Children’s Center Celebrates 30 Years of Serving Children
drove more than 9,000 miles in her volunteer work over the years.
Cody Shook with the Savoy Police Department was selected as the Multidisciplinary Team Member of the Year for
the Children’s Advocacy Center. Members of the multidisciplinary team, which includes professionals from CPS, law enforcement, prosecution, medical and mental health, nominated and voted on the team member of the year. Assistant District Attorney Jessica Arnold and CPS investigator Shaterra Gunn were recognized for being finalists for the team member of the year award too. CPS Investigator Cody Trauer’s service dog Mathew received the “Goodest Boy Award” for bringing joy everywhere he goes.
Keira Prior was named the Children’s Center Volunteer of the Year. Volunteer Coordinator Kesly Chacon described how Prior volunteers with the annual School Supply and Christmas Drives and other ways around the office. Her cheerful smile and willingness to help get tasks completed in the Rainbow Rooms and around the center are greatly appreciated.
Executive Director Sandy Barber recognized current and previous board members and staff members of the Children’s Center as well as presented four Community Partner Awards. These awards were given to Fannin Bank, TXB/McCraw Oil, Glaser Family Charitable Foundation and 336th District Judge Blake. Each of these award winners have been dedicated partners with the Children’s Center in the pursuit of their mission of promoting safety and improving the lives of abused and neglected children and have helped the center reach its 30 year milestone.
Jenna Quinn was the guest speaker for the evening. She is a survivor of child sexual abuse who benefitted from a Children’s Advocacy Center in Texas. She shared some of her personal story and thanked all who were in attendance for the role they play in helping victims of abuse to recover. Quinn is also the namesake for “Jenna’s laws” which were first passed in 2009 in Texas to require child sexual abuse prevention education for students, teachers and caregivers.
The award-winning Bonham High School Choir, which recently returned from a trip to Nashville, entertained guests with a variety of songs at the beginning of the celebration. Paris Health Care Express provided a photo booth for guests. The catered dinner was served by the board members of the Children’s Center.

The Bonham Cotton Mill
By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Museum of History
The 14th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham
The Bonham Cotton Mill was organized in 1900 by nine Bonham directors acting for 192 local stockholders. “Bonham’s people invested in the mill, Bonham people operated it, and Bonham people were employed by it.” Its payroll touched almost every business in Bonham for 70 years.
The facility was located where the Powder Creek Park is today.
The high smokestack vented the smoke from coal until 1912, when electricity came. Water came from Powder Creek to create steam, necessary to maintain high humidity required for the textile operations.
An important piece of the history of the Cotton Mill is that 50 tenant houses for workers were built along South Fifth and South Sixth streets and
the cross streets in between.
Some were ready by 1901. At some point the Mill allowed the workers to purchase the homes.
The 1910 census lists 196 residents working at the Cotton Mill. This figure remained stable for 30 years.
The mill was sold to Consolidated Textile Corporation in 1920. Included in the sale were 46 tenant houses. Consolidated Textile became bankrupt a few months after the stock market crash in 1929, and mill closed in 1930.
Bonham Cotton Mills was re-chartered as a Texas corporation in 1931. Financing from local people and a Dallas trust allowed the mill to reopen.
“Nearly 200 People Will Be Put Back to Work with a $10,000 Monthly Payroll.” Employees would return to work full-time, five and one-half days a week.
The plant would require 10,000
bales of cotton to be purchased annually. The Bonham Daily Favorite described the mill as “the only plant in Texas or west of the Mississippi River that manufactures light sheeting . . . It is also the largest textile plant in Texas.” “It is no small matter to secure a plant that will give employment to two hundred people and spend ten thousand dollars a month in salaries alone.”
The photos show Cotton Mill employees in 1938.
During World War II orders for heavy fabric dramatically expanded production and the mill had 24 hour operations. By 1950 it was the largest light sheeting mill west of the Mississippi River, with 350 employees. There were three shifts daily for continuous 24 hour running time. It was for decades the major employer in Bonham.
A large story on the Cotton Mill was in the Bonham Daily Favorite on May 8, 1950. It reported on employees who had worked at the mill for between 25 and more than 40 years, with three women who had worked there for 49 years.
The operation continued un-
til bankruptcy was declared in 1970. According to a former employee, the employees were able to find work in several local sewing manufacturing companies and others were near retirement age. Many had been able to purchase their mill houses or owned their own
homes.
The community and the mill operated a free kindergarten for fifty years. It was begun in 1907 by Mrs. E. F. White and Mrs. P. B. Weaks, members of the First Methodist Church in a private residence. Later the mill supervised the construction of a permanent facility. Children from the entire town were accepted, and tuition was charged to those who could afford it.
When it closed in 1957 it was estimated that 2,000 children had attended.
In 1950 it was reported that the Bonham Cotton Mill used as much as 43% of all electrical power sold in Bonham and was the largest user of water and natural gas. During the summer months more Cokes were sold at its commissary than at any other place in Bonham.

Beware Of Thorns
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
Jesus spoke many parables.
One of the Lord’s most famous parables is the ‘parable of the sower.’ He explains the parable by saying “The ‘seed’ is the word of God” (Luke 8:11). He talks of four kinds of soil: the pathway, the rocky soil, the thorny soil, and the good soil. Matthew, Mark, and Luke record this same parable.
Jesus said that some seed “fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them” (Matthew 13:7). The Savior explains that “He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful” (Matthew 13:22). Mark records additionally that
Sunday Morning Retake “Peace, Be Still”
Hello everyone!
The Bible tells us in Deuteronomy 31:6, “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
As you well know, we all face storms from time to time in our lives. We must put our faith and our trust in the Lord, and when we do, He will see us through these trying times. That is one thing that we know for certain during these uncertain times in which we live. As Peter tells us in 1 Peter 5:7, we are to cast our cares upon Him because He loves us and very deeply cares for us.
As I’ve said before, one thing I love about doing my research for these articles is I am always finding new and interesting hymns that I either haven’t heard before or heard of. This one was written by Godfrey Thring in 1861.
“Fierce raged the tempest, o’er the deep, anxious disciples watch did keep; but you were wrapped in guileless sleep, calm and still.” “Save, us, we perish!” was their cry. “Save us or we will surely die!”
Your word above the storm rose high: “Peace! be still.”
“The wild winds hushed; the angry deep fell, like a little child, to sleep; the sullen billows ceased to leap, at your will.”
“So, when our life is clouded o’er, and storm-winds drift us from the shore, say, lest we sink to rise no more, “Peace! be still.”
If you’re looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!
Bro. Josh Stevenson
“the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful” (Mark 4:19). Luke includes that the “pleasures of this life” choke the word (Luke 8:14). Christ is warning us not to let this world get in the way of serving God. We can become so burdened with the cares of this life, that the word of God in our lives is choked and we fail to have time for spiritual matters. Jesus told the sister of Lazarus, “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part” (Luke 10:41-42).
Again, we are warned about the deceitfulness of riches. The desire to be rich can choke out the word of God in our lives. Paul pens the Lord’s message that “they that will be
Fannin County
rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition” (1 Timothy 6:9). Members of the congregation in Laodicea said, “I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing” and didn’t realize that spiritually they were “wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked” (Revelation 3:17).
The pleasures of this life and the lust of other things can easily choke out the word of God. Jesus said that we are to “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33).
Let us beware of thorns. We must strive to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only” (James 1:22). We must stay focused on things that are spiritual “that the word of the Lord may have free course” in our lives.

Fannin County Commissioners Court –Traditions & Discussions
By Rose Schwartz
Tuesday, May 2, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 8:50 a.m., a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with himself and all County Commissioners present.
2. Hear comments regarding proposed Ordinance Prohibiting Solid Waste Disposal in Fannin County: After Judge Cunningham read the agenda item, he called for public comments. Pete Phillips of Leonard came to the podium to give his reasons for his opposition to the ordinance. He noted his belief that it would make it nearly impossible for a landfill to be in Fannin County and would cause the cost of housing being built in the county to go up as housing contractors would have to pay a higher price to haul debris to landfills located in distant locales. There were no other speakers.
3. Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 8:59 a.m.
Shortly after the Special Meeting adjourned, Judge Cunningham called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. After Judge Cunningham noted Quorum was established, Pastor Kevin Towery of Allen’s Point Baptist Church led an Invocation. Pledges were led by Major James Manis, retired. There were no Introductions.
5. Public Forum: Fannin County Network Administrator Dustin Morrow spoke to advise attendees of assisted listening devices available for those having difficulty with hearing what was being said in court. After Mr. Morrow’s announcement, a citizen of Telephone spoke to exhort court officials to speak into their microphones so all who are listening can understand what is being said.
6. Presentation of Bois d’Arc Pens to the 2023 re-elected and newly elected officials by David Keene – County Judge for David Keene: Fannin
County Resident David Keene thanked the court for allowing him to carry out what has become over the years, a Fannin County Tradition (full story of this tradition can be found in the 8/2/2022 online edition of the Leader) of presenting Bois d’Arc pens to newly elected officials though it was later in the year than what has been customary. A photo was taken with Mr. Keene and the recently elected/re-elected officials.
7. A motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed unanimously.
11. Discussion, consideration and action regarding Ordinance Prohibiting Solid Waste Disposal in Fannin County – County Judge: After some discussion which included a statement by Mr. Phillips who spoke during the special meeting, Judge Cunningham reiterated the goal of preventing Fannin County from being forced to take on garbage from the metroplex and neighboring counties. He cited advice from TAC (Texas Association of Counties) of this being the best way to protect Fannin County from the unpleasantries of having a landfill located in an undesirable location to residents. Two Commissioners stated their support of this action before a motion was made by Commissioner Kopf to adopt the Ordinance with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed unanimously.

Apex & Adieu:
DC senior Weeks overcomes health issue, plays in third-straight State tennis tourney
4/4/23
By Rich Hilliard
BONHAM -- It took the Covid-19 worldwide pandemic to truncate Austin Weeks' freshman season of high school tennis at Dodd City.
It took the reoccurrence last month of a recent personal health issue to almost do likewise to his senior campaign.
"I had had it for the first time over the summer," said Weeks of rhabdomyolysis.
"I played my third game that day," he said, "and I started to cramp.
"The first time it happened; it had scared me -- to the point that I took a couple of months off -- and it hadn't happened again."
Weeks' senior season had mirrored his sophomore and junior campaigns. He repeated as the District 23-1A champion in boys' singles -- and looked en route to winning his third-straight regional championship.
However, after winning his third match this year at
the Region III-1A Boys' Tournament, his body cramps and muscle spasms returned. He had to forgo playing in the regional championship match. An almost two-day stay ensued in an emergency room where he received IV fluids, according to a Facebook post by his mom, Candace Weeks.
The senior would still play in the Class 1A State Tournament for a third-straight season -- but instead as the Region III-1A runner-up in boys' singles.
"I really wanted to win first in the region," said Weeks. "I knew [if I did] I wouldn't have to play the No. 1 seed.
"My hopes were high," he said. "I seemed capable of getting to the championship if I had gotten first place [at the regional].
"Going into this year, I had high expectations. I really wanted to go all the way -- that's what everybody wants."
Simultaneously, Weeks had concerns about another appearance of rhabdomyolysis "I thought, going into
State, that it might happen again ...," said Weeks. "My dad (Dillon Weeks) helped me push that away."
The Dodd City senior started off well against Camden Sperry of Happy on Aprl 25 in the 1A State boys' singles quarterfinals. He won the first set 6-2 -- equating his first win at the State level -before losing the next two, 6-2, 6-1.
"I sat after I won. I got so excited. I may have gotten over confident," said Weeks. "In the second set ... his serves started to go in ... They were the fastest I've seen. He got into my head.
"Dad said I looked gassed -- maybe not recovered fully from what had happened at regionals," he said. "Normally, I'm not exhausted after I play.
"After that [match], I had to sit. I was sore and weak. I hadn't recovered fully."
Playing For The Quarters: Bonham s'ball returns to playoffs, extends stay after rare miss in '22
By Rich Hilliard
BONHAM -- A return to the softball playoffs after a rare absence initially looked shortlived when Bonham dropped the first game of its Region II3A bi-district series.
Junior Reyleigh Shockley took the circle at home before noon on April 29 for Game 2 of the best-of-three -- the Lady Warriors needed a win to prolong their postseason return.
"All I did was hit my spots," said Shockley. "I knew after the first game that Paris Chisum could not hit outside pitches. I got them to all dink the ball, that helped out and I worked with my team since Chisum was fast on the bases. We talked about what to do.
"I didn't want my junior season to end by giving up a lot of runs," she said. "I really did it for my team."
Bonham won Game 2 at home, 4-1, and, later that day, posted a 1-0 win at Nevada Community over Chisum in the decisive series contest -- to have a reason to still be practicing as May arrived.
"The kids showed up, eliminated mistakes [made in the 9-3 first game loss] and hit the ball," said Bonham manager Micky Englutt.
"On the defensive side, for Reyleigh to give up zero earned runs all day in 14 innings is really phenomenal," said Englutt. "She did an awesome job and the defense
with her.
"We stepped up. Sometimes kids surcome -- ours didn't."
The bi-district win advanced Bonham to a series against Whitesboro, putting the Lady Warriors in the area round for the first time since 2019 -- with a chance to reach their first regional quarterfinals since making their third of three-consecutive trips in 2018.
"It feels great not having the season end so fast," said senior Sarah Wrape, first baseman, pitcher, Independence Community College signee -and a part of Bonham's 2021 bi-district finalist team. "This group is underestimated and nobody thinks we can go far; it's nice to prove them wrong."
"I think all our hard work we have put in has helped out this season," said senior catcher
Aisly Andrew. "We believe that we can and never give up." The bi-district series also ended the final full week of April which began with Bonham, Bells, Gunter and Pottsboro in a season-ending four-way tie for the 11-3A championship -- the Lady Warriors' first title share since 2017. Bonham beat Pottsboro, 5-2, on April 24 in one ensuing play-in, lost a coin flip with Bells and advanced as the district's No. 2 seed.
"It was a stressful long week for sure, with lots of unknowns," said Englutt. "I felt like, from when we finished district, that we stood a good chance at getting one of the top two seeds -- that would put us in a good position to be successful."
Shockley's efforts in the final two games of the bi-district series likewise continued her successful junior season in the circle.
"She's done this all year," said Englutt. "She has a 1.11 earned run average -- that's the No. 1 all-time Bonham High School best. Mackenzie Downs [a 2018 graduate and four-year starter] had a 1.59. "When you are an athlete like Downs, that tells you what a quality year you have had," he said. "Reyleigh's a heck of a pitcher -- her 186 strikeouts and 19 wins in a season each put her fourth in BHS history.
"She's been phenomenal in the pitcher's circle."
Despite not advancing deeper into the State event, Weeks' success the last three seasons has coincided with the resurrection of the sport at Dodd City -- where, as a sophomore and junior, he equated the school's only entrant in the annual district tournament.
"This year, Dodd City almost had a full team at district and my little sister (Addison) got to regionals [as a freshman]," said Weeks. "I’m excited for her. The girl who beat her [at regionals] went to State. It's a good start for her.
"Coach (Landon) Dyer helped me get into tournaments," he added, regarding Dodd City's second-year tennis coach. "He did a great job."
While Weeks has no plans to play competitively again after graduation this month, he won't shy from courts. "I'll play against my sister," said Weeks. "I think she has a great chance to go to State. "If she does that," he said. "I'll feel accomplished."
Meanwhile, he said Bonham's offense has improved over last season -- when a lack of a season-ending tiebreaker with Bells for fourth place stopped the Lady Warriors' postseason streak at 12.
"The kids all throughout the lineup have come through all year," said Englutt. "There's not been one spot where you wondered if we were capable of producing a run."
The offense has come from a mix of veterans and newcomers.
Through April 30, he noted Shockley "as pushing a .500" batting average," with the returning Wrape and Andrew being amongst those hitting .400 or better.
Freshman right fielder Emely Alfaro had a .518 batting average -- and a .600 on-basepercentage in 100 at bats.
Englutt also noted freshman Gray Lancaster for having driven in a run from the bottom of the llineup and her play at second base.
"She has filled an infield position I wasn't sure how she'd handle," said Englutt. "She has gotten better weekly.
"It's has been a fun and exciting year," he said. "This group shows up and has a good time. It's a special group. They are a laid back group -- it's more about having fun than winning for them.
"I'm awfully proud. To be 24-9 overall is amazing. I would have never expected this."

The Future of Fishing at Lake Ralph Hall
Press Release - May 2023-
Projects are underway to provide top-notch fishing and sightseeing at the future Lake Ralph Hall, including plans for a fishing jetty. The planned jetty will be around 200 feet long and provide access for fishermen and visitors without a boat and will offer opportunities for sightseeing out on the lake. It will be located east of Hwy 34 at the northern part of the lake.
This fishing jetty will require its own embankment and will be stabilized on both sides to protect it from wave action. The top will be finished with an appropriate walking surface. A portion of the funding for the jetty is being provided through a $250,000 grant that Texas Parks and Wildlife received from Bass Pro Shops. In addition to the jetty, progress on fish habitat structures continues in key areas of the lake bottom. Much of the logs from the cleared areas are be-

– County Judge: Judge Cunningham commented on an issue raised in the previous Commissioners Court by Citizen Jason Walker of the possible illegality of county work done on a certain road leading to a cemetery. He went over all the reasons why, after he researched this, he determined that not only was the Commissioner’s action lawful, but that Commissioner Lane was right to have the work done. He concluded by stating he will always welcome and investigate any comments or questions from citizens on issues of concern to them.
30. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane voiced appreciation for those attending today’s court and
the great discussions had, requested patience on road work being done and wished all a great week. Commissioner Self thanked everyone for their attendance, thanked all for allowing him to serve the county and wished everyone a great week. Commissioner Magness also noted his appreciation for great discussions. Commissioner Kopf thanked everyone for coming and for all the discussions. He noted though everyone may not always agree, at the end of the day we’re on the same team, commented on progress in his precinct and wished all a good day. Judge Cunningham thanked David Keene for his pen, noting how he is an asset to the community. He concluded by hoping everyone enjoys the great weather and wished God’s blessings on all. 31. Cast for Kids – Lake Bonham
Press Release - The C.A.S.T.
(“Catch A Special Thrill”) for Kids Foundation will hold it’s second annual C.A.S.T. for Kids event At Lake Bonham event on Saturday, May 13, 2023. This will be a free boating and fishing event for children with special needs. The event is open to all children, ages 6 -18+, regardless of their needs. Participants must pre-register online at https://castforkids.org/event/ lakebonham and space is limited to the first 40 children who register.
At each event, participants receive a free Zebco rod & reel, tackle box, event t-shirt, fishing cap, award plaque, and lunch for everyone, provided by Texas Farm Bureau. A morning of fishing will be followed by a picnic lunch for all and an awards ceremony for the kids.
The Bonham Fire Department will have a truck to show and Lone Star Law star and Fannin County Game Warden, Randolph McGee will be on hand to honorarily deputize each child.
Volunteer boaters will be taking the kids boating and fishing from 8 am to 11:30 am. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian on the boat. If boat space allows, additional siblings and family members may be able to go boating as well. However, only participants and one parent or guardian are guaranteed to go boating at the event.
We need volunteer boaters and corporate sponsors! Anyone who would be like to volunteer with their boat or sponsor this event should contact the Bonham event coordinator, Eric Rice at lakebonham@castforkids.org or 360.241.1790. For registration questions, contact Jennifer Reeves at lakebonhm@castforkids.org or 469.463.4993.
The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation is recognized as a taxexempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions are deductible to the extent allowed by law.
