LThe Fannin County Courthouse Progress Let the Cleaning Begin

By Sandy Hood

After several mock ups, the process recommendation for the exterior cleaning

of the courthouse has been given to Frontier Waterproofing. The process will be as follows: • Medium warm water,

pressure wash loose debris from areas to be cleaned. • One quarter to one half inch application of Peel Away 1, cover with Dumond Paper for 24 hours. Reapply a thin coat of Peel Away

1 if material under paper dries prior to removal. • Remove Dumond Paper and scrape with plastic putty knife. • Rinse with warm water at medium pressure, using a

blading method to remove any stubborn spots. • Apply one quarter to one half inch of Smart Strip to dry, peeled surfaces that have black mastic remaining. • Cover with plastic or Dumond Paper if temperatures are over 85 degrees. • Remove covering after 6-24 hours. • Rinse with warm water at medium pressure, using a blading method to remove stubborn spots. • Use soft bristle brush if needed in area with remaining black coloring. Let the cleaning begin. You should be able to see a noticeable difference on the east side of the courthouse. This week, the east exterior was warm water pressure washed and a fair amount of black mastic was removed (see picture). On Tuesday and Wednesday, Frontier completely cleaned an area on the east side of the courthouse (lower south part) according to the recommendations (see pictures). Frontier continues to work

on removing bricks from the exterior side of the windows. It appears that they have completed the east and north sides and are working on the west side. Frontier also continues to work on cleaning the ceiling inside the courthouse. Late Thursday afternoon, a large amount of Peel Away 1 and Smart Strip was delivered to the courthouse. Over 90 bids were received for Phase II of the restoration. The general public should hear information regarding the bids and who will be chosen to perform the work by mid-July. The Fannin County Courthouse Restoration Groundbreaking Ceremony is, Tuesday, June 11th at 11:00am. Everyone is encouraged to attend. At Commissioners Court this week, Judge Moore referred to a painting that he saw at the museum, of the courthouse when it was first finished in 1888, and there was over 10,000 people that attended the grand opening.

Thank You to everyone for all the prayers, phone calls, visits, food and flowers. We appreciate your love and support. Family of Jorene (Sangster) Collinsworth

From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17

By Bro. Bill Beasley Hebrews 11 Hebrews 12:1-3 While the Book of Hebrews does not specify the name of its writer most Biblical Scholars believe it to be Paul. Their reasoning is based on a similarity of style as the other epistles that are Pauline. Also, the choice of some of the words are those readily accepted as his. From my college and seminary studies as well as through many years of sermon building, I am inclined to agree that Paul is the author. Hebrews 11:1 to He-

brews 12:3 is my selection of scripture for the week and have given to me the subject “Setting A Good Example”. Hebrews 11 gives to us a list of role models whose witness encompassed Paul as well as us today. Listen to the words of our author “Seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses ---” he made the following 3-way commitment to set a good example: 1. “Let us lay aside our besetting sins.” 2. Let us run with patience the race that God has set before us. 3. Let us look to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.

No one will ever doubt the heartfelt commitment that Paul displayed as he set a good example and is known today as God’s missionary to the Gentiles. His faithfulness gave birth to

our opportunity to believe. The message for us lives eternally. God’s desire for us is be a good example in our walk, in our talk, and in the attitudes, we possess for a lost world. May God Bless you in your efforts to Glorify Him.

Combine flour, 1 cup sugar and milk. Mix well. Pour over melted butter. DO NOT STIR. Combine peaches and remaining 1 cup sugar in sauce pan. Bring to boil. Pour over batter. DO NOT STIR. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until browned. NOTE: Lenda says she usually puts the peaches on to boil first. While they are heating, she melts the butter. While the butter is melting, she makes the batter. By then, the peaches are ready. Sometimes she also adds a dash of cinnamon to the batter. She has added fresh blueberries to the peaches, too.

COOKING IN FANNIN COUNTY 10/4/16

by Tommie Sue Turner

I received this recipe from a dear friend for many years, Lenda High. She said that she saw the recipe for the Easy Peach Cobbler, and it sounded much like the one she makes. She also said that she puts lots of peaches in the freezer when in season in 4 cup measures so she is all set when she gets ready to make this recipe. She also likes to chop rather than slice the peaches. This recipe sounds so good! I’m definitely going to try this one, especially with the dash of cinnamon! Thanks you so much, Lenda! LENDA’S QUICK PEACH COBBLER 1 stick butter 1 cup self-rising flour 2 cups sugar, divided 1 cup milk 4 cups sliced fresh peaches Melt butter in a 9x13” pan.

Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

Here are just a few interesting facts; (A) The entire project is a $217 million project. (B) The Raw Water Pump Station that will be pumping water to Leonard is the size of a football field; it will have 9 pumps and will be nearly 100 feet deep. (C) Construction should begin next month on one of the Terminal Storage Reservoirs in Leonard that will hold 210 million gallons of water. The second one is projected to be built around 2025-2026. (D) When up and running, the Water Treatment Plant will start out pumping 17 million gallons of water a day, but will build up to pumping about 280 million gallons a day. When the plant gets to pumping 140 million gallons a day, they will build additional facilities in the plant. (E) There will be about 300 columns for the 897 bridge being built. Austin Bridge and Road is about half way done putting the columns in. (F) The impoundment date will be late 2020 with the Water Treatment Plant being completed in the fall of 2021 and water will start being pumped to McKinney about March of 2022. (G) The mitigation project is a 20 year program. 8. shared that there was a small tornado in Gober last week. There were a lot of trees down on county roads. He really appreciated the citizens that came out to help clean the mess up. Work is happening on the courthouse. It will be a really pretty building when it is done. They are working on the inside taking lead based paint off the ceiling. June 11th at 11:00am, is the ground breaking event for the courthouse and he would like to see everyone attend. Regarding the cattle situation, we all need to be good neighbors. If you have cattle, they are going to get out. • Judge Moore suggested that a list be developed of different people from all precincts that could help address Estray problems. He

asked that Cody Maxwell from the Agrilife Extension Office create a program on cattle and Estray information and what residents as neighbors can do to help. June 11th at 11:00am is the ground breaking event for the courthouse. Everyone is invited to be present. He then referred to a painting that he saw at the museum of the courthouse and when it was first finished in 1888 and over 10,000 people attending to celebrate the opening of it. Judge Moore stated that Commissioners Court will not have an agenda item on the bids for the courthouse on June 18th as planned and that it may be early July now (because it does not give time for Turner Construction and the commissioners to look at the bids).

A Moment in Time: Skytrains Across the Channel

By Jeffrey S. Williams

On a dreary, overcast June afternoon in Exeter, England, Corporal William Wildes attached nozzles to the wings of the green and white C-47 Skytrain aircraft formerly known as the “Pride of Minnesota.” Pouring approximately 100 gallons of fuel into each wing, he did it exactly like he had done several times before in the previous months for the training missions to prepare for the Normandy invasion. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, except the white invasion stripes and the large “6Z” that was painted onto the fuselage earlier in the day. “The planes were fueled in the afternoon of June 5th. We didn’t know where they were going. We just fueled them like normal,” said Corporal Wildes, a special vehicle operator for the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron. “One pilot had ‘Pride of Minnesota’ inside an arrowhead painted on the nose, but they made him take it off when they put the invasion stripes on for D-Day.” By evening, each of the 45 aircraft belonging to the 440th Troop Carrier Group was laden down with paratroopers from the 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division for the flight across the English Channel. Among the notables flown by the 96th TCS was the famed “Filthy 13,” a demolitions platoon from the 3rd Battalion Company Headquarters. Each member wore a Mohawk-style haircut and face paint and collectively they were quite tenacious fighters. They also dropped Corporal Bobbie Rommel, a relative of General Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, who was leading the German resistance in Normandy. But not everything went without a hitch. “I heard that somebody ran into the deicer boot and tore it up. They replaced this one plane and put another plane in its place. The crew chief was a guy named Bluestone. I remember him well and I fueled his plane,” the corporal recalled. “It was all an unknown for us,” said Major George Johnson, who was an operations officer with the 98th Troop Carrier Squadron during the invasion. “We dropped at night and daytime for the preparations. When we went into Normandy, it was agreed that Colonel Frank X. Krebs, the 440th Troop Carrier Group commander, would lead.” Major Johnson was promoted to lieutenant colonel a short time later as the 96th Troop Carrier Squadron commander. After a stellar career, he retired in 1975 at the rank of major general. At 11:53 p.m., Colonel Krebs took off from Exeter in aircraft number 292717, call sign ‘Ada,’ followed by 44 other aircraft from the

95th, 96th, 98th and 98th troop carrier squadrons that comprised the group. Captain William R. Cooper led the 96th TCS in chalk 19, aircraft number 100965. Once airborne, the only navigational aids used were blue lights on the tops of the wingtips and fuselage, as the aircraft rendezvoused with other Skytrains from the IX Troop Carrier Command and Royal Air Force. With only the moonlight to navigate them in complete radio silence, the American and British forces joined together to make the big jump across the English Channel as the lighthouses of England slowly slipped away beneath them. Once they reached the coast of Normandy, a cloud cover enveloped the planes, followed by the blue hue of searchlights and flak from German anti-aircraft batteries. Colonel Krebs honed into the radio signal from the Pathfinders who jumped in an hour before to mark the drop zone. At 1:36 a.m., the paratroopers received the command, “stand up and hook up.” Four minutes later, the green light came on giving the okay to jump. In a matter of seconds, the sky was filled with the billowing white parachutes of the 101st Airborne Division heading for Drop Zone D, near Ste. Mere Eglise, France, 400 feet below. In his memoirs titled, “The Filthy Thirteen,” Sergeant Jake McNeice wrote the following regarding his flight into Normandy, “Those Germans were firing ammunition up at us that went all through the plane, our chutes and things like that. Those stinking automatic weapons had tracers about every fifth round. It just looked like a string of fire coming up at us. I did not know that there was any other color of tracer than orange but it looked like the greatest display of fireworks that I ever saw in my life. It was beautiful. They would have a blue one then a couple of red then a couple green. There was every color in the rainbow rising up to meet us. We lost several planeloads of paratroopers but the greater part came through it.” Technical Sergeant Charles Everett Bullard, a crew chief assigned to the 98th TCS, recorded a piece of 96th TCS history in his memoir, “Little One and His Guardian Angel.” “Later, we found that two of the 96th squadron planes had crash-landed shortly after dropping their troopers,” he wrote. “One plane of the 96th squadron came in on only one engine with the radio operator wounded by a bullet in the neck. He was the group’s first Purple Heart winner; Staff Sergeant Earnest S. Iannuccilli.” Corporal Wildes remembers the scene when the aircraft returned. “I was on guard duty

when they left and was still up when they returned,” he said. “Some of the guys they brought back were shot up quite a bit. One of them got shot in the privates from flak that penetrated underneath the aircraft. It was a real mess. Technical Sergeant. Edward Bluestone, the crew chief whose plane I fueled earlier that day, well we lost him on that day at D-Day.” While other troop carrier groups were scattered due to the cloud covering at the coast, misplaced their drops by flying in too fast, or were shot down by the Germans, only the 3rd Battalion of the 506th P.I.R. landed in close proximity to their designated drop zone. At 6:30 a.m., the main landing force of the 1st, 4th and 29th U.S. Infantry Divisions, 2nd Ranger Battalion, 3rd and 50th British Infantry Divisions and Canada’s 3rd Infantry Division landed at Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches making a 60-mile long front. The Associated Press reported an Allied loss of 70 aircraft on the first day of the operations - 17 various fighter aircraft, 12 C-47 Skytrains, 12 CG-42 gliders, 13 British heavy bombers, 6 P-47 Thunderbolts, 4 A-20 Havocs, 2 P-38 Lightnings, 2 U.S. Medium Bombers, 1 British Beaufighter and 1 U.S. Heavy Bomber. Of course the 440th Troop Carrier Group was only one of twelve troop carrier groups ferrying troops from England to France that day in over 800 aircraft. Other groups faced similar experiences. Howard Cowan, from Shawnee, Oklahoma, was a correspondent aboard a C-47 piloted by Lieutenant Colonel John Neale, 435th Troop Carrier Group executive officer, which departed from RAF Welford. Neale, too, was from Shawnee, and instead of carrying a load of paratroopers, his “chalk” was assigned to tow a glider. “When we came back to England the metal hide of our powerful twin-engined C-47 was messed up like a bride’s first entry into a can of early June peas. The radio and electrical systems were damaged but nobody was hit,” he wrote in a dispatch for the Associated Press. After a routine “sightseeing” flight from Welford, the flight was smooth until the aircraft reached the French coast, Cowan recalled. “Our P-51 fighter escort had a whale of a time playing tag over and under, dodging in and out of our column and a formation of homeward bound B-17s and C-47s,” he wrote. “From a tiny island off shore came the first ack ack, but the bursts were far away.” Continued

“Red and green tracers overlapped in huge arcs that reminded you of an old-fashioned grape arbor. Flares from flak bursts made you jump, but they were so far off there was no noise and didn’t seem to matter much – at least not like the 20-millimeter shell which sawed through the fuse-

added. “Red and green tracers – they are not as fast in the movies – drifted up at an angle of about 45 degrees well ahead of our ship. For every one of those colored lights there are four bullets you can’t see.” “Then we got over enemy lines and the machine-guns started. We hadn’t loosed the glider yet and our speed

still left something to be desired. I was on my knees peering out of the window, bundled up in Mae West life 5/7/19 and preserver, parachute flak-suit,” he wrote. “Just then we zipped through a fusillade like a train passing switch signals. It sounded as if the plane had run into a hail-storm and somebody was trying to cut it into two with a meat saw,” noting that this happened moments before re-

leasing the glider, piloted by 1st Lieutenant Joe Herriage from Bonham, Texas. “All of a sudden the plane lurched forward with a jerk and I looked back in time to see Joe’s glider rope go limp. He soared upward a moment, then banked and coasted down gracefully. On both sides 20 mm shells were coming up now – beating a tattoo on the ship that rose above the noise of the engines,” including the one

Honey Grove High School Students Win Beta Club Scholarships

By Ruth Ann Jones

[Honey Grove, Texas]— The National Beta Club announced that Amelia Butler and Soleil Landreth of Honey Grove High School have been named as National Beta Scholars which entitles each of them to a scholarship award of $1,000. Also Aaron Nelson, Makenzie Harper, and Laura Bell have been named Texas State Beta Scholars which also entitles each of them to a $1,000 scholarship award. The National Beta Club encourages its’ members to continue education beyond high school. They do this through their national scholarship program. They were each nominated for

this award by the local Beta Club sponsor, Ruth Ann Jones. Beta members are not only high academic achievers; they are also leaders and service-minded individuals. While grades and SAT/ ACT scores help determine Beta Scholars, it’s the leadership and service activities as Betas that draw the winners to the top. “These outstanding young people represents the true spirit of National Beta, having excelled not only academically, but in leadership and service to school and community as well,” said the executive director of the National Beta Club.

However, despite how graceful Lieutenant Herriage’s glider looked upon initial release, he was killed when the glider slammed into a wall when landing in Ste. Mere Eglise. His glider load contained elements of the 320th Glider Field Artillery Battalion of the 82nd Airborne Division. Continued See Skytrains on page 14

Bank Of Windom Granted Official Texas Historical Recognition

WINDOM, Texas—The Texas Historical Commission (THC) has recognized the Bank of Windom as a significant contributor to the state’s history by awarding it an Official Texas Historical Marker. The designation honors the Bank of Windom as an important and educational part of local history. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held on Saturday, June 15, at 11:00 a.m. at the historic bank building located at 501 Main Street in Windom, TX. Speakers at the event will include Larry Standlee,

that hit the fuselage next to him. “It was easy to tell by the increased pitch of the engines that we were going places – fast. We were lucky. Some came home with dead and wounded aboard. Some didn’t come home. The Germans were ready this time. Hundreds of planes had been in ahead of us and it seemed we flew down an avenue lined with machine guns,” he concluded.

Windom Historical Marker provides awareness of our fascinating history to members of our community and guests, and it will become a building block for the promotion of local tourism,” said Larry Standlee. “The THC granted the Bank of Windom a subject marker, reflecting the importance of banking to Windom and the surrounding community throughout its history”, said Chris Ebling. “In the late 1800s, prosperous farms and businesses in and around Windom generated a need for working capital and local banking services” he explained, describing the bank’s origin. “Recognizing this need for local banking services, a group of local business owners opened the private Bank of Windom in 1900, located initially inside F. C. Council’s store. In October of 1902, the bank relocated to a new brick structure on the corner of Main and 2nd Streets.” “As I was researching the history of this building, Evelyn Montgomery, the former Director of Collections,

Exhibits and Preservation at Dallas Heritage Village, shared with me that it likely was built by a group of itinerant masons who replicated this same structure for banking businesses across North Texas. Today only three of these bank buildings remain in the area: one at Old City Park in Dallas, another in the town of Ponder in Denton County, and this one in Fannin County,” said Mr. Ebling. As Fannin County embraces new opportunities and challenges of the twenty-first century, the historic Bank of Windom provides an important link to the rich heritage of the region. By recognizing the historic significance of the Bank of Windom through the historic marker program, the Texas Historical Commission has ensured its continued relevance for future generations of Texans.

Honey Grove ISD Summer Food Program

By Deidra Jackson

Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove was beautiful over the Memorial Day weekend. With loving care, over 600 American flags were placed on the graves of veterans. In addition, large flags were placed on the entrances to Oakwood off of Highway 100. The flags of each branch of the armed services were placed in front of the memorial area along with a red, white, and blue wreath. The officers and board members of the Oakwood Cemetery Association

would like to convey our sincere thanks to all the volunteers who put out the flags and took them up when the weekend was over. In spite of 9.74” of rain in May, Oakwood was beautiful. Memorials were given during the month of May for the following: Othella Roberts, Betty Clark, Toby Hall, Wanda Robison, and Mildred Yarbrough. If you would like to send a memorial or donation, the address is Oakwood Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 96, Honey Grove, TX 75446.

Big Event at the Honey Grove Library June 15 By Malinda Allison

Best-selling author Karen Witemeyer has set her new historical romance novel in Honey Grove of 1896. The lighthearted story features a single woman who owns a bakery on the Honey Grove Square and a gentleman who comes into her life. The book will become available on Amazon. com on June 4. We are delighted that the official

book launch will take place at the Honey Grove Library on Saturday, June 15 at 10:30 am. Karen will be here to discuss her book and the process she uses to write historical fiction. Her previous book was set in Pecan Gap. In keeping with the theme of the book, the event at the Library will also feature a Bake Sale of goodies created by members of the Friends of the Library, the Honey Grove Preservation League and the Honey Grove Chamber of Commerce, the three organizations sponsoring the event. Community members are also asked to bring in bakery items for sale, and a drawing will be held to present gift cards to 5 of the people who have brought in bakery items.

Karen was recently voted #1 Readers’ Favorite Christian Romance Author by Family Fiction Magazine, and is a two-time winner of the ACFW Carol Award and three-time RITA finalist. We are delighted that she chose Honey Grove as the setting of her latest story. Please join us on June 15 for a fun morning in the newly renovated Lyday Hall (formerly the Civic Center) at the Honey Grove Library on the Square in Honey Grove. This program is made possible in part with a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Herriage was initially buried in the U.S. Military Cemetery in Blosville, France, but he was later repatriated and buried at the Moore’s Chapel Cemetery in his hometown of Bonham, Texas. The battle was not over for the 96th TCS after performing their initial drop. At dawn on the morning of June 7, Major Johnson flew the lead aircraft in the resupply mission. “All of we operations officers were to fly on the resupply mission,” he said. “We carried ammunition, food, medical supplies and water.” “We went in about 15 to 20 miles behind enemy lines, descended to 500 feet for the drop and came back across Omaha beach. We had a beautiful view of the landing craft,” Johnson said. “There was lots of flak and small arms fire and aircraft damage. We were fortunate that we didn’t lose any aircraft. We were so low that all the people on the ground could shoot at us with small arms fire. I led them down to treetop level and then got out of there and back up to the proper altitude,” he remembered. “It was quite an event in our lives. We got out of there quickly after we did our jobs. We were very fortunate,” he concluded. Little did anybody know, on the evening of June 5, that there would be heroes in the making who jumped out of the aircraft early the next morning. Of the 231 soldiers of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment who lost their lives at Normandy, 103 were from the 3rd Battalion, including those who died in three of the 440th TCG aircraft that perished in the operation. The 96th Troop Carrier Squadron was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation, the precursor to the Presidential Unit Citation, for their efforts at Normandy. Their legacy lives on through the 96th Airlift Squadron, assigned to the 934th Airlift Wing of the U.S. Air Force Reserve at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

By Sandy Hood The County Extension Office expressed their appreciation to Commissioners Court for their ongoing support. Without their support, programs would not be possible. Bethany Arie, County Extension Agent for Fannin County, highlighted the court on a few programs they have going on that they are really proud of. Bethany stated that in 2015, it was identified that more education was needed in the County to help prepare youth and young adults for college, the workforce and moving on

to be productive citizens in the community. Bethany stated that they have been working on this for a couple of years and they have come up with a pretty comprehensive plan. The Extension Office has been able to accomplish the following programs as part of a project to address the need for more education. Welcome to the Real World - This is an extension program designed for high school freshman that teaches real life money management skills like managing your bank account, credit cards, student loans, saving, budgeting and spending priorities. The program culminates with a real world simulation where students choose a career and then have to make spending choices based on their actual salaries after taxes and loan payments. The goal of this program is to provide students with a realistic money management experience, along with beginning to explore various career choices. This program has

been implemented at several Fannin County schools over the past few years, and so far this year, the Extension Office has graduated 62 students from the Welcome to the Real World program. The students end the program with a real life simulation, where the students are given a job (career), given what their gross salary will be and then they get to see what it looks like after taxes and student loan payments are taken out of their checks. Then the kids have the opportunity to make spending choices, like buying a car. This gives the kids a realistic picture of what it is like to budget their money when they are on their own. Bethany stated that they recently finished a class where some of the students first chose to live in an apartment, but later came back and said, “Can I just live with my parents? I can stay there for free.” Their money did not go as far as they first thought it would. This class is for freshman. Fannin Future Fair – The

Fannin Futures Fair is an enhanced college and career exploration fair. The goal of the fair is to provide 11th grade students with as many resources as possible under one roof so they can explore as they begin to plan for college and/ or careers. Another critical part of this fair and something that sets it apart from other college fairs is the real life job interview session, where the students are educated about how to handle themselves in job interviews and how to be a good employee. Social media and how it can impact the job search is discussed. There is also a dynamic keynote speaker each year to encourage the students. This program has been extremely successful. The Extension Office has heard back from many students over the years that have been able to make those connections at the Futures Fair and how it really made a difference for them. Over the past 4 years, about 2,000 Fannin County students have participated in this program. RSSI: A new opportunity the Extension Office has been able to offer in the county, the Rural Student Success Initiative. Last year, due to the success of the youth college and

As part of the project, Trenton was able to receive funding to help support the initiative. Just a few highlights from this past school year on this project are; the ability to offer education for parents on financial aid, the college application process, an ACT prep workshop for students, assistance in paying for the ACT testing and the ability to take students and parents on college tours. The first Adulting101 day was also started. This is where students rotated through various educational sessions on everything from car maintenance to dealing with taxes. The day ended with a Welcome to the Real World simulation. The Extension Office is hoping for some measurable data when this project is completed in 3 years so that they can receive additional funding to add more Fannin County schools to the programs. They believe these programs will really make a difference in the lives of the students and Fannin County. You can contact the Fannin County Agrilife Extension Office at 903-583-7453. Please take a look at their website. They have a lot going on to support people of all ages, https://fannin.agrilife.org/

career exploration programs, our county was chosen to be 2-19-19 part of a 3 year project with the goal of increasing the number of rural students who go on after high school to complete college or a certificate programs. This is a grant project funded by the Greater Texas Foundation and the TLL Temple Foundation. As a part of this program, the Extension Office was able to identify a school within the county that they felt would be able to meet the criteria to handle the extra work that comes along with it, and Trenton High School was chosen. The Extension Office is currently working with high school administrators and the high school counselors to serve 183 students through Trenton ISD within this project. Starting in junior high, specific tasks are being implemented and built on throughout high school to get more students on track to go to college or complete a certificate programs. The first school year in the project just wrapped up and Trenton HS did an amazing job with it. Amy Shaw, the school counselor, jumped right in and worked with the Extension Office on developing a plan, and identifying the critical things that are needed to make it happen.

Game Warden Field Notes

No Fishing License, But a Lot of Other Stuff On May 11, a Navarro County game warden was patrolling around Richland Chambers Reservoir when he noticed an individual fishing near one of the boat ramps. As the warden approached, the individual fishing confessed, “I’m not going to lie to you, I don’t have a fishing license.” That proved to be the extent of his truthfulness. Actually, he didn’t have any identification and couldn’t recall the name of the person who owned the vehicle he was driving. The individual also claimed he no longer had anything illegal left

on his person or in the vehicle. Afterwards, during a probable cause search of his person and the vehicle, multiple illegal narcotics and paraphernalia items were discovered. The subject was arrested and transported to the Navarro County Jail on several drug-related offenses. He was also cited for not having a fishing license. A Boatload of Fish On May 6, Jasper County game wardens received information alleging three local crappie fishing guides were permitting out-of-state fishermen to violate bag limits. The daily limit for crappie is 25 fish greater than 10 inches in length. An investigation found 808 crappie had been retained by a dozen anglers, resulting in 245 game law violations. No Snapchatting Gator Selfies A Louisiana game warden reached out to his counterparts in Sabine County about several individuals who had posted to Snapchat their alligator catching adventure on the Texas side of Toledo Bend Reservoir. A Texas game warden traveled to Sabine Parrish to assist with the investigation. The cooperation between the bordering states was essential and beneficial to the investigation. While being interviewed, the suspect stated he and the other men were fishing around the Indian Mounds area and caught the alligator on the bank, took pictures of the alligator, and then released it. The individuals each received one citation and couple of warnings.

looked good, and later corn was adequate. Winter wheat looked good, but if wet conditions continue, harvesting pastures may be a problem. Some producers were able to harvest wheat due to a small window of dry weather, but much remains in fields. Cotton producers continued to wait for drier conditions to begin planting. Very few acres were planted so far. Sorghum was not looking good due to persistent wet, cooler conditions. There were

a few soybean fields planted, but they don’t look good so far. There was a lot of hay baled between rainstorms the last several weeks. Winter grasses were good this year, and bale counts were high. Cattle looked good, and there were still many stockers in pastures cleaning up winter grasses. Calves were gaining well. Wild pigs were very destructive, tearing up cemeteries, yards, pastures and hayfields. Trappers were catching high numbers of wild pigs.

CUTS AND LACERATIONS: Clean the cut well with soap and water. Apply antibiotic ointment down the wound or Vetercyan spray. If it is bleeding profusely, you will need to pack cotton down into the wound, place a layer of cotton on top and wrap tightly with vet wrap or an Ace bandage to apply pressure to. This can be left on for 2-4 hours to get the bleeding under control, then a regular bandage can be applied. stop the bleeding If the wound is a minor cut the bandage will need to be changed every 1-2 days. It is usually a good idea to have a Vet check the wound as soon as possible. Your horse may also require antibiotic treatment and Tetanus booster. HOW TO APPLY A BANDAGE 1.Apply layer of antibiotic ointment 2.Cover wound with Telfa pad 3.Wrap layer of sheet cotton over Telfa (around leg if it’s a leg wound) 4.Wrap gauze roll over sheet cotton to hold pad and cotton in place 5.Place vet wrap over gauze/cotton for secure bandage

CENTRAL Conditions were wet. Wheat harvest was good thus far with yields ranging from 50-80 bushels per acre. Corn was off to a good start and continued to grow with some terrace channels struggling due to excess water. Cotton fields started well with good soil moisture. Pastures and hay fields looked promising. Native grasses looked good. Cattle were in good body condition, and stock tanks were full. Ground temperature was slow to reach 73 degrees. Conditions were starting to dry down in some areas, and hay harvest was underway. NORTH Soil moisture was adequate to surplus in most counties. Continued storms were keeping soil moisture high. Average rainfall for the reporting period ranged from 2-6 inches. Flooded fields were reported in Hopkins County. Corn planted early

KAY LAPPEN

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.

Funeral Services for John Charles Elliott, age 65 of Bonham, TX were held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Bonham, TX, under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Rev. Stuart Courtney officiated. Interment followed at Fannin Memorial Gardens in Bonham, TX. John passed away on May 31, 2019. He was born April 18, 1954 in Amarillo, TX to Richard Louis Elliott Sr. & Charlie Mae Pointer Elliott. John Charles Elliott graced the world with his presence on April 18, 1954 to proud parents Richard L Elliott, Sr and Charlie Mae Pointer Elliott in Amarillo Texas. In 1968 after the lost of his mother at an early age of 14yrs old, JC moved to his forever home of Bonham, Texas where he would meet the love of his life Sherry L Givens. JC dated and later married Sherry on Feb. 28, 1980. John and Sherry blended their family of two daughters, Shuntai and Katina, then in 1987 they would later go on to have their rainbow baby, a daughter whom they named Shaterra. JC loved, protected and honored his family with all of his heart and soul. He worked so very hard on multiple jobs to make sure we had everything that we needed to make sure we never went without. He always made sure we were entertained and ate very well. He woke up on Saturday mornings, opened the curtains and the windows, turned on his music and made everyone in the house wake up to clean. Some of JC greatest loves were spending time with his grand kids and his brother-in-law and very best friend, Bernie. He loved cooking, fishing, gardening and watching the Dallas Cowboys! JC was the “CHEF” of the town, he would bbq for different events for friends, family and just anyone that asked for his services. He loved to fish, he actually had a pond that he stocked and would fish at often and allow friends to do so as well. His green thumb was the most immaculate of them all. He could grow anything. I am sure many of you reading this has gotten something from his garden. Last but no least, he was the Biggest, Boldest and most Loyal Dallas Cowboy fan to ever live. He was their Ride or Die...So before he left this earth he said he wanted to make a game and we made sure that his wish was granted on Christmas Eve 2017. All of these hobbies were fulfilled

daily after his retirement from the Bonham Fannin County Courthouse after 10.5 yrs of dedicated service. Where he was known by many and loved and respected by all. His journey here on earth was one well-traveled and enjoyed. God decided to pick this budding flower on Friday, May 31, 2019 at 9:21am. He fought a good fight, led by example and served this life with gratitude and joy. JC will now be with his parents, brother and other friends and family that preceded him in death. However, behind he leaves plenty of cherished memories with his devoted wife of 39 yrs, Sherry L. Elliott, his 3 children, Shuntai Palmer Woods (Charles Woods), Katina Givens-Walker (Curtis Walker), Shaterra La Vergne (Timothy La Vergne); 3 grandkids who he loved to no end, Nigal Palmer, Teagan La Vergne and Tailyn La Vergne; 2 great grandkids, Justice and Jorlyn; and 3 loving siblings Donna Elliott Smith, Melvin Dunlap, Donald Dunlap and Mildred Dickerson and so very many other family members and friends that loved and respected him for all of his giving and loving ways. He will forever be in our hearts! Poor to Unsafe Road...

Well, here it is June 4th, and there IT IS, CR 1450’s very own hood ornament. This tin horn has been sitting in the same spot for 6 months! Has not moved! Not only that but the road north of this has been neglected too and has deteriorated too, not

Corruption On The Commissioners Court I got on the internet Tuesday evening June 4, 2019, as I always do to check local and national news and events. I was blown away by the news that our County Commissioners Court voted to pay an irresponsible rancher the money she paid the wrangler because her cattle got out and were a nuisance to her neighbor(s). She claimed the Sheriff’s Office was extorting her, but she extorted the taxpayers because she didn’t maintain her fences nor did she ensure her neighbors could reach her should they need to. As I read the news about this I could not believe that the Commissioners Court usurped the legal process and abused their authority as elected officials and exposed their corruption. Commissioner Whitlock stated he wanted to see justice served yet, his vote and the vote of the court violated justice and usurped due process. Commissioner Whitlock and the other Commissioners made themselves the judge and jury in this matter and to my knowledge none of them have any legal background. Clearly, this act was planned and an inside job because

the rancher brought the media and a cheer squad. The rancher claimed that the Sheriff’s Office did not do enough to contact her. Really? The Sheriff’s Office has a finite amount of time and personnel to cover the entire county and this rancher wants to divert them to spend more time trying to get a hold of her. Can I expect the same treatment? Maybe I should have a direct line to the Sheriff and every Commissioner bypassing secretaries, and others when I want special treatment. I sympathize with the rancher but at the end of the day the blame lies on her not the wrangler, the Sheriff, or the taxpayers in Fannin County. The Rancher acted just like a bully and usurped the legal system and our Sheriff all because she didn’t do her job as a rancher. I know livestock get out, I’ve had my livestock get out. The difference is my neighbors know me and have my number and I maintain my fences. The rancher should have gone to court not the Commissioners! Libertas et Iustitia. Sam Culper

only costly to residents and visitors, but it’s now dangerous as well. But guess what taxpayers,, the courthouse is on it’s way to being pretty, we now own FANNIN Lake, or do we? We now, have to pay for it as well, land for the Justice Center, possibly using Mr. Carter’s property, is already looking to where it’s going to get the money... oddly enough our road, CR 1450 has had known issues for over a year. I’ve requested plans or budget or even a timeline, but none of that comes forward... County Commissioners are responsible for: roads, bridges, and drainage of run off...according to the laws I’ve read, anyway. I know, I’ve heard it ad nauseum, there’s a lot going on, there’s rain, there’s no money. Be patient.. CR 1450 was paved at residents’ expense in 2007. It has not been maintained properly or safely since. I don’t know about

other residents, my patience has run out. Can we not find some money to start fixing infrastructure around here. These photos are not nearly pro, but you can get the idea. Some holes are in excess of 5-6 inches deep. All within 3/10ths of a mile.. Daniel Rheaume

My Memorial Day Experience

By Edwina Lane

Another Memorial Day has come and gone!

5/21/19

Most Americans spent it like every other kicking off

the start of Summer with BBQ’s, pool parties, or trips to the lake. This year my Memorial Day was

and shared stories about Brothers that never made it home. Shawn Walked in Memory of his Friend MSG Kevin N. Morehead killed in Iraq on 12 September 2003. As they talked and I listened and learned how somber this day really is to my brother and those whom have lost a friend, brother, daughter, son, mother, or father in war. The miles ticked away and the stories continued, they reflected on their time in the service and the memories of men like Kevin and others that never made it home. For them Memorial Day is not about a BBQ or pool party, it’s about remembering those they lost. It’s about celebrating them and sharing the stories that keep the memories alive of their Brothers. As we completed our walk I learned so much about the real meaning of Memorial Day and how important it is to my brother and everyone that has lost someone in the service of our nation. I learned that our freedom is far from free! It is bought in blood, sweat, and tears. It’s about keeping the memories of those brave men and women alive by sharing the stories that so few ever will know. I learned that the bond shared by those I walked with transcends every facet of life. Memorial Day is about the Shawn Thomas with heroes that never came Samba, his service dog home. and Edwina Lane

spent with my brother Shawn Thomas in Dallas at the annual Carry The Load March. I learned first hand what this sacred day really means to him and his Brothers. We walked with the Task Force Dagger Foundation team which took its name from the first Special Forces teams that entered Afghanistan after 9/11 from the 5th Special Forces Group (A). My brother was assigned to one of those teams in the days and weeks after that tragic day. He worked with other teams and Afghan nationals resisting Taliban rule. As we walked Shawn met up with a fellow Green Beret from The Task Force Dagger Foundation. They talked about mutual friends

Getting His Dream Job: Bonhi alum Hicks promoted to head boys hoops coach

2018, Hicks applied -- but also expressed interest in being an assistant if not selected. at Bonham where he takes over a boys basketball program which under Williams won its first postseason game in school history: a 66-53 win against Gunter at Denison High School on Feb. 19 in the Region II-3A bi-district round. The Purple Warriors, who finished with their mostknown wins with 26, then exited the postseason with an 68-58 area-round loss to Dallas Madison -- the eventual Class 3A state champion for the second time in three seasons. Bonham, which made its second overall boys arearound basketball advance and first postseason since 2016 as the 10-3A runnerup, graduated six seniors off the team. Southern Arkansas signee Josh Ukpe headed the group -- he averaged 27.4 points this season, was the district most valuable player, received a Texas Association of Basketball Coaches allregion selection and finished with more than 1,000 points during his career. “We have lots of athleticism coming back,” said Hicks. “We lost a lot ... but we have [back] lots of young players who didn’t get to play due to injuries. “We will count on them,” he said. “The kids will work hard and get in the gym. “Expectations around town aren’t high, but mine are just as high.”

Continuing Her Dream: Bonhi’s Lewis extends hoops days into college at Oklahoma Wesleyan

Photo by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard BONHAM -- Head girls basketball coach Vince Morgan knew he was inheriting a determined player in Melanee Lewis when he arrived at Bonham in 2017. “One of the first things she told me when we met,” said Morgan, “was that she wanted to play at the college level.” The previous season, Lewis, as a sophomore, had earned all-district all-defensive team honors -- while playing for a Bonham squad which went winless in 11-4A

play. Two years later, the senior made her aspiration her reality. Lewis on June 3 announced that she will play women’s basketball for Oklahoma Wesleyan University at Bartlesville -- an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes school -- in the Bonham High School auxiliary gymnasium with family, coaches, friends and others in attendance. “I’m really excited and glad to get to continue my dream,” said Lewis, who also has the desire to later play profes-

sionally. She became the first Bonham player to extend her sports career into college in women’s basketball in four years. Madison Porter signed in 2015 with Neosho Community College in Kansas to play the sport, but later competed in soccer there instead. As a senior, Lewis averaged 13 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists, as she helped Bonham in 10-3A to a 3-9 finish -- equating as many district wins as the Lady Warriors had garnered in the previous four years combined. She garnered a first-team selection in 10-3A for her efforts last season, after getting an honorable mention as a junior while again playing on a winless district team in the same 11-4A against larger Dallas-suburb schools. “She is a tremendous worker and is dedicated to making herself and team better,” said Morgan. “I am happy for her and her family that she is getting to do this.” Meanwhile, Lewis has also played for an elite team outside of high school and served as a mentor, coaching younger players during camps held by the Red River Hoops Association in Windom. “She has gone from below average to above,” said Granstaff, her elite team coach for three years and director of operations for RRHA. “Her parents have come to me saying what a difference this has made for her.”

Only State champions can stop Fannin s’ball squads

By Rich Hilliard

Local districts again didn’t disappoint during the softball postseason. Including all but two Fannin County teams which fielded squads, 13-2A again proved particularly potent. Dodd City, the district’s top seed to the 1A postseason, reached the state tournament semifinals for the second time in the last three years and third in school

history. The Lady Hornets’ run ended with a 2-1 loss to eventual-champion D’Hanis on May 31. Along the way, Dodd City edged 13-2A rival Ector, 5-4, in eight innings in the Region II-1A semifinals. The Lady Eagles, the 2018 1A state runner-up, advanced to the playoffs as the 13-2A second seed to the 1A postseason. Class 2A Honey Grove, the 13-2A runner-up and No. 2 seed to the 2A postseason, reached the regional finals for the first time in school history in the sport. With a trip to the Region II-2A semifinals, Sam Rayburn, which tied for third place and advanced as the 13-2A

fourth seed, made its longest postseason run since backto-back state championship game appearances in 2012 and 2013. It took the 2A-eventualchampion, Crawford, to stop both Honey Grove and Sam Rayburn. En route, the Lady Rebels in the regional quarterfinals defeated 13-2A champion Trenton, which advanced at least that far for the seventhconsecutive time in as many trips to the postseason in the sport. Meanwhile, it took the eventual 3A champion to stop 103A third-seed Bonham, which lost in the area round to Emory Rains. Like the Lady Warriors, Rains made the drop into the smaller classification this spring after reaching the 4A semifinals in 2018.
