year. The date of appraisal, as required by law, is January 1, 2021, meaning the trends and market forces leading up to and existing at that time were used to establish the values for 2021. We have included a letter which outlines the process we will follow for this upcoming protest season. As with last year, impromptu walkin or call-in conversations with an appraiser will not be available this year. Property owners with a dispute will need to first file a protest and indicate the nature of their dispute. This action secures your right to a hearing before the Appraisal Review Board (ARB). Appraisers will review and, if possible, work to resolve the issue informally. Most issues are easily resolved provided there is sufficient evidence to allow a change. To expedite this process, owners/agents are encouraged to utilize the online portal indicated on the appraisal notice. Otherwise, owners/agents can complete the protest form included with their notice and either mail it in or hand deliver to the Appraisal District office. Please pay attention to the deadline to protest. Although you have the right to protest, the law is very clear on the deadline to exercise that right. So please take a little time, open the mail and raise whatever issue you may have in a timely manner or early if possible. Continued

C O L O R A D O SPRINGS, COLORADO (FEB 25, 2021) – Americans from all walks of life will gather on May 6th to lift up our country in prayer on the National Day of Prayer. Our nation has

the decades, the efforts of the National Day of Prayer Task Force have mobilized Americans to observe the National Day of Prayer in all 50 states and in U.S. territories to pray for those who lead and those in need in our nation. Our President Kathy Branzell reminds us of the saying, “History belongs to the intercessors who believe the future into being.” As we believe and pray in 2021, our theme echoes our prayers: “LORD pour out Your LOVE, LIFE, and LIBERTY.” Once again proclaiming a promise of God in our theme verse, 2 Corinthians 3:17 NKJV, “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” “It is our prayer today and throughout 2021 that the Spirit of the Lord would pour out and pour through us across America,” said Kathy Branzell.

“We pray to see the Lord fill our lives, families, 5/19/15 churches, workplace, education, military, government, arts, entertainment and media, with Biblical, not cultural, not worldly, but Spirit-empowered, Spirit-filled LOVE, LIFE and LIBERTY as designed and defined by our Creator and Savior.” These prayers are lifted up across the country through the efforts of our tens of thousands of volunteers who lead their communities to organize over 60,000 local events on the National Day of Prayer in the past. Last year, gatherings pivoted to virtual formats to comply with health guidelines. We learned that moving to pivot means moving to more prayer and in 2020 we were able to engage with more people than ever before, reaching into homes and hearts through tv, radio,

and internet broadcasts. This year our volunteer coordinators are preparing for a variety of events, both virtual, and in-person and events in creative formats such as prayer flights, prayer drives, television broadcasts, and more. No matter the format, there will be prayer from sunrise in Maine to sunset in the Pacific islands on the National Day of Prayer! About the National Day of Prayer: The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.

People always say the past is in the past but I beg to differ. The past is who we are, it prepares us for the future, it makes us strong...unknown

Recently, I had the privilege of reading an excerpt from the biography of Jimmy Stewart written by author Marc Eliot. This was of special interest to me because Colonel Stewart was my wing commander when we were doing combat as members of the 8th Air Force in England. He was closing his tour of duty and I was begin-

ning mine. One section of his life story was devoted to overcoming fears he had in flying hazardous duty. He did so by placing his trust in Psalms 91 giving special note to verse 11. It was through their promise and presence of God’s ministering angels that he found peace in the midst of the perils he faced. Through his testimony of overcoming fears, I am impressed to write this article on angels this week. Psalms 91:11 speaks to my heart. I think that it will speak to yours also. Listen to the words again. “For He shall give His angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways.” I believe in Angels! I believe that God has created these very special

But I also believe in God’s Ministry Angels because of their personal ministry to me. Many times they have silenced my fears and have given to me peace in the midst of troubled days. In some of the upcoming articles, I will give glory to God for the watch care and the direction He has provided through Angels along the way. I have thought all week about what recipe I would submit for this paper. After all we have Mother’s Day and Cinco de mayo right around the corner! But as I went through so many of my favorite recipes, I realized husbands will be cooking on their grills for all of us moms and maybe they would try my favorite chicken marinade.

of 1 lemon 1½ tsp. minced fresh rosemary Put in a bag and marinate 4 hours or overnight. This makes delicious chicken and can be grilled or roasted.

The Best Grilled Chicken

I hope all the Moms have a wonderful day of rest with their loved ones.

6 Tbsp. olive oil 4 lg. garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp. oregano 1 ¼ tsp. salt ½ tsp. pepper 1 ½ tsp. lemon zest, and juice

Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 or email me: fclsales@verizon. net

A PLACE NAMED FORGIVENESS

When I was a child, Saturday morning was set aside as the time we children could sit on the couch, cereal bowls in our laps, and watch Saturday morning cartoons and dramas. The dramas of that time had no rating; all were able to watch without scurrying the children from the room. There was always an overlying theme: Good guys vs. Bad guys; Right vs. Wrong. And there was always a hero and always a villain. There was one scene that I dreaded: the quandary created by quick-sand. Both the good guys and bad guys were subject to falling into the villainous and unsuspected quick-sand. The hero would show up, rope in hand, to pull the victim from the unforgiving grasp of the quagmire. I always held my breath, and my heart raced. I always longed to see the one, whether hero or villain, trapped in the foundationless death pit pulled to safety. I could not imagine any more fearsome plight than to be pulled under by this evil, death-producing force. If the one in the sand was able to lift a hand, he would grasp the rope and the hero would pull him to safety. If he were too far down and could not reach the rope, he perished. When the victim was pulled to safety, he lay on the ground sobbing and thankful to his rescuer, knowing he had been rescued and his sure-death experience had been reversed. He was breathing instead of drowning. He had been forgiven his misstep. Regardless of his own efforts, he could not overcome the pit; He owed his life to his rescuer.

Highway 82 & 287 Yard Sale Friday, June 4th & Saturday, June 5th 2021

For seventeen years on the first Friday and Saturday in June, the Red River Valley Tourism Association (RRVTA) would like to invite you to this year’s regional event of the season – the US Hwy 82 & US Hwy 287 Yard Sale! In the Red River Valley area, North Texas and Southern Oklahoma on the dates shown above, there will be yard sales, garage sales, sidewalk sales, farmer’s markets and flea markets LOCATED WITHIN participating communities covering 425 miles of the Highway 82 and Highway 287 corridors and beyond! From as far as New Boston in the east, to Munday and Seymour in the west, south to Henrietta and north to Quanah, and Frederick, Oklahoma points in between, you are sure to find lots of treasures. HOW IT WORKS: Along the way, participating towns will have maps available guiding shoppers to the special sales throughout their communities. Some towns will have yard sales set up at a central location, while others may have them spread throughout the community. Still, others will showcase their downtown merchants or their flea markets/trade days. In most communities, we DO NOT set-up along the highway. FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY: Make plans now to travel through the Red River Valley region of North Texas and Oklahoma for the US Hwy 82/287 Yard Sale. You’ll discover fun for the whole family—from heritage homes to historic down-

towns, from art to antiques, from cattle trails to cultural facilities. SEE MAP BELOW: For a list of participating US Hwy 82/287 Yard Sale communities and locations where local maps and information can be picked up. Check this page for a complete list of participating communities. 226 S. Hwy 121, Bonham, TX 903-640-0900 Hours: Sun-Thurs: 11am-9pm & Fri-Sat: 11am-10pm

All humanity suffers a similar plight. We are all at one time in the quick-sand of “Sin.” So, what is sin? Who defines it? First, sin is not merely an act – sin is a terminal condition. In our modern world, we do not want to talk about sin, or we want to change the definition of sin based on the changing times in hopes that what we once considered sin and evil can be redefined as good. This is an age-old problem as men strive to justify themselves against the absolutes of God. “Sin” means to miss the mark or miss the target, and when we miss God’s target, we find ourselves in quick-sand. One cannot turn quick-sand into an oasis, no more than we can redefine the Creator of the Universe’s laws and standards. “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and destroy.” James 4:12 All of us have missed the mark, we have “sinned.” We can compare ourselves to others, and when we do, we find ourselves better or worse by comparison. One day we are thriving, the next day we are sinking. This is when it gets to be a bottomless pit; the more we move in our sinful state, the further down we sink. “Surely there is no righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.” Ecclesiastes 7:20. We all need a hero to save us. We all need a Savior! JESUS is a transliteration of the Hebrew name YESHUA which means, “The Lord is Salvation,” or “The Lord is The Savior.” God loves His creation. He created humanity in His own image. But we humans missed God’s mark by willfully running away from the life-giving force of God and found ourselves fallen into a bottomless pit. Today, we might say that in man’s departure from their Creator, all the oxygen went out of the room. In seeking independence from God, we and all humanity ran into the quick-sand or quagmire of sin which produced death. “For the wages [results] of sin are death.” Romans 6:23. THEN CAME JESUS – GOD’S SALVATION. Jesus was born in Bethlehem (House of Bread), He was raised in Nazareth (The Branch) and after His encounter with Satan, Jesus went to Capernaum which served as the base for His earthly ministry. The name Capernaum (spelled Kaparnaham in Hebrew) means a place of consolation, forgiveness and protected by sorrow. What does that mean? As Christ Followers, we are dependent on God’s Forgiveness. On a personal level, we must agree with God that we have sinned; we have missed His mark, and, in our sorrow, we agree with God that we need His Salvation. This is called repentance. We change our direction from trying to save ourselves and admit we cannot pull ourselves up to save ourselves. We must acknowledge that JESUS is God’s Salvation and the only One that can deliver us from the pit of death. We must ask Him to save us. Jesus, as the definition and person of God’s salvation, did not just throw us a rope, He got in the pit with us, protected us, and pushed us out. He died, and because of His sinless sacrifice, death could not keep Him down. For without sin, there would be no condemnation – no wages for sin, no death. In taking our place in the pit, He stamped our rap sheet, “INNOCENT – PAID FOR BY MY DEATH. He made a covenant with anyone who would accept HIS Sacrifice – a Promissory Note stamped “PAID IN FULL” and signed with His blood. He satisfied God’s standard when we could not. Jesus was perfect before God, the very image and essence of God in the flesh. He never missed the mark; He never sinned. It was God’s plan all along that “God made Him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:21. Our life now and for all eternity is founded in GOD’S FORGIVENESS. The perfect for the imperfect; the sinless for the sinner; the living for the dead. Jesus taught, peached, lived, and died from A PLACE NAMED FORGIVENESS. “Jesus Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. I Peter 2:24. What a Hero! No wonder they call Him Savior! Signed: Teri Sheddy

Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention month. However, preventing child abuse and being aware of the signs is something all adults should do all year long. Child sexual abuse is not something that happens randomly. Fannin County Children’s Center’s Executive Director Sandy Barber said there are actually many things parents and other adults can do to prevent child sexual abuse. When checking out day cares, schools, camp or other activities for your children, Barber encourages parents to ask questions. “Do they do background checks, reference checks and personal interviews with every staff and volunteer?” said Barber. “Also ask how often they train their personnel in how to recognize

as what policies they have in place to protect against child sexual abuse.” “Most importantly, ask the organization what their policy is on one-adult one-child situations,” said Barber. Organizations that eliminate or reduce to the greatest extent possible one-adult one-child situations will greatly reduce the opportunity for sexual abuse to happen. With young children who need diapers changed or assistance going to the bathroom, Barber encourages parents to ask questions about how and where that happens at the day care or other locations. Abuse

6/2/20

Continued from page 16 All interactions between adults and children or even older youth and young children should be observable and interruptible by others. Parents should also begin talking to children about child sexual abuse when their children are very young. As young children learn to identify their eyes, ears, nose and other body parts, it a great time to also learn the proper names for their private parts. As the child grows, the conversations should change and grow too. “One way to explain it,” said Barber “is that the parts of your body covered up by your bathing suit are your private parts. If anyone tries to touch you on

your private parts or asks you to touch their private parts, tell them “no,” get away from them and go tell a parent or other trusted adult.” It is also important to explain to children that the person could be a family member, close friend or even an older youth. “There are also several books available to read to your child that will help open up a conversation about this topic,” said Barber. “Two books that we like at the Children’s Center are “It’s My Body” and “Your Body Belongs to You.” These books are simple, straight forward and inexpensive.” Barber stressed that it is important to read the book and/ or talk about this subject more than once with a child. “Think

about teaching your child how to say the alphabet or count, you cannot go over it once and 3/7/17 expect them to know it,” said Barber. “Repetition is important.” The Children’s Center also offers two types of free classes for adults. “Recognizing and Reporting” is a 1.5 hour class that covers recognizing the signs of child abuse and the steps of how to report it. “Stewards of Children” is a 3 hour class that focuses solely on sexual abuse and covers preventing, recognizing and responding appropriately. Classes will be scheduled soon and announced one the center’s website and social media. Details and registration links will be posted on the agency website at www.fanninccc.org.

LINDA LUANN (ROBLEE) PETERSON

Linda LuAnn (Roblee) Peterson, 77 of Plano, Texas, left her earthly body on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at Medical City Hospital McKinney, while holding the hands of her children and surrounded by the love of cherished friends. Family and Friends gathered to Celebrate her Life on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at 1:00 pm in Bonham, Texas at the Wise Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Clayton Davis officiated. Linda was born in Napa, California on August 24, 1943, the daughter of Stanley Ralph Roblee and Ina Maria Narragon. She was a graduate of Kearney High School in Kearney, Nebraska. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Kearney State College and quickly obtained her teaching certificate. Linda taught high school Speech, English and Drama until she met, married and started a family with Rodney Ola Peterson on April 6, 1966. Building a family and providing a home for children needing a temporary and permanent home, was of huge importance to Linda and Rod. For this reason, Linda chose to temporarily leave the classroom and spend her days being a mom to ultimately nine children, with additional “sons and daughters of the heart” often in their home. Because of their Christ-like hearts, love for people, and conscious choice to say “yes” to God’s call on their lives, Linda and Rod’s home was always open to those in need. Linda and Rod (along with 2 other couples) started a weekly Bible study in their home, that moved into their cabinet shop, then to the field of their country home, and finally became Grace Fellowship Church in Kearney, Nebraska, which still ministers the Gospel of Christ to a large congregation today. With their mission-minded hearts, Linda and Rod were also taken to the Christian Outreach Center Bible College in Missouri and then to the mission field in India where they were involved in sharing the love of Jesus and building an orphanage. Linda always considered herself a “Bridge Builder” and spent her entire adult life doing just that, building bridges and sharing loving connections between people of every race, culture, and religion. In 2003, she was officially recognized for the call on her life, her work in the mission field both in the US and internationally as a bible teacher, her service as Christian Counselor and minister, and she was officially ordained as a Minister of the Gospel by Restoration Ministries in Aurora Colorado. Once most of her kids were older, Linda also turned her mission heart back to the public school system, and returned to her love of teaching English, Speech, and Drama in Texas Public Schools. She was also passionate about her own acting and depicting female Bible characters to minister at women’s church conferences. Linda also fully enjoyed acting in productions with the Sherman Community Players throughout the years. Her teaching career took her to numerous cities and communities in Texas and allowed her to make positive changes in the lives of so many students. Up to

the day of her death, Linda still received status updates, baby and grandbaby photos, endless encouragement, and abundant messages of love from students whose lives she touched in more than 30 years of teaching. Linda took so much joy from spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Above everything, her favorite place to be, was spending time with family. Linda’s love for life, love for her family, love for her students, love for her friends, and endless love for Christ will forever live on through the lives of those she touched, even for the briefest of moments. We will miss the quirky smile that often accompanied an eye-roll and then a laugh, her gracious and generous spirit, and her awesome hugs. Yet, we have confidence we will be reunited with her again on the other side of this life. Linda was preceded in death by her parents and two sons, Ricky Eugene Peterson (1985) and Johnny Wayne Peterson (1991) and a granddaughter, Sophia Peterson (2009). Linda LuAnn Peterson is survived by her sister Lori Ellen Sizer of Friend, Nebraska. Sons: Doug Larson and wife Crissa of Haxtun, Colorado, Steven Blue and wife Asya of New York City, Randy Eugene Peterson and wife, Margie of Gober, Texas, Kevin Ola Peterson and wife, April of Bonham, Texas, Andrew Dean Peterson and wife Tammy of Slidel, Louisiana, David Allen Peterson and wife, Chris of Denison, Texas; Daughters: Kathy Lynn Peterson Kizer of Bonham, Texas, Melissa Ellen Peterson of McKinney, Texas, Kathryn Metta “Katie” Peterson of Sherman, Texas; Grandchildren: Krystal Ann Peterson Crace, Sara Marie Peterson Dirickson, Kristina Marie Nelson, Victoria Sulin Nelson, Nicholas Ola Peterson, Daine Lee Dunlap, Haidyn Paige Peterson, Jonathan David Peterson, Jeremy Wayne Peterson, Carley Denean Larson Daniel and husband Travis, Joshua Michael Larson and fiancé Jeni, Faye Nelle Blue, and Ragan Colman; Great Grandchildren: Haeden Daniel, Travis Daniel, Nevaeh Ann Dirickson, Alica Lynn Dirickson, Luke Wayne Peterson, and Emily Brooke Peterson, Nina Marie Dunlap; A number of cousins, numerous cherished friends, and countless former students. season. She earned a bronze medal as a freshman and reached the quarterfinals as a sophomore at State, before COVID-19 prematurely curtailed all University Interscholastic League sports last mid March. Meanwhile, Dodd City sophomore Austin Weeks will make his inaugural appearance at the pinnacle of high school tennis in Texas. Weeks advanced

to the 1A State boys tennis tournament by winning the Region III-1A boys singles title on April 27 at Whitney. State quarterfinals and semifinals will be in San Antonio on May 20: at the Annemarie Tennis Center for the 3A boys and girls and at the Blossom Tennis Center for 1A boys and girls. DODD CITY -- Success has come quickly for Kaylen Atchley. Last October, the Dodd City freshman teamed with a fellow underclassman via a Top-10 finish at the district meet to lead the Lady Hornets to a second-straight team regional cross country advance. However, she admitted surprise about advancing individually to the highest level -- the Class 1A State track and field meet -- in the 400m dash “It was mind-blowing,” said Atchley, on April 26. “I was shocked and proud of myself that I had made it.” Atchley finished second in the 400 at the Region III-1A Meet in April to advance to the State competition. She will vie at 6:45 p.m. on May 8 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium of The University of Texas at Austin. Atchley again achieved during her freshman year of athletics by

“I ran a mile a day to stay in shape,” she said. “I also went to a track and would sprint as fast as I could and then walk ... with my dad timing me.” Her success continued a particularly successful school year in girls athletics for Dodd City. In November, the Lady Hornets reached the volleyball regional finals for the first time since 2001 and sophomore Lindsey Mauppin advanced to State again in girls cross country. In March, Dodd City won the 1A girls basketball title with 32-0 record. In April, the Lady Hornets garnered the top district seed to the 1A softball playoffs, finishing in the top half of 15-2A -- which mostly includes 2A teams. Overall, Dodd City stood tied for fifth in the annual Lone Star Cup 1A standings, through March 18 -- only eight points out of first place.
