This recipe is tasty and a healthy salad that is perfect for a lunch on a hot summer day.
SHRIMP AVOCADO
CORN SALAD with SUMMER VINAIGRETTE
8 oz. raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 large avocado, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and sliced
1 c. cherry or grape tomatoes, halved
1 c. fresh corn kernels
½ red onion, minced
freshly chopped cilantro
2 Tbsp. butter, melted + 1 Tbsp. butter at room temperature
1 Tbsp. lime juice
1 Tbsp. olive oil
½ tsp. salt and fresh cracked black pepper
To make the shrimp avocado corn salad: Melt 1 Tbsp. butter in a skillet over mediumhigh heat. Toast corn, stirring regularly for a couple of minutes until slightly charred and set aside. Toss shrimp with 2 Tbsp. melted butter in a bowl until well-coated. Add shrimp to the same skillet in a single layer, searing for a minute or until it starts to become pink around the edges, then flip and cook until shrimp are cooked through, less than a minute. Transfer shrimp to a shallow plate and allow to cool while you prepare the other ingredients for the salad. Add all ingredients for the salad to a large mixing bowl. Combine olive oil, lime juice, salt and pepper and drizzle over the salad and toss everything together. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper. Serve this salad immediately. Make sure to toss in the avocado right before serving so it doesn't turn brown. Also don't over stir so that the avocados stay firm.
Hope you will give this one a try.
ENJOY!!

Hornets in fifth-straight regional baseball final
By Rich Hilliard
Dodd City played Abbott in a Region II-1A baseball best-ofthree series rematch at Royse City. Abbott won, 11-4, on Wednesday, to open the series. Game 2 occurred Saturday, with Game 3, if necessary, following. The Hornets have now reached at least the Region II-1A final in five-consecutive baseball postseasons.
In a regional semifinal rematch, Dodd City swept Ector at Bonham, 7-2, 14-6, on May 18. Abbott swept Graford, 13-3, 10-8.
Rodriguez's Route To Realization: DC senior takes different path to extending cheer career into college
By Rich Hilliard
DODD CITY -- Brianna Rodriguez changed high schools midway through her junior year.
But the Dodd City senior didn't change what she still wanted to do after graduation: cheer.
Studio94 gymnastics center in Bonham and former cheerleader at Bonham High School, Tyler Junior College and NCAA DivisionI Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

An Unexpected State: 1A Lady Hornets return to Austin after starting s'ball season w/position changes
we were going to have a down year, but some freshman have stepped up."
"This year, we started off slowly," agreed Dodd City manager Chad Crossland. "We had to move people into positions they hadn't played. It took a while ..."
Those changes for the veterans have included: junior Hannah Burney, previously a third baseman when not pitching, as a first-time shortstop when out of the circle; senior Lindsey Skipper at first base; and junior Addyson Chaney, moving from playing third and second base, respectively, her freshman and sophomore seasons -- to catcher.
"It's definitely a major change, but I knew I had to do it for the team for us to be successful," said Chaney, whose move there mirrored that made in 2022 by former teammate and graduate Kylee Graves.
"I gave it a try," she said. "It's not that bad."
With a somewhat repositioned team, in the field, the Lady Hornets, a State semifinalist in 2022 after a loss to eventual champion D'Hanis, again advanced as District 15-2A's top seed to the 1A playoffs. Dodd City finished 5-7 in 15-2A, going 3-3 in the second half with wins over Tom Bean and Honey Grove, two of the district's 2A postseason qualifiers.
"We play in a tough district with well-coached 2A teams," said Crossland. "That made us ready.
"I told the girls," he said, "we had to be hitting our stride in the playoffs."
That's happened.
Despite her unorthodox route, she has found fruition.
Rodriguez announced on May 22 that she will cheer at Tyler Junior College, in a signing ceremony held in the Dodd City ISD west gymnasium, with family, friends, classmates, teachers and coaches present.
"It's definitely been a challenge," said Rodriguez. "I knew I had to work for it to get to the next level. I had to do things -- go to clinics, practice crazy hours -- but I did it."
Dodd City ISD does not currently offer cheer as part of its athletics program.
To maintain her cheer skills
-- and add others necessary to continue into the highly-competitive world of college cheer, such as tumbling -- Rodriguez worked after school with Kathleen Brooks, owner of the
"I've never seen an athlete work her tail off like Brianna," said Brooks, of Rodriguez, also an all-State setter last fall in volleyball as well as a basketball, softball and track competitor for Dodd City. "She is the definition of an allaround athlete."
"I've known Brianna since she was little," said Bonham High School cheer coach Stacy Hunnicutt. "I had her on varsity cheer for three years at Bonham before she moved to Dodd City ... "She worked hard to keep up her skills," said Hunnicutt. "Hard work pays off."
Shades of Several Seasons Ago: Trenton s'ball region final trip in '23 comparable to '16 same-round run
By Rich Hilliard
TRENTON -- A
sign outside its home softball field reminds just how successful Trenton has been in the sport since 2013.
By Rich Hilliard
DODD CITY -- Being back at State in softball wouldn't surprise many with regard to Class 1A Dodd City.
With this season's advance, the Lady Hornets have now reached the season-ending event during five of the last six completed softball seasons -- winning a State title in 2021. However, finishing this season in Austin again hasn't always been a given.
"We had a rough start this year," said Lindsey Mauppin, senior starting pitcher and shortstop and East Central softball and cross country signee.
"We are kind of unexpected this year," said Mauppin. "We thought
Having a bi-district bye, the Lady Hornets defeated Avalon, 10-0, in six innings in the regional quarterfinals and swept their regional semifinal best-of-three series against Abbott, 10-3, 18-1.
Appropriately, only Blum -- in the Region II-1A final -- gave Dodd City a test, before falling, 6-3 -- and assuring the Lady Hornets of what has become a yearly ending to softball season at the school.
"It's really exciting," said Mauppin.
"I'm so thankful for all of the teams."
Note: The Class 1A State semifinals will be Tuesday, May 30, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin. The 1A State championship game will also be there on Wednesday, May 31, at 4 p.m.
It notes yearly postseason advances -- how there have been no misses -- and district titles won. Comparisons to one listed year and team in particular -- the 2016 Lady Tigers -- can't help but be made, considering just how similarly successful the 2023 squad has been.
"This year is one of our two best in (softball) program history," said Jeremy Strickland, Trenton superintendent and softball manager, on May 22 of his 29-1-1 team.
"They'll have the best record in our history, but the 2016 team -- they ran into opponents in non-district from (Class) 4A and up that really tested them that we didn't get this season.
"There are a lot of similarities to 2016: the way this group has come together, fights and the way they en-
joy representing their community."
Trenton ended this month having done at least what that group did in successive seasons in terms of rounds advanced -- reach the regional final -- and again faced Crawford, the 2022 State champion of 2A, on May 27. at Waxahachie High School.
"It feels amazing," said senior shortstop Mariana Caro, a Harding University (Ark.) softball signee. "It's an honor to follow in their footsteps and write our own legacy. It's a good feeling."
"My four years have been great, but this year is differ-
ent," said senior right fielder Ashley Alexander. "There is better team chemistry."
"I love helping out my team. These girls mean a lot to me," said sophomore second baseman Emma Dudley. "I don't want to quit playing with them. I want to go as far as possible."
The only two teams, through May 22, to blemish the Lady Tigers' record also continued having practices during the last full week of the month. Como-Pickton, which gave Trenton its only loss on Feb. 23, and Whitesboro, which on March 3 accounted for the tie, also earned trips, respectively,
to the Region III-2A and Region II-3A finals.
Though 15-2A play afterward most often included one-sided victories en route to winning an undefeated district title, Strickland credited those district rivals for the Lady Tigers' postseason readiness.
"Our district, to have some of the teams we had to go through," said Strickland, "did a great job with pitching and preparing us for the playoffs. "Our playoffs path, to go against Valley Mills and Riesel wasn't easy. Both are in Crawford's district," he said regarding Trenton's series sweeps of Valley Mills in the area round, 6-4 and 8-3, and Riesel, in the regional quarterfinals, 5-2 and 9-2.
"It gives us a window into seeing how we match up with Crawford."
Note: The Class 2A State Tournament semifinals will occur on May 30 at 4 or 7 p.m. at the Red & Charline McCombs Field in Austin. The championship game will follow there on May 31 at 7 p.m.

DODD CITY, TEXAS 150 YEARS
SEPT 8 1873 – 2023
DODD CITY CEMETERY
The first land (Sec A Rows 1-17) for the cemetery was donated by Edmund and Elizabeth Dodd for their 5-monthold daughter, Frances Jane, who was the first known burial on Nov. 7, 1842. This land was used by the Dodd family and then by many other folks in nearby communities such as, Lick / Doddsville / Dodd, Quincey, Shade Grove, etc. It was not long until it was more than a family plot. On Sept 8, 1873 Edmund and Elizabeth Dodd donated the land about two miles to the west of the cemetery for the new railroad town of Dodd City. Soon after this the cemetery became known as the DODD CITY CEMETERY.
In the early years (1840s -1890s) before a caretakeer was hired to care for the cemetery the family members worked to keep their family plots clean. Sometime before Edmund Dodd’s death in 1902 control of the cemetery had fell to the Smyrna/Dodd City Masonic Lodge #407 which was established in 1891. Per Ruby Spelce Holleman (1904-1998) in a personal interview by the authors on March 17, 1997. Per Ruby, her grandfather, Jim was hired as the caretaker for many years. Most likely paid by the Masonic Lodge. She also stated that in the late 1890s her grandfather, James L. "Jim" Spelce (1850-1911) and his wife Mattie (McDowell) Spelce donated land for the west portion of section A (Sec A Rows 18-33). The cemetery has been added onto several times since 1842. In 1936 Dr.
6th in a series By Andy & Sherri Weeks
JM Donaldson donated land for section B and in 1958 he donated land for section C. In 1960
Harte Padgett, Jr donated land for section D and in 2012 Frank Swartz traded lots for land that will become section E.
According to ads, annual allday cleaning took place with a lunch and dinner served on the grounds. This was organized by a “Committee” maybe through the Masonic Lodge, concerned citizens or community leaders.
On March 2, 1949, the town organized the Dodd City Cemetery Association: President-Mrs. S.P. Shellie Mills, Treasurer-Mrs. W.C. McGee, Secretary-Charles Rayburn. They selected a five man committee to hire a caretaker: Collie Bridges, Pete Berryhill, Fred Hammer, GomerFry and Floyd Lowery. They hired Mr. Claude Wommack.
Ruby Holleman remembers the first meeting and CleanUp Day that Shellie Mills’ letter refers to (see link below):
“Everyone would bring a cover dish and they would clean their family’s graves first then help others with the rest of the cemetery. We would eat lunch at noon, there was always lots of good food! We had a good time, but it was hard work. The place was a mess!” The first workday of the newly formed association was postponed to March 11, 1949 because of weather per ad.
Over the past 181 years hundreds of GREAT FOLKS have served this cemetery. We owe a debt to them and owe a huge THANK YOU to the many who still give of their time and money to keep the cemetery looking great. As of May 2023 there are 2360 known burials in
this cemetery. If you have any family or friends buried here, please do your part to keep the cemetery looking great. The current board members are: Dale Horton, Cindy Ferguson, Debra Granstaff, Shawn Rencher, Roybn Dockery, Teffany Kavanaugh and Lyndell Vaught.

Ribbon Cutting Celebrates New Leonard Water Treatment Plant
growth of North Texas underscores the need for additional water supplies and associated treatment facilities to prepare for the future. This is NMTWD’s seventh water treatment plant, and it joins the other facilities in the District’s regional system that are critical to meet the needs of North Texans today, plus the estimated 55,000+ people moving to NTMWD’s service area each year.
New plant is treating water from Bois d’Arc Lake for the NTMWD service area
Fannin County, TX (May
19) -- The North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) officially celebrated the commissioning of the Leonard Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Fannin County, TX, with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The facility treats water from the recently completed Bois d’Arc Lake, the state’s newest major reservoir in over thirty years, located 35 miles northeast in
the same county.
NTMWD owns and operates the plant on a 1,000-acre tract just west of Leonard, TX. Treatment of Bois d’Arc Lake water began in March and undergoes a rigorous, multistep process including state-of-theart ozone and biological filtration technology. Six massive pumps help convey the treated water to the District’s transmission system through a connection point in McKinney, TX. The plant will initially treat up to 70 million gallons of water per day (MGD) and is master planned for future expansions of up to 280 million gallons per day. The design of Phase 2 is underway, with expected completion in 2028 for an additional 70 MGD.
The event was attended by the NTMWD Board of Directors, key staff, and contractors vital to the plant’s planning,
permitting, and construction. Guests gathered at the Leonard WTP Operations Center to commemorate the plant’s completion and hear remarks from NTMWD Executive Director and General Manager Jenna Covington, NTMWD Board President Jack May, along with representatives of several contractors directly involved in the plant’s construction. A ceremonial ribbon cutting concluded the presentation, and visitors were invited to tour the plant and fill up a commemorative glass of treated Bois d’Arc Lake water on tap.
“The construction of this plant took many years and hundreds of people,” said Covington. “We are grateful for their hard work and dedication to making this plant a reality so it can serve future generations of North Texans.”
The continued surge in
“This plant is integral to providing treated water to the regional system, delivering the highest water quality possible for the communities we serve,” said Adam Baugh, Leonard WTP Supervisor. “Our team has been training and testing the plant for months before delivering water to North Texans, and we couldn’t be prouder to be fully operational.”
Baugh and an initial team of 15 operators are tasked with keeping all aspects of the plant functioning effectively and efficiently. Like all NTMWD’s water treatment plants, the Leonard WTP is staffed 24/7/365.
“Successful operations at the Leonard Water Treatment Plant is another major milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide water supplies to those we serve,” continued Covington. “We remain committed to responsible stewardship of our shared resources and vigilant in our responsibility to protect public health and the environment in North Texas.”

Risky Games at Sea!
When we were 16, our parents got jobs to teach school in Germany to children of American soldiers. Our father went first and my twin brother and two younger sisters came with mother. It was a small ship that took 17 days to cross. My brother and I were bored until we hit a small storm. A spray of water made the deck slick.
The sides of the ship rolled up and down. No one knew we were having fun taking turns sliding about 50 feet from one side to the other. After an hour, the shop rolled on an extra big wave. I pushed off and hit the other railing going so fast I flipped over. I was bent at my waist gripping the bottom railing. My knees and feet were the only part that didn't go over. Those were the longest seconds of my life. When the ship rolled the other way, I was able to stand. That ended the fun, and we never told anyone. Paid for by Rex Ray

Soil and Water Conservation Week Declared
focus this year is “One Water.” Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes, covering every inch of the Earth. A watershed is an area of and that channels rainfall and snowmelt to creeks, streams, and rivers, eventually leading to outflow points such as reservoirs, bays, and oceans. Those bodies of water are all connected, so every drop that falls on Earth becomes a part of One Water.

great state is part of a watershed, which means we all live in a watershed. We are all a part of One Water. Of all the water used in Texas, roughly 40 percent is drawn from surface water sources and 60 percent from groundwater sources. We share the water in our watershed with our neighbors, livestock, wildlife, forests, and cropland, as it is all One Water.
Bonham – Fannin SWCD has partnered with the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) and the Association of Texas Soil & Water Conservation
Districts to highlight Soil and Water Stewardship Week and the importance of voluntary land stewardship in Texas. The statewide campaign is April 30 through May 7, 2023, and the
At 268,597 square miles, Texas is the second largest state in the nation. Within Texas’ massive acreage, there are approximately 191,228 miles of streams and rivers, more than 8 million acres of inland and coastal wetlands, and more than 3 million acres of reservoirs and lakes. Every inch of land that makes up our
By 2070, the population of Texas is expected to nearly double, with the demand for water increasing by 17 percent. The supply of water from existing sources in Texas will be 11 percent smaller than it is today. If we do nothing, approximately four out of five Texans will face a water shortage in their cities and residences. There is no natural resource with greater significance for the future of Texans than One
Since 1939, the TSSWCB and Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) across Texas have been working to encourage the wise and productive use of natural resources. It is our goal to ensure the availability of those resources for future generations, so that the needs of all Texans can be met in a manner that promotes a clean, healthy environment and strong economic growth. Your local SWCD can work with you to develop a conservation plan for your farm or ranch to improve water quality and quantity while providing resources on responsible natural resource management. These voluntary plans can be tailored to meet the conservation needs and goals of each individual landowner.
TSSWCB, SWCDs and our conservation partners are com-
mitted to working with farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners to conserve and protect the natural resources of Texas. As the population of the state continues to grow, maintaining the productivity of our soil and water resources becomes increasingly vital in meeting the food, fiber, and water needs for all Texans. We must do our part to protect One Water. This campaign aims to bring more awareness and support to voluntary land stewardship because the way we manage our resources on private lands directly impacts our natural resources. SWCD NAME is proud to collaborate with conservation partners across Texas to promote the importance of natural resource conservation. Prayer for Fannin County
Central Living Noble Lives
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
Luke refers to Bereans as “more noble” “in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). Jesus invited the Jews to “search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me” (John 5:39).
Paul commands us to “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
Besides a daily search of scriptures, being ‘noble’ consists of receiving the Word of God. Paul wrote, “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when

ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). We must receive the Word of God even when it is not popular, even when we are afflicted for it. Paul reminds the Christians in Thessalonica that they “became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction” (1 Thessalonians 1:6)
To be ‘noble’ we must not only receive the Word of God, but we must obey it. We read of Jesus, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of
Fannin County
eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:89). On the day of Pentecost “they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls” (Acts 2:41).
In obeying the Lord, we are to live exemplary lives. Titus received this message “In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works” (Titus 2:7). Timothy was told to “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12). Again, we are reminded to “Abstain from all appearance of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Let us choose to be NOBLE!
Discipline: Train Yourself to be Godly
by Wil Pounds
What will it take in the Christian’s life to overcome broken resolutions and commitments?
It will be a great benefit to realize that there is no such thing as instant godliness. There are no “one minute,” thirty days, or “three easy steps” to a life of righteousness that pleases God. That is not the way God planned for our sanctification.
We are justified instantly by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. But justification and sanctification are completely different.
We have spent a life time developing patterns of sinful attitudes, thinking and behaviors. These habits will not be broken and replaced with godly behavior and thinking without commitment and discipline.
The apostle Paul uses an athletic image to tell us we must discipline ourselves to live godly. “Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7). Why is it so important? The next verse tells us “it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” It has immediate pay offs in this life, and eternal rewards.
Discipline is that determined effort on our part that corrects, molds and perfects the character of a person. Holy character does not come all at once, but over a lifetime.
This “discipline” is the training that is needed for the unhindered pursuit of God’s will and purposes.
Discipline puts into daily practice our commitment to live a godly life. It begins in the mind. “Be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
This inner transformation takes place as we memorize, meditate, and put into daily practice the precious truths of the Bible.
Old sinful habits and
patterns of behavior and thinking are changed as we form new habits of obedience to the will of God. As we put these new attitudes and behaviors into practice over a period of time we form new patterns of thinking and behavior. It then becomes easier and easier to live a life that is pleasing to God. We are responsible to put into action a plan for daily Bible reading, study, prayer, etc. The Holy Spirit can then apply to our inner person the Scriptures we have learned. I cease to be amazed how He brings to my mind in time of need passages of Scripture or principles I have learned in the past. He gives us inner strength as He applies His Word to our daily life. We have to do our part by disciplining ourselves to study and meditate on the Word of God. If you will not discipline yourself to get into God’s Word you will not grow in Christ-likeness. No one else can do that for you.
Just as physical exercise is good for the body, the apostle Paul tells us our mind, emotions, will and spiritual life needs vigorous exercise as well. Just as the Greek athlete would discipline himself with vigorous exercise in order to win the athletic games, we are exhorted to exercise in such as way as to excel in godliness.
M. R. Vincent notes,
“Godliness has promise for the present life because it has promise of the life which is to come. Only the life which is in Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 1:1) is life indeed (1 Tim. 6:19).”
Are you training yourself toward the goal of true godliness? “The reason why we toil and struggle so hard is that we have set our hopes on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe” (1 Timothy 4:10). That is what makes the effort on our part so worthwhile.
As we have stressed before, we live a life of obedience as we yield to the presence of the Holy Spirit. We must daily know Jesus Christ better if we are to grow in Christ-likeness. To know Him better we must feed our minds and nourish our faith in Him.
Are you training your soul in holiness? Are you in a determined pursuit of godliness in your own life?

CHARLES AUSTIN JONES
Charles Austin Jones passed away peacefully from this life at his home on May 21, 2023 at the age of 90 years and 23 days. He was surrounded by his family throughout this last chapter of life. Austin was born April 28, 1933 to Charlie and Hope Jones somewhere north of Savoy. He was the second of six children. Austin was raised west of Ravenna on his family’s farm. He was a graduate of Savoy High School and a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean War. On June 23, 1956 he married Velma Cain and about a year later they bought their place on the Red River where he remained until his passing. Together they raised two daughters on their place. Austin spent his life working hard. He was the type of man to work from sun up to sun down. He had several public jobs such as a truck driver, working for DeRose Industries, and Southwest Pump, but his main job was taking care of his place. He was a cowboy in every sense of the word. He never wore anything but cowboy boots, a hat and blue jeans. He had many horses throughout his life and he also rode and broke horses for the public. He was a cattleman and believed you worked your cows horseback. The crack of the bullwhip still lingers. Austin was a self-taught farrier and had the little ‘red’ book to prove it.
Austin was a meticulous person, loved the color red, drove red trucks, and enjoyed listening to Elvis. A good western with Clint Eastwood or the Price Is Right were about his limit on TV. Lastly, Austin was a man of few words, but when he spoke, most people listened.
Austin is survived by his wife of nearly 67 years, Velma, two daughters and their families: Kathy and Kenny and their family… John-Austin, Seanna, Peyton & Paisley, Kaylee, and Morgan; Karol and James and their family... Kortni, Damon, Dylan & Halle, Audra, Katie, Clay, Harper & Wade; siblings, Darlene (Joe) and Phil (Judy) and several nieces and nephews.
Austin is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Hope; three sisters, Clarice, Earle, and Jerry; one grandson, Rod, and all of his Cain in-laws.

Proposed Changes to Recreation Fees Identified by the National Forests in Texas
LUFKIN, Texas, May 26, 2023
“We recognize how important these sites are to our local communities and those who use the sites. These fee increases will help us maintain the sites to the level and quality people have come to expect and make the fees more consistent throughout the state,” said Jeff Stoney, District Ranger for the Caddo LBJ National Grasslands.
“During this public input period, we want to hear strategies and other ideas to help cut costs and leverage resources.”
The forest proposed last year to increase the annual pass from $30-$40 and is still waiting for a citizen’s advisory committee. Passes are valid for one year from the date of purchase and honored at the day-use sites on the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas, Kisatchie National Forest, and Corp of Engineer Dayuse sites at Sam Rayburn and Town Bluff Reservoirs. Pass holders of the Interagency Senior and Access Passes will continue to receive a 50% discount on the annual day-use pass.
The proposed fee is listed below.
Caddo-LBJ National Grasslands
Site Name Site Type Current Fees Proposed Fees EAST LAKE DAVY CROCKETT BOATING
In 2004, Congress passed the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (REA) which allows the Forest Service to retain funds collected at certain recreation sites and use these funds locally to operate, maintain, and improve these sites. These additional funds, along with ninety-five At least eighty percent of the revenue from recreation fees remain on the forests to operate, maintain and improve facilities. Raising the revenue collected through recreation fees would help the forests improve infrastructure at campsites and day-use sites and hire additional recreation staff during the season of operation. The resource derived through collection of fees helps provide quality recreation opportunities that meet the modern expectations of visitors and creates a more financial sustainable developed recreation program for the benefit of future generations.
Under REA, all new fees and any fee changes must be proposed and approved by a citizen’s advisory committee. Committee members represent a broad array of recreation interest groups to help ensure that the Forest Service is proposing reasonable and publicly acceptable new fees and fee changes.

Tips for Avoiding Bug Bites This Summer
(StatePoint) Bug bites are not just a nuisance, they can cause discomfort and even pose health risks for some.
“Mosquitoes that may carry Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue fever and West Nile virus are always out in full force during the summer months and new evidence suggests that tick populations are growing, expanding their geographic ranges and carrying additional pathogens,” says Daniel Perry, entomologist at Zevo, a maker of pest control products that are made to bother bugs, not people.
From beach barbecues to walks in the woods, here’s how to safeguard yourself against ticks and mosquitoes, so you can stay bug-free this summer for whatever takes you outside.
• Beat backyard bugs: Eliminate standing water to prevent mosquitoes from using your backyard as a breeding ground in areas where you entertain and dine. Keeping your lawn and weeds in check is a useful step for managing ticks.
• Take safer walks: Whether you’re picnicking in the park, walking the dog, working in
the garden or hiking in the woods, it’s important to be mindful of ticks, which can transmit Lyme and other diseases. When possible, avoid contact with tall grass and brush, which is where ticks reside. Always be sure to launder your outdoor gear shortly after use. Take a shower soon after getting home, being sure to inspect your body (and your dog’s!) for ticks. If you do spot a tick, follow proper protocol for removal, using clean tweezers and removing fully, without squeezing or twisting the tick.
• Protect your skin: “No matter what your outdoor plans entail, bug spray products applied beforehand are your best bet for complete protection against mosquitoes and ticks, and of course, the diseases they harbor and transmit,” says Perry. The new line-up of Zevo On-Body Mosquito + Tick Repellents are odorless and non-greasy, unlike traditional insect repellents, and provide complete, feel-good protection for the entire family for up to 8 hours. Whether you’re at a
Foot and Ankle Safety Tips for the Summer Months
(StatePoint) From the beach to the backyard, taking care of your feet and ankles in summer is essential.
“Nothing ruins summer fun faster than a problem with your feet. However, a few smart precautions can help keep you healthy and safe,” says Gretchen Lawrence, DPM, AACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and an associate member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).
To help you understand some of the most common summer risks to feet and how to avoid them, ACFAS is sharing these insights:
• Puncture wounds: Millions of Americans go barefoot every summer, and thousands will sustain cuts and puncture wounds. To prevent injury and infection, wear shoes whenever possible and get vaccinated against tetanus. If you do get a puncture wound, see a foot and ankle surgeon within 24 hours and don’t swim until it’s healed. Bacteria in oceans and lakes can cause infection.
• Pool problems: Always wear flip flops or other footwear in locker rooms and on pool decks to prevent contact with bacteria and viruses that can cause athlete’s foot, plantar warts and other problems.
• Sun damage and skin cancer: Don’t overlook your feet during your sun protection routine. Feet get sunburned too, and melanoma on the foot or ankle is more likely to be misdiagnosed than on any other part of the body. A study published in “The Journal of Foot & Ankle Surgery” reported the overall survival rate for melanoma of the foot or ankle is just 52%, in sharp contrast to the 85% survival rate for melanomas on other areas of the body. Apply sunscreen to the tops and bottoms of feet and limit sun exposure. Dr. Lawrence notes, “If you spot abnormal moles or pigmented skin, including under toenails, visit a foot and ankle surgeon. Early detection and treatment could save your life.”
• Pains and sprains: Summer sports can lead to arch pain, heel pain, ankle sprains and other injuries. Proper footwear with heel cushioning and
garden-style wedding or hiking a mountain trail, you can be comfortable and protected from bugs with this innovative formula. The active ingredient in these products is inspired from a naturally-occurring amino acid and doesn’t leave your skin feeling sticky, which is a big bonus when you’re spending all day outside or even just 30 minutes! It’s available as an aerosol spray, a pump spray, and a lotion, which allows for easy, messfree application before you go outside.
• Camp smart: Before departing for a camping trip, check your tent for small holes and repair or replace as needed. Select a campsite away from standing water, and zip up your tent whenever you’re not actively entering or exiting it. These measures will help you feel comfortable and protected from bugs on your next trip. Don’t let the bugs bug you this summer. From sporting events to evenings on the patio, a few precautions can help ensure your comfort and protection from those pesky pests.

arch support is essential, particularly on uneven surfaces, such as sandy beaches or hiking trails. If injury occurs, use the RICE approach: rest, ice, compression and elevation to ease pain and swelling. Any injury that doesn’t resolve within a few days should be examined by a foot and ankle surgeon.
• Mower risks: Some 25,000 Americans sustain injuries from power mowers annually, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission. Many of these injuries are preventable. Always cut the grass in protective shoes or work boots and keep children away during this chore. Never mow a wet lawn or pull the mower backward, and always mow across slopes, not up or down them.
• Travel concerns: Sitting for long stretches can increase the risk of dangerous blood clots. “Whether road tripping or flying, regularly stretch your legs and pump your feet to circulate blood. Wearing compression socks for longer travel is also a good idea,” says Dr. Lawrence.
• Diabetes complications: If you have diabetes, prolonged hot and humid weather can lead to numerous foot woes. Any type of skin break has the potential to get infected if it isn’t noticed right away, and exposure can cause dry, cracking skin. Inspect your feet daily and wear closed shoes whenever possible. Swelling is another hot-weather risk, potentially making shoes fit tighter which can cause blisters. Compression stockings may not sound appealing in hot temperatures, but they can reduce swelling and help prevent poor circulation. Finally, never go barefoot in summer. Impaired nerve sensation can make it hard to detect just how hot surfaces are. Just a few minutes walking barefoot on pavement to grab the newspaper can cause third-degree burns.
