the year get excited to be involved in a successful Field Day operation. The taste of distant
contacts in the “non-contest contest” inspires many to go for their next level license or the new observer to get licensed.
The objective of Field Day is to set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to contact as
many stations as possible while operating in abnormal situations with less-thanoptimal conditions. This combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach and technical skills in a single event. We use those skills
when we help with bike rallies, parades, museums, and fair exhibits, which are all preplanned nonemergency activities. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and is still the most popular event in ham radio.
This year, we will be set up at Lake Fannin Lodge to make contacts June 24 – 25, 2023. The club will also have an Educational Activity Bonus. We plan to make some “J-Pole” antennas, solder on PL-259 connectors, and so on. We will also have a “fox hunt” for adventurous hams who want to find the transmitter.
We invite the public to join us and check out some of the FUN things that amateur radio can do. Amateur radio is for more than the emergency situations, with contacts made to other hams in the US and those DX contacts in places like Italy, Canada.
For more information about amateur radio, check out the club website at www.k5frc. org, follow us on Facebook (K5FRC or Fannin County Amateur Radio Club). To get to the Lodge at Lake Fannin, take FM273 north from Ivanhoe to State Park Road 34. Turn left and keep right at the fork. Through the gate you are almost there. THERE WILL BE SIGNS!

Commissioner Dawn Buckingham encourages Texans to prepare pets, livestock for natural disasters
June is National Pet Preparedness Month
AUSTIN – In observance of National Pet Preparedness
Month, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is encouraging Texans to include pets and livestock in their emergency plans and build a separate emergency kit for their animals. Hurricane season began June 1, and the Texas General Land Office (GLO) continues to remind coastal and inland Texans to know their risk, purchase flood insurance, protect their home, safeguard documents, and prepare emergency supplies and an evacuation route.
“Having evacuation plans and an emergency kit ready for your animals is one less thing you have to worry about when a storm is bearing down on your community,” Commissioner Buckingham said. “Knowing they’re prepared means you’ll have more time to protect your family and home. During hurricane season, every minute counts.”
The GLO encourages all Texans to prepare for hurricane season by preparing an evacuation “go bag” for their pets, including the following:
● Each pet should have enough food and water to last them at least 3-7 days. Don’t forget to change out their food every 2 days.
Lights over Lake Bonham
Concert & Fireworks Show
● If daily medication is required for your animal, be sure to have enough for at least two weeks and store them in an airtight container. In case of any injury to your pet, be sure to include a first-aid kit. Include the animal’s health and vaccinations record book with other documents.
● Bring copies of your animal's registration papers, adoption information, or other records for each pet. Include pictures of your pets individually with you. This will help reunite you if your pet gets lost during an evacuation.
● Make sure your pet is microchipped, which provides the best chance for efficient reunification if you get separated during a disaster.
● You can begin preparing your livestock and horses for a natural disaster by maintaining an inventory, making sure animals have some type of identification, and planning evacuation arrangements.
Disasters can strike quickly. Due to our size and location, Texas is one of the most disaster-prone states with risks for hurricanes, tornados, floods, and fires. You may need to evacuate and be prepared to be gone from home for days or even weeks. Don’t ignore the risk. Protect your pets and be pet prepared.

Trenton's Davis, Ector's Trainor, Haggard share 11-2A baseball '23 superlatives
Bonham's Yarborough, Brown on 11-3A baseball first team for '23
By Rich Hilliard
Ector's Holden Trainor and Kaleb Haggard joined Trenton's Wyatt Davis in each sharing a superlative to lead Fannin County players in the All-District 11-2A baseball awards for 2023.
Trainor, a junior, shared the tri-newcomer honor with the freshman Davis and another.
Haggard equated one of two freshmen of the year award recipients in the district, after the Eagles made their secondstraight and -overall advance to the regional semifinals in baseball.
First-team selections from Fannin included Colby Hopper, Ector senior, pitcher; Nathan Harris, Ector senior, catcher; Samuel Hughes, Ector senior,
infielder; Gage Savage, Trenton senior, infielder; and Brent Bailey, Ector senior, outfielder. Second-team recipients were Zach Clark, Savoy junior, pitcher; Paxton Gonzales, Trenton sophomore, outfielder; Anthony Torres, Ector sophomore, designated hitter; and Shawn Zackery, Ector senior, utility player.
Rich Hilliard
Bonham's Darian Yarborough and Heath Brown each earned a first-team selection in the All-District 11-3A baseball awards for 2023.
Yarborough, a junior, made the top team at first base and Brown, a sophomore, did likewise in the outfield for the Warriors, who missed the postseason with a 4-8 district record -- only a game out of a season-ending tie between Blue Ridge and Bells for the fourth and final 11-3A postseason berth. Bonham split its home-and-home district meetings with the pair.
The second-team selections from Bonham included junior Hunter Dudley at second base, sophomore Cy Parker as an outfielder and senior Matthew Fortune as a utility player.
Honorable mentions from Bonham were sophomore Brae Gorman, pitcher; junior Austyn Herrington, catcher; and junior Brayden Stewart, shortstop.

Plans for the new Legend Bank branch are near-final and over the next 90 days they will be preparing to move from their current downtown branch to their temporary location at 2228 North Center Street in Bonham, next to the Legend Bank Convenience Center, at 2232 N. Center Street. Customers will be served by the same friendly bankers at the temporary location and at the Bonham Convenience Center while the new branch is under construction.
“I am proud to have served Bonham customers from this location for so many years. Our customers are so very important to us, and we are so excited to share the plans for our new full-service branch.
It will be a beautiful tribute to this community.” said Carolyn Stroud, Legend Bank Bonham
Branch Manager, AVP. “We are thankful that we will have a conveniently located temporary branch to provide the banking services they need next door to our Convenience Center.
Plus, we will be introducing new convenient banking technologies during this transition that will help our customers as well. While we look forward to our new building construction, we know change can be hard sometimes. I want to reassure customers that our bankers are here to help and make banking as easy as possible during construction. Please reach out to us if you have questions about this transition.”
The Bank has released a rendering of the new location to give Bonham customers a feeling of the planned new Bonham branch. During construction, the current branch location in downtown will be closed and the building will be demol-
ished. New branch construction will begin in that same location in downtown Bonham. The Bank will be using materials to reinforce the downtown Bonham history including brick and stonework, details, and colors that will provide extraordinary curb appeal and will complement the downtown area.
“Preserving our connection to the Bonham community and the downtown square is a priority for us as we design our new full-service location. We want our customers to be proud of the impact we are making in the downtown area to align with the revitalization work done on the Bonham courthouse,” said Garrett Amlin, Bonham Branch President, SVP. “When our new Bonham branch building is open to serve customers after construction is complete, we will be able to provide all of our banking services from our one downtown location offering customers a premiere location with lobby services for personal, business, commercial and mortgage services along with drive-thru banking, ATM and electronic banking services.”
Legend Bank will share more information as plans develop and they prepare for construction. Please check their website at https://www.legend. bank/bank-local-in-bonham for updated information. They also encourage safe deposit customers to reach out to their bankers to discuss their options during construction of the new branch.

The hearing adjourned at 8:38 a.m.

New Fossil Dig Exhibit at Northeast Texas Children's Museum
June 2023 - Earlier this month the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum opened its newest exhibit showcasing North Texas fossils like those found along the North Sulphur River and in/around the Ladonia Fossil Park. The exhibit features a multi-panel display, showcasing prehistoric sea creatures who lived in northeast Texas when much of the area was covered by a sea during the Cretaceous period, 145.5 to 65.5 million years ago. It also includes a fossil dig box brimming with casts of dinosaur teeth, prehistoric seashells and other dinosaur bones for children to discover.
“The displays and the fossil dig box work together to bring the past to life and make history real for our young visitors,” said Northeast Texas Children’s Museum Executive Director Sharline Freeman.
The exhibit is interactive and contains questions teachers can ask students, tying together similarities between prehistoric and modern-day animals. Children, teachers and parents can learn about Mosasuars, 40-foot-long aquatic reptiles that fed on fish, sharks, turtles and even other Mosasaurs, and the predatory fish Xiphactinus, which grew up to 20 feet in length and used its speed and sharp teeth to hunt prey. The new fossil dig exhibit also includes information on the Columbian Mammoth and what it takes to become a paleontologist.
One of the Exhibit Panels: Funding for the exhibit was provided by Upper Trinity Regional Water District. Technical expertise was provided by the Lake Ralph Hall Project Team, the Perot Museum, and the Ladonia Chamber of Commerce.
“We appreciate the efforts of Upper Trinity Regional Water District for making this exhibit possible,” said Freeman. “This exhibit demonstrates that Upper Trinity is not just interested in building Lake Ralph Hall, but also in the communities around the lake. The entire region will
