On this Memorial Day weekend many memories are recalled but one stands out among the others that is why I call this “A memory among memories”. It was on the morning

of September 5, 1944 that my B-24 crew took off from the air base at Hethel, England as one of 40 planes in the 389th Bomb Group destined to bomb the rail yard in Karlsruhe, Germany. We were approaching our target when we encountered very heavy antiaircraft fire. Our plane was so heavily damaged that we had to surrender our leadership role and drop out of formation. Unable to remain airworthy we were ordered to abandon by parachute. Four of our crew members lost their lives in the crash. One was my best military friend, Lt. Charles Davis. Lt. Davis, my barracks roommate, and bombardier, with whom I flew side by side in combat had

Memorial Day, is for me, more personal and meaningful because of this memory. The nine months spent at Stalag Luft I added seasoning to my life and I am convinced that it prepared me to cope with life to come. I salute the memory of these four crew members who gave all. I pray for the safety of all our military personnel today and the families who live in anxious moments while they are apart. If you like strawberries and rich desserts, this one is for you! STRAWBERRY OOEY GOOEY BUTTER CAKE
Preheat oven to 350°. Lightly grease a 13” x 9” pan. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, butter and 1 egg. Press mixture into bottom of pan. In another large bowl, beat cream cheese and 3 eggs at medium speed until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioners sugar until combined. Stir in chopped strawberries. Spoon over cake mixture. Our cattle are branded and filed with Fannin County, and they have been for years. There are some questions and we believe there is some very wrong doing. You can check on them in the morning but by afternoon a tree may have fallen on your fence and the whole herd could be out. Normally you get a call from a neighbor. We were home all day on May 12th, except church. We receive a call at 7:25pm that our cattle were being loaded up by the law. We arrived on scene within 5 minutes and were approached, “Don’t shoot us, don’t shoot us.” We did not know what was going on. We saw cattle in a trailer and Ronnie asked if he could see them. This incident is pretty suspicious to me. • Dale McQueen stated that Allen Rich of North Texas E-News had to run a correction on an article he published, regarding Turner Construction wanting to bid on part of the courthouse restoration. Dale stated that, in fact, Turner construction by state law cannot bid on this restoration project. Dale presented the court with a copy Title 10. General Government, Subtitle F. State and Local Contract and Fund Management, Chapter 2269 - Contracting & Delivery Procedures For Construction Projects, Subchapter A. General Provisions, Section 2269.203 – Limits on Construction Manager-Agent. A construction manager-agent may not; (1) Self-perform any aspect of the construction, alteration or repair of the facility; (2) be a party to a construction subcontract for the construction, alteration or repair of the facility; (3) provide or be required to provide performance and payment bonds for the construction, alteration or repair of the facility. Dale stated that it is his understanding that Turner Construction sent a letter to the commissioners wanting to bid on part of the restoration project. They are already being paid 1.3 million dollars to oversee the restoration project and they previously stood in this court and said that they would not bid on this project. • James Manis approached the court again and stated that one of Bonham’s graduation seniors broke 4 national power lifting records over the weekend. 5 Introductions – Former Fannin County Sheriff, Donnie Foster was recognized. 6 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve Minutes for 05/09/2019 (S) – Commissioner Precinct 1 for County Clerk – Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve the minutes. Motion carried. 7 Discussion regarding EMS Monthly Profit/Loss Report – Commissioner Precinct 1 for Bonham Fire Department Chief – Commissioners had report and there was no discussion. 8 Discussion, Consider-
ation and Action to select members for the Fannin County New Facility Building Committee – Commissioner Precinct 4 – Dale McQueen addressed the court first. He said that his concern regarding this issue is based on what Commissioner Lackey said 2 weeks ago. Dale stated, “Your funding is going to be your Certificate of Obligation because that is the only way that you can get money out of the North Texas accounts, otherwise it has to be Ad Valorem taxes for a bond election. Certificates of Obligations really should be left for emergency type issues. The court has had almost 3 years to work on this project of a new Justice Center. I don’t understand how this would qualify for not going before the voters at this point. A Certificate of Obligation does not have to go before the voters. So, you all have to vote on that.” Dale asked the court to look at this a little better and to have a bond election before this is over. Dale gave the court a copy of a pamphlet on Public Finance from TAC (Texas Association of Counties). Commissioner Lackey stated that they needed to appoint the committee to be in line with a motion made a few weeks ago. Committee members per all commissioners are as follows: District Judge Blake, District Attorney, Richard Glaser, District Clerk, Nancy Young, Court at Law Judge Butler, County Judge Moore, Commissioner AJ Self, Allen Sanderson, Francis Moran, Kevin Peterson, John Keene and Charlie Copeland. Commissioner Lackey stated that he will put on the agenda for next week, to discuss what the scope of work will be for the committee. A member of the audience asked that the commissioners not vote on the members this week, because he wanted time to investigate the community members named. This item ended up being passed until next week. 9 Discussion, Consideration and Action to install internet at 108 E. Sam Rayburn for the Courthouse Restoration Project, $156.31 per month to be paid out of the bond money –Commissioner Precinct 1 for County Purchasing Agent – Michelle Case explained that this item is for internet service for the Turner Construction office. January 2019, AJ Self became County Commissioner of Precinct 2. Roads have been his priority. Unfortunately, it has rained every week since he took office. “Rain has been one of my hardest obstacles since coming into office,” Commissioner Self said. It was evident that he takes his job seriously and wants to complete repairs and work in a timely manner. He talks about his road crew with the utmost respect. “I have a great crew! They are very hard workers and they are always willing to go the extra mile.” It was also obvious that his crew respects him. How wet or dry the roads are, plays a major part in road conditions. Roads being too wet causes washouts and chug holes, and roads too dry causes dust. The work crew from Precinct 2 have been adding a lot of rock to the roads and have been working on the roads every chance they get, to try and catch up on road issues and potholes. I met with the crew who shared that they

are eager to be out working on the roads. The rain has kept them busy applying preventative maintenance on equipment. This will help extend the life of the equipment, but they really prefer to be out taking care of the roads. This past week, Precinct 2’s road crew planned on grading roads and installing 3 culverts. The rain has put these tasks further behind. Commissioner Self explained, “The amount of rain Fannin County has experienced, causes chug holes and washouts on the roads. One week of sunshine does not give my crew enough time to cover 225 miles of road.” The sunny week of May 13th, the crew was able to make some headway, but they can only cover so much road a week. If roads are too wet, the crew will just be pulling mud and fluffing the road. The crew cannot blade a road that has too much water on it because it will fluff the base and the road will lose its support. Commissioner Self, expressed an eagerness to get started on pulling ditches and fixing some drainage problems,

but the rain keeps delaying the work. Roads that need crowning have been delayed because the wet ditches continually cause the blades to get stuck in the mud. Commissioner Self said that mud seems to be like a sponge and just swells up when the crew is trying to work with it. It is near impossible to get it shaped correctly. The crew has had an
increase in culverts to put in this year, due to all the new construction in the Leonard & Trenton area, but it is hard to get in the ditches with all the standing water. There has been damage throughout the county from all the rain since last September. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with the county to provide some money to repair damages from the natural disaster of “TOO MUCH RAIN.” Don’t get me wrong, rain is good, but too much rain is affecting road work, farmers, contractors and others. Commissioner Self showed me pages and pages of repairs and tasks on his to do list. All the crew needs is several days without rain. He asks that everyone please be patient. As the hot, dryer months approach, the crew in Precinct 2 will continue to work hard to improve county roads. The Fannin County Commissioners are not responsible for state highways or farm to market roads. Even though I met with Commissioner Self for the purpose

Every county in Texas has 4 commissioners that represent an area of the county that is roughly equal in population to each other. They are a member of Commissioners Court, who are in charge of overseeing the administrative functions of the county. In rural counties like ours, the role of a commissioner is quite substantial. Collectively, the county judge and all 4 commissioners are what form Commissioners Court. Some of Commissioners Court’s duties are: adopting the county’s budget and property tax rate, approving all county expenditures, setting employment and benefit poli-
cies for the county, authorizing contracts on the county’s behalf, overseeing all county buildings and facilities, setting precinct boundaries for commissioners & justice of the peace, and conducting bond elections. The commissioners are also responsible for building and maintaining county roads and bridges within their precinct. Commissioners serve both executive and legislative duties, meaning they enact local ordinances and administer them. Fannin County’s Commissioner’s Court meets every Tuesday morning at 9:00am at the Bonham City Hall. The public is welcome to attend. CONTRACT WRANGLER ESTRAY SERVICES Job Description/Requirements: Duties include, but are not limited to the following: • To humanly capture, load, transport and deliver impounded livestock animals. • To safely maintain the livery and board of all impounded livestock animals. • To transport animals requiring medical attention to the designated Vet for treatment and retur the same to the designated holding pens, if needed. • To make and keep a correct record of all things proper to be written and conveying appropriate documentation to the Livestock Officer with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, taking their receipt for the same. • To ensure the security, safety and welfare of all animals seized and/or impounded for any and every purpose in accordance with Federal, State and Local Laws. • To assist other agencies as may be requested by the Sheriff or an assigned designate. • To diligently perform any and all tasks as may be assigned. Other Requirements: Regular calls that require prompt response occur throughout the Fannin County area. Cowboys must be “in service” and on the road to the call, with all needed equipment, within 30 minutes of being dispatched. County Cowboys must be willing and able to keep a certain level of anonymity in their position. This anonymity facilitates security and helps to ensure the public may not readily gain access to the Holding Facilities. Cowboys musty provide and maintain their own equipment.
Photos and article by Sandy Hood The Cole-Moore Prison Unit and the Fannin County Detention Center held their annual memorial service in recognition of all Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) officers, as well as correction officers from around the country, who have fallen in the line of duty. The ceremony was emotional and touching as employees who died in the line of service were remembered for their ultimate sacrifice for the safety and the wellbeing of others. This was also a time to applaud all staff in corrections for their dedication and commitment to maintain the security in our prisons. The ceremony was filled with symbolism, reflection and honor. The colors were posted, followed by the lighting of a memorial candle which represents the living memory of those who have given their lives in the line of duty. A sweet little girl sang “In the Garden” as many attendees wiped the tears from their eyes. A Memorial Wreath was placed on display with 74 yellow flowers and 1 red rose. The 74 blue and white flowers represented the 74 employees that died in the line of duty in Texas since 1888, and the 1 red rose added, represented local Officer Rios who passed away this year (but not in the line of duty). Roll Call of all 74 TDCJ employees who died in the line of duty since 1888 was read followed by Stephen
Murden playing Taps on the trumpet. The “Riderless Horse” made its presence. It was black with a black blanket, a black saddle and a pair of black boots placed reversely into the stirrups to signify a fallen officer. The Missing Officer Table was presented by Sheriff Johnson. The table is round to show the everlasting concern for missing loved ones. The tablecloth is white, symbolizing the purity of their motives while answering the call of duty. The sword symbolizes honor. The single red rose displayed in a vase reminds people of the life of each of the missing loved ones. The vase is tied with a yellow ribbon, a symbol of the continued determination to remember and take care of loved ones. A slice of lemon reminds people of the bitter fate of those killed while protecting society. A pinch of salt symbolizes the tears endured by the families of those missing, who seek answers. The Bible represents the strength and faith to sustain those who continue. The inverted glass symbolizes their inability to share in this day. The chair, empty, symbolizes those that are missing. The ceremony ended with a balloon release. White balloons with names of those that died in the line of duty were released to the heavens. In 1984, a resolution was passed by the U.S. Congress that declared the first week of May as National Correctional Officers’ Week. President
Ronald Reagan clearly stated the reason for this period of appreciation and respect, saying, “No group of Americans has a more difficult or less publicly visible job than the brave men and women who work in our correctional facilities. The general public should fully appreciate correctional officials and their capable handling of the physical and emotional demands made upon them daily. Their profession requires careful and constant vigilance, and the threat of violence is always present.” I close this article with a BIG Thank You to all who work in correction facilities in Fannin County and across our nation. I have never really sat down and thought about what a hard job you have. If you know someone who works in a correction facility, let them know that you appreciate the work they do.
Minimum Requirements: • Must have a secure holding area. • Working cell phones. • Working 4 x 4 vehicle with enough power and torque to pull the appropriate trailers, fully loaded, in possible rough terrain. • Trailers should be large enough to hold a minimum of ten (10) head of adult cattle at one time with the capability of handling loads of 6,000 to 8,000 pounds. • Headlights and spotlights on vehicles for working dust, night or unlighted calls. • Portable cattle panels, (minimum of 8 panels). • Cowboy/s must have own ropes, ties, halters, and any other necessary accessories. Physical and Environmental Demands: Cowboys must be physically fit. Must be able to perform and withstand all the duties required of a “working cowboy/ranch hand”. May be required to occasionally work long hours. May be exposed to inclement weather. May be exposed to personal and/or environmentally hazardous conditions of all types. Minimum Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age and a US Citizen. Must have a current Texas Driver’s License. Must not have a conviction or adjudication of a Class B misdemeanor or higher offense. Must be able to pass a background check. Compensation: Net 30 days. NO County benefits. By Sandy Hood The last 2 weeks have consisted of Frontier Waterproofing conducting several mockups to determine the most appropriate and safest way to clean the limestone on the outside of the courthouse without damaging it. Several mockups have been performed using various methods; 24 hour application,48 hour application, double application, cold rinse, hot rinse and so forth. The last mockup area was cleaned Thursday, May 23rd. Turner Construction will now send
all data collected regarding the mockups to Architexas and wait for their response on how to proceed. Also on the outside, workers have been busy removing bricks from the window openings. The bricks were part of the 1960’s reconstruction, when they decided to put in smaller windows. The bricks may be several layers thick, because of the thickness of the wall openings. On the inside of the courthouse, only one mockup was needed on the ceiling. Workers have been able to move forward with the
cleaning of the ceiling. Air quality has been tested and the levels of lead are so low that Tyvek and respirators are not needed. Workers continue to wear heavy gloves to protect their hands from irritation from the products being used. On the inside, protective gear is being worn while working on the ceiling to protect the workers from falling debris and product drips. All water from the rinses are captured and pumped into barrels for special waste management because of the lead.

JOHNNY E. LEATHERS
On Tuesday, May 14, 2019, Johnny E. Leathers, 98, went to be with the Lord. Services were held Saturday, May 18, 2019 in Clarendon, TX with Brother Richard Leathers and Rev. Larry Capranica officiated. Burial followed in Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon. Arrangements were by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Johnny was born in Clarendon, TX to D.E. and Grace Batson Leathers on April 11, 1921. He attended school at Lelia Lake before transferring to Clarendon, where he graduated from high school in 1939. As a high school student, he enjoyed showing calves and won many awards one of which was Grand Champion. His family won a contest sponsored by the Ft. Worth Star Telegram in 1940 to become known as America’s Most Typical AllAmerican family. He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he served as a Navy Corpsman with the 4th Division Marine Corps. After the war, he finished college at Texas Tech University in 1950. He married Betty Murray from Gatesville, TX that same year. They were married until her death in 1981. He married Melba Brown in 1985. Johnny was a school teacher and farmer. He began his career teaching Agriculture at Tulia, and then transferred to Hedley where he taught junior high science. Finally, he transferred to Clarendon ISD, where he taught junior high science for over 25 years. He truly cared for his students. He retired from teaching in 1985. He was active with the Boy Scouts in the 1960’s as an assistant Scout Master. He was a Christian who loved the Lord. He was very active in the First Baptist Church in Clarendon, where he was a Deacon, and Chairman of Deacons. He loved his family and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his two sons, Richard and his wife Angela of Bonham, TX and David of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren, Amber, Timothy and his wife Krystal, and Matthew; six great grandchildren, Antonio, Jackson, Emma, Ian, James, and Maddox. He also leaves behind many friends and family. We want to thank Gina and Karen from Heart to Heart Hospice for their wonderful care of Johnny during his last months. Bonham Graveside services with military honors for Leo David Alford, age 72, of Bonham, TX were held on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at DFW National Cemetery. Mr. Alford passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Community Living Center in Bonham, TX. Leo David Alford was born in Pickton, TX on November 2, 1946 to AB and Clara (Harrelson) Alford. He served honorably in the United States Army from 1966 to 1967 during the Vietnam Era. Leo worked for a prestigious company in sales which allowed him to travel a lot before retiring. He is survived by, sisters, Marjorie Gilmer of Terrell, TX and Mary Allen of Rockwell, TX and Frances Wheeler and
Milton Ray Kirchmeier, was born August 31, 1942, to the late Earl and Jo Kirchmeier, in Clovis, New Mexico. He grew up and graduated high school in Alamogordo, New Mexico. After graduation, he, his parents and brother moved to Gatesville, Texas. He met the love of his life, Peggy Poston and they married in January 30, 1962. He then attended Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas where he graduated in 1968, with a Bachelors in Philosophy of Religion. He graduated from Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Following pastorship of his chosen churches, he returned to being a mechanic. He worked for Helm Larry Ford Dealership in Fort Worth Texas, for eight years, before moving to Salado, Texas in 1979, where he opened his own car repair shop, Milton

Kirchmeier’s Auto Excellence. He and his family ran this business for 32 years. Upon retirement, he and Peggy moved to Belton, to be close to his oldest son, Ray and family, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He resided, with his wife, Peggy, until his death on May 7th, 2019. Milton is survived by his wife, Peggy; brother, Leon; sons, Ray and John; daughter, Jana Payne; eleven grandsons; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Jo Kirchmeier. Milton was cremated and his memorial is scheduled for June 1, 2019, 10:00 a.m. at Anchor Of Hope Fellowship at 5700 FM 439 in Belton.

Jorene married her beloved husband Elbert Dewey Collinsworth on March 28, 1959 in Gainesville, TX; he preceded her in death on June 27, 2009 after 50 years of marriage. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. Jorene was a home maker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memories are her son, Carl Collinsworth of Diboll, TX; daughter, Fran Collinsworth of Monkstown, TX; son, Danny Collinsworth of Whitewright, TX; daughter, Sandra Smith of Ector, TX; daughter, Tammy Townsend of Bonham, TX and son, James Collinsworth of Telephone, TX; 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; sister, Lavell Blackshear of Bonham, TX and Imogene West of Denison, TX. Bonham - Mr. Lonnie M. Moore, Jr., age 95, born in Ada, Oklahoma moved to North Texas after military service and made North Texas his home. In later years he lived with his family in North Richland Hills, TX. Due to health in 2017 he moved to the Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Nursing Center in Bonham, TX where he passed away on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Lonnie M. Moore, Jr. was born in Ada, OK on August 19, 1923 to Lonnie M. Moore, Sr. and Betty (Reynolds) Moore. He married Bonnie Lou (Mayes) Moore in Meredith, OK; she preceded him in death on September 21, 1968. He was also preceded by many brothers and sisters: Jewell Moore, Edward Moore, Earl Moore, L.D. Moore, Bernice Moore-Morgan, Claria MooreScott and Ruth Moore-Patton. Lonnie worked for Rochester Germicide as a top salesman and retired with more than 30 years of service. Lonnie loved to travel and visited such places as New Orleans, Seattle, NY and countries England, Germany, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, Venice and Czechoslovakia. He will be remembered and cherished by his daughter, Karen L. Moore-Harris, 4 grandchildren, Patricia, Dwayne, Serena and Renea, also 4 great grandchildren. Lonnie was a Veteran of World War II in which he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp with distinction from 1942 to 1944. He was interned with military honors at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, TX on Thursday, May 23 2019. Norma was the type of person who loved; she thrived on serving and helping people and her community. Norma was caring and compassionate, no matter her situation she always thought someone else was in need more than herself. She was an active member of Telephone Baptist Church. She was instrumental in creating a charitable community outreach for Telephone Baptist church with the food pantry and clothes closet. She also helped to get the library established at her church and helped to keep the historical information of the community updated. Norma was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved us unconditionally and was always there for us without any regards to her needs. Our mother has entered into her eternal rest, though we will always grieve and miss her, we are rejoicing with her as she enters our father’s house. No more death, no more mourning, no more crying, and no more pain. Norma is survived by her Son, Danny Hankey; son, Rodger Hankey and his wife Sharon; daughter, Kimberly Townson and her husband James. Grief Support Group Offered by Home Hospice of Grayson County Sherman, TX – May 22, 2019 Home Hospice of Grayson County is pleased to announce the next six-week Support Group starting on June 4, 2019. The group will meet in the Home Hospice Office at 505 W. Center Street in Sherman, TX. Please register to attend. This group will have a biblical focus as those attending will have the opportunity to share, learn more from each other and find support in messages from the bible. They

Photography Workshop June 8 is to return to the arts center and download the photographs onto a laptop. A discussion of the images acquired and how to crop and present them will follow. Participants must bring a camera and a laptop and wear walking shoes. Any camera may be used including a cell phone, but participants must have the capability to download their images from their camera to their computer in some way. The cost of the workshop is $60 and includes entry into the Photography Exhibit which goes up June 21 - entries will be accepted between June 12 and June 19. Another Photography Workshop is scheduled from 9 AM to noon Saturday, June 8 at the Creative Arts Center. This workshop will include a “Photo Walk” on and around the Bonham square with the intention of producing an entry for the center’s upcoming Photography Exhibit. Jana Rash will conduct the workshop and has divided the three hours into 3 phases: phase one is a discussion of composition, exposure and focus and the 12 elements of a photograph. Phase two is the walk during which participants will take photographs of a wide variety of subjects they encounter. Phase three

It appears that the county may be floundering in regards to securing permanent space for those not returning to the courthouse which leaves Fannin County in a precarious position. What services will be located in the newly restored courthouse…….. what services are going to be located in leased space? Until the citizens of Fannin County makes a decision to either build a new Fannin County Courthouse Annex (FCCA) or renovate an existing building leased space will need to continue for some time. It is highly recommended that the county employ the services of a Consulting Architect/Engineer Firm (A/E) as a member of a Planning Committee.

Having professional services on the “front-end” of the planning stage will save considerable time and……time is money. These services will determine square footage space according to form and function………provide the county with a preliminary cost estimate and compose a comprehensive Scope of Work (SOW) for budgeting and solicitation purposes for a new facility and renovation of an existing building respectively. Step two: introduce the SOW(s) and cost estimate(s) to the citizens of Fannin County to determine whether to “build” or “renovate”. Step three: amend the A/E’s contract to provide design documents and project management. Step four: solicitations (sealed bids) for a General Contractor (GC). The photograph of a renovated downtown (or uptown) corner (FCL 4/16/29) reflects what can be done with professional planning and design services as opposed to building a new “Fannin County Courthouse Annex”. It is most fitting to renovate an existing historical building around the square or at least near the square. Renovating an existing building would complement the “historical” theme of Fannin County in conjunction with the “Courthouse Restoration” and local “traditions”. Most often people tend to lean towards building office space (office walls) as opposed to “open space” utilizing “systems furniture” and reserving “office
space” for supervisors/department heads. Whether renovating an existing building or constructing a new building the county may want to consider a “design-build” project. The “design-build” method of construction brings the General Contractor (GC) into the project during the design stage(s). It is not uncommon for the contractor to participate in design, methods of construction, material, man-power and trades required to accomplish the project. Once the construction documents (drawing & specifications) are completed the GC is in a position to provide the county with a qualified cost proposal ready for negotiations………. The County may also want to consider appointing a “Point of Contact” as a “liaison” between the A/E Project Manager and County Judge/Commissioners Court/Purchasing Agent. This would be an opportunity to rotate this responsibility among the County Commissioners to gain experience in Project Management from the counties perspective. With all due respect……… don’t attempt to manage this project like the Courthouse Restoration Project and expect different results. Leave project development and management to the professionals. It is irresponsible to pull “project cost” out of thin-air without professional calculations and a Statement of Work (SOW). Telling people what they want to hear without just cause is nothing more than “political gobbledygook”.

The Fannin County Republican Party & the Fannin County Republican Women, PAC sponsored the 17th annual Armed Forces Day Dinner and Celebration on May 18, 2019. It was certainly a night of fun and reflection as many broke bread together, participated in a silent and live auction, but most importantly, listened to a powerful message from Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Allen West. Scholarships were handed out to 3 Fannin County graduating seniors. This paragraph was taken from the program for the event: “West’s life has been defined as one of service, sacrifice and commitment to this Republic, The United States of America. West served during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. In 2003, he deployed his unit and continued to command as Battalion Commander of the 2nd
Battalion 20th Field Artillery, 4th Infantry Division during the Iraq War until his retirement from the Army in 2004 after 22 years. During his career, West’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star; Meritorious Service Medal (three Oak Leaf Clusters); Army Commendation Medal (three Oak Leaf Cluster, one Valor Device); Army Achievement Medal (two Oak Leaf Clusters); Valorous Unit Award; Air Assault Badge; and the Master Parachutist Badge and others.” Below is just some of what Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Allen West enlightened us with on Armed Forces Day: • Armed Forces Day is about service, sacrifice, commitment and something greater than us. • There are 2 groups of people that are necessary to sustain a society; the ones that teach the people and those that defend the people. Too often we do not give them enough respect. • In Bladensburg, Maryland, there was a cross, the Bladensburg Cross that had the names of the 41 members of that city that died in World War 1. The last World War 1 veteran died in 2011 at 110 years old. One day a couple of people driving by the cross said that they were offended by it and went and complained about it. They took it to a court and the court said that the cross would have to come down. That case had to be brought before the highest court in the land, the United States Supreme Court, to say that 41, who had lost their lives in what was supposed to be the war to end all wars, their names, would have to be destroyed. Reduced to rubble. • When we say thank you to a veteran for their service, do we
really mean it? • April 19, 1775, Paul Revere, he rode through the streets, “The British are coming, the British are coming.” What was the whole purpose of the British marching in? It was to destroy. On this day there was not a United States of America, no federal government, there was not an Army. There were just Americans. Americans that understood the word liberty. They understood that as long as they were armed, they could have their freedom. And, those few stood there and fired a shot that enables us to be here today. Some 240 some years later. • The flag of the United States Army has these 3 simple words; “This Will Defend.” • America is not a geographic landscape. America is an idea. An idea that men and women have been standing up and fighting for from 1775 to today. The idea of freedom. • What every person in America needs to ask themselves is; is every single willing person in America willing to step up and defend the principles and values of this great nation? • Does every single person in the United States of America understand the principles and values of the United States of America? “I don’t think we do.” • How is it we are hearing here in the United States of America that you don’t have an individual sovereignty, that your life, your liberty, your pursuit of happiness does not belong to you, that someone else is responsible for trying to guarantee your happiness? Someone else is the one that is going to give you all these free things. • The challenge to each and every one of us today is to “EARN
THIS!” (West referred to these words and their meaning from the movie, “Saving Private Ryan.” • We must continue to tell the stories of our fallen brothers and sisters, so everyone will know their sacrifice shall not be in vain. So we can have an America that does not look at a monument cross with 41 World War 1 soldiers’ names and want to tear it down because they think they have been offended. • We have to teach our young people to “Earn This,” because somewhere there is someone out there fighting for our freedom. They need to understand to earn that which others are doing. • Children need to hear about our history. Most kids today cannot tell you what the Constitution is about and most cannot tell you about the first 10 Amendments. • This is our moment! If we don’t pass these stories on to the generations, to generations, then all of the sudden, the sacrifices will be forgotten. • Being in the room with veterans is being in the midst of super heroes. Super heroes do not wear capes. Super heroes are the ones that leave their homes, their wives, their children to defend America. EARN THIS! • This is our moment. I will end this article with: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessing of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. “EARN THIS”

Encore Pitch: Hurlers Jones, Vaught have Hornets again in Region II-1A baseball final

Sweeping all three series, the Hornets have reached double digits in the last five of six total games, recorded four run-rule wins -- and outscored the opposition 66-9. However, how Dodd City’s pitching has performed has made the offensive outburst superflous -- and it’s almost all been by two staff members, junior Dillon Jones and sophomore Brayden Vaught. “I have six pitchers, but I never get past my two starters. My other pitchers don’t get much time,” said Dodd City manager Clint Lindsey, who this school year returned to his alma mater for his second stint at the helm. “I can’t say which is No. 1 and No. 2,” he said of Jones and Vaught. “Both are about even.” During the postseason, Jones, a three-year varsity member, has pitched each
series opener including two five-inning shutouts. In 17 innings, he has allowed a single run -- one of only two earned runs this postseason against the Hornets. Opponents have struck out 17 times against Jones, compared to getting 10 hits and two walks. “I know I have a great defense behind me,” said Jones, “and when [opponents] hit it, they will back me up and I will throw zeros. “I don’t throw hard,” he said. “I have a good twoseam [pitch] I throw anywhere close.” Meanwhile, Vaught, a second-year varsity member, has started each Game 2. “I try to get a rhythm going,” said Vaught, who has struck out 28 in 18 innings and allowed 13 hits, six walks and the other earned run. “I have a good off-speed pitch,” he said. “If coach calls it and if they struggle, I keep throwing it. ‘I have a great defense; I’m not afraid if I’m struggling to let [opponents] hit it -- and
know my team will back me.” Sophomore Landon Allen has also pitched a scoreless inning -- to close the regional quarterfinal sweep of Saint Jo -- for the Hornets, whose staff also includes junior Zayne Kennon, sophomore Kason Carson and sophomore Aaron Munger. The pitching prowess during the playoffs has come with a postseason and varsity newcomer behind the plate. “Gunnar Wilson has stepped in and done a tremendous job. By far, he is the most improved on the team,” said Lindsey. “He has the mentality of a natural athlete. “As a freshman, he does his job and knows his role. He doesn’t try to do too much,” he said. “His hitting is also starting to come on. “I don’t know if I could ask anyone to step up as he has.” Wilson has handled the position of catcher and the staff since senior Pate Wilkerson broke his collarbone three games into 12-2A play. “Some are more accurate.

You get to know each pitcher and how each mentally handles batters,” said Wilson, also a catcher during his Dixie League and junior high baseball days. “It’s been fun and an experience playing with these guys,” he said. “It’s the treat of it and I try to give all I can for them.” The dominance at plate and on the mound have earned Dodd City (18-5), the district runner-up to Merit Bland to qualify for the playoffs, a second-straight trip to the Region II-1A final round to continue Lindsey’s first year back home. “The kids have come out to play and made my job easier. [Assistant coach] Kevin Darwin and I have [just] put our own twist onto what they had,” said Lindsey. “They are such a great team. They do what we ask and have come along. “I told the team they are the most talented I’ve had to coach,” he said. “There’s not one [player] to single out; everyone does his own job and role. “Baseball has been my passion and what I’ve loved to do since I was growing up. I got a chance to come back here and jumped on it.” Note: In the Region II1A final, Dodd City faces a rematch with Abbott, which swept the two-game series last spring against the Hornets en route to the state semifinals after winning the 1A title in 2017. Dodd City will play Abbott on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Rockwall in the Region II-1A baseball final. A win will advance the Hornets to their first state tournament appearance since 2012.
Both softball teams reached the State advances with comparable records: 9-11 in 2017 vs. 9-8 now. Manager Dalton Herndon on May 22 also identified less trivial -- and more relevant -similarities. “They are the same type of kids,” said Herndon. “They have the same attitude and mindset. “Between volleyball and basketball,” he said, “they have been in big moments. “We were senior-heavy then and now we have one senior and a bunch of lowerclassmen who have taken ownership.” Dodd City came to practice that afternoon less than 24 hours after a 12-2 five-inning run-rule win in the Region II1A final at Kennedale over Gorman -- which had been previously undefeated and outscored its prior three postseason opponents 59-1 in three games. “It gives us a lot of confidence, knowing we can make plays,” said junior catcher Delaney Pilliod, who played

the playoffs ... we keep each other up and never give up.” “We knew most of the people we played in-season are [Class] 2As,” said senior center fielder Cassandra Woodlee, “so we learned from those losses and it made us better.” Pilliod and Woodlee join juniors McKenzee Jones and Camryn Hubbard as holdover members from the 2017 state semifinalist team. “As a freshman, I was scared out of my mind,” said PIlliod, “but as the years went on, I have became more of a leader and had more fun with more experience.” “It’s been really fun [this year],” said Dotson, “and good to know that I have good back up in the infield and outfield.” “It’s been great. I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” said Woodlee. “It’s a great gift for being a senior.” Note: State semifinals for Class 1A will be Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The 1A championship game will be Saturday, June 1, at 9 a.m.
