Trans Cable Int’l - Growth of an Industry in Bonham
By Rose Schwartz
Everybody loves a good American success story as do I but being a native Texan I especially love a good Texas success story. And, successful is the best way to describe the happenings at Trans Cable in Bonham. Having begun its operation in April 2013, this year marks the ninth anniversary of the cable manufacturing/distribution company. Providing the cable needed for data communication used for internet, low voltage lighting, entry controls, etc., Trans Cable is an upand-coming cable company that services its clients as near as the Plano Rockwall area to as far away as Canada. Carlos Medina, the COO (Chief Operations Officer) of Trans Cable located at 800 East 2nd Street, told me how they had started the plant with just six employees as opposed to the current 35 employ-

ees on staff and the soon to be hired additional twelve employees to coincide with the expansion of approximately 9,000 square feet of operation space. With the plant running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Trans Cable offers three shifts for its employees with 12-hour workdays for three days on and four days off (with night shift premiums offered). The current starting salary is at approximately $16.00+ an hour. Taking me on a tour of his plant, Mr. Medina pointed out the new equipment purchased that will be used in their recent expansion and how the equipment combines different colored strands of cable conductors that is transformed into the finished product. While touring the plant, he spoke of how while the pandemic did affect their company with some loss of employees (health concerns), the company never ceased its

operation nor laid anyone off, but used the slowdown of business to build inventory. He explained how the owner of Wire & Plastic Machinery is leasing the space they are working in with the agreement for them to expand up to 50,000 more sq feet over the course of the next ten years. When asked if there was a projection for more expansion, Mr. Medina replied their next expansion is targeted for the end of 2024. On a personal note, I learned that Carlos Medina comes from a military family. Hailing from El Paso, Carlos was in the Air Force for six years and went into the wire business immediately following his service in the military. Instilling that work ethic into his children, he noted his daughters have worked summers in the plant and added how they employ about as many female workers as males.
Congressman Pat Fallon Visits Bois d’Arc Lake
Getting back to the topic of workers, Carlos shared that the benefit package for his employees include accrued vacation beginning after 90 days, profit sharing, 401K, retirement and six paid holidays. There is a relaxed casual work environment at the plant with special dress days to boost morales and too many potluck dinners (“we eat way too much”.) He reiterated that though they are currently training new employees for the expanded operations (training NTMWD Executive Director Jenna Covington, Congresscan take six to 10 weeks man Pat Fallon, and Freese and Nichols’ Adam Payne, Vice though some are ready to President and Bois d’Arc Lake Program Construction Mango after 3 to 4 weeks) they ager. Rev. C. C. Hazelip of the Union Valley Community was the pastor in charge. Charles Leever took the picture from the plank bridge on Bois d’ Arc creek, called Rocky Point Bridge. Over 300 people came to the event in buggies, wagons and on foot. The people brought picnic lunches and took part in the gospel singing during the afternoon. There was very little entertainment in the Randolph area at that time, making this a big event for the surrounding area residents.

This recipe is very special to our family because my mother use to make this for everyone she cared about and I have fond memories of her in the kitchen making Zucchini Bread and it always smelled so good!!
ZUCCHINI BREAD 3 beaten eggs 1 c. oil 2 c. sugar 2 c. raw zucchini, grated 3 c. flour 2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 tsp. salt 3 tsp. cinnamon 3 tsp. vanilla
1 c. chopped nuts I do not have the written directions but have always just put the beaten eggs in with all the rest of the ingredients and mixed it up well and put it into 2 greased loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until toothpick comes out clean. This bread will never disappoint and have even seen the zuchinni haters love it! I hope you will give this a try with all the zuchinni coming from the gardens right now. Enjoy! Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to Fannin County Leader at 224 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 or email me: fclsales@verizon.net

From My Life to Yours: Words Fitly Spoken Proverbs 25:11 James 1:19 Proverbs 15:1
By Bro. Bill Beasley
In Memorium Original Publish Date: June 10, 2014 My return to the United States at the end of World War II was a trip that will be long remembered – for its unpleasant moments as well as for its joys. After completing five weeks at rehabilitation some 4500 of us were placed in the Navy ship – The USS Admiral H.T. Mayo for the trip across the Atlantic to Boston, Mass. For me it was four days of sea sickness that was followed by an encounter that I would like to forget.
Are You A Christian?
I don’t think of myself as a grumbler by nature, but after standing in line for some six hours waiting to get part of my pay I was not a happy camper. My attitude was not one of kindness, nor did I choose my words carefully. When I arrived at the tellers cage I was venting my feelings, it provoked her to say “didn’t you know that there is a war going on?” You can imagine how that sounded to a combat veteran who had been shot down, who had four of his crew members killed, and who himself was just out of a prisoner of war camp. After the encounter, while I was rethinking what had been said, three verses of scripture came to mind. (Proverbs 25:11; Proverbs15:1; James 1:19). Why did I not remember these earlier? I don’t know but I haven’t forgotten them since. That was 69 years ago, but I remember them well today.

Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday at 11:00.

Wind Turbines in Fannin County? Consider the Impact on Our Residents. Many of us were surprised in early May to learn that our communities of Dodd City, Windom and Honey Grove have been targeted by firms seeking to develop an industrial turbine project encompassing approximately 20,000 acres of Fannin County-with more in Lamar County. In a recent community forum, I volunteered to organize an effort to gather information about the details of this development. We have heard of a number of land sales that failed in this land between our two new lakes once the buyers learned of the turbine projects. A realtor said that one thing you will never hear from a prospective buyer is, “I really want to buy land near a wind farm”. We should make it clear that our group

respects rights of a landowner to do as they wish with their own land. On the other hand, we equally have a right to object to what a neighbor or developer does that has a negative impact on our property value and enjoyment. In a few short weeks landowners of approximately 9,000 acres have given a resounding “No” to leasing land for turbines. Many are concerned that they will lose Agricultural exemptions on their properties-or be sued by other landowners for negative impacts to non-participating lands. They also believe that the long and short-term rise in value of their property in a prime location between two lakes will offset the relatively small lease payment for turbines. We need to express our urgent concerns to the Fannin County Commissioners Court, State Legislature, Tax Authorities and local school districts regarding any requests
from developers applying for tax abatement. Why would we agree to give a tax gift to foreign companies while the money flows out of our county and communities? One developer involved has a history of selling their projects early to international firms-who buy the plant hardware overseas while the profits also travel out of the U.S. This is a bad deal for our communities. We ask that you make your voice heard by joining our efforts at www.0windfarms.com

Discussion, consideration and action to approve Resolution designating the County Judge as Authorized Official of the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Grant Program, Chief Deputy as Program Director and County Auditor as Financial Officer – County Judge for County Auditor: Judge Moore explained this was a 100% grant that would fund a license plate reader to go into the Sheriff’s vehicles. Fannin County Sheriff Mark Johnson talked about how Fannin County are one of the few counties that still do not have this tool. The scanner can indicate if a car is stolen or involved in a crime and would be a great benefit to Fannin County Law Enforcement. After his endorsement, a motion was made by Commissioner Self to approve the Resolution with Commissioner Lackey seconding the motion which passed. 8. Discussion, consideration and action to allow Constable, Precinct 1 to office out of 200 East 1st Street (formerly the Purchasing Agent’s office) – Commissioner Precinct 2 for County Auditor: Commissioner Self explained how more space is needed by the constable and with the empty office space being available he believes it would make

for the County Investment Academy. Topics in this year’s program included: • Investment and market projections. • Anatomy of a recession. • American Rescue Plan Act update and reporting. • Civilian response to active shooter events. • Personnel policies and how to be in compliance. • What an outside auditor does. This year’s seminar also offered an optional leadership
mini-conference led by speaker and author Leslie Rhode. Participants learned new methods to lead through storytelling in traditional news media interviews and new social media feeds and how to create meaningful connections with constituents and team members. A highlight of the event each year is honoring the nominees of CTAT’s Outstanding County Treasurer Award during a luncheon ceremony.

Just wanting to share something positive that happened May 24th at the County Clerk’s office. While serving on the Abscentee Ballot Board Loyd East Jr. noticed the flags were tattered and threadbare. He decided to replace them. Loyd purchased new, larger flags. He and Walter Goodwater installed them. Loyd and Walt are military veterans and have a love for our country, as well as our county. It’s selfless acts like this that improve our community and show a love for our nation. Editorial and photos submitted by Myrna Trubey.

By Tina Moore
Janie Moore has been a volunteer with Open Arms Shelter for almost 2 years. She covers a weekly 4-hour shift which includes serving the residents their evening meal. While on the shift, she visits with the residents and gives encouragement for improving their future. In addition, Janie is the Food Coordinator for the shelter. She recruits volunteers to prepare evening meals and enlists local restaurants for meal donations. Then she organizes the monthly calendar for all evening meals. Janie has a “let’s join in” personality, so others are happy to cook a meal. Open Arms Shelter is very blessed to have one so dedicated to ensure a tasty evening meal every night.

Citizens and Fannin County officials have been working for years trying to obtain ownership of historical Lake Fannin. The Lake Fannin Volunteers have worked tirelessly to beautify and maintain the property and structures that was closed and neglected for so long. Citizens of Fannin County would greatly benefit to have such property that could be used for camping, fishing, historical education, environmental education, access to the Red River and much more. Below are a few key points to help you understand the current progress. Fannin County began the required appraisal and survey of Lake Fannin as noted in the Lake Fannin Conveyance Act of 2018. An Environmental Site Evaluation was also done in May 2019. The County received an Agreement of Intent from the USFS and was told to stop the already inprogress survey of the land until a minimum of $70,000+ was paid (see Aug 2019 costs below). This was the first Judge Moore had heard anything regarding additional costs besides the appraisal and survey stated in the Conveyance Act. Another Agreement of Intent was sent to the County in July of 2020 asking for an additional $300,000.00 for a cultural resources survey/contract (see July 2020 costs below). There have been numerous meetings between the County, USFS and representatives of our State elected officials. The conveyance is currently at a standstill because the County Judge feels this was intended to be a land conveyance and not a land sale, which is what this appears to have turned in to. * Question: Is this truly a conveyance or has it become a real estate sale? * Note: None of the costs below include the actual purchase of the land at fair market value. Please reach out to your elected officials and express what Lake Fannin means to you and any concerns or questions you may have.

Game wardens attended outreach events including Houston Boat Show, Poteet Strawberry Festival, Duck’s Unlimited and Mayfest, and used other digital media tactics to broaden awareness, said Boater Education Manager Kimberly Sorensen. “With boating season in full swing, we encourage all boaters to take the boater education course,” Sorensen said. “Boater education is required for anyone born on or after Sept. 1, 1993. AUSTIN – Texas Game Wardens issued fewer boating-related citations over Memorial Day weekend than they did in 2021. They cited increased boating safety awareness and patrols by game wardens and other marine safety officers as contributors to a drop in incidents. Between Friday and Monday, 352 game wardens conducted 10,218 safety checks on vessels, issuing 62 fewer citations than they did the year before. Texas Game Warden Colonel Chad Jones attributed this decrease to factors including expansion of boating safety awareness outreach. “First off, I want to commend those who conducted themselves safely and responsibly over what is always a busy weekend,” he said. “Our game wardens have really focused on increasing boating safety awareness over the past year, and I think we are starting to see the fruits of that effort. Combined with our patrols on Texas rivers, lakes and coastal bays, we saw a general reduction in cases over the weekend.” Game wardens did, however, respond to 15 boating accidents and six drownings that occurred on waterbodies including the Rio Grande, Lake Sommerville, Grapevine, Blanco River, Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Buchanan. “Unfortunately, drownings and deaths on the water are a painful reality our game wardens must contend with over

Lake Tawakoni is in full summer pattern these days! Seems like just about all species of fish are spawned out and are predictable. Hybrid bass and stripers have been good on shallow structures such as humps and extended points. White bass are mixed in the schools and all can be caught on slabs and swimbaits. Water Less Y’all -- Upper Trinity Kicks off Summer Water Conservation Campaign Lewisville, TX – June 1, 2022 – Considerable population growth in North Texas and more extreme weather events are underscoring the importance of water conservation for the region. The Upper Trinity Regional Water District that serves approximately 350,000 people in Denton, Dallas and Collin counties is launching its summer conservation campaign this week. “We anticipate more extreme weather events where our region will see longer dry periods followed by high precipitation events,” said Larry Patterson, Upper Trinity’s executive director. “We are counting on the ‘can-do attitude’ of North Texans to pitch in and conserve water to help us extend our water supply no matter what Mother Nature throws at us,” he said. This year’s campaign theme plays off fun and familiar Texas sayings with messages asking residents to #WaterLessYall and offering helpful resources and tips. Residents are encouraged to “do the Texas two-step” by watering no more than two days a week and only after 6 p.m. or before 10 a.m. Early morning watering is best due to cooler temperatures and less evaporation. Residents are also encouraged to “do the Texas Hold ‘em”: hold off watering after it’s rained or when rain is in the forecast, as well as during windy conditions. As much as 80% of water use in the summer months is for outdoor watering. It’s estimated that half of that water may be wasted due to poorly designed and maintained irrigation systems or watering at the wrong time of the day or for too long. There are easy, inexpensive ways to reduce water use and save money on water bills, while still maintaining healthy landscapes. Check out Upper Trinity’s new webpage at www.WaterLessYall.com which includes the following free resources, water-saving tips and more: • Sign up for weekly watering advice: The Water My Yard program (www.watermyyard. org) recommends the amount of supplemental water needed to maintain a healthy lawn each week based on current local weather conditions. • Only water when it’s need-
ed: An easy way to see if your lawn needs water is to insert a soil moisture gauge or a long screwdriver into the soil. If the screwdriver easily inserts into the soil, like a toothpick into a cake, your lawn does not need watering. If it’s hard to push in the soil, it’s time to water. • Cycle and soak: This method of watering helps water go deeper into the roots which is better for the plants. Water in shorter cycles (5-6 minutes each) and wait one hour between each cycle. • Get familiar with your sprinkler controller: The District has short videos at www.WaterLessYall.com showing how to adjust your sprinkler controller. Landscape professionals are also good resources to set and program systems. Avoid setting a controller once and forgetting it; adjust regularly for the time of year and weather conditions. Following Water My Yard recommendations can help with this. • Select the right plant for the right place: Texas native plants need less water and do better in local growing conditions. Installing plants that have similar water needs in the same location also helps avoid overwatering. Soil amendments (compost and mulch) help retain water in the soil and improve plant health. • Learn about Water Efficient Lawn & Garden Care for North Texas: The District shares the best water-saving tips on the website in one convenient brochure. The 29 communities Upper Trinity serves are projected to grow nearly fivefold by 2070. To meet future needs, Upper Trinity must rely on conservation, in addition to water reuse, maximizing existing supplies, and developing new water sources, such as Lake Ralph Hall, which is now under construction. “If we all do our part, we can stretch our water supplies further. This helps water providers, like Upper Trinity, keep costs down and ensures that adequate water supply is there every time we turn the tap,” added Patterson. “So, Water Less Y’all!”

The 22nd Anniversary Relay For Life of Fannin County is returning!
Press Release: BonhamWith cancer currently ranked as the second leading cause of death in the United States and research suffering delays and setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, the fight against cancer is more important than ever. Each year, the American Cancer Society, puts on its largest event, the Relay for Life, at over 2,000 locations around the world, raising money and awareness for cancer research, support and survival. On September 17, Relay For Life of Fannin County will be held in person for the first time since 2019 from 11am to 10pm at the Fannin County Courthouse. Although the Fannin County chapter of ACS was still able to raise money over $50,000 for the fight against cancer throughout the past two years, the return to an in-person event will be a relief and a joy for many. “We are excited! I think it is a new year and a new us,” said Tim La Vergne II, the lead organizer for the event.
Our local Relay For Life was forced to occur virtually in 2020 and a smaller style event in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. After two years of planning a comeback, this is why we decided to move our event to the Fannin County Courthouse. We want to go big! Our theme for this year is “Construction Zone: Making our Mark – Rebuilding the Mission” Events like Relay For Life allow for cancer survivors to connect with others and grow a strong support system. Relay For Life is a fundraiser that focuses on funding research for a cure for cancer. It was founded in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, and it has been a huge event ever since. Klatt walked a track himself in Tacoma, Washington, and raised money for the American Cancer Society. What is Relay For Life? Each year, more than 2.5 million people in over 20 countries raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer through the
Relay For Life movement. CELEBRATE: During a Relay event, participants and survivors celebrate what they’ve overcome. REMEMBER: We remember people lost to the disease, and honor people who have fought or are fighting cancer. FIGHT BACK: The event inspires Relay participants to take action against a disease that has taken too much. Fun Facts: Did you know what year Fannin County Relay For Life was formed? It all started years ago in the summer of 2000 by Sue Taylor and Nikki Williams. Over those years, we have raised over $1 million dollars towards the American Cancer Society Relay For Life... Way to go Fannin County! Let’s keep it up and continue to find a cure! This year we’re inviting Relayers from Fannin, Grayson, and Lamar Counties! You can sign up or make a donation at www.relayforlife.org/fannincotx or contact Tim La Vergne II at 903-227-8417, timlavergneii@gmail.com
Christians Should Not Be Scared!
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ)
The fear of terrible things is natural. We should NOT be scared of things that are good and right. There are many things that Christians should not be afraid of. Christians should NOT be afraid of the Bible. We are told to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). We are also told that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). We find that the Bereans were “more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily” (Acts
Dodd City Fire Dept Fundraiser Cook-Off and Cornhole
Lord” (Colossians 3:16). Christians should NOT be afraid of living for Christ and God. Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Paul reminds us of “Christ, who is our life” (Colossians 3:4). Many Christians are afraid of missing out, but we are told “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (1 John 2:15). And that “whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4). Paul states that “I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Let us not be afraid of the Bible, God’s word. Let us not be afraid to worship God. Let us not be afraid to live for God.

NTFB Feeding Network provided more than 780,000 meals to Fannin County families last year May 5, 2022 (Dallas) – Forty years ago, four women pledged to fight hunger in North Texas. These visionary leaders – Jo Curtis, Kathryn Hall, Lorraine Griffin Kircher, and Liz Minyard – began collecting and distributing donations of surplus food and grocery products through a network of charitable organizations across 13 North Texas counties. In doing so, they created The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB). The significant growth of the NTFB’s Feeding Network since its inception mirrors the region’s persistent rise in food insecurity. Today, in Fannin County, there are more than 5,000 foodinsecure neighbors – people who lack regular access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Of that number, more than 1,400 are children, giving Fannin County a child food insecurity rate of 21.9
percent.* “As the North Texas Food Bank celebrates its 40th anniversary, we do so with deep gratitude for every team member, volunteer, donor, advocate, and especially the Feeding Network of more than 200 partner organizations who have supported the Food Bank and helped us advance our mission to provide healthy food to people in our community over the last 40 years,” said Trisha Cunningham, President and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank. Through the Feeding Network of the following five partner organizations in Fannin County, last year the NTFB provided 918,132 pounds of food through our Fannin County feeding network, helping provide more than 781,254 nutritious meals. North Texas Food Bank Partner Agencies in Fannin County • Fannin Co Community Ministries • Manna House Bonham • Community Food Pantry – Honey Grove • Mckenzie UMC Shepherd’s Supper • Open Arms Shelter “While providing immediate access to nutritious food will always be at the center of our work, we know that creating lasting change in the fight against hunger requires tackling the underlying barri-
ers to food security,” continued Cunningham. Many of the NTFB’s partner agencies also provide additional services that address underlying factors that contribute to hunger. By providing vocational and financial training, they are helping families create greater financial stability, addressing one of the primary drivers of food insecurity. Over 40 years, these types of innovative strategies have evolved, but the mission to strengthen the communities by providing access to nutritious food has remained the Food Bank’s guiding light. “With your support of the North Texas Food Bank and our Feeding Network partners, we can continue our fight and bring nourishment and hope to North Texans,” said Cunningham. “Please join us on this journey by directly supporting the work of Fannin County food pantries and other organizations that are meeting hunger at its doorstep.” To learn more about contributing, volunteering or advocating in the fight against hunger, please contact one of the Fannin County community partners or visit www. ntfb.org/nourishnorthtexas. The Bois d’Arc Lake WPP outlines a strategy to implement management measures that will help improve and protect water quality in the watershed. “Acceptance of this plan is a result of collaboration between NTMWD, Texas A&M Texas Water Resources Institute and watershed stakeholders,” said David Cowan, NTMWD Watershed Manager. “We received valuable input in the development of the plan from local residents, agricultural producers, business and industry representatives, city and county personnel, as well as other interested parties.” These stakeholders, along with representatives from state and federal agencies, participated in a number of meetings of the Bois d’Arc Lake Watershed Partnership in 2021 to help shape the final plan. Healthy watersheds help reduce erosion and act as a filter to capture sediment
and pollutants before they enter water bodies. Maintaining healthy watersheds is vital for the protection of aquatic environments and water sources, including Bois d’Arc Lake. “We want to thank these stakeholders and our agency partners for their commitment and contributions to protect Bois d’Arc Lake, our region’s newest water resource,” said Cowan. Construction of the lake is ongoing. Once completed, the 16,641 acre reservoir will be an essential source of water supply for 2 million residents in North Texas. Routine water quality monitoring indicated that two waterways in the watershed, Bois d’Arc Creek and Honey Grove Creek, are impaired due to elevated levels of bacteria. A key goal of the Bois d’Arc Lake WPP is to address these impairments and ensure the new lake maintains good water quality. “With EPA acceptance of the plan, certain management measures identified in the WPP are now eligible for nonpoint source grant funding,” said TJ Helton, Nonpoint Source Management Program Administrator for the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board.

the Lady Hornets (15-71), who made their thirdstraight appearance in the 1A State softball semifinals and fourth in the last five complete softball seasons. Graves’ hit -- a single through the right side -- came to lead off the top of the seventh, but D’Hanis retired the following three batters to advance. While on defense, Graves, as the catcher,
also tagged out a sliding D’Hanis runner at home, taking a throw from shortstop Lindsey Mauppin who caught a throw from center fielder Carson Morrison, to complete a double play that ended D’Hanis’ fifth inning at bat. Senior Sonora Wild and junior Lindsey Skipper also each walked for Dodd City, which advanced to the postseason as District 152A’s No. 1 seed to the 1A playoffs.
