10. Discussion and possible action regarding assisting the City of Honey Grove in the remodeling of the Volunteer Fire Department to accommodate an ambulance – Commissioner Precinct 3: After commending Commissioner Magness for all the good he has done in his precinct and wishing him well with his upcoming retirement, Honey Grove Mayor Claude Caffee led a discussion of the estimated bid range of $38,000 to $50,000 that had been received for the remodeling needed at the Honey Grove Volunteer Fire Department facility. After it was determined the cost of the remodel should be shared between all parties involved, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to pass on this for now for more research with Commissioner Kopf seconding the motion which passed.
11. 12. After some discussion where it was noted the subdivision committee and Ms. Hopkins were in approval of this action, a motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.
13. Approve increasing On Site Sewage Facilities (OSSF) permit fees – Development Services Director: Ms. Hopkins led a discussion regarding the work needed for service in this area and the current fees being charged by surrounding counties for the same work. A consensus was reached to have the following increases to come into effect beginning July 1, 2024: permit fees of $250 for conventional systems and $285 for
aerobic systems for residents are increasing to $375.00 and will be changed to the single category of “residential”; the permit fee for commercial will be changing from $420 to $550; repair and modification is changing from $110 to $150; reinspection will be $100; variance request fees will be $1,500; annual contract fee is changing from $20 to $25 and with the addition of new software for the department, installers not using online service will be charged a paper fee of $50. Approve hiring temporary contract labor to perform reviews on OSSF septic designs for Authorization to Construct (ATC) permits; $75.00 per ATC – Commissioner Precinct 2 for Development Services Director: Ms. Hopkins explained that until the department has a permanent “Designated Rep,” she believes the county would be best served by hiring Maria Ruiz on an as needed basis. 15. Approve going out for bid for rock and gravel, asphalt materials, emulsions and road oil for all Precincts – Purchasing Agent: Fannin County Purchasing Agent Edwina Lane explained how this is an annual event before Commissioner Magness made the motion to approve with Commissioner Self seconding the motion which passed.

OPEN DISCUSSION ITEMS:
Open discussion items will be passed on unless discussion requested by a member of the Court or a Citizen.
17. Subdivision Committee and Subdivision Policy –County Judge: Passed on.
18. Courthouse repairs and litigation – County Judge: Judge Cunningham first noted that approximately 80% of the electrical repairs needed at the courthouse have been completed with some work still needing to be done in the basement and other areas before commenting on the 202-hearing held last week. He advised they did receive an order that will allow them to take “the depositions of some people in ArchiTexas and people at Turner Construction.” He explained how this is being done to get information on
how a 17-million-dollar project turned into a 27-million-dollar project and stated his goal is to get the county everything that was paid for. He then spoke at length about the many hours he had spent going over records to find out what went wrong that left him with many unanswered questions (and briefly noted there “has been an FBI criminal investigation that is still ongoing”). He thanked DA Richard Glaser and Attorney Andy Garner for their help before continuing with a list of questions ranging from why a masonry contractor whose bid may have been low but was not performance bonded, was chosen, to why Commissioner Lackey pushed so hard for ArchiTexas. Two questions weighing heavily upon him are, why the architect signed off on work that was done and, “why was the architect awarded a contract to do a concept plan on a new Justice Center when the county selection committee recommended another architect?” He noted the architect was paid $119,000 for a concept plan on the Justice Center that the county doesn’t even have a copy of. He explained how he has been researching old documents and records involving the project in an effort to find out “what was our ex-County Judge Spanky Carter’s connection to BryCo?” He noted he found out about the deficient electrical work in the courthouse from Kenny, the previous Facilities Management Coordinator who alerted him to the shoddy work that existed before retiring from his position which resulted in the hiring of the current Facilities Management Coordinator Ruben Moreno (who happened to be an apprentice electrician and confirmed the existence of the then serious electrical problems). After commenting about the additional $500,000 worth of electrical repairs that was done after the state became involved (at no cost to the county), he concluded his comments by noting that “he wants this courthouse to be done right and he wants the Justice Center to be done right.”
19. Justice Center – County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted a meeting was being held on this day.
20. County budget and revenue sources – County Judge: Judge Cunningham touched briefly on efforts being made to bring in more interest revenue and the prospect of the sale of county property.
21. Water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Commissioner Kopf spoke briefly about future meetings with the cities of Trenton, Ladonia and Upper Trinity.
22. Fannin County road issues – County Judge: No significant updates.
23. Solar and wind farms –County Judge Fannin: Judge Cunningham reiterated his stance to not be accommodating these businesses with tax rebates.

Voices of Veterans: Military Intelligence Officer Robert Hoch Shares
His Story of
Mr. Hoch helped the Vietnamese Special Police carry out crucial missions
AUSTIN — Today, Texas
Land Commissioner and Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is proud to introduce the next installment of the series highlighting the VLB's Voices of Veterans oral history program. In this episode, we hear the story of U.S. Army Veteran Robert Hoch.
Mr. Hoch's family moved to San Antonio when he was young. His father served in three wars, including World War II. His two brothers also served in the military, and all three brothers served in Vietnam.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1967 and trained at Fort Sill in Oklahoma before being sent to Vietnam in November 1968. Mr.

Service During the Vietnam War
Hoch remembered the oppressive heat that greeted him when he arrived in Vietnam and stated that the climate felt "like a furnace." He served as a Military Intelligence Officer and worked as an advisor to the Vietnamese Special Police. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Honor Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam National Police Honor Medal for his service.
Mr. Hoch spoke about carrying out missions with the Chief of Police, Mr. My, and building a friendship with him while getting to know the Vietnamese people. Tragically, just 30 days after Mr. Hoch left Vietnam, Mr. My was killed.
Mr. Hoch revealed that he was deeply affected by the hostility some Vietnam Veterans faced from American civilians after returning from the war. How-
ever, he expressed that much of his pain was healed after participating in the 2018 Veterans Day Parade in Fredericksburg.
He recounted how people lined the street, three to five deep, to celebrate the Veterans and thank them for their service.
When asked what advice he would give to future generations, Mr. Hoch talked about navigating the circumstances we face every day while trying to accomplish our goals, saying, "Your mission on earth is to address these circumstances the best you can and see where you fall at the end of the day… Don’t try to write the script."

The VLB records interviews with veterans over the phone or in person. Their interviews are then permanently archived in the Office of Veterans Records at the GLO, where they join the historical documents of other Texas heroes such as Sam Houston, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and William Barret Travis. Veterans' interviews are also available to researchers, historians, genealogists, and the public. These precious records inspire future generations and remind us of our Veterans' sacrifices.

followed by a picnic lunch for all and an awards ceremony for the kids. The Bonham Fire Department will have a truck to show and Lone Star Law star and Fannin County Game Warden, Randolph McGee will be on hand to honorarily deputize each child. Volunteer boaters will be taking the kids boating and fishing from 8 am to 11:30 am. Each child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian on the boat. If boat space allows, additional siblings and family members may be able to go boating as well. However, only participants and one parent or guardian are guaranteed to go boating at the event. We need volunteer boaters and corporate sponsors! Colton's College Choice: Trenton's Gray to join teammate, continue football days at SAGU
By Rich Hilliard
TRENTON -- Colton Gray admits he's not strictly a northsouth runner.
The Trenton running back says he will go the other two directions while carrying a football.
That approach has worked for him -- he finished his career as the school's leading rusher and scorer.
The senior had thought he was headed elsewhere north to continue his career in the sport.
But his realization of an undelivered e-mail -- and a successful attempt afterward to make contact -- led to a welcome chance instead to continue playing alongside a teammate after graduation.
Gray announced on May 21 at a signing ceremony in the Trenton high school library his decision to play running back for Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Waxahachie.
His announcement occurred two months to the day after Trenton quarterback Micah Wommack's SAGU signing ceremony.
"I'm excited. I get to still play with my quarterback," said Gray. "Colton's a special young man," said Trenton head football coach Josh Shipman. "I'm proud of what he is accomplishing with this."
"We're proud of him," said Darren Anderson, Trenton's high school principal and a former head football coach himself elsewhere. "We know he'll carry that Trenton name with him."
As Trenton this decade has become a postseason constant and achieved program mile-
stones in the sport, Gray simultaneously gained increasing all-district recognition.
In 2020, as a freshman, he garnered a second-team offense running back selection in District 5-2A-I, as Trenton (4-5, 2-3) reached its secondstraight and overall football postseason. The Tigers won two district games in a single season for the first time since
their 2012 varsity restart to claim the fourth and final district postseason berth.
In 2021, Gray garnered 5-2A-I's offensive most valuable player honor, as Trenton, with another the bi-district advance via a fourth-place finish, reached a thirdstraight postseason. The Tigers' five wins that season achieved their most since the 2012 varsity football restart at the school and since 1933 in the overall history there of the sport -- which includes a hiatus from it from 1960-2011.
In 2022, Gray earned first-team notoriety on both sides of the ball in 6-2AI -- on defense at safety and unanimously at running back on offense. Trenton that season tied for the district's final post-
LT hoops' Nix Wayland Bapt. bound
By Rich Hilliard
Leonard senior guard Brett Nix agreed on May 21 to extend his basketball career with Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas. Nix, who received all-state selections on and off the courts during his high school career, helped the Tigers return to the playoffs this winter after a year absence with an area-round advance -- including an upset of District 12-3A champion Lone Oak in the bi-district round -- after qualifying via 11-3A's fourth-and-final postseason berth. He earned the Offensive Most Valuable Player honor in the 11-3A boys' basketball awards for 2024.
As a junior, he helped neighboring Wolfe City in 2023 advance to the Region II-2A semifinals. Nix earned the 14-2A MVP award that season.
As a sophomore, Nix helped Leonard in 2022 reach its first regional quarterfinal appearance and win its first district title in boys' basketball since 1998. He earned the MVP award in the 11-3A boys' basketball honors for that season.

season berth with then Class 2A-newcomer Whitewright at 2-3, but lost a tiebreaker and missed the playoffs. The Tigers again won five games.
In 2023, he earned the Utility Player of the Year in 6-2A-I from which the Tigers (4-7, 1-4) returned to the bi-district round as the district's the fourth-place qualifier -- Trenton's fourth postseason and bidistrict advance in the last five years.
"He's the only player in school history to win a District [football] superlative -- and he has won two of them," said Shipman. "Both were welldeserved.
"He's been our team most valuable player two of the last three years," said the coach. "We'll have big shoes to fill."
Note: Colton Gray made 10 interceptions -- four returned for touchdowns -- during his last two seasons, according to Trenton head football coach Josh Shipman.

Fannin County Biblical Round Table
It’s been about three months since the last round table meeting. The last round table meeting topic was, the inerrancy of scripture. We had about forty people, and the round table members were very knowledgeable and prepared. It was an enjoyable meeting to say the least.
The next round table meeting will be on the book of John. This roundtable meeting will be the 1st of 3 roundtable meetings on the book of John.
We had a lot of great suggestions on how to make the roundtable even better. Please keep the suggestions coming. Format will be the same, with the exception that Q&A will be extended. Seating will modified to make the visual experience the best it can be.
NOTICE: THE MAY 23RD ROUND TABLE HAS BEEN POSTPONED. CHECK THE FAITH PAGE EACH WEEK FOR FURTHER UPDATES! Joe Moore Jpmoorejpm@gmail.com 903 815 8136
A City Which Hath Foundations
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Heaven seems to be a myth to much of the population of the United States of America.
A nation that claimed, at one time, to be a Christian nation, founding most of its laws and government upon Biblical principles, now, does not appear to consider the Bible or Heaven in the times and lives of its citizens. The greater part of our society lives with little care about divine principles and regulations, of right and wrong, and of eternal reward or punishment.
It is said of Abraham, that “he looked for a city which hath foundations,” (Hebrews
11:10). This passage obviously refers to heaven, the dwelling place of God. Heaven is not make-believe or a myth. It is and has been the dwelling place of God for time beyond man. We pray to God ‘in heaven his dwelling place’ and God ‘hears us in heaven his dwelling place’ (1 Kings 8:30, 39).
Abraham was not looking for a mythical place nor a makebelieve place, but instead, he was looking for heaven as a reward for all his labors. Abraham was faithful to God and had the “hope which is laid up for you in heaven” (Colossians 1:5) and lived with his ‘conversation in heaven’ (Philippians 3:20).
We must also look for that “city which hath foundations”
(Hebrews 11:10). Christ has gone ‘to prepare a place for us’ (John 14:2) and the place that is prepared in heaven is “an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away” (1 Peter 1:4). For Jesus “who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God” (1 Peter 3:22) will one day come “from heaven with his mighty angels” (2Thessalonians 1:7) to “reward every man according to his works” (Matthew 16:27).
If we are obedient then ‘great will be our reward in heaven’ (Matthew 5:12). Heaven is the reality that will come to the faithful as sure as the heavens and earth were created (Genesis 1:1).
Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Keep On Keeping On”
Hello everyone!
Are You A Christian?
Do you serve God?
Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.
In 1 Thessalonians chapter 2, the apostle Paul is recalling his ministry at Thessalonica. He had been mistreated in Philippi, but he didn’t let his suffering keep him from going to Thessalonica to declare the gospel. His determination to share the gospel, despite the persecution he faced, showed that he had no ulterior motives, such as money, or his own vain glory, in mind. God had entrusted him with the gospel, and he was truly devoted to that trust. Like the apostle Paul, God has entrusted us with the gospel, and we also must be fully devoted to that trust, and spread the gospel any way that we possibly can, despite the persecution that we will face. As I’ve said before, even though some may not
Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
be receptive to it, but if just one person is receptive to our message, then our efforts will not go in vain.
In 1843, Horatius Bonar wrote this classic hymn that encourages us to keep on keeping on in our efforts to spread the gospel message.
Don't Like Religion?
“Go, labor on; spend, and be spent, thy joy to do the Father’s will; it is the way the Master went; should not the servant tread it still?
Go, labor on; ‘tis not for naught; thine earthly loss is heavenly gain; men heed thee, love thee, praise thee not; the Master praises- what are men?
to win; go forth into the world’s highway, compel the wanderer to come in.”
If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Aylett Hawes, a doctor’s wife in New York City, got a burden for children who were just playing in the streets all summer. She decided to start an Everyday Bible School for children to get them off the streets and learning more about God’s Word. She rented a beer hall in the city’s East Side to conduct. It lasted four weeks that summer! And so, Vacation Bible School began!
I have fond memories of VBS as a child. My mother
I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn't, than live as if there isn't and to die to find out that there is. include and make time for GOD this Sunday
was the director. I remember making the crafts, drinking Kool Aid and eating cookies, and playing the games just like it was yesterday. I’m sure I didn’t realize it at the time, but God’s Word was being implanted in my heart and soul that still affects me today. Please pray with me that children would be forever affected by the teaching of God’s Word this very week at our Vacation Bible School!
Yours for Broken Chains, Lyn and Lissa
Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. The Gavels Made from the Wood of Fannin County’s First Courthouse

floor to be dressed, and a wooden chimney, two doors and four windows of 12 lights, with shutters; one flight of stairs, the upper apartment to be divided into two rooms of equal size and one alley; to be covered with good oak boards three feet long nailed to good rafters with one foot to the weather; to have a shed room at the opposite end from the chimney fifteen feet wide which is to be of the same material and covered in the same manner as the body of the building; to have a good rough floor, with a door and window in each end of it and each end of said shed room to have a small wooden chimney; all to be furnished with a Judge's bench with sufficient room for commissioner's court, a bar ten feet long and four benches with backs eight feet long, a clerk’s table with a large drawer and a lock and key."
In June 1924 the re-
mains of the old court house were moved to Bonham and placed on the court house lawn. Walter Bales, house mover, had agreed to move it to Bonham for what it would cost to load it, about $20. The cost to rebuild it was estimated at $500 given its condition. It was noted in the Bonham Daily Favorite in 1924 that “there are few, if any, other buildings in this part of the state that were built while Texas was an independent municipality and under the flag of a republic.”
Several ideas were put forth on where to move and restore it. Some wanted it on the Courthouse Square, some at Simpson Park, Woodman Park or the old Pace Graveyard/Park just east of the Texas & Pacific Depot.
In November 1924 the “timbers” were removed from the Court House
lawn to the jail yard, one block east of the court house square. I have been unable to date to find anything more about the “timbers.”
In 1950 W. A. Barr presented to County Judge Choice Moore, District Judge Albert Broadfoot and Speaker of U.S. House of Representatives Sam Rayburn gavels made from a log from the old Courthouse. A newspaper article states that Sam Rayburn used his gavel at the U.S. House of Representatives during an address by the President of France.
How did W. A. Barr obtain the log(s) to make the gavels for Judge Choice Moore, Judge Broadfoot and Sam Rayburn in 1950? Mr. Barr had been a member of the Constantine Lodge for 63 years and had worked for the Bonham City Water Department for 25 years. Perhaps the logs had at some point been moved to City property.
We are so pleased that a small part of Fannin County’s early history is retained in the gavel given to the County by the family of Choice Moore and in the gavel given to Sam Rayburn which is at the Rayburn Library and Museum.
The Choice Moore gavel will be placed in the display case on the second floor of the Courthouse. Come and see it!

On Tuesday, May 14, relatives of former Fannin County Judge Choice Moore presented the County with a gavel made from a log from the first Fannin County Courthouse, which was built at Warren near Red River in 1839, during the Republic of Texas times. Here is the backstory: In 1838 the Fannin County Commissioners Court met for the first time near Red River in Jacob Black’s cabin, the exact location of which is unknown. Arrangements were made to build a courthouse at old Warren. The specifications for this new structure were as follows: "a post oak or cedar log body 18 x 24 feet, one and one half stories high, the lower floor of rough plank, the upper

Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Water continues to be released at the spillway. Anglers are reporting good catches of sand bass and catfish.
Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 76 degrees; 0.48 feet above pool. The morning bass bite is good for the first of hours of the day then slows on buzz baits, frogs, and swimbaits around shallow grass. Then switch to shaky heads along the edge of grass or bream beds in 3-5 feet. The offshore bites comes into play on bright and sunny days with big worms Texas rigged or Carolina rigs in 15-18 feet. Crankbaits over deeper water are slow but improving. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 4.07 feet above pool. White bass are out on the main lake humps 3040 feet deep with a chartreuse or white slab 1-2 ounce slab with a jig tied 18 inches above for a two banger. Once you get on them, you should be able to limit within an hour. Early in the morning fish will run in 15 feet of water on shallow points and then regroup in the deep water humps. Not a lot of surface action, but be ready to throw a 3-4.5 inch paddle tail swimbait or 3-6 inch topwater when you find some brief action.
Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 75 degrees; 3.55 feet above pool. As of Sunday the lake and state parks are shut down due to the tornado damage. Fishing prior to that had been excellent. White bass were biting live bait and slabs 30-55 feet of water on the banks at daylight day to day. Should start seeing some schooling fish on top roaming around as the shad begin to hatch. Corp piles are starting to hold some crappie 20-30 feet hitting minnows or brighter jigs. Catfishing should be excellent in the creeks with all the prior and future rain forecasted. Tawakoni GREAT. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 0.96 feet above pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish great and is setting up on a solid summer pattern that should continue through most of the summer. The hybrid striper and white bass bite is very good. Big fish have been running humps and ledges in 15-25 feet. Live bait and swim baits are catching fish. The eating size blue catfish bite is winding down but the channel cat bite on prepared baits such as punch bait is cranking up. We are seeing limits of fish daily in 18-24 feet of water. The crappie bite is also good. Fish are solid in 8-14 feet on minnows and jigs near bridge pylons and brush piles. The largemouth bass bite is fair. The early morning frog bite has been good on newly emerged lily pads. Square bill crankbaits are also catching fish in 1-4 feet on the edges of rip wrap and dock pylons.
Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 2.82 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is good on live bait fishing ledges and humps in 25-40 feet of water. Also still seeing suspended fish in 70-90 feet of water. Topwaters are working early along rocky banks and the backs of coves on the east and southern ends of the lake. Crappie are good on jigs and live minnows on structure and docks in 15-20 feet of water. Slow lift and sometimes adding a crappie nibble fish are hitting suspended through the brush. Catfish are good on cut shad and prepared baits. Blues are plentiful on deep flats in 40-60 feet of water and along the rocks for channels in 15-30 feet of water. Bass are fair on top waters early on points and in the backs of coves at daylight. Water is stained everywhere but less on the southern end of the lake.
Texas Game Wardens See Reduction in Boating Accidents, Rise in Drownings During Memorial Day Weekend
AUSTIN – This past Memorial Day weekend, Texas Game Wardens patrolled Texas’ many waterbodies and assisted fellow first responders with rescues and recoveries due to strong storms and extreme heat. Wardens noted a decrease in boating incidents and citations filed, but an increase in drownings and warnings issued.
Between Friday and Monday, 379 game wardens conducted 11,609 vessel checks across Texas, issuing 1,528 citations and 2,301 warnings for various boating safety law violations. Wardens arrested 37 people for boating while intoxicated
(BWI) and four people for driving while intoxicated (DWI). Additionally, another 55 people were arrested for various other crimes.
Due to recent legislative changes, one BWI arrest classified as a state jail felony for boating while intoxicated with a child passenger. During the 88th session, the Texas Legislature approved changes to BWI statutes, making a BWI with a child under the age of 15 on board a state jail felony, matching the charges for DWI with a child passenger. This new law went into effect Sept. 1, 2023. This charge is punishable by six months to two years
254.482.0935
in state jail and a maximum $10,000 fine.
“I am pleased to see that game wardens’ efforts to keep the public safe on the water are making an impact and saving lives through a reduction in the numbers of boating accident and boating related fatalities,” said Cody Jones, Texas Game Warden assistant commander for marine enforcement. “But we can’t let our guard down. The Texas heat drove people to cool off at area waterways, leading to a marked increase in open water drownings from the previous year’s Memorial Day weekend holiday.”
Game wardens responded to seven boating accidents, one boating fatality and seven drownings. The boating fatality occurred at Taylor Bayou and the drownings occurred at Benbrook Lake, Lake Bridgeport, Canyon Lake, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Lewisville, Sabine Lake and Lake Texoma.
“I am proud of the hard work and dedication Texas Game Wardens put in to ensure the safety of the people of Texas over the course of the holiday weekend,” said Col. Chad Jones, Texas Parks and Wild-

life Department (TPWD) law enforcement director. “However, boating and water safety is a priority for wardens every day, not just during a holiday. Wardens will continue to assist and educate the public while enforcing the laws of this state to ensure those recreating on Texas waterways return home safely at the end of the day.”
On more than one occasion, game wardens were involved in search and rescue activities, responded to boating incidents and engaged numerous people on personal watercrafts, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards who were not wearing life jackets.
“A number of water safety incidents over the holiday weekend could have been avoided by people wearing life jackets and taking boater education,” said Kimberly Sorensen, TPWD boating education manager.
Sorensen and her team hosted educational outreach programs at Lake Lyndon B. Johnson and Lavon Lake, reminding boaters of proper safety equipment and safe boating practices.
In addition to the many water safety inspections over the weekend, game wardens were involved with medical emergencies, boat assists, an overturned vessel, tornado response efforts, broke up multiple fights that resulted in several arrests, collaborated with partner agencies and more. Wardens also assisted the Marine Theft Investigation Unit with party boat enforcement on Lake Travis, boarding eight party boats, with seven having violations. Even though Memorial Day Weekend is considered the unofficial start to boating season, it doesn’t mean other outdoor pursuits across the state come to an end. Wardens in East Texas apprehended multiple subjects cast netting white bass behind Lake Livingston Dam, netting 137 fish illegally taken. In South Texas, wardens seized six illegal hoop nets from Falcon Lake, and along the coast, wardens conducting a standard fishing check arrested an individual with an open warrant.

Melvin Hampton McEuen
Fri, May 24, 2024
In loving memory of Melvin H. McEuen, who passed away on May 16, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. Born February 18, 1943 in Ivanhoe, TX to parents Luther McEuen and Opal (Roberson) McEuen, he was one of seven children.
He was a proud veteran, having served four years in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He carried his communications training over to civilian life, and had a 30-year career as a PBX technician for GTE/Verizon. Additionally, he was an accomplished mechanic and a certified HVAC technician.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy (Teeson) McEuen, with whom he raised five sons: Richard, Bobby, Melvin, David, and Kevin. He is also survived by his daughter Doris Jean Looney from a previous marriage. And while he took great pride in the other roles he served during his life, it was as a husband and father where he really excelled, and which gave him the greatest joy. He specifically referred to “getting your mother to marry me” as his greatest accomplishment.
He was alternately known as “Dad” or “Pops”, not just to his boys, but to the multitude of friends who frequented the McEuen household during the boys’ teenage years. In most cases, it was just a sign of respect for someone willing to be a secondary parental presence in their lives; in other cases, he filled a gap for kids whose primary parental presence may have been missing or just had a home life that was not ideal. In several cases, he and Judy welcomed them to move into the house for as long as needed to get their personal situations worked out. Most importantly, they loved them all like their own.
In addition to his wife, sons and daughter, he is survived by two sisters, Cheryl Ann Workman and Donna Smith, three daughters-in-law (Jennifer, Belinda, and Mindy), seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Luther “Luke” McEuen and Kenneth Ray McEuen, and two sisters, Juanita Seale and Earlene Dietsche.
Services were held on Wednesday, May 22nd at 1:00 at Allen Funeral Home in Wylie, with graveside services following.

In 1948, Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn played a key role in the establishment of the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Bonham, with the aim of improving services for veterans in northeast Texas. It is with great respect for our veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice that the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce has chosen to honor them on these grounds. This location is easily accessible for residents of the VA Nursing Home and the nearby Clyde W. Cosper State Veterans Home.
