History, noun : Fort Lyday
Directions: From Ladonia, take FM 64 east 4 miles to FM 904; then north on FM 904 for 4 miles to right of way.
Marker Text: Early Texas Pioneer Isaac Lyday built a fort in this area soon after settling here in 1836. The compound, located 75 mi. E and .5 mi. N. of the old Lyday crossing on the North Sulphur River, consisted of living quarters, storerooms, and a large community well. Many local families gathered inside the Fort during Indian raids. Due to an increase in these raids, the area was almost abandoned by Anglo settlers until Texas Ranger Captain William B. Stout arrived in 1838 to organize a Ranger force. Lyday was elected captain of the Company and served until 1839. Fort Lyday continued to shelter settlers until the raids subsided ca. 1843, and the fort was eventually abandoned.
The new future executive director Amanda McDonald and Legal Advocate Lindsey Burke of The Fannin County Family Crisis Center were presented with 20 "baskets" filled with necessities, inspirational gifts and just plain fun. The baskets and all the items in them were donated from The Ladies Professional Networking Group of Fannin County. The idea sprang from wanting to give the Center something to brighten up the day of women and show them caring and support. Courtesy photo.

Historical Article - Savoy, Texas
The Holton RecorderTribute Newspaper , Holton, Kansas, June 10, 1880
Submitted by Betty Smith
The tiny village of Savoy, Fannin Co. Texas, on the Transcontinental Railroad was almost literally wiped away by a tornado on the night of the 28th of May, 1880. Nine
persons were killed and over sixty were injured, some ten or twelve of the latter having died within a few hours afterward. The village contained a population of about 400. The only buildings of any account left standing are the Houston Methodist Church and the Academy, the latter of which was transformed into a hospital for the wounded. Some nineteen business buildings, in-
cluding the Railroad Depot was almost totally demolished. The list of the killed is as follows: Dr. Joseph Kearns, William Sudduth, E. L. Andrews and child, Sam Gill, Ellie Gallagher, T. J. Cox, Miss Mattie Best, Miss Pantha Johnson. The more seriously wounded are Mrs. McKee, Edna, Robert and Sam McKee, Ema John, Ollord Horn, Mrs. Dr. Kearns, F. W. Foster, Prof. Holland's daughter, Hattie Johnson, Robert Johnson, Robert Gallagher

This classic recipe features tender, flavorful meatballs simmered in a rich and creamy gravy. An easy 30 minute dinner the whole family will love.
SWEDISH MEATBALLS SERVED with EGG NOODLES
For The Meatballs:
1 lb. ground beef
⅓ c. finely chopped onion
½ c. plain panko breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
¼ tsp black pepper
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. chopped fresh parsley For The Gravy:
3 Tbsp. all purpose flour
3 Tbsp. butter
3 c. beef broth
1 tsp. soy sauce
½ c. heavy cream
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. paprika
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1-2 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
12 oz. egg noodles, cooked according to package directions
In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion, panko breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, salt, garlic powder and 2 tsp. parsley until well combined. Roll the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs.
In a large skillet over mediumhigh heat, heat the olive oil. Cook the meatballs for 5-7 minutes, turning frequently, until browned on all sides. Transfer to a plate and set aside. In the same skillet, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute until until pasty. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, then add the soy sauce, heavy cream, salt, pepper, paprika and Worcestershire sauce. Bring
and wife, Mrs. William Sudduth, Mrs. Dennis Horn, Mrs. M. I. Taylor. A number of these have since died.
PS: Mr. and Mrs. William Sudduth are both buried at Sunnyside Cemetery. Don't understand how as the deed to the Cemetery says 1904. There is a saying in Savoy - " Twas in the year of 1880 on the 28th of May, that a tornado hit Savoy and blowed it all away."
Life is a dance. Don't sit it out.
and theatre camp the week of Aug 5-9. Art classes for kids of all ages are also available at the Center. Some classes are free and others have fees. A limited number of scholarships are available too. For more information, go to: https:// creativeartscenterbonham. org/classes/ or call (903) 6402196. The Center is located at 200 W 5th in Bonham and open Tuesday – Friday 10 am to 5 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to noon.
to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Return the meatballs to the gravy and gently stir to coat. Let simmer for 2-3 minhutes until heated through. Serve the meatballs and gravy over the cooked egg noodles. Garnish with chopped parsley.
Tip: Do not overmix the meatball mixture. Gently mix just until combined so they hold together. Over mixing develops gluten for dense, tough meatballs. Also, wet your hands before rolling and this prevents the meat from sticking to you. I also love this dish over cooked rice.
ENJOY!!!!

nin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at
9:00 a.m. the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with County Judge and all County Commis-
threats of legal harassment made to any county

Judge Cunningham then read Mr. Bergenholtz’s lengthy response before concluding by noting that laws and rules need to be applied equally across the board to everyone, without regard to person. Any interested in the entire content of the communications may go to the County Commissioners Court site that can be found on the County’s website.

After some discussion, a motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve with payment coming from Precinct 3. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Kopf and the motion passed.
15. Approve rental of Hitachi ZX60 Mini Excavator with a 48” ditch bucket from ASCO Rentals for one month; $3,309.04 from fund 210-621-4600 (Rentals/Leases) – Commissioner Precinct 1: Commissioner McQueen explained why this was needed in the clearing of ditches before making the motion to approve. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Kopf and the motion passed.
16. Approve hiring seasonal worker under the supervision of Fannin County’s Maintenance Facilities Coordinator to perform repairs to the Courthouse jury chairs and basement sloping and leveling – County Judge: After Judge Cunningham explained that the person previously approved of in the May 14th meeting to fill this need had not worked out, a motion was made by Commissioner McQueen to approve with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed.
OPEN DISCUSSION ITEMS:
Open discussion items will be passed on unless discussion requested by a member of the Court or a Citizen.
17. Subdivision Committee and Subdivision Policy –County Judge: Commissioner Self noted the next meeting would be held Thursday.
18. Courthouse repairs and litigation – County Judge: Judge Cunningham commented on the 202 hearing being held this Friday the 24th at the District Court located in the South Annex that will be open to the public and slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
19. Justice Center – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted the cost of the civil project should be available for public information soon.
20. County budget and revenue sources – County Judge: Commissioner McQueen reported on his findings, that after combing through various county financial records and comparing those records to the county’s investment report, that at the end of March 2024, there was over $11 million dollars that was not reported on in the investment report that is categorized as “cash on hand” as noted by the auditor’s office. He noted that in his working with the Treasurer and the Auditor, it was determined that a great deal of those funds can be moved to a TexPool account that is currently bringing in 5% interest on a yearly basis and could bring in an additional $40,000 a month interest. After giving examples of the different accounts involved, how much interest could be made by moving funds and the ease of moving money in and out of TexPool accounts, Commissioner McQueen concluded his report by noting that the “monthly investment
report from the treasurer’s office should reflect all county’s funds whether they earn interest or not and until that occurs, I will be voting not to accept the monthly treasurers report as it does not reflect the true position of the county.” In the discussion that ensued, Commissioner McQueen noted that two years ago, the interest rates were significantly lower and would not have brought in the interest funding that it would today. Judge Cunningham thanked Commissioner McQueen for finding “this acorn” and reiterated his stance that he doesn’t want taxes to go up but would rather “do more with less.”
21. Water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Commissioner Kopf discussed the city council meetings he had attended and the ones he has yet to attend.

COMMENTS AND ADJOURN:
27. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner McQueen thanked those who attended today’s court both in person and online before commenting on the road work delays that are sure to result in the next few days of high rain amounts.

vide good candidates for the vacated position and wished all a good week.
Commissioner Kopf agreed with the previous comments while noting his reluctance to be unwelcoming of rain (August is coming) and wished all a good week.
Judge Cunningham commented about a family member living in Houston, the severe weather that occurred there and how fortunate Fannin County has been thus far in not receiving extremely severe weather (“things can be worse, things can be better”). He then commented on the upcoming selection of a new County Clerk, noting the importance of the Court’s selection of the temporary replacement getting on the ballot for a chance of continuance after the election. He noted anyone interested in the position to contact him and Melanie Grammar to get their name reviewed by precinct chairs. He noted both parties (Republican and Democrat) will be able to place someone on the ballot and the significance that race will hold. He concluded by thanking everyone for their attendance and encouraging prayers for Israel and the Middle East before wishing God’s blessing on all. 28. Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 10:00 a.m.

Prayer, our Lifeline to God
Rev. Toby O. Byrd
“In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23–24, ESV)
It has been said that you can look where you will through the Bible or through the history of the church and you will find that a man of prayer is a man of spiritual power. It is not intellect or culture, social position, or money, or even prestige that makes a Christian an efficient witness and worker for Christ, instead, it is prayer, fervent, persistent prayer that seeks a conversation with God on behalf of oneself and others. But sadly, Christians do not pray enough. Many are negligent, slow, and lazy, neither offering prayer for themselves or for others, and by so doing they not only disregard God’s command to pray, but they starve their faith and rob the church of their contribution to help build the faith.
It’s amazing how we think we can navigate through life without God’s help, or worse yet, without calling on God for help. Life is a long hard struggle. Often life seems to mire us in deep waters or clinging mud. The harder we seek to move forward, the further behind we get. Life is likened to horses and vehicles; mired in deep puddles, constantly meeting resistance, hinderances of every kind, often stuck hard, with the result that there is little or no progress, and it seems
as if there is only endless trouble and labor. But regardless of these hurdles, despite how the present looks, Christianity will prevail for Christ promises that it will, saying to St. Peter, “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18, ESV)
“I will build My church.” These words of Jesus comfort us as we work in God’s kingdom endeavoring to increase His Church by making new disciples. Our efforts seem most daunting, even impossible, and they will be if we choose to rely solely on our skills, our labor, and our own fortitude. Something much more is needed. The answer lies in the Book of Acts and where we read what the disciples did after our Lord ascended into heaven. St. Luke tells us, “All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.” (Acts 1:14, ESV) The guidance and help servants of God need comes only from the Holy Spirit who will come to their aide through prayer. Prayer is a response to faith, a building block for the Church, and thanksgiving for the blessings God has poured out upon His Church through His beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus taught that we “ought always to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1, ESV) Furthermore, the Holy Spirit also taught that we should, “Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.” (Colossians 4:2, ESV) Furthermore, our Lord God answers prayer offered in His name, saying, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.” (John 16:23, ESV) Prayer is asking, it is a plea. It is speaking with God either by word of mouth or desire of heart. A plea to God offered from the heart is heard by Him as much as a prayer from the lips. True, earnest, and sincere prayer always comes from the heart; if not, it is not a godly prayer for it lacks sincerity and truth. Furthermore, when Jesus taught the apostles how to pray, He said, “Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” (Matthew 6:9, ESV) In Christ, God has become our Father, and we are His children. Since God the Father is our Creator and has the power to do whatever He desires, a prayer addressed to Him is never out of the realm of possibility, even if it seems impossible to us. The one who offers prayer to God doubting God’s ability to answer, offers an empty prayer. So, let your prayer be offered to Him who is the Almighty, the Father of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Prayer is our Lifeline to God. Thus, I urge you to use this precious gift often and with sincerity, knowing that for the sake of His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, God will hear and answer your prayer. In the name of Jesus. Amen May the peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Salvation In Jesus
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
What would the world be like without Jesus? There would be no real standard because everyone would have their own standard. There would be no salvation and no purposeful way to live life.
Luke records the words of Peter, concerning Jesus, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The angel told Joseph, before Jesus was born, that he was “call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). All must believe in Jesus as the Son of God. Christ said that “ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins” (John 8:24). Paul reminded Christians that they were “justified freely by his grace through the redemp-
tion that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24).
In salvation, Christ must be Lord. Jesus reminds us that “not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me, in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:21-23). Paul informs Christians that “God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:9). The church at Rome read these words from Paul, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth” (Romans 1:16).
Salvations in Jesus’ name is
not a slogan, or a ‘feel good’ phrase, but a way of life. The Lord said, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). It is a daily decision. Christ stated that we must “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” (Mark 12:30). Christians are to live “that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith” (Ephesians 3:17). Paul wrote that “servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ” (Ephesians 6:5).
When we have Jesus as Savior and Lord and when we live each day for Christ, then we can have “the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).
Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Freedom In Christ”
Hello everyone!
The Bible tells us in Galatians 5:1, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”
This passage of scripture focuses on what we, as Christians, so be doing with our freedom in Christ. First, we must guard it, especially against those who try to pressure us into following the ways of the world. The apostle Paul was sure that the Galatians would resist the one who was leading them down the wrong path. We are also warned not to waste
our freedom in Christ, and to not selfishly serve ourselves rather than serve each other in love. Those who trust in Jesus Christ are truly set free. Putting our faith and trust in Jesus Christ is the message of this classic hymn that was written by William T. Sleeper in 1887.
“Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come; Into thy freedom, gladness, and light, Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of my sickness into thy health, Out of my want and into thy wealth, Out of my sin and into thyself, Jesus, I come to thee.
“Earn This”
Calvary Baptist Church
Bonham, Texas
In the movie, Saving Private Ryan, several soldiers gave their lives to save Private Ryan, who was the last surviving sibling in his family. As the army captain, Captain Miller (portrayed by Tom Hanks), is dying on the bridge, he leans over to Private Ryan (portrayed by Matt Damon) and whispers in a dying gasp — “earn this.”
I must admit it took me a while to really understand the full magnitude of this request at his death. I have come to understand that it means that multiple lives were lost in an effort to find Private Ryan and to bring him home to his family. He means that Private
Ryan needed to honor his fallen comrades with a life of service toward others.
He also means “earn this” in a much broader sense. Freedom is not free. It comes at a very great cost and we must all be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to maintain our freedom
As a Christian, I derive from this that as a follower of Christ, I have a responsibility to live out the Gospel of Jesus in my community and that I must work toward influencing my culture to move back to our Christian roots as a nation.
Yours for True Revival,
Lyn and Lissa

Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. The lake is on the rise with water being released at the spillway. Anglers are reporting good catches of sand bass and catfish.
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 70 degrees; 4.07 feet above pool. White bass will be along the banks if the sad are spawning. Paddle tail swimbaits, and topwater lures are filling the box. If they are not up on the banks, check in 2035 feet of water on structure, slopes, rock, piles, or humps. Use 1 ounce or 2 ounce slabs in white or chartreuse with a jig tied about 18 inches above it for a double. Crappie are slow. Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 75 degrees; 3.22 feet above pool. Several of the boat ramps are closed due to high water. Sand bass and catfish are good with live or cut bait in 30-35 feet of water. Crappie are scattered in 15-25 feet of water with minnows. Report by Justin Wilson, Wilson Outdoor Connection. Tawakoni GREAT. Water lightly stained; 73 degrees; 0.80 feet above pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish great and is setting up on a solid summer pattern that should continue through most of the summer. The hybrid striper and white bass bite is very good. Big fish have been running humps and ledges in 15-25 feet. Live bait and swim baits are catching fish. The crappie bite is also good. Fish are solid in 8-14 feet on minnows and jigs near bridge pylons and brush piles. The largemouth bass bite is fair. Texoma GOOD. Water normal stain; 67 degrees; 2.82 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is excellent on live shad and topwaters. Anchoring on deep river ledges and flats in 60-80 feet of water fishing suspended around 40 feet catching quality and quantity on live shad. Top waters early along rocky banks where shad are still spawning. Catfishing is good using cut shad and prepared baits along the rocks in 20-40 feet of water. Free line dead shad or fish vertically along the rocks. Bass are fair using top waters early along the bluffs and on long points. Water temps in the mid 70s look for fish under docks and tires near marinas. Clear water is along the southern end of the lake. Crappie are fair using jigs fishing structure using electronics to locate active fish in 12-18 feet of water.

The district averaged rainfall up to 4 inches with torrential downpours reported in some areas. The rain created flood-
ing issues in areas that were saturated. A few hailstorms and heavy winds were also reported. Small grains were grazed out and hay fields looked good. There were reports of some fields of wheat,
oats, sorghum and corn damage due to flooding and hail. Crop lodging and soil saturation also caused corn crop stunting and chlorosis in some areas. There were a lot of dead pecan trees reported in both managed and native orchards. Cotton was in good condition in some areas, but plant conditions were dropping in areas with excessively wet fields. There were reports of algae issues in stock tanks. Livestock and cattle were in good condition, and some late spring cattle work was carried out.
East
The heavy rains continued across the district with ponds, creeks, lakes and rivers being full or overflowing. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were surplus. Pastures in most counties were too saturated to cut and bale hay. Producers in some areas began to use baleage since it does not have to cure. Producers were trying to harvest winter annuals to reduce the delay in warm-season perennials. Pasture and rangeland conditions were good, and cattle markets remained strong in most areas. Houston County reported lower prices

The district reported rain showers and storms, with most counties receiving up to 2 inches, and nighttime temperatures dropped into the low 60s. The topsoil and subsoil moisture were reported as adequate to surplus across most counties. There were some reports of trees being uprooted from the storms. Corn crops appeared to be behind due to excessive moisture. Blackberries and peaches were doing well and continued toward an excellent harvest while small farm vegetables were also above average due to the rainfall. Pasture and rangeland were reported from good to excellent conditions, with a few counties reporting fair to good. The warm season grasses were doing well. Ryegrass was seeded out and the first hay cutting will be made with drier conditions. Hay harvests were at a standstill, but silage was being baled in drier areas.
Rolling Plains
Some areas received multiple heavy rains, leaving limited access in low-lying areas until the ground dries to support heavy equipment. As the wheat harvest begins, farmers were gearing up to plant cotton. Soil moisture levels remained good going into the planting season. The rains and warming weather benefited spring and summer native pasture grasses as well, and few cattle were requiring any supplemental feeding.

Juan Russell Sewell, Sr., 87, of Bonham, TX saddled up one last time and rode off into the sunrise on the morning of May 19th, 2024.
The man, the myth, the legend was born in Whitesboro, TX on December 7th, 1936 to parents George Russell and Louise (Earnhart) Sewell, who named him after the famous romantic adventure film of the time, “Don Juan.” Juan had two brothers and one sister. His father farmed and worked in construction. His mother was a stenographer. The family made their homes in Whitesboro, Ravenna, and Bonham. Growing up in an exceedingly competitive household, young Juan learned how to rope, ride, and raise animals. He also learned how to sustain himself by “wheeling and dealing” at a very early age. At just eight years young, Juan would purchase one-week-old calves from The Woodmen Circle Home in Sherman, with money he had saved on his own. Juan recounted how the family would take the seat of their old Chevrolet sedan and set it up to load the calf in the back with the kids for a 30-mile, toe-smashing, ride home.
As a teen, Juan helped Haynes Kueckelhan build his first rodeo arena fashioned out of chickenwire with church pews brought in as the spectator seating. The young men worked on the original arena every day after school, as long as their chores at home were through. Juan graduated from Bonham High School in 1955. A few years later, meeting the love of his life, Glynell (Crelia), Juan was married to his soulmate on July 17, 1959. Thus, embarking upon a 64-year love story.
Early in the marriage, Juan joined the U.S. Army National Guard where he reached the rank of Seargent E-5, also competing in boxing as a Soldier-Athlete, serving from 1959 to 1965. Glynell stood by Juan through many out of state assignments, from as far as Louisiana to New Jersey, conversing with one another only through Telegram. Juan and Glynell had three children in whom he instilled lifelong lessons in hard work, perseverance, and the cowboy art of hanging on. Juan was the type of man that books, songs, and movies are written about, including the 1968 Billboard country music hit “Reno” made famous by American country music artist, Dottie West. Originally written by Glynell’s friend, “Chub” Allmond, about a raven-haired cowboy named Juan. In the 1970’s, Juan was a Class A Paramedic, and received his Horseshoeing Certificate from Grayson County College in 1975.
A Farrier by trade, Juan was known for his large, Grizzly bear-esque working hands. Those signature hands were good for settling debts, scratching grandbaby’s backs, and guiding a lifetime’s worth of horses. Juan had many high-profile clients, even shoeing Belgian Draught horses for the late actor, Patrick Swayze, at Flatiron Ranch. Juan continued to make acquaintance with numerous celebrities throughout his shoeing, rodeoing, and horseracing career days, that he would later call “friend.” Although he never pursued a degree in Veterinary Medicine, many folks in the community and surrounding areas entrusted Juan with the care and treatment of their animals, even more so than they did their own vet.
In 1985, Juan became a grandfather, more affectionately known as “Papa,” and wore that title proudly for nearly 39 years. Juan’s main life passion, however, was owning and training winning race horses. He possessed an indisputable understanding of equine behavior, fitness, and nutrition. He had a uniquely keen ability to assess a horse and adjust a training plan to produce a winner, time after time. His fabled mare, “Olympia Joes Babe,” secured the victory at The Yellow Rose of Texas race at Lubbock Downs in 1987. Sewell Ranch is where Juan preferred to spend most of his days; initially in Randolph, then later establishing their forever home in Bonham. Never truly hanging up his signature cowboy hat, Juan spent the later years staying on-his-toes owning bucking stock, and securing 1st Place at a barrel racing when he was 70 plus years old.
Juan Sewell was many things throughout his life, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a friend, and a businessman; but at his core, he was a cowboy. His piercing blue eyes beamed with wisdom, and a touch of mischief, earned by watching countless sunsets from atop a well-fed paint horse.
Whoever said “Nobody gets to be a cowboy forever,” never met Juan Sewell. He was as true a cowboy as there ever was, right up until his final days. Although his body and mind were no longer healthy as a horse, one thing he would always say was, “I’m still a cowboy.”
Happy Trails to you, Cowboy. Until we meet again.
Juan is preceded in death by his loving wife and best friend of 64 years, Glynell Sewell; his parents; brother Bob Sewell; sister Georgia Hayes Whitehurst; and grandson Dustan Sewell.
Juan is survived by his children, Juan Sewell Jr. (Cathy Moncier), Michele Sewell, and Delno (Amber) Sewell; his brother, Jerry Sewell; grandchildren, Courtney Sewell-Adams, Ava Jarratt, Blair Sewell, Tanner Sewell, Kylee Sewell, and Ryner Sewell; his great-grandchildren, Ridge Adams, Cambria Wright, Arielle Wright, Emory Wright, Paisley Wright, Chase Collinsworth; and a host of other family and friends.
Pallbearers: Tanner Sewell, Kevin Hayes, Kim Hayes, Jason Sewell, Jerry Wayne Sewell, and Fredy Chandler. Honorary Pallbearers: Blair Sewell and Allen Adams.
Family Night was held Thursday, 05/23/2024 from 6 to 8pm at Wise Valley Chapel in Bonham. Funeral Services were held Friday, 05/24/2024 at 12pm in the same location. Interment followed at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham.

Extra Effort Earns Extension: Bonham's Lindsey to continue tennis days at Jacksonville CC
By Rich Hilliard
BONHAM -- Warrior
Tennis Complex in Bonham served as the host site for almost a dozen tournaments throughout March and April.
School buses and parents' vehicles filled the westside parking lot and lined each side of Warpath Drive alongside the courts. But after school hours, another car parked on the court side of the street could often be found there -- when no events were occurring -- the last few years.
"As a coach we talk about putting in extra work," said Bonham head tennis coach Kirstin Bockman. "So when you put in extra, you get back ... "
That vehicle belongs to Jagger Lindsey.
tors, classmates and others in attendance.
That extra effort he put in there and elsewhere helped the Bonham senior find fruition.
Lindsey signed to extend his tennis career with Jacksonville College (about 30 miles south of Tyler, Texas) on May 15 in the Leonard A. Gerner Gymnasium inside Bonham High School, with family, friends, coaches, administra-
"I'm honored. I've wanted to play at the next level," said Lindsey. "I'm glad find a college close to home where I could play.
"Coach (Dylon) Neal [Jacksonville's head tennis coach] reached out to me after seeing a video I'd posted on the National College Scouting Association app," he said. "I did the research and saw they
were ranked.
"I wanted to be there."
Lindsey last spring played in the Class 3A State tennis quarterfinals in mixed doubles, paired by Bockman with 2023 Bonham graduate Alli Kirkpatrick. The lone-seasonpaired duo finished with an 18-2 record, advancing to State as the Region II-3A runner-up.
He also equated a regional alternate in 2022, while playing boys' doubles.
"We're super-excited for Jagger," said Bockman. "He's had a very successful career at Bonham. We are very proud of him.
"I want to thank his parents (Stephanie and Jody)," she said. "His mom constantly looked for extra opportunities for Jagger."
Note: Jagger Lindsey's career decision comes almost exactly 10 years after Bonham High School's Katie Barber extended her tennis days with Austin College in Sherman. Barber, who signed on on May 28, 2014, played throughout her undergraduate days.
a utility player also made the second team for Dodd City.
Honorable mentions included: Trenton's Kali Partridge; Honey Grove's Tori Brock; Dodd City's Sierra Garcia, Emma Garner; Ector's Adalynn Dederick, Aspen Harrison, Alyssa Mackey; and Sam Rayburn's Avery Amlin, Au-
bree Jones, Maddye Johnson, Bayleigh Vandeventer, Landreigh Chaffin. Academic all-district selections were Sam Rayburn's Avery Amlin, Aubree Jones, Abbi Keeton, Miley Keeton, Allie Parr, Dixie Chaffin, Amberlie Ivey and Brinlee Malone; Trenton's Emma Dudley, Kaylee Loving, Crystal Peña, Kali Partridge, Averianna Aviles, Jackie Gallegos, Estela Aguilar, Faith Williams, Addison Golightly and Gracie Williams; Honey Grove's Kiliegh Bateman, Sonora Flowers, Lily Ridley, Payton Norris, Maddy McKenzie, AnnaKate Thomas, Brailee Totty, Harley Childers, Gabby Finney, Serenity Canady, Lily Mahan,
Addison Weeks; Ector's Alyssa Mackey, Julia Bailey, Chloe Hardemon, Lydia Essary, Audrey Arie, Adalynn Dederick, Alana Mackey and Aleea Wheeler.
Note: Sam Rayburn returned to the postseason with a bidistrict trip, advancing as the district's fourth-and-final qualifier for the 2A playoffs. Ector equated a regional quarterfinalist, advancing as 15-2A's No. 2 seed to the 1A postseason.
Collier's Cross Country Contributions: Bonhi senior hopes to help Rockford University XC program too
By Rich Hilliard
BONHAM -- Consider Gavin Collier to be a helper. Whether intentional or not.
His one-time freshman miscue -- a missed turn at a church, longer than planned course run through town streets and later return to campus from a team workout -- actually bettered Bonham's cross country program.
His mistake contributed to the ensuing hiring of two assistants to help Kevin Trompler -- then the lone cross country coach for Bonham's boys and girls. The additional coaches allowed for ensuing better monitoring of all of the program's runners during their training.
"I owe him thanks," said Trompler while recounting the error. "He played a key role here in getting two assistants."
Conversely, the Bonham senior's intent to help influenced where he will continue his cross country career.
"I didn't want to go to a big college," said Collier. "I wanted to go where I could help them build their program."
He found that place at Rockford University in Illinois.
Collier agreed on May 16 to run for the Division III school -- where the school colors, coincidentally, are also purple and white -- in the Leonard A. Gerner Gymnasium inside Bonham High School, with family, friends, classmates, coaches, administrators and others in attendance.
"It was the culture there and it's a small team," said Collier.
"I knew I could help them improve.
"They reached out to me through e-mail," he said. "I texted (head) coach (Nathan) Freyling. We had a connec-
tion. I felt like he was my friend.
"I'm really excited. I've worked hard in high school for four years. I can't wait to work for four more in college."
Collier's efforts during four years of running cross country for Bonham High School have included twice qualifying for the Region II-3A Boys' Meet. His 12th place finish in 21:16.5 in 2021 helped the Purple Warriors win their first of back-to-back District 113A team championships. His 15th-place finish in 18:51.04 at district in 2023 came as Bonham advanced as the 11-3A boys' runner-up team.
"I have watched Gavin grow into the young man he is now and his contributions to our cross country and track teams," said Trompler. "He's been a permanent fixture in our locker room. It will be strange in August not to see him [there].
"We know he will do well up north," said the coach. "We'll ask his family to keep us updated.
"I think he will be a good fit at Rockford. His family will be wearing purple and white for a few more years."

portunities, aesthetic benefits, and sites for research and education. Without wetlands, water quality will decline, water supplies will be less reliable,
fish and bird populations will suffer, and floods will become more frequent and severe.
In North Texas, where water resources are precious and in high demand, developing, preserving, and restoring wetlands are vital for ensuring a sustainable future. By 2070, conservation and water reuse initiatives are expected to contribute around 30% of the region’s water supply. Water reuse involves capturing and treating
wastewater or stormwater for purposes such as drinking water, industrial use, groundwater replenishment, and watershed restoration. This approach complements traditional water sources and promotes long-term sustainability.
Manmade wetlands offer similar benefits as their naturally occurring counterparts and are a cost-effective solution for water reuse and quality improvement. The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) actively participates in creating manmade wetlands, such as the 2,000-acre East Fork Water Reuse Project, one of the largest in the U.S. This wetland acts as a large-scale water recycling project, filtering reused water naturally before it is reintegrated and stored for future treatment and use by NTMWD.
Located within NTMWD’s East Fork wetland project, the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center is a public-private partnership between the NTMWD and The Rosewood Corporation. Although the primary function of these wetlands are water reuse and supply, the JBSWC further leverages the benefits of the wetlands by providing educational programs, research opportunities, and awareness initiatives related to water reuse and supply, wetland systems, and wildlife conservation. The commitment of both organizations to conserving and restoring wetlands in North Texas has garnered prestigious accolades, including the Texas Leopold Conservation Award that recognizes and celebrates extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation. Developing, preserving and restoring wetlands is essential for North Texas. Wetlands provide unique benefits, including natural and cost-effective solutions for water purification and reuse, flood protection, recreational opportunities, and wildlife habitat. NTMWD recognizes the value of these natural systems and leverages their benefits by constructing wetlands for water supply purposes. By valuing these natural resources, we safeguard our environment, improve water quality, and create a legacy for future generations.
