believed that silt was washing into Wolf Creek when it rained and as we all know, there has been plenty of rain since last September. In May, Robert came before the Bonham City Council to let them know about the problem. He told them that sand had accumulated not in inches but in feet and the water in the Wolf Creek area was brown due to all the sand. Robert had contacted several entities before finally getting someone to investigate. Lance Capehart (Director of Public Utilities for the City of Bonham) flew over the area and confirmed that he could see a problem but could not tell where it was coming from. Robert requested an investigation from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) in May and recently received the results of their investigation. TCEQ cited N-Tex Sand & Gravel/Wolf Creek with the following violation: Failure to maintain structural storm water controls in accordance with Part III Section A(4) (d)(3). On June 12, 2019, a breach was located by TCEQ. N-Tex Sand and Gravel/Wolf Creek has been given until July 24th to remedy the problem. Robert attended the Bonham City Council on July 8, 2019 and gave them an update and a copy of the report. The question from here that lays in the minds of those that live on Lake Bonham in the Wolf Creek area is; who is going to clean up Lake Bonham? How will this affect the lake from this time forward? Robert went to the City of Bonham with his questions and was told that they do not own the lake as of a couple of years ago. He is now reaching out to North Texas Municipal Water District, who owns the lake and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Robert shared that there were times that his neighbors would put sand in their yards, and if the rain caused the sand to run into the lake, they were forced to get a tractor and remove the sand from the water.

Memories for the First Year Dec. 7th, 1941 - Dec.12th, 1942
By Bro. Bill Beasley The two dates used in this week’s article mark the beginning of World War II and the date that I was sworn into the military. For the next five years I was to be a member of the United States Air Corp. It was not until several years later that the Air Force became a separate branch of service. At the time our country was savagely attacked by the Japanese War planes and we were plunged into World War II, I lacked just a few days of being eighteen years of age. Consequently, the first year of my involvement in the conflict was primarily
pre-military. Our war capabilities were at a low level and it was only by the intervention of God that we were able to turn certain loss into glorious victory. The military unit to which I was assigned was heavy bombers and my first combat mission was based in England with the target being the German forces massed on the English Channel making ready to invade the British territory and in support of our ground forces. The second year of my combat action was encouraging and we got to see glimpses of better days ahead. We were able to reverse our attack and began to carry the war to our enemies in occupied France. The scripture which came to mind as I went into combat and also during dark times was Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be

strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” In following articles, it was a joy to see beach heads at St. Lo, Normandy and Alsace, the freeing of the French was a joy to war wary fellow soldiers.

Commissioners Court Faces Dilemma Savoy Elementary 07/02/19 Pre-Kindergarten 5/21/19 with Possible Final Cost of Courthouse Restoration Project 1/3/17
By Sandy Hood
1 Call to Order / Establish Quorum – The regular Commissioners Court was called to order by Judge Moore on Tuesday, July 9, 2019. A quorum was established as all commissioners and the judge were present. 2 Invocation - Invocation was given by Pastor David Brackett of the First Baptist Church of Randolph. 3 Pledges – Pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags were led by Jerry Huffman. Jerry also shared a bit of history with the court. “On this day in 1948, ground was broken for the Bonham Veterans Administration Hospital. The facility was planned to provide general medical and surgical treatment and nursing home care for veterans. Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives served as principal orator at the event. The hospital admitted its first patient in November 1951. In 1973, the hospital was renamed Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Hospital.” 4 Introductions – Jamie Baker, III, Director of Public Policy for Congressman John Ratcliffe was acknowledged as being in attendance. 5 Public Forum – No one spoke in Public Forum. 6 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve additional easement on County Road 3115 - Commissioner Precinct 4 – This item was passed. 7 EXECUTIVE SESSION: Consultation with Attorney a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Section 551.0725 of the Government Code for deliberation regarding contract negotiations where deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the County’s interests with a third party – regarding Courthouse contracts and proposals – County Judge – At 9:10 am, Judge Moore, all commissioners, District Attorney and several people from Turner Construction entered into Executive Session. Executive Session ended at 9:55am. 8 Discussion, Consideration and Action regarding
Courthouse contracts and proposals – County Judge – Judge Moore stated the following about executive session: • A few weeks ago, they received bids from Turner Construction. Judge Moore stated that he is not pleased with where the bids came in at. He also stated that he believes that the commissioners and Turner Construction are not pleased either. • They have met a couple of times to talk about what they can do, where do they go from here and how can they make this better. • They have some strategies they are going to be looking at to see how they can lower the final cost of the courthouse restoration. • Commissioners Court did not reveal what the bids came in at, on this day. • They are going to move on with trying to get some other bids. • A meeting with Texas Historical Commission (THC) is in the near future. There are some things that THC is requiring that cost a lot of money. •“ We want the courthouse to be and look historic, but at the same time, we can’t saddle the citizens with so much cost that we can’t afford it.” • They are going to try and move forward with the courthouse restoration. • Courthouse Restoration will be a subject that will be talked about at the next Commissioners Court, and maybe the one after that. Commissioner Lackey stated the following regarding the executive session: • “We don’t know the final number.” • We are going to rebid some stuff. • We got some really good bids and there are some that are really bad. 9 Consideration and Action to approve Fannin County Auditor’s monthly reports for June 2019 - County Judge for County Auditor – Alicia Whipple reported year to date (YTD) income is $15,789,700, which is 58% of budgeted income received and YTD expenses are $13,113,296.36, which is
50% of budgeted expenses used. Commissioner Whitlock made a motion to accept the report. Commissioner Magness seconded. Motion carried. 10 Consideration and Action to approve payment of bills - County Judge for County Auditor - Commissioner Magness made a motion to pay the bills. Commissioner Whitlock seconded. Motion carried. 11 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: • Commissioner Whitlock had no comment. • Commissioner Self commended the Fannin County Relay for Life for being named top Relay for Life in the Dallas Region. He stated that he is real proud of that! • Commissioner Magness has no comment.
• Commissioner Lackey stated that there will be 9 road closures coming up because of the lake being built. He stated that this information is posted and there are also signs on the roads. This should be taking place in the next week or two. • Judge Moore stated that about two weeks ago the following words came to him while heading to a meeting regarding bids on the courthouse restoration, “You need to cast your net on the other side of the boat.” He explained that the last chapter in Luke talks about Jesus standing on the shoreline while the disciples are fishing. The disciples casted their nets on the left side of the boat and came up empty. Jesus said they needed to cast their nets on the right side of the boat and when they did, their nets
came up full. What he said he got from that is he needs to put his faith and trust in God, who can handle all situations. “We can work through anything as a group. Nothing good will happen from being divided. We can make this work. “He then said, “You will get more of the story as soon as we can release it, maybe next week.” Commissioners Court is held every Tuesday at 9:00am at the Bonham City Hall. Everyone is welcomed to attend.

50-75 years). Commissioner Lackey’s motion eliminated the option of using existing buildings for the Justice Center. During Commissioner’s Court on May 28, 2019, I expressed my concerns to Commissioner Lackey about the elimination of existing buildings from his April 23rd motion. One of my concerns was the rationale of why the use of existing buildings was eliminated; the committee should decide this issue.
I requested that Commissioner Lackey correct his error of eliminating existing buildings from the committee’s consideration for the justice center. Commissioner Lackey stated that his elimination wasn’t in error. One of his comments was, “…the county keeps pumping money into the upkeep of old buildings…” I submitted the appropriate forms, on time, to Commissioner’s Court to be placed on the agenda for June

The Future Justice Center for Fannin County – What Makes Sense During Commissioner’s Court on April 23, 2019, Commissioner Lackey made a motion to form a committee to determine the requirements of a new Justice Center, in order to accommodate the current and future needs of Fannin County (for approximately Building Juvenile Probation Adult Probation South Annex Windom Agrilife Sheriff’s Office

NOTE 2: 38K for the Agrilife building in 2018 was a parking lot addition and is removed from the calculations below. The average R&M cost per building per year is $6,097.00 ($329,283/54) (9 years x 6 buildings = 54) Each reader should judge whether the cost above is too much to maintain a public building over the course of a year. buildings from consideration by the justice center committee are encouraged to contact Commissioner Lackey to express his or her opinion. During his motion to create a committee to address the new justice center on April 23rd, Commissioner Lackey indicated some sense of urgency for moving forward with plans for the project. Also included in Commissioner Lackey’s discussion were comments about financing for 5 million dollars and a possible 1 to 2 cent tax increase, if needed, to pay for new construction. Personally, I believe a NEW justice center,

That is why I’m writing this letter. The county auditor provided the R&M expenses for county building upkeep for years 2010 through 2018 (see below).

with hooks for future expansion and appropriate security requirements, could cost between 5 and 10 million dollars. Bottom line: until we know what the courthouse restoration will cost us, and is paid for, I do not think it is wise to commit the citizens of Fannin County to an additional debt of 5 to 10 million dollars. Leasing, renting, or purchasing existing buildings for the near term may be an attractive option to avoid taking on debt we are not prepared for at this time. population growth in Fannin County materializes and provides the additional tax revenue that is expected to make a large expenditure less burdensome. Again, I encourage all citizens of Fannin County to contact your commissioner to voice your opinion concerning the elimination of existing buildings from the planning committee’s consideration. I also urge you to express your expectation that any recommendation from the committee be placed on a ballot, so that the citizens of Fannin County can execute their right to vote on such a significant matter.

140th Annual Leonard Picnic Parade
The theme is Our Heritage. What better way to start the parade than Grand Marshall, R C Kuhn, a special ceremony for him at the parade. Plan to get to the square early and enjoy the sounds of a Jazz Band at the Gazebo to get your morning started. If your planning on being in the parade, line up at the Baptist church for floats, cars and horses. Walkers and bicycles meet at the Methodist Church starting at 9am for judging. First United Bank has sponsored the Cash Prizes... $100.00, $50.00, $25.00, also trophies to be awarded. Introductions will be announced on the north side of the square as well as any entertainment. Please contact me if you have questions, Sheryl Stanley.

In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

Hunt Regional Medical Center now offering newest technology in knee replacement with Stryker’s Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery GREENVILLE, Texas (June 28, 2019) - Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville is the first in Northeast Texas to offer Stryker’s Mako roboticarm assisted knee surgery, an advancement that transforms the way total and partial knee replacements are performed. Richard Carter, CEO of Hunt Regional Healthcare, said the addition to the hospital’s orthopedic services comes at a time when knee replacements are expected to increase 673 percent during the next ten years while nearly one-third of pa-
tients are dissatisfied with conventional surgery. “We are proud to be among the first hospitals to offer this service in our area, combining the expertise of our surgeons with the accuracy of the robotic-arm technology” said Carter. “The advanced robotic technology allows the surgeon to create a personalized surgical plan for each patient using a virtual 3D model. During surgery, the robot assists the surgeon in executing that plan with a high level of accuracy and predictability, leading to
better outcomes and higher patient satisfaction,” Carter said. Studies have shown roboticarm assisted knee replacement to be two to three times more accurate than manual procedures. By selectively targeting only the damaged part of the knee, surgeons can resurface the diseased portion of the knee, while helping to spare the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding the knee joint. The innovative technique also leads to a reduced need for post-operative pain medication and physical therapy follow-
ing surgical procedures. This allows patients to experience a speedier recovery process, without the need for lengthy treatments or risky pain management. Orthopedic surgeons at Hunt Regional Medical Center who utilize the robotic-arm receive training directly from Stryker. “This addition to our orthopedic service line further demonstrates our commitment to providing the community with outstanding healthcare,” said Carter. Robotic-arm assisted partial
Your Talents are needed to Open Homeless Shelter
By Sandy Hood Open House brings community members together on June 30th to pray over the homeless shelter that will be open later this year. Early in 2015, a town hall meeting was held about the need of a homeless shelter for Fannin County. Surveys revealed that Fannin County had more homeless people than Cooke, Grayson, Red River and Lamar counties. There was a need, but no resource in Fannin County
to take care of the need. Like every other great idea, it takes time, planning, commitment and money. Now, here we are 4 years later and Open Arms Shelter will be open soon. But, there is still a lot to do. So far, the Old Zion Church on Albert Broadfoot was purchased and renovations have begun. A Board of Directors is in place and 501(c) (3) status has been achieved. The electrical and plumbing work is complete and has passed city inspection. The steeple was
removed because of leaking problems. There is still a lot of work that needs to be completed and the shelter needs volunteers to help in all aspects of the shelter from construction to running the day to day logistics. Here is a list of volunteer opportunities: 1) Construction/Remodel – get building ready to open and house homeless people. 2) Administrative – Work on site when shelter is open. 3) Food Services – Plan, prepare and serve meals. 4) Housekeeping – Wash linens, shop for groceries, organize pantry, etc. 5) Supply Room – Coordinate donations. 6) Office – Help with paperwork, filing, communication, etc. 7) Fundraising – Help plan and implement fundraising events. 8) Media – Help with monthly newsletter, newspaper articles, taking pictures, etc. There are many remodel projects that the shelter needs help with. Everyone coming together and doing a little here and a little there will get this

Some of the projects include; painting, yard work, framing, sheet rocking and so much more. Open Arms Shelter Mission Statement; a Biblical faithbased organization – providing temporary shelter and guidance toward an independent life through hope, encouragement, and shelter. Our mission is to provide the homeless in Fannin County with temporary shelter and guidance toward an independent life through hope, encouragement, and shelter. You can visit Open Arm’s website at https://www.oashelter.com The shelter will house about 14 people. It will have at least 3 private family rooms. There will also be a kitchen, laundry room, dining room, office, kitchen, lockers, and 2 bathrooms. One bathroom will be for those with a disability. Room sponsorships are available for businesses, families and individuals.

This work is part of the agreed order that we have with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). This was funded with Texas Water Development Board Funds that were secured last year. A little less than 50% of the construction has been completed and about $1.8 million has been spent of the $2.5 million construction project. The city has gone live with the utility billing system and they are completely switched over to the new software system now. A budget calendar and schedule was submitted to councilmen and all deadlines on the calendar are expected to be met. 3) Citizens Opportunity to Speak: * Emily Porter, Director of Tourism invited all to attend the Quilt Hop July 26th
* Daisy Bush, on behalf of her and her husband, thanked the City Council and everyone in the city of Bonham for the opportunity to start their first business, Java Joint on Lake Bonham. Their purpose was to bring real home cooking and the best lattes to the lake. They wanted to build relationships and to establish a place on Lake Bonham where people could come for food, friendship and fishing. The flood of September 2018 made them rethink things; if it flooded once it may flood again. They treated the building as their own and put in a new hot water, HVAC system, LED lighting throughout, new windows & screens, tile in the shower and a sink. They were open every weekend from 2012 to present. “Most of all this has been a wonderful experience.” 4) City of Bonham Employee of the Month for June 2019 is Amanda Wright. We’ve had a lot of requests this month for how to tell an emergency from something that can wait until the morning or through the weekend. The following situations hopefully will help you differentiate the emergency from the nonemergency. Lameness We’ve all come out to the horse that is non-weight bearing lame. It’s always terrifying because the first thought that comes to our mind is “broken leg.” However, it takes A LOT of force to break a leg, and while I have seen them, they’re not very common. If you come home and find your horse lame out in the pasture, ask yourself these questions to tell if you need to pay the emergency fee: Are there any cuts or punctures on his leg, especially around the joints? Is there any swelling? If there is swelling, is it hot or painful to the touch? Is the horse able to bend his leg normally in all directions? When you feel around on the skin, is there any feeling of “bubble wrap,” where you feel like you’re popping little air bubbles under the skin? If the answer to ALL of these questions is no, you are probably ok to wait until the morning, especially if you have a

little Bute sitting around. If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you should probably call. While it may not be a broken leg, it could be an infection of a vital structure (like a joint or a tendon sheath) that can get more difficult to heal the longer you wait. The Down Horse Down horses can be very confusing because they aren’t telling you exactly what’s wrong. We’re used to hearing about the overtly colicky horse. You know, the one who is rolling constantly, sweating, biting at its sides, stomping. But sometimes colic can be expressed just by a horse that is laying down. Laying down can really just be an indication of discomfort of some sort, even if it isn’t colic. I’ve seen choked horses laying down. Here is how to tell if you need to call the vet: go out and get the horse up. You may even have to be a little mean, maybe getting a lunge whip to help encourage him. Once he’s up, assess how long it takes him to lay back down. If he immediately goes back to eating, you’re probably ok. If he gets up but doesn’t start eating or starts drooling, or if he lays back down within 20-30 minutes, you may want to reach for the phone. The other thing you can try is giving your horse a dose of ORAL Banamine (flunixin meglumine). Oral Banamine takes about an hour to work. If your horse starts laying down at any time between 1 and 24 hours after you give that Banamine, it’s time to call. If the first dose of Banamine doesn’t work, a second dose won’t work either, so don’t bother. If, after one hour, the horse seems better, take his feed away and monitor him for 24 hours. He can have small bites of fresh grass or a few handfuls of alfalfa every few hours if he doesn’t start laying down again. After 24 hours, if he’s still comfortable, slowly re-introduce him back to his original feed.
c.) Texoma Community Center (MHMR) Board of Trustees – The City Council appointed Judge John Skotnik to this board. 6. Consider and take action to approve a resolution supporting the application to the Texas Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School Program – The resolution was passed by the City Council. This was the last piece of documentation needed to apply for the Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS) This grant program is 100% state funded and centers on sidewalks and accessible transportation, but mainly sidewalks that connect a neighborhood to a school system. The schools have to be grades K-8th. Two different routes to LH Rather and IW Evens were looked at. City Manager, Sean Pate presented the information and is hopeful that Bonham will score in the upper percentile.

Billy’s been a busy guy ever since he became the official town dog here. Sally had been the town dog until she passed away on Doc’s porch, and then Billy’s owner died just two weeks after that, so it was something of a natural progression. Sometimes offices are filled without an election. The high school wood shop boys built Billy a dog house next to the school crossing, but Billy preferred Aunt Ada’s couch in the cold months and a nice dog depression under an oak tree when it’s warm. Billy was making the rounds this morning. He had snacks at the Gates of Heaven Chinese café (back door, of course) and the Mule Barn truck stop, and conned a granola bar out of some kids just leaving the convenience store. Then he headed down the main street, turned right at the drug store, and ended up on the porch of The Rest of Your Life Retirement Home. A brief scratching and whining gave him access, and he cruised around, being petted and loved, until he found Pop Walker. Pop can remember what happened in World War II right down to the mess hall menu, but he has a tough time with names and whether he’s had breakfast today or not. “Uh …?” Pop looked at the
lady in the nurse’s uniform. “I’m Jean, Pop.” “Oh sure … Jean, okay if I go outside with the dog?” “Only in the back yard, Pop. Okay?” He grinned. “Okay.” Pop and Billy walked around back there for a while, and Pop

found a stick and threw it for Billy a few times. Then they went to a bench in the shade and Billy laid his head on Pop’s knee and got some free ear rumples. Pop looked down at the dog. “I’m glad you came over today … Billy,” Pop said. Pop remembers World War II, also.

and 27th. She said that this year they will feature Space Quilts which were inspired by an astronaut who made a quilt block while she was in space. She then came home and extended the challenge to others all over the world and ended up with 33 Space Quilts. The Space Quilts will be set up at Sam Rayburn House, Sam Rayburn Library and the Creative Art Center. There will also be many other quilts. * Robert Lee informed the City Council that he had come to them a few months prior with a problem with the water in Lake Bonham and what he suspected was a problem at the sand pit. The reason he came back was to let them know that there has been a violation to the sand pit for failure to contain storm water runoff. He gave the City Council a copy of the violation. Please read the article in the Leader titled; Contamination of Lake Bonham/Wolf Creek Confirmed by TCEQ.

Game Warden Field Notes
Jet Ski Roundup On June 3, a marine theft unit game warden responding to information about a possibly stolen jet ski for sale on social media went to the location to investigate and ended up seizing a pair of stolen jet skis. There were approximately 20 more jet skis at the location, some of which had identifying numbers removed. The warden called for reinforcements and subsequently seized several more jet skis (3 stolen and 2 with no identifying numbers). The investigation ended with eight seized vessels, including one stolen out of Florida back in 1996. Property hearings to determine ownership are pending.
Stuck in the Middle On June 9, several game wardens were patrolling the Rio Grande River near the Roma Port of Entry when they observed a group of 23 individuals stranded on an island on the U.S. side of the river. Wardens approached the group and learned they were not U.S. citizens, had been stranded on
the island overnight and required immediate assistance. Wardens radioed Border Patrol vessels in the area and worked with them to transport the group to safety. Crossing the Line Nearly a year-and-a-half after game wardens received a complaint from a landowner in Falls County about a helicopter flying over his property shooting feral hogs, and just one week before the case was set to go to trial in June, the helicopter pilot and the gunner both pled guilty to Class A misdemeanors for hunting non-game animals without landowner consent. Game wardens made the cases after an extensive investigation documenting 34 dead feral hogs on the complainant’s property, along with evidence collected using drones, metal detectors and a K9 game warden search dog. The investigation ultimately led to four arrest warrants and multiple Class C citations being issued in addition to the Class A guilty pleas.

Toyota ShareLunker Program 1/1/19 Produces Tens of Thousands of Big Bass Offspring in 2019 ATHENS – The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Toyota ShareLunker Program is having a banner year in its efforts to create bigger, better bass in Texas. After successfully spawning three of the five 13 pound or larger Legacy Class largemouth bass loaned to the selective-breeding program in 2019, the department’s hatchery staff produced more than 92,000 offspring to stock in Texas public lakes. “We are extremely pleased with the number of ShareLunker offspring produced this year, and we couldn’t have done it without the anglers who generously loaned us their 13 pound and larger bass for our selective-breeding program,” said Kyle Brookshear, Toyota ShareLunker Program Coordinator. “This generosity doesn’t just increase the lunker potential of the lakes where those fish were caught, it also helps us in our effort to convert our entire hatchery broodstock to ShareLunker offspring, which will benefit every lake in Texas.” In total, more than 55,000 fingerlings were stocked in the 2019 Legacy Class donation lakes – including Lake Conroe, Lake Fork, Marine Creek Lake, and Lake Leon. Additionally, more than 30,000 pure Florida largemouth bass offspring from ShareLunker 577 and ShareLunker 581 are being retained as hatchery broodstock so that TPWD can stock these big bass by the millions statewide in coming years. Thousands of fingerlings produced from ShareLunker 581 are being retained to stock as six-inch fish into the new Bois d’Arc Lake in Fannin County. Three of the five Legacy Class fish loaned to TPWD in

2019 were released back into their home lakes after spawning, which includes Lake Conroe, Marine Creek Lake and Lake Fork. The other two fish caught from Lake Leon and a private research lake were donated to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, where ShareLunker 578 can be seen on display and handfed by scuba divers during the daily dive show. Although the donation season for 13 pound or larger Legacy Class fish has ended, anglers can still enter all largemouth bass 8 pounds or larger through the end of the year to help expand catch data for fisheries biologists and interested anglers in exchange for great prizes. As of June 1, 214 of these fish have been entered from 75 lakes across the state, including 153 qualified as Lunkers (8 pounds or larger), 56 qualified as Elite Class (10 pounds or larger), and five qualified as Legacy Class (those over 13 pounds loaned to TPWD for the selective breeding and stocking program). With less than 6 months left in the 2019 year-long season, the current top 10 lunker producing lakes in the state include Lake Fork with 23 entries, Lake Conroe with 22 entries, Lake Athens with 15 entries, Lake Pflugerville with nine entries, Sam Rayburn Reservoir with eight entries, Lake Falcon with six entries, Possum Kingdom Reservoir with five entries, Lake Ray Hubbard with five entries, and Lake Austin and Gilmer Reservoir with four entries. The eligible anglers who loaned TPWD a Legacy Class fish through the entry cutoff date March 31 received an even bigger prize package that included a replica of their fish presented on stage at Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest in May. These anglers were also entered into a separate $5,000 Bass Pro Shops shopping spree drawing, won by ShareLunker 579 angler Barry Prince of Lindale. Anglers can enter bass in the program using the Toyota ShareLunker app – available for free download from the Apple App Store and Google Play – or by using a form online at https://texassharelunker.com/. The digital entry forms on both platforms allow anglers to quickly and easily submit photos of the fish being properly measured, weighed and held. These forms also include simple instructions for anglers who would like to provide a sample of fish scales from their lunker bass to TPWD researchers for genetic analysis.

Quilt Hop Coming to Honey Grove July 26-27
Once again, on July 26 and 27, the Quilt Hop is coming to the lovely historic St. Marks Church in Honey Grove. This is a good week-end to have friends and family visit you Honey Grove. The photo shows last year’s event. This year we are delighted to be showing quilts from the collection of Claudia Picard, who has been collecting quilts almost her entire life. She vividly remembers her grandmother’s home where her grandmother and friends were

quilting in an upstairs room once a week. She has collected old quilts and new quilts and has made quilts herself. She has graciously agreed to let us display many of her quilts at St. Marks. Janet Kilgore, who is organizing the event in Honey Grove this year, says: “The colors and designs of these quilts are wonderful. St. Marks will be ablaze in color. We can’t wait to show off the historic church and these beautiful quilts to Quilt Hop visitors.” The Friends of the Honey Grove Library sponsors the
Quilt Hop stop at St. Marks each year. The Friends manage the church, which is used for various community functions during the year and is available to rent for weddings. Honey Grove also has many painted quilt squares within the City that will be enjoyed by Quilt Hop visitors. The location in Honey Grove is one of 10 quilt hop locations. The others are in Bonham. By Rich Hilliard College athletics signings filled the final weeks of spring for 2019 graduates of Fannin County high schools. Meanwhile, their predecessors achieved at the collegiate level in athletics during the spring. The following include just a few of the noteworthy accomplishments by a few young women from Fannin. At Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Keeshia Thompson completed a fouryear softball career by being named team most valuable player. Thompson’s best season occurred in 2018 when she received an honorable mention in the Great American Conference softball awards. Thompson, a 2015 Dodd City graduate, produced a .353
batting average in her junior season to earn recognition. She totalled 60 hits, highlighted by 11 doubles, six home runs and a triple. Thompson scored 41 runs and had 33 runs batted in, while posting a .963 fielding percentage while mainly playing center field with other time at third base. At Tarleton State University, Jordan Withrow continued to excel in college softball. During her junior season, Withrow, a 2016 Trenton graduate, with 570 career strikeouts, set a program-record in the category. The righthanded pitcher struck out 215 in 2019 alone, en route to a 22-5 record and career-best 1.81 earned run average. Opponents hit only .183 against her. The effort earned Withrow a second-consecutive All-American honorable mention from

FastPitchNews.com, as well as D2CCA first team all-region and All-Lone Star Conference first-team notoriety. She fulfilled the expectations of her entering the season -having been named during the preseason as an All-American by FastpitchNews.com and as the LSC pitcher of the year. At Centenary College of Louisiana, Alyssa Davis, a 2018 Leonard graduate, earned a No. 1 spot in singles on the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis all-tournament team. Davis received the tennis honor in April, after recording 353 kills and 149 digs in 120 sets last fall as a freshman for Centenary volleyball -- the sport in which she signed to extend her athletic career at the college.
Leonard football aims to rebound after rare postseason miss in ‘18

By Rich Hilliard Class 3A-II Leonard in 2018 did something rare for it under longtime head coach Shane Fletcher: miss the high school football playoffs. The Tigers, who had previously made seven-consecutive postseason trips and eight in the last nine years under him, will look this fall to make 2018 prove to be an anomaly.

Fletcher’s 15th season at the helm in 2019 will start with a trip on Friday, Aug. 30, to 2A-I Wolfe City. The first full month of games will include: vs. 3A-I Commerce (9/6), at 3A-I Bonham (9/13), vs. 2A-II Detroit (9/20) and at Bells (9/27) -- the latter of which to start District 9-3A (II) play. District play continues the next four-consecutive weeks: vs.
Prairiland (10/4), at Paris Chisum (10/11), vs. Blue Ridge (10/18) and at Whitewright (10/25). Leonard, which finished 2-7 overall and 2-4 in district play last year, will play host to Cooper on Nov. 1 to complete 9-3A (II) play and its regular season. If a postseason return happens, the Tigers will have two weeks to prepare, having the district bye on Nov. 8.

By Rich Hilliard IVANHOE -- Don’t let Stewart Richards’ previous largeschool coaching stint fool you. Having spent his entire 18year career with Lake Dallas ISD, he had a chance to hold many roles -- as do coaches by necessity in smaller towns -- as the school grew. Most recently, he served as the lead girls varsity basketball assistant at Lake Dallas -- which ballooned from Class 3A (currently known as 4A) when he arrived in 2001 to 5A now. Richards also served, with regard to girls sports, as head coach for track and jayvee basketball, as well as co-coordinator for high school and sole overseer of middle school athletics, during his time at Lake Dallas. He started there by coaching boys sports. “I coached about everything there,” he said. Richards will now return to a school setting which has more in common with his hometown of Paducah, Texas. He has been hired as head girls basketball coach at 2A Sam Rayburn. “I got the head coaching bug last year,” said Richards. “When I saw the Sam Rayburn open-
