Family provided the following information: Dr. Spies passed away October 10, 2018. He was born in Bonham, July 19, 1925. He left substantial amounts of money and property to organizations. He had a true heart of gold. He graduated from Ladonia High School in 1942. Dr. Spies attended East Texas State University 1943-1944. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1944-1946 as a Median Tech 409 on the Army Hospital ship, Ernestine Kranda for 6 tours of duty. Upon his discharge from the Army, he attended East Texas State University, receiving a B.S. degree in chemistry. He then worked at the Nutrition Clinic for his uncle. He attended the University of Alabama in 1953, receiving his M.S. degree in Biochemistry and the School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia, receiving his D.D.S. in 1960. Dr. Spies joined the staff of Marlin, Texas VA Hospital in 1960 and later transferred to the VA Hospital in Dallas. He served 34 years as Assistant Chief in the Dental Services and 23 years as Assistant Professor of Baylor Dental Dept. of Oral Diagnosis. After his retirement from the VA in Dallas, Dr. Spies moved to Leonard to live in his parent’s home. People in Leonard knew “Doc” Spies as a very kind, generous man. He supported many different causes and organizations in Leonard and Fannin County while he was alive. He never wanted it known what he donated to help people. He used to make large donations to the Crisis Center and the Children’s Center. He liked seeing people helped with his money while he was still alive. Dr. Spies also left money and property to others.

From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17
By Bro. Bill Beasley 2 Chronicles: 7 In the 90 plus years that God has allowed me to live I have seen vast changes in most phases of life- Transportation, education, medicine, family living, morals, and the general spiritual temperature. Some are good changes, many are not. If there is a time to hold on to some “unchange-

The Changeless Word for a Changing World
ables” it is now. God’s word is unchanging. God, himself, is the same yesterday, today and forever. I want you to look with me today at a passage of scripture that has been a focus of my pastoral ministry since 1948. (2 Chronicles 7:14) I preached my first sermon as a teenager. I served churches as pastor for forty years. When I look over my pastorates, I estimate that I have delivered at least 8000 messages. Several years were spent in the VA Chaplaincy. During my studies, preaching, counseling and witnessing, I have found the Word dependable and applicable to life’s daily words. One of my favorite texts through the years has been on this passage. The writer shares with us conditions of
effective praying. The occasion was the plea to God to accept the finished temple as a place of worship. God is real and it is his request. Let’s listen. “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven I will forgive their sin and heal their land. I will be attentive to the prayers of offered in this place.” We are not dedicating a temple today but we are responsible to God for the church that He has given to us. So let us be prayer warriors. We have the same conditions to meet.

Sheriff Johnson Informs Commissioners Court on Estray Problems 5/21/19 1/3/17ers Court on May 21, 2019 and
By Sandy Hood Sheriff Mark Johnson shared information about Estray problems in Fannin County at Commissioners Court on May 28, 2019. The Sheriff addressed the court regarding an event that happened on Mother’s Day that involved Stacy Rauchwerger. Stacy addressed Commission-
again on May 28, 2019. She was very upset about having to pay almost $3,000 to get her 32 cattle back. She is a rancher who expressed that she felt like she had been extorted. In response, Sheriff Johnson addressed Commissioners Court with a few facts. He
Mobile: 903-227-0513
clearly expressed that he and his deputies are good neighbors and stewards, and over the past year, the Estray Wrangler was called less than 1% of the time when the Sheriff’s Office responded to loose livestock calls. In the last year, the Sheriff’s Office received 10,000 calls total. 964 of those calls
• Hardscapes • Tree Service and Removal • Fence Clearing • New Sod Installation • Grading • Concrete Work
were about loose livestock (that is about 80 a month) and the Estray Wrangler was called only 8 times, which is less than 1% of the time. In the last year, there were 18 accidents because of loose livestock, involving 25 people and 21 vehicles. In May 2019, the Sheriff’s Office received 30 loose livestock calls and the Estray Wrangler was called to assist 1 time. Sheriff Johnson stated that the Estray Wrangler is under contract with, and is an agent of the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Mark Johnson stated that his door is always open to talk with anyone, anytime. “If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.” The Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone who owns livestock in Fannin County to call them and report what kind of animals you have, where are they located and what is a good number to reach you in case your animals happen to get out. The Sheriff’s Office keeps a catalog of this information to better serve you. Please

take the time to register your livestock with the Sheriff’s office. This will ensure a quicker response to you as an owner and hopefully save you and your animals the trouble of having them impounded. Call Deputy C. Lemonds at the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office at 903-583-2143, extension 2012. Also, get to know your neighbors. If you have livestock, you need to know all neighbors that surround your property. Fannin County is in need of local wrangles to assist with Estray Calls. Currently, Fannin County is contracting with a wrangler from Hunt County. Fannin County has been trying to contract with Fannin County residents who can help with wrangling. If you are interested please contact Nick Tredway at the Sheriff’s Office at 903583-2143. The county is looking to work with more than 1 local wrangler, so several are needed. The Fannin County Commissioners have asked that people reporting loose livestock also
notify them, because they more than likely will know who the cattle belong to. You must first call the Sheriff’s Office though. Commissioner’s information is listed below. Precinct 1 Commissioner: Gary Whitlock - Phone: 903.965-7030 – cell 903-2271001 Precinct 2 Commissioner: A.J. Self - Phone: 903.5873455 – cell 214-952-1370 Precinct 3 Commissioner: Jerry Magness - Phone: 903.378.2941 – cell 903-2279955 Precinct 4 Commissioner: Dean Lackey - Phone: 903.583.2039 – cell 903-2271687 To read what the law states about estrays, please reference Agriculture Code, Title 6. Production, Processing, and Sale of Animal Products, Subtitle B. Livestock, Chapter 142. Estrays. Please do what you can do to help your neighbors. 80 calls on livestock a month is a lot for the Sheriff’s Office to handle.

What is Celebrate Recovery? The purpose of Celebrate Recovery is to fellowship and celebrate God’s healing power in our lives through the Eight Recovery Principles found in the Beatitudes and Christ-Centered Twelve Steps. These steps guide the recovery of those wanting to leave behind hurts, habits, and hang-ups. Examples include dependency on alcohol or drugs, low self-esteem, depression, anger, abuse, broken relationships, pornography and any other life experiences that affect our peace and joy with God. As we progress through the program we discover our personal, loving and forgiving Higher Power, Jesus Christ. In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

Hwy 82/287 Yard Sale is June 7-8
By Malinda Allison
Just a reminder that the huge US Hwy 82/287 yard sale will take place on June 7-8, Friday and Saturday. As in the past, the Honey Grove Chamber of Commerce will be promoting Honey Grove as a great place to shop that weekend. Brian Owen will once again be preparing a map showing the location of local garage sales. Thanks Brian! If you want your garage sale to be on the map, send an email to Brian@eagerlysought.com or leave a voice mail message at 903-38-3112. Local residents can also bring items to the Honey Grove Square on those two days in the back of a pickup or on a small trailer to participate in the “Junk in the Trunk” event.

Hayes Equine Horse Health Tips EMERGENCY TIP COLIC If the horse is pawing, trying to lay down, or rolling repeatedly then he is probably has colic, which can be caused by gas, an impaction, reflux, or sometimes a twisted gut. If you are at home, call the vet and have them come out or take the horse to their clinic. If you are out on a trail, at a horse show, roping, or rodeo and you can’t find a vet, you can do the following: 1. Take away all feed and hay 2. Give Banamine Paste (dose per weight of horse is marked on side of tube) of give Banamine 10cc orally. 3. Walk the horse slowly for 1 hour ( it will take about an hour for the Banamine paste to work) 4. If the horse is feeling better in 1 hour, he can have some grass and water (no feed) 5. If the horse still is exhibiting signs of discomfort and pain, Call the Vet! EMERGENCY TIP FOR THE EYE EYE INJURY If your horse has one squinting, half closed and tearing, he probably has a scratch on the cornea from a piece of weed or hay getting into the eye or a scratch from a branch. 1. Put eye ointment in affected eye every 2-3 hours 2. Give 2 grams Bute Paste (regular large horse dosage) Banamine works better on the eyes. 3. Call the vet to have the eye examined because a cornea scratch can deteriorate rapidly (in a little as 2 days) and then it becomes a race to save the eye. Remember all of these treatments are for emergency first aid only. You will still need to contact a Veterinarian as soon as possible to have the horse examined and treated properly. Some of these situations could become life threatening and will need individual care.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home “A Time to Remember”
Color Guard
Photos by Sandy Hood Article and photos by Sandy Hood Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service to the United States of America. It’s a time for us to intentionally pause from our busy lives to remember those who bravely served. It was a memorable pause, at the Memorial Day Celebration at Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans Home on Monday, May 27th. From the Posting of the Colors to the Retiring of the Colors, one could not help but be filled with gratitude for the sacrifice that courageous men and women gave to fight for the freedoms that we enjoy daily in this great nation we live in. The National Anthem was sung beautifully by Kameryn Kinard. Dr. Diego Restrepo, U.S. Army Major was the guest speaker. He served in the military for 29 years, enlisting in the Army straight out of high school. He attended Rangers School and became part of the first Ranger Battalion, first Special Forces group and National Guard 20th Special

Can we give them more than a few moments of gratitude at a ceremony? He assisted in starting Fannin Free Clinic, a free community based clinic held on Thursdays in connection with First Baptist Church Association. His passion is to help all veterans and the underserved in Fannin County. Dr. Restrepo told everyone that he lives Memorial Day every day, like many veterans. “I mourn every day for the fallen soldiers. If it was not for their sacrifice, we would not be enjoying the freedoms we have,” he said. This is a time to honor fallen brothers and sisters from all American wars. Dr. Restrepo stressed how important it is to him to fulfill a promise to a best friend that died by his side while they were serving in Iraq. “I promised to never give up, to never stop fighting and to never, not fulfill my dreams. Roll Call was led by Sergeant First Class Nark Helton, U.S. Army. Four residents from Clyde Cosper assisted, each one representing a different branch of the military. 78 names were called, representing 78 residents of Clyde Cosper that passed away since Memorial Day 2018. I will close this article with a little trivia; Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty. The Civil War was the deadliest of all America’s confrontations

of bills – County Judge for County Auditor – Commissioner Whitlock made a motion to pay the bills. Commissioner Self seconded. Motion carried. 18 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: * Commissioner Whitlock thanked everyone for attending and encouraged everyone to get to know their neighbor to help out with the livestock issue. This will make the cattle situation better. * Commissioner Self stated that there is a lot going on in Fannin County right now; Courthouse Restoration,
Justice Center, Solar Farms, Lakes, cattle being out and so forth. We are trying to do what is best for the county and what is best for everyone as a whole. * Commissioner Lackey stated that there is a lot going on and he cannot satisfy everybody and he tries to do what he thinks is right. That is all we can do. He thanked everyone for attending. Commissioner Lackey reflected on the weekend and his time at the lake. He said that he has a good friend that was one of the men on that landed on the beach at Normandy. He is 97 years old and tells stories

about that beach and that experience. Lackey shared that as he looked at the beach at the lake, he thought about the beach at Normandy and the horrific stories his friend tells and imagining what they went through so that he can be on the beach himself. Lackey said that he appreciates the stories his friend tells because there are not many left to tell these stories. He ended by thanking all veterans for the huge difference they have made for all of us. * Judge Moore referred back to the workshop that the commissioners had in April 2019, and stated that he was
the 1 person that wanted to use an old building for the Justice Center. The rest of the commissioners wanted a new building and he supports that. But, if the committee comes back stating the new building will cost $12 million dollars, then there might be a change in attitude in what we might use. At the present time we are going to go forward with a new building. Judge Moore then stated that he is so blessed and fortunate to live in the United States of America and Fannin County. He asked that we not take that for granted. He thanked everyone for being present.

Leaping 7/22/14 A Little Longer: Savoy’s Devin Smith to compete in jumping field events for ETBU

Courtesy photo By Rich Hilliard SAVOY -- Baseball has been an interest for most of the life of Savoy senior Devin Smith. Despite earning an alldistrict first-team selection at running back as a sophomore, Smith forsook football midway through high school to focus on baseball as well as his other sports at Class 1A Savoy. That concentration led to four trips to the baseball postseason while in high school -- the first coming in 2A to end a 15-year absence for Savoy and the third resulting in the school’s first 1A regional finals trip since 2001. Last February, he helped Savoy make its first boys basketball postseason advance since 1984. However, he will continue his athletic career at the next level in yet another spring
semester sport -- the field event part of track -- where he has been a State qualifier while in high school. Smith on May 28 announced he has accepted an offer to compete in the long jump, triple jump and high jump for East Texas Baptist University at Marshall, with family, coaches and others on hand to witness his decision. “As long as I get to play some type of sport in college, I’m grateful,” said Smith who last spring advanced to State and placed seventh in the 1A boys long jump -- flying to and from Austin that day in between regional quarterfinal baseball games -- after winning the Region III-1A championship in the event. In his other years in high school, he consistently advanced in the field events to regional competition and won district championships.
A plethora of medals displayed on the table where he signed with ETBU on May 28 provided a visible and tangible account of his success. “He is so physically gifted,” said second-year Savoy track and field coach Chad Tallon, “that I don’t know if he knows what he is capable of. “I think when he gets [to ETBU] -and gets to focus on his jumping,” said Tallon, “I think he has limitless possibilities as a
jumper.” A most modern method of communication from an ETBU coach launched Smith’s now landing with the track and field program at the East Texas school. “The coach texted, asking how I would like to play in college,” said Smith, “and what would he have to do to get me there.” A welcoming ensuing visit to the campus convinced Smith that ETBU was where he would continue to his athletic career. Note: Devin Smith’s decision to extend his athletic career at ETBU followed the previous path of a few others from Savoy during the last 20 years: Terry Don Lewis (baseball), Brooke McGehee (volleyball) and Lauren Cooper (cross country and track).

By Rich Hilliard ROCKWALL -- Brayden Vaught scored from third base on Zayne Kennon’s two-out single in the eighth, garnering Dodd City a 6-5 walk-off win on May 28 in the Region II-1A final -- and its first trip to State baseball since 2012. The Hornets (19-5) will play Wednesday, June 5, in the 1A state semifinals on the Dell Diamond at Round Rock at either 9 a.m. or noon against an opponent to be named. The 1A championship will be the next day at the same site at 9 a.m. “These guys impress me more and more each
game,” said first-year Dodd City baseball manager Clint Lindsey. “When adversity was staring them down and they could have given up, they battled and gave it everything they had. There is no quitting for this team. “They are a great bunch of guys,” said Lindsey, “and everyone did their part to come out on top tonight. “I am proud of them.“ Reliever Landon Allen garnered the win, allowing no hits and striking out three, as he pitched the scoreless final 1 1/3 innings. Vaught finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs and Gunnar Wilson and Kennon totaled two hits
apiece for Dodd City, which scored its six runs during the final five innings of the contest. Alec Simpson doubled and drove in one, while Kason Carson and Allen, who had an RBI, also each added a hit for the Hornets, who equaled Abbott’s 10 hits. Caleb Brian walked twice, Jason Turner did so once and each also scored a run. Aaron Munger also walked and joined Kennon with a run. Starter Dillon Jones struck out five during his 6 2/3 innings for Dodd City, a 2012 state semifinalist.

regional tournament. A second honorable mention and first-team selection in the all-district awards ensued, as the Lady Hornets became a state-tournament fixture for the remainder of her high school career. During her playing days, she helped Dodd City win a seventh-consecutive undefeated district title and make its ninth-straight postseason appearance in girls basketball. The signing completed a senior year which started for Brent with also winning the district MVP award in volleyball, as Dodd City reached the regional quarterfinals. “Kids that work this hard and earn more playing time deserve to play at the next level,” said Alex Stephenson, who serves as head coach of both sports at Dodd City. “It’s a great feeling [to see it] as a coach. “She’s never been our fastest or strongest,” said Stephenson, “but it’s her work ethic and heart. “You want the best for those type of players.” Losses were few -- and always against other State caliber and larger-school competition -- as Dodd City played in tournaments featuring such teams -- such as the 61st Annual Whataburger Tournament last December -- and made State trips. “We always played big competition,” said Brent. “It definitely helped prepare me... “I will never forget this.”
