Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo
The Kueckelhan Ranch Rodeo is one of the most entertaining events in Fannin County each year.
7036 N State Highway 78, Bonham, TX
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 27, 28, 29 ● 8pm nightly.
Anthony Lucia will be back as the announcer this year!
The rodeo is fun for all agesand a family tradition for some!
In 1955 while in college, Haynes Kueckelhan started a little friendly competition among local cowboys in and around Fannin County. That local competition has grown into an annual event on the Kueckelhan family working ranch held the last weekend of July. The Kueckelhan Rodeo attracts thousands of spectators across the nation and a few foreign countries eager to
catch a glimpse of modern-day rodeo competition reflecting western days of old.
The gates open at 6:30 p.m. nightly. Local 4-H clubs operate concessions that fund their annual activites. Other venders offer photo opportunities, mechanical bull rides, and rodeo merchandise. At 8:00 p.m., the evening begins with a pre-rodeo demonstration
of precision horsemanship by All American Cowgirls from Weatherford, Texas. In addition, hundreds of local farmers and ranchers riding a unique mix of horses and mules join the night contestants in the Grand Entry parade, one of the largest of the rodeo circuit. For more information call:

The 20th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham
The first school in Bonham for negro students was called the Bonham Colored School and is believed to have been built in the late 1800s. Official notice of the colored school is in the Bonham News, August 27, 1897. It was located on North Franklin Street. After that building burned, a new three room school was built on East 7th and Katy Blvd. The school went to the 9th grade. By 1920 the school offered 11 grades and expanded to 12 grades in 1940.
In 1928 a new brick building, funded in part by the Rosenwald Foundation, was built on Katy Blvd., which was called Washington Elementary School and High School. It had seven classrooms, two of which could be converted into an auditorium.
In the mid-1940s two frame portable buildings were added. In 1946 an airplane hangar was moved to the campus from Jones Field for a gym-
nasium, and in 1947 another frame building was added. Only two school annuals have been found, although the Museum has a number of graduation announcements. The earliest school annual was in 1948 and the second was in 1963.
The last graduating class was in 1966. A Texas Historical Marker is at the former site of the school.
The school was the focal point for the black community. An annual picnic was held for many years on the grounds. Students were encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports.
Administrators and teachers were respected members of the black community.
Over the years a number of school reunions have been held. On July 7 & 8 of this year a reunion was held in Bonham. There was a great turnout. The earliest class represented was that of 1949, represented by Vera Ross. Many other classes were represented, and children and grandchildren of graduates also attended. This photo shows the graduates attending.

Quick and easy, creamy lemon chicken piccata is a simple and delicious 30 minute meal made with tender chicken breasts in a light lemon sauce with capers.
CREAMY
2 chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. Italian seasoning
¼ c. all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
For the sauce:
2 Tbsp. butter
2 tsp. garlic, minced
1 c. chicken broth
½ Tbsp. all-purpose flour
⅓ c. heavy cream
2 Tbsp. capers
1 Tbsp. fresh parsley, finely chopped (for garnish)
1 Tbsp. lemon wedges, thinly sliced (for garnish)
6 to 8 oz. of dry pasta
Slice each chicken breast carefully in half lengthwise (horizontally) and place one at a time, between 2 sheets of plastic cling wrap or in a ziploc freezer bag. Carefully flatten the chicken breasts with a rolling pin until they are approximately 1/4" thick. Don't pound
the breasts too hard, as it could tear them apart. Ideally, you want flattened chicken breasts with uniform thickness. Season both sides of each chicken breast with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning. Then, dip the chicken in a shallow bowl of flour and evenly coat both sides. Set aside on a plate. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high for 2 minutes until the oil is sizzling and shimmering. Sear the chicken for about 5 minutes per side until golden brown and fully cooked through. The internal temperature for the chicken should reach 165 degrees. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may have to do this in two batches. Rest the chicken on a plate. In the same skillet, melt butter and saute the garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in chicken broth and flour, mix well until the sauce is smooth and uniform. Add in heavy cream, capers, and lemon juice. Turn the heat down to medium low and bring the sauce to a simmer until thickened to a desired consistency, about 2-3 minutes. Stir continuously if the cream curdles because of lemon juice, until smooth. Return the chicken to pan and toss well to coat. Let the chicken cook with the sauce for another minute and garnish with lemon wedges and parsley. Serve immediately with a side of pasta. I hope you will try this one :)
ENJOY!!

She made 605 kills and 407 digs during her senior season -- part of 1,939 kills and 1,375 digs during her
four years at Bonham.
Kirkpatrick's statewide accolades for her high school success included all-state selections by the Texas Girls Coaches Association following her junior and senior seasons and a spot on the Texas High School Coaches Association' first Class 3A Super Elite team following the latter.
She also earned the all-district hitter award outright as a junior and senior, after sharing said superlative as a sophomore. The Newcomer of Year all-district award completed her freshman season.

Bonham-ex Jones returns, joins athletics staff for upcoming year
By Rich Hilliard
Bonham alumna and softball standout Shelby Jones will return during the upcoming athletic year as a coach.
Jones, a 2019 graduate, will assist with volleyball, basketball, and track and field.
During the last three softball seasons, she extended her playing career at Williams Baptist University (Ark.).
Jones, an outfielder for WBU, concluded her collegiate career with a .356 on-base percentage, .351 slugging percentage and .292 batting average. She totaled, in 100 games, 85 hits, 69 runs, 27 walks and 20 RBI. Jones also

swiped 30 bases in 32 attempts.
In 2021, she earned a second-team selection in the American Midwest Conference, after posting a .400 batting average, 48 hits and 12 RBI.
She ended her four-year Bonham career (2016-19) as the school single-season record holder in the sport in runs scored (178), walks (64) and stolen bases (101), hitting leadoff each season on varsity. Jones hit a career-best .500 at Bonham as a senior -- when she earned the all-district offensive superlative and a Class 3A all-state honorable mention from the Texas Sports Writers Association.
Few newcomers amongst head coaches for Fannin volleyball programs for 2023
By Rich Hilliard
Volleyball season will commence on Monday, July 31, with newcomers at the helms of three Fannin County high schools -- eight of nine of which now play the sport.
Ector (Dene' Adams), Sam Rayburn (Amanda Moore) and Leonard (Brent Achorn) will have new head coaches. Adams and Achorn will bring a couple of decades and near quarter century, respectively, of coaching experience.
Conversely, Moore will be starting her first year of coaching at the high-school level.
Elsewhere, familiarity will reign at the other five.
Alumna Lindsay Carter Giles will return for her third season as head volleyball coach at Dodd City.
Second seasons at county schools will be on tap for Russell Clapp at Savoy, Lisa Davis at Trenton, Emily Vanderburg at Bonham and alumna Charletha Wilburn at
Fannindel.
With 2A and 1A teams grouped into separate classification districts this alignment -- unlike their mixing, from 2014-21, until the playoffs -- Dodd City, Savoy and Ector in 19-1A and Sam Rayburn and Trenton in 11-2A will start the season assured of reaching its respective postseasons. Each district overall includes as many squads as available playoffs berths.
The Lady Hornets' regional quarterfinal advance last fall under Giles equated Dodd City's second at least that far in the last three seasons -- and 28th trip to the playoffs in the sport in the last 33 years. It took eventual Region III-1A finalist Saint Jo in 2022 to halt the Lady Hornets' run.
In 2022, Savoy made its eighth-consecutive postseason appearance under Clapp, extending Gilmer Union Hill to four games in the bi-district round. Trenton last fall reached its seventh postseason in the last eight years with a bi-district appearance under Davis, who
arrived there after a successful stint at Leonard during the last half of the previous decade.
Sam Rayburn in 2022 made its first postseason appearance in the sport with a bi-district advance, losing to eventual regional quarterfinalist
Cumby.
Ector ended its first season of varsity volleyball last fall with a bi-district advance.
No such postseason assurances await the Fannin
County coaches whose teams compete in 11-3A -- where seven teams will again vie for four playoffs berths, including 2022 first-time State champion Gunter. Achorn, who will also be Leonard's head softball coach, will join Vanderburg in vying to get Leonard and Bonham back into the volleyball postseason -- both for the first time since 2019.
Meanwhile, Fannindel on Aug. 1 will continue its volleyball restart with a second-straight non-district August-September slate for its junior high team and varsity. Last year, Wilburn oversaw the return of the sport at the Ladonia school for the first time since, possibly, 1977.

Bedco Board Meeting –The Necessity of Readjustments
By Rose Schwartz
Monday, July 17, 2023, Bedco’s President Alan McDonald called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. after leading an Invocation and noted that Quorum was established with all board members present.
2. Consideration and possible action to approve the Minutes of the Regular Meeting held on June 19, 2023: After a review of the minutes, a motion was made by Councilman Wayne Moore to approve the minutes with Bedco’s Vice President Kelly Royse seconding the motion which passed.
3. Consideration & possible action acknowledging the monthly financial reports for June 2023: Bonham’s Director of Administrative Services Sarah Osburn asked the Board if there were any questions regarding the report, she had given them. After a brief discussion regarding checks written in June, a motion was made by Councilman Allen Sanderson to approve the report with Councilman Glenn Taylor seconding the motion which passed.
4. Citizens Opportunity to Speak: [The Board of Directors of the Bonham Economic Development Corporation invites persons with comments or observations to briefly address the Board for the limited purpose of determining whether the matter should be referred to staff for study and response and/ or be placed on a future meeting agenda. Local practice limits comments to three (3) minutes or less. State law prohibits the Board of Directors from considering deliberations on any item not listed on the posted Board of Directors Agenda.] There were no speakers.
5. Notification concerning Board of Directors positions for the coming year: Bedco’s Executive Director Gayle Cooper noted four of the Board’s members have expiring terms and those members are Glenn Taylor, Alan McDonald, Lee Ellis and Kelly Royse. She noted they will have to fill out and submit their applications. Mr. McDonald then confirmed with City Secretary Heather Stockton that the notice of the expiring terms had been submitted to the paper.
6. Executive Director’s Report: Ms. Cooper noted that the Downtown Plan had recently experienced a reset due to the departure of Consultant Rick Chaffin. She also noted that $100,000 had been paid to date with the downtown grant incentive program. She explained the reason for a $16,000 cost increase with the downtown parking lot construction and noted that the Hwy 121 project is still well below budget even with a slight cost increase due to some unforeseen issues.
7. Consideration and pos
sible action to approve the 2023-24 Budget. (Attached): Gayle Cooper explained that because of the nature of their work, expenditures will usually go up as is the case with a recent incentive decision that was not figured into the budget due to the budget being written before that decision was made. She also commented on the cost of infrastructure. She noted the Board is watching their bottom line to assure there are no problems with overextension and commented on the possible listing of the property on 121 as a precaution against there being an issue with the current lessee prospects. After a brief discussion, a motion was made by Allen Sanderson to approve the budget with Councilman Ernie Quintana seconding the motion which passed.
8. Consideration and possible action to adopt a Resolution authorizing signatories for the TexPool account, Resolution attached: Mr. McDonald noted the authorizing signatories would be those of Alan McDonald, Bonham City Manager Sean Pate, Sarah Osburn and Bonham’s Finance Supervisor Michelle Burnett. A motion was made by Wayne Moore to approve the Resolution with Ernie Quintana seconding the motion which passed.
9. Consideration and possible action to alter the parameters of the Downtown Renovation Grant. No budget impact: Ms. Cooper explained how in the beginning there was only a small grant and a large grant with nothing in between the two. She explained some projects have amounts that do not fit into the original grant amounts which has compelled her to rewrite the grant application, with the permission of the board; to a straight $6,000 investment to a $50,000 and over investment. A motion was made by Kelly Royse to approve the adjustment with Ernie Quintana seconding the motion which passed.
10. Adjourn: The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m.

A Defining Moment In World History Which Has Never Been Discussed Before
December 1969. Tom played a crucial part during his time in Vietnam but never really took any credit for these incidents. He has now been able to open up about the events that went down in Vietnam in 1969. It states and honors the soldiers who made an impact on the world during this time. Their contributions have been able to redirect history and continue to do so as time progresses.
and how everything was handled smoothly while Tom was able to maintain his secrecy. This incident has been kept silent till now, and you can now be a part of it. Get your copies from Amazon and get to know information which has not yet been publicized.
About the Author
For Immediate Release - A week can change a person's life. In this very instance, a week in Vietnam changed world history. Tom Gillespie has come out with his latest release, Vietnam - One Week in
Tom was a leader in a critical mission and only had the casualty of losing one man. This in itself is very interesting, but the information that follows the entirety of this situation is much more grappling and should be given essential highlights. Tom is not a person to brag about himself, and this book follows suit. It states the interesting events that went on during this time
Tom Gillespie is not a famous being but certainly should be. He served in the Vietnam War and has never opened up about the events that followed due to his apparent swear to secrecy. Vietnam - One Week in December 1969 is not his first book either. His Previous release, "Silent Tears," is his story about his childhood which is equally impressionable. He is a simple man who has stuck by his vows and lived a dangerously secret life.

Sam Rayburn FFA Cultivates Success at 95th Texas FFA Convention
By: Kasey Naylor
The 95th Annual Texas FFA Convention took place July 11-14th in Dallas. While most schools from Fannin County were in attendance, for one local chapter, barriers were being broken and history was made. Sam Rayburn FFA has been “cultivating” success throughout their chapter for a long time, but this week, success was seen from a different angle.
Their week began July 11th with Noah Hernandez beginning his week of service as a Texas FFA Foundation Ambassador and the Texas FFA Extemporaneous Speaking Contest where Weston Parr competed. To qualify for the state extemporaneous competition, Parr advanced through one of 57 district competitions in the state and finished as an area winner. During Extemporaneous Speaking participants select from one of the three topics drawn randomly and have 30 minutes to research the agricultural topic and prepare a four-to-six minute speech. Their speech is presented before a panel of judges and followed by a fiveminute question-answer series designed to test the student’s knowledge of the subject matter. Later that evening, Parr found out that he was in the top 10 of this contest! Tuesday, Parr competed in this contest again, and ultimately Thursday was named 6th in the state of Texas.
During the first general session on Tuesday afternoon, the Sam Rayburn FFA was named a 3-Star National FFA Chapter for Texas FFA. The 3 star rating is only bestowed upon the top 10 percent of FFA chapters in Texas. 3 star chapters advance to the national level to be judged for
the National FFA Chapter Contest. Chapters that received this rating actively implemented the FFA mission and strategies. These chapters improve their operations by using a Program of Activities, which emphasizes student, chapter, and community development.
Wednesday, Weston Parr interviewed for the Outstanding Chapter Service Learning Award, of which the Sam Rayburn FFA was a finalist in this award category. Moreover, Carson McMurtry, Eli Mosley, Jonathan Hernandez and Weston Parr received their Lone Star FFA Degrees and Jennifer Heath was named an Honorary Lone Star recipient.
Thursday, July 13th, Weston Parr gave his State Officer Candidate Speech. Later that day, Parr received a $20,000 scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Parr was also named the champion of the Service Learning Proficiency area.
The Proficiency Awards program encourages members to set personal goals and learn practical skills. The program provides recognition to FFA members for exceptional accomplishments and excellence in their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) programs. The Supervised Agricultural Experience program is an individualized application of classroom learning beyond scheduled class time and has been a standard part of agricultural education since 1917. Students’ SAEs may be entrepreneurial enterprises, employment experiences or research projects. Parr’s application won both district and area competitions before being considered by the state-selected committee in early June.
Weston Whiteside was named the Star American in Agribusiness during the 4th General Session. Whiteside’s application is currently under review by National FFA and in August notifications will be sent out about who the nation’s finalists are. In 2021, Whiteside was named the State Star Lone Star in Agribusiness.
Friday, was a culmination of
Sam Rayburn’s success as Weston Parr was named one of the Texas FFA Vice Presidents. This young man is making history for Sam Rayburn FFA as their first ever State Officer, and the first State Officer from Fannin County in more than 40 years! Parr will serve the nation’s largest state FFA association with a membership of more than 169,000. Weston and his officer team will work in partnership with the board of directors to develop policy for the Texas FFA Association and provide student leadership to Texas FFA members. Texas FFA State Officers have responsibilities to the state association and leadership duties in their areas. State officers serve a one-year term. Congratulations to the Sam Rayburn FFA on all of their accomplishments at the 95th Annual Texas FFA Convention!

Prayer for Fannin County
By Mike Dickison
Satan lost when Jesus died on the Cross for you and me.
From the first book of the Bible, we learn of the prophecy of the devil’s downfall. God said to Satan, “I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15). Satan
bruised Christ’s heel in the effort to destroy Him on the Roman cross. The good news for the world is that Christ bruised Satan’s head.
John helps us to understand that the “purpose the Son of
Satan Lost
God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil” (1 John 3:8). We also see that the Savior was willing to partake of flesh and blood “that through death he might bring to nought him that had the power of death, that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14).
The very reason that Christ died was to defeat Satan. Sin separates man from God (Isaiah 59:2). Christ was willing, however, to empty Himself of some of the glory that was His (Phil. 2:6-7) and become flesh and dwell among us (John 1:14) to defeat Satan and the stranglehold of sin.
John recorded these words
concerning Jesus, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). How does Jesus take sin away? Peter said that we are to “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). Ananias told Saul to “arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16). Jesus is the answer to overcome Satan. Satan lost when Jesus died, was buried, and arose again. “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
Sunday Morning Re-take “God Delivers Again”
Hello everyone!
As I’ve said before, one of my favorite verses to turn to for encouragement is John 16:33. Here, Jesus said to His disciples, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” We face many trials and challenges in our lives, but if we put our faith and trust in God, He is able to deliver us from whatever we face. Some examples of God’s deliverance include how Daniel was saved from the lion’s den, how Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were delivered out of the fiery furnace, and how
the children of Israel were delivered out from under the hand of Pharaoh. He can do the same for us, but only if we reach out to Him in prayer and faith.
I feel led to go in a slightly different direction this week. Several gospel groups including the Paynes, the Cathedrals, and Signature Sound, have recorded this song.
“Standing there at the red sea, God’s people begin to complain.
Soon Pharaoh and his mighty army will take us to bondage again. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord ole’ Moses cried.
Then God parted the waters and they crossed to the other side.
God delivers again; My God delivers again When it seems that all is lost he reaches down his hand.
Then all the forces of evil have to flee at his command Just when things looked hopeless my God delivers again.”
If you’re in search of a good church home, we invite you to visit and be a part of our worship here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Fannin County Commissioners Court –Balancing the Needs of the County
By Rose Schwartz
Tuesday, July 18, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:00 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. Quorum was established with two County Commissioners and County Judge present. Commissioners Self and Kopf were away at a training conference. The Invocation and Pledges were led by Commander David Johnson of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter #612. There were no Introductions and no speakers during Public Forum.
6. Discussion regarding EMS reports for May 2023 and June 2023 – County Judge for Scott Ridling, Fire Chief: Bonham’s Fire Chief Scott Ridling reported the past months have been busy with all the department’s equipment up and running. He noted they are still awaiting the delivery of a new ambulance and advised there had been a gas line breakage on Hwy 121 near Wal-mart that was currently being addressed, recommending all to avoid that area for the morning.
7. Discussion, consideration and action to move the Purple Heart Memorial to the south side of the Fannin County Courthouse – County Judge for David Johnson, Commander Chapter #612: Commander Johnson was on hand for any questions regarding the request for having the memorial bench moved to the south side of the courthouse nearest the flag poles. After a brief discussion where it was determined the move would be of no cost to the county, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve the move with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed.
8. Discussion regarding salaries of Fannin County deputies and dispatchers –County Judge for Sheriff Johnson: Sheriff Johnson gave an impassioned plea for the court to consider a better pay rate for the department’s deputies and dispatchers. An in-depth discussion ensued with the Commissioners agreeing with the importance of providing adequate pay incentives to attract and retain the best people for the job while calling attention to the needs existing in the other departments and the fact that the county must work with the finances they have. Judge Cunningham used the metaphor for comparing the county’s job of providing adequate pay for all its departments as, “a mama bird fly-
ing to the bird’s nest where a bunch of baby birds have their mouths open and there is only one worm.” He expounded on the balancing act the Commissioners Court performs daily with the hard decisions they are responsible for but noted that the court would take another look at the budget in regard to the salaries.
9. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge for County Auditor: After Fannin County Auditor Alicia Whipple noted the amount needing to be paid was $520,977.70, the motion was made, seconded and passed to approve payment.
10. Discussion, consideration and action to approve final plat for Fannin Ranch; 73 lots on CR 4910 in Leonard – County Judge (for Commissioners Precinct 2) for Development Services Director: This item was tabled for another week.
11. Discussion, consideration and action to approve preliminary Plat for Bell Vie on FM 1396 in Honey Grove – Commissioner Precinct 3 for Development Services Director: Fannin County Development Services Director Di Hopkins noted all requirements for this to be approved had been met and noted the developers are providing their own sewage treatment plant for the subdivision. A motion was made to approve by Commissioner Magness, seconded by Commissioner Lane and passed.
12. Discussion, consideration and action to allow Precinct 4 to level the ground behind the Fannin County
AgriLife Extension office on North Center Street in order for Bois d’Arc Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalist to plant flowers – County Judge for Commissioner Precinct 4: This was passed on.
13. Discussion, consideration and action to submit the County Request for Capital Credits form to the Texas Comptroller and authorize County Judge to sign on behalf of the County – County Judge: After Judge Cunningham confirmed with Ms. Whipple that this was a routine process, a motion was made by Commissioner Magness to approve with Commissioner Lane seconding the motion which passed.
14. Discussion, consideration and action to replace Commissioner Edwina Lane on the Fannin Subdivision Committee with County Judge Newt Cunningham –County Judge: Judge Cunningham explained the practicality of his filling this position and after Commissioner Lane made the motion to approve the action, Bonham resident Rusty Deets questioned the legality of the Judge being able to vote on the motion as he is directly involved in the decision. A discussion ensued which removed the question of impropriety, and the vote was taken with the motion being passed. After the vote, Judge Cunningham expressed his appreciation for Mr. Deets’ participation.

Brush piles seem to be producing more keepers, and bigger fish seem to be on timber. Bass are good on boat ramps, rip rap, and brush piles out to 20 feet or less using Texas rigged zoom motor oil worm. On flats 6 feet or less use watermelon red flukes, Carolina rigs, spinnerbaits. Swim jigs in black and blue and red, to work the brush piles. White bass are great on main lake points in 10-20 feet with white or chartreuse 1 ounce slabs.
Ray Roberts GOOD. Water is clear; 87 degrees; 0.27 feet below pool. Typical fishing patterns for the dog days of summer. White bass are good with more keeper sized fish in the schools. Crappie are fair on brush piles and trees in 20-25 feet of water using minnows, with many undersized catches. Bass are good with a sporadic topwater, but most catches on dropshots in 15-20 feet of water over main lake structures. Catfish are fair.
Tawakoni GREAT. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.19 feet below pool. Fishing is in a solid summer pattern that should not change anytime soon. The striper and white bass bite is good. Fish have been schooling early in the morning and late in the evenings. The midday bite has been good on live bait on structures in 18-25 feet. Eater size catfish bite is about as good as it gets. Fishing is solid using prepared bait such as punch be in 25-35 feet.
Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 85 degrees; 1.08 feet above pool. Striped bass are good with limits possible in the morning. Fish are in deeper water in the early morning biting on topwaters, then as the fish move to 40 feet or less switch to slabs. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Crappie are slow on jigs over brush piles in 18-20 feet of water. Bass are slow on live bait and swimbaits along the south end bluffs on the banks in 2-5 feet of water early. Eatersized catfish are good on cut shad and prepared baits in 30-40 feet of water.

no fishing license citations to a group of fishermen on Lake Waco when he heard multiple gunshots coming from the Corps of Engineers property nearby. Upon investigation, the warden found three people in the woods shooting without a permit for the property. During a safety check for more weapons and ammo, marijuana was found on one of the subjects. All three subjects received citations from the Corps of Engineers, and one subject was transported to jail for marijuana possession. The subjects stated that they had just gotten new guns and couldn’t wait to shoot them. Cases pending.
Got What They Deserved:
A Calhoun County Game warden received a call that some young men were shooting alligators from a boat in a city park. The warden got a boat and vehicle description and headed that way. By the time the warden caught up with the group, the flat bottom boat had flown out the back of the pickup truck hauling it away. The warden, with the help of a Calhoun County Game Warden, seized the boat, which had no VIN plate on its transom. Soon the group showed up to claim their boat, but in fact it had been reported stolen the day prior. Charges filed for failure to secure load; more charges pending.

Texas has largest Veteran population in U.S., leads nation in PACT Act disability claims assistance
AUSTIN, TX – Texas has the largest veteran population of any state, at over 1,543,160. Additionally, Texas leads the nation in veterans filing disability claims associated with the PACT Act, at over 73,490, since it was enacted in August 2022. In that time, the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) has experienced a 25% increase in VA disability Claims assistance. The PACT Act greatly expanded Claims eligibility for toxic exposure, burn pits and more.
“More veterans choose to live in Texas; and in Texas, we take care of our veterans. The Texas Veterans Commission works every day to improve the lives of our Texas veterans, their families, and survivors,” said TVC Chairwoman and U.S. Navy veteran Laura Koerner.
“Texans are forever indebted to our veterans and their families for the bravery and sacrifice they have given to protect our nation and the freedoms we cherish,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “Thanks to the Texas Veterans Commission, we continue to work to ensure the tens of thousands of Texas veterans who fought so
bravely to protect their fellow Americans have access to the support they need to thrive. Texas will always honor the service and sacrifice of these courageous heroes and their families.”
Veterans can get assistance filing their disability compensation Claims at no cost from the Texas Veterans Commission at https://www.tvc.texas. gov/claims/appointments/ . Veteran populations and Claims filing numbers may be found by state with the VA Pact Act Performance Dashboard at https://www. accesstocare.va.gov/pdf/ VA_PACTActDashboard_Issue9_062323_508.pdf
Helping veterans starts here. The Texas Veterans Commission advocates for and provides superior service to veterans that will significantly improve the quality of life for all Texas veterans, their families, and survivors. The TVC assists veterans with receiving their benefits, provides funding to agencies which provide direct services to veterans and administers the Hazlewood Act education benefits.
