Tom Thornton and Larry Standlee receive award on behalf of the Fannin County Historical Commission. Photo Sandy Hood ered in 2018. You can have fun viewing this history at https:// www.txfannin.org/ and sharing it with others. The commission was instrumental in making sure that cemeteries were preserved with the building of the new lake. Some cemeteries had to be moved to preserve them. The commission has been involved in the restoration process of the Fannin County Courthouse. They received historic artifacts discovered during the demolition of the inside in 2018 and many of the items are on display at the Fannin County Museum of History. The commission is an integral part of the museum. Also, a time capsule that was placed in the newly remodeled courthouse in 1966 was removed in 2018 and the items that were inside were loaned to the FCHC for scanning and safe keeping. An index of the items can be found on their website. The commission is involved in many more projects and I encourage you to go to their website or visit them and the museum at 1 North Main Street in Bonham. Both are located in the historic 1900 Texas and Pacific Railway Depot. The museum offers fossils from the Sulphur River, rare Indian artifacts and displays relating to pioneer days and the growth of the communities of Fannin County. The commission meets monthly on the third Tuesday at 6:00pm at the commission’s office. Anyone interested in the history of Fannin County is encouraged and welcomed to attend. The commission’s phone number is 903-583-5947. Early Ad Deadline Wednesday, July 3 @ Noon

From My Life to Yours: 5/2/17
A Declaration of Dependence
By Bro. Bill Beasley On December 12, 1942 I spent the day in Houston, Texas when I made the commitment to become a member of the 308th College Training Detachment at Texas A&M. This decision involved me in the Army Aviation Unit preparation to combat duty in the European Theater of Operation. On May 30th having completed my training I made the flight of my life – solo Navigator on a B-24 heavy bomber, our route was flying the North Atlantic from Nova Scotia to Nutts Corner, Ireland – a distance of 2800
miles – all over water. I leaned heavily on my learning and the strength of fellow crew members. As we approach the observation of July Fourth, I find myself renewing my recognition of dependence on a number of things. We are dependent on our great country to provide protection in terms of manpower and military arsenals. We are dependent on millions of young men and women who gave their all on fields of battle, in
the skies and the water around the world. While July 4th, 1776 is the day we celebrate the Declaration of Indepen-
dence, it is also the day I acknowledge my dependence, in both God and country. I’m grateful to God for life preservation. I’m grateful to America for the privilege of calling this home since my birth in 1922.

LOVE PEOPLE UNCONDITIONALLY
WE BELIEVE
In the expository preaching of the Bible; the inspired inerrant Word of God. That God is manifest in three Persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit That Salvation is by Grace through Faith alone. That the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and reveals sinners to Christ who is the one and only savior. That the church is the body of Christ made up of those who have put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. That the Great Commission is our mandate until Christ returns. I know many of you have fresh tomatoes now, and this recipe is for you! I sometimes look for unique recipes and this is one of them. You just gotta try this one! TOMATO PIE 1 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust, baked Ripe tomatoes Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat oven to 350°. Place a layer of sliced ripe tomatoes in the bottom of the baked pie crust. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, basil, chives and bacon. Repeat layers until pie crust is full. Mix mayonnaise and grated cheese together and spread over the top, covering it completely to the edges. Bake 30 minutes or until lightly brown. The purpose is not to cook the tomatoes, just to heat pie through. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

Independence Day By Edwina Lane
with King George. At this year’s Fannin County Armed Forces Day Dinner LTC (R) Allen West spoke of this moment and how important it was then and continues to be today. It was not until July 4, 1776, that our nation was born by declaring our Independence from England. We’ve all heard Patrick Henry’s “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death” speech. Like so many of us, I have at times, taken our freedoms for granted. While reflecting during Carry the Load, I realized I can no longer continue to do so. Especially after hearing LTC West share how precious our freedom truly is and how easily it can be taken if not for those who are prepared to fight to maintain it.
1/3/17
As we prepare to celebrate our nation’s Independence, I have come to understand just how precious our liberties are and the cost of keeping them. Blood, sweat and tears! After joining my brother for the Carry the Load march this past Memorial Day, I’ve had time to reflect on that experience. Now that Independence Day is upon us my eyes are open wider than they have ever been. It was April 19, 1775 when “The shot heard round the world” echoed across the battlefields of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. A single shot that night began our nation’s fight for Independence after years of pleading

So, this 4th of July, stop for just a moment and reflect on these freedoms. Have you taken them for granted as well? I want to leave you with the words from the father of our country, George Washington. “We should not look back unless it is to derive useful lessons from past errors, and for the purpose of profiting by dearly bought experience.” Let us heed those words and use the lessons from our past. Let’s forge ahead with the same zeal that gave birth to our nation and take nothing for granted anymore.

Storytime with Dan the Donkey July 4th and 18th Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site
By Kathy Lathen, Educator/ Interpreter This month, please join Dan the Donkey and his friends at the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site, 890 West State Highway 56 in Bonham, Texas, as they explore agriculture, nature, history, and the outdoors with children’s literature. On July 4th, we will be celebrating Independence Day with stories and music. Later in the month, on July 18th, we will have stories in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing. These free
programs are designed for children ages 3-6 years of age who must be accompanied by their parent or caregiver. Siblings are welcome too. For more information and to sign up, please contact Marlene Concepcion at (903) 583-5558 or stop by our Visitor Center. The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site tells the real story of Sam Rayburn, one of the most powerful and influential politicians of the 20th century, in his authentic 1916 home. Preserved as a period time capsule, the two-story home contains all original Rayburn furnishings and housewares. The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site is one of 22 historic attractions operated by the Texas Historical Commission. For more information, visit www.visitsamrayburnhouse. com.

Fannin County Folks & Facts Now Online at the Portal to Texas History
By Larry Standlee
The Fannin County Historical Commission is pleased to announce that Fannin County Folks & Facts is now online at the Portal to Texas History: https://texashistory.unt.edu/. This book, which was compiled by the Bonham Public Library in 1977, is the major biographical reference book of Fannin County families. It also contains many photographs. This book has been available online at the Fannin County GenWeb site (txfannin.org) with an index for many years, but now it is fully searchable on the Portal. This book, along with newspapers and other books, was added to the Portal with a Rescuing Texas History grant received by the Fannin County Historical Commission.

On Saturday, June 15, 2019 the descendants of Paten Eli Curtis gathered at Lake Bonham Pavilion, Bonham Texas to celebrate and catch up. A pot-luck lunch of great food (we really need to bring recipes for things so we can share that good stuff!) was enjoyed before having a bit of a business meeting. There were 25 in attendance throughout the day. Work caused some to have to leave early,
or get in later than the group shot, but that is the way it goes. Life happens. Speaking of Life Happenings - we celebrated several graduations, great grades and accomplishments from some littles, remembered those we have lost since our last gathering, and planned next year’s fete. Longest distance traveled went to Lyle and Dilda, youngest getting there went to Ethan, and bingo was enjoyed by several. Next year, plan on June 6, 2020 at the same location - Lake Bonham Pavilion, Bonham TX. Local cousins especially encouraged to come. For more information, contact Sarah Richardson at 903647-0281 or Cindy Mize at 918-277-9586.

CHOOSE WISELY PROFESSIONALLY MANAGED INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS with NO Commissions!
Securities offered through Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. member FINRA/SIPC Investment Advisory Services offered through Raymond James Financial Services Advisors, Inc.
In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

More Information7/2/19 On December 20, 2018, President Trump signed into law the 2018 Farm Bill, which provides support, certainty and stability to our nation’s farmers, ranchers and land stewards by enhancing farm support programs, improving crop insurance, maintaining disaster programs and promoting and supporting voluntary conservation. Teens Get Lesson in Game Law On May 19, a game warden was approached by an individual in a parking lot in Abernathy claiming to have information regarding a deer that had been poached within the last hour. The informant gave the warden a vehicle description, a license plate, and the first name of the suspected poacher. After searching for about an hour, the warden located the parked vehicle and made contact with the juvenile driver. The driver quickly admitted to being involved in shooting a mule deer about an hour prior. The subject gave the warden six other names, all juveniles, who were also involved. The driver also told the warden where the deer had been dumped. The warden was able to locate the deer, the property where the deer was shot, and all the juveniles involved. The juveniles admitted to shooting the deer from the county road on property they did not have permission to be on, retrieving the deer, then dumping it in another part of the county. Citations and civil restitution pending. Drink More Water, Less Beer Next Time Bastrop County game wardens were patrolling the Colorado
River when they received a call concerning a kayaker who was on an island and in need of medical attention. It so happened that the wardens were close by and arrived quickly to the distressed kayaker’s location. The kayaker was in a fetal position on the sand and stated that he was feeling very ill and his abdomen was in immense pain. The wardens assessed the situation and believed the kayaker was suffering from dehydration. The kayaker admitted to drinking beer and little to no water. The wardens placed the kayaker in a life jacket, covered him with a cold towel, gave him some water, and transported him to shore where EMS was waiting.

Sam Rayburn FFA receives Grants for Growing funding from National FFA Organization
INDIANAPOLIS (Day, Month, Date, 2019/National FFA Organization) – The Sam Rayburn FFA chapter in Ivanhoe, Texas has been awarded $5,000.00 as part of the Grants for Growing program. The nationwide program, sponsored by Tractor Supply Company, provides grant funds to local FFA chapters to support the development or improvement of agricultural education projects that enhance the classroom experiences for students through chapter engagement activities. Sam Rayburn FFA will utilize funds from the Grants for Growing Grant program to fence 90 acres behind the agriculture science classroom facilities. Fencing the 90 acres is the start to a long term goal of eventually purchasing commercial cattle for students to utilize for Supervised Agriculture Experience projects and as learning opportunities in Sam Rayburn FFA’s classes. Sam Rayburn FFA is excited and thankful for this opportunity for our FFA members. The program provided approximately $907,000 to FFA chapters in 49 states. Funding is provided through consumer donations made during checkout at a Tractor Supply Company store by purchasing a $1 FFA Paper Emblem. The fundraising period aligns with National FFA Week in February. The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 669,989 student members who belong to one of 8,630 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Major James Manis. 4 Public Forum: • Major James Manis shared history on Private First Class (PFC) Harvey Ray Manor (DOB 11/15/21) from Dodd City. PFC Manor entered the Army in 1942. He served in the 18th Infantry Division in North Africa and Sicily before being transferred to England to prepare for the invasion of France. He was mortally wounded DDay on the Beaches of Normandy and passed away on June 15, 1944. Among his awards were the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He is buried in the Dodd City Cemetery. Major Manis set up a display table for the viewing of medals and other items in memory of PFC Manor. Major Manis then shared that Miriam Amanda Ferguson (AKA Ma Ferguson) was the first woman governor of Texas and the second woman governor in United States history. She served from 19251927 and 1933-1935. She was born in 1875 and passed away from heart failure on June 25, 1961. • Johnny D & Carol White presented each commissioner, Judge Moore and Barbara McCutcheon with a framed picture of the groundbreaking from the Historical Courthouse Ground-
breaking Ceremony. • Samantha Lumpkins with Homestead Winery and Ivanhoe Ale Works informed the court about the Lake Fannin Benefit Concert to raise funds for the volunteers to continue the great work that they are doing. The event was Saturday (June 29th). • Sheriff Johnson stated that there will be a new warden at the Fannin County Detention Center. Warden Wilson will be going to Bowie County, which is home for him. about safety and right now it would not be safe for anyone to drive over this bridge. There is not a lot of money in the budget to fix it right now. Commissioner Whitlock stated that he has spoken with FEMA and there is another bridge that is closed down and possibly the money allotted for that bridge can go to help repair the bridge at Caney Creek. Gregory Hall from the audience stated that Caney Creek Bridge has historical significance. He said that this same problem happened to the south end of the bridge a few years ago and that it may take the same kind of repair they did then to fix the current problem. There will be a lot of engineering involved and some heavy rock may be needed. In the meantime, there are cows that are on the other side of the bridge that need attention every day. Is there any temporary fix that could be implemented to help take care of the cows? Last season, Fannindel, a 6-3 regional round qualifier, won its first district title and bi-district game in six-man football since doing likewise in 2013 also under Gabe Lane who returned last year to the school and football program helm. While not favored to also make the six-man playoffs, Savoy’s Jake Popowski earned the
312. Also, second-year Bonham head football coach John Fish made the magazine’s “Texas 40 Under 40” -- a listing of “The Best Young Football Coaches In The Lone Star State” which included college and high school coaches. Likewise, the publication foresees another postseason trip for Honey Grove out of 6-2A (I). Trel Pruitt, a 2018 Whataburger Super Team candidate, returns for Honey Grove, which with a second-straight bi-district appearance last year made its first consecutive postseason trips since 2010-12. Meanwhile, Leonard will just miss a postseason return out of 9-3A (II), while Trenton will again struggle in 5-2A (I), according to the magazine.
