Instituted under direction of Elder Willie Picket, missionary of South Baptist Convention, on Nov. 9, 1847. Charter members: Betsy Parrish Gilmer; Margaret Hart; John W. Jones, Tamazine D. Jones, Tamazine F. Jones; Benjamin B. Parrish, Thersa C. Parrish; SInclair Stapp, Sallie Parrish Stapp. Elder Pickett was chosen pastor; John W. Jones, Deacon; and Sinclair Stapp, Clerk. On June 16, 1849, Jones, David Pevler, and Adam Yoakum were asked to superintend building a meetinghouse. This was completed in 1853. The church still serves this community. (1971).

Notes: In 1995, due to the poor condition of the church building, the congregation made the decision to tear down the church building. The pulpit, along with the folding chairs and tables and the piano, were moved to the Allens Chapel Community Center.

Press Release - June at Oakwood was busy after all the spring rains. The weeds and grass grew at a fast rate. There are low spots in the cemetery which hold water, and those places can't be mowed until the water drains away. This means there is a lot of extra mowing, and it’s not an easy job. Thank you, Keith, for all your work. Base rock and gravel were ordered. The rains caused a lot of deep trenches in the roads, and gravel washed. Some of the roads were almost impassable. Our volunteer, Bill Moreland—along with his volunteer tractor--have been working hard on the roads. Thank you, Bill. Large sprouts were trimmed from the bottom of trees and crepe myrtles. Several pickup loads were hauled off. Thank you to Sandy Morrison, our volunteer Grounds Keeper and Board Member, for overseeing the work. Thank you, Sandy, for keeping Oakwood the beautiful cemetery it is.

Ingredients:

For the Cake:

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

2 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 cup sour cream

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

Zest of 2 lemons

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Lemon Glaze:

1 ½ cups powdered sugar

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

Zest of 1 lemon

For Garnish (optional):

Thin lemon slices

Fresh mint leaves

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 10-inch Bundt pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and lemon zest and mix until combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the sour cream and lemon juice, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Pour the batter into the prepared Bundt pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

While the cake is baking, prepare the lemon glaze. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, lemon juice,

and lemon zest until smooth. Set aside.

Once the cake is done baking, remove it from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes.

Carefully invert the cake onto a wire rack set over a baking sheet or parchment paper. Remove the pan and let the cake cool completely. Once the cake is cool, drizzle the lemon glaze over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.

Garnish the cake with thin lemon slices and fresh mint leaves, if desired. Slice and serve your Extreme Lemon Bundt Cake.

ENJOY!!!

Letter to the Editor

Open letter to the Mayor/City Council: On June 24th, I saw an update about the shelter changing policies that would result in an even higher number of animals in the shelter being put to death. I was unsuccessful in reaching the Mayor by phone, so I submitted a form on the city website requesting a call from the mayor to discuss the dire situation. Three weeks later, I still have not gotten a call. I saw information on Facebook about the city council meeting on July 8th. But there was no clear information on procedures on that process. I showed up on July 8th to the council meeting but the Mayor said if there were more than one person wanting to speak on the same subject, we would all have to get together. I know it's a small town, but I am relatively new here and I was lost on how I was supposed to know who was there to speak about this or another subject. I guess the Mayor assumes everyone there knows each other.

When the Chief of Police came into his position, he had a meet and greet, I went to talk to him about the animal shelter, I was telling him there is a problem with not allowing rescues to do tags pulls. Bonham Animal Shelter has such a terrible reputation with a lot of rescue groups, that I have been told they don't waste their time driving to Bonham. I also told him the ACO was rude and hateful with volunteers and people just coming into the shelter. I also talked about the shelter not following up on adopted animals getting spayed and neutered, which adds to the problem. I left with no confidence that he would do anything.

If you are not familiar with the current state of shelters in Texas, it is at an all time low. Shelters are struggling for fosters/adoptions and most shelters are doing special things to help promote adoptions. However, Bonham has made it harder to adopt with limited hours and information on the available animals. I think the Mayor needs to appoint an independent group to do a full review on policies and what is going on with the shelter, including a full count of how many animals have been killed there this year.

He noted good news of a decreased num-

ber of claims for the quarter as many are getting well and back to work. Noting his department is currently $66,000 below budget, he explained the reason for his exceptional numbers being due partly to negotiation efforts with medical providers as well as a simple “luck of the draw” with less expensive medical procedures being needed by patients at this time. He noted he will continue with his cost saving measures before concluding with information regarding a “free medical equipment program” for those in need in Fannin County that is currently in the works. He asked if anyone has medical equipment in their home they are no longer in need of (such as crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs, etc.) that have a hard surface and can be sanitized (material braces and wraps that are not new in a box are ineligible) and would like to be of assistance to their neighbors in need, to contact his office. On the flip side of the issue, he noted that anyone who is not able to afford medical equipment they need, to contact his office for assistance.

county or city road. He noted a meeting was to be held later in the day with that city’s attorney to iron out details involving the road and the Interlocal Agreement for Road Maintenance.

Where Is This Kingdom?

Calvary Baptist Church Bonham, Texas

As citizens of the United States, we do not really understand kingship because we don’t have a king. However, when you become a citizen of heaven through repentance sin and faith in Jesus Christ, you come under the Kingship of Jesus Christ! Yes, according to Scripture, He is our King. This King Jesus has a kingdom. You may ask, “Where is this kingdom?” If you are a true

Sunday

Morning

Hello everyone!

follower of Jesus Christ, this kingdom is in your heart!

(Luke 17:21)

Today, we worship Jesus, Our King! We come under His authority. We bow before Him. We live in complete and immediate obedience to Him. Philippians 2:9-11 says, “Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on

earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Yes, one day EVERY KNEE will bow. It is not a matter of “if,” but “when.” If you have never done so, choose to bow before Him today and make Him your King!

Yours for Broken Chains, Lyn and Lissa

Re-Wind “Faith Removes Discrimination”

In James 2:1-13, this message that we are given is that we, as Christians, ought to treat everyone equally, regardless of their race, social status, or other factors. Oftentimes we show favoritism to the rich over the poor, or judging others based solely on outward appearance. Thinking about how others can improve our lives can often lead to behaviors such as selfishness or favoritism, just to name a few. We must remember that God looks at our hearts, and not our outward appearance.

Showing mercy and grace to others is evident of Christ in our lives, and God will show mercy to those of us who are in Christ. We are to show mercy because we know that others are being shaped into what God would have them to be through trials of their own. We must remember that we are forgiven much more

than we are asked to forgive. This passage has a threefold message. First, in verses 1-4, we must not show partiality, which means elevating or exalting someone based on outward appearance, wealth, social status, or what have you. Secondly, in verses 5-7, we are warned to not honor the rich above the poor. James points out that it doesn’t make sense to strive so hard to please the rich while ignoring the poor. Lastly, in verses 8-13, we are to fulfill the law by loving others. Jesus tells us that the most important commands in scripture are to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

The apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 10:12, “For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek; for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.”

A classic hymn that fits with

the message in this passage was written by John Oxenham in 1908.

“In Christ there is no east or west, in Him no south or north, but one great fellowship of love throughout the whole wide earth.

Join hands, then, people of the faith, whate’er your race may be. All children of the living God are surely kin to me. In Christ now meet both east and west, in Him meet south and north.

All Christly souls are joined as one throughout the whole wide earth.”

If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

The Joy Of Having Our Sins Forgiven

When we truly understand that judgment is coming; that we will be judged according to the divine Word of God (Acts 17:31), that SIN separates us from the Only True and Living God (Isaiah 59:1-2), and that the Lord has devised a way for us to be with Him for eternity (John 14:1-6), then, we will strive to live according to God’s law. SIN is the one thing that besets us, it becomes a weight that hinders the Christian from running the race with patience (Heb. 12:1). With sin in our lives, there is a “certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries” (Heb. 10:27). Verily, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb 10:3) for those that still have sin in their lives.

When the Jews, on the day of Pentecost, realized that they had sinned in crucifying Jesus, the Son of God, they asked

the most important question: “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37). They need to get rid of their sins. They needed God to say, “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more” (Heb. 8:12).

David reminds us, “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile” (Psm. 32:1-2).

Sins are remitted according to God’s Word. Paul writes the message of ‘the redeeming’ accomplished by Christ, “Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works” (Titus 2:14).

When Christ forgives sins, they are completely forgiven. Remember that for those who obey the Lord, he has “forgiven you all trespasses” (Col. 2:13).

God forbids us to continue in SIN (Rom. 6:1-2). The fact is that when we name the name

of Christ we are to DEPART from iniquity (2 Tim. 2:19).

We should forevermore rejoice in the TRUTH, not in INIQUITY (1 Cor. 13:6).

When our SINS are forgiven by the grace of GOD, then we should treat those around us in a Godly manner, being “kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you” (Eph. 4:32).

Our Savior came to lift the burden of SIN, to Wash away SIN by His blood. He invites each to have SINS forgiven. Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matt. 11:28-30).

Truly we can see, “Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin” (Rom. 4:7-8).

Week of July 10, 2024

Bois d’Arc stained; 85 degrees; 0.27 feet below pool. Bass are best in the bushes and trees in 6-12 feet with Beavers and creature baits on Texas Rigs. Some fish are in 4-7 feet on the outside of the grass line on main lake points biting chatterbaits, flashy swimmers and spinnerbaits. Offshore bass are good in 10-15 feet of water with Carolina rigs and Texas rigs on brush piles. JawTech KO sticks good around bushes and outside of grass 4-6 feet. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service.

Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 83 degrees: 2.00 feet below pool. Water is being released at the spillway. Anglers are reporting good catches.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 2.60 feet above pool. White bass are briefly and sporadically surfacing in small schools midlake near the dam around 7:15 a.m. White bass are busting on quarter inch shad fry. When sandies are on the move use 3-4 inch swimbaits, otherwise 1 ounce slabs will be good. One day fish are on shallow points, and the next day they are deep in 20-30 feet of water. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 1.96 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is great using live bait, slabs or topwaters on the right day. The weather should fire them up this week, watch for birds bouncing around the banks and hovering over schooling fish in deep water along river channels and main lake ledges. Bass fishing is slow using top waters early along the bluffs and using electronics to fish brush piles in coves 10-20 feet of water. Slow and shrink your approach to match the hatch and the heat. Crappie fishing is good jigging brush piles using electronics in the little mineral arm of the lake and near docks. 12-15 feet of water finding structure and roaming fish on chartreuse and black jigs. Catfishing is good seeing channels coming off baited holes and punch bait in 15-25 feet of water.

Joey's Job Jump: Ector assistant, alum Grijalva soars to Class 1A Eagles' basketball helm

Story and photos by

ECTOR -- Class 1A Ector didn't have to look far during the spring to find its next head boys' basketball coach.

Alumnus Joey Grijalva, a 2020 graduate, received promotion to the role on June 2.

"Taking over the head coaching position at the school I graduated from is truly a

blessing," said Grijalva. "It's an incredible opportunity to give back to the community that shaped me and to inspire the athletes that are here now.

"We have work to do," he said, "and I’m more than excited to get started."

Grijalva will look to coach Ector to its 10th postseason boys' basketball trip in the last 11 years, as the Eagles will compete for the next two sea-

Honey Grove outfielder Serenity Canady has earned an honorable mention in the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 2A All-State softball awards for 2024.

Canady garnered the notoriety after helping Honey Grove this spring be a bi-district finalist and the No. 2 seed from District 15-2A in the Class 2A playoffs.

She also earned a second-team selection in the outfield in the 15-2A softball awards.

sons in the new 19-1A and retain district rivals Dodd City, Fannindel, Savoy, Campbell and Miller Grove.

He fills the role handled the last nine years by Blake Turner, who guided Ector's basketball boys to four district titles in a five-year span, eight overall postseason trips -- and twice to the Region III-1A quarterfinals.

Turner garnered district

coaching superlatives to go with each championship and wonhis 100th and 200th games while leading the Eagles. Ector finished 30-7 overall -- his most wins in a single season as a head coach -- to complete its regional quarterfinal run in 2020.

"I am beyond excited for Joey to be taking over the boys' basketball program," said Turner, who will now

serve as head girls' basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill.

"He is absolutely a rising star in the profession, and will do great things for Ector," said Turner. "He has worked extremely hard the last three years to put himself in a great position to have success.

"As an alumni who poured everything he had into the

program as a player and an assistant coach, this job is very meaningful to him and I know he will put everything he has into it now as well. He definitely has a vested interest in the success of the program."

Note: Grijalva, a State tennis qualifier in mixed doubles with current Ector girls' assistant Destiny Whitburn in 2019, will continue to assist with Eagles' baseball.
