By Bro. Bill Beasley

Genesis 3:1-9 The Book of Genesis is the first book in the Bible. Since it is, one might expect it to give us an account of how the world came into being. And so it does, for

Commissioners Continued from page 1

Commissioner Magness would like to give a shout out to the Texas Highway Patrol between Honey Grove and Bonham there were 4 highway patrol actively working. Commissioner Lackey would like to say a few things about

in the first two chapters we have the creation story, including the making of Adam and Eve and the placing of them in the Garden of Eden. They were given freedom of choice and in turn warnings that they were not to eat of the Tree of Life. It was here that they met the Tempter for the first time. Adam and Eve were deceived by Satan and his lies and gave in to the temptation and in doing so sinned. Their sin brought their fall and they were removed from the Garden of Eden. There were three lies Satan told Adam and

Eve about eating the forbidden fruit in his plan to deceive man. • Satan’s first lie: You will not surely die. • Satan’s second lie: You will be like God if you eat the fruit. •Satan’s third lie: God is afraid of you. Not only did the sin of Adam and Eve render all mankind lost in sin and in need of redemption but from that moment, left all of us to live in a fallen world. The world is in agony right now. The fullness of the fall is being experienced in the evils of our day, every day.

the courthouse work, they are cutting out bad spots in the rock, in the next month or so the concrete band on the top will be removed. Stone to replace the bad areas is not an exact match in color. He said you will notice scratches around the doors, names carved in the building will all stay there. Judge Moore stated the NTMWD plant in Leonard is about 33% complete. Judge Moore

met with Robert Dean at the DPS office, they would like to install a Kiosk to better serve customers and move things along faster. DPS also are going to an appointment only status. That would mean No Walk ins. Greenville DPS office should be open soon. 16. Commissioner Whitlock and Commissioner Lackey motioned to adjourn 11:15.

In about 6 weeks, we will be observing Easter Sunday. Strangely enough, the Easter story has its beginning in the Book of Genesis. By picture and by promise, God’s provision for our redemption gave hope to our forgiveness. Adam and Eve tried to hide from God because of the shame of their nakedness. It was a loving God that called out, “Adam where are you?” It was a forgiving God who provided animals whose skins were used to cover their bodies. It was the shedding of the blood of these animals that foreshadowed the coming death of God’s son. In Genesis 3:15 God said that the seed of a woman would

It’s time for something sweet! It’s been a few weeks, so I’m ready for something sweet, but not chocolate. I ate too much chocolate during Christmas. Let’s see if this simple vanilla cake recipe suits your fancy. It does mine! CHESS CAKE 1 box yellow cake mix 1 stick melted margarine 1 egg, well beaten 8 oz. cream cheese 3 eggs, beaten 1 box confectioners’ sugar Preheat oven to 375°. Mix cake mix, margarine and egg well and press into a 9 x 13 inch loaf pan. Beat cream cheese, eggs and confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Pour over cake batter. Bake for 10 minutes. Turn oven down to 325° and bake 30 minutes more. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

The purpose of Celebrate Recovery is to fellowship and celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the Eight Recovery Principles found in the Beatitudes and Christ-Centered Twelve Steps. These steps guide the recovery of those wanting to leave behind hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Examples include dependency on alcohol or drugs, low self-esteem, depression, anger, abuse, broken relationships, pornography and any other life experiences that affect our peace and joy with God. As we progress through the program we discover our personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power, Jesus Christ.

5/21/19 Rhonda Russell Koeppen supports Sheriff Johnson

I SUPPORT SHERIFF MARK JOHNSON My name is Rhonda Russell Koeppen. I was born and raised in Fannin County and lived here most of my life. I started the “Justice for Jennifer Harris” Facebook page as a way to bring light to her unsolved murder. I lost a child myself and my heart ached for what her family had been going through for many years. I managed the page anonymously and it wasn’t until much later that I revealed my identity. I met Mark Johnson in 2015 during a rally for Jennifer Harris shortly after he started his campaign for Sheriff. I also had the privilege of meeting Jennifer’s father, Jerry Harris. When I first met Mark Johnson, I was only interested in knowing if he would allow an outside source to come in and look at Jennifer’s case. After talking to him, I knew he was the right person for the job. Over the years, my husband and I have gotten to know Sheriff Mark Johnson and his wife, Kathy. After seeing everything he has been able to accomplish in his first 3 years as the Fannin County Sheriff and how involved he is in our community, I have to say I admire him even more now. Never have I seen a Sheriff so involved in his job and the county as a whole. You will see Sheriff Mark Johnson with his wife at his side at events all across Fannin County and not just during an election time. I personally believe Sheriff Mark Johnson is a man of integrity and honesty. His experience is what we need in a Sheriff. His accomplishments in the last 3 years alone are enough for me to vote for him. Please join my husband and me in supporting the Re-Election of Sheriff Mark Johnson on March 3, 2020. By Glenn Taylor Fort Inglish Village, Bonham’s open air pioneer village, will be open for visitors beginning March 5, after its winter’s closing. This historical park is on Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham between the Sam Rayburn Museum and Library and the Trades Day venue. Bailey Inglish was the founder of what became Bonham. He and his family came to the area in 1837. Bailey Inglish had received a land grant of 1,200 acres and he claimed acreage of both sides of Bois d’Arc and Powder Creeks including all of the eastern half of present day Bonham. The original Fort Inglish was built in 1837 for protection from Indians and was on the property now occupied by the VA Hospital. The fort served as the nucleus for the development of the village that was later to become the County seat of Fannin County.

During the Texas Centennial Celebration of 1936 a replica of the fort was built on the corner of 9th Street and Lynn. This replica was dismantled and the new replica was built at the current location in 1976 for the BiCentennial Celebration. The Fort Inglish open air museum contains not only the replica of the fort, but a number of other buildings. These include: The Blacksmith Shop; The Church/ School; The Bailey Inglish Family Cabin; The General Store [now the Gift Shop] and the Prairie Cabin. Each location is full of interesting historic artifacts. The buildings are open to the public Thursday – Saturday from 11 am – 3 pm, although you can tour the outside of the buildings and enjoy the picnic tables any time. We welcome you to visit and bring your children and grandchildren to enjoy and learn about pioneers times in Fannin County.

Museum Object of the Week

02-07-17There are memories of music

By Fannin County Museum of History The Object of the Week at the Fannin County Museum of History is the original sign from Sadie’s Place, which has been described as a “legendary juke joint in Bonham famous for fried chicken.” It was located in the East End of Bonham at 6th

& Pine. Sadie’s Place was operated by Sadie Gilbreath in the 1960’s and 1970’s. According to comments on the Fannin County Historical Group Facebook Page, Sadie would post the menu of the day on the porch and potential customers could drive by to see what she was serving up that day.

that could be heard blocks away. Billy Fuller says that sometimes there was live music, with guitar players playing for tips, but usually it was just the jukebox. Unsubstantiated rumors say that bootleggers hung around Sadie’s and that whiskey could be bought. However, Mike Bankston, Bonham Chief of Police, said recently that there was rarely any trouble at Sadie’s and that he thought the bootleggers were at other places. Casie Partidge said of Sadie’s: It was a popular Juke joint back in the day. You could get a chicken fried steak, Fried chicken , Greasy Hamburger , Groceries & Cold soda pop, peanut rounder, moon pie. It was a favorite hangout among Folks around town. Visit the Fannin County Museum of History to see the sign and our Black History Display. The Museum is open TuesdaySaturday, noon – 4pm and is located just a few blocks south of the Courthouse Square.

CAMP DRAGONFLY – Children’s Camp March 6-8, 2020

Sherman, Texas, February 6, 2020 – Registration for Camp Dragonfly is now open. Camp Dragonfly is a weekend retreat, led by professional clinicians and trained staff, for children ages 8-12 who have suffered the loss of a loved one. All activities at Camp Dragonfly are designed to help children heal and live successfully after loss. During the weekend, campers have the opportunity to participate in art activities, games, nature hikes, discussions, and a campfire with s’mores! “Campers learn ways to pro-

cess feelings and treasure memories. Camp is not about forgetting, it is about healing. We use exercises to help the children learn to process grief and then fun activities to practice the coping skills they are learning,” said Nancy Jackson, Community Development Director and Camp Director. “Children grieve differently than adults. Some children have behavioral problems, some struggle with schoolwork, some become argumentative or fearful, some hesitate to be away from a parent, and many don’t like to be alone.”

Children dealing with grief often feel isolated and feel that no one understands. “My child very much enjoyed camp, she has always felt different from other children and camp seemed to make her feel like she belonged,” said a parent whose daughter attended a previous session. “The grief counselor I talked to was awesome! She was very honest and straightforward with me. She even asked how I was handling everything.” The spring session of Camp Dragonfly is scheduled for March 6-8, 2020 at All Saints

CALL FOR ART: at the Creative Arts Center

Former FCSO Investigator 4/7/15 supports Sheriff Johnson My name is Officer Ralph Belen, formerly Investigator Belen of the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. As one of Sheriff Johnson’s former employees, I would like to come forward in support of the Sheriff and share my experience serving under Sheriff Johnson. I began my service to the citizens of Fannin County under the previous administration after having proudly served my country and earning my veteran status. I entered into law enforcement because I felt that I had so much more to contribute through service to the community. I do have to admit I was slightly apprehensive when Sheriff Johnson took office. Many things can change under a new Sheriff. Each Sheriff has a new vision and a plan on how to make that vision a reality. I was quickly relieved to find that I had nothing to be concerned about. Sheriff Johnson offered me opportunities that would not have been possible with any other agency. He took chances on a young rookie patrol deputy that I will be forever grateful for. He recognized and praised my motivation and enthusiastic dedication to service. I wanted to educate myself to become a more valuable resource to the Fannin County families I worked for every day. Sheriff Johnson offered me the opportunity to become Fannin County’s first ever Crimes against Children and Sexual Assault Investigator. I understood that to accept this position it meant that my salary would come from a grant provided by the Texoma Council of Governments. I was also informed it would be less money than what I was currently making and that if the grant was not renewed the position would no longer exist. The Sheriff reassured me that if the grant was not renewed, he would find a position for me because he “wouldn’t lose a good deputy.” I never hesitated and I grabbed the chance with both hands, determined to let the Sheriff know he’d made a good decision. He had faith in me to do my best and he had earned my trust, so I had faith that he would support me. I set forth to learn all that I could and to effectively perform my duties to the standard of excellence that Fannin County deserves and Sheriff Johnson expects. I strived to forge strong working relationships with all of the surrounding law enforcement agencies, the Children’s Advocacy Center, the Fannin County Children’s Center and the Crisis Center of Grayson County as well as Child Protective Services. Sheriff Johnson did everything possible to facilitate those working relationships. He offered agreements to any agency who wanted to participate in sharing the workload of investigation by allowing those agencies to bring cases for me to investigate. I left the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office to work for another law enforcement agency in the metroplex and my starting salary was $40,000.00 per year more than I was making in Fannin County. Although I have moved forward to advance my career, I feel that the families of Fannin County that I was able to help find peace during their time of most dire need should know that I support Sheriff Mark Johnson. I am very thankful for the opportunity he has given me to serve under him and to be of service to this county. I’ve had many rewarding experiences and have experienced an invaluable amount of personal and professional growth during my time spent in service to Fannin County. I still come by to visit with my Fannin County Family. My serivce has been an honor and will always be a cherished memory. I support the Re-Election of Sheriff Mark Johnson and I hope that you will as well. Ralph Belen Political ad paid for by Re-Elect Mark Johnson campaign, Katherine Johnson, Treasurer

Simultaneous Success: Strickland’s 200th win as Trenton’s manager marks personal, s’ball program achievement

Coach Jeremy Strickland (back row, center) garnered his 200th win as Trenton’s softball manager on Feb. 21. Courtesy photo

By Rich Hilliard TRENTON -- A recent achievement didn’t just mark a milestone in the managerial career of Trenton’s Jeremy Strickland. It also equated something significant for a once struggling softball program. Trenton on Feb. 21 garnered its 200th softball win since Strickland became manager. “I’ve been blessed with good groups of kids,” said Strickland. “I came in here nine years ago having never coached or been

around softball,” he said. “[Then principal] Rick Foreman and [former athletic director] Keith Kirkland took a chance on me.” The victory came at the start of a softball season which, in a few months, will include for Trenton an eighth consecutive and overall postseason. Previously, Trenton under Strickland has: made sevenstraight postseason trips which reached at least the regional quarterfinals, advanced to the regional semifinals in 2013 and 2014 and made regional finals trips in 2015 and 2016.

State-champion D’Hanis, which last spring stopped the Hornets a game shy of playing for the title, topped the 1A rankings which also included: No. 2 Wells, No. 3 New Home, No. 5 Round Top Carmine, No. 6, Borden County, No. 7 Abbott, No. 8 LaPoynor, No. 9. Avalon and No. 10 Santo. State semifinalist Van Alstyne, which competes in District 10-3A with Bonham and Leonard, joined Breckenridge, Grandview, Clifton and Atlanta in garnering votes in 3A to finish just outside the Top 10. The 3A Top 10 was as follows: No. 1. Wall, No. 2. Bishop, No. 3. Gunter, No. 4. Kirbyville, No. 5. Brock, No. 6. Bushland, No. 7. Troy, No. 8. Pottsboro, No. 9. Hallettsville, No. 10. Malakoff. It took other state powerhouse programs to stop those Trenton postseason runs -- in 2017, that equated district-rival Bells en route to its first of two-consecutive Class 2A titles. Those postseason advances started five of seven times via shared or outright district titles. Contrast that with what Strickland inherited when he took over the Trenton softball program: 15 previous seasons and only 30 wins. “Rick Foreman was worried about the status of the program,” said Strickland.

SPORTS Manager Jeremy Strickland (left) talks to Trenton’s Misty Spindle (20), Jessica Withrow (24) and Maddison Lavoie (3) last spring during District 13-2A softball. Photo by Rich Hilliard However, when he began, Strickland also recalled a mention by Foreman of a “good group coming up” -- that, a few years later, quickly turned Trenton into a softball state title contender. “We had groups that were hungry to win, wanted to be coached and were willing to do whatever they were asked,” said Strickland. A few members of those teams have extended their softball careers beyond high school. Jordan Withrow, a 2016 gradu-

ate -- and an indispensable part, in the circle and at the plate, of the first four postseason teams -- will, in her fourth season this spring semester at Tarleton State, become the university’s all-time winningest softball pitcher. She has been joined this season on the TSU softball team by sister Jessica Withrow, a 2019 graduate. Others for whom softball has continued include 2015 graduate Jessica Picou (Crowder College/ Mary Hardin-Baylor) and 2013 graduate Pearl Walls (Grayson

Leonard junior Brenley Sadler, a 2019 regional qualifier, finished one spot out of advancing again and will be a regional alternate in the 165 division. Meanwhile, Bonham qualified six girls: freshman Xitlali Padilla, 105 division; senior Sara Henry, 123 division; senior Cagen Burkard, 198 division; sophomore Jordan Passanisi, 198 division; freshman

Heaven Warner, 220 division; and junior Dania Arguello, 259 division. It equates a return trip to regional competition for Vaughn, Stricklin, Wallace, Garza, Dykes, Harris, Butler, Doyle, Crossland, and Chapman of Leonard. Burkard and Arguello of Bonham also return, while Passanisi will make her first trip after being a regional alternate last year. The top two girls per weight division -- or top two per classification (1A- 3A) in each division -- at each regional meet will advance to the state lift at the Extraco Center in Waco on March 20.

RE-ELECT SHERIFF MARK JOHNSON TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2020 To the citizens of Fannin County, Election Day is upon us and I respectfully ask for your vote as Fannin County Sheriff. I have proudly served you for the last 3 years and will continue to do my very best to move Fannin County forward to meet the changing law enforcement needs of this county. My door is always open and anyone is always welcome to ask me any questions or discuss any concerns that you might have. There are issues that can’t be discussed publicly but that does not mean I am not transparent or honest. I have decisions to make that aren’t always popular and don’t always make people happy but I still follow the law and do what I feel is best for the citizens that I serve. Just because you read it on social media doesn’t make it true and just because I don’t discuss it on social media doesn’t mean I have anything to hide. I work with a limited budget and try every day to provide Fannin County with the best law enforcement agency that I can provide with what I am given. The budget for 2020 that was set for the Sheriff’s Office is $2,339,696.00 and of that 80% is allocated to salaries and benefits. I have researched and found other ways to obtain equipment, employees and technology that is desperately needed.

Look for Me - 2nd Name on the Ballot Here are just a few highlights of the accomplishments made in the last 3 years…. • I negotiated a contract with North Texas Municipal Water District for the law enforcement needs pertaining to Bois d’Arc Lake that was over $2.5 million that brought technology, Deputies, training and equipment to the budget that was at no cost to the tax payers. • Training has been a priority. In the last 3 years the Sheriff’s Office employees have received 8,408 hours in training. The budget I am given does not provide funding for training. Despite what you hear, the majority of that training is quality classroom training and not sitting behind a computer. • I initiated the process to have a one mile stretch of Highway 11 renamed in the memory of fallen deputy, Rahamy Mitchell as well as starting a scholarship fund to honor his memory. This scholarship provides full tuition for a Fannin County resident to attend the police academy. • Shortly after taking office all the illegal game rooms in Fannin County were taken out of operation. • I worked with 48 Hours to bring national attention to the Jennifer Harris murder case. I am proud to receive an endorsement from Jerry Harris and Barry and Alyssa Wernick who feel that I did everything I promised I would do for Jennifer’s case and will continue to do everything I can to ensure her killer is brought to justice. • The drug problem in Fannin County is a problem but it is something we are working on daily. In the last year alone, we have removed marijuana, THC oil, LSD, meth, cocaine, heroin and various prescription pills from the streets of Fannin County with a street value of over $1.6 million. We have seized 15 vehicles and 2 residences and $80,000 in drug money. • Much needed security upgrades have been added to the Fannin County Detention Center at no cost to the tax payers and that equipment includes a full body scanner, portable scanner for mattresses and a cell phone detector. • I am a conservative Republican who supports our Constitution. I went before our Commissioners Court and initiated the idea to make Fannin County a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary County and that resolution was passed with a 100% vote. I have devoted my life to law enforcement. I am a Master Peace Officer with over 26 years experience as a Police Officer with 18 years of that time being spent as a Chief of Police right here in Fannin County for the cities of Savoy and Honey Grove. I have 10 years experience as a Jailer, Jail Administrator and Dispatcher. I have 2,184 TCOLE documented training hours. Most of all, I have been serving as your Sheriff for the last 3 years and brought much needed change to the Sheriff’s Office. I hope you will stand with me and allow me to serve you, the citizens of Fannin County for another 4 year term. I will remain committed, listen to your concerns and pray daily for guidance. I respectfully ask for your vote on March 3, 2020 in the Republican Primary. Mark Johnson Fannin County Sheriff Political Ad Paid for by Mark Johnson
