Bonham Welcomes New Police Chief
Press Release - The city of Bonham is pleased to announce the hiring of Andrew Hawkes as the new Chief of Police.
Chief Hawkes is currently the Chief of Police for the city of Sunnyvale Texas. Prior to Sunnyvale, Chief Hawkes was the Chief of Police for the city of Jacksonville Texas (Population 13,000).
Sunnyvale is a rapidly growing community that borders the cities of Mesquite, Garland, and Forney. Chief Hawkes was tasked with starting the first Police Department for the city of Sunnyvale, the city had previously contracted with the Dallas County Sheriff’s office for law enforcement.
Prior to beginning his career as a Chief of Police, Hawkes spent 15 years at the Collin County Sheriff’s Department working his way up to Lieutenant.
Chief Hawkes holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Dallas Baptist University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice and Administration from the University of Texas at Dallas. Chief Hawkes holds both a Master Peace Officer License as well as a Certified Public Manager Certification.
The City of Bonham received over 25 resumes during the search process. Working with a consultant, the city organized a search and screening committee comprised of both members of the community and professionals from the region. The screening committee conducted interviews of 10 applicants and narrowed the list to 4 candidates recommended for city administration to interview.
“We had four very qualified candidates that both myself

and my administrative team interviewed. We invited the top 2 selections back for follow up interviews.” Stated City Manager Sean Pate "Appointing a leader for our Police Department is among the most important decisions we make as a city, and we know that Chief Hawkes is the right person for this particular job,” said City Manager Sean Pate. “He understands our current community needs and he understands the challenges that a growing community experiences as it relates to law enforcement. Chief Hawkes is a proponent of both community involvement and community policing, and he strives for best practices recognition as defined by the Texas Police Chiefs Association. We are confident he will build upon the foundation that Chief Bankston so loyally dedicated his career to.”

These roasted rainbow carrots are lightly caramelized around the edges, crisp-tender in the center, and seasoned with rosemary, thyme, and parsley!
2 pounds rainbow colored carrots, trimmed, peeled, and cut on the diagonal into ½" pieces. (you can use all orange carrots also)
2 Tbsp. olive oil
1 Tbsp honey
2 to 3 tsp. fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1 tsp. fresh thyme
1 tsp. salt, or to taste
1 tsp. pepper, or to taste
2 to 3 teaspoons fresh Italian flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
2 tsp. lemon juice

Preheat oven to 450° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Add the carrots to the baking sheet, evenly drizzle with olive oil and honey, and evenly sprinkle with thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper. Toss with your hands to evenly coat. Arrange the carrots in a flat layer with space between the pieces if possible and bake for about 30-35 minutes or until carrots are lightly caramelized around the edges and fork-tender. Stir and flip halfway through baking to ensure all sides cook evenly. Evenly sprinkle with parsley and drizzle with lemon juice, and sere immediately.
I serve these beautiful carrots every Easter and they are always a hit!
I hope everyone has a blessed Easter.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Kevin Mayberry, Constable PCT 3, Fannin County
John E. Hunt, Sr., Deputy Constable PCT 3, Fannin County
The month of April is declared Child Abuse Prevention Month as well as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Both are observed all month in support of the victims, to bring awareness forward and to recommit to the elimination of these two national crises.
The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) defines “child abuse as all forms of physical and or emotional abuse, torture, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment, or commercial or other exploitation resulting in the actual or potential harm to the child’s health or dignity”.
The Texas Penal Code as well as the Texas Family Code each set forth our laws and definitions pertaining to Child Abuse in Texas. Basically we are talking about the acts of human trafficking (as mentioned in a previous article), physical and mental abuse and domestic vio-
lence. Domestic violence is the root cause and effect in child abuse in many cases.
The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) estimates that over 700,000 children (Child is defined as anyone under the age of 18 in Texas) are victims abused or neglected in the U.S.. An estimated another 2,000 plus die because of abuse or neglect.
We have become a “throwaway society” and what used to be honored and cared for has fallen by the wayside. We have cultures in our society that see nothing wrong with dumping a newborn in a dumpster or using a child as a sex object for monetary gain or beating a child in domination. With the influx coming across our borders we have more homeless children that become targets for abusers and human traffickers. These are the known represented and reported cases. Abuse can come from a dysfunctional family member, parental bullying, traffickers, corporal punishment at home or day care centers. More children are in day care centers because
both parents work, and more single parents. Child abuse is real and it prevalent in all parts of the country and we, as a nation, state, county and city, no matter how large or small, must deal with it. If you think someone is abusing a child it is up to you to report it. Parents see it, family members see it, teachers and others see it. Law enforcement and health care professionals, along with teachers are mandated by law to take action. If you have any doubts about it happening talk to the staff at the Child Advocacy Center. Be the solution, not the problem. This is a two part article and as mentioned previously, April is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the agenda placed on the act of sexual assault and the violation of the victim and their rights. By definition in the Texas Penal Code, Chapter 22.011 Sexual Assault is defined as “Forcing another person, by violence or threats of violence, to perform a sexual act or sexual assault with an object.”
According to a 2015 study by the University of Texas and validated again in 2019, out of 3300 sexual assault victims interviewed, 65% of the survivors experienced sexual assault more than once.
Sexual assault is an act of violence and dominance by one person on another without their consent, the victim can be either male or female, same gender, not same gender. The Bureau of Justice Assistance under their Crime Prevention
Program offers these recommendations to avoid sexual assault: be alert to known associates that might have forceful attitudes towards you, avoid trouble spots, avoid dark areas and if your going to your car, have your keys out, never leave a drink unattended in a bar, and there are any number of precautions a person can take.
Date rapes are not uncommon, especially in a college setting with alcohol present, watch the amount of alcohol you consume. Domestic sexual assault is not uncommon in a hostile relationship. Again, remember, sexual assault is possible in all gender relationships.
If you are sexually assaulted go immediately to the hospital or law enforcement, DO NOT shower or change clothes, they will contain the assaulters DNA and will be important in preventing it happening to someone else. If someone has done it once there is probably a trail of others. Especially true in colleges. Remember “NO means NO” and the common statement “he didn’t mean it and won’t do it again” is a myth. Remember also that you, the victim, are not at fault….and you do not have to just accept it.
Again, if you have any doubts a sexual assault is happening, speak to the staff at the Fannin County Crisis Center about the numbers they see. Keep in mind a large number of sexual assaults are not reported, if not reported, the assaults continue, if you are sexually assaulted find a professional counselor to talk to…YOU are the solution, not the problem.

Helping Your Overweight Dog
By Gregg Flowers
Obesity is the number one nutrition related problem in dogs, and while it's possible it can be caused by a metabolic disorder, the main cause is over feeding. Overweight dogs are prone to heart disease, cancer, canine diabetes, constant fatigue, skeletal problems and other debilitating, life-shortening problems. That's right. An overweight dog won't live as long. (By contrast, wolves are traditionally fairly lean.) Your vet can give you a ball-

park idea of how much Max needs to lose and offer recom
mendations on a reduced fat/ weight reduction dog food. He can also help you evaluate how much your dog should be eating. The idea of course, is to cut calories and increase exercise. Feeding him smaller portions,
more frequently will help him adjust to his new regimen, and as I mentioned last time, traditional treats are pretty much (begin ital>out<end ital). What you could do however, is substitute carrots, broccoli, celery, apples, green beans and so on. He might not like some of those things, but some of them he will love. Wolves eat a variety of things, but be careful and stay away from foods harmful to him like grapes, raisins, onions, and macadamia nuts.
Undoubtedly, Max needs more exercise. Start out small, then go large. If you have kids you can even make exercis-

ing the dog a daily task. At first, walking may not work in the case of a truly obese dog . Water training could prove a useful substitute here, because it bears the dog's weight. Talk to your vet about that. - As for walking; With a small dog, start out with a 1/4 mile each day, and work your way up to 1 1/2 miles. With a big dog, start out with 1/2 mile each day and work your way up to 2 miles. Next time a little bit more on helping your overweight dog.

Not By Faith Alone
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
The scriptures teach us that we are redeemed “with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb” (1 Peter 1:19). We find ‘by grace we are saved’ (Ephesians 2:8). Paul tells us that if we will “confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Again, we find that “we are saved by hope” (Romans 8:24). The scriptures tell us that “according to his(God’s) mercy he saved us” (Titus 3:5). Peter informs that “baptism doth also
now save us” (1 Peter 3:21). Jesus is “the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9). It is the culmination of these things working through God’s will that one can have salvation. Many would pick out one or two things for salvation instead of the sum of God’s Word. The psalmist expresses this truth, “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them!” (Ps 139:17). It is true that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16).
There is just one verse in all

of the Bible that has the words ‘faith’ and ‘only’ together. “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only” (James 2:24). James further records that “so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17).
We are told that “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). We understand that we are “justified by faith” (Romans 5:1). “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only” (James 2:24).
Free Salvation...
Salvation is free.- Free, but not cheap!
By Wil Pounds
Wil is a graduate of William Carey University, B. A.; New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Th. M.; and Azusa Pacific University, M. A. He has pastored in Panama, Ecuador and the U. S, and served for over 20 years as missionary in Ecuador and Honduras. Wil and his wife Ann have three grown daughters. He currently serves as a Baptist pastor and teaches seminary extension courses in Ecuador.
Your salvation is a gift freely given and received from God, but it is not cheap. It is the most expensive gift you will ever receive. God comes and offers us free salvation. But He does not change His standard. He remains a righteous and holy God.
How could it be possible that Jesus Christ could die as a substitute for my penalty as a sinner? It is because He is the infinite God, not a sinful man that He could die for an infinite number of sinners. Because He is God He could pay the eternal punishment for all of our sins.
Second Corinthians 5:21 tells us it was not enough that He should only die and pay the penalty of our sins, but that His perfect righteousness would be counted in God’s eyes as our righteousness. All of the pure righteousness of Jesus Christ is now available through Him to the believing sinner. Based upon the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, God can now come and offer the great invitation to all sinners to come and join Him in heaven.
How do I know that this is absolute truth? Look at the empty tomb! Christ is alive! The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the proof that God is eternally satisfied with the sacrifice of His Son on the cross. Now you and I can take
the righteousness of God and go boldly or trembling to the scales of justice and put it over against all the perfection God has demanded and that He must demand. The balance is immediately made. The Christian believer stands before God justified. God can never have anything against you and me forever.
You are justified when you trust in that perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, rather than in your own self-righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21). You will never be justified in the eyes of God if you cling to your own good works.
We can sing with great profound theology: “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling.” We are justified by faith alone, through grace alone, in Jesus Christ alone. However, we are not justified by a faith that is alone. Therefore, if you really go to that cross, believing in the saving work of Christ, you will be abounding in the works of the Lord.
If our salvation is received as a free gift someone had to pay for it. Since you and I did not, who did?
The apostle Paul tells us that Jesus Christ redeemed us, not with perishable things like silver and gold, but “with precious blood, as of a lamb un-
blemished and spotless, the blood of Christ” (1 Pet. 1:19).
Our salvation is an expensive gift which we do not deserve and cannot merit! We were “redeemed” meaning to release, to purchase a release by a ransom, to deliver by the payment of a price. Our spiritual freedom was purchased with the great payment of the blood of Jesus Christ. Thus, the grace that saves us is not cheap.
The blood of Jesus is “precious.” It is of great value, precious to God. The most precious thing to God is the blood of His Son Jesus.
Therefore, how precious you and I are to Him!

Russell Heights
By Malinda Allison. Fannin County Museum of History
The 9th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham
Although none of the original homes remain, the Russell Heights neighborhood of Bonham was in the late 19th and early 20th centuries the elite neighborhood of Bonham. Centered what is now Russell Avenue, it contained grand homes built on full city blocks.
John W. “Jim” Russell built the first house.
The grounds of these homes included barns for horses and buggies before the coming of the automobile. Most of the homes had tennis courts.
According to an article by Dr. William F. King, the lives of the people of Russell Heights were filled with
sports events, dances, operas, parties and other social activities. Some “house parties” lasted several days.
Russell Heights had its own opera house and a skating rink, which was also used as a dance hall.
Most of the men of Russell Heights held professional positions in the community and were also generous toward civic improvements. There was a gun club called the “Skeet Club.”
The ladies held elaborate luncheons and parties. The homes were lavishly decorated for these parties with
flowers and beautiful dish es, and detailed write-ups
about these parties were in the newspaper.
Russell Heights was not within the Bonham city limits, but in the later days of Russell Heights the children attended the Bonham public schools.
As discussed in the previous article on the Bonham street car, the men of Russell Heights established a street car that ran from Russell Heights into Bonham.
Lake St. Clair was in Russell Heights and provided an opportunity for swimming. In some years there was ice skating on Lake St. Clair. The kids also played hockey. The race track was located where the old Bonham golf club was.
The baseball field was also located in the area.
Most of the houses eventually burned. Because Russell Heights was outside the city limits, there were no fire hydrants and it took a long time for the Bonham Fire Department to arrive and address a fire.
Eventually the lots were subdivided and smaller homes built. In 1942 the Bonham Housing Company started building new houses in Russell Heights on land northeast of the Golf Club. In 1957 the Bel-Air Addition in Russell Heights was begun, with 42 new homes.

Letter to the Editor
To the person who threw a kitten into oncoming traffic, your action was witnessed by many people. You know who you are.... you are the person who doesn't have a heart.
This took place at 273 and Rec Rd 3, Saturday morning. God was looking out for this baby. In spite of your evil act, this kitten not only lived, but is thriving.
I wonder if your family will toss you away when you are no longer useful to them.
Thank you to the man who rescued the kitten, after a miracle took place. Five vehicles dodged it before he could grab him off the road. Thank You, also, to those drivers who tried their best to not run over it.
People say there is so much ugly in our world today. That's true, but this incident proves there is more good than evil.

Accolades for an Honorable Chief
Story and photos by Rose Schwartz
Thursday, March 23, 2023, the public was invited to join with local dignitaries, and family & friends of Bonham Police Chief Mike Bankston to recognize the forty-nine years of law enforcement service Chief Bankston has provided Fannin County; at his retirement celebration held at the Roy Floyd Community Center. Bonham Code Enforcement
Officer Mark Posey led all in an Invocation before Mayor H.L. Compton would speak and assure everyone in attendance that though Chief Bankston was retiring from the Police Department, he was not planning on moving away, so he would be nearby if needed (once a public servant...) Bonham City Manager Sean Pate would speak next and share fond and humorous memories of when he first met Mike before presenting a beautiful bouquet of
red roses to the other half of the Chief’s team, his lovely and supportive wife of 51 years, Lou Ann. Those who spoke afterward, would include one of Chief Bankston’s lifelong friends, Carl Adams, who shared lighted hearted and interesting recollections of Mike’s life like him not being fond of horseback riding (funny story) as well as his being the youngest sheriff in Texas when appointed to the post April 15, 1978 (he was 26 years old.) When he lost the election for that position by two votes in November, he returned to the Bonham Police Department (where he had been serving as an officer from April 15, 1973, till he was asked to fill the sheriff’s seat) and worked his way up with the Bonham Police till his promotion to Chief on May 1, 1984.
All the speakers had different stories of their acquaintance with Chief Bankston, but everyone had one thing in common, a sincere love and respect for the humble Christian man who has not only served faithfully for forty-nine years in law enforcement but has consistently volunteered his time and services with his church and groups such as the Salvation Army, Creative Arts Center, Texoma Regional Police Academy, Open Arms Homeless Shelter, and the Fannin County Crisis Center.
Presenting Chief Bankston with various gifts of appreciation after their words of praise for the Chief of Police was Bonham Police Captain Wendell Bockman, Chief Bankston’s Secretary Natalie Massey, Bonham Fire Chief Scott Ridling, Bonham Superintendent of Streets Joe Howdeshell, Paris Police Department Captain Terry Bull and Legislative Assistant to Representative Pat Fallon, Erik Simien. Before attendees were invited to enjoy the refreshments provided, Chief Bankston introduced his family and thanked everyone for their attendance and their heartwarming words before thanking the great community of Bonham for allowing him to serve as a police officer.

FANNIN COUNTY ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE WISHES TO THANK THEIR LINEMEN!
#thankalineman
America’s Electrical Cooperatives
Designated the second Monday of April as National Lineman Appreciation Day.
The resolution, adopted unanimously by the NRECA Board of Directors, says this about lineman and the proper recognition of their contributions:
“Whereas linemen leave their families and put their lives on the line every day to keep power on; Whereas linemen work 365 days a year under dangerous conditions to build, maintain and repair the electric infrastructure; Whereas lineman are the first responders of the electric cooperative family, getting power back on and making things safe for all after storms and accidents; Whereas there would be no electric cooperatives without the brave men and women who comprise our corps of linemen;
Therefore, be it resolved that NRECA recognize the second Monday of April each year as National Lineman Appreciation Day and make available to electric cooperatives, materials and support to recognize the contributions of these valuable men and women to America’s Electric Cooperatives.”
On April 10 this year, Fannin County Electric Cooperative will honor the dedicated people who work in challenging conditions to keep the lights on. We proudly recognize all electric linemen for the services they perform around the clock in dangerous circumstances to keep power flowing and protect the public’s safety.
Our co-op linemen maintain over 2300 miles of line with nearly 12,000 meters in Fannin and parts of Grayson, Collin, Lamar and Hunt counties.
“Our linemen are the first responders of our electric distribution system, and they work around the clock on high-voltage lines,” John Ed Shinpaugh General Manager/CEO says. “Conditions can be dangerous, but they power through to ensure reliable service for our members.”
Fannin County Electric Cooperative invites all our members to take a moment and reflect on the work that our linemen are doing during these tough times associated with COVID – 19. If you post on social media, use #thankalineman to show your support for the heroes who light our lives.

Trenton s'ball rises in rankings, continues run through 15-2A
Top-5
DC's Mauppin, Chaney all-state
Senior Lindsey Mauppin and junior Addyson Chaney of Dodd City each earned all-state notoriety in Class 1A from the Texas Girls Coaches
Association for the 2022-23 girls' basketball season.
Mauppin and Chaney in February helped the Lady Hornets: win their 11th-consecutive undefeated district title, make a second-straight regional semifinals trip for their ninth-con-
secutive regional tournament appearance and extend their postseason streak to 13.
Mauppin also joined Ector seniors Karlee Haggard and Hope Ball on the TGCA 1A all-state academic teams.
Trenton improved its position in the softball rankings on March 27, while continuing to defend its District 15-2A title. The 2A Lady Tigers (15-1-1) improved two spots to No. 19 in the Class 1A/2A rankings by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Class 2A Crawford continued to lead the 1A/2A poll, which still also included 2A Como-
Pickton -- the only team to defeat Trenton thus far, back on Feb. 23 -- at No. 5.
Whitesboro, the opponent with whom Trenton tied before district play on March 3, held the No. 13 spot in 3A
Trenton shortstop Kaylee Loving looks to throw to first base to complete a ground out on March 25 at Dodd City.
where Grandview led that poll.
On March 28, Trenton completed the first half of 15-2A softball undefeated.
Securing Significant Success: Comeback Bells win continues Bonhi's turnaround s'ball season
photos
BONHAM -- A lack of a district tiebreaker with Bells last season left Bonham's Lady Warriors out of the softball postseason for the first time since 2008.
Another meeting in 11-3A play with Bells occurred on March 24 -- but it went Bonham's way this time.
Junior Reyleigh Shockley's
walk-off three-run double lifted the Lady Warriors to a 5-4 win.
It assured them, at the least, of a home-and-home split with the postseason powerhouse Lady Panthers, in case of
another season-ending tie in the district standings.
The victory also continued a turnaround district campaign for Bonham which improved to 4-1 in 11-3A play.

Just a mile or so east of Bailey along side of the old Bonham to Greenville dirt road was a one room school known as Frog Pond. I'm sure there were frogs but I don't think there was a pond.
William and Mary London had a farm just a few hundred yards south of the school where they raised their eleven children.
Prior to the school being built their children walked to 3P to attend school. So circa 1900 my grandfather (William London) being a master carpenter built a school so his children didn't have to walk so far to school.
The school employed one teacher for grades one through ten. Not only did the London kids attend but other children near by did as well.
The school remained open until 1926 when it was decided to consolidate with the Bailey School.
In 1926 the building was sold to the Traylor Gin Company as its office located in Bailey. The building was loaded up and mules pulled it to it's new home where it still stands just west of the Bailey Post Office. You can't miss it with its green roof

and plain wood siding and as a testament to the workmanship of those that built it 123 years ago.
All that remains as a reminder of its previous location is a well in an overgrown pasture near the intersection of CRs 3722 and 3726.

Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 59 degrees. Crappie are good on jigs and minnows. Blue catfish catches are good drifting with cut bait.
Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 55-62 degrees; 1.53 feet below pool. Bass bite has its good days and slow days. Points and the edge of grass lines are best with Texas rigs and Carolina rigs with lizards and creature baits 2-4 feet. Frogs over grass and some buzz baits are also working.
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 0.30 feet above pool.Crappie are in spawning grounds in 1-5 feet in flooded grass or submerged buttonwillow bushes vertically fishing a 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jig. Solitary fish are in 5-12 feet of water, or fishes in packs near structures using LiveScope. Use 1/16 ounce jigs or under a slip bobber at whatever depth they are hanging. The colors doesn’t seem to matter, but black and chartreuse or white and chartreuse will produce. White bass are showing up in the creeks and rivers. When scouting the creeks, look in eddies along the banks near the creek rapids. Focus on bank cave-ins, debris piles, and riprap, and structure that deflects the current and forms a small eddy downstream.
Ray Roberts SLOW. Water is stained; 53 degrees; 0.83 feet above pool. Fishing has been slow due to inclement weather, but this should improve as spring-like weather is in the forecast. White bass are in the creek spawning. Some undersized catches in the main lake. Crappie are fair in the mouths of creeks biting on jigs and minnows in 3-12 feet of water. Bass are fair in shallow water on beds using spinnerbaits. Shad should be on the bulkheads in the coming weeks, but are not there just yet. Where there is baitfish there is game fish.
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 60 degrees; 0.29 feet above pool. Hybrid striper and white bass bite are good with many fish spawned out but some with eggs. Seeing lots of fish in open water and numbers on humps and points. Slabs and swimbaits are working best. Trophy catfish bite is winding down. Eatersized blue catfish bite is in full swing using fresh cut shad in 1-5 feet of water. Crappie bite is hit-or-miss on warmer days in 1-3 feet of water.
Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 65 degrees; 0.50 feet below pool. Striped bass are slow on artificials, but anglers fishing with live bait are having success in deep water. Striped bass are in the peak of the spawn, which can make the bite tough. Striped bass are good on live bait drifting flats in 30-50 feet of water. A few warmer weeks and the stripers will go spawn. A lot of smaller fish on humps in 25-30 feet of water fishing live bait. Crappie are fair on brush in 8-10 feet of water fishing jigs but the minnow bite will turn on in the creeks soon.
“Would You Like Fries with that Ticket?” — While on his day off and at his residence, a Kenedy County Game Warden heard a vigorous knocking at his back door. Opening the door, he saw a larger brand new red four-wheeler parked at his back door. The person who knocked said he wanted some information about where he could ride his new All-Terrain Vehicle on the creek and go hunting. The warden noticed the person did not have the required safety equipment and asked for his ATV certification. The person advised he had bought two brand new ATVs and was not aware of the rules. When asked where he came from with the ATV, the person advised he rode it over from his girlfriend’s house in Sarita. The warden then issued the subject a citation and sent him on his way. The warden said he is now thinking of putting a drive-through citation and confession window at his residence.
Boat-Ropers ’R US — After an all-night shift on Falcon Lake, wardens received a call about two cow dogs who had run a cow into the lake, which is a common occurrence. What is not common is the cow tried to swim to Mexico in the widest and deepest part of the lake. The wardens happened to be about a mile down the lake and went to assist. They were in a 17-foot boat and located the cow about 600 yards from the bank. The wardens made contact with the tired animal, and the rodeo began. After a lengthy battle between beast and boat, the boat won, and the cow was taken to shore without much incident.
Happy Gator Ending Recently, a Limestone County game warden responded to a call in Leon County about a nuisance alligator. The alligator was traveling

back and forth between two landowners’ ponds. One landowner reported the alligator had killed two calves. Assisted by the local landowner, the warden located the 8.5-foot alligator cruising around his pond. The alligator had just traveled from one pond to the other because of kids playing on the dam. The alligator was relocated to another area. Wake-up call — An Angelina County game warden filed charges on two local men for Class A hunting without landowner consent. The first suspect was found passed out in the road ditch on a farm road with his girlfriend. When the first suspect was awakened, he advised that his buddy and the buddy’s girlfriend were stuck on a logging road. The buddy and his girlfriend were located, and they had two loaded shotguns with buckshot and a “plugged-in” spotlight.

Striking the Balance Between Lake and Pipe Patriot Scholarship Applications Being Accepted
March 2023
Press Release -
Between Lake Ralph Hall and where the raw water pipeline will connect into the existing Chapman Pipeline is a component that will keep the whole water delivery process in balance—literally.
The balancing reservoir will be located between the new pump station and the delivery point facility, at one of the higher points along the pipeline. It provides a separation
between the pumped and gravity-flowing sections of the pipeline and will help control water flow into the Chapman Pipeline. Both sides will be able to hold around 15 million gallons and may be operated together or one at a time to allow maximum maintenance flexibility. To maintain the best water quality, the balancing reservoir will be kept at a set water level and constant flow.
The Fannin County Republican Party and the Fannin County Republican Women’s Club would like to announce that they are now receiving applications for their 2023 Patriot Scholarships. There will be three (3) scholarships awarded.
Two $500.00 scholarships will be awarded by the Fannin County Republican Party recognizing Fannin County students who best exemplify patriotism, civic dedication, volunteering and good works toward their fellow citizens. There must be at least three letters of recommendation along with a minimum
300-hundred-word essay on "How to Encourage Political Activism in Young People?"
A $500.00 scholarship will be provided by the Fannin County Republican Women, PAC using the same criteria. Applications have been distributed to all the school districts’ counselors in our area. For an application and selection criteria, please contact Joyce Buchanan at 903-4564855 or email joyce@ becausethingshappen. com. The application and required information must be received by Friday, May 5, 2023.
Delivering Water from Lake Ralph Hall
March 2023
Press Release - Delivering
Water from Lake Ralph Hall A crucial and important part of the Lake Ralph Hall project is being able to transport the reservoir’s water to UTRWD’s service area. Only then can it be treated and delivered to homes and businesses.
UTRWD is building approximately 32 miles of pipeline, consisting of 66inch and 72-inch-diameter pipe to transport water from Lake Ralph Hall. This new pipeline will connect the reservoir to an existing pipeline that currently delivers water to UTRWD’s system from Chapman Lake (see below).
In addition, UTRWD is building a pump station, balancing reservoir, and delivery point facility to guide the water on its way from Lake Ralph Hall. The lake’s raw water pump station will initially have three pumps capable of pushing 55 million gallons/day to the balancing reservoir near the end of the

Denison, Texas - The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has awarded Grayson College’s Center for Workplace Learning (CWL) a $349,999 Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grant. The JET grant will fund the purchase of instructional equipment for the Industrial Maintenance Technician (IMT) and Programmable Logic Controller Technician (PLC) programs. The addition of this new equipment will increase the instructional capacity of the programs and enhance the learning environment in these skills-oriented, hands-on programs. Student enrollment capacity in the IMT program will grow from 14 to 24 and in PLC from
“I am thrilled that the Texas Workforce Commission has awarded Grayson College another JET grant,” said Dr. Djuna Forrester, CWL Executive Director. “TWC’s JET grant enables meaningful, positive impacts on education and in turn the workforce. With this funding, the CWL can increase enrollment in IMT and PLC without increasing tuition rates, providing greater value to our community as a whole.”
“Grayson College relentlessly focuses on student success, and having the equipment needed to provide top-notch training is a key element of student success,” said Dr. Jeremy McMillen, Grayson College President. “Once again, TWC has shown itself to be a true partner in the economic growth
A nine-month program, Industrial Maintenance Technician (IMT) began in 2009 in effort to meet the growing demand for mechanics skilled in the repair, installation and maintenance of production and processing machinery. One hundred eighty students have enrolled in IMT over the past 13 years. The Programmable Logic Controller Technician (PLC) program began in 2020 in response to employers’ needs for employees with specialized skills in operation, testing, maintenance and calibration of PLCs. The second cohort of PLC students will complete this four- month program in December. Successful completers of either noncredit program can receive credit toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month and our upcoming Clothesline Project
Press Release - April is designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).
The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual assault, abuse, and harassment, and to educate communities about prevention methods. Sexual violence impacts every community and affects people of all genders and ages. Due to many cases not being reported, the official numbers are likely underestimated.
Statistics according to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) regarding sexual assaults:
•Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted.
•One in 6 women and one in 33 men have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.
•Every 9 minutes, Child Protective Services finds strong evidence for a claim of child sexual abuse. In many cases, the abuse leaves long-lasting effects that cause mental health issues in adulthood.
If you or anyone you know has experienced any form of sexual assault, please contact Fannin County Family Crisis Center. The center has many ways to aid the survivor. All services are provided free of charge.
•24-hour hotline
•Crisis intervention by trained advocates
•Transportation to safe shelter
•Hospital, court, and law enforcement accompaniment
•Women’s Empowerment Classes and Domestic Violence Classes
Additionally, Fannin County Family Crisis Center invites you to decorate shirts to spread awareness by participating in our Clothesline Project! The Clothesline Project serves to educate the community and allows survivors of sexual abuse/ domestic violence to heal by decorating a shirt. Survivors can express their emotions and share their stories anonymously by decorating a shirt to hang on our display in April. Shirts
can be designed in groups or on your own, whichever you prefer! Anyone can decorate a shirt, not just survivors. Some may decorate shirts in memory of a loved one lost to violence, and some may participate in solidarity with survivors.
If you would be more comfortable decorating your shirt at home, please give us a call and we will provide you with a shirt. Shirts need to be completed and returned by April 17th to be added to our display.
To join a group painting party, the dates are as follows: April 11th at 5:30pm; April 12th at 12pm; April 15th at 12pm. All parties will be at the crisis center. For noon parties, you can bring lunch if you would like. You must RSVP to reserve your spot to paint a shirt!
Fannin County Family Crisis Center is located at 118 East Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham.
The phone number is 903583-7694, and the hotline number is 903-583-7000.
IMT completers earn a Level 1 Certificate and PLC completers earn an Occupational Skills Award.
Across the State of Texas, there are more than 5,000 annual openings for Industrial Machinery Mechanics and PLC Technicians. In the Sherman-Denison metropolitan statistical area there are approximately 5,300 positions for Industrial Machinery Mechanics.
Employers and individuals interested in the Industrial Maintenance Technician and Programmable Logic Controller programs can find more information at grayson.edu/cwl or by contacting Grayson College’s Center for Workplace Learning at 903-463-8765.
Ira spent 16 years at Braniff Airways. When the company closed, he found employment in law enforcement. First at the Dallas County Jail, then moved to The Colony Police Department where he spent 10 years. He thought his law enforcement career was finished when he retired after 11 years as Chief Deputy Constable for Pct. 2 of Denton County, but following retirement he was asked to fill the position of Constable for Pct 3 in Fannin County.
Ira was a devoted member of the Masonic Fraternity, having been raised a Master Mason in June of 1976. He served in several lodges in north Texas and took pride in being a Mason and in the principles that Masonry stands for.
He loved football, particularly the University of Texas and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved high school football and especially enjoyed the privilege he had as a police officer of being able to watch the games from the sidelines. He enjoyed fishing and watching his great grandkids when they would come for a visit.
Patti and Ira purchased their home in Honey Grove in 2001 and he took on the task of bringing the old Victorian back to life. He was a member of McKenzie United Methodist Church in Honey Grove and was currently a member of Constantine Lodge in Bonham.
He touched the lives of many people throughout his 79 years. He will be greatly missed.

DODD CITY, TEXAS 150 YEARS SEPT 8 1873 – 2023
3rd in a series
By Andy & Sherri Weeks
The fall of 1873 was a busy time in the new railroad town of Dodd City. The tracks were being laid, constuction on the depot was moving fast and land was being purchased for businesses and homes. Some of the first new buildings were the STEPHENS HOUSE, a hotel located north of the depot on the NE corner of Hwy 56 and N. Main. Another, was the GENERAL MERCHANDISE store located across main street from the hotel. The Nov. 21, 1884 DODD CITY WEEKLY SPECTATOR AD states the store “now in its eleventh year” lets us know it was established in the fall of 1873.

The hotel and store were co-owned by Benjamin Logan Royse and Hugh R Stephens. Mr. Royse was married to the daughter of Hugh, Mary Texalina (Texie) Stephens, and granddaughter of George Stephens of the Stephensville community, now known as Lannius. The Stephens family had several land grants in the area and had a store in Stephensville named “Stephens & Lanius.” That store was broken into on June 2, 1881 per Dallas Morning News 6-3-1881 news clip. The hotel in Dodd City was burgliarized sixteen days later per the Galveston Daily News clip. The Stephens’ married into families like; Biggs, Moore, Wallace, Lanius, Kincaid and Sadler all who became a part of Fannin County and Dodd City history. (more on this in the next article)
