is finding it increasingly difficult to find – and keep – volunteers. And the current economy is one
factor making this even more challenging. Impact of Rising Fuel Costs and Inflation The simple truth is that the cost of living is going up, “fueled” (pun intended) by nearly doubledigit inflation and rising fuel costs. Last week, the average cost

INSURANCE CLAIMS SPECIALIST for a gallon of gas in the Texoma region was $4.11, about 45% more than it cost around the same time last year. These skyrocketing prices make it increasingly difficult for volunteers who often use their own vehicles and pay for their own fuel. Some are having to cut back to make ends meet and nonprofits like Meals on Wheels Texoma find it harder and harder to fill their routes. On days when there aren’t enough folks to cover all the routes, some volunteers are doing double duty. Allen Haun is one such volunteer who has been delivering meals every day of the week, sometimes delivering two or three routes. He says “I don’t mind doing the extra routes, but there is a limit to what I can afford to do, because I live on a fixed income. It is the cost of gas that is the real problem for me.” Meals on Wheels depends heavily on unpaid volunteers who deliver the more than 1,200 meals every day to vulnerable senior citizens and disabled persons living throughout Cooke, Fannin and Grayson Counties. Greg Pittman, CEO of Meals on Wheels Texoma says that volunteers are critical to the organization’s work. “In spite of having more than 600 volunteers who selflessly donate their time we still have multiple routes to fill every day,” Pittman said. “These volunteer shortages are taking a real toll on our resources. We are actively seeking anyone who can donate a little time to help others. Someone who can give us an hour, once a week – is ideal. My goal is to recruit 100 volunteers in the next 30 days. When we have to pay staff to deliver meals, it negatively impacts the number of folks we can help. These are the things that keep me up at night.” Pittman said that volunteers are at the core of everything they do, contributing over 29,400 hours of their time to deliver 327,000 meals last year. 2,300 unduplicated individuals received help from the organization with the goal of helping seniors remain independent, living in their own homes. Hello everyone! What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday morning! This week I am reminded of what the Bible tells us in Psalm 80:17-19. “Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou madest strong for thyself. So will not we go back from thee: quicken us, and we will call upon thy name. Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” The only way for our nation to experience true revival, is to return to the Godly foundation that our country was built upon. Again I am reminded of the recitation that Jeff Steele included when he wrote “We Want America Back” in 1988. In this message, he speaks of some of the ways that we have turned away from God, and the things he mentions are just as prevalent today as they were when this song was written and recorded. If you have never heard this song before, it is well worth listening to. I have another revival hymn to share with you this week. I had never heard this one before, or heard of it, but that’s what I love about doing my research for this. I’ve discovered many wonderful hymns that I have either never heard before, or heard of. This one was written by Albert Midlane in 1858. “Revive thy work, O Lord, thy mighty arm make bare; speak with the voice that wakes the dead, and make thy people hear. Revive thy work, O Lord, disturb this sleep of death; quicken the smould’ring embers now by thine almighty breath. Revive thy work, O Lord, create soulthirst for thee; and hung’ring for the Bread of Life O may our spirits be.” If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Like we always say, visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day! Bro. Josh Stevenson Central Baptist Church Bonham, TX https://www.facebook.com/ cbcfannin

From My Life to Yours: Is There Any Hope?
By Bro. Bill Beasley
In Memorium Original Publish Date: July 29, 2014
Psalms 46:1 “God our refuge and strength. A very present help in time of trouble.” At the end of last week’s column I mentioned that my columns to follow would verify God’s wonderful truth of guiding us and blessing us as He walks with us each step of the way. However, in light of the most recent events occurring in our world this past week, I felt the need to deviate a bit and speak of what
I think the world needs to hear now more than anything else…the message and the reminder of the HOPE we find in HIM in the midst of troubling times. Our world is experiencing some very turbulent times. Daily media reports point out unrest, conflict, mounting wartime deaths, domestic violence and tragic losses of life. So shaken are the hearts of many people that the question they are asking is “Is there any hope?” Even among the most faithful there is a feeling of fear. A primary need of today is to have a revival of hope. Is there an encouraging word? If so, where do we find it? Yes, we do have hope. There are many references to the believer’s hope in the Bible, God’s Word. I want to use the column this week to list some of them. In the Book of Psalms there are several: Psalms 23:1 The Lord
Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Homes 903-583-5555 Bonham
is my shepherd I shall not want. Psalms 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear. The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Psalms 46:1 (mentioned above) A few others are: Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden. And I will give you rest.” John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled” . John 14:27 “My peace I give you.” Psalms 56:3 “What time I am afraid, I will trust in Him.” The Hope and courage that we need for these times are supplied by our all-present, all-wise, and all-powerful God. We must reach up in prayer, reach out in faith, and take hold of the hand and the heart of God to lead us in these troubled hours. May God Bless America.

In Preservation of a Memory and a Shared Faith By Rose Schwartz
6/14/22
In March of 1980, in San Antonio, Texas, the Texas Jewish Historical Society came into existence led by Rabbi Jimmy Kessler of Galveston. With its main goal of preserving the history of the Texas Jewish experience, the Society may have started out small, but today is comprised of 550 members and has quarterly meetings in cities across Texas to study the Jewish history of that area as well as conduct its business. The weekend of July 15-17, Bonham was fortunate to be the site of their most
recent meeting. On Sunday, July 17, 2022, members of the TJH Society braved the relentless summer heat to gather at the Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham in order to honor the memory of those departed Jewish Texans whose graves are located in a small Jewish cemetery once known as the Rosenbaum cemetery (it was deeded many years ago to the Willow Wild Cemetery Board by the only surviving child of its founder.) Seeking refuge from the blaring sun beneath the shade of a massive Elm tree, approximately two dozen men and women hailing
from as far away as Austin to as near as Sherman, met for the purpose of taking part in the consecration service of a small parcel of land (approximately 3 acres) wherein lies ten graves that give testament to the Jewish settlers of this part of Texas. The service led by Avi Mitzner, Ritual and Cemetery Director for Congregation Shearith Israel in Dallas, began with an explanation of the Jewish custom of visiting the graves of ancestors around the start of the Jewish High Holidays (Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) to pray to God, be reminded of the values held dear from one generation to the next and how in the Jewish faith, burial sites are considered sacred places. After praying in Hebrew (which included scripture Psalms 16), Mr. Mitzner invited everyone who was up to the task, to follow the procession he would lead, of circling the cemetery seven times while he recited prayers mainly from Psalms. After the circling of the cemetery, the service continued with an explanation of the significance of the number seven, three and other numbers in Judaism rituals. A recitation of El Malei Rachamim (memorial prayer for the departed) began, during which a list of the names of the departed resting in the
burial site was read with the remaining prayer recited and the attendees responding with a solemn Amen. The actual service then concluded with a recital of The Mourners Kaddish with each member speaking the Hebrew prayer in unison (a prayer that is only said in the company of ten people to assure the mourner is secure in the comfort of supporters.) And though the service was technically concluded, rocks were given to place on the graves by those wishing to do so as a permanent sign of their visit. Avi Mitzner further explained that by visiting this Jewish burial site today and leaving a permanent reminder of a rock on the gravestones, it was their way of saying to the departed “you may have been forgotten by your Jewish community but now you are remembered by us for eternity.” He added as opposed to leaving flowers at a grave, the rock is a symbol of the permanence that never changes, a representation of the ETERNAL. Those buried in the Jewish section of the Willow Wild cemetery includes a member(s) of the Brown family; the Feder family; the Klappholz family; the Levi family; the Levine family; the Rhine family as well as the infant son of the founder of the Rosenbaum Cemetery. May they and any others that may be buried there, ever, rest in peace.

They are on their front porch every day visiting with every recipient for a couple of minutes and ensuring that our homebound recipients are safe and sound. Our volunteers are often the first to observe changes in someone’s physical or emotional well-being, allowing us to take additional measures which may include notifying a family member or coordinating additional services as needed,” says Pittman. “In many ways, our volunteers are like family and often they form close bonds with the people they serve.” Anyone interested in volunteering with us can visit www.mowot.org/volunteer or call Cammie at (903) 7863351. Giving to others can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and can help protect your mental and physical health. Also on July 19, 2022, the 336th District Court’s orders regarding masks being necessary in court, was removed from the plan. Commissioner Lane made a motion to approve the plan with the two changes mentioned. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion and before taking a vote Judge Moore invited those citizens who signed up to speak on this item to come to the podium. A citizen of Fannin County spoke to recommend the court be aware of current deliberation in hearings ongoing in Austin over charges of gross mishandling by CDC and the FDA including effective treatments being withheld from Covid patients, that had resulted in preventable injuries and deaths. She requests the court monitor the final hearing to occur in August to know how our TX Legislature will be deciding on the matter of Texas developing its own data collection, research and quality control before promoting in any way a questionable vaccine be given to the children of Fannin County and provided a link to watch the hearings as: https://youtu.be/50v2PrQyxi0 . Before the next speaker spoke, Judge Moore stated everyone should know that we are moving away from the Covid guidelines, though he added, “I’m not say-
ing that what we did was bad, but under the light of the new Covid strains that we’re dealing with, they’re not as bad as the first ones” A citizen of Ravenna spoke to advise the public of information made available by Dr. Deborah Birx of adverse reactions to the Covid Vaccine including a study where out of 36 pregnant women who received the vaccine, 28 of them lost their babies as well as a trial of 26,000 people where 24,000 had adverse reactions with 1,200 deaths. She also offered any who have suffered adverse reactions to the vaccine to contact voiceoffannincounty@ gmail.com for help and advice. After they spoke, Judge Moore noted again that there is a different strain of Covid from what
was occurring in the beginning. He noted today’s covid is more like the flu and wanted to make it known that the court does not listen to one source, but they listen to many sources to take action and is thankful that Fannin County has come out very well. After making his comments, a vote was taken on the previous motion and the motion passed. 27. Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: Commissioner Lane first thanked all for coming especially those who held out to the end. She asked all to remind everyone about the burn ban and wished all a wonderful week. Commissioner Self thanked everyone who stuck around through the meeting and for being involved. He urged all to stay hydrated and to not
burn anything. Commissioner Magness wished all a good week. Commissioner Lackey wished all a good week, to be safe and drink plenty of fluids and stay indoors when possible. Judge Moore stated the new phone number for Fannin County’s Health and Food Inspector is 903-819-0211 and the e-mail address is healthinspector4fc@gmail.com . He noted her name is Amanda Brogdon. Judge Moore also advises caution with the heat particularly if you spray your kids with a hose outside. Let the water run a little, because when the water first comes out, you could scald somebody with it. He concluded by thanking all for coming. 28. Adjourn: A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn at 12:34 p.m.

True Riches
By Mike Dickison
Jesus said, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal” (Matthew 6:19-20). The Lord is telling us that the physical riches, such as money and property, are
not eternal nor true riches. Peter reminds us that “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-4). We find that true riches are incorruptible and do not fade away. We also find that true riches are
reserved in heaven. This is the importance of going to heaven. Christ explains that “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?” (Luke 9:2325). The entire world or planet is not worth the loss of our soul, because this world is not true riches.

Jesus died, was buried, and rose again so that we might have a place in heaven. He said that “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also” (John 14:2-3). Jesus, in completing God’s will for him, “became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9)

School Supplies Needed for Fannin County Kids
Press Release - Donations are needed for the 26th annual School Supply Drive and Fair hosted by the Fannin County Children’s Center. The Children’s Center will once again be giving away free school supplies to Fannin County students on Saturday, August 6 from 9 am to noon. This year’s event will include a Back-to-School Fair, similar to what was done in 2019. The street in front of the center will be blocked off to allow churches, non-profits, local businesses and other organizations to set up tents to give away free food, resources or information. Free haircuts will be provided. There is still more room for additional vendors and people licensed to cut hair. The vendor application can be found on the agency website or by contacting Andrea Lappin at (903) 5834339 or andrea@fanninccc.org. The center is also seeking donations to make this effort possible. “Every contribution is appreciated and needed” said Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Children’s Center. The center is now accepting paper, notebooks, pencils, folders and other school supplies.” Barber said, “Donors can also donate cash and leave the shopping to us. We will use it to buy what is most needed and we will stretch the donation farther by using our tax-exempt
status when making the purchases.” In all, the agency has given out free school supplies to more than 12,000 students in the last 25 years. Organizers expect to serve 500-700 students again this year. This effort depends on contributions from many generous individuals, churches, businesses and other local organizations. Items needed include: notebook paper, pens, pencils, three-ring notebooks, folders with and without brads, spiral notebooks, scissors, markers, crayons, red pens and pencils, highlighters, glue sticks, glue in bottles, erasers, backpacks, construction paper, manilla paper, watercolor paints, pencil boxes and pencil bags. Contributions can be delivered to the center at 112 West Fifth Street, Bonham, TX anytime they are open from Monday – Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Checks can be made out to FCCC and should include a brief notation that the gift is for school supplies. Donations can also be made on-line at www.fanninccc.org. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. Organizers request that contributions arrive by August 3 or earlier if at all possible to allow time for organization and preparations. For more information, call (903) 583-4339 or go to www.fanninccc.org.

Washington-on-the-Brazos Quilts 5/11/21at the Sam Rayburn House By Margo McCutcheon, Educator at the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site
We are excited to be one of the stops along the Bonham Quilt Hop from July 29th to July 30th of this year. For the first time at the Rayburn House, we will display five quilts from the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site collection. The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed on March 2, 1836, at Washington-on-the-Brazos. That historic site includes the Star of the Republic Museum, Independence Hall, and Barrington Plantation. Although the quilts we will display are not from the Texas Independence era, they are quilts from the Washington, Texas, area that date from the 1890s to the 1960s. These quilts will be displayed throughout the first floor of the Sam Rayburn House, and visitors can tour the quilt display areas for free during the Quilt Hop weekend. We will also have a new activity for those visiting the Rayburn House – Quiltzee! Several other places around Bonham will also have quilts on display, so this event is a great time to explore not only the house of Sam Rayburn, but also the town he called home.
7/26/22
Visitor and Staff with Quilt SRH Guest Bedroom 2021. Courtesy Photo The five quilts we will have feature a range of patterns and colors. The oldest-dated quilt shows a vibrant patchwork of right triangles creating a strange combination of a bow tie and Old Tippecanoe pattern. One of the more colorful quilts includes a sunburst or rising sun pattern with cotton batting. Pops of red brighten the Carolina Lily quilt featuring appliqué stems. The majority of the quilts utilize cotton materials, and a few were handstitched, with about eight stiches per inch of fabric. Whether you know and love the art of quilting, would like to appreciate the work of craftspeople, or want to get an idea for the world of quilting, the Bonham Quilt Hop is the place for you! The Sam Rayburn House is located at 890 W. State Hwy 56 in Bonham, Texas. During the
Quilt Hop, we will only have tours of the first-floor quilt display areas of the home, and these tours can be taken at any point from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29th and Saturday, July 30th. All visitors are welcome to stay awhile and explore our grounds including Sam Rayburn’s 1947 Cadillac Fleetwood, our vibrant garden, chickens, turkeys, and a barn full of surprises. For more information about the Sam Rayburn House, the Quilt Hop, or to reserve a tour of this historic home, please contact us at 903583-5558, visit our website at www.visitsamrayburnhouse. com, or email us at sam-rayburn-house@thc.texas.gov. Water stained; 82 degrees; 0.48 feet above. Water is starting to turnover, bringing the cooler water to the surface. Clarity is a little murkier, but limits of fish are still being had. Wheeling and Dealing on the Lake As game wardens patrolling Lake Tawakoni and conducting water safety inspections approached a boat, they observed a female onboard hide something in her swim suit top. Upon questioning, she revealed a small pipe from her swim suit. Further questioning from the wardens produced a small container that was wedged between the seat and the side of the boat. The container contained three marijuana buds. At this point, the wardens boarded the suspect boat and conducted a search. They located three bundles of cash in a compartment near the steering wheel totaling $5,453, and a soft sided cooler containing a large amount of marijuana. The owner and operator of the boat was arrested. The female passenger was issued a citation and released. Cases are pending.

Celebrate summer at the
Drought Forcing Liquidation Of Texas Cow Herd
By Carey Martin-TFB Radio Network Manager Long lines at Texas livestock auctions made national news recently, as ranchers liquidate herds due to the ongoing drought. But the cattle market has held up surprisingly well this summer despite an increased number of cattle going to market. “We have a huge amount of drought liquidation going on,” Texas A&M Livestock Marketing Specialist David Anderson said in an interview with the Texas Farm Bureau Radio Network. But not all cattle sales are related to drought. Anderson noted it’s also a reflection of the lack of profitability in the cow-calf sector. “Some of this liquidation of cows has to do with calf
prices that have not kept up with higher input costs,” he said. “But certainly, drought is a huge part of this.” The nation’s cow herd has been shrinking for the past two years, but this summer’s drought is sending much of the breeding herd to the processing plant. That will cut into calf numbers for the next two to three years. “Beef cow slaughter has been running over 80,000 head a week,” Anderson said. “We’ve had several weeks in a row over that level, and that’s the biggest cow slaughter in a decade.” That level of cow herd liquidation hasn’t been seen since the drought of 2011, and Anderson said a 4% decline in the nation’s cow herd could be expected next year.
In the northeast Texas Panhandle, ranchers are struggling with drought, but they’ve been luckier than most in the state. “We’re in an isolated area, and it’s kind of an exceptional situation,” Hemphill County Extension Agent Andy Holloway said. “We’ve had about nine inches of rain here since the end of April. It’s been sort of a garden spot here compared to the rest of the area.” Holloway said he’s hearing from ranchers across the state about the problems the drought is causing. “Most people depend on dirt tanks or ponds to water their herds,” he said. “If they run out feed, hay and water, they don’t have a choice but to either move their cows somewhere or sell them.”
Over the past two weeks, the majority of cattle sold have been mature cows going to the packer, Holloway said. While this is a sad situation for the Texas cattle sector, there could be a silver lining for those ranchers who can stay in business, Holloway noted. This is a scenario similar to the 2011 drought, where the cow herd was reduced, and cattle prices hit record highs in the years that followed. “This is a scenario that is very similar to ’11 and ’12,” Holloway said. “Remember what happened in ’13, ’14, and ’15. They were record prices. I think we’re on a parallel trend to experience that again.”

Season of Changes: New head coaches, districts characterize 2022 for Fannin County volleyball programs
Head coach Lisa Davis meets with the host Leonard Lady Tigers during a timeout on Oct. 5, 2021, during District 11-3A volleyball. Davis has moved up the road to Trenton for the 2022 season. Photo by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard Change will be the operative word as the 2022 volleyball season starts with workouts on Monday, Aug. 1, for Fannin County high school programs. Since the 2021 season concluded last November, changes have happened: at the helms of most county programs and with regard to district alignments for the next two seasons. Of the six county schools which fielded varsity volleyball teams last season -- only one has the same head coach returning. Lindsay Carter Giles at Class 1A Dodd City equates the longest serving at any of the Fannin schools, as she begins her
second season in the profession and at her alma mater. Conversely, 1A Savoy will have a new head coach, as Russell Clapp takes on the role. Both schools since 2015 have been assured of volleyball postseason trips yearly, being the only 1A teams in otherwise 2A-composed districts -where only two 1A berths were available. That changes this fall, as 2A and 1A teams will resume competing in separate districts. The University Interscholastic League biennial realignment last February grouped Dodd City, Savoy and Ector, the latter of which started a volleyball program last fall with junior high practices, into
District 19-1A of Region III-1A. Last season, the Lady Hornets claimed the No. 1 district 1A seed in 16-2A en route to an area-round advance -- their 27th trip to the playoffs in the last 32 years. With a bi-district trip, the Lady Cardinals reached their seventh-consecutive postseason, after advancing as 16-2A’s No. 2 seed to the 1A playoffs. Meanwhile, Trenton and Sam Rayburn each have a new head coach, as they move into 11-2A with Wolfe City and former-3A Whitewright. Lisa Davis, who coached 3A Leonard to five-consecutive bi-district appearances -- the school’s first postseasons in the

Gilmer Union Hill. A trip on Nov. 4 to Saint Jo will complete district play, as Savoy, which started consistently playing six-man in 2012, looks this fall to return to the postseason via one of two available berths in 10-1A-I. The Cardinals this season will be seeking their first postseason trip since 2018’s bi-district advance.
Class 1A-I Savoy will start its second decade of consistently playing six-man football with only its second head football coach while playing the sport: Jacob Guzman. Road trips -- on Aug. 26 to Sherman Texoma Christian and Sept. 2 to Melissa CHANT -- will begin the 2022 regular season for the Cardinals. A three-game homestand will ensue -- Sept. 9 vs. Irving Faustina Academy, Sept. 16 vs. Garland Christian Academy and Sept. 23 vs. Ladonia Fannindel -- before the first full month of play will conclude on Sept. 30 with a trip to Fruitvale. The next month will start with non-district play -- Oct. 7 vs. Wichita Falls Christian -- and ends with District 10-1A-I action -- Oct. 21 vs. Campbell and Oct. 28 at

sues: Oct. 21 at home vs. Apple Springs, Oct. 28 at home vs. Trinidad and Nov. 4 at Oakwood. Fannindel last fall made a bi-district appearance -- its fifth-straight postseason trip while playing six-man football -- finished as the District 10-1A-II runner-up and posted a 7-3 overall record.

From 2010-2015, Fielden guided Commerce to a 145-42 record, as its head volleyball coach. A trip in 2012 to the regional final highlighted her Commerce tenure -- it took eventual State champion Brock to stop her Lady Tigers’ advance that season. Realignment last February left 11-3A in tact, save Whitewright departing into 2A. The district otherwise includes Bells, Blue Ridge, Gunter, Howe and Pottsboro. Note: Fannindel will have volleyball as an athletics option for girls this year, having a high school and junior high team and playing an independent schedule under newlyhired head coach Charletha Wilburn.

ard each have a new head coach, but realignment minimally affected them. Emily Vanderburg takes the helm at Bonham, after coaching Prairiland to postseason trips each of her seven seasons there. A regional semifinal run in 2019 highlighted her time guiding the Lady Patriots, exiting the playoffs via eventual 3A State runner-up Van Alstyne. Simultaneously, the Lady Warriors advanced in 2019 to the same-region quarterfinals -- their last postseason trip to date. Leonard during the offseason promoted longtime assistant Sarah Fielden to head coach, as the Lady Tigers also this fall seek their first postseason since 2019.

John Walker now leads Sam Rayburn, which next month will start its fourth season of volleyball and third at the varsity level. Walker guided Hughes Springs into the playoffs during the last two of his three years there -- vying in a district last season with top-ranked and regional semifinalist White Oak. All four members will start 11-2A play on Sept. 27 assured of 2A postseason trips, with district matches determining their seeding. Each will face each other three times during 11-2A play.
