Texas State Representative Reggie Smith. Photo by Sandy Hood By Sandy Hood Representative Smith humbly stated that serving as our representative has been one of the greatest privileges of his life and that there is nothing more special than serving Texas. He said that Texas is the 10th largest economy in the world. The main focus of the last legislative session was property tax reform and school finance reform. Everything was not accomplished on property taxes because it is a big state with big problems. Here is what he had time to cover: • HB1 is the $250 billion, two year budget that pays for the needs of Texas. This budget is up 5.9% because of population growth in Texas and inflation. About $86 billion of this money comes from the Feds and is connected to Medicare. • SB 2 was the Property Tax Reform Bill where cities, counties and emergency service districts must hold an election if they wish to raise 3.5% more property tax revenue than the previous year. What we currently have is 8%. What was happening is, as our property appraisals went up, the money that came from the state went down just by the way the system was designed. So, as Texas economy was booming and property values were going up and up, the amount of money coming from the state level; for public education was going down, down. Going into the 2019 session, 38% of every dollar for public education was coming from Austin and the difference was coming from us and a small part from the Feds. With the $5 million injection that comes from HB 3, the percentage went from 38% to 45%, and this is where our property tax relief comes from. Cities, counties and emergency service districts must hold an election if they wish to raise 3.5% more property tax revenue than the previous year. • HB 3 provides for a 2.5% revenue cap for schools. This will start in 2021. In the meantime, for 2019 we are going to have an 8 cent compression on the tax rate and a 13 cent compression for 2020. There is not

By Bro. Bill Beasley For several years now it has been my privilege to write a weekly article for the local
Reliving My World War II Days
newspaper. Much of the material has come from the memorable exploits that make up my life. I have tried to point my reading public to spiritual lessons learned along the way. I will be doing the same in the series planned on the theme before us “Reliving My World War II Days.” My World War II days had its beginning on December 7, 1941 and ending with VJ Day in the South Pacific 1945. Peace, though elusive, brought hope to a troubled world.

While my time spent in active combat duty was limited to a period of three years, it was a mammoth experience for a nineteen year old, less than a year out of high school. For me, World War began this way. Though a Mississippian by birth, I was now making my home in Texas and becoming a Texan with its accent, as quickly as possible. It was Sunday, December 7 and I was attending services at First Baptist Church with my adopted family. It was a normal morning but it was not to remain that way - for in store for America and the world was a devastating attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese warplanes. I shall never forget the

mood that settled over the congregation for the evening service. The next day brought the Declaration of War by President Franklin Roosevelt. World War II continued until 1945, my role was active from December 12, 1942 until VJ Day. Now, almost seventy eight years later I am proud to relive WWII as I experienced it. I do this for those of you who are lovers of history and for those of you, young and old alike, who are interested in the background of our great nation. God has blessed America immeasurably. Let us join in prayer that we allow him to keep her great.

Bethlehem COOKING Baptist Church IN FANNIN Bonham, Texas COUNTY 10/4/16Young adult bowling
by Tommie Sue Turner
Here’s a recipe for your kids or grandkids to enjoy this summer. It should be fun to make. EDIBLE AQUARIUM 1 (4 oz.) pkg. blueberry Jello ¾ cups boiling water ½ cup cold water Gummy fish Dissolve Jello completely in boiling water. Combine cold water and enough ice cubes to make about 1 ¼ cup. Add to Jello, stirring until slightly thickened. Remove any unmelted ice. If mixture is still thin, refrigerate until slightly thick. Pour thickened Jello into 4 clear dessert glasses. Suspend gummy fish in Jello. Refrigerate until set (about 1 hour). Please send me your favorite or unique recipes to 300 E. Russell Ave., Bonham, TX 75418, or take them by the Leader’s office at 224 N. Main St. in Bonham.

10 Consideration and Action to approve payment of bills County Judge for County Auditor – Commissioner Magness made a motion to pay the bills. Commissioner Self seconded. Motion carried. 11 Comments by County Commissioners and County Judge: • Commissioner Whitlock stated that he appreciated the flag presentation; he had a dad who fought in WWII and was real particular about the American flag. He hopes that everyone thinks about what we are celebrating on the 4th of July and has fun with their families. He thanked everyone who were attending court on this day. • Commissioner Self wants everyone to enjoy the 4 of July and be safe. Fireworks can be dangerous. • Commissioner Magness stated that he had nothing to add. • Commissioner Lackey stated that the courthouse cleaning is still coming along and the east side is looking real good. He has been told that the cleaning is on schedule and that ev-
erything is going to come real clean. Commissioner Lackey stated that they are real behind on the roads. He is normally paving right now, but is not, because they are working on some washed out culverts. Dodd City got 2 inches of rain on July 1st. He is asking for every one’s patience on the roads. The farmers use the dirt roads and there are mud holes that are unbelievable (some are 100 yards long). We are trying to do the best we can for them so they can get their crops out because this is how they make a living. South of Windom is a mess. We have a lot of dirt roads with major mud holes. We can hardly get through the roads let alone repair them. We dump rock in the holes to build a rock base. It has just been a tough, tough year for roads. He thanked everyone for their patience and for attending court. • Judge Moore informed everyone that he received a notice from the Forest Service that fireworks are prohibited in National Forests and Grasslands. No fireworks at Lake Fannin, Caddo, Coffee Mill or Crock-

ett. Last Thursday Johnny D White was on a ladder and fell off and broke his leg in 2 or 3 places. He is in Medical City in Plano in terrible pain. This will take several surgeries to fix. He will need to stay in the hospital until they do the surgery and they cannot do it for 10 days. He asked that we all pray for Johnny D. Judge Moore thanked Major Manis for the American flag presentation. A reminder that July 4th is about the independence of our country.

Securities offered through Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. member FINRA/SIPC Investment Advisory Services offered through Raymond James Financial Services Advisors, Inc.
In a fee-based account, clients pay a quarterly fee, based on the level of assets in the account, for the services of a financial advisor as part of an advisory relationship. In deciding to pay a fee rather than commissions, client should understand that the fee may be higher than a commission alternative during periods of lower trading. Advisory fees are in addition to the internal expenses charged by mutual funds and other investment company securities. To the extent that clients intend to hold these securities, the internal expenses should be included when evaluating the costs of a fee-based account. Clients should periodically re-evaluate whether the use of an asset-based fee continues to be appropriate in servicing their needs. These additional considerations, as well as the fee schedule, are listed more fully in the Client Agreement and the firm’s Wrap Fee Program Brochure & Brochure Supplement for Ambassador or the firm’s Form ADV Part 2A & Brochure Supplement for Passport.

Food Pantry Needs Help 3-26-19 Feeding the Hungry
Article and photo by Sandy Hood After visiting the food pantry at Fannin County Community Ministries, I have laid awake at night wondering what it would be like to have very little resources and limited food to feed my family. Families can visit the food pantry 1 time a month and an additional 4 times a year in desperate times. Food bank volunteers shared stories with me of homeless mothers with small children that come and get food that they do not have to cook because they live in their cars, a man that lives in his van, families with small children that are hungry and how they serve a lot of elderly and disabled people. Fannin County Community Ministries (FCCM) has

about 1,900 active families in their system and serves about 1,500 people a month. These are Fannin County people they serve. These are Fannin County people who, for whatever reason find themselves hungry. Hunger is not an issue that affects only certain demographics or geographical areas. It is a problem that can affect anyone, anytime, for a multitude of reasons. The food pantry volunteers do their best to serve the hungry in OUR community, but, they need our help. Feeding the hungry is definitely the passion of this group of volunteers that keep this food pantry up and running. Over and over, I heard one after another, tell me their story of how God called them to volunteer at FCCM. FCCM is a non-profit and has

Fear That Rumbling Sound At about 11:30 p.m. on June 21, a Government Canyon State Park police officer received a missing persons call from the San Antonio Police Department. It seems the missing person called 911 from somewhere in the park reporting that an animal had been following and growling at her, so she had taken refuge by climbing a tree. The park police officer searched her last reported location to no avail, but was able to make contact on her cell phone to reassure her help was on the way. She urged him to please hurry because an animal she believed to be a wild pig was nearby and growling. He informed her he would turn on his truck siren and asked her to listen. She was unable to hear his siren, so the officer told her to use her iPhone to send him her location by text message, which she did. The officer then hiked to that location and found her and a male subject in a tree. She warned the officer that the pig was still close by and she heard it just a few minutes before he arrived. Shortly after that, the officer heard a car drive over the rumble strips nearby on Galm Road and watched as the woman’s body language immediately changed. The officer asked if they believed the noise they just heard was a pig and both nodded. He explained it was only cars crossing rumble strips on the road nearby. Embarrassed by the misperceived threat, the lost hikers were reassured by the officer that the unknown can be scary and their reaction surprisingly common.

Cmr. Bush Announces Launch Of New Texas Veterans Land Board Website
AUSTIN - Today, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush announced the launch of the new Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) website. The redesigned website allows the VLB to efficiently and effectively serve Texas Veterans and their families by placing information only a click away. The redesigned website offers quick access to essential information for Veterans who wish to access benefits offered by the VLB. The website also features a new calendar function, allowing individuals to locate events that are ongoing at the Texas State Veterans Homes and Texas State Veteran Cemeteries, in addition to Veterans events where a VLB representative will be present to assist Veterans, Military Members and their families. Further, the website is fully responsive and provides more information regarding programs and services available to our Veterans than ever before.
Commissioner Bush is committed to making government more efficient and bringing new ideas and technology to the General Land Office. As technology continues to evolve, so must the way in which we communicate with our Veterans. “As Texas Land Commissioner, nothing is more important to me than fighting for our Veterans,” said Commissioner Bush. “That’s why the GLO and VLB have led the way in increasing and streamlining Veteran services. From buying a home to building retirement homes, our office is working every day to honor those who have honored us with their service. The redesigned website provides increased functionality and ties together information regarding all of the services that the VLB has to offer, furthering our mission of taking care of Texas Veterans.” The VLB website will be updated on a regular basis with
new events, blog posts, activities, and information. Visitors are encouraged to explore the redesigned website and sign up for the latest updates from the Veterans Land Board. To learn more about the VLB, visit https://vlb.texas.gov/ In the early days of the Texas Republic, land was awarded for military service during the Texas Revolution. In 1946, this tradition was formally recognized with the creation of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) to administer benefits exclusively for Texas Veterans. Today, the VLB continues to expand the programs and services available to Texas Veterans, Military Members, and their families. The VLB offers land, home, and home improvement loans; nine long-term care facilities; four Texas State Veterans Cemeteries; the Voices of Veterans Oral History Program and a Statewide Veterans Call Service Center.
Local Man Wins Spur Award
Mike Blakely (left) and Damon Rogers (right). Press release - Local horseand cattleman Damon Rogers of Leonard received a Spur Award from Western Writers of America in Tucson, AZ, on June 22 for Best Western Song of the Year. Rogers co-wrote the winning song with singer/songwriter and novelist Mike Blakely of Fredericksburg. This marks Blakely’s third Spur award. The winning song is the title cut on Blakely’s most recent album, “The Outside Circle.” Rogers co-wrote three of the songs on the album, which is Blakely’s 13th full-length album of original songs. He has released 19 books, mostly historical fiction, through major New York City publishers. His most recent literary release was “A Sinister Splendor,” a historically accurate portrayal of the Mexican War of the 1840s, which came out in February and is receiving much acclaim. “The Outside Circle,” in cowboy terms, is the longest, roughest trail that requires the most experienced rider. The song that Blakely and Rogers co-wrote, gives three stages of a cowhand’s life: wanting to be chosen to ride the outside circle, having the honor to ride
it, and then looking back on the experience as an aging ranch
Honey Grove
foreman. The album, released in June 2018, was nominated for Album of the Year by the International Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists. Rogers manages EC Ranch in Celeste and co-owns Handlebar D Express chuckwagon food service along with his wife, Nicole Martin. Blakely received the Spur Award for Best Western Novel in 2001 for Summer of Pearls, and “The Last Wild White Buffalo” won Best Western Song in 2008. Copies of “The Outside Circle” are available at www. mikeblakely.com or for download at store.cdbaby.com/cd/ mikeblakely12. “A Sinister Splendor” can be found at Amazon.com or other major book retailers, along with at www. mikeblakely.com

JAMES R. MELTON AUGUST 24, 1940 – JUNE 30, 2019 James Ray (Jim) Melton w e n t peacefully home to be with the Lord on June 30, 2019 after a lengthy illness. The family received friends at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 6th at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. A funeral service and celebration of Dr. Melton’s life was held at 11:00 AM. Interment followed at the Aggie Field of Honor. Born in Paris, Texas on August 24, 1940, James grew up in the Dial community of northeast Texas where he graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1958. He studied Agronomy at Texas Tech University and married his high school sweetheart Sue Rae Dawson after receiving his BS degree from Tech in 1962. As newlyweds, James and Sue moved to East Lansing, Michigan so Jim could continue his education at Michigan State University. He received his Master’s degree, then PhD in 1968. Upon graduating, James, Sue and their two daughters moved to College Station, Texas where James joined the faculty at Texas A&M University in Ag Analytical Services. Two more daughters were soon welcomed into the family. James did research and tested feed and fertilizer standards, taught, published, and was a member of several professional organizations. He retired in 1986. Jim’s first priority in life was clear – his devotion to his Lord, Jesus Christ. He and Sue were faithful members of First Baptist Church College Station where Jim served as a deacon from a very young age, taught youth boys Sunday School, played the piano, served on committees and in the Discovery International Program. Jim passed on a legacy of faith to his family and friends, and his servant heart was evident as he was often observed helping others by taking food to the sick, visiting in the local hospitals, and helping the elderly and those in need with yard work and other chores. He was also an active member of the Gideons and was devoted for many years to Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) first in the men’s program and then as a children’s program leader. Jim’s hobbies included playing badminton, golf, and racquetball, attending Aggie sports and most notably spending time with family, where he was an especially devoted Papa to his ten grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Louie Ray and Edna (Rosson) Melton. Survivors include his wife, Sue; four daughters, Sherry Heritage & husband Tracy, Karen Zuehl & husband Trey, Alisa Turner & husband Chuck, and Laurie Jacobs; sister Barbara Ellis & her husband Fred; brother-in-law, James Dawson & wife Rozann; twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one niece and two nephews. If friends desire, memorials may be made to Dial Baptist Church or First Baptist Church College Station. The family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to the staff at Accel for the loving care provided to Jim and his family over the past 18 months.

Fannin County Relay for Life Rated Top Relay in the Dallas Region
By Sandy Hood
What a nice way to celebrate Fannin County’s 20th Relay for Life event. We may be a small county, but we do put up a big fight! After every relay event, everyone that registered gets to fill out a survey on their overall experience that includes pros and cons. We were named the top rated relay event in the American Cancer Society – North Texas of the Dallas Region. WOW! Another piece of exciting news is that we exceeded out goal of raising $70,000. Money continued to trickle in after the event and our final dollar amount raised is $71,685.11. Relay for Life is about a community taking up the fight against cancer. Event coordinators thank everyone for their overwhelming support and for making Fannin County #1.
Quilt Hop To Feature Dreaming Of The Stars UT Austin’s Briscoe Center for American History will be sharing with our Quilt Hop twenty-eight extraordinary quilts from its Astronomical Quilts, Block Challenge Collection. The Quilts were created from blocks made in response to a challenge issued by the International Quilt Festival in 2013. The challenge was inspired by a quilt block hand sewn by NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg while serving aboard the International Space Station in 2013. The 2013 challenge invited quilters from around the world to make astronomically-themed blocks that could used in a single collaborative quilt for display at the 2014 International Quilt Festival in Houston. Nearly 2,400 quilt blocks were submitted from around the world, prompting volunteers from NASA and Quilts, Inc. to join forces and assemble the blocks into these 28 quilts that were displayed at the festival. In 2015, those quilts were gifted to the Briscoe Center for permanent preservation and research. All blocks are astronomical-themed designs so fabrics with stars, comets, rockets, planets and galaxies abound, as well as red, white and blue colors and US patriotic
fabrics. However, look for surprises such as camouflage fabric, fabric featuring Elvis Presley, or fabric that pays dribute to Green Bay Packers. You could also notice the wide range of skills of the quilt makers, and the significant contribution of children, and blocks signed by men. Most blocks are signed and dated and many offer location information. Some were made from modern fabric, but some came from old fabric stashes. The majority of the blocks are from the US, but many were sewn in Russia, some from Canada, Venezuela, Norway, Ireland, Mexico, Uraguay, South Africa, Japan, Scotland, Costa Rica, England, and Israel. These wonderful astronomical quilts will be on display at the Creative Art Center, the Sam Rayburn Library, and the Sam Rayburn House. Quilts from other quilters will be on display at the Bonham Visitor Center, Fannin County Museum of History, Historical Commission, Bonham Public Library, Bonham Senior Center, and the Episcopal of Honey Grove. Join us Friday July 26 and Saturday July 27 as we hop to ten different locations to enjoy over 300 different quilts.

First head coach excited to lead Sam Rayburn’s new v’ball program
for seventh- and eighth-grade girls there in the upcoming fall semester, with Ali Wood as head coach and Melissa (Ross) Rich, a 2000 Bonham graduate, as the assistant coach. “Getting hired at Sam Rayburn ISD has been a huge blessing. I am beyond excited to start the volleyball program -- something I Ali Wood will be Sam Rayburn’s first head was passionate about when I was volleyball coach. SRISD courtesy photo growing up,” said

IVANHOE -- It has been a successful decade for girls sports at Sam Rayburn -- even considering how prominent the program there has previously been. In May, the Lady Rebels made their longest postseason run in softball -- to the Region II-2A semifinals -- since firsttime trips to the 1A state championship in 2012 and 2013. During the decade, Sam Rayburn has again been a regional tournament team in girls basketball. Last fall, the Lady Rebels advanced as a team to the state cross country meet -- after qualifying an individual for Round Rock for the first time in school history in 2015. As the current decade concludes, Sam Rayburn will take the first step toward building an additional apex achieving program: volleyball. The sport will be an option
Wood. “I trusted Sam Rayburn just like they have entrusted me to make it become successful to the students! “I have always been passionate about children and their success academically and athletically,” she said. “The fact that it is my first year teaching and the program’s first year -the traditions and memories I get to be a part of and establish -- is going to be rewarding. “I am excited for the students to finally get what they have asked for for so long. This is all going to be a great challenge to me!” Wood, who graduated in May 2017 with a Bachelor of Science from Sam Houston State University with a major in kinesiology and minor in health, has spent the last year and a half as a coach at The Little Gym of Preston and For-
est in Dallas. “I have taught self-confidence [and] social skills, as well as physical development to children through gymnastics,” said Wood. “I believe The Little Gym has taught me valuable life lessons that I can carry with me throughout my coaching and teaching career at Sam Rayburn.” Wood comes to Sam Rayburn following a successful career as an athlete in Texas during high school and college. At Pittsburg High School, she competed in volleyball, cross country, softball, track and cheer. Her accomplishments included: all-district libero in volleyball, regional qualifier in cross country and in softball being an all-district outfielder who received scholarship offers to play out-ofstate. However, the later, cheer -in which Wood had competed since age four -- proved the one in which she had the most success -- enough to extend it from childhood into high school into college. Her high school competitive cheer career included being a four-year All-American -noted for best jumps, best tumbling and most school-spirited. At Sam Houston State, she cheered for four years on the all-girl squad -- highlighted by winning the National Cheerleaders Association championship for the 2013-2014 school year. Runner-up team finishes at the event followed the next three years. Said Wood: “I am now a Sam Rayburn Rebel!”
