From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 Testing for Classification
By Bro. Bill Beasley Early in the second year of my active military days much of my training was spent in testing aptitude testing. When I had enlisted on Dec 12th, 1942, I
had expressed a desire to become a pilot. I was assigned to the 308th College Training Detachment and sent to a base in Texas. It was while there that I was given my first flight instructions. My thought was “I am on my way.” I received 10 hours of flight time with an instructor flying an interstate Kadet - a 65hp airplane. It was my first experience and I was tested for my ability to withstand unusual maneuvers that would take place in the air such

as loops, stalls, spins. An emergency reaction classification was just ahead and I would take my instruction in one of three position choices: pilot training, bombardier training, or navigation training. The testing program that I had undergone would greatly influence how I would be classified. I was to face my first disappointment. At the time of classification, I was denied the opportunity for pilot training, when I voiced a question as to

Every now and then I get recipes from my golf friends that I meet at golf tournaments. This recipe is one of them. Many of these ladies are retired and eat healthy. They will bring fresh fruit for a snack on the golf course, unlike others like me. These ladies have inspired me to start eating yogurt and bananas for breakfast. I must admit, I do feel better by just that one small change in my diet. This recipe is from one of those ladies, LeJean Beale who plays golf out of Eldorado in McKinney, who is a picture of health. The next time I’m in the metroplex, I may purchase some of these items that I can’t get here, and give it a try. How about you? HONEY GRANOLA Dry Ingredients: 3 ½ cups rolled oats 2 cups raw sunflower seeds 2 cups chopped walnuts 2 cups slivered almonds 1 cup chopped pecans ½ cup unprocessed wheat bran ¼ cup each sesame, flax and chia seeds ½ tsp. salt 1 cup coconut Wet Ingredients: 1 cup safflower oil ½ cup honey 1 tbsp. Agave syrup 1 tsp. vanilla 1 tsp. almond extract Preheat oven to 350°. Mix all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Heat together the wet ingredients in microwave. Do not boil! Pour heated wet ingredients over dry ingredients, stir to evenly coat and spread in large pan with sides. Bake 5 minutes and stir, 5 minutes more and stir, etc. until toasty and brown. (Watch closely towards the end, so you don’t burn the granola.) Cool thoroughly and store in an air-tight container. If desired, after granola has cooled, you may stir in 1 cup of raisins, craisins, etc. NOTE: This is great with yogurt and over your favorite breakfast cereal!
their 23rd annual School Supply Drive. Students in Fannin County will head back to class starting as early as August 14. This year, there are several new and different aspects of the Children’s Center’s School Supply Drive. New this year is that the give-away day is on a Saturday and will only be on one day. Something that has not changed is that the drive is open to all needy kids in Fannin County. Families in need can come to the Children’s Center at 112 W. 5th in Bonham on Saturday, August 10 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm to sign up and receive supplies. Parents or other caregivers should bring the child’s social security card and some proof of need, such as Medicaid card, food stamps or paycheck stub. Another new twist to the
diapers and many other items and services available for those families getting school supplies. One thing that has not changed is that the Children’s Center will need the generosity and support of the local community to make this effort possible. “As always, every contribution is appreciated and needed” said Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Children’s Center. The center is now accepting paper, notebooks, pencils, folders and other school supplies on the local school supply lists. Barber said, “Donors can also donate cash and leave the shopping to us. We will use it to buy what is most needed and we will stretch the donation farther by using our tax-exempt status when making the purchases.”
this year. This effort depends on contributions from many different individuals, churches, businesses and other local organizations. Items needed include: notebook paper, pens, pencils, three-ring notebooks, folders with and without brads, spiral notebooks, rulers, scissors, markers, crayons, red pens and pencils, highlighters, glue sticks and bottles, erasers, backpacks, construction paper, manilla paper, pencil boxes and bags and other supplies from area lists. Contributions can be delivered to the center at 112 West Fifth Street, Bonham, TX anytime they are open from Monday – Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Checks can be made out to FCCC and should include a brief notation that the gift is for
USDA Loans and Grants Available for Local Home Repairs and Purchases
On July 13th, 2019 - Pastor Big John Salem of the Wild Horse Creek Church hosted a one-hour class on Federal Home Repair Loans, Grants and Mortgages. Twenty-one Fannin County Residents learned that USDA here in Texas has a budget this year of approximately $82,000,000 of very favorable Grants, Loans and Mortgages for Home Repair & Purchases and how to apply. How favorable? Grants are not paid back. Loans are 1% per year fixed for 20 years and mortgages are 3% per year fixed for 33 years. A new house mortgage of $85,000 payment, even with Taxes and Insurance the payment is less than you would expect to pay for rent. It was a powerful hour. Three families are pursuing
a Home Repair Loan and/or Grant. Three families learned that a new home was possible. In only one-hour the opportunity for a better life was extended to six families. And when finished, it could result in over a quarter million dollars added to Fannin County Economy. That money will create better living conditions, improved property values and a lot of employment opportunity. Only three of the twentyone did not qualify. How many families in your congregation deserve a safe and healthy home? Odds are they can qualify with your help, our help and USDA. Last year, the USDA had a comparable amount of money available and regretfully a large part was returned to Washington. That should never happen again.
But we need your help, for your congregation to claim as much as they can of this opportunity! But that requires them to complete three simple steps: 1. Become aware of the opportunity. 2. Learn how to qualify. 3. Take Action to secure funding. With your help, we can complete all Three Steps in a one one-hour class. In anticipation of you saying “Yes!” The one-page class outline has been attached. Call me Wayne Knipe, 214-926-9592 and Schedule a Class Date and Time. We both know, you have members that need and deserve this help. Be Safe & God Bless. By Wayne Knipe

torture. Both knees had to be operated on because he could hardly walk. They had to practically force feed him protein, vitamins and of course food. He was not use to eating any more. His stomach was so tiny it would not hold much. James explained that he needed help getting his mind straight. “I was dangerous. After you live like an animal for so long, you begin to act like an animal. But, I never gave up and never wanted to give up while in South Vietnam. Some of the men wanted to give up but could not and others wanted to give up and did. It was pure torture.” James shared that he had forgotten what it was like to feel good. He was not able to talk to other people when he came home because he had forgotten how.

It has not stopped. It has not let up. It is with me every day.” James knows that he is fortunate to have made it home. A lot of men did not. “The worst thing you can do is not talk about it. Press release - If you like being out in nature or playing in the dirt, you might be interested in joining the Bluestem Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist (TMN). Our organization was formed in 2012 with just ten members but has grown into a flourishing circle of almost 50 people. We are a corps of well-informed volunteers who provide education, outreach and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within Grayson County. We are engaged in all kinds of volunteer work for Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge,
eral field trips to learn about the Denison Dam or the restoration of a sand pit. We will even go on a fossil hunt. All of our classes are taught by outstanding teachers from TMN, Austin College, Southeastern Oklahoma State College, or Grayson College. Our classes begin in midAugust and run through the first week in December. They are held at either Hagerman, Eisenhower or Grayson County Courthouse. The classes are held on various Tuesday and Thursday evenings and some Saturdays. The cost is $100, which include the TMN book, all classes and dues for 2019. For further information, check out our web site at http:// txmn.org/bluestem, or our Facebook page at Bluestem Chapter of Texas Master Naturalist. You can also e-mail me directly at cathyvanbebber@gmail.com.
Texas Agri-Life and Eisenhower State Park. At Hagerman, we are tram tour drivers, Butterfly Garden docents, trail maintainers, blue bird nest monitors, bird census counters and school group leaders. At Eisenhower, we are restoring a pocket prairie and helping with kids’ activities, such as Fishing at Night or Astronomy. For Texas Agri-Life, we present seminars which are free and open to the public. Past topics have been All About Bees, Native Texas Landscaping and Golden Algae. To become a Texas Master Naturalist, you will attend our Initial Training Sessions, where you will learn about Entomology, Herpetology, Geology, Mammalogy, Ecological Systems, Ornithology, Rangeland and Forest Ecology, Archaeology, Ichthyology, Weather, Wetland Ecology and the Nature of Naming. 7/16/19 Commissioners Court - Courthouse 7/23/19 Restoration Projected Cost: $17.5 Million to Complete Current Estimate: $26,965,271 to Complete
By Sandy Hood
1 Establish Quorum – The regular Commissioners Court was called to order by Judge Moore on Tuesday, July 16, 2019. A quorum was established as all commissioners and the judge were present. 2 Invocation – Invocation was given by Pastor Michael Haney of the First Baptist Church of Dodd City. 3 Pledges – Pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags were led by Judge Moore. 4 Introductions – Judge Moore thanked John Vick, representing Senator Bob Hall and Jan Cooper, Mayor of Ladonia for being present. 5 Public Forum: • Newt Cunningham explained to the court that he witnessed a contractor come before the court and indicate that if the county signed a contract with them that they would bring the courthouse project in under budget based on the plans they had been presented. Based on Newt’s understanding, that has not happened and he thinks that we are going to have to stretch, move and “cast our nets on the other side of the boat.”
• Dale McQueen suggested that Commissioners Court bring in a financial adviser. Please read his Letter to the Editor in this edition of the Leader on page 3. 6 Consideration and Action to approve County Treasurer’s June 2019 Financial Report – County Judge for County Treasurer – David Woodson stated that receipts for June 2019 were $606,062.14. Commissioner Whitlock made a motion to approve the report. Commissioner Magness seconded. Motion carried. 7 Consideration and Action to approve County Treasurer’s June 2019 Investment Report – County Judge for County Treasurer – Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve the report. Commissioner Whitlock seconded. Motion carried. 10 Discussion, Consideration and Action to sign an agreement with Rene Bates Auctions to auction off surplus items housed in a warehouse at the Treasurer’s office. week. 12 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve and sign an Order closing nine (9) county roads in Precincts 3 and 4 – Commissioner Precinct 3 – Alan Hendrix of Freese and Nichols presented an order to the Commissioners Court to close 9 roads. The 9 road closures were listed in the Fannin County Leader Newspaper on July 16, 2019. Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve. Commissioner Lackey seconded. Motion carried. 13 Discussion, Consideration and Action as a recommendation from the Bois d’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission to notify utility companies of the permitting process surrounding Bois d’ Arc Lake - County Judge – Judge Moore stated that it has come to the attention of the Bois D’ Arc Lake Planning and Zoning Commission that there has been some building happening in the area within 5,000 feet of the projected shoreline of the new lake and that maybe some of the building may be happening without the correct permits. A letter has been drafted to send to the utility companies that outline the procedures and steps to take regarding utilities for new buildings in this area and what to do in case of noncompliance. A building permit is needed unless there is an exemption. Utilities will not be able to be turned on if there is non- compliance. Commissioner Magness made a motion to notify utility companies. Commissioner Whitlock seconded. Motion carried. If you have a question about building permits please call Lita Huffman at 903-449-4220. 14 Discussion, Consideration and Action as a recommendation from the Bois d’ Arc Lake Zoning Commission to approve the addition of a new subsection to the Bois d’ Arc Lake Regulation Manual - 8.01.G Resubmittal of Rezoning Applications; an applicant shall not submit a rezoning request if the same or similar rezoning request has been considered and adjudicated by the Commissioners Court within the previous six months County Judge - Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve. Commissioner Self seconded. Motion carried. 15 Discussion regarding road maintenance improvements on CR 3715, CR 3730 and CR 3731 – Commissioner Precinct 4 – Mr. McDonald spoke for himself and his neighbors regarding concerns about the roads mentioned. They would like for Commissioner Lackey to meet with them to see the roads, assess the roads and repairs needed and to set a timeframe to complete the repairs. Commissioner Lackey’s response was a video of the roads, a list of maintenance in the past 48 month and a list of scheduled work to be done in the next 6 months.

16 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve grant application to develop a mitigation plan for emergency disasters in Fannin County and have County Judge sign on behalf of Fannin County – County Judge – Jerry Huffman – Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve the grant application that will be used to write a Mitigation Program. Commissioner Whitlock seconded. Motion carried. 17 EXECUTIVE SESSION: Consultation with Attorney - a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Section 551.0725 of the Government Code for deliberation regarding contract negotiations where deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the County’s interests with a third party – regarding Courthouse contracts and proposals, Technology improvement scope contracts and proposals with Fortium Partners and the EMS contract with Fannin County County Judge – Commissioners Court was in Executive Session from10:12am to 11:49am. 18 Discussion, Consideration and Action regarding Courthouse contracts and proposals – County Judge – Judge Moore had the following to say regarding the courthouse: • Proposals have come in at a lot more than expected, $26,965,271.00. • There were some good proposals and there were some that were not good at all. • They are going to ask for new bids on several of the work projects. • A meeting with Texas Historical Commission (THC) is set up to negotiate modifications to cut down on costs. There is a meeting Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at 2:00pm and Fannin County Historical Commission will be a part of that meeting too, • Turner Construction is meeting with Architexas on how some of the costs can be cut down. • We would really like to get some local contractors to bid. • We are going to stay on top of this and see what we can do to fix it. • Next week Turner Construction will bring some proposals to us that we can approve for some of the work. Commissioner Lackey stated that they are all shocked and quite frankly it is almost impossible to get people to come to Fannin County to do this work. Unfortunately, it costs a lot of money to do some of the stuff that THC is asking in the restoration of the courthouse. Some of the bids were actually better than what we thought they would be and that is a good thing. We will try and lock those bids in. Other bids are just unbelievable. 19 Discussion, Consideration and Action regarding Technology improvement scope contracts and proposals via Fortium Partners - County Judge – This item was passed. 20 Consideration and Action to approve payment of bills County Judge for County Auditor – Commissioner Whitlock made a motion to pay the bills. Commissioner Self seconded.
Motion carried. 21 Discussion, Consideration and Action to cancel the July 30, 2019 Commissioners Court Regular Meeting – County Judge – Commissioner Magness made a motion to cancel Commissioners Court on July 30th. Commissioner Whitlock seconded. Motion carried. 22 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: • Commissioner Whitlock had no comments. • Commissioner Self thanked everyone for attending and for staying so long. • Commissioner Magness had no comments. • Commissioner Lackey told everyone that he appreciated them attending. Judge Moore stated that there will be Touch a Truck event at the Bonham Library on July 31st from 10:00am to noon. They would like any commissioner that could bring a truck over to please do so. This is a hands on activity for children. Judge Moore stated that some people have financial savvy or other good ideas, and he encourages opinions on the courthouse and other things. Alicia Whipple and the judge have been working on the budget for the last 3 week, going over it line by line. The budget is a challenge and they have reached out to Texas Association of Counties for some guidance and are also looking at some others for help and ideas.

Securities offered through Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. member FINRA/SIPC Investment Advisory Services offered through Raymond James Financial Services Advisors, Inc.
In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

New Rebels’ baseball manager brings big-school, playing experience to SR equated the third round. Each three-deep advance under Mauppin started for Sam Rayburn with an undefeated district title -- the last coming as the Rebels allowed only one run during 12-2A play. He and his staff garnered the district coaching superlative each season. Last spring, Sam Rayburn reached the bi-district playoffs after a third-place district finish in 12-2A for its fifth-consecutive postseason under Mauppin. His replacement, Putman, will bring to the Rebels a past which includes large-school coaching experience and personal success playing the sport. He comes to Class 2A Sam Rayburn from 5A Sherman where he served as a varsity assistant and pitching coach for a year. “Pitching is my niche,” said Putman. Prior to that, as a varsity manager, Putman led Dallas Adamson during his lone season there and first at a baseball helm, to an 11-1 district title in 2016, earning the 13-5A coaching superlative. During four years at now6A Round Rock Westwood, he coached hitters the first couple of years and pitchers the last two. During his six years, Mauppin turned around a baseball program -- a postseason constant before and into the start of the current century -- that had spent nearly a decade outside the playoffs upon his arrival. Mauppin, in his second season, coached Sam Rayburn in 2015 to its first postseason since 2006 -- the first of five-consecutive advances. Class 2A-I Honey Grove will look in 2019 to end the decade as it started it -- with three-consecutive postseason trips. A game at 3A-II Bells on Aug. 30 will start pre-district play for the Warriors, who were again a bi-district finalist last fall during
veteran head coach Glen Schuelke’s first season at
the helm. The first full month will include more pre-district games: versus 3A-II Whitewright (9/6), at 3A-II Alba-Golden (9/13), at 2AII Maud (9/20) and versus 2A-II Clarksville (9/27). A final tune-up game will follow on Oct. 4 at 2A-II Cumby, before District 6-2A (I) games at Wolfe City (10/11), versus Quinlan Boles (10/18) and at Como-Pickton (10/25) to close the second full month of games. Two weeks later, Rivercrest will visit on Nov. 8 to complete district play and the regular season. If Honey Grove qualifies for a third-straight trip to the playoffs later in November, the Warriors will look for their first postseason win since 2012’s advance to the then-named 1A Division-I regional round.
trips. “I got to learn a lot under him,” said Putman. At now-6A Pflugerville Hendrickson, he previously served for a year as the hitting coach for an area-finalist team which was ranked No. 7 in 4A during that season. Putman started his coaching career as head jayvee manager and a varsity assistant at now6A Wylie where his duties included hitting philosophy and working with catchers. He completed his two-year playing career at the University of Texas at Dallas where, as a senior, his honors as a catcher in 2007 included all-conference, all-region and all-regional tournament first-team notoriety as well as garnering a Gold Glove at the position from Rawlings. He also received UT-Dallas’ player of the year honor. Putman finished with a flourish at UT-Dallas after only being an all-conference honorable mention there in 2006. During his first of two years at Texas Wesleyan, the 2001 Dallas Jesuit graduate garnered first-team all-conference status at catcher and the team offensive most valuable player award. He played under the guidance of manager Mike Jeffcoat and assistant Toby Harrah -- a couple of former Texas Rangers. Note: Matt Putman will also assist with Sam Rayburn High School boys basketball.

The City of Bonham will be showing off the new Splash Pad that is under construction sometime in August. This is very exciting news for the children that live in Fannin County and for those visiting
Bonham. The Splash Pad has been a dream of the Bonham City Council for many years now. Several people and businesses are helping this dream become a reality. BEDCO (Bonham Economic Development Corp) made a $50,000 contribution. The Splash Pad will have several amenities that include a Sneaky Soaker, a Water O, a Cyclone, a Geyser GS and a Lily Pad. Stay tuned for more updates in the future.
Letter to the Editor Dear People, I think I have found the answer to the immigration problem we are having in the United States. All the people that are for this, let them take a family of immigration in their home, take care of their children, feed them, send them to school, buy them a car, pay for their medical, then when they get on their own, pay them a monthly amount to live on. Then when they get old enough to retire, give
them ½ of your S.S. If you worked and paid into the system. God created their country to live in. I agree with Trump, go back and help straighten your country out or government. I really doubt it if people would take immigration in their home, and take the responsibility. Trump is just about the only one we have in the White House that will stand up for what is right. The other side just drags him down. Respectfully, George P McClellan Jr.
