ed. She also noted that sales tax revenue continues to track 11% favorable than what was projected in the original Fiscal Year 2022 Budget. The year-to-date building permit revenue through June is over $263,000.00 which is tracking 12% greater than the amended budget of $300,000 for the Fiscal Year. On a less positive note, the water/sewer revenue through June has made no improvement as it continues to track 11% below the original budget and 6% below the amended budget. It is anticipated however that as the higher water demand season kicks in, a recovery will be forthcoming in that area. State law prohibits the City Council from considering deliberations on any item not listed on the posted City Council Agenda]: A citizen of Bonham spoke to commend the excellence of work from the EMT who assisted his wife during a call to his home. He noted how due to the EMT’s patience and concerned care for his wife, extra time with medical testing was taken which led to the discovery of a cardiac condition which had been overlooked by previous medical personnel. The EMT advised a heart specialist to be consulted with the information of the condition uncovered. After he spoke, Fire Chief Scott Ridling noted that July 15, 2022 marks 20 years of EMS service in Bonham.

Clothing Words With Actions
By Bro. Bill Beasley
In Memorium Original Publish Date: July 22, 2014
James 1:22 Romans 12:1
The call that I mentioned last week was primarily mine to the work of the church related ministry. The commitments made this week in “Clothing Our Words with Actions” are best described as “our” sacrifices. And yet when I place the decisions we had to make alongside of the Lord’s, I feel a bit embarrassed to think of them as sacrifices at all. While they were costly, we were glad to make them for His Glory. The Bible encourages us “To be doers of the Word and not hearers only (James
Are You A Christian?
1:22) and “To present our bodies as living sacrifices, which is our reasonable service. (Roman 12:1) This we began to do as we contemplated our college preparation. To make ready we were counseled by the president of East Texas Baptist College and made our choice to do our studies there. I was licensed to the ministry of preaching on June 29, 1947. We sold our house and furniture and made a deposit for entry in the fall of 1947. We made the decision to sell our car and put these funds on hold to buy another car when needed. We rented a room in a private home and decided to take our meals in
the college dining room. We enrolled as freshmen September, 1947 and moved to Marshall where we were to make our home for the next four years. That was 1947. Today is 2014. Sadie, my wife, was a very active part until her death in 2012. I am still as active as strength and opportunity allow – 67years. My thought in closing this week is this - preparation for whatever God wants us to do preceded performance. God will do His part and more. However, He expects us to “clothe our words with actions.” He promised to guide you and bless you and walk with you each step of the way.

Romans 12:18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday at 11:00.

City of Bonham Continued from page 1 Mr. Pate detailed the current water/sewer projects; streets and drainage projects; current commercial and residential developments; plans for future development that included 50 home development off White Street, 250 home development off South 121 near Gates Hill Cemetery, 400-acre mixed use development off Silo Rd and a 77-acre mixed use development behind new Fix and Feed development off Hwy 121. He wrapped up his overview by noting that all the studies, plans and actions have had the purpose of being prepared for the inevitable growth that has been progressing towards Bonham. He gave examples of other cities that have been woefully unprepared for the growth reaching their borders and noted that Bonham will not be included among the unprepared and concluded his report with projections for future growth. One such projection being a population of 18,173 by the year 2030. He concluded his report noting that it is exciting times to be in Bonham with a lot of opportunities for citizens to get involved with the many boards being created to handle the growth process. “We want to grow smart” 6. Fannin County Commissioners Court – Burn Ban Extended
By Rose Schwartz
Tuesday, July 12, 2022, County Judge Randy Moore called to order a Special Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with three County Commissioners and County Judge present. Commissioner Magness was not present. 2. Hold and attend a PUBLIC HEARING to hear comments regarding a change in zoning application; 25.08 acres, Property ID# 78153 on old FM 1396 in Windom, from Agriculture & Ranching District to Rural Estate Single Family District: Judge Moore asked if anyone was wishing to speak on this matter. When no-one came forward to speak, he explained there had been no protests made on this zoning change request and the purpose of the hearing was to assure the change was done properly. 3. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 8:44 a.m. On the same day at 8:50 a.m., Judge Moore called to order another Special Meeting of the court and again noted Quorum was established. 2. Hold and attend a PUBLIC HEARING to hear comments regarding a Special Exception application; Property ID# 78153 in Windom with the following requested setbacks: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins, noted that there had initially been a protest involving this request for Special Exception with some setbacks on this property. However, the parties involved came to a resolution and the protest was withdrawn. James Richey with Richey Development Engineering spoke to represent the owner of the property in question. He then went on to explain the reason the setback adjustment was being requested. After he spoke, Judge Moore noted how the protest involving this request had been settled with the help of a sit down with both parties and their attorneys yesterday. After noting that, he asked if anyone present had anything to say about these setbacks. When no-one came forward, Judge Moore asked for an adjournment motion. 3. Adjourn: Motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 8:54 a.m. Again, on the same day at 9:00 a.m., Judge Moore called to order the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. After Judge Moore referenced Quorum being established, Co-Pastor Terry Horn of the Solid Rock Church in Bonham, led the Invocation. Major James Manis, Retired, led the Pledges. 4. Introductions: There were no introductions. 5. Public Forum: Executive Director of BEDCO, Gayle Cooper spoke to ask the court to consider a short-term rental with a company/brokerage firm that is important to Bedco. After she spoke, Attorney Newt Cunningham spoke to congratulate Judge Moore for a Leadership Award he had received recently from the Bonham Chamber of Commerce. 6. Discussion, consideration and action to approve
Proclamation recognizing the Texas Jewish Historical Society in Fannin County – County Judge for Malinda Allison: Judge Moore read the Proclamation and afterwards Commissioner Lane made the motion to approve the Proclamation with Commissioner Self seconding the motion. The motion passed. 7. Discussion, consideration and action regarding extending the Burn Ban for Fannin County – County Judge: Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson spoke to note there has been a significant drop in fires since the implementation of the burn ban noting the few fires that have occurred were attributed to farming equipment and not intentional burns. He stated due to the continued dry weather forecasts, he requested the burn ban be extended. After some discussion Commissioner Self made a motion to extend the burn ban for one week with Commissioner Lane seconding his motion. Before taking the vote Commissioner Self noted that at the Leonard Annual Picnic, the Leonard Fire Department will be monitoring the fireworks. Judge Moore added that with permission from the county and precautions in place, there are exceptions to the ban and anyone desiring information on exceptions can contact the county. The motion then passed to extend the Burn Ban another week. 8. Discussion regarding the Texas Department of Agriculture Community Development Block Grant for Gober MUD – Commissioner Precinct 4 for Jan Johnson of Gober MUD: Jan Johnson with Gober MUD spoke to explain the process behind the petitioning of the grant referred to in the agenda item. She noted that the grant only becomes available every 2 years and gave reasons why Fannin County will probably not qualify to receive the grant at this two-year cycle. With that in mind she wanted the court to know that Gober is still wanting to be sponsored for the grant and will be taking steps to apply whether that needs to be done this year or 2 years from now when it is up for consideration again. 9. Discussion, consideration and action regarding installing a No Parking sign on Amy Way cul-de-sac in Bonham – Commissioner Precinct 4: Commissioner Lackey explained why this was requested and questioned what steps would be needed to take on this. DA Glaser spoke to clarify a public hearing would be needed on this as well as other specifications. A citizen residing on the cul-de-sac spoke to relay his displeasure with the way parking is occurring on his street. Another citizen asked if this should be handled by Tx DOT. A citizen of Leonard commented noting the importance that a situation not exist which would hinder fire equipment maneuvering the cul-de-sac. Judge Moore stated a motion was not needed but a hearing would be set up on this. 10. Discussion, consideration and action regarding partial funding of repeater for southwest portion of the County – Commissioner Pre-
cinct 2 for City of Leonard Administrator: Commissioner Self noted this was involving dead zones in these areas that was hindering communication. He then asked City Administrator for Leonard, George Evanko to speak on this. Mr. Evanko noted that since these dead zones were brought to his attention, he has been seeking estimates for a repeater that would improve coverage for all first responders. He noted that he is seeking partial funding from all the entities that would benefit from the repeater in order to have the burden of the cost shared. He explained that he is asking for consideration from Fannin County to fund 50% of the deposit for the radio. After some discussion Commissioner Self made a motion that Fannin County confirm to be responsible for their portion of the funding if the other entities accept their duties as well. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Lackey and before the motion passed, Judge Moore noted the importance of improving communication for the Police Department, Fire Department in this area and how badly this is needed. After thanking Mr. Evanko for his work on this Judge Moore asked for a vote. The motion passed. 11. Discussion regarding Indigent Care Activity report for June 2022 – County Judge for Indigent Healthcare Director: Director of Indigent Health Care, Mark DeMay, began by reporting there had been a total of 250 inbound/ outbound calls and 27 in office appointments that resulted in 2 new patients, 2 pending applications and 8 referrals to other programs. He noted how one patient came off the program to go back to work and 2 patients came off the program as they were approved for disability. He explained how this revolving door of patients coming on and off the program is exactly how the program is supposed to work. He reported there was a total of 40 indigent claims paid for $11,705.71 and 49 inmate claims paid at $17,415.41. He also noted that at this time the department is under YTD (year to date) budget by $31,654. His accomplishments included meeting with Rebekah Irick of the Child & Family Guidance Center of Texoma to discuss eligibility requirements for their free mental health counseling. He commented on their variety of helpful programs which include an anger management class. He also met with a representative from TCOG to discuss their resources. He stated how by calling 211, one can obtain emergency food assistance, childcare assistance, education support and employment, housing assistance and transportation. On another note, he has obtained information for his patients for something not covered by Indigent Healthcare, hearing assistance. He listed the resources of Echo Research, Hearing America and Livingston Hearing Aids and added that those who are working and can’t afford hearing aids can also be helped by a vocational program with the TX Work Force. Here’s what you need to know about 988, the new mental health crisis hotline 3/30/21
By Cecilia Lenzen The Texas Tribune
Starting Saturday, people in need of any kind of mental health support can call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988. The new dialing code does not replace the already existing Lifeline, 1-800-273-8255, but it makes the resource easier to remember during emergencies. The shortened version may make the mental health resource more accessible to people experiencing distress, experts say. People in distress can also chat with a trained counselor by visiting 988lifeline.org. Here’s what you need to know about the new hotline. What is the 988 hotline? The new three-digit code is a direct line for people experiencing mental health distress to seek help from trained counselors. The hotline is staffed 24/7, allowing people to seek help at any time. In 2005, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration launched the National Suicide Preven-
tion Lifeline under the phone number 1-800-273-8255. Since then, it has received more than 20 million calls, according to the Lifeline website. The new dialing code 988 routes callers to the same service, but it will be easier to remember than the original phone number, said Margie Wright, executive director of the Suicide and Crisis Center of North Texas. Why is a new number needed? People might find it difficult to remember a 1-800 number when they’re experiencing mental health distress, Wright said. The shorter three-digit code “is better than having people try to remember a long number,” she said. “Once [the new number] gets out there and advertised, I think it will make things simpler.” The new 988 code is easy to associate with 911 and 211, the social service hotline. Blanca Garcia, director of mental health resources at the Grant Halliburton Foundation in Dallas, said this association will make it much easier for people
to remember the hotline dialing code during emergencies. 5/26/20 Who can call the new hotline? Anyone in the U.S. who needs mental health support or who is with someone in mental health distress can call or text the number to seek help. They do not need to be in danger of suicide to reach out to the lifeline. The same is true of the preexisting 1-800 number. About 3,309,000 adults in Texas are living with a mental illness, according to Mental Health Texas. And 754,000 adult Texans have had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year. Despite the high numbers of mental health illness in the state, 61% of Texans who needed mental health support in Texas did not receive any, according to Mental Health Texas. The new hotline is free to use, as is the 1-800 number. Can I still call the old hotline? Yes, the current Lifeline phone number, 1-800-2738255, will still remain available after the new three-digit code is
Texas will increase checkpoints for trucks crossing from Mexico after migrant smuggling deaths
By Patrick Svitek The Texas Tribune
Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday that Texas will add new checkpoints for trucks entering the state from Mexico after after over 50 migrants died in connection with an abandoned tractortrailer found in San Antonio. The Department of Public Safety “will create and implement a checkpoint strategy beginning immediately where they will begin targeting trucks like the one that was used where these people perished,” Abbott said during a news conference in Eagle Pass. DPS directer Steve McCraw suggested the checkpoints would be along “smuggling corridors” that connect ports of entry from Mexico to major Texas cities like San Antonio and Houston. Abbott declined to say where exactly the additional checkpoints will be, saying the state wanted to “surprise the cartels and the smugglers.” Additional details were unclear, including how different the new checkpoints would be from the expanded commercial vehicle inspections that Abbott ordered in April, snarling trade for days
along the border and costing the state $4.2 billion by one estimate. He eventually ended that policy as Mexican governors made commitments to better secure their side of the border. An Abbott spokesperson referred a request for comment to DPS. A spokesperson for the agency, Travis Considine, said in a text message that the inspections “won’t occur at POEs,” or ports of entry — which was the case in April. That suggests the checkpoints will happen further inland. McCraw said the agency would be taking some of its troopers inspecting vehicles at the international bridges “and mov[ing] them further out” for the new checkpoints. DPS is also bringing in “commercial vehicle enforcement strike teams” from outside the border region, he said. The San Antonio truck was discovered Monday evening on San Antonio’s Southwest Side. A Mexican official says there were 67 inside the trailer and 53 are dead. Three people were taken into custody after the discovery. The owners of a South Texas trucking company have said they believe the
truck found in San Antonio was “cloned” to look like one of theirs but that it is not. McCraw said DPS will be focusing on such trucks with the new checkpoints. U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo, told the Associated Press on Wednesday that the truck found in San Antonio had made it through a Border Patrol checkpoint along Interstate 35 northeast of Laredo, but he didn’t know if the migrants were in the trailer when it went through the checkpoint. “They’re using cloned trucks and vehicles that appear to be legitimate, that look like they’re legitimate, that’s easy to pass through the particular checkpoint, but I can assure you our troopers will be able to identify whether they’re legitimate or not and take action at that point in time,” McCraw said. After authorities found the truck Monday in San Antonio, Abbott quickly blamed President Joe Biden and his border policies. Abbott continued to blast Biden on Wednesday, claiming that the truck was “not inspected” at the Border Patrol checkpoint “because Border Patrol does not have the resources to be able to inspect all of the trucks.”
launched. What happens when I use the hotline? When people call, text or contact the hotline service via chat, they will be connected to trained counselors who are part of the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network, according to the Lifeline website. The network is made up of about 200 local crisis centers, and callers will usually be connected to the center closest to where they’re calling from, Garcia said. When people connect with the 24-hour service, the counselors will listen, provide support and connect callers to additional mental health resources if necessary. How will the new number increase access to mental health resources? Many people often call 911 when they need mental health support because they can’t remember the 1-800 Lifeline number, Garcia said. Every year, millions of 911 calls involve a person experiencing an emergency related to a mental health or substance use disorder, according to the Pew Re-
6/7/22
search Center. But police officers aren’t always trained to deal with mental health crises and can’t be expected to provide the proper support during those situations. “What I’m hoping is that now with 988, officers won’t be involved as much with some of these crisis calls,” Garcia said. She also noted that many communities, especially among people of color, won’t call 911 when experiencing mental health distress because they might not have good relationships with police. And if they didn’t have the 1-800 number memorized, they would have no one to turn to for help. Now, with a three-digit number that’s easier to remember, those communities may seek mental health support more often, Garcia said. Amy Grosso, a board member of the Central Texas chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, said she anticipates an influx of people calling the Lifeline when the new number becomes available Saturday. She said people are much more likely to use an emergency resource when it’s
widely talked about and easily memorized. Grosso used the rapper Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255,” named after the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, as an example. After Logic performed the song at the Grammys in 2018, the Lifeline saw a spike in calls that the British Medicine Journal said was a result of the song’s widespread attention. Hopefully, this new Lifeline code will also spark an increase in calls, Grosso said. Garcia hopes the new number will help continue national conversations on mental health. Putting the 988 number alongside 911 and 211 could help normalize it and make it a little less intimidating, she said. “Now we’re saying that physical health and mental health are both health, and it’s OK if you’re struggling with each and there’s a way for you to get immediate help,” Grosso said. “And it also helps people know that if it is a mental health crisis, that there is a number they can call specifically to get specific mental health help and be connected with the proper resources right off the bat.”

Sunday Morning Re-take
Hello everyone! We had a wonderful service in God’s house Sunday morning! Last week I mentioned the promise given unto us in 2 Chronicles 7:14. “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” Revival is much needed in our nation today, and this is the only way that God will send revival our way. As a nation, we must get our focus back on Him, where it really needs to be. That being said, I would like to share with you one of my favorite revival hymns, written by W.P. Mackay in the 1860’s. “We praise Thee, O God! for the Son of Thy love, For Jesus who died, and is now gone above. Chorus: Hallelujah! Thine the glory.
Hallelujah! amen. Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again. We praise Thee, O God! for Thy Spirit of light, Who hath shown us our Savior, and scattered our night. All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain, Who hath borne all our sins, and hath cleans’d ev’ry stain. Revive us again; fill each heart with Thy love; May each soul be rekindled with fire from above. If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Like we always say, visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day! Bro. Josh Stevenson Central Baptist Church Bonham, TX https://www.facebook.com/ cbcfannin
AUSTIN— As Texans hit the waterways across the state to recognize July Fourth, Texas Game Wardens were out in force to ensure everyone stayed safe on the water. “Texas Game Wardens partnered with thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country for Operation Dry Water to focus on impacts of alcohol on boaters during hightraffic weekends like July 4th,” said Cody Jones, Assistant Commander for Marine Enforcement with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “These efforts are represented in the work we did during the July 4th weekend.” In addition to issuing 1,560 citations and 1,976 warnings for various boating safety law violations, wardens arrested 49 individuals for Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) and filed eight other charges for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). Additionally, another 23 people were arrested for various other charges. Texas Game Wardens also conducted multiple search and rescues over the holiday weekend. Additionally, they assisted with 38 reportable boating accidents at several Texas lakes and rivers. Game wardens were involved statewide with numerous waterway assists or other incidents. In Hunt County, game wardens responded to a reported drowning in the
swim beach at West Tawakoni City Park. The patient was airlifted in critical condition but now is expected to make full recovery. Willacy County game wardens conducted a boating rescue just outside Port Mansfield Harbor. A recreational vessel capsized within the intercoastal waterway on the way into Port Mansfield. Game wardens rescued four occupants who were in the water without personal floatation devices (PFDs). All occupants were safely taken to shore without injuries. Game wardens patrolling South Padre Island encountered a boat with too many people on board. When wardens approached to conduct a safety check, the boat took on water over the bow and three passengers fell off. No one was injured and all passengers were transported safely to land. Texas Game Wardens also dealt with one boating fatality and 10 open-water fatalities on Texas waterways over the Independence Day weekend. The boating-related fatality occurred on Canyon Lake. Open-water fatality locations included the Lake Ray Hubbard, West Galveston Bay, Lake Houston, Lake Conroe, Guadalupe River, Lake Travis, Lake Texana, Canyon Lake and the Gulf of Mexico.

PATRICIA R. (WILKINSON) KIRKPATRICK Patricia ‘PK’ Kirkpatrick, 81, of Ladonia passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022. Patricia was born April 16, 1941, the daughter of Floyd Ezra Wilkinson and Esther Ruth (Killian) Wilkinson. PK was an amazing woman. She taught her four children unconditional love & how to be good, caring, involved parents. She was blessed to be part of a close and loving family. She owned her own plant store and she and her husband David also owned a telephone company. She was a member of the North Texas Cactus and Succulent Society. She was also a member of the Ladonia United Methodist Church as well as the youth leader there for 10+ years, helping to shape young hearts and bring them the message of Christ. And she worked tirelessly on the Ladonia City Council to improve the community where she lived and loved. She became a Texas Master Naturalist and was fascinated by fossils and hunted them for years in the North Sulphur River. She taught schoolchildren about fossils and brought her own fossils to her presentations, hoping to instill her love of fossils to future generations. (She made sure to drop fossils along their hunts so they could ‘find’ their own fossils). She showed her 4 children the definition of love & marriage - she married her husband David while he was in the Air Force, and they spent 55 years of wedded bliss together. ANTHA JO (NORTHCUTT) TONEY
Bonham, Texas -- Antha Jo (Northcutt) Toney, 88, of Bonham, TX was born August 9, 1933 in the Oakland Community, north of 7/19/2022 Bonham, to Jesse Lee Meadows and Lennie Belle (Thornton) Meadows. Jo went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday July 9, 2022. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Billy Joe Toney; father and mother; son, Rick Northcutt; sisters, June Hamilton and Evelyn Armstrong; and brother, Alvie Meadows. Jo was a trailblazer and respected businesswoman in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, when it wasn’t necessarily accepted for women to be aggressively negotiating the Retail, Manufacturing and Supply business sectors. She was building franchises for her Donut Shops, donut flour manufacturing/shipping and Products Supply Company in small West Texas towns, before she even knew what a franchise was. She opened her first Cafe, “Jo’s Cafe”, on the west side of the Bonham 7/19/2022 Square in 1961, while maintaining her Donut Flour & Products company in Gainesville, TX. She worked very hard, and she played hard when it was time to play. She enjoyed her visits to Las Vegas (once or twice a year), boating, dancing and always trying to get lucky with the lottery. She loved her two sons more than anything else in the world and she will be missed. Jo is survived by her son, Ray and wife Kathy; daughter-in-law Saleta Northcutt of Collinsville, TX; step-children, Billy Toney and wife Lynda of Utica, OK, Freda Laycock and husband Ed of Lowell, AR and Randall Toney and wife Pam of Alva, OK; grandchildren Jared Northcutt of Sherman, TX, Kristen Alderman of Springfield, MO, Kimberly Northcutt of Springfield, MO, DJ Dodson and wife Amanda of Collinsville, TX, Gabreilla Young and husband Michael of Collinsville, TX and Christina Nolan of Dallas, TX; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren and 5 nieces and nephews. Visitation for Antha Jo (Northcutt) Toney, 88, of Bonham, TX was held on Monday, July 18, 2022 at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham, TX from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham, TX. Bro. Kevin Towery officiated. Serving as pallbearers were Jared Northcutt, Jackie Thomas, Brandon Thomas, DJ Dodson, Michael Young, and Tanner Young. Cooper GREAT. Water lightly stained; 88 degrees; 2.50 feet low. In the summer heat fish the first few hours daylight for the best bites. Catfish are good off docks and shorelines with cut bait. Crappie are good on main lake brush piles and standing timber with jigs and minnows. Bass are fair early morning with topwaters, transitioning to deeper water structures midmorning with chatterbaits and crankbaits. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 75 degrees; 6.37 feet low. Crappie fishing on Lake Fork has been just about as hot as the weather this week. Still seeing a ton of fish on laydowns and brush in 13-23 feet of water. You can still catch a few fish on timber as well, but less numbers. The key has been to move around and find areas that have experienced less pressure. Move on if you see a bunch of fish slow to bite or on the smaller size. Minnows are still the hottest ticket in town for crappie but they can be caught on hand ties and soft plastics as well. Largemouth bass continue to be good early in the morning, but the bite tapers off by noon. Big worms Texas or Carolina rigged and big shaky heads are working best in 12-25 feet of water on points and humps. Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 88 degrees; 2.28 feet low. Lake Tawakoni is in full summer pattern this week and the fishing has been good. White bass and striped bass action has been good early with random schooling fish. After the morning bite, the fish are staging on humps or deeper points. Live bait or slab spoons are both working. Crappie action is very good with minnows out fishing jigs for limits. Fish in 12-18 feet of water over brush piles and other submerged structures. The eating-sized blue and channel catfish bite is off the charts. Prepared bait such as cheese based punch baits are putting the most fish in the boat fishing shallow and deep. Largemouth bass bite has slowed some. Still seeing fish caught on frogs early in the grass then transitioning to a shallow crankbait or fluke bite in 1-4 feet near docks, isolated rocks or other isolated structures. Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 82 degrees; 1.68 feet above. Hybrid bass are good with topwaters early for big fish, switching to slabs after the fish move down. Some shallow chasing but most catches coming in deeper water. Bait fish are out in the open water. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.

Game Warden Field Notes
Caught by the Tail A state trooper observed an alligator tail sticking out of an ice chest during a recent traffic stop, and contacted a Jasper County game warden. The trooper noted there were no tags or documentation on the tail. The warden made contact with the Hardin County resident and seized the alligator tail. Several citations are pending along with civil restitution. Here, Hold My Pistol Under the category “you can’t make this stuff up,” on June 11, a Concho County game warden received a report of two vehicles colliding and going off the bridge into the Colorado River. At about the same time, the McCulloch County Sheriff’s Office received a report of gunshots at the same bridge. The warden arrived on the scene first and found a car parked on the bridge deck, but did not see any damage to the vehicle or the bridge. He did observe a woman in the top of a nearby tree yelling for help and pointing toward the water. The warden directed her to climb down out of the tree, to which she said, “Here, hold my pistol.” She claimed her boyfriend’s car had gone off the bridge and that he was in it. She then provided the warden with her boyfriend’s cell phone number. The warden secured the handgun and called the

boyfriend, who assured him that he was okay, his car had not gone off the bridge, and he was just out fishing. When the warden asked why she was up a tree with a pistol, the woman claimed to have shot at some pigs and feared for her safety. She was taken into custody by McCulloch County sheriff’s deputies. Multiple charges are pending. No Fishing License, Big Problem In early June, a Harris County game warden was patrolling
for saltwater fishing violations by land when he observed a man fishing off a ferry launch with clearly posted signs of no fishing. Upon asking for his fishing license, the subject handed over his wife’s license and admitted he didn’t have one. Upon running an ID check, the warden learned that the unlicensed angler had a felony warrant out of Brazoria County. The subject was transported to Brazoria County and charges are pending for fishing under another person’s license.

Texans asked to conserve energy to protect the power grid for the second time in a week By Mitchell Ferman The Texas Tribune For the second time this week, the state’s power grid operator is asking Texans to turn up their thermostats to 78 degrees and to avoid using large appliances as it expects record-high demand for power amid ongoing scorching temperatures. It is asking for conservation from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A spokesperson for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, the state’s main power grid operator, said he does not expect rolling blackouts to happen Wednesday. The call for conservation
came because of higher-thanexpected outages at coal and natural gas-fired power plants, as well as low winds, as demand continues to rise because of higher-than-normal temperatures. “The fleet has been run extremely hard this year and especially this summer, so it’s not surprising that wear-and-tear is starting to bear out in the form of components breaking,” said Michele Richmond, executive director of the Texas Competitive Power Advocates, which represents power generators. Solar power, which has performed well this summer, was also struggling Wednesday to

produce as much electricity as expected, ERCOT said, because of some dark clouds over solar farms in West Texas. When Texans were asked Monday to conserve electricity, ERCOT said that appeal reduced demand on the power grid by 500 megawatts during the afternoon. ERCOT did not come close to implementing rolling blackouts. Power grids must keep supply and demand in balance at all times. When Texas’ grid falls below its safety margin of excess supply, the grid operator starts taking additional precautions to avoid blackouts. The first precaution is to ask the public to voluntarily cut back electricity usage. The next step is for the grid operator to tell the public the grid could be at risk of not having enough power to meet demand and ordering Texans to cut back electricity usage. If the grid’s conditions still don’t improve, ERCOT would then implement controlled, rotating power outages, in which Texans in some areas could lose power for up
to 45 minutes at a time. Power grids around the world are facing tests this summer as climate change has led to hotter temperatures and Russia’s war with Ukraine has strained fuel supplies. In Japan, officials asked residents in late June to conserve electricity during unusually hot weather. In the U.S., officials have warned about possible power outages this summer due to record heat and demand for power. In May, ERCOT asked Texans to conserve power during a heat wave that coincided with six power plant outages. Climate change has made Texas heat both hotter and longer lasting. The average daily minimum and maximum temperatures in Texas have both increased by 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit in the last 125 years. The state just saw its hottest December on record since 1889. In Houston, Saturday through Tuesday were the hottest consecutive four days on record, according to meteorologists with Space City Weather.

USDA issued $557.5 million in ERP payments to Texas farmers
Farmers nationwide have already received more than $4 billion through the Emergency Relief Program (ERP), representing nearly 67% of the more than $6 billion projected to be paid through this phase of
the program. Eligible farmers in Texas have received $557.5 million in funding to date. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) mailed out pre-filled applications in late May to farmers with crop
insurance who suffered losses due to natural disasters in 2020 and 2021. Commodity and specialty crop producers have until July 22 to complete applications.

“Over the course of the past two years, natural disaster events in Texas have resulted in catastrophic production and property losses for our agricultural producers,” Kelly Adkins, state executive director for FSA in Texas, said. “Although these payments will not make these producers whole, they will help alleviate some of the financial stressors brought on by these severe and devastating weather events.” USDA is implementing ERP as a two-phased program, with the first phase using existing claim data to provide relief expediently, and the second phase focusing on ensuring farmers not covered by other programs receive assistance. For phase one, USDA used crop insurance and Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) claim data. Both ERP and the previously announced Emergency Livestock Relief Program (ELRP) are funded by the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act, which President Biden signed into law in 2021. The law provided $10 billion to help agricultural producers impacted by wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, winter storms and other eligible disasters experienced during calendar years 2020 and 2021. Eligible livestock producers received ELRP payments totaling more than $590 million since the program was rolled out in late March. Livestock producers in Texas have received $61.2 million in ELRP payments to offset the impacts of extreme drought conditions. Pre-Filled Applications Eligible producers with eligible crop insurance claims have received pre-filled applications, which included eligibility requirements and pay-
ment calculations. Producers received a separate application form for each program year in which they experienced an eligible loss. Producers should check with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) at their local USDA Service Center to confirm eligibility and to ensure that all required farm program participation, adjusted gross income and conservation compliance forms are on file. Producers who have previously participated in FSA programs likely have these required forms already on file. ERP provisions allow for a higher payment percentage for historically underserved producers, including beginning, limited resource, socially disadvantaged and military veteran producers. To qualify for the higher payment rate, individuals must have a Form CCC-860, Socially Disadvantaged, Limited Resource, Beginning and Veteran Farmer or Rancher Certification on file. To receive a payment, producers must complete and submit their forms by the July 22 deadline. Once the completed ERP application for payment is submitted to and signed by the FSA, producers enrolled in direct deposit should look for their payment within three business days. Additional assistance through phase one FSA will be sending prefilled applications for about 9,000 producers nationwide with NAP coverage in midJuly. The federal crop insurance data used to populate ERP phase one pre-filled applications included claim data on file with USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) as of May 2, 2022. At that time, claim data for the Supplemental Coverage Option (SCO), Enhanced Coverage Option
(ECO), Stacked Income Protection Plan (STAX), Margin Protection Plan (MP) or Area Risk Protection Insurance (ARPI) were not complete, so crop/units including these coverage options were not included in the pre-filled ERP application form. In late summer 2022, updated claim information will be used to generate a second pre-filled application for those crop/ units on file with RMA not included in the first mailing. More information ERP covers losses to crops, trees, bushes and vines due to a qualifying natural disaster event in calendar years 2020 and 2021. Eligible crops include all crops for which crop insurance or NAP coverage was available, except for crops intended for grazing. Qualifying natural disaster events include wildfires, hurricanes, floods, derechos, excessive heat, winter storms, freeze (including a polar vortex), smoke exposure, excessive moisture, qualifying drought and related conditions. All producers who receive ERP phase one payments are statutorily required to purchase crop insurance or NAP coverage where crop insurance is not available for the next two available crop years. Producers should contact their local Service Center if they have questions. Additionally, other resources include: The second phase of both ERP and ELRP will fill gaps and provide assistance to producers who did not participate in or receive payments through the existing programs that are being leveraged for phase one implementation. Through proactive communication and outreach, USDA will keep farmers and stakeholders informed as program details are made available.

SPORTS SPORTS Returning to a Helm: Longtime Leonard v’ball assistant Fielden hopes to get veteran Lady Tigers back into postseason
By Rich Hilliard
LEONARD -- A brief departure from coaching several years ago started Sarah Fielden on the path to her next head volleyball job. “I actually [had gotten] out of coaching for a year [after that stint], when I was the assistant principal at Commerce High School,” said Fielden. “I realized I wasn’t ready to hang up my whistle yet, and I moved to Leonard where my husband (James Fielden) was [already] coaching football ... “I really enjoyed getting back into coaching and working with Coach (Lisa) Davis as an assistant,” she said. “It gave me the chance to remember why I love this sport and we worked really well together. “[My husband and I] built a house here and love it. Both of our two youngest children go to school in Leonard and we enjoy the small community here.” Leonard promoted Fielden to head volleyball coach this past spring,
when Davis, after nine years at the helm, took the same position at neighboring Class 2A Trenton. “I’m excited to take over the program and continue the positive environment that is already in place,” said Fielden. “We have three teams and a lot of parental support and a lot of interest in the volleyball program. “It’s great to continue and grow a program that Coach Davis spent so much time and energy on,” she said. “We are really going to get to work and strive towards getting back up in the top of the district. “I’m excited!” From 2010-2015, Fielden guided Commerce to a 145-42 record, as its head volleyball coach. A trip in 2012 to the regional final highlighted her Commerce tenure -- it took eventual State Abby Cavender sets the ball for Leonard champion Brock to stop her Lady on Oct. 5, 2021, during a home District Tigers’ advance that season. 11-3A volleyball match. Having never made the postseason in volleyball during the sports’ previous near dozen years of existence at Leonard -- started with sub-varsity play in 2002 -- Davis’ near decade at the helm quickly included a change in fortunes. During her second year, the Lady Tigers in 2014 contended for a postseason trip into the final match of district play. Leonard then in 2015 made its first of five consecutive bi-district appearances under Davis -- a narrow 25-23, 25-23, 25-16 loss to Alba-Golden -- after winning a play-in over Commerce to claim the fourth and final district playoff berth. As Leonard grew its postseason streak under Davis, her Lady Tigers also yearly mostly improved their finishes in district play: fourth (without need of a play-in) again, in 2016; third after a play-in win over Van Alstyne in 2017; runner-up in 2018 after a play-in win over Blue Ridge; and third place after winning a three-team play-in in 2019.
After a two-season absence, Leonard will look this fall to return to the postseason, competing for the second-consecutive district alignment in 11-3A with Bonham, Bells, Blue Ridge, Howe, Pottsboro and 2021 State-finalist Gunter. Leonard finished 11-3A play at 5-9 in 2021, winning its last two matches -- including a finale victory over Pottsboro, the district’s third-place postseason qualifier. “We have eight returning varsity players from last year: seven seniors and one junior,” said Fielden. “Abby Cavender [is] a four-year varsity starter and [is] our setter. “[Abby] will be the one who helps lead the team and push her peers to the next level,” she said. “They are a really close group of kids and these seniors have been with me a long time. “We are going to have to really turn on our competitive nature this season with such a tough district.”

A trip to 2A-I Whitewright on Sept. 9 and home game against 2A-II Simms James Bowie on Sept. 16 will complete non-district action. District 9-2A-I play will start on Sept. 30 at AlbaGolden, as Honey Grove will begin vying for its first postseason trip since 2019. Remaining district play includes: at Rivercrest on Oct. 7, home versus Quinlan Boles on Oct. 14, at Cooper on Oct. 21, home versus Wolfe City on Oct. 28 and home versus Como-Pickton on Nov. 4. Home scrimmages against 3A-II Lone Oak and 2AII Detroit/2A-I Tom Bean in August will help prepare Honey Grove for Fletcher’s first regular season at the helm.
HONEY GROVE -- Shane Fletcher oversaw a transformation at Class 3A-II Leonard. During his last 13 seasons, the Tigers made the football postseason 11 times -- highlighted by a trip to the State semifinals in 2013. Before his arrival in 2005, Leonard had last made the football postseason in 1998. Conversely, Fletcher takes over a Honey Grove program with a much shorter absence from the playoffs. The 2A-I Warriors will start their first regular season under Fletcher with home games against 3A-II Howe on Aug. 26 and 2A-II Frost on Sept. 2.
