By Gabrielle DeMay The Fannin County Commissioners Court convened for a special meeting Monday, June
29, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. to discuss rising detention center expenses and new ways to reduce costs. County Judge Randy Moore assembled representatives from
Tax Assessor/Collector, District Clerk, County Clerk, Justice of the Peace Precincts 1 and 2, and the Sheriff’s Office, to join in the search for a solution. County Auditor Alicia Whipple

read projected costs for the detention center for the remaining year, comparing budgeted costs with actual spending trends seen in Fannin County. The expectation of an average of 110 County inmates every month has been far exceeded by the current total count of over 160, forcing the County thousands of dollars over budget. This overcrowding

is fairly recent, and Judge Blake expected some correlation to Covid-19, which has likely led to an increase in family violence and activity from drug users or other repeat offenders who have become bored at home. Covid-19 has also affected the bottom line, as Judge Moore pointed out. In the past few months of the shutdown, the County has seen decreases in revenue from department fines and fees, including a loss of $150,000 in tax and auto, $72,000 in medical and transport, and $60,000 in other office fees. The Court discussed possible methods of reducing costs and increasing revenue to offset the balance, including options such as reducing inmates in the detention center, decreasing personnel, or increasing the tax rate. Judge Skotnik believed reducing inmates could be the most effective route, by monitoring time spent in the jail, and releasing more perpetrators of minor infractions with the restrictions of Personal Recognizance (PR) Bonds. Judge Skotnik noted there is a possibility this route could lead to increased spending on ankle monitors with GPS locators for the inmates who cannot afford the cost themselves. District Attorney Glaser suggested tightening up the intake process to ensure perpetrators are in contact with attorneys as quickly as possible. Judge Moore intends to continue this conversation in 7 to 10 days. The Meeting adjourned at 2:28 p.m.

Mike and Taryn Nejtek Endorse Edwina Lane for Fannin County Commissioner Precinct 1
Edwina has been preparing for this position for the past 18 months. She has faithfully attended Commissioners Court for the past year and a half, and she has consistently conveyed her plans for grappling with important county issues through various media outlets. Edwina has created and facilitated several programs to help needy residents impacted by COVID-19, and she faithfully serves as an officer for the Fannin County Republican Women’s organization. If elected, Edwina will dedicate the next four years exclusively to this position. Although, she and her husband own a local security consulting firm, she has plans in place to delegate all business affairs to another. This will prevent any distractions from taking her attention away from the county. Edwina has the character and skill sets needed to represent you. Political Ad Paid For By Mike and Taryn Nejtek

NNIN COUNTY COMMISSIONER PRECINCT 1
Fannin County Beyond 2020: A Shared Vision
When you think of prosperity, what thoughts come to mind? For me, I picture an image of my “Tomorrow” being better than my “Today”. With “next week” being even greater still. Imagery is a wonderful tool and it serves to drive our minds, pushing us to greater rewards. As Americans, this mindset of exceptionalism is woven into the fabric of our culture. As it should be! It was through this vision of a brighter future that ultimately led me to enter this race for County Commissioner. Like my parents before me, I wanted to ensure that this world my children and grandchildren will one day inherit, will be better than when I received it. Even during trying times such as these, history has proven that any challenge can be overcome through having Drive, Determination and a Shared Vision. These qualities led me to build my campaign around four key principals which I believe are essential to our County’s future. Separately, they comprise individual ideas and tasks, but collectively they lay the framework to building a better Fannin County.
UNITY • ECONOMIC GROWTH • FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY • PUBLIC SAFETY Unity breeds efficiency – Teamwork by its very definition delivers best when all participants have their eyes set on the same objective. County government is comprised of many different departments, each struggling for their share of a limited budget. Relationships can become strained and it is the task of the Commissioner’s Court to steady the ship. Nowhere have I seen this more evident than my 20 years working at the Lewisville Police/Fire Department. I bring a strong balance of assertive decision making ability with fairness and cooperative effort. Economic Growth – No other time of year is this more on the minds of residents than right now during tax appraisal season! I haven’t met a person yet who didn’t experience a substantial increase in their property values this year. With the expanding metroplex, buyers are willing to pay much higher prices and we’re feeling the pinch of higher taxes due. Without a growing Retail & Industrial tax base, the burden of paying for increased county services falls to the property owner. We must have a STRONG presence on the Court of task-oriented Commissioners capable of seizing every opportunity to bring business development to Fannin. Fiscal Responsibility – The quickest way to have an extra dollar is to not frivolously spend the ones currently in your wallet! Commissioners must create an atmosphere of being good stewards of the County’s treasure and remain mindful that every penny received came from the labor of the taxpayer. I’ve never had to search far into any organization’s budget to find waste. Effective leaders possess the willingness to seek out such waste and the fortitude to stand against it. I have no qualms in addressing wasteful or inefficient expenditure of tax dollars. I reference this below in the action steps of my Response Plan. Public Safety – With my husband, Mike, still serving as a Police Captain in Lewisville, this is very near and dear to my heart. Our emergency responders voluntarily place their lives in jeopardy with no more notice than the ringing of a 911 call. A true focus on Public Safety, however, goes well beyond just Police & Fire response. Our county is currently facing a very difficult decision on how we will provide EMS services in the near future. Decisions made by Commissioners today will have a direct impact on ambulance availability and response times across our County. I bring 20 years of understanding and experience in this field of service. Earning your trust in serving as County Commissioner doesn’t end on Election Day. I must continually justify your support by the measure of this Mission Plan: 1. Bring RELIEF to Fannin County taxpayers 2. IMPROVE on Delivery of Services to them. 3. Stand ACCOUNTBLE for Successes or Failures I have developed a DETAILED set of plans on how to achieve this and made sure these can be implemented under our current strained budget. Here are just a few: • Immediately begin cutting & clearing ditches of debris – water carries away expensive gravel and must be channeled off road surfaces. – You may have seen my recent video on CR-1265 which showcases the immediate impact this will have. • Career/Skill development training for Equipment Operators – provided at low cost through Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX). • Quality Analysis and Control program – Every job will have supervisory inspection and sign-off by my Foreman or me personally. We work for YOU. • Quarterly Newsletter informing residents of: - Progress made - Challenges ahead - A schedule of Planned Operations - and Opportunities to better serve our community • Establish Pct. 1 Website for reporting: - Maintenance needs - Complaints - Letters of appreciation. - This will also serve as another communication portal • Public Access to my direct cellphone number: (903) 287-0388 - where calls are promptly returned. Feel free to call now! • Budget transparency through publishing a simplified overview of how YOUR taxes are being spent. Throughout this campaign, I am the only candidate who has provided DETAILS on how I will improve county service delivery to you, the taxpayer. These steps are actionable today, deliver immediate results and require very little, if any, expenditure. Best of all, they serve as a measure towards ACCOUNTABILITY in holding my office to its responsibilities. I currently serve as Vice-President of the Fannin County Republican Club and you will not find anyone more committed to upholding the CONSERVATIVE values our nation was founded upon. My husband and I own Texas Firearms Training Academy which provides annual medical and armed faculty training to Fannin County area schools. We, the people of Fannin County, have a shared vision of our future. Increasingly, we demand a modernized, efficient approach to the performance of the duties of County Commissioner. This opportunity can only be seized if voters are willing to come out and make their voices heard. See you at the Armory! My name is Edwina Lane and I humbly ask for YOUR vote for Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One. Early Voting runs June 29th - July 2nd and July 6th – July 10th (8am-5pm). Election Day is July 14th (7am-7pm). Political Ad Paid for by Teri Sheddy.

From My Life to Yours: 5/2/17
Let Freedom Ring
By Bro. Bill Beasley
Proverbs 14:34 I’m Proud to be an American where at least I know I am free, Do we know what that means? Do we know the sacrifices that have been made to claim that freedom? “My crew had no thought of ever coming home until things were won. And that was it; do your job and do it well and get back home,” W.C. Beasley. We just celebrated 4th
of July. Take a moment to remember that many paid the ultimate price so you could have the opportunity to celebrate this day. More importantly, later this year we will have the privilege as a nation to elect a new president. What a privilege, a responsibility and such a historical time for our beloved country for the American people to have the opportunity to exercise their freedom and vote for a new leader. God give us clarity I pray. Now is the time for a strong leader. The name “Mr. Sam” speaks to us in terms of a history that is ours to claim in Fannin County. The bells of freedom are ringing all around us and we can rejoice in this gift.
While dipping in the pages of history, however, I found this prayer written by one of the greatest soldiers ever to wear the uniform of our country, General Douglas MacArthur. “It is my earnest hope – indeed the hope of all mankind – that from this solemn occasion a better world shall emerge out of the blood and carnage of the past, a world found upon faith and understanding, a world dedicated to the dignity of man and the fulfillment of his most cherished wish for freedom, tolerance and justice.” – General Douglas MacArthur He will be remembered for his leadership in World War II. He will be remem-
A Chocolate Pie to Remember
By Tamera Whitlow, LVN, USAF Veteran – Home Hospice of Cooke County
I remember days when I was sick or my grandmother wanted to show me love. She made homemade stew, and a warm chocolate pie with 6-inch meringue. That memory is part of the past that makes me feel good and reminds me of moments with her. We learn from our elders because they have wisdom of the past. I will turn 60 years of age this year. I still say yes sir and yes ma’am with respect. They became my teachers sharing their past experiences to help me see all the many sides of a story. They showed me how if I stay in the same predicament, with the same opinion, I will not grow or move forward. When your final days are
here, memories are all that matter. As a Home Hospice nurse I’ve had the honor to be with families while on the journey to death. The one thing I know for sure, when leaving this world each human goes through the process of remembering the past. Assisting the dying as they muddle through the past cleaning up regrets and ill spoken words you see them find the peace. The enlightenment learned through their end of life journey and sharing it with family and friends helps close the legacy the way the person wants to be remembered. With the past repaired family and friends will have positive memories. Today, I watched the news showing all the destruction, violence, fear and anger. The act of removing monuments will not erase history or repair it but each
one has a history lesson to teach us for the future. A memorial is a tribute to something significant in our country’s independence we cherish today. Your freedom to choose not to remember the past is yours but it will not erase history. Similar to our end of life journey, we can reconcile ourselves to the past

bered also for the poem entitled the following: “An old Soldier’s Prayer.” In other words….“Build Me A Son.” I am pleased to use part of it here: “Build me a Son, O Lord who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave enough to face himself when afraid, One who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat, and humble and gentle in victory. Build me a son whose heart will be clear, whose goal will be high, a son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men, one who will reach in to the future, yet never forget the past. Then I, his father, will dare to whisper. I have not lived in vain.” With this article I am beginning my seventh year of writing for “The Leader.” I

Let’s go back in time this week. In the late 1960s or early 1970s, these pies were really popular. Since it’s so hot in July, and you don’t have to bake these pies, you may want to try this recipe. If you don’t want to make a baked pie shell, you can use a graham cracker crust. Either way, these pies are easy, and, oh, so, good! CREAM CHEESE PIES 1 can Eagle Brand milk 8 oz. cream cheese Mix together. Add: 1 tsp. vanilla 1/3 cup lemon juice Pour into pie shell. Top with bananas and cherry or strawberry pie filling. Store in refrigerator. I’ve made these without the bananas, and with blueberry pie filling, or any kind you like. Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

and educate the community on the needs of healthy food. They also planted a seed with several people who are now serving the community during one of its most trying times. We are a group of many churches, organizations and dedicated individuals. Feeding Fannin Friday food distributions have become an important day for many residents of Fannin County. Through a lot of planning and hard work, community members created a valuable resource for locals in our high-need area who need extra support getting healthy groceries. Anyone regardless of circumstance is welcome. Everyone needs a little help sometimes. Since April 2019 in collaboration with North Texas Food Bank the mobile pantry has come to Bonham and Honey Grove. Recently due to COVID-19, the mobile pantry turned into Disaster Relief providing boxes of staples and produce. On occasion they have also brought kid’s snack boxes and fresh milk and orange juice. Our
8/2/16 next distribution will be July 17th at the Pavilion in front of the Bonham Armory. The National Guard will be back to help with the trucks. In May, we added Tuesday Super Suppers to provide a good weekly meal to families. Through help with several churches and organizations we have served from 175 – 320 dinners per week. Volunteers also take dinner to the Bonham Police Department, Bonham Fire Department, Open Arms Shelter and to homebound residents who are unable to drive. Unless we run out and that has happened a couple times: The Breakfast Stop’s pulled pork with mac and cheese dinner and Solid Rock Church’s fresh grilled burgers were huge hits! First United Methodist, First Presbyterian, Legend Bank. Kwik Chek and North Texas
Relief with Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh have also provided delicious dinners. Many families appreciate their generosity and that of local farmers and Master Gardeners including Bearden farms that have donated fresh produce. In July we will be taking to the road a bit and traveling to Ladonia. On July 16th we will be hosting with Pig & Whistle Restaurant and provide a drive thru dinner and resource fair with the aid of Texoma Council of Governments. More information on that event will be available ASAP! If your organization, church or business would like to sponsor a night we would really like to keep Tuesday Super Suppers going until
school starts to help families through the summer. You may contact Feeding Fannin through our Facebook page or email terefcfcc@frontier. com or call Tere Curtis during the week at the Crisis Center, 903-583-7694. Anyone wishing to volunteer may contact Andrea Lappin at andrea@fanninccc.org We appreciate all the great support, volunteers and donations from individuals who want to help their neighbors! For Commissioner Precinct 1 • Fannin County Precinct 1 citizens, I need your vote! • I am committed to Fannin County and Precinct 1. • As you can see, I have not tried to win this election by having the most monetary donations, events, and signs. I have intentionally run a financially conservative campaign. I want voters to know this is how I will approach the county budget. Your hard-earned dollars mean a lot to you and I understand that. • I do not have the backing of Fannin County’s political establishment. I would rather have the support of the average taxpayer, I will represent you and work for you. • If you want fairness with no favoritism, honest effort, and realistic solutions for county road care, county business, and county growth, vote RONNIE BALL. • This runoff election is about commitment, and I am committed to you.

Commissioners Discuss Road Maintenance and Bridge Construction and CR 4250, though only one made it into the annual report. Both are under TxDOT construction. There has been a decrease of 2 bridges since last year due to the installation of wider culverts. He estimated he would need $936,000 to maintain the roads of Precinct 2 at the same level. He reported over 20 road signs have been defaced or stolen. Four roads are awaiting inspection. Commissioner Magness stated Precinct 3 has seen an increase in traffic and estimated he would need $1.3 million to maintain his roads, which is the same as last year. He is missing several road and stop signs. CR 2415 will have a new culvert installed. Commissioner Lackey stated the roads in Precinct 4 are primarily in good condition and estimated he would need $710,000 to maintain this condition. He will need to replace 3 stop signs and over 20 road signs. A section of CR 2900 will be closed and moved to a higher elevation. A bridge on CR 2998 is being replaced by TxDOT at no cost to the County, and another on CR 3210 is being repaired. The wooden bridge on CR 2900 is closed and will be replaced with a concrete bridge. A motion to approve the Commissioners’ Annual Road Reports passed. 11 Judge Moore conveyed County Clerk Tammy Biggar’s
request for personnel to clean election equipment between voters, up to 2 people for 9 10-hour days at $10 per hour. The requested wages will be withdrawn from the Covid-19 CARES Act funding. A motion to approve up to $1440 for extra election personnel and cleaning supplies passed. 12 Commissioner Lackey proposed making the following budget amendments for Road and Bridge, Precinct 4: Add revenue to FEMA $54,433.72, add the expense to Rock and Gravel $40,000.00, Culverts $5,000.00 and R & M Parts $9,433.72. These amendments are due to FEMA money from last year that was only just received and are now available to add to the budget to replenish funds. A motion to approve the budget amendments passed. 13 Commissioner Self explained 1.1 miles of CR 5045 pipeline in Leonard was left off the pipeline map, and to amend this, Garney Construction will provide $21,500 for supplementing materials for the next year of maintenance, which will need to be added to Budget Income 79-319-179 and Expense 79-622-341, so the funds can be used this year. A motion to approve the budget amendment passed. 14 Development Services Director Lita Huffman presented a one-time severance of 3.157

A regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at 9:01 a.m. by County Judge Randy Moore, in Bonham City Hall, and via teleconference. Judge Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present. The invocation was given by Pastor Chuck Jestis of Blue Ridge First United Methodist Church. Major James Manis led the pledges. 5 Public Forum: One citizen spoke about the increasing failures of the current voting equipment and urged Commissioners to take action to replace the machines while external funding is an option. 6 Judge Moore began a discussion on the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19 by noting how case numbers have gone up with the reopening of the State, and how Governor Abbott has sought to curtail the rising numbers with new orders returning to some earlier restrictions, such as reducing restaurant capacities from 75% to 50%, and the limit on outdoor gatherings from 500 to 100 people, unless otherwise approved by City Mayor or County Judge. Responsibility for creating and enforcing further guidelines for large outdoor gatherings will fall to local officials, and in compliance, Judge Moore put together a set of guidelines for any event with over 100 people in attendance, excluding places of worship. Judge Moore gave permission for all events that follow these guidelines. He commented that there are 19 ICU beds open in the hospitals in Cooke, Grayson, and Fannin County areas, ready to receive Covid-19 patients if the need arises. Judge Moore urged res-
taurant workers to wear masks. A motion to include Executive Orders GA-26 and GA-28 in the Proclamation, and to extend the Proclamation one week, passed. 7 A motion to include Executive Orders GA-26 and GA-28 in the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County, and to extend the Plan one week, passed. 8 Judge Moore relayed the suggestion of Charles Edwards of Texas Community Development Block Grant (TxCDBG) Resource Management that the item regarding the recommendation from DBI Engineers for water line materials supply for the Hickory Creek Project 7219149 is premature. A motion to table the item indefinitely passed. 9 Judge Moore explained that the supermajority required to approve the Change in Lake Zoning for Lake Trail Estates last week was not achieved as a supermajority because he, Judge Moore, did not participate in the vote. This week, a motion was made to approve the zoning change. All Commissioners and Judge Moore voted yes, except for Commissioner Magness, who dissented. Motion passed with a supermajority. Judge Moore commented that he spoke with Clint Hemby, and found the owner of Lake Trail Estates open to dedicating some land to a safe play area for children of the community. 10 Commissioners presented their Annual Road Reports: Commissioner Whitlock stated Precinct 1 has 2 bridges currently closed, on CR 1020 and CR 4130. He estimated he would need $1 million to fix the roads in his Precinct. He is missing several road signs that have been stolen. Commissioner Self stated Precinct 2 has 2 bridges closed, on CR 5060

A motion to approve the severance passed. 15 A motion to give access to Development Services Director Lita Huffman to make changes to the Development Services webpage for Fannin County passed. 16 Auditor Alicia Whipple conveyed Purchasing Agent Michelle Case’s request for permission to solicit a formal bid for Fuel and Oil for vehicles at Sheriff’s Office and all precincts. A motion to approve the solicitation for bids passed.

19 Judge Moore introduced Sydney Newman, Paris District Bridge and Hydraulics Engineer for TxDOT, to present to the Commissioners the Equivalent Match Program through TxDOT for bridges, culverts, and more in relation to the Lake Ralph Hall Project. Mr. Newman explained that the Program is how most Counties cover their portion when TxDOT uses federal funds to replace County bridges, and offers a 10% cost share, though TxDOT covers the cost of the development, plans, and environmental clearance. He noted that 5 CR bridges will be affected by Lake Ralph Hall. The engineer contract is in the process of being awarded to Huitt-Zollars, and Flatiron Construction, who will build the lake. Mr. Newman explained he needs an Advanced Funding Agreement
with the local government and the County’s cost participation before design and environmental work can commence. He noted that in the case of an emergency, such as a bridge closure due to collapse or washout, TxDOT can sometimes begin repairs or replacement with this Program within a few days, and urged Commissioners to communicate with him before patching it up themselves, in order for the County to receive the utmost benefits of the Program. 20 Comments: Commissioner Whitlock reminded listeners that Covid-19 is still serious, and to stay at attention because it’s getting worse. He asked everyone to work together and be a good neighbor. Commissioner Self reminded listeners that the bridge on CR 4250 is now under construction, and CR 5060 will be completed in a few weeks. He asked anyone who notices people stealing road and stop signs to contact their Commissioner.

Though flight and travel restrictions in March led to many room cancellations for the Bed and Breakfast, the Halbrooks were encouraged that many of the guests asked if they could reschedule when some normalcy returned. A wedding booked in June was postponed a year, and other wedding inquiries for the next few months were discouraged for the safety of all involved. What were some creative ways you worked around the shutdowns? Carleton House was able to accommodate a few stranded travelers during the pandemic while following social distancing. With upgraded sanitation and face masks, the Halbrooks are now ready to accept guests at a 50% occupancy. Karen Halbrook, who, in addition to running the Bed and Breakfast and her bakery, is a competent seamstress, responded to the pandemic by producing face masks for first responders and the medical community. I have heard from several friends and family in the past few weeks. The conversation usually starts with the same formalities; then, unable to ignore the elephant in the room, the conversation changes to “this upsidedown world” we are experiencing. The most common response to the changes we are all experiencing is fear! “A scary time,” dwindling hope that things will ever be the same again. Often, the conversation at least dances around the edges of Biblical Prophecy. Yesterday, a young woman that never responds to an attempted change in direction to a discussion of Jesus initiated the conversation. “This”, she said, “makes me think of Revelation [in the Bible]” She went on to say that years ago she read a series of books concerning the second coming of Jesus to this earth. What we are living through now brought her back to those words.” Again, she said, “SCARY!” From my experience, she is not alone. As positive reports from our government officials wane and new threats surface – increased sickness and violence and the nagging feeling that the next hazard is just around the corner. What will we wake up to tomorrow? Will we wake up at all? Some are realizing that the thing they fear the most is their unfamiliarity with the Truth that Jesus Christ will return to this earth – just as He said He would. But why should we fear His return? Isn’t that a good thing? Don’t we raise Hallelujahs and Alleluias to Him every Christmas and Easter? Don’t we speak of Him with reverence and respect? Don’t we know Him, or do we just know about Him? Jesus said prior to His return to this earth, there would be increased violence, plagues, pestilence, and that “People will faint from fear and apprehension because of what is coming on the world.” Luke 21:26 But Jesus also said, “But you, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at the door.” Matthew 24:33 So why the fear from those who claim to be “Christ followers”? It is probably time for us all to have that conversation. Perhaps we need to “repent,” or in laymen’s terms –it is time to change our thinking, to renew our minds, to be born-again. Not long ago, I was asked to be involved in an event. The theme of the event was PRAYER, calling on God to get us out of this mess we are in - such as we see now. God’s promise to His people: “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and repent (turn from) their sinful ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14) Great! Right? When the draft came back to me, the words “repent (turn from) their sinful ways” were left out and replaced with “…” That’s right, three dots … Repentance is the key to all of this fear and cannot be left out of this conversation. To rid the world of fear, God’s people must REPENT and seek His Face. Jesus left us here after we are born-again – to be conformed to HIS IMAGE and to TAKE THE GOOD NEWS OF HIS LIFE, DEATH AND RESURRECTION TO THE WHOLE WORLD AS A KINGDOM OF PRIESTS – to learn to reign on this earth IN HIM…TO LIVE FREE FROM FEAR AND TO SHARE THAT FREEDOM WITH THE WORLD. TO STAND UP, TO BE LIGHT IN A DARK WORLD. As the world cowers, we are to come out of the dark corners by the Power of His Spirt to bring PEACE to the world – HIS PEACE. “The lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth because a priest is the messenger of the Lord of Hosts.” Malachi 2:7

I am not afraid of a virus. I am not afraid of death. I do, however, have one fear - and that is to stand in HIS Presence. I never want to hear the words, “Worthless Servant” (Matthew 25:30) I don’t want Him say that He Gave me His Mind (I Corinthians 2:16) and I didn’t reason with it; that HE gave me His Word and I never learned it; He gave me His Voice and I didn’t use it to proclaim HIM to a lost world because I thought they wouldn’t listen or that I would be embarrassed; He gave me the HIS HOLY SPIRIT - HIS POWER, and I didn’t bind up the sick and broken; He gave me HIS NAME and I shrank back from proudly wearing it.. He gave me His life, but I did not give Him mine! The Greatest Fear I have is that HE would say “I WASN’T YOUR FIRST LOVE!” I hope and pray that at the end of this summer we will not say, “The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not yet saved.” Jeremiah 8:20 Lord Jesus, please change us into a Kingdom of Priests that represent You, our Great High Priest. That we will forgive in Your Name, Pray in Your Name, Speak in Your Name. I pray that we will REPENT of everything that we have put before You. Give us a new Heart that beats only for You. We want You to be our First Love, to Your Glory. Even so, Lord Jesus, COME! Signed: Teri Sheddy

Virtual Summer Camp 2020 Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site By Kathy Lathen, Educator/Interpreter
At the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site, we are going online and virtual with our summer offerings. For three consecutive days, July 21-23, 2020, participants will join a live online Zoom meeting beginning each morning at nine o’clock. Virtual Summer Camp kits are now available at our museum store located at 890 West State Hwy. 56 in Bonham the great price of $19.63, tax included! Each camp kit includes supplies for one student to participate in all three activities as well as an invitation to join the private Zoom meetings, a coupon for a family tour of Sam Rayburn’s home (2 adults + 2 children), a Sam Rayburn House collectible patch and magnet, one gavel pencil, and a scavenger hunt for your visit (scissors, crayons, markers, tape, glue, and empty coffee can or similar container not included). On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, our site’s educator will begin a series of three Zoom meetings with participants who received an invitation to join the meeting with their purchased kit(s). For the first online activity, participants will decorate and complete a kite with string included. Inspired by the textiles created by Rayburn family members of long ago, on July 22, 2020, we will create a paper loom. Our last day of this virtual summer camp hosted by the Sam Rayburn House is July 23, 2020, and we will make a living work of art! The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site tells the real story of Sam Rayburn, one of the most powerful and influential politicians of the 20th century, in his authentic 1916 home. Preserved as a period time capsule, the two-story home contains all original Rayburn furnishings and housewares. The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site is one of 32 historic attractions operated by the Texas Historical Commission. For more information, visit www.visitsamrayburnhouse.com.

The warden then con580-326-3240 tacted dispatch, who advised that the subject was wanted on three felony warrants out of Sabine County. The man’s actions and demeanor led the warden to ask a female subject with the man for consent to search their vehicle but was denied. A canine officer was called and upon arriving to the scene quickly alerted to the pres-

He’s Going Fore-ward: Class 1A Dodd City ties for 17th 6/9/20 in abridged Lone Star Cup races Ector golfer Earl to continue links days at Crowley’s Ridge
Dodd City head volleyball coach Alex Stephenson talks to the Lady Hornets last season during a timeout. The team advanced again last November to the volleyball regional quarterfinals before many of the same players helped Dodd City’s girls basketball squad -- also coached by Stephenson-- in February reach its sixth-consecutive regional tournament appearance. By Rich Hilliard ECTOR -- Memories a plenty have been made by Austin Earl at the Billie Finnell Gym on the Ector Independent School District campus. On his home court -- and elsewhere -- a scene frequently occurred during the 2020 Ector graduate’s high school basketball career: Him shooting and ripping 3-pointers. His prowess behind the arc -and overall skills on the court -- helped Ector last season to its third boys basketball district title in the last four years, second regional quarterfinals trip during that span, a 30-7 overall record during his senior season and a sixth-consecutive post-

season for the Eagles. However, he will extend his athletic career in another sport -- one in which he qualified for State as a junior. Earl agreed to play golf for Crowley’s Ridge College in Paragould, Ark., on June 24 in a signing ceremony held, appropriately, at center court in the Billie Finnell Gym with family, coaches, administrators, teammates and friends on hand. “My friend, Kenny Nelms, [signed with them for baseball] and got me in contact with the golf coaches there,” said Earl of his fellow 2020 Ector graduate, “and they wanted me on the (golf) team.” “All of my family plays golf,”
he said. “I’ve been raised around it. “I wanted to take after my Dad, uncle and all of them.” Note: Though COVID-19 cut short Earl’s high school golf career on March 16 -- when the University Interscholastic League first paused and a month later cancelled all spring sports seasons -- the global pandemic did not deprive him of reaching the pinnacle: State. As a junior, Earl tied for 14th in a field of 72 golfers --competing in the Class 1A state boys tournament for the first time. Earl, a regional qualifier as a freshman, had a two-round 181 total -- he improved by five strokes during his second round, shooting an 88.
By Rich Hilliard Despite a prematurely ended school year due to COVID-19, Dodd City still finished in the Top 25 of the Lone Star Cup final standings for Class 1A. With 22 points, Dodd City ended the 2019-20 school year in a seven-way tie for 17th in 1A with Blackwell, Calvert, Gail Borden County, Hamlin, Rankin and White Deer. Blum and Miller Grove tied with 36 points for the 1A championship which, along with the awards usually bestowed to the top school in each of the other five University Interscholastic League classifications, will not be this year due to the cancellation of the sanctioned spring events. The awards -- “based on team performance in district and state championships”, per
the UIL website -- have been distributed at the end of every school year since the 1997-98 slate. In athletics, Dodd City in the abridged school year accomplished: top district 1A seed to and regional quarterfinalist in the girls volleyball playoffs, qualified girls and boys teams as district runnerups for regionals and advanced an individual from each to the state competitions in cross country; district champion and regional semifinalist in girls basketball; district runner-up and area finalist in boys basketball. Overall, the category results used to determine this year’s Lone Star Cup standings included: team tennis, cross country, marching band, volleyball, robotics BEST, foot-
ball, congress, spirit, swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, film, basketball and theatrical design. The remainder of the 1A Lone Star Cup final standings for the 2019-20 school year included these places, schools and points: No. 3. Nazareth 32; No. 4. Ropesville Ropes 29; No. 5T. LaRue LaPoynor 28, Neches 28; No. 7T. Eden 26, Jayton 26, Lipan 26, New Home 26, Richland Springs 26, Saltillo 26, Tilden McMullen County 26; No. 14T. Pct. 1 RESIDENTS My name is Vernon Richardson and I want to express what a great choice you have in voting Edwina Lane for County Commissioner. I first met Edwina and Mike when the school district I was Superintendent of contracted their company to train our armed faculty security team. Edwina is the type of person that addresses problem solving through a task-oriented approach. I grew up in this area and have seen many problems continuously get limited resources thrown at them only to return without the underlying cause ever being addressed. It’s time we try something new. Fannin County has never elected a female Commissioner much less one with her skill set. She has my full confidence! Political Ad Paid For By Vernon Richardson
