Vendors Needed for Back to School Fair

Press Release - Plans are underway for the 27th annual School Supply Drive and Fair hosted by the Fannin County Children’s Center. The Children’s Center will once again be giving away free school supplies to Fannin County students on Saturday, August 5 from 9 am to noon.

This year’s event will once again include a Back-toSchool Fair. New this year is the fact that the event will happen at a different location: the Roy Floyd Community Center (Armory) at 1100 W 5th in Bonham. The Center is seeking churches, non-profits, local businesses and other organiza-

tions to set up booths inside to give away free food, resources or information that could be helpful to children, youth and families. The vendor application can be found on the agency website FanninCCC. org or by contacting Kesly at

Foundations

(903) 583-4339 or kesly@fanninccc.org. The center will also be seeking donations to make this effort possible. “As always, every contribution is appreciated and needed” said Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Children’s Center. The center will accept donations of paper, notebooks, pencils, folders and

hose, vacuum head, 18” brush, leaf net, pole, chlorine tab floater, 100sf cartridge filter, 1hp pump, a-frame ladder, test strips, Aquabug pool vacuum.

other school supplies. Barber said, “Donors can also donate cash and leave the shopping to us. We will use it to buy what is most needed and we will stretch the donation farther by using our tax-exempt status when making the purchases.”

In all, the agency has given out free school supplies to more than 13,000 students in

the last 26 years. Organizers expect to serve 600-700 students again this year. This effort depends on contributions and volunteer efforts from many generous and kind individuals, churches, businesses and other local organizations. For more information, call (903) 583-4339 or go to www.fanninccc.org.

How You Can Help Protect Workers and the Environment

(StatePoint) In an effort to better align with consumers’ values, many industries have made reforms to reduce their impact on the environment while better protecting workers. However, a new report says that for grocery stores, it’s business as usual when it comes to the way they source tuna.

The Tuna Retailer Report from Greenpeace USA, found at www.greenpeace.org, evaluated and graded the 16 largest grocery retailers in the U.S. market, looking at how careful the corporations were in ensuring that their tuna supply chains respected environmental sustainability and human rights standards. The bottom line: none of the retailers received a passing score on human rights issues or is doing enough to combat forced labor and modern slavery.

“We cannot afford slow or incremental progress when

talking about these issues –these are people’s lives,” says Mallika Talwar, senior oceans campaigner at Greenpeace USA, who notes that due to the isolated nature of deep sea fishing, workers are particularly vulnerable to mistreatment. At the same time, the retailers are making slow but steady improvements in the area of environmental sustainability, with just two of the 16 retailers scoring a passing grade in this category.

Advocates say that U.S. consumers have largely been kept in the dark about these realities and retailers continue to make profits without making changes, but that the $42.2 billion industry can chart a different course.

“America’s largest grocery retailers have the economic power to influence change through their sourcing decisions and business practices,” says Talwar.

Fannin County Leader

Deadline: Thursdays at 3:00pm 903-583-3280

According to Talwar, it’s a growing problem. Nearly 6 million metric tons of tuna are removed from the ocean every year, an amount that has increased 1000% in six decades, according to researchers from the University of British Columbia and the University of Western Australia. In 2018 alone, tuna vessels worldwide netted $11 billion, while grocery stores earned almost four times that amount from their sales of tuna products in the same year.

“We need at least one re-

tailer to step forward and lead the way on human rights in the tuna industry. One company could be all that’s needed to start a trend that would make a huge difference in the lives of thousands of workers around the world,” says Marilu Cristina Flores, senior oceans campaigner, Greenpeace USA. “Consumers can also play a role in increasing visibility of these issues. As they’ve done with clothing manufacturers and other economic sectors, they can press their retailers to source their tuna responsibly.”

This recipe is an easy one with lots of sweet and savory flavors. The perfect summer appetizer or snack!

STRAWBERRY BALSAMIC FLATBREAD

2 flatbreads

½ c. mozzarella cheese

¾ c. sliced strawberries

¼ c. balsamic vinegar fresh basil

Wash and slice strawberries. Chiffonade basil leaves. Place strawberries, basil, and balsamic vinegar in a bowl to marinate while you prepare the flatbread. Place ¼ c. of mozzarella on each flatbread. Broil in oven until slightly brown. Let cool for a few minutes. Place marinated strawberries and basil on top of the flatbread. Add more basil for a garnish if desired. Slice and serve!

Now that strawberries and basil are in season, it would be a good time to make something. I know I have a lot of basil growing right now! This also makes a very pretty presentation. Hope you will try this one!

ENJOY!!

Prayer for Fannin County

If you would like to join others in regular prayer for Fannin County, you are Welcome: 2nd Tues., 3rd Tues., 4th Tues., 5th Tues. @ Noon. Bonham Historic Depot, 1 N. Center Street, Bonham. For more info: Text Sharon Terry, 903-227-3834.

The Compassionate Character of Christ

In understanding the character of Christ, we must appreciate what He has done for humanity. When we understand the Lord’s compassion, then we can understand His expectations. Christ loved us and died for us. Paul stated that “God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). We are expected to “walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 2:10).

The Lord desires to forgive us. Jesus said that “if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither

will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15).

The expectation is for us to be “kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:32).

James gives a history lesson about Job of the Old Testament. We are told of the Lord’s mercy, “Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy” (James 5:11). Christ expects us to “love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil” (Luke 6:35).

Christ gives cheer when “they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and

Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee” (Matthew 9:2).

The expectations is for us to have cheer. Jesus told His fearful disciples “Be of good cheer” (Mark 6:50). Even in Christian persecution and tribulation we must have cheer.

The Lord said “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

The master said, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). Jesus sought to do God’s will. Even in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39).

The expectation for Christians is, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1).

Sunday Morning Re-take “A Very Special Grace”

Hello everyone!

One Bible verse that I have grown to love here in the last few years is 2 Corinthians 12:9. In verses 7-8, the apostle Paul recalls of receiving a thorn in his flesh, and asking the Lord on three occasions to remove it. He tells us in verse 9, “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” This is an example of the Grace that only our Lord, Jesus Christ, can give. We are commanded in 1 Peter 5:7 to cast all of our cares upon Him, because he cares for us. No matter what trials we face in this life, His grace will always see us through. All we have to do is to put our faith and trust in Him. Once again I am reminded of an expression that

Are

Do

Proverbs

I have used before, “Let go, and let God.”

I feel led to go in a slightly different direction this week. I remember hearing this this song many years ago, and I love the message in it. This was made popular by John Starnes back in the 1980s, and later recorded by Walt Mills. I hope that this will be a blessing to you.

“When your life is tested by some bitter trial, when Satan tries to tempt you on life’s way; when darkness truly falls across your journey, then Jesus gives a very special grace.”

“A very special grace in time of trouble, a very special grace to see you through; a very special grace to heal

your heartaches, now Jesus wants to give this special grace to you.”

If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself:

• Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others?

• Is there something I wish I could live without?

• Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control?

• Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and

DC's Mauppin All-State in T&F

Dodd City senior Lindsey

Mauppin has earned All-State recognition in track and field from the Texas Girls Coaches Association for 2023.

At the Region III-1A Meet in late April, Mauppin finished fourth as part of the Lady Hornets' 4x100 meter relay -- .02 seconds out of third place -fifth in the 300m hurdles and 10th in the long jump.

At the Area Meet, earlier in April, she won the girls' 300 hurdles and as part of the Lady Hornets' 4x100 and finished third in the 800m, fourth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump, as Dodd City finished as the girls' event runner-up.

time in the last seven years. Enter Dalton Herndon -- who from 2017-19 twice managed rival Dodd City to the 1A State softball semifinals and assisted twice with a State finalist girls' basketball team.

ECTOR -- Class 1A softball's season and May ended in concert with the annual State Tournament. Just five years ago, Ector

The Lady Eagles, who defeated rival Dodd City in the regional semifnals en route to State, followed with three-round runs the next two complete softball seasons -- 2019 and 2021 -- and a second-round advance in 2022 -the 2020 softball seasons having been curtailed, statewide, by COVID-19, just as district play had begun.

Then came not having a softball team this spring at Ector -- after the Lady Eagles, a few months earlier, missed the postseason in girls' basketball for only the second

"I've been able to see the Ector program from a far and know the kind of community they have," said Herndon, who was hired last month to be the Lady Eagles' new head coach for softball and girls' basketball. "I'm excited to go to work with the staff and administration to build it back to what it used to be.

"I think the first thing is to be consistent," he said. "We'll not fix it on Day 1, in a month or a summer. It will take a commitment from the girls, staff and community.

"We will want the girls to be a part of something bigger than themselves."

Herndon returns to Fannin County to coach, having made three stops since his departure in 2019 from Dodd City.

During the last two school years, he coached

Miller Grove boys' varsity basketball to 50-combined wins and runs to the Region III-1A quarterfinals in 2022 and area round last season. It took eventual-Statechampion Graford to stop his Hornets' three-deep run in the postseason, two years ago. Herndon, who was also the athletic director there, additionally last fall coached Miller Grove to the 1A State girls' cross country championship.

Prior to Miller Grove, he served during the 2020-21 school year as 4A Quinlan Ford's head girls' basketball coach -- twice enduring season pauses and subsequent having to play seven games in 10 days, due to COVID-19.

He left Dodd City in 2019 to make the second stop during his coaching career at 1A Saltillo, where he managed the softball team and assisted with girls' basketball.

"I'm excited to be back close," said Herndon. "I have family in Bonham and Dodd City."

Getting Ahead Fannin County Honors Spring 2023 Graduates

Press Release - On Saturday

May 27 Getting Ahead Fannin County celebrated the graduation of their spring 2023 class. Nine participants, known as investigators, completed an eyeopening 16 week workshop for people who lack resources and were recognized for their accomplishments during the ceremony. They joined forty-six others who have completed the program since 2019.

The 2023 spring graduates began their work in February with Patty Kreider facilitating their study “Getting Ahead in a Just Getting’ By World”, assisted by co-facilitator Sonya Elmore. The investigators took an indepth look at themselves and the impact of poverty in their own lives and after a period of self-reflection, they investigated poverty in our community. The session ended with each investigator creating a personal plan, based on his or her goals and dreams, to build a better future.

Shana Pless, Getting Ahead graduate, was the guest speaker for the graduation ceremony.

Pless shared how her future story has changed since completing the Getting Ahead program.

When she entered the program in 2019, Pless was living in subsidized housing and driving an unreliable vehicle. Today she is employed at the Bailey Inglish Early Childhood Center and is pursuing a teaching degree. She has purchased a home and now owns a vehicle that will take her anywhere she needs to go. She advised the graduates that they too can achieve a better future story with God’s help and use of the concepts they have learned during their participation in Getting Ahead.

As she passed the torch to the new graduates, Kimberley Ridings, graduate from the fall 2022 class, shared how the Getting Ahead class pulled her out of a period of deep apathy. She found new friends and a new outlook while completing the program. Ridings said she continues to use her Getting Ahead workbook as she reboots her life and encouraged the graduates to do the same.

Kreider and Elmore awarded each graduate a certificate and a yellow rose.

District Judge Laurie Blake was on hand to offer words of congratulations and encouragement to the graduates. Blake presented each investigator with an engraved bois d’arc pen custommade by David Keene.

Graduate Caitlin Tyree said, “The Getting Ahead program has helped me budget my income more wisely and look ahead for a better future for me and my family. I highly recom-

mend this program for others to achieve a step to a better life.”

“This program has shown me another way to live, and how to achieve goals I didn’t know how to do on my own. So, to me, reliving the past is saying no to the future!” shared Graduate Amanda Pinkston.

“The Getting Ahead program has given me a different perspective on how to be successful in life by using my time in a different way than I had done before and by using the resources available to me.” said Graduate Callie Robinson. “It’s also helped me understand code switching and being comfortable enough to be able to communicate effectively and understand different economic classes.”

Family members, friends, and community officials were in attendance to celebrate with the graduates and enjoy the reception following the ceremony.

The Getting Ahead program is for people who are living in poverty or unstable situations. It’s

about building economic stability for themselves and a better future for their communities. The idea of “getting ahead” means action and movement – getting ahead of where they are now, toward a future that they really want. The program is sponsored by District Attorney Richard Glaser, the Fannin County Ministerial Alliance and Texoma Regional Foundation. The Getting Ahead Steering Committee is very grateful for the support provided by local businesses and churches. Special thanks go to the First Presbyterian Church for use of their facility for the graduation ceremony.

Are you tired of just getting by and are you looking for a way to change your life? Getting Ahead Fannin County is currently accepting applications for their 2023 fall session, scheduled to begin in August 14 at the Bailey Inglish Early Childhood Center. “Beyond the Badge: The Work and Records of the Texas Rangers” Exhibit Now on View at Texas State Library and Archives Commission

Austin, TX – The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has today announced the opening of its latest exhibit, Beyond the Badge: The Work and Records of Texas Rangers, in the lobby gallery of the Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building in Austin. A virtual companion exhibit is also accessible on the TSLAC website at www.tsl.texas.gov/beyondthebadge.

Beyond the Badge highlights the official records and other resources about the Texas Rangers available in the State Archives. The exhibit features items dating back to the 1800s, when rangers were citizens hired on a temporary basis to protect the frontier, up to their current role as employees

of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“We are excited to invite all Texans and visitors to explore this exhibit,” said Jelain Chubb, State Archivist. “Learn where in the State Archives to find details about the 200-year history of the Texas Rangers and see many of records and photographs on public display, some for the first time.”

The Texas Rangers have been unique figures in law enforcement since 1823. Throughout their long tenure, the rangers have provided security, military, and investigative functions in Texas, often portrayed as larger-than-life in popular culture. Some of the legendary organization’s story is revealed through

the government documents, photographs, letters, and published works included in Beyond the Badge.

The exhibit will run through Feb. 15, 2024.

The State Archives regularly exhibits treasures from its collections in the lobby gallery of its flagship Zavala Building in Austin. History buffs, students, families, and tourists alike are encouraged to visit in person to see these pieces of history for themselves at 1201 Brazos Street inside the Capitol Complex from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Can’t make it to Austin? View the entire exhibit online at www.tsl. texas.gov/beyondthebadge.

Young People.” The applicants must have resided in Fannin County for the last 12 months or have attended a Fannin County school consistently for the last 12 months.

This year our two recipients were Hope Ball from Ector High School and Weston

Parr from Sam Rayburn High School.

Hope is the daughter of James and Rebecca Ball. Hope’s essay expressed her gratitude of being an American citizen. She provided practical ways that she has been able to participate in civic minded programs that involved Beta Club and FFA. She also expressed her pleasure at being able to cast her first ballot. Hope has already earned twenty-seven college hours and is planning on continuing her education to earn her nursing degree at Grayson College.

Weston Parr is the son of Dusty and Alicia Parr from Telephone. Weston provided practical advice for avenues that can stimulate young people to be involved in political activities. These included school curriculums, workshops, and community programs. Weston has been very active in the student government at his school serving as class officer for several years. He has also been successful in FFA events at the district, area and state levels. These events have enhanced a strong work ethic, knowledge base and organizational skills. Weston plans on continuing his education at West Texas A&M University where he will pursue a degree in agriculture education.

Home Country: Slim Randles Summer Evenings

Our day is filled with heat at this time of year. It commands our attention and makes our work harder. As we toil, we daydream not about love or success, but things as mundane as shade and a cool drink.

But though the oppressive heat weighs on our brains and taxes our bodies, it is the price we pay for being allowed to spend time outdoors … and it has its one singular consolation: our summer evenings.

When the sun goes down in summer, it’s romantic enough to hug a cactus.

The recipe is simple; keep the earth warm, but just bring

out the stars and a soft breeze that cools the skin. Mix this with a fulmination of little night varmint sounds of peeping and chirping and croaking. And guitars. Whether we play them ourselves or just turn on the radio, it is a perfect setting for guitars. Villalobos, Fernando Sor, Tarrega, Randy Travis, Doc Watson, Steve Cormier.

We sit in brick-paved patios with something cool and someone sweet and relax and talk about dreams, because on evenings like this, anything is possible. On nights like this, it’s difficult to decide whether

remembering evenings like this in the past is better than anticipating those to come. All we really know is that it sure is nice to be here right now. Tonight I’m going to see if I can remember all the words to “Little Joe the Wrangler” and find out if my guitar is still in tune.

DODD CITY, TEXAS 150 YEARS

Logs”

About 1840 one mile east of Dodd City in the L P Cook survey the “DODD LOGS” had their beginning. Edmund Dodd and his family moved into this area and began cutting bois d’arc trees from the land. These trees were then shaped into uniform logs for use in the construction of their cabin and out buildings. These buildings were of vital importance for the protection of themselves, food and animals. They would have stayed in a tent, covered wagan or may have simply slept under the stars until the cabin was completed.

According to W. A. Carter’s 1885 History of Fannin County, Texas, Judge J.P. Simpson states that “In 1837, when moving to the frontier there was no house from where Paris now stands until you reached the west side of Bois d’ Arc Creek.”*

Over the years their log cabin would be used as a home, post offfice, stagecoach stop/ inn and eventually evolved into a stately two story home.

Mrs. John Kincaid’s family, daughter of Edmund Dodd, who owned the property received the above Texas Historic Landmark plaque in 1965 which included the house and log buildings. The house burned in October of 1976, but the 1840 log barn and other structures on the farm surivied. After the fire, the Kincaid family donated the log barn known as a “DOG TROT” to the Fort Inglish Villiage in Bonham. These are the only buildings remaning from the original Dodd homestead and are about 183 years old. The picture above is a typical “DOG TROT” log structure in that time peroid.

The “DOG TROT” is now two separate log cabins just north and east of the visitors center as shown in the above photo. Until 2004 one cabin was used to display the tools of a typical blacksmith shop circa 1900. Much of the old equipment was donated by

the Doyle Chapman family who in the 1970s owned the the SW corner of 3rd & Bullard Street in Dodd City.

This is where James R “Jim or Pappy” Lowrey settled after moving from Sparta, TN in the 1880s. Jim ran the blacksmith shop until his death on Feb 8, 1950 while at his home on 3rd & White Oak one block east of his shop. You can see Jim’s TRAVELING FORGE and many more tools that he used while in his shop and on HOUSE CALLs when the roads were too muddy for folks to get to town. The Lowrey shop and Edward Olson’s Blacksmith shop, located on west 3rd street, just west of the First National Bank building, were the last two Blacksmith Shops in Dodd City. Mr. Olson was also Mayor from 1948-49 just before he sold his property and moved.

The above horseshoe and metal working tool were found by the authors this April while doing dirt work on the old Lowrey Blacksmith lot in Dodd City. Keep your eyes open for your Bits of History.

In 2004, Bobby Fine employees, Bonham Jr. High Shop Class, and fort volunteers with Leroy Munger’s supervision built the current blacksmith shop in the Villiage out of cedar. It is worth your time to walk back into history and see how our early pioneer families “GOT R DONE”!!

Visit Fort Inglish Village and see these “DODD LOGS” and the Blacksmith Shop.

Celebrate

Stormwater Management

Happy Father’s Day!

Stormwater is created when rain and/or snowmelt run over the top of rooftops, pavement, lawns, natural areas and on top of soil.

As it travels over the top of the ground, this stormwater can cause flooding and erosion. It can also pick up pollution (like garbage and pet waste) and transport it to

streams, lakes, and eventually to the water we treat and deliver. These pollutants can cause a number of water quality issues, including toxic algal blooms, fish kills, floating trash and debris, high levels of bacteria and odor issues.

Examples of pollutants from stormwater may include: Fertilizers, Gasoline, Grass clippings, Household cleaning chemicals, Motor Oil, Paint, Pesticides, Pet waste, Trash, Used Cigarettes.

Many of these common wastes are hazardous to the quality of our local water, the same water UTRWD treats and delivers to customers for drinking water.

Stormwater is also a growing concern in our North Texas area because of rapid development. As our population continues to grow, areas that were once natural are becoming urbanized. This process creates more impervious (hard surfaces that don’t allow infiltration) surfaces with less vegetation to soak up rainwater, leading to more stormwater reaching waterways causing greater flooding and erosion problems. More erosion leads to greater sedimentation in our lakes, which is when sediment deposits on the lake bed resulting in less water-holding capacity in the lake. As water sources such as Lewisville Lake become more polluted, more chemicals, energy and possibly more advanced treatment techniques will be required to produce safe drinking water. This may cause higher drinking water treatment costs and water bills for our customers.

Since stormwater is a growing issue for our region, Upper Trinity Regional Water District (UTRWD) has joined a local initiative to counteract these negative impacts. We are working with other neighboring communities as part of the North Central Texas Council of Governments to meet our EPA water quality requirements and monitor/regulate stormwater in our area. You can see how communities can better manage stormwater by visiting the Integrated Stormwater Management site.

We also encourage our fellow residents to take simple actions to protect our waterways and the water we drink.

Help Protect Your Water

Pick up and throw trash away. Learn more at the Trash Free Texas website.

Properly dispose of household hazardous waste like motor oil and paint through your city’s special collection program, or at a mobile collection event. For a list of items that need to be properly disposed of, visit our Household Hazardous Waste page.

Pick up your pet's poo. It's not a good fertilizer!

Sweep grass clippings and leaves back onto your lawn.

Apply fertilizers, pesticides and other outdoor chemicals according to the instructions on the label. Sweep any granules on the concrete back onto the lawn. If you can limit or eliminate the use of fertilizer by using organic fertilizer or compost, that's even better!

Use a rain barrel to capture rainfall, which is healthier for your plants anyways!

Green Stormwater Infrastructure

One effective way to manage stormwater is to mimic nature’s ability to absorb and capture rainfall. Urban communities can do this by using cost-effective green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) practices. GSI practices work by reducing the amount of stormwater that reaches the nearest waterbody by absorbing/filtering the water immediately. From small-scale parking lots to large-scale areas covering entire watersheds, the use of GSI vegetation, soils and other natural elements can decrease flooding and water quality problems.

Examples of GSI that a community can implement are: Rainwater Harvesting, Permeable Pavement, Bioswales, Rain Gardens, Urban Tree Canopy, Greenbelt and Wetland Preservation.

it possible to savor coffee or tea for as long as it takes to drink it. If Dad has ever resorted to microwaving a forgotten

morning brew, which can turn even the best drink bitter, or has simply slugged it down tepid, he will appreciate this sleek, ergonomic, easy-to-use mug. Plus, its optional spill-resistant lid means that Dad can take his cup of joe throughout his home or office, on the back deck, or wherever he would most enjoy it. Perfect for a dorm or first apartment, this makes a useful high school or college graduation gift as well. For more information, visit https://nextmug.com/.

2. A closer shave: Help Dad say goodbye to nicks and patchy facial hair. Offering a close shave, even on a dense beard, Braun’s Series 9 Pro Electric Shaver features sensors that adjust power to beard density, and a precision switch to capture tricky hair. Because its built-in sonic technology yields a more efficient shave, and its docking station automatically charges and cleans the razor, you’ll be giving Dad the gift of more time for himself in the morning.

3. Music and podcasts

on-the-go: Add entertainment and motivation to Dad’s morning workouts with comfortable, durable headphones. Just be sure to consider his needs when selecting the right pair. Whereas bone conduction headphones offer the safety of being able to hear surrounding sounds, which is great for morning jogs and commutes, air conduction offers the best shock-free comfort. Finally in-ear style headphones can isolate outside noise when it’s desired, such as at the gym. The X9-pro, allows users to switch between these three modes. It’s also completely waterproof and Bluetoothconnected, so Dad can listen to his favorite jams and podcasts, even when swimming laps at the pool. And thanks to its 32G storage, he won’t get bored with his listening options.

This Father’s Day (and graduation season) put a smile on the face of your honoree by looking for gifts that help elevate morning routines.

Goiter

This is an enlarged thyroid gland. Goiters are golf ball sized and located on the side of the throat. It is an incidental finding seen when the horse bends his neck to the side. Goiters are frequently found in horses 16 years and older. It is a benign thyroid adenoma, does not cause disease, and no treatment is necessary. Goiters are not caused by a dietary lack of iodine as in humans. Thyroid disease is rare in horses. Sometimes we check the thyroid levels in horses when we run tests for Cushings disease or equine metabolic syndrome and treat accordingly.

Melanoma

A very common skin tumor in gray horses. 80% of gray horses will develop melanomas by their teens. Melanoma is very serious in humans, but in horses it is benign and slow growing. They can be found under the tail, around the anus, on the vulva or sheath, and under the skin

in the throatlatch area. Most of the time we monitor the melanoma tumors. Treatment is dependent on the location and size of the tumor. Surgical removal or injection of an immune stimulant sanguinaria blood root extract are options. Electro pulsation with chemotherapy is another treatment. Cimetidine is used to prevent tumor reoccurrence. A vaccine to prevent further growth has had some success.

Sarcoid

This is the most common type of skin tumor in horses that affects 2% of horses worldwide. The tumors are more prone to occur on the head especially on the ears, around the eye, on the mouth. They are also found on the neck, chest, abdomen and inside hind leg. Sarcoids can also occur at the site of a wound and can be confused with proud flesh or excess granulation tissue. The skin tumor starts out as a flat gray area on the skin with no hair and may have little wart like nodules in it. It can also be a raw bleeding nodule. Sarcoids are caused by a papilloma virus and can be trans-

White bass limits are good the first hour of daylight in 1-6 feet of water using a ⅛ ounce jighead and three inch paddle tail swimbait. When that bite tapers move to main lake points in 25-35 feet of water with slabs. As an added bonus, blue catfish are starting to mix in with the sandies. Bass are good in 5-10 feet of water on main lake points with a Carolina rig. Crappie are good with many undersized catches on brush piles in 12-20 feet of water.

Tawakoni GREAT. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 0.01 feet above pool. Fishing patterns are similar this week. The hybrid striper and white bass are good on slabs and swimbaits. Fish have transitioned from schooling to relating to structure. Eater sized blue and channel catfish bite is great. Most fish are coming off of prepared bait such as punch and dip baits in 24 feet of water. Crappie are good with quality fish in decent numbers in 8-14 feet of water.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 78 degrees; 2.06 feet below pool. Striped bass are slow on artificials, but the bite is better for anglers using live bait. Bigger fish continue to bite on topwaters along the banks in the morning. When the morning bite tapers off, look for pods of threadfin shad midlake. Casting into these pockets of shad with swimbaits will land catches of stripers. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striper fishing is excellent using live bait on deep flats 65-75 feet of water with fish suspended 40-50 feet down. The shad spawn is still on, so early morning topwaters or swimbaits along rocky banks, especially where the birds are lined up. Crappie fishing is fair on paddle tail jigs and minnow suspended in the bush piles in 12-15 feet of water.

mitted by biting flies. There is also a genetic component to it where some horses (like Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods) are more susceptible. If you find the flat sarcoid on the skin, bring it to the vet for a diagnosis. Treating a Sarcoid with the wrong medications, especially iodine or fungus products, can aggravate it and cause it to grow. It is best not to “anger” it by performing a biopsy. A flat sarcoid can stay quiet for years. There are many treatment options and often it is difficult to cure. Treatments include surgical removal, laser, freezing with liquid nitrogen, chemotherapy injections or electro chemotherapy (which combines a chemotherapy injection and electric pulses into the tumor), topical ointments (such as Xterra bloodroot) and immune stimulant vaccine series. Treatment is more successful in the early stages.

INSECT ALLERGY REMINDER

Insect bite hypersensitivity allergy has started with the warm weather and emergence of flies, gnats, and no-see-em insects. The allergic horse reacts to the allergy gnat saliva proteins that cause profound itching and will soon be rubbing out their manes and tails.

Horses that rub their chest and shoulders may have a gnat or fly allergy. Prevention of insect bites is of the most importance. Fly sprays with pyrethrin don’t work well on gnats.

Deep Woods Off spray (with 40% DEET), Skin so Soft diluted (1/3 SSS to 2/3 water), or Bye Bye insects fly spray work well for gnats. Some natural fly sprays have been found to be effective. For the belly IBH Salve provides relief where flies gather and can cause raw sores. Fly sheets are very beneficial if your horse will wear one. Our clients have reported

U.S. Postal Service Releases Dog Bite National Rankings

Texas Ranks #2 on States

List in 2022 with 404 Incidents

TEXAS

● June 1, 2023 —

The U.S. Postal Service released its dog attack national rankings. Texas ranks #2 on the states list of dog attacks with 404 incidents. The city list includes three Texas cities in the top 9 – Houston at #1 with 57 incidents, Dallas at #3 with 44 incidents, and San Antonio at #9 with 32 incidents in Calendar Year 2022.

Overall, more than 5,300

Postal Service employees were attacked by dogs while delivering the mail last year.

Aggressive dog behavior is a common safety concern USPS employees face. To keep its workers safe, the organization is providing important information on how dog owners can be good stewards for safe mail delivery as part of its annual National Dog Bite Awareness Week public service campaign.

The campaign runs Sunday, June 4, through Saturday, June 10. This year’s theme is “Even

good dogs have bad days.”

Spread the news of the campaign with the hashtag #dogbiteawareness.

“When letter carriers deliver mail in our communities, dogs that are not secured or leashed can become a nemesis and unpredictable and attack,” said Leeann Theriault, USPS employee safety and health awareness manager. “Help us deliver your mail safely by keeping your dog secure and out of the way before your carrier arrives.”

Pet Owners Can Help Support Safe Mail Delivery

Mail carriers know all dogs can bite, even those perceived as nonaggressive. Dogs are generally protective of their turf and dog owners have an important responsibility to control them to ensure safe mail delivery.

Most people know the approximate time their letter carrier arrives every day. Securing your dog before the carrier approaches your property will minimize any potentially dan-

Final Notice and Public Explanation of a Proposed Activity in a 100-Year Floodplain

To: All interested Agencies, Groups and Individuals on 6/13/2023: This is to give notice that the City of Bonham has conducted an evaluation as required by Executive Order 11988, in accordance with HUD regulations at 24 CFR 55.20 Subpart C Procedures for Making Determinations on Floodplain Management and Wetlands Protection. The activity is funded under CDBG Program administered by TDA City of Bonham CDV21-0035 Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Rehabilitation project. The project includes Administrative and Engineering fees and services, to install sludge handling equipment and foundations; UV System bulbs, quartz sleeves, and wiper seals replacement; two (2) new eight-inch (8 “) gate valves; two (2) new eight-inch (8”) check valves; yard piping adjustments; improve the roads to all-weather access roads, and all other associated appurtenances. All proposed activities will occur at the City of Bonham WWTP located at the City’s western edge on the north side of Seven Oaks Road in Bonham, Fannin County, Texas. According to FEMA Panel No. 48147C0360C effective date 2/18/2011, the project shall include activities within approximately 5.0 acres of the 100-year floodplain (Zone A). The natural and beneficial functions and values of the floodplain potentially affected by the proposed activity include floodwater storage and conveyance, groundwater recharge, erosion control, surface water quality maintenance, biological productivity, fish and wildlife habitats, harvest for wild & cultivated products, recreational, educational, scientific, historic, and cultural opportunities. The City of Bonham has considered the following alternatives and mitigation measures to be taken to minimize adverse impacts and to restore and preserve natural and beneficial values: a reduction in scope, alternate locations, and no action. The scope and location of project activities were chosen based on minimum improvements necessary to correct the health and safety risks existing facilities pose to the natural and human environment. Because the project scope includes only system components most in need of repairs, the alternatives considered would preclude correction of these risks or environmental compliance violations. The best action is to proceed with the project as planned utilizing best management practices to protect improvements from flood damage. All state and local floodplain protection procedures will be followed. There shall be no significant increase to impervious surface and the project area will be restored to pre-project conditions upon completion. The City of Bonham has reevaluated the alternatives to building in the floodplain and has determined that it has no practicable alternative. Environmental files that document compliance with steps 3 through 6 of Executive Order 11988 are available for public inspection, review, and copying upon request during regular business hours at the City Hall. There are three primary purposes for this notice: (1) People who may be affected by activities in floodplains and those who have an interest in the protection of the natural environment should be given an opportunity to express their concerns and provide information about these areas; (2) An adequate public notice program can be an important public educational tool. The dissemination of information and request for public comment about floodplains can facilitate and enhance Federal efforts to reduce the risks and impacts associated with the occupancy and modification of these special areas; and (3) As a matter of fairness, when the Federal government determines it will participate in actions taking place in floodplains, it must inform those who may be put at greater or continued risk. Written comments must be received on or before 6/20/2023 by the City of Bonham at 514 Chestnut Street, Bonham, TX 75418, (903) 583-7555. Attention: H. L. Compton, Mayor. A full description of the project may also be reviewed during regular business hours at the same address. Comments may also be submitted via email to h.stockton@cityofbonham.org CC: sean.martineau@grantworks.net.

When a letter carrier comes to your home, keep dogs:

● Inside the house or behind a fence;

● Away from the door or in another room; or on a leash.

Pet owners also should remind children not to take mail directly from a letter carrier as the dog may view the carrier as a threat to the child.

Inform Yourself, See the Mail Before It Arrives

By using Informed Delivery, a free USPS service, customers can digitally preview incoming mail and packages from a computer, tablet or mobile device. More than 52 million customers have enrolled since it was launched in 2017. Sign up is at informeddelivery.usps.com. This service can help dog owners anticipate when their carrier will arrive.

“When our mail carriers are bitten, it is usually a ‘good dog’ that had not previously behaved in a menacing way,” said USPS Occupational Safety and Health Senior Director Linda DeCarlo. “In 2022, too many aggressive dogs impacted the lives of our employees while delivering the mail. Please help us reduce that number by being a responsible pet owner who secures their dog as we deliver the mail.”

The Victims

Many attacks reported by letter carriers came from dogs whose owners regularly stated, “My dog won’t bite.” Dog bites are entirely preventable. One bite is one too many.

Being Attentive While Delivering

Letter carriers are trained to observe an area where they know dogs may be present. They are taught to be alert for potentially dangerous conditions and to respect a dog’s territory.

Letter carriers are trained to:

● Not startle a dog;

● Keep their eyes on any dog;

● Never assume a dog will not bite;

● Make some noise or

rattle a fence to alert a dog if entering a yard;

● Never attempt to pet or feed a dog; and place their foot against an outward swinging door to prevent a dog from escaping.

If a dog attacks, carriers are also trained to stand their ground and protect their body by placing something between them and the dog — such as a mail satchel — and to use dog repellent, if necessary.

Even though postal officials ask customers to control their dogs, bites still happen and may result in injuries to carriers and costly medical expenses for dog owners. Please heed the above best practices to help stop dog bites and protect your mail carrier.

“Recently, I was delivering to a customer’s mailbox and was nearly bitten by their large aggressive dog,” said Swain Lowe, a letter carrier in Manassas, Virginia. “Despite the dog being behind a fence, it still managed to jump over and charge me. Thankfully, I was aware of it and remembered not to run but to turn and use my satchel as a shield to prevent what could have been a terrible bite.”

Carriers have tools to alert them to dogs on their routes. A dog alert feature on carriers’ handheld scanners can remind them of a possible dog hazard, and dog warning cards may be used during mail sorting to alert carriers to routes where a dog may interfere with delivery.

Lastly, when a carrier feels unsafe, mail service could be halted — not only for the dog owner, but for the entire neighborhood. When mail service is stopped, mail must be picked up at the Post Office. Service will not be restored until the aggressive dog is properly restrained.

2022 Dog Attack Rankings by City

The top 20 ranking are comprised of 36 cities, as some cities reported the same number of attacks. For 2022 dog attack data in your specific city or town, contact your local USPS public relations representative.

JAXON OPIE LATIMER

Rodney died May 31, 2023 after a hard-fought battle with a brain tumor and Stacy died June 1, 2023 after a 26-year battle with M.S. They married March 23, 1991 and passed into eternity together just a few hours apart.

Rodney is survived by their son Ryan Thornton Moore and mother Doris Marie Whitten and father Kenneth Earl Moore. His sister Monica Morris and brothers Brian Moore and Bradley Davis. His nephews Nicholas and Logan Moore, Micah Moore, Joshua Harrison and Matthew Davis. He also has 3 greatnephews, Braiden and Jaxson Harrison and Miles Moore and one brand new great-niece Monte Moore.

Stacy was preceded in death by her father Newman Lee Mayfield, III and step-father Billy Dale Webb and her beloved Mammaw and Pappaw, Jonnie and Bennie Gilley. She is survived by their son Ryan Thornton Moore and mother Donna Louise Webb. Her uncle Michael Gilley and cousins Jake and Josh Gilley. Two stepbrothers, Ron and Micheal Webb and a step-sister Karen White. She also has 3 special second cousins Ella, Emma and Eva.

Rodney’s need for speed was obvious from the day he was born. Delivered by his dad in the elevator of Allen Memorial Hospital.

In his pursuit of fast cars, he found himself at a street race in Dallas one evening where a beautiful young woman named Stacy pulled her Mustang up to the starting line. She won the race, and she won his heart for life. They were married March 23, 1991 and remained devoted to each other through sickness and health until the very end.

May 21, 1992 Rodney emerged from the delivery room at Baylor Hospital beaming, “We’ve got a boy!” Rodney was a dedicated father and coach for everything Ryan tried out for; T-ball through ice hockey. He was there for every game while building his resume’ as an ASE Certified Mechanic.

In 2007 he opened Rod’s Car Craft in Garland, Tx. In 2009 he built his dream shop in Wylie, Tx. where he has built award winning muscle cars for 14 years. Many in attendance today are driving cars built by Rodney Moore.

Stacy was fearless and unstoppable as a teenager and couldn’t wait to get her first car. She made a deal with her step-dad the summer after she got her driver’s license that if she got a summer job, he would match everything she saved to use for her first car. He was shocked at the end of summer when she announced she had saved $3,500. But he was a man of his word and Stacy’s first car was pretty nice! Even though she was only supposed to drive directly to and from school each day she managed to put a few hundred miles on the odometer every day. Was she really in school?

At the age of 26 Stacy was diagnosed with M.S. She promised herself she would still be walking when Ryan graduated high school. The disease took its toll throughout her life. Sometimes with temporary symptoms such as numbness in her feet and legs or loss of sight. But she fought back and tried to stay on her feet. Always doing her best to attend Ryan’s ball games and hockey games as well as his choir performances. Sadly, when graduation day arrived, she was in a wheelchair, but she was there. She was a huge sports fan, always accompanying Rodney to Rangers, Cowboys and of course her beloved Dallas Stars!

Visitation was held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, June 7, 2023 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home Bonham, TX, followed by funeral services at 1:00 pm. Pastor Ken Ussery officiated. Interment followed at Willow Wild Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Ron Salsini, Gary Case, Mark Atkison, Chris Way, Randy Dicken, and Michael “Pee Wee” Sparrow. To convey condolences or sign an online registry please visit www.coopersorrells.com.

Fannin County Retired Teachers and School Personnel Association congratulates two outstanding Fannin County teachers

Bee Kind!

Jessica Womack teaches at Honey Grove Elementary. With her grant funds she purchased an incubator, brooder, feeder, waterer, food, and an egg candler to create the experience of observing the full life cycle of a chicken for her students. Focusing on growth and development, her students understood how the structures of an organism form to meet its survival needs.

Janet McKelva will use her grant to fund field trips for kindergarten students at Finley-Oates Elementary in Bonham. Students will attend “Suessical the Musical”, a Stephen Fite concert, a coral reef program at a nearby planetarium, and a local children’s museum. Entry fees and and transportation costs will be covered for her students who are of low socioeconomic status.

Press Release - "The Fannin County Retired Teachers and School Personnel Association, which is a local chapter of Texas Retired Teachers Association, congratulates two outstanding Fannin County teachers on being the recipients of the 2023 Texas Retired Teachers Foundation Classroom Assistance grant. Each grant is $750.00 and this year only 22 educators in the state of Texas received them."
