Sharing the Guilt
By Bro. Bill Beasley “The Week That Was” speaks to our minds and hearts concerning events that are remembered in the Easter Season. We are quick to place the guilt in the hands of the soldiers who wielded the swords and inflicted the physical suffering. We are almost as ready to
blame the disciples for their negligence. But before we finish our condemnation we must remember that all of us share the guilt. Your sins and mine and the sin of all mankind sent Jesus to the cross. I do want to single out the sin of Peter – not that it is more violent – but in the face of Jesus personal warning he still denies the word. Jesus had been talking to His disciples about His approaching death. Peter in his self-confidence says in substance that he will never allow that to happen. The denial is spelled out in how the
act will take place. And what will occur with the rooster crowing. Even as Peter was warned a little experience in my life was a warning as well. It was in the later 1970’s that The First Baptist Church, Bonham where I was pastor made possible for me to visit the Holy Land all expenses paid. While I was there I was asked to bring the message to all the tourists present. We met in the “Upper Room” where Jesus had prayer with His disciples often. I remember plainly that as I was delivering the message I looked out the

I saw a rooster walking around. I promised in my heart to be faithful in my relationship with Jesus. I have never forgotten that little scene. I will never deny my Lord. I was a guilty sinner. Jesus took my sins to the cross. “Jesus died for you in public. So don’t only live for him in private.”

by Tommie Sue Turner
¼ cup soy sauce 1 tsp. lemon juice
I’ve had the opportunity and pleasure to go to Alaska two times, and one of my favorite foods to eat was their delicious grilled salmon. Not only is it delicious, but it is even healthy for you. Be careful not to overcook though.
Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add brown sugar, soy sauce and lemon juice. Cook until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and cool. Rinse salmon fillet with water and pat dry. Cut fillet into six to eight 4 oz. servings, leaving skin intact. Place fish skin side down in a shallow, non-porous glass dish. Pour ¾ of the cooled marinade mixture over fillets, making sure they are well coated. Cover and marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Grill fillets on lightly oiled surface of grill at medium high heat

By Tom Turner Some have asked me why I take harsh stands on local problems. The reason is simple. I care. I care because I am proud to call Fannin County my home. I’ve been in the newspaper business right here for over 42 years, and during that time have taken many unpopular stands, when I thought it was the right thing to do. I care because I’ve spent some time on various boards and projects, and I understand the responsibility that comes with leadership. I served on the Bonham I.S.D. Board of Trustees long before most of the current board members were born. I was Chairman of the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors when the prisons came to Fannin County. I was one of the founding members of the MultiPurpose Board and helped oversee its building and growth. I served on the Planning & Zoning Committee for the City of Bonham. I served on the Industrial Foundation Board. I
understand the responsibility one undertakes to serve their fellow citizens/community. We’ve all heard the saying, “If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.” I’ve stood, many times alone, to keep Fannin County from falling prey to those who do not have our best interest at heart. I made Fannin County my home many years ago, and I love living here. I have raised my girls here, cried with friends who needed a shoulder to cry on, cried on friends’ shoulders when I needed a friend, enjoyed everything this wonderful place has to offer to all. As far as the current issue with the four school board members, each member involved was contacted and explained that if they would just resign, nothing would be exposed. Had the four board members voluntarily stepped down, that would have possibly kept TEA from stepping in to monitor BISD. You may be surprised, and possibly shocked, at the exposure of their irresponsible actions, but they were not surprised. They knew it was going to happen. I didn’t want this to go as far as it has, but the circumstances did not change. I felt a
responsibility to you, the good people of Fannin County, to do the right thing. Currently, several of The Leader’s customers have told us that Jason Walker has asked them not to advertise with The Leader. Why would he want to hurt their businesses, and why would he want to hurt the people who work at The Leader? Unfortunately, pressure is what these four board members; Jason Fox, Randy Pendergrass, Chance Roberts, LaTonia Arris and board member candidate Jason Walker understand. Is this the type of leadership you want to be in charge of our school finances and our children? Think this one through… Some say it takes courage to do what I do, but when you know you are doing the right thing, it’s not courage. It’s just doing the right thing…because I care. If you take time to read the following grievances filed to the Teachers Education Agency (TEA) in Austin by Dr. Faith-Ann Cheek, you will understand my hesitation to publish the complete details.
The responsibility of The Leader is now over regarding the school board matter. We have reported on the legal costs, the personal text messages, and Dr. Faith Ann Cheek’s grievances. Now the decisions will be made by the citizens of Fannin County and TEA.

Call to Order / Establish Quorum – The regular Commissioners Court meeting was called to order by Judge Moore on Tuesday, April 23, 2019. A quorum was established as all commissioners and the judge were present. 2 Invocation – David Woodson gave the invoca-
tion. 3 Pledges – Glen Estes, former US Army Specialist 5, veteran of Viet Nam & Korea, led the pledges to the U.S. flag and then the Texas flag. 4 Public Forums: • Joe Ward addressed the commissioners about creating a vibrant downtown Bonham for the citizens and

encouraged them to look at older buildings on the square as possible government space. He pointed out examples of restored buildings serving the citizens now, such as Rebel Roots, Breakfast Stop, Main Street Title and The Clutter. With the growth anticipated for Fannin County, there are developers that have interest in older buildings on city squares for condos, apartments, businesses and so forth. Joe then applauded the commissioners on their transparency and for being pro-active with the courthouse dilemma. • Tom Jackson wanted the commissioners to find out why a 911 dispatcher did not call out a rescue team for the following event: On April 14th at 12:30am, Mr. Jackson’s sister and 3 children got stuck in what he referred to as a ”suck hole” on CR 2955 at the end of CR 1743. His 2 nieces walked until they could get reception to call 911, only to be given a number to a tow service. Mr. Jackson stated that a tow truck will not go down to that area and he and his

He requested an answer as to why rescue was not called to help them. • Melanie Grammar gave a very interesting history lesson on Lake Fannin. She then encouraged everyone to attend the public celebration of the return of Lake Fannin to Fannin County residents. The celebration is this Saturday (April 27th) at 10:30am. Congressman Ratcliffe will be at the celebration and it is a time for Fannin County residents to embrace the county’s history and to thank the many people who have worked so hard, for many years to make this happen. • Gail Young reminded everyone that Relay for Life is this Saturday at the Multipurpose Complex. There will be a Caregiver & Survivor Lunch at 11:30am and the kickoff to the event will be at 1:30pm. • David Keene informed everyone about a book “Lake Fannin Saved” by John Gregory Hall. This is a revised edition that includes the lake’s path through congress. Books are $25 and can be bought at The Fannin County Leader, Creative Art Center and the History Museum. • Newt Cunningham explained that by profession he is a trial attorney. Trial attorney’s usually pick a side, build a case for that side to win, and are usually not objective. Regarding what is needed for the Justice Center, Newt asked the commissioners to put partisanship behind them, to not pick a side, and to build up & not build down. How do you build up? Ask; how much square footage do we need and how much money do we have to spend? You do not need to worry about who is in favor of what proj-

If a 2,000 pound animal walks out in front of a car, it could hurt someone. The only reason the wrangler would be called, is because the owner could not be found. Sheriff Johnson said that there was an article in the paper 3 to 4 months ago asking people to register their cattle so they could be identified easier and returned to the owner quicker. A Simple Economics Lesson for Us All
By Dale McQueen You and your family sit down and budget to earn $50,000 next year from your jobs, investments, retirements, or whatever you depend on to pay your bills each year. But when you add up your regular bills, house payments, and just living, you will spend $60,000. Thankfully, you have $10,000 in a bank account that you can use to cover the difference between what you will make and what your expenses will be. During the year, you work a few extra shifts or get a bump in your pay that you had not budgeted for and you end up making $53,000. You were careful with your expenses and only spent $56,000 during the year. Life should be great, you made more than you expected and spent less than you planned to. Life is grand. Reality: You are $3,000 poorer than you started the year out at because you spent your savings to cover the difference between what you made and what you spent. Simple economics: Spend more than you bring in and you lose money. Case in Point: In 2018 the Fannin County General Fund planned to bring in and spend $12,878,572. Just like the example above with your family, they used
$2,735,792 out of their bank account to cover the difference between what they expected to actually bring in and what they wanted to spend. During the year they brought in $10,894,292 actual Dollars – $752,512 actual dollars more than they expected to. Expenses were $1,560,923 dollars less than expected at only $11,317,649. What a great year for the county: Brought in more than expected and spent less than planned. Reality: The county general fund is $399,975
poorer because they spent money out of savings to cover the difference between what they made and what they spent. Only one department was listed
as spending more than 100% of their budgets for a total of $18,173 more than budgeted. This number is a long way from the $752,512 dollars collected by the county that they were not expecting. Lesson for us All: Every

report you look at may say you are still within your budget but unless you know where the money is coming from to fund your expenses you can still be slowly draining your bank account. In 2017 the Fannin County general
fund lost $466,055 for the same reasons even though they brought in $330,165 more than they expected. You can find this information in reports on the Fannin County Auditor’s website.

A List of Goals is not a Strategy, Candidate Clint Cheek Shares Strategies for Bonham ISD
First, I would like to express my gratitude for the kind words I have received1/29/19 from those of you that attended the Forum and to those of you at the open house at the high school. It has been a pleasure receiving your ideas and comments. Like all great conversations should, your feedback has sent my mind diving into points of discussion I hope to have the opportunity to share with the board. This made me realize as a board member I would like to see greater transparency and better, faster communication with parents and community members. The current board meeting process does not allow for dialogue between Board Members and the public. When serving on the board, I will welcome discussion with fellow parents and will have a monthly master mind/coffee hour to meet and talk with community members. A topic of conversation has been, “Money Spent Money Wasted.” It would be my pleasure to open the discussion to evaluate and determine how to claw back any money we can. Last week, I reached out to some contacts that do this kind of work and am eager to share ideas with the other board members and the community.

for
While there are many goals I would like to achieve if elected, a list of goals is not a strategy. Last week I mentioned creating partnerships across the city, county and region. In my past work experience I spent several years in the health insurance industry. I have already taken action and reached out to some business contacts within my network to further discuss cooperation with health insurance offerings. If elected I want to explore BISD joining their health program [under current regulations] with other local ISDs and Municipalities. There are other types of organizations currently doing this. I would like to get a discussion going with one of the national carriers to discuss reducing our health premiums. Health care in Fannin County is not the same as Frisco or Houston; we may have an opportunity here. Bonham ISD has several buildings and facilities with deferred maintenance issues. To facilitate those maintenance remedies we need revenues. In my mind there isn’t much more aggravating than someone who says “we have a problem” with no suggestion or idea to fix it. My goal will be to generate revenue through people visiting or moving to our district. If we are going to improve BISD with dollars it should be through business traffic (sales and hotel tax) and new families relocating to our area (new tax payers). These avenues will allow us to attain our goal without raising the tax rate on current tax payers. The goal is attainable, but what is the strategy? Should our teacher’s contracts include additional pay for those teachers who reside in our district? Incentivize faculty to reside in BISD. This would have a positive impact on home values, increase our student count, lead to the building of new homes and create jobs. All of these put dollars into this community. With the growth we already see occurring in and toward Fannin County, HWY 82 is like a necklace across North Texas, we have the opportunity to build Bonham into the Jewel on that necklace. Sure I would love to build an indoor, air-conditioned dome of a Softball or Baseball complex, but that isn’t realistic. What is realistic – simple upgrades to athletic facilities, hosting tournaments to drive business traffic from visitors, leasing our upgraded facilities to surrounding schools for revenue, generating new outside dollars into town to pay for the simple upgrades. Six years ago, the district underwent a major overhaul, several large steps forward. Let’s keep the momentum. Keep improving achievement, retain and recruit new talent, grow them into leaders and see them move on and be more successful. I am talking about students and staff. We want BISD to be a shining mark on their resume. We want a Winning Culture. My young athletes hear “Leave it better than you found it” – “You’re an athlete, you are held to a higher standard, you must live up to it” – “your team is depending on you to do the right thing” – “you are better than you think you are” – “doesn’t matter what happens, only thing that matters is that you Play Hard.” My little youth sports teams have a winning culture, even when we lose. I hope they remember these things when they get to something hard in life. I consider this pretty good advice for a Board member like me. There are over 1000 Independent School Districts in Texas and Over 600 Charter Schools together serving more than 5Million Texas students. We have very specific guidelines as board members, support the Superintendent, we have creative lead-way in how we improve the “Experience at Bonham ISD” You can vote at City Hall on May 4th, come downtown to Heritage Day and sneak over and vote. PS – I endorse the campaign and candidacy of both Sean Floyd and Clint Hemby. Both Great Guys! And one correction. The question of ”Do you believe Kelly Trompler should be named Superintendent?” was not asked at the Forum, last weeks article was submitted before the forum. The question was anticipated but did not come. However, I stand by the answer had the question been asked at the forum.
Local Group Quilts for Charity, Holds Annual Garage Sale May 17 - 18 Every Tuesday a group of women from Leonard, Trenton, Van Alstyne, and “the County” get together in an old-fashioned “calling” of a quilting bee. They have been quilting together for about the last 20 years, using fabric that has been mostly donated to them. They “tie” about three quilts a week, depending on the size of the quilt and the size of the group. They talk about a little of everything, and are convinced if needed, they could settle the problems of the world. In 2017, the group decided they would make a lap quilt for each of the veterans in Bonham’s Clyde Cosper Nursing Home. So, in less than three months, they did. Mind you, this was basically five women doing the vast majority of the work, although they would never ask for the credit. The group quilts for agencies such as C.A.S.A., the American Red Cross, the Pregnancy Center, Fannin County Family Crisis Center, and more. On May 17 and 18 they will be holding their annual garage sale to earn money to purchase batting, thread, and other supplies. Please consider coming out and supporting this group. The sale will be held at 806 S. Pearl in Trenton.

Music in May at the Creative Arts Center: Concert May 3 and AllDay Music Festival May 11
The Sons of Fannin. Courtesy photo By Lisa Avila, Executive Director Creative Arts Center May is a busy month for music at the Creative Arts Center each year. The Music in the Garden series began over 10 years ago and has become a tradition at the center. This year, with the Red River Art, Wine & Music Fest in May, there’s
an even bigger month of music. The Children’s Chorus of Greater North Texas, directed by Heidi Scheibmeir, will perform on Friday, May 3 at 7 PM in a musical memorial to Elizabeth May. Scheibmeir is a granddaughter of Elizabeth, who was a longtime resident of Bonham and well-known to the

community through her many years employed at American Bank. The Creative Arts Center is thrilled to provide a venue for this talented group of young singers who range from 3rd through 12th grade. There is also a Grads Choir whose members are high school and college students. Tickets for the event are $5 - all proceeds go toward the Creative Arts Center’s Summer Camps. Guests are invited to come early and bring a picnic doors open at 6 PM. On Saturday, May 11, the sixth annual Red River Art, Wine & Music Fest hosts a full lineup of performers. The Dynamite Drummers of Neblett Elementary kick off the day with their energetic drumming/dance troupe. Local guitarist Samir Prasain performs next, followed by the Sherman Police Department Regional Pipe Band. The Little Goddess Trybe of belly dancers returns again this year, followed by more
local musicians - The Bonham Big Band Express. Music continues with more local talent: Matt Foreman, followed by Katherine Vaught and Wayne Tarpley and the day finishes with a performance by Sons of Fannin at 5 PM. Admission to the Red River Art, Wine & Music Fest is free and this great festival celebrating the arts and music has something for everyone. For more information visit the Creative Arts Center and the Red River Art, Wine & Music Fest on Facebook or www. creativeartscenterbonham. com. Citizens Speak-out about Asphalts Plant’s Location
By Sandy Hood The Bois D’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission held a public hearing on April 24, 2019. This hearing was held to give citizens an opportunity to voice their opinion and concerns about the location of where Austin Road & Bridge are currently planning to build an asphalt plant. The plant would be built on Pecan Road at Bicentennial Road. This is on the north side of Highway 82 and half of the plant would be in the city limits of Bonham. There would be about 150 – 175 big trucks in and out of the plant 6 days a week, with each truck weighing about 40 to 80 thousand pounds. There is a safety hazard involved with this many trucks crossing Highway 82. The mix will come in hot and the plant would maintain the heat. Because this proposed plant falls within the 5,000 foot buffer of Bois D’ Arc Lake, the Bois D’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission has the duty to ensure that everything done in this area falls within the guidelines of the Lake Zoning Manual. The Commission explained to the audience that they have made no decisions and are there to gather facts. Judge Moore stated that 3 of the 4 present on the commission have no interest other than the betterment of the community. Bob McCraw, who also sits on the commission, owns the land that Austin Road and Bridge would be leasing to build the plant. Mr. McCraw has recused himself from voting and decision making regarding this issue. The commission is currently looking to see if the location for the plant is a good idea or bad idea. They are on a fact finding mission and want to do what is best for the citizens, county and city. It is this commission’s job to look at circumstances and conditions, including quality of life for citizens, and make recommendations to Commissioners Court. The commission is looking at safety issues of the plant as it pertains to motorist and pedestrians, drainage, on and off street parking, safety and fire hazards, noise, light glare, heights of structures, traffic concerns and compatibility with surrounding area. Austin Road and Bridge representative, Eric Schranz spoke to the crowd and stated that this is their 101th year in operation and their core values are safety, service, and integrity. They currently operate 5 asphalt plants and the Bonham plant with be the 6th. This plant will be a portable, continuous drum plant to service the US 82 job and will take 300 tons of hot mix. If we do not build at the location on Pecan Street, we will find another location along US 82 where we can set up the plant. Pecan Street is an ideal location because it is close to the city, close to power and a natural gas line. They will not be making cutback asphalt which is the one that creates the odor. There will be water trucks to keep the dust down and the property will have a paved truck route on it. Part of the plant is a back house that traps dust and reintroduces it back into the mix. What people see coming out of the back house is steam and not dust. We have had 1 complaint in our operating plants and that was in Celina for odor. Texas Commission on Environmental Quality investigated and cleared the plant of odor. Concerns from Community Members • Odor – A number of people are concerned with odors, and a point was made that just because there is no smell, does not mean there is no harm. • Noise – Residents are concerned about the noise levels of 150-175 big trucks on
US 82 and from them coming and going from the plant. They are also concerned about the noise of the backing up alarms form that many trucks at the plant. Some stated that US 82 already sounds like Central Expressway in Dallas when they are in their yards and asked that • Diesel fuel emissions from trucks coming and going from the plant. • Harmful chemical emission from the plant. There was expressed disappointment that Austin Road and Bridge could not answer questions regarding toxin levels and citizen exposure. • USDA Katy Creek Retirement Village shared great concerns about the plant being at their front door. This property is a service to the City of Bonham, and is an affordable community for elderly and people with disabilities. The asphalt plant will greatly affect the future of this property and if they lose residents because of intolerable conditions, they will have to close down. They are a USDA funded property and USDA is not lending money for this type of property any more. They pay people to live there and the people would not have a roof over their heads if they did not live there. • Traffic hazards of 150-175 big trucks trying to cross US 82. US 82 traffic may have to come to a complete stop several times a day as there will possibly be a big truck making that turn every 3 minutes, 10hours a day, 6 days a week. The point was made that where the trucks will be crossing US 82, is already a dangerous place to turn. Mention was made of accidents that occur there now, without the trucks crossing. Tongrun International, who is located on Pecan, right across the road from the proposed plant, stated that they have advised their employees to go further down US 82 to turn to come to work now, to avoid what is already a dangerous place to cross US 82. One resident stated that there is already a fatal accident in this location every year. • Property values of residents close to plant may decline because of odors, air quality and noise. Reference was made to the dump in Melissa, where houses were already built when the dump was came in, and then property values decreased because of the odor. They dump may be in compliance, but that does not keep nearby residents from smelling unpleasant odors and who wants to buy a home where you have to smell trash odor every time you go outdoors. • Water runoff from the plant going in to creeks and possibly new lake. • Economic issues – Bonham is growing and the area along 82 is prime property for hotels, restaurants and so forth. What will having an asphalt plant in this location do to potential incoming businesses? • One citizen stated, “Should we consider what is more convenient for them or what is in our (the citizens) best interest and well-being?” Judge Moore posed 3 questions to the citizens that attended this hearing and asked that they raise their hand to show which group they fell into. 1) Are you against the proposed location for the asphalt plant? Majority of the people in the room raised their hands. 2) Do you have concerns? 1 person raised their hand. 3) Are you in favor? 0 people raised their hand. 4) The Fannin County Commissioners Court will be holding a public hearing regarding the asphalt plant on April 30th at 8:00am.

Page 22 • April 30, 2019 We can’t What You Are NOT Being Told rale. pay what McKBy Chad Burnett There is a lot of information that has come out regarding the four members of the Bonham ISD School Board named in a grievance filed against them. There have been many opinions coming from both sides. So, let me explain as a former Bonham ISD School Board member for six years, why these text messages are so important. What these text messages show and what these four individuals are guilty of is called a walking quorum. You learn in the first few weeks of being a new school board member, with orientation through Bonham ISD and in all the education hours that you were required to get as a school board member, that you are not allowed to email, text, or call other board members in an attempt to try to find out or encourage them on how each and every person will vote on any given agenda item. A walking quorum is illegal and it cannot happen. That’s exactly what these four have done. This is why all four must resign or be removed immediately. Now...... here’s why they did what they did. When
Dr. Marvin Beaty was hired, it was obvious there was a “buddy system” within the district. If you were not or could not do your job, no worries, a job was created for you. Friends and relatives were protected instead of being removed. With the hiring of Dr. Beaty, that ALL STOPPED! You did your job, or you were no longer employed. The “buddy system” was being broken. Hires were made based on the MOST qualified and not on a friendship. Do you remember before Dr. Beaty arrived, the only way teacher raises could occur was through a 3 cent rollback tax???? This was due to all the “extra” positions created to protect the “buddy system.“ Those jobs went away and all employees were given raises without your taxes going up every year he was superintendent. Dr. Beaty was a genius and worth every penny when it came to the budget and finding money and ways to improve BISD!!! Well... as you can imagine, there were some upset people because they lost a very easy job. Let’s be honest, we did lose some good people along the way. However don’t let these people spin it as low mo-

New coaches bring their coaches and some coaches on staff have to leave. That’s not disgruntled employees. That’s the coaching business. So, we now have 4 board members being backed largely by those mad about no longer running the show. Their objective was to fire the superintendent and those he hired, instead of their friends or themselves. That’s exactly what they did. They ran off the superintendent. They need to just own it! They need to admit it!! They did what they said they were going to do. They cannot hide behind words like retirement. As pointed out by Clint Hemby, at the candidate forum last week, when they tried this “retirement” storyline (or flat out lie), you don’t pay off the remaining year to year and a half of a retiring person’s contract. When they retire, they retire. End of story! Done! But that’s NOT what happened. When questioned on this, the story changed and they couldn’t discuss personnel issues. Why not?? They have discussed it on Facebook, e-news( oddly enough that “libel” article has been pulled down), and they attempted to discuss it at the forum???? They only can’t discuss it when called out on their bogus excuses????? Now here’s the grievance issue. They are now after those hired by Dr. Beaty and loyal to Dr. Beaty. They have the 5 votes to fire them as well. What they don’t have is JUST CAUSE. They can’t fire them based on job performance. Which means to fire them would result in them buying out more contracts plus the law-

suits of wrongful termination, costing the district hundreds of thousands of more taxpayers’ dollars, on top of the legal fees. By the way, the grievance is not against BISD. Therefore, BISD IS NOT required to pay for their legal expenses. Their actions caused this. We go back to the walking quorum caused this. A walking quorum is illegal. That’s why their text/emails were subpoenaed and awarded to the assistant superintendent as proof of their wrong doing. Yes, I know, their attorneys paid almost $23,000 to a so called “independent” investigator to find no wrong doing. I would bet a truly independent or an investigation by the other side would find the truth for $23,000??? GUILTY??? Especially, after the texts are read. It doesn’t matter if you like Dr. Beaty or not. He’s gone! He’s not coming back! They did what they said they were going to do! They need to just be honest and admit it. They should not hide behind other things because they don’t want the taxpayers to know what it has cost them, and still costing them with current grievances because things are NOT being done on the up and up! Now these people want to stop The Leader from printing THEIR own texts by trying to convince people to pull their ads. Come on! Really?? I guess when you're caught, it's the only way to get people not to read for themselves what you're hiding! When you can't defend YOUR OWN actions, try pointing the finger at others. Maybe they'll forget what you've done! They can’t be mad at The Leader or Tom Turner because THEIR texts are being printed and lawyer fees caused by those texts are costing taxpayers a ridiculous amount of money. Some people will believe Dr. Beaty should have gone at any cost! You have the right to that opinion. I would disagree! I would encourage everyone to go vote and voice your concerns at the ballot box and attend school board meetings.
David Woodson, Fannin County Treasurer joined hundreds of colleagues from around the state at the 47th Annual County Treasurers’ Continuing Education Seminar in Austin, April 15-18. The annual seminar offers county treasurers the opportunity to learn new and vital information to better serve Texans. This year’s seminar sponsor was the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. The graduate school provides continuing education opportunities through various seminars, institutes and conferences, many of which are planned and conducted in collaboration with professional organizations of public officials, such as the County Treasurers’ Association of Texas (CTAT). The annual seminar helps county treasurers complete their minimum continuing education requirements, which are required by the state. The seminar offered 20 hours of credit to treasurers attending all of the sessions, five hours of Public Funds Investment Act credit and five hours of continuing education for the County Invest-
ment Academy. Topics in this year’s program included: • How to properly administer the FMLA; • Unclaimed property reporting for county offices; • Depository contracts, the solicitation process and contractual requirements; • Foundations of confident portfolio management; • Roundtable discussions on best practices with counties of similar populations; • An update on issues from the 86th session of the Legislature; and Offered again this year was an optional Human Resources Fundamentals mini-conference. Participants learned of employment “landmines,” trends in human resources, requirements under federal laws, harassment and other human resource issues facing county government. A highlight of the event each year is honoring the nominees of the Texas’ Outstanding County Treasurer Award during a luncheon ceremony.

While many area schools finished off a fourday Easter weekend on Monday, April 22 -- made a day longer via an unused bad weather day -- Bonham arrived at their home field that afternoon for a previously scheduled nondistrict game that filled its second district bye date. Due to the turnaround after a rough district start, the game also served as a playoff warm-up game for the Purple Warriors. “We’ve stepped up as a team. There was not much leadership last year,” said sophomore pitcher Tanner Reaves, the freshman of the year last season in 11-4A baseball and 103A basketball sixth-man award winner this year. “With Gaige Craven, Austin Fortune and Dawson Bradley [three of the six seniors on the roster], all have stepped up and come together, being a young team.” “Sophomore year, we went three rounds deep. Last year, we did not have much chemistry as a team. No leadership,” said Fortune, most frequently at catcher, in his third varsity season. “We have good chemistry this year. “This group will be really good; I’m sad I will be leaving. They work hard,” said Fortune. “We have put in the hours it takes to be a playoff team. Our first goal was to clinch a playoff spot. We started doing well and kept setting goals.” The postseason advance in baseball continued the success for team sports in year one of the realignment into 3A for Bonham. “It’s really been a complete turn around from last year in all sports,” said Cravin, a left fielder, center fielder and a part of Bonham’s postseason qualifiers in football and boys’ basketball. “All the new and returning coaches have pushed us to set the bar higher and not expect less,” he said. “We have bought into the new ideas and work ethic. It has taken us far.” Note: Bonham will play Whitesboro May 1-3 in a Region II-3A bi-district baseball best-of-three series at Veteran’s Field in Sherman. Each game will start at 7 p.m.
Bronze-medalist Kelley nets State encore for LHS tennis
Leonard’s Kenna Kelley. Courtesy photo By Rich Hilliard LEONARD -- Garnering a state tennis bronze medal in 2018 -- as a freshman -- af-
fected Leonard’s Kenna Kelley this spring. “I’ve worked harder,” she said, “so I can do better than last year.” Kelley will get that chance on May 16, when she starts play in the two-day Class 3A Girls State Tournament at Texas A&M University at College Station. “I feel like I have improved a lot over last year,” she said. “I think my mental game has gotten better and my strokes. I (also) stay more focused into the match.” Head coach Lisa Davis has made similar observations about Kelley, as the sophomore this spring earned her way back to State. “The big thing has been that her mental game is stronger. She doesn’t get frustrated as easily,” said Davis. “She has grown up. She is more fierce of a competitor. She attacks more.” Kelley has again endured only a few losses along the way this year. A couple came at a Wills Point event where she faced 4A and 5A competition. The others occurred as Leonard competed in team tennis -- where Davis found the competition to be “higher.”
An unorthodox experience at the Region II-3A Tournament held April 1819 provided an additional challenge for Kelley, as rain delayed the start of the event by a day. Additionally, her semifinal match was still going after 10 p.m. on the first day. “I kept positive vibes,” said Kelley of enduring the delays. “Every chance I got, I would go hit balls [while waiting].” Her approach worked, as she dropped no sets en route to defending her regional title in girls singles to qualify for State again. As the reigning champion, Kelley garnered the top seed at the regional, as she likewise had had at the District 10-3A Tournament via her overall season record. “The competition was just as hard at district,” said Davis, noting Whitewright’s Juliann Kelley (no relation) and a 2018 state qualifier in 2A from Bells. Now, Kelley will face some of the best in Texas in 3A. She will start with a quarterfinal match against Corpus Christi London’s Sara Humpal, another region’s runner-up, on May 16 at 9:30 a.m. to begin her State encore. Said Kelley: “I feel proud of myself that I made it back to State again.”

WHITNEY -- Five Ector tennis players qualified and two will be alternates for the Class 1A State Tournament May 16-17 at Texas A&M University. J. B. Johnson and Nathan Essary will return to State for a second-straight year after winning in boys doubles at the Region III-1A event on April 19 to advance. Joey Grijalva and Destiny Whitburn advanced in mixed
doubles and Kenny Nelms did likewise in boys singles with regional runner-up finishes. Meanwhile, thirdplace regional finishes garnered state alternate status for Maricela Salazar in girls singles and Lalito Grijalva in boys singles. The qualifying quintet nearly equaled Ector’s previous total who have advanced to State -- eight -- during head coach Terry Johnson’s 25 years of overseeing the sport.

In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs.
