Dixon Announces His Intent To Run For Fannin County Sheriff

My name is Leigh Dixon and I would like to announce my intent to run for Fannin County Sheriff in the March 2024 Republican primary. I am a lifelong Fannin County resident with over 25 years in law enforcement. I have held various positions in those 25 years; patrol corporal, patrol sergeant, drug task force officer, instructor, and police academy instructor which I have been for over 10 years and currently with Texas A&M Regional Law Enforcement Academy. I am currently the Chief of Police in Honey Grove which I have been for the past 5 years. I believe my vast experience has provided me with the knowledge and skills to be Sheriff of Fannin County.

My goal is to lead the Fannin County Sheriff’s office into the changes that are happening to this county. With the growth that is certain to come with current real estate purchases and developments planned, the Sheriff’s department will need to be proactive and ready. I want to increase and maintain the staffing to accommodate the needs of Fannin County. I will work with every elected official, city and county leaders, schools and most importantly our great citizens to accomplish these goals. I will make positive and fiscal decisions as your Sheriff. Each and every person of the Sheriff’s department will be accountable for the success and operations assigned to them. I believe that the Sheriff’s department is a team that works together to cross goal lines, the Sheriff is the coach that assembles the best team to be successful. I will always have an open door to hear every concern there is. I will serve each and every citizen of this county with fairness, compassion and respect. I will seek common ground with everyone because I realize that every decision made will not always be the most popular but it will be the best for our county.

Again, I am asking for your support in the March 2024 primary and I look forward to being your Sheriff.

a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for 4-5 minutes until the seafood is cooked through (shrimp is pink and scallops opaque ). Drain the seafood, reserving the liquid. Set aside. To make the sauce, set a large saucepan over med-low heat and melt the remaining ¼ c. butter. Stir in the flour and mix until smooth. Gradually add in the milk and reserved liquid while continuously stirring. Sprinkle in the rest of the salt and pepper. Bring the sauce to a boil and cook for about 2 minutes until thickened, continuing to stir. Remove the sauce from heat and mix in the heavy cream and Parmesan cheese. Take about 1/3 c. of the sauce and mix it in with the seafood. Fill each of the shells with the seafood mixture. Take your serving plates and spread a generous amount of sauce over the bottom. Top with the shells and sprinkle with parsley.

This is a good one and I hope you will give this recipe a try!

The Millinery Shops of Bonham

Bonham Daily Favorite, 3-16-1915

Bonham Daily Favorite, 4-12-1923

The 17th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham Hats were an essential element of the wardrobe of wellto-do women in Bonham in the early to mid twentieth century.

There were at least 3 millinery shops in Bonham. Fash-

ions in hats changed from year to year and season to season, and every woman wanted the latest.

The most popular and longest lasting millinery store in Bonham was that of Ms. Homer Thompson. Mrs. Homer Thompson (Cornelia Thompson) bought a millinery shop on the north side of the Bonham Square in

employees

1902 and operated it for the next 53 years. Her hats were the vogue for four generations of Bonham ladies and she often made trips to St. Louis, Chicago and New York where she bought supplies and learned the latest styles.

During the busy seasons of Easter and the wedding months, she employed as many as 14 women in her shop. Many hats had plumes and were quite expensive. The Fannin County Museum of History has a wonderful collection of women's hats. Come in to see them in person.

ARRT Honors Four in I Am the Gold Standard Program

Press Release (June 21, 2023)

— The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is pleased to announce the four Registered Technologists (R.T.s) who earned honors in this year’s I Am the Gold Standard program.

They are:

• LuAnn Daniel, R.T. (R)(M)(CT)(ARRT)

• Diane Forbes, R.R.A., R.T.(R)(VI)(ARRT), RDMS

• Felix Zuniga Infante III, R.T.(R)(ARRT)

• Jennifer Thompson, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(QM)(ARRT)

About the Honorees

LuAnn Daniel is the founder and director of Women Rock, Inc., a nonprofit organization in Sherman, Texas. Women Rock provides uninsured and underinsured women with access to early detection of and treatment for breast cancer. Founded with $1,200 out of Daniel’s pocket, the organization today has a budget of more than $700,000 and serves women in 18 Texas and Oklahoma counties. Daniel’s career in diagnostic imaging spans more than three decades.

Diane Forbes is an interventional radiology clinical specialist at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2019, she traveled to Tanzania to help train the first interventional radiology technologists and physicians in the country. Since then, she’s conducted weekend training sessions via Zoom with Tanzanian technologists. Forbes serves on the Association of

Vascular and Interventional Radiographers (AVIR) Board of Directors and received an AVIR fellowship earlier this year.

Felix Zuniga Infante III is a diagnostic radiology technologist for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at the VA Wilmington Healthcare System in Wilmington, Delaware. He served for 30 years in the U.S. Army, including time with the 21st Combat Support Hospital providing radiology exams in a combat zone. He was instrumental in relocating a 28-bed hospital in a hostile environment with no loss of critical patient-care capabilities. After retiring from the Army, he took on his current role.

Jennifer Thompson is a program director and professor at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. She has supported state licensure for technologists since 2016 and began serving on the Tennessee Radiologic Imaging and Radiation Therapy Board in 2019. When Tennessee considered a bill earlier this year that would eliminate most licensure requirements, Thompson involved her students in a grass-roots campaign that involved social media, podcasts, testifying at state hearings, phone calls, and knocking on state legislators’ doors. Although Tennessee ultimately passed the bill, Thompson’s advocacy efforts were considerable.

Molding Your Dog the Right Way

Last time we talked about an older, dominant dog, who had some bad habits. These can almost always be staved off ahead of time if we have an idea how to proceed. And even if we're late to the party, say with an adoptee, behaviors can generally always be remediated.

It's important to remember our dog is 99.9% wolf, genetically. This pretty much comes down to him understanding subconsciously he'll either outrank you or vice versa. Obviously, your dog has to be at the bottom of the pack order. Otherwise you'll have chaos. But there are things we do that give our dog the message that we really 'do' outrank him. (Dogs don't have conversations about these things.) Little things like

Dog

not letting him jump on you or put his mouth on you. And the leash is the granddaddy of "messages" when it comes to conveying the leadership precept. So whether you have a puppy or you have adopted an older dog, right off the bat, you cannot let him jump on you. This is a very primary message of leadership. No higher ranking dog (which is supposed to be you), would ever let a subordinate put his paws on him. Being the 'pack leader' simply means you are the one who makes appropriate rules and boundaries. Max instinctively understands if you disallow jumping, it must mean you outrank him. With a pushier puppy, or a dog who has never been deterred from jumping, it may take a little bit for him to give up on the idea. - Next time, more about the method for enforcing appropriate rules and boundaries.

Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham called to order at 9:03 a.m., the Regular Meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court. President of Lake Fannin Volunteers Cheryl Youree spoke to request the Lake Fannin road associated with CR 2025 be kept open and maintained by the county for emergency exit purposes. Citizen Carolyn Rogers spoke to commend the swift response to a request she made to Commissioner Lane regarding a downed tree blocking a county road by her residence.

6. Discussion regarding EMS monthly report for May 2023 – County Judge for Scott Ridling, Fire Chief: This was passed on.

sioner Magness noted this was one of the best things to happen to Fannin County before making the motion to approve the Resolution. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Lane and passed.

9. Discussion, consideration and action regarding a Change in Zoning application; 6.743 acres on CR 2975 in Dodd City, Property ID# 75393; from A&R Agriculture and Ranching District to R&C, Retail and Commercial District – County Judge for Development Services Director: Three citizens residing close to the property spoke to give reasons why they believed the zoning change request should be denied. Discussion ensued which included Commis-

sioner Magness noting future development of the area was unavoidable and one of the protesting citizens stating that Commissioners were elected to represent their constituents and with 46 letters of protest against this action existing and the zoning board recommending the request be denied, he believed any yes vote by a commissioner would be a betrayal of the trust placed in Commissioners by their constituents. After the owner of the property spoke, a motion was made by Commissioner Kopf to approve the zoning commission’s recommendation to not approve the zoning change request. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Lane and passed with one nay vote.

Barber Retiring from the Children’s Center

Press Release - After more than 22 years as the Executive Director of the Fannin County Children’s Center, Sandy Barber is retiring. Including her prior experience at North Texas Youth Connection, Barber has worked in the nonprofit and child welfare field for more than 31 years. The Board of Directors and staff of the Children’s Center will be hosting a Retirement Party for Barber on Wednesday, July 5. All are welcome to join the celebration from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at the Roy Floyd

Community Center at 1100 W. 5th in Bonham.

Barber’s family moved to Arlington, Texas when she was in sixth grade and she graduated from Martin High School. Six weeks after graduating from Austin College in Sherman, Texas she married her college sweetheart, Bill Barber. Together, they have three daughters, Jessica, Katie and Cassidy.

Barber said, “There have been LOTS of changes in the 22+ years I have been here at the Children’s Center. Growth

is definitely tops on that list. When I started, we had 4 staff and an annual operating budget of about $145,000. We now have 9 staff and a budget of more than $900,000. We were located in an office space in which the rent was donated when I started. In 2003 we purchased, renovated and moved into our current facility. We currently have about 8 acres of land donated and we are working to raise the funds needed to build a new, larger facility.”

When Barber started, the

Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) was only about 18 months old in Fannin County and was considered a "developing center." Over her time at the center, mental health services were added to the CAC. Other new services added during her tenure included the Rainbow Rooms (emergency clothing & resource closet) and child abuse prevention classes. The CASA and CAC programs expanded and evolved over the years to keep up with the growing population in our community as well as the changing state and federal standards for CASA and CAC.

The annual Christmas and School Supply Drives also grew under her leadership thanks to generous donors.

“There have been many changes in technology too,” said Barber. “When I started, we had dial up internet, we did not have an agency website and social media was not even a thing. Grants were submitted by mail and monthly grant billing was submitted by fax.”

“There have been LOTS of challenges along the way too,” said Barber. “Some of those challenges have included the times we lost grants or had turnover with staff or partners. The increasing state and federal standards from both CASA and CAC have been challenging too. Juggling both CASA and CAC has also been part of the challenge at times. No matter what the challenges have been, I would say I mostly worked to meet them by collaborating with our staff, board, volunteers, partners, donors and other supporters. The nature of this work and our mission relies on a variety of folks coming together, giving and doing what they can, to make good things happen for kids from hard places.”

Barber said, “What I liked most about this job was definitely the difference we have made for hundreds of kids and families over the years. I have been blessed to be able to play a small part in getting abuse to stop, healing to begin and in some cases, justice to be granted. A close second would be the opportunity I had to help others in our community see how they too can make a difference for kids from hard places. Whether I was inviting folks to donate, recruiting volunteers or board members, hiring and training staff or teaching folks how to recognize and respond to suspected child abuse, it was energizing to me to figure out how I can connect others to be a part of our important

mission. On the other hand, the thing I liked least was firing people. No matter how deserved it was, I have never liked doing it.”

When asked what she would miss most, Barber said, “The people. I will miss seeing kids skip down the hallway to go to their counseling sessions and the parties we had when kids got to go home or get adopted. I will miss working closely with the dedicated staff, volunteers, partners, donors and board members too.”

Barber has been honored with many awards over the years.

In 2019, she won the Athena Leadership Award, which honors women in leadership and the Angels in Adoption Award, which included a trip to Washington DC. Texoma Council of Governments named her the Regional Citizen of the Year in 2015 and the Bonham Chamber named her the Citizen of the Year in 2021.

In 2011, she won the Texas CASA Go Give Award. “This was extra special to me because it recognized me for being a support and inspiration to my fellow CASA Executive Directors from across the state,” said Barber. Bonham ISD has also named her a "Friend of Education" three different times over the years, including this year. Barber served terms on the boards of Texas CASA, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas as well as many local organizations. She was recently recognized for serving twenty years on the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee at the Texoma Council of Governments.

“It has truly been my honor and blessing to do this work for more than two decades,” said Barber. “Now it is time for me to hand the baton on to the next leader. I am really excited that Kim Skidmore has come back to the center to become our next leader. I am confident the center will be in good hands with her.”

All Are Declared Under Sin

The Bible declares that “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

We cannot be righteous on our own. Paul refers to Psalms chapter 14, when he writes, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).

It is easy for us to think of ourselves as good and others as bad. We are reminded that we are not the standard; “For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves,

Hello everyone!

are not wise” (2 Corinthians 10:12). John informs that “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8).

Sin is the real source of all of man’s problems. We are told that “death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come” (Romans 5:14).

Each of us are “tempted, when we are drawn away of our own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death”

(James 1:14-15).

Isaiah records this message, “Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that

it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear” (Isaiah 59:1-2). Paul wrote that “the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe” (Galatians 3:22). Sin must be dealt with. Luke recorded that “they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls” (Acts 2:41). Why were they baptized? Peter had told them to “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38).

Sunday Morning Re-take

The Bible tells us in 1 Peter 1:3-5, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

Mercy is defined as the compassionate treatment of those in distress, especially when it is within one’s power to do them harm. We serve a great and merciful God, and His mercy should never be taken for granted. God’s mercy is not something that is owed to us, but He extends it to us even though we are undeserving of it. He extends

His mercy lovingly, and calls us to extend mercy as well.

As part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.”

This week I am once again turning to a hymn that was written by Frederick William

in 1862.

“There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, Like the wideness of the seas. There’s a kindness in God’s justice, Which is

more than liberty. There is welcome for the sinner, And more graces for the good. There is mercy with the Savior, There is healing in His blood.”

If you’re looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and

Lady Rebels’ back-to-back State RU member to make s'ball coaching debut in 2024 at DC

DODD CITY -- Cassidy Hall

Reed's softball skills helped Sam Rayburn make school history in the sport during the early 2010s.

As an upperclassman, her pitching, batting and play in the field, helped the Lady Rebels in 2012 and 2013 reach the Class 1A State championship games. Her ensuing efforts in 2014 at North Central Texas College helped the Lady Lions also make history. NCTC garnered its first two softball victories at the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament, in only the Lady Lions' second trip there -- part of a 45-win season.

Reed's second NCTC campaign in 2015 included more history -longtime manager Van Hedrick's 700th career win -- in the season

following the Lady Lions' fall 2014 bus tragedy -- which took the lives of four teammates.

Reed, who while in Arkansas has stayed involved with softball via giving pitching lessons to younger kids, will now return to Fannin County.

New head softball coach set to lead Lady Hornets in 2024

She will make her coaching debut at Dodd City, which has reached the 1A State Tournament during five of the last six complete softball seasons, in support of new head coach Emily Graves, a 2015 NCTC teammate.

"My husband and I are excited to return to Fannin County," said Reed, who will be the softball assist and teach second grade at Dodd City, on June 20.

"We are happy to be able to raise kids closer to family," she said. "I am thrilled to be able to begin a new journey in coaching the sport that I love, and hope to give back what it has given me.

"I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to seeing some familiar faces on the field."

Bonhi-ex Reaves in summer college league

Tanner Reaves, a 2021 Bonham graduate, will play for the Chatham Anglers, a member of a collegiate summer baseball wooden bat league in Massachusetts.

During 60 games this season for Blinn College, the Louisiana State University commit had a .783 slugging percentage, .498 on-base percentage and .422 batting average. His 103 hits included: 22 doubles, 20 home runs and three

triples. He totaled 86 RBI, 77 runs scored and 15 stolen bases.

Reaves also earned an NJCAA Division I Baseball AllAmerica first-team selection and World Series All-Tournament Team spot.

DODD CITY -- Emily Graves served this spring as co-head softball coach at Commerce, competing in a Class 3A district that includes Emory Rains -- a regular State tournament participant of late.

She has now been hired to lead Dodd City -- which has advanced to the 1A State event during five of the last six complete softball seasons.

"I am very excited and eager to start working with Dodd City’s outstanding athletic program," said Graves on June 19.

"The student athletes, coaches, administrators, and community have created a winning environment at Dodd City," she said, "and I am eager to be a part of it."

Graves fills the softball role at Dodd City handled the last two seasons by alum Chad Crossland -- who each year guided the Lady Hornets to the 1A State semifinals. Both times, Dodd City lost to the eventual 1A State champions -- D'Hanis in 2022 and Hermleigh in 2023. (Graves' sister-in-law, Kylee

Graves, served as the starting catcher on the 2021 and 2022 Dodd City Lady Hornets softball teams -- the former of which won the 1A State title.)

Crossland will now coach cross country, still assist with boys' basketball, and now oversee boys' track.

Graves will also at Dodd City coach powerlifting -- a sport added last school year there via two boys competitors -- and an activity with which she assisted for two years while at Commerce.

Graves also served for two years as a softball assistant at Commerce, before her promotion to the co-helm of the dia-

mond sport following the December resignation of the head coach.

While Commerce struggled this spring to a winless record in District 11-3A, Graves pitched for postseason teams during her high school and college careers.

She helped 5A Midlothian reach the playoffs during her three varsity seasons -- each time as a starting pitcher.

During Graves' first of two seasons at North Central Texas College in 2015, she posted a 7-2 record in the circle, mostly appearing as a starting pitcher. Her efforts that season equated part of a 30-win campaign that included a victory by the Lady Lions during the NJCAA Region V North Tournament.

It also equated NCTC's first spring softball season following its late September 2014 bus tragedy -- when a semi-truck crossed a median on Interstate 35 and crashed into the Lady Lions' southbound bus in Oklahoma, as NCTC returned home from a scrimmage -- which took the lives of four team members, including Dodd City alumna Katelynn Woodlee.

Readying For Return: Strong 7-on-7 spring season starts Trenton football's playoffs pursuit

last fall out of the football postseason for the first time since 2018.

The Tigers tied at 2-3 with 2A-newcomer Whitewright for District 6-2A-I's fourth and final postseason berth. It equated Trenton's secondstraight five-win season -- both tops for the school's varsity football program since its 2012 restart and 1933 overall.

A 6-1 record this spring during 7-on-7 football should give the Tigers confidence, as Trenton looks to start a new postseason

streak, later in 2023.

It will do so under Josh Shipman, who returns for his fifth season at the helm of the Tigers -- the most consecutive at the same school for any Fannin County head football coach.

Trenton will play host to former district rival Celeste on Friday, Aug. 25, to start its regular season.

ALVIN RAY DAVIS, JR.

In the early morning hours of June 22, 2023, Alvin Ray Davis, Jr. entered Heaven. Alvin was born February 6, 1975 to Alvin, Sr. and Connie Davis. He was the only boy born to the couple who previously had 3 girls, Lisa, Susan, and Kelly. Later, he gained a younger brother, Jonathan Davis.

He was loving, kind, generous, out-going, full of charm with a great sense of humor and a sharp tongue when needed. He traveled a good path even amidst life’s pitfalls to stay true to God’s word. We will always remember his smile, the slow cool drawl in his voice, the large loud belly laughs that always ended with “Awe, Man”, and his sweet patient nature.

John 3:16 : For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

2 Corinthians 4:17-18: For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Fishin’ Report

TAKE A KID FISHING

Texas Crop and Weather Report June 27, 2023

Nice fish! Theo Koulianos caught this 31.5-pound striped bass from Lady Bird Lake. Striped bass are not stocked in Lady Bird Lake. Any striped bass caught in Lady Bird Lake or Lake Austin are remnants of stripers that used to be stocked in Lake Travis and got washed downstream. Due to low abundance and limited angling pressure, stripers are no longer stocked in Lake Travis. Week of June 28, 2023

Cooper GOOD. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees. Happy Fourth of July! Catfish are good on cut shad. White bass are good. Crappie are fair with jigs and minnows. Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 90 degrees; 0.42 feet below pool. Happy Fourth of July! Bass are good early on windy points in 1-3 feet of water usinf topwaters and chatterbaits. Then offshore bite starts around 9 a.m. using Carolina rigs and Texas rigs Strike King Anaconda worm. Fish drop-offs in 15-22 feet of water, or in 25-28 feet of water. Deep crankbaits over 22-25 feet of water around creek channels are good.

Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.18 feet below pool. Happy Fourth of July! Crappie are excellent in the early mornings in 5-10 feet of water on timber in shallow brush piles. As the sun rises, fish transition midday to 12-20 feet of water. Majority of the schools will be at 12-14 feet. A lot of the monster fish are going to be sitting on the bottom and you cannot see them. You will need to take your jig and touch the bottom and lift up real slow and you will find they are hiding right on the bottom. Some days timber is better than brush. If you were to cut the lake in half, it seems that the south half of the lake is fishing best right now. For the last week, brush piles have been best bet at 15-20 feet.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water is stained; 85 degrees; 0.03 feet above pool. Happy Fourth of July! White bass are slow, but should improve soon. Bass are good on Carolina rigs and dropshots in 2-14 feet of water. Some mornings have a good topwater bite. Crappie are good with many undersized catches on brush piles in 15-25 feet of water.

Tawakoni EXCELLENT. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.32 feet below pool. Happy Fourth of July! Fish are on the move as the water temperature increases to the mid 80s. Hybrid striper, striper and white bass have been consistent on slabs, inline spinners and even live bait in 18-30 feet of water on drop offs, humps and long points. Side imaging is helping find the fish. Crappie are good in 8-16 feet on bridge columns, lay downs, and standing timber preferring minnows over jigs. Eatersize catfish are excellent with baited holes producing most of the fish right now. Prepared baits are working best in 22-35 feet of water. Largemouth bass are fair with a solid topwater bite the first 30 minutes on a white frog. Then switch over to a stick bait or shallow crankbait. Fish are holding on shady sides of shallow docks and bridges. Report by Captain Michael Littlejohn, Lake Tawakoni Guide Service.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 80 degrees; 0.22 feet below pool. Happy Fourth of July! Striped bass are in the summer pattern. Small stripers are biting swimbaits under working rafts of threadfin shad. Bigger stripers are good with topwater action, and some out in really deep water with great big schools using slabs. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Water temperatures are hot and the fish are very active in the early mornings and late evenings. Striper fishing is excellent on live bait, slabs and top waters. Look for birds hovering along flats and river channels. Drifting with the schools of fish and watch your over 20 inch fish two per person limit. Crappie are slow on the boathouses in 15-20 feet of water fishing minnows. A lot of fry and small shad in the lake so jigs have been getting a better reaction bite. Catfish are good on cut shad and prepared baits in 15-25 feet of water. Anchor up and fish right off the bottom around creeks and flats. Largemouth and smallmouth are good on live shad along the south end of the lake and along the railroad bridge rocks. Off the banks in 5-10 feet of water catch them on small swim baits and jerkbaits as well.

Texas A&M AgriLife CENTRAL Soil moisture levels were very short to adequate. Conditions were dry, with temperatures above 100 degrees. Strong winds and heavy rains did hit parts of the district. A line of storms delivered about 2 inches of rain within one hour and heavy, straight-line winds that caused extensive damage to trees and knocked out power. Winds also damaged corn fields. Spotty rainfalls were insufficient to curtail drought conditions. Corn silage operations began, while corn grain harvest was still about 45 days out. Cotton continued to set bolls, and some fields were starting to bloom. Insect activity remained high, with grasshoppers found in high numbers in all crops, while stink bugs increased in sorghum acres. Corn was rapidly drying down, mostly past the stage when precipitation could help yields. Some late-planted corn will be unable to utilize the additional nitrogen fertilizer to fill the kernels. Corn stunted by excessive rainfalls in early development did not recover. Estimates were for an average crop, possibly the 75 bushels per acre with early planted corn fields that could approach the 125 bushels per acre, but there were many other fields heavily damaged by excessive rainfalls, which may yield as low as 30-40 bushels per acre. Sorghum was starting to color. Sesame was being dry planted. The limited acreage of mid-winter plantings of carinata was harvested, and yields were in the mid20-bushel range. Expectations were for additional carinata acres to be contracted for fall plantings. Pasture conditions remained good for most producers, but the hot, dry weather pattern was taking a toll on grass growth. Producers were bailing hay with good yields reported. Rangeland and pasture conditions were very poor to excellent. Livestock remained in good condition, with producers feeding supplemental nutrients as needed.

NORTH Pastures and range-

land conditions were fair to good, while topsoil moisture ranged from short to adequate. Most counties reported rising temperatures, with heat indexes reaching over 100 degrees. Pastures and hay meadows looked great for most counties. Hay harvesting continued. Corn was in the filling stage. Wheat and oats were harvested. Soybeans looked good, with some fields blooming. Grain sorghum began heading out. Livestock conditions were good to excellent, but horn flies were bad. EAST Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate. Increasing temperatures and humidity stressed plants and animals as heat indexes reached upwards of 120 degrees. Storms caused damage and power outages around the district. Producers continued hay production in most counties. Pasture and rangeland conditions were good. Livestock were in fair to good condition. Panola County reported producers were practicing caution in working cattle due to extreme heat. Market prices were higher in all cattle classes, and feeder demand remained strong. Wild pigs continued to cause problems for most producers.

Dave Ray, our father, told us stories of Big Foot Wallace scaring Indians away by yelling at them. He was driving a Jeep one night with only blackout lights. He stopped when he saw three Germans in front of him. Being a Chaplin, he didn’t carry a gun. They were so close, he heard them take their guns off safety. He thought about surrendering, but he was afraid they’d shoot him. He yelled, “Hey There!,” and they ran away.
