Thank you to the people of Fannin County for entrusting me to be your next Sheriff. I am humbled and honored to have your support. I look forward to preserving our sense of community through professional and current law enforcement methods and techniques. Together we can move forward with our county to honor our past and preserve our future. May God bless Fannin County and each of you. Our Father Our Father was a good father and he loved all of us. It did not always show on his face or in his words but we knew that he loved all of us. If one of us did something wrong or did not do what was expected of us our father would make sure that we were punished. Our father did not have much of an education but he was a hard worker and did the best that he could with the limited education he had. Our father never had a bad word to say about anyone he knew; he did not gossip about anyone. Our father's first wife and children died when he was a young man. He could not understand why God let them die at such a young age, but he finally got back with God and lived a good life. If you are one of the lucky ones to still have your father with you today, give him a big hug and tell him you are so lucky to have such a good father in your life. May God bless all fathers this Father's Day.

FC Commissioners Court – Honoring a Long-Time Local Eatery

Tuesday, June 4, 2024, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with all County Commissioners and County Judge present. The Invocation was led by Co-Pastor Terry Horn of the Solid Rock Pentecostal Church of Bonham. Pledges were led by Major James Manis, Retired. There were no

Introductions.

5. Public Forum: Fannin County Citizen Paul Ivy spoke first to publicly thank Commissioner Self for work done on CR 4935. Judge Cunning-

History, noun :

a record of significant events (such as those affecting a nation or institution) often including an explanation of their causes.

There are 132 Historical Markers in Fannin County according to the Texas Historical Commission (THC) website. Each week I will search the County and post a pic along with the Marker location and the Marker text. If you have a specific Marker you want to see in the Leader, email the pic to fcltimmeek@gmial.com “A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.”

Crockett Park

Location: West Main Street, Honey Grove

Marker Text: Named for David Crockett (1786-1836), the colorful Tennessee pioneer and congressman who rallied to cause of Texas in her war for Independence. Late in 1835, Crockett traveled by riverboat, horseback, and on foot, entering Texas along the Red River (NE of here). Camping at a site half a mile northeast of this park, he found wild bees and honey in hollow trees. In letters to family and friends, Crockett called the campsite a “Honey Grove.” It is said he told his friends he would settle here later, but in a few weeks he died in cause of freedom at the Alamo.

One of Crockett’s old friends, Tennessee surveyor Samuel A. Erwin (1786-1854), became the first settler here (1839) and first postmaster (1846). Bejamin S. Walcott, arriving in 1848, added land of his own to his wife’s legacy from James Gilmer. With Erwin as co-founder, he platted town of Honey Grove on the Gilmer grant. He also erected first stone building.

In 1885, Honey Grove had many businesses, including a weekly newspaper, “The Independent.” Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railroad reached here in 1887. A peak of 4,000 inhabitants was attained in 1890. Situated on land bought from W. J. Erwin (1919), this park provides recreation for a dynamic community.

ham spoke next to comment on open meetings, noting that public officials should give 72 hours’ notice of any meeting where government business is to be discussed and explained how inadvertently commissioners, attending the Fannin County Republican Women’s Meeting held the previous evening, began discussing governmental business. He noted how when he recognized the unintentional discussion beginning, he and Commissioner McQueen left the meeting early to prevent the error and advised caution in the future regarding the handling of transparency in government. Last to speak was Fannin County Citizen and Democratic Chair Bill Roberts who spoke to relay his thoughts on the replacement of Fannin County Clerk Tammy Biggar and how he believes the county would be best served by there being two positions to handle the duties previously handled by Ms. Biggar. Suggested was there being the position of County Clerk and a separate position created for Elections Administrator.

ROUTINE ITEMS:

6. Approve payment of bills – County Auditor: Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the bills needing to be paid totaled $346,838.16. Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed.

DISCUSSION ITEMS:

7. Discussion regarding hiring an architectural expert to advise us on architectural standards – County Judge: Judge Cunningham stated the nephew of previous County Judge, Choice Moore, was willing to help the county with the upcoming depositions that will be held as a result of the recent 202 hearing. Noting he had offered his services pro-bono; Judge Cunningham voiced his belief he should be paid for his service and expressed his opinion that the county offer no more than $2,000 for his architectural expertise. After some discussion, Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser noted he would be willing to pay for this service out of his department’s account. No action taken.

DISCUSSION, CONSIDERATION

AND ACTION ITEMS:

8. Approve Proclamation recognizing June 15, 2024 as Hickory Bar-B-Que Appreciation Day – Commissioner Precinct 3: After noting that Hickory Bar-B-Que, a business that has been a staple in Bonham for 48 years; would no longer be conducting busi-

ness as a result of a fire that destroyed the business April, 4, 2024, Judge Cunningham commented on how he personally will miss the excellent food he was accustomed to enjoying at lunch that was just a quick walk from the courthouse. Ruth Blevins and her son Phillip Blevins came to the podium along with their valued friends Laura & Tracy Lackey before Judge Cunningham commended them for their contributions to downtown Bonham with their much-appreciated Texas BBQ and began reading the proclamation designating June 15, 2024 as their special day. A photo was taken afterwards with Ruth, Phillip and members of the court.

9. Discussion, presentation and possible action regarding 2024/2025 health insurance benefits – County Judge for Jonathan Collander, Employee Benefits Consultant with TAC (Texas Associations of Counties): TAC’s Employee Benefits Consultant Jonathan Collander began his comments noting that the year 2023 had a 115% loss ratio and explained that health insurance claims for county employees were paid at $1.15 per $1.00 of premiums collected. A discussion ensued with Judge Cunningham asking if the high number of ER hospital visits could account for the increase and what options existed to rein in costs. At the conclusion of the discussion, Mr. Collander noted he would work on which options existed to present to the court by the end of the week in order to facilitate plan decisions needed by June 28, 2024. No action taken 10. Discussion and possible action to approve Memorandum of Understanding between Bois d’Arc Lake Acquisitions, LLC and Fannin County regarding upgrading of County Road 2985 in Honey Grove – County Judge: Judge Cunningham explained an objection that had been made by the Knox family before leading a discussion on how the developer had offered to maintain the road with Home Owner’s Association funds at no cost to the county or to Ms. Knox. He further noted that Ms. Knox’s letter of objection would be filed with the county’s records and that CR 2985 would be open for public usage before stating his desire for this action to be approved. Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed.

To the Editor, Living With The Good Old Boys -Recently I read a Letter to the Editor penned by our County Judge and published in this paper. I appreciate the fact that the Judge’s focus was on county roads, bridges and other infrastructure outside the city limits of Bonham. However, Fannin County residents who live in the City of Bonham experience similar lack of quality of streets, bridges, walks, etc. As those experienced by Fannin County residents outside of the City Limits. gineer, BSCE Civil Engineering, Texas A&M 1968. I practiced professionally for 45 years generally as a principal of my own firm and was licensed to practice in more than 40 states. I am appalled by the lack of applied knowledge, technique, supervision, and planning evident in the “completed” products of our city’s forces. In my opinion there is no evidence that the city has the requisite personnel and that the city personnel are not adequately trained or supervised. There does not appear to be effective oversight or accountability exercised by the City

leadership. The Judge advocates for a “PLAN.” I agree. I think that it is going to be up to the citizens of the County and City to provide that “PLAN.” I suggest a joint commission of County/ City residents be established for the purpose of formulating and executing that “PLAN.” As part of that “PLAN” we need to develop qualified and committed candidates for both commissioners and council persons, get them elected, support them, and HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.

11. Approve redo of Resolution from 10/31/2023 authorizing submission of a grant application for the Communication and Patrol Project through the Office of the Governor; authorized official listed incorrectly – County Judge: Judge Cunningham explained a correction coming from the governor’s office that was basically a request from that office to have his name listed, instead of the Sheriff’s, as “the authorized official.” After which, Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner McQueen seconding the motion which passed.

To the Editor, I would like to inform everyone how great the service was that my husband, Joe, received while in TMC Bonham Hospital. When we got him to the ER he was in bad shape. They started working with him at once. The nurses who cared for him on the second floor (room 206) did a wonderful job and checked on him every few minutes. The kitchen staff served the best meals. My husband is one that won't eat certain foods but liked theirs. Dr. Torres, ER Dr., was great, so give them a try the next time you need help like we did. They have had a bad name in the past, but since TMC has taken over, you will realize it has changed.

12. Discussion and possible action regarding GRS BESS Texas Seven tax abatement application – County Judge: Judge Cunningham first noted this was regarding a tax abatement/pilot request and explained what that entailed (tax-abatement = a tax reduction on the value of the project; pilot = an agreed upon amount to be paid to the county in lieu of being taxed). After voicing questions he has as to why the county should offer tax benefits to companies that do not provide apparent benefits to the county, Judge Cunningham noted that before tax abatements are even offered, the county should first decide where investment zones should be located. He then continued with the line of thought of “what does the county want to accommodate in the investment zones” and asked, “do we want windmills, or do we want light manufacturing plants?” After detailing how the accommodation of certain businesses only benefits those businesses and not the county, he noted the importance of taking the time to closely look at propositions in order that the county not encourage businesses that Fannin County neither needs nor wants. After his comments more discussion ensued with Commissioner McQueen then commenting on the low project valuation the battery energy storage system company listed on its application which caused him to question whether the amount, they would be willing to pay in lieu of taxes, was too low. In response to McQueen’s comment, Judge Cunningham likened Fannin County to the “Manhattan Indians being offered beads for Manhattan Island.” He concluded by reiterating that the county needs to be sure of what kind of development is wanted and how it would be

14. Courthouse repairs and litigation – County Judge: Judge Cunningham commented on the upcoming depositions and asked his Administrative Assistant Lisa Loiselle to help with the scheduling of those to be deposed. Fannin County resident Molly Hayes spoke to first ask what was being done with the county records that were water damaged in Windom with her next question involving transparency being provided to county residents in the way of an itemized budget for the work being done with the Justice Center project while asking about construction requirements.

Judge Cunningham noted he is under the impression that a final itemized budget should soon be available. Lastly, Ms. Hayes commended the work of the Fannin County Emergency Management staff and asked about Texas citizens’ rights in boating on the waters of the Red River while commenting on the dangers of cables in the waters by mining companies operating at the river’s edge.

15. Justice Center – County Judge: Rusty Deets of Bonham spoke to offer his opinion on how a previous decision to not move all the county offices to the Justice Center was not the best decision. Judge Cunningham detailed how the decision was made to stay within budget but noted it was in the plans to move most everyone once the funds become available to do so with the exception of county departments that would be located in the courthouse. Also discussed were various construction aspects of the project.

23. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner McQueen advised that Emergency Management personnel were out driving the roads to assess the condition of the roads before voicing his thanks to all in attendance.

Commissioner Self noted it was said during a morning discussion about the roads, “if it looks muddy, it is muddy so don’t go down it.” He then spoke at length about the potential of getting approval for government assistance with the rain damaged roads. He concluded by thanking everyone for their attendance and his wish to see everyone next week.

Commissioner Magness voiced his hope that everyone had a good week this week while expressing hope for a better week next week.

Commissioner Kopf wished everyone a good week but relayed frustration in the theft of barricades that were placed on a road preventing motorists from driving across a perilous bridge that had a six-foot hole in it. He noted he would give the thieves the opportunity to return them without having the theft prosecuted but advised the Sheriff has been notified. Judge Cunningham thanked everyone for their attendance before commenting on the weather and sarcastically advising “if it says its not’s going to rain, it’s going to rain.” On the upside he noted that he is saving money by not taking his car to the car wash before wishing God’s blessing on all. 24. Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 11:00 a.m.

Bonham baseball alum Tan-

ner Reaves could have made the jump this spring to playing for a defending national champion.

Just a few months after the former Purple Warrior announced he would be continuing his diamond career beyond junior college at Louisiana State University, the Tigers won the 2023 NCAA Division-I College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

His future team -- better known by its initials, LSU -- brought back to the Bayou its seventh national baseball championship and first since 2009.

But that didn't sway the 2023 National Junior College Athletic Association Division-I

All-America first-team infielder and World Series all-tournament selection -- as a freshman -- to depart Blinn College in Brenham, Texas.

"I really needed to define myself as a defender before stepping up to that level," said Reaves. "Not only that but after last year at Blinn and getting to experience Grand Junction [the host site of the NJCAA's World Series Tournament in Colorado] I knew I wanted to run it back and take care of the unfinished business that we had after last year.

"I can't say enough about the

to go with his .563 batting average during the event.

"I think after winning a national championship I understand just how hard it is to win one," said Reaves on June 2. "It taught me just how much it takes to win one of these things.

"To be the last team standing at the end," he said, "is the greatest feeling I have ever had in my time playing baseball.

"This experience will definitely help me be prepared for when we [at LSU] make a run for Omaha next year. ... [It] will help me keep cool when it comes to the big time games next year as I have an idea of how the moment feels before."

people at Blinn College from Dr. (Mary) Hensley [chancellor], to [board of trustees chairman] Jim Kolkhorst, to the coaches, and my teammates," he said. "The community makes Blinn special and I'll always have love for that town and community." He will now leave Blinn, having something in common with his future team: being a national champion.

The sophomore led Blinn's 18-hit attack with four -- two doubles, a two-run home run and an RBI single -- during the Buccaneers' 12-5 win on June 1 against Northwest Florida State to claim their first NJCAA Division-I baseball championship.

His 18 total hits, including seven doubles, during the overall eight-day tournament equated World Series records,

His desire to play college baseball for the Southeastern Conference school will factor into whether the Major League Baseball draft July 1416 at the Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth will affect his future plans.

"As far as the draft goes," said Reaves, "me and my agent haven't released any information to teams in regards of what it will take to sign.

"I am definitely open to the opportunity to sign," he said, "but LSU is a special place with a lot of special people so it would be really difficult to pass up an opportunity to play for the Tigers next year."

Recent Ector graduate Alyssa Mackey equated one -- of only nine -- players selected for the 2024 Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 1A AllState academic softball team. Mackey patrolled centerfield this spring, as the Lady Eagles resumed playing softball after a year absence and returned to the postseason with a Region II-1A quarterfinal appearance. Last month, she graduated as Ector's 2024 valedictorian.

Falcons' Cuba to play for D2 East in six-man all-star football game

Fannindel's Ke'monte Cuba will vie in the 2024 Texas Six-Man Coaches Association Division II all-star football game Saturday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls.

Cuba, Fannindel's Class of 2024 salutatorian, will compete as a member of the East squad, after earning first-team all-district selections on each side of the ball throughout his four-year high school football career. His junior and senior seasons, Cuba garnered top-team selections at running back and linebacker in the 9-1A-II awards. He earned first-team selections at fullback as a freshman and sophomore, at linebacker as a 10th grader and as a safety as a ninth grader, while competing in 10-1A-II.

Fannindel's Ke'monte Cuba (4) carries the football on Sept. 7 during a non-district home football game against Denton Calvary Academy at Bishop Field.

Dodd City Hornets' Mahar District 23-1A hoops ‘24 MVP

Savoy's Layne Steele (23) joins a teammate in defending Dodd City's Layton Vaught on Jan. 2 during District 23-1A boys' basketball at Savoy.

Dodd City senior Jaden Mahar won the Most Valuable Player honor in the All-District 23-1A boys' basketball awards for 2024.

Kalob Runnels, a Fannindel sophomore, earned the Offensive Player of the Year, with Matthew Stephens, a Dodd City junior, as the Defensive Player of the Year. Savoy sophomore Layne Steele shared the Newcomer of the Year award with senior Justin Blackwell of Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy-Fate.

First-team selections included: Ethan Barnard, Dodd City

senior; Kaleb Haggard, Ector sophomore; and Nate Van Huss, Dodd City senior. Second-team recipients were Shorty Grijalva, Ector sophomore; Layton Vaught, Dodd City senior; Josh Tinnell, Fannindel sophomore; Zack Clark, Savoy senior; and Levi Bradshaw, Savoy senior; Honorable mentions includ-

ed: Ector's Keithlen Miller, Gauge Williams; Fannindel's Edgar Lopez, Ashton Smith, Ke'monte Cuba, Lucas Moreland; Savoy's Mason Staley. Dodd City advanced as the district champion for the thirdstraight season -- and secondconsecutive as an undefeated titlist -- to its eighth-consecutive playoffs. The Hornets then

reached their third-straight regional tournament. Ector and Savoy tied with Pioneer Technology and Arts Academy of Greenville for second place at 8-6. The Eagles, the second-place seed after winning a play-in with PTAA-Greenville, advanced to their ninth postseason in the last 10 years, after 2023's rare

absence. The Cardinals, the fourth-place seed, made their first postseason trip since 2019 and only second trip -- since 1984.

Both lost in the bi-district round.

Fannindel also contended for its third-straight advance until the end of district play.

Father of cold case murder victim commits suicide in front of Fannin County Sheriff’s Office

Published: Jun. 5, 2024 at 4:09 PM CDT

FANNIN COUNTY, Texas

(KXII) - Jerry Harris, the father of a 2002 cold case murder victim in Fannin County, committed suicide outside of the Sheriff’s office on Tuesday morning.

According to Fannin County Sheriff’s Office officials, Jerry Harris shot himself in

the department’s parking lot around 9:30 a.m.

Officials said Jerry Harris left three letters behind with one addressed to Sheriff Mark Johnson.

In it, Jerry Harris wrote he was tired of fighting his health issues.

Adding suicide was his choice, and he chose the sheriff’s office as the location to make it easier for first responders.

He also wrote his decision did not have to do with his daughter, Jennifer Harris’s murder case.

However, Jerry did spend the past 22 years seeking answers to his daughter’s death.

He last spoke to News 12 in 2015.

“Well it’s a day-by-day thing, but we think of her every day, and you know it’s ongoing,” Jerry Harris said.

2015 was the same year Jerry Harris last spoke to the case’s private investigator, Jim Holloway.

“I just remember him being so sad and broken down over this that he just didn’t know who to turn to,” Holloway said, “He was just bewildered, this ate up with sadness and sorrow.”

After six days missing, Jennifer Harris’s naked body washed ashore in the Red River with her uterus removed.

Her death was ruled a homicide, but with little evidence, no one has been

charged.

Holloway wants to try the case again now that the county has a newly elected sheriff, district judge, and district attorney.

In a statement to News 12 sheriff-elect, Cody Shook wrote all cold cases will be given new reviews with modern technology.

“All families deserve closure regarding their loved ones and I look forward to having access to the cases and seeing if there are any investigative options that can be applied,” Shook said.

Holloway said closure was something Jerry Harris wanted.

“He told me one time, he said, I hope they do solve it before I die,” Holloway said.

While Jerry Harris will not see the day justice is served, those close to the case are still determined to find answers.

Oakwood Cemetery, Honey Grove

Press Release - A memorial dedication of the reinternments from the Cagle-Wilkes, Bonham, and Morgan cemeteries was held at Oakwood Cemetery, Honey Grove, on Sunday, April 12. The program, led by the North Texas Municipal Water District, offered family members and others a chance to become acquainted and to share information about those whose remains have been relocated. These were historic cemeteries, with the oldest burial in September 1846. Cody Davis, Principal Investigator/Senior Project Manager for AR Consultants, Inc., presented some interesting facts about the cemeteries and those buried there. Malinda Allison, representing the Fannin County Historical Commission and Oakwood Cemetery,

thanked NTMWD for selecting Oakwood Cemetery as the reinternment site and family members for attending the dedication.

In honor of their service to our country, flags were placed on the graves of 649 veterans in Oakwood Cemetery in order to commemorate Memorial Day. Some of these veterans died on the battlefield, and all served to protect our freedom. Pictured are the volunteers who placed the flags. From left to right are Gary Moreland and Honey Grove Volunteer Firemen Joey Rickman, Terry McCarty, Little Joey Rickman, Eric Pevey, Lance Klockgether, Clint Brown, Jeff Maroney, and Miguel Ochoa. Not pictured are Allie Morrison, Sandy Morrison, and Bill and Freida Moreland. As for the past several years, the flags were provided by National Banner. Memorials for May J. C. Week of June 5, 2024

Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Water continues to be released at the spillway. Anglers are reporting good catches of sand bass and catfish.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 8.58 feet above pool. Fishing patterns remain similar. White bass are out on the main lake humps 30-40 feet deep with a chartreuse or white slab 1-2 ounce slab with a jig tied 18 inches above for a two banger. Once you get on them, you should be able to limit them within an hour. Early in the morning fish will run in 15 feet of water on shallow points and then regroup in the deep water humps. Not a lot of surface action, but be ready to throw a 3-4.5 inch paddle tail swimbait or 3-6 inch topwater when you find some brief action.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 75 degrees; 5.74 feet above pool. Ray Roberts is open after a brief closure due to recent tornado damage. State Parks are letting people in for boat ramp use only after 8:00 a.m. Jordan Park is the only ramp open prior to 8 AM. Crappie are starting to get in a summer pattern relating to 15-25 feet on small jigs or minnows. Should be seeing some white bass up on top as the shad fry begin to grow. Tawakoni GREAT. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 2.82 feet above pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish great and is setting up on a solid summer pattern that should continue through most of the summer. The hybrid striper and white bass bite is very good. Big fish have been running humps and ledges in 15-25 feet. Live bait and swim baits are catching fish. The eating size blue catfish bite is winding down but the channel cat bite on prepared baits such as punch bait is cranking up. We are seeing limits of fish daily in 18-24 feet of water. The crappie bite is also good. Fish are solid in 8-14 feet on minnows and jigs near bridge pylons and brush piles. The largemouth bass bite is fair. The early morning frog bite has been good on newly emerged lily pads.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 2.64 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is great using live shad fishing humps in 20-30 feet of water or ledges in 40-50 feet of water. Also seeing smaller fish schooling on top near the end of Preston peninsula in the early mornings. Crappie fishing is slow using jigs and minnows on brush piles near creeks in 15-20 feet of water using electronics. Catfishing is good on the rocks and shallow stump flats in 15-20 feet of water using cut shad and prepared baits. Blue catfish are on the river ledges in 30-40 feet of water on cut shad and prepared baits. Bass fishing is slow as they continue to lower the lake levels and draw water off the banks. Top waters early in the backs of coves and soft plastics off the banks in 10-15 feet of water near stumps and brush.

sleeping in their truck. Upon questioning, both men confessed to having set out eight baited lines to catch alligators. Both men stated they were not clear on the regulations and didn’t know they were doing anything wrong. Several other violations were discovered during the investigation, including undersized catfish and no fishing and hunting licenses. All lines were picked up and no alligators were caught. Several cases are pending. Naked and Impaired On June 16, a Johnson County game warden was about to launch his patrol boat onto Lake Pat Cleburne when he observed a car parked near the boat ramp, facing the water. Being a popular area for bank fishermen, the warden approached to check for fishing compliance. Instead, he found two unclothed individuals inside the car and, in plain view, a glass pipe with an off white substance commonly used to smoke methamphetamine sitting on the center console. Both subjects were ordered to put their clothing on and were removed from the vehicle. The warden discovered various drug paraphernalia and narcotics, and arrested both individuals. The cases are pending.

Blessed Is The One That Trusts God

for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

The Psalmist, David, wrote by inspiration, “O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him” (Psalm 34:8). Throughout scriptures, we have instructions and warnings. Instructions on what we should trust and accomplish by trusting. There are also warnings about things that we should not trust in, things that will lead to disaster. We are warned not to trust in our own personal strength, but also the strength of a nation. Many are trusting in their nation to save them from enemies and destruction. Many, trust in their government to save them. Jeremiah penned these words, “As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help: in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us” (Lamentations 4:17).

Some trust in the pride of

men and even the haughtiness of society. We are told to continually make the Lord our trust. David referred to this pride as he said, “Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies” (Psalm 40:4).

The apostle Paul reminds us of the pit falls of trusting in earthy wealth, “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17).

We are to trust in the very Word of God and to rely on his teaching. The psalmist says, “Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law” (Psalm 94:12).

People can truly by happy when they follow God’s way and live their lives in accordance this the will of the Almighty. We have this message in the book of Psalms,

“Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD. Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart” (Psalm 119:1-2).

Consider what Christians can accomplish and persevere when we trust in the living God. Paul writes to a young preacher, Timothy, “For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe” (1 Timothy 4:10).

Once again, the weeping prophet encourages us with the truth concerning trust, “Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is” (Jeremiah 17:7).

May we be encouraged to enrich our lives by continually putting our trust in GOD. Psalm 84:12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee.

Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Words of Encouragement”

Hello everyone!

The Bible tells us in 1

Thessalonians 5:9-11, “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”

In this chapter, the apostle Paul focuses on encouraging others and building each other up. Both of these things are necessary in order for us, as Christians, to realize our true potential. Through our maturity in faith, we will face struggles in our lives. God uses these struggles to teach us, and shape us into what He

created us to be. We are not left to face these challenges on our own. God has given us everything that we need to stay on the straight and narrow path that leads to salvation. No matter how difficult our lives may get, with His help, and encouragement from our brothers and sisters in Christ, there is no obstacle that we cannot overcome!

I am always searching for hymns that have a powerful message in them. When I found this song, written by D.W. Whittle, in my research, I loved the message. This should really be our theme, as Christians.

“Dying with Jesus, by death reckoned mine; Living with Jesus, a new life divine;

Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine, Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine. Never a trial that he is not there, Never a burden that he doth not bear, Never a sorrow that he doth not share, Moment by moment, I’m under his care. Moment by moment I’m kept in his love; Moment by moment I’ve life from above; Looking to Jesus till glory doth shine; Moment by moment, O Lord, I am thine.”

If you are trying to find a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Bro. Josh Stevenson

Working Together, to Shine For Jesus!

Calvary Baptist Church

Bonham, Texas

What a great start to the summer for our church we are having! VBS was a complete success! The Word of God was presented to so many boys and girls. The boys and girls that attended will have positive memories of church life and church people that will most likely stick with them the rest of their lives. It was such a great joy for me to see the children having such a good time playing games, learning new music, playing the handbells, and making crafts. But most of all, and most importantly, I watched as our children soaked in the Word of God as Dawn Brewer presented it in a way the kids could really understand.

I just can’t say enough good things about the adult and youth volunteers that served in our VBS. You really shined for Jesus! The strong spirit of unity in our church prevailed all throughout the week. There was an adult present for every two children each

night. Children notice that. In the back of their minds, they will remember that there were so many adults there caring for them.

I just can’t help but tell you about my wife. After my recent hospital stay, she worked so hard in giving me care. Then, when I began to get back on my feet she poured herself into VBS with a passion. God and me are the only ones who know how many hours she put into directing, pulling people together, gathering supplies and food, decorating, and planning every detail of

Please pray for our youth and adult sponsors as they go to Lake Lavon for a week of Christian fellowship, worship, and Bible Study. Pray for safety. Pray for the Spirit of God to move mightily in the hearts of those attending! Meanwhile, “back at the ranch,” let’s be busy about Great Commission work – sharing Jesus and making disciples.

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself:

• Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others?

• Is there something I wish I could live without?

• Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control?

• Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

OBITUARIES

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.

PORTER WALLACE

Bonham- Porter was born at Allen Memorial Hospital in Bonham, Texas on March 5,1955 to Wilma Wroena Cox and Marron Charles Wallace. Charles Porter Wallace left us on June 4, 2024, headed home to rest with Jesus. When he died, he was doing what he loved most, towing trucks and teaching his grandson how to be a good man.

A memorial service was held for Mr. Wallace on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, TX, beginning at 3:00pm. Honorary Pallbearers were Bryan Wix, Carrol Brown, Paul Wallace, Sr., Paul Wallace, Jr., Kyle Wallace, and Josh Curry.

Porter was a self-made man, learning early on that you got to take care of yourself and your family, no matter what. He hasn’t had a supervisor since he was a young teenager, only once that I know of. He started and ran two businesses on his own for the last 40 plus years. Wallace Sanitation and Wallace Towing. He is well known and loved in Fannin County first, then surrounding counties as well. His grandson Calvin, brother Paul, nephew Kyle and friend Bryan all worked closely with Porter on a daily/weekly basis. We could write a book about Porter telling all the good that he has done, but there’s not enough room for all the stories here. Porter loved his family and friends with all his heart and would starve and do without in order to take care of them. We lost count on how many kiddos he loved and raised and was still helping raise. Now don’t get me wrong, Porter was no angel and the stories he told me indicated he was a handful as a teenager. The police around Bonham at that time could speak to that, because he kept them busy! Porter had great respect for and loved the Bonham people. He said he would never leave Fannin County because it was his home and Porter’s wishes will be granted. He loved to talk to people and many will miss him. Share your stories about Porter with one another crying and laughing just like you would if he was right there with you!

Porter is survived by his daughter Joanie Renee Wallace, stepchildren: Barbara Jean Fogleman, Gene Weldon Fogleman, David William Murray Fogleman, Grandchildren: Calvin Lee Wayne Wallace, Makayla Mullins, James Porter Allen Reynolds, Kaitlin Briann Colbert, Cloey Jean Starr, Matthew Allen Starr Caden Wayne Dove, Cain Lee Wayne Dove with Chazney Shiann Colbert, Georgia Lynn Colbert Wallace, Marilyn Nichole Colbert, Iris LeeAnn Piper, Eleanor Gail Piper, Patience Savanna Fogleman , Jacob William, Don Fogleman ,William Maury Fogleman, Hunter Clay Fogleman, Logan Clay Fogleman ,Christopher Allen Stockton, Jayden Stockton, and Levi James Fogleman, Sisters: Marsha Elaine Sohm, Laura Jean Preston, Patty Lynn Burns, Alice Lea Wallace, Una Mae Starr, Pamela Denise Wallace, Brothers: Paul Wayne Wallace, and Fletcher Lee Wallace along with over 100 nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Mr. Wallace is preceded in death by his parents, Wilma Wroena Cox and Marron Charles Wallace., children: Christy Gayle Wallace and Brandi Lee Wallace., children: Christy Gayle Wallace and Brandi Lee Wallace.

We all feel lost and distraught at the moment, shaking our heads, thinking “Daddy, Papaw, Brother, Uncle, Friend, and Porter, we’re NOT ready for you to go!” “Who’s going to tell us what to do, help us when we call you and love us like you do? Nobody can do those things the way you did it. The family thanks everyone who has reached out and offered your love and support. It means the world to us, and Porter would be very happy with you for doing it.

JERRY HARRIS

Jerry Harris, born February 2, 1948 in Bonham, Texas, passed away in Bonham on June 4, 2024. He was 76 years old. Due to Parkinson’s Disease and a heart ailment, his health had been rapidly failing for several years.

He was born to Leonard and Lela Harris of Lamasco, along with brothers Danny Harris and Roger Harris and sister Sandra Harris Schneider. A graduate of Bonham High School, he went to Dallas upon graduation and studied IBM computer programming and data processing for 2 years. Jerry and Alicia had two lovely daughters, Jennifer and Alyssa.

Alyssa and husband Barry Wernick gifted him with three beautiful granddaughters, Betsy (12), Alice (11), and Libby (8). He was reminded every day of all that was good in the world and that he had to live for through his daughter, Alyssa, her husband Barry, and his loving granddaughters. He never missed an opportunity to send letters, cards, gifts, and more, be it a birthday or Valentine’s Day, to remind them how much he loved them and to let them know how proud he was of all their accomplishments. His granddaughters always looked forward to spending time with “Grandpere,” dancing, singing, reading, and watching movies with him. Jerry carried his warm and sincere outlook on life which he shared willingly with people. He was indeed a true southern “gentle” man.
