Sam Rayburn Museum Quilt Exhibit in Bonham, Texas

from

at the Sam Rayburn Museum, a division of the Briscoe Center in Bonham, Texas.

Politics have historically inspired quilters to create works dedicated to a party, political, and ideological figures. This exhibition displays examples, drawn from the Winedale Quilt Collection, of how some quilters have expressed political beliefs and support for candidates

with both original and wellknown patterns throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Selected quilts include homages or gifts to charismatic Texans such as W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel, John Nance Garner, and Ann Richards.

The exhibit coincides with the 2024 Bonham Quilt Hop on Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event features hundreds of quilts across nine locations, as

well as craft and quilt vendors, demonstrations, workshops, and Fat Quarter bingo. For more information on the Bonham Quilt Hop, contact the Bonham Visitors’ Center at 903-583-9830 or email info@ visitbonham.com.

The Winedale Quilt Collection is a scholarly resource that supports the study of quilts and their history. Its mission is to collect, preserve, and provide access to American quilts and documenting the role of quilts in American culture. The quilts currently on display joined the collection as individual donations or as collections assembled by Joyce Gross, Sherry Cook, and Katherine Adams.

There are 132 Historical Markers in Fannin County according to the Texas Historical Commission (THC) website. Each week I will search the County and post a pic along with the Marker location and the Marker text. If you have a specific Marker you want to see in the Leader, email the pic to fcltimmeek@gmial.com

“A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.”

Location: near the entrance of Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham.

Marker Text: Established at this site as a key part of Civil War defense of Texas by General Henry E. McCulloch, frontier fighter and Ranger of long experience.

With supervision of 7 brigades fighting in Texas, Indian Territory and Arkansas, McCulloch had here only 2 cavalry and 4 infantry units, to patrol and defend 600 miles along the Red River and western frontier against hostile Indians, bands of armed deserters, Federals attempting invasion and disloyal citizens encouraging invasion.

Food and arms were also furnished from here for armed forces and for friendly Indian families.

Colonel William C. Quantrill, C. S. A., and his notorious guerrilla raiders, including future members of the James and Younger gangs, attached themselves in 1836-64 to this command. Though the guerrillas were credited with stopping cattle thefts along the Red River, Quantrill had to be arrested for killing draft evaders and deserters and shooting up towns. However, he soon escaped. Lines of communication and supply were kept open and lives of hundreds of settlers were saved through the operations of this command.

Just as in last weeks Commissioners Court, Judge Cunningham expressed his frustration with Commission Pct. 2 A.J. Self and his continued lack of answering questions, meeting with the Judge and attorneys. He also indicated the Ipad that was turned in had been erased and that money would have to be spent for forensics to recover the lost data.

Commissioner Self responded and reported that he turned the IPad in to the IT department for them to erase so it could be used by someone else instead of having to purchase another one. Commissioner Self indicated the only information on the Ipad was emails and that he did not use it. Fannin County resident Jason Walker asked why the previous County Judge, Randy Moore, who signed most of the Courthouse orders, had not been questioned and deposed. He also asked why the inspectors who signed off on the construction are

not being questioned Much discussion continued between the Judge and Mr. Walker.

Judge Cunningham indicated that he has talked to Randy Moore and that the voting records clearly show who voted for what regarding the Courthouse construction.

Judge Cunningham responded that there is information that he cannot disclose at this time and to “watch the end of the show.”

24. Justice Center – County Judge. Judge Cunningham said we are still waiting on cost information.

25. County budget and revenue sources – County Judge. Judge Cunningham restated the County’s intent to sell County property to pay for the Justice Center financial shortfalls and that any monies left over would be used to balance the County budget.

31. EXECUTIVE

SESSION: Consultation with Attorney, a closed meeting will be held pursuant to Section 551.0725 for deliberation regarding contract negotiations where deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the County’s interests with a third party; and Section 551.071 of the Government Code regarding consultation with attorney to seek advice on pending and contemplated litigation, settlements, and other matters, which are confidential under the Disciplinary Rules of the State Bar, on which the duty

of the attorney of the County under the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct clearly conflicts with the Open Meetings Act, regarding the financing and the operation of the Fannin County Jail and Detention Center and Amended and Restated Facility Operation & Management Agreement of the 96 bed County Facility – County Judge. The 5-year contract with LaSalle Corrections to operate the Fannin County Jail South Annex on CR 4200 will coincide with LaSalle’s contract to operate the Fannin County Detention Center on Silo Road. The daily rate for county detainees will increase from just over $56 per day to $77 per day beginning October 2024 which is well below the state average. The cost of the facility renovation will be paid from the funds currently being held by the County in the inmate commissary funds which will include the addition of double security fence and gates. LaSalle will also make available to its employees health care benefits that, at a minimum, are comparable to those provided by the County to its employees. The Fannin Annex will have considerable security renovations under the new contract. Approved 35. Adjourn

Lexington edged the Warriors, 13-12, in its third of three games played on June 28.

Honey Grove advanced by defeating Brazos,

In Pool G action, Honey Grove defeated Grapeland, 14-12, and lost to Sunray, 14-13, on June 27.

The Warriors then topped Poth, 24-18, on June 28, after inclement weather postponed the June 27 contest.

Class 3A-II Leonard will compete for a second-straight postseason football trip this fall. A neutral site game against ranked competition will start the Tigers' regular season: Thursday,

Aug. 29, at Melissa vs. Jefferson which is No. 15 in Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine's 3A-I preseason poll for 2024.

Leonard, an area finalist last season, will then be home often during the first full month of the season: Sept. 6 vs. 3A-I Emory Rains, Sept.

13 at 3A-II Prairiland, Sept. 20 vs. Lindsay, Sept. 27 District 7-3A-II opener vs. Callisburg. Of these, Lindsay ranked No. 15 in the magazine's 2A-II preseason poll.

The remainder of 7-3A-II play will follow: Oct. 4 at Howe, Oct. 11 vs. Blue Ridge, Oct. 18 at S&S Consolidated, Oct. 25 District Open Date, Nov. 1 vs. Bells, Nov. 7 at Gunter.

Of the Tigers' 7-3A-II competition, defending State champion Gunter holds the top ranking in 3A-II and Bells equates No. 17 in the same preseason poll.

Bowden exits, Eddins in as HFC/AD at 1A-II Fannindel

Denver Bowden will not return for a third season as Class 1A-II Fannindel's head football coach.

Phillip Eddins has been hired to fill the position and be the school's athletic director.

Bowden, who took a job at a Dallas private school, coached the Falcons (5-6, 2-1) to their sixth-straight six-man postseason in 2022 via a bi-district advance after being District 9-1AII's runner-up.

In 2023, Fannindel (5-4, 1-2) tied for 9-1A-II's runner-up postseason berth with Trinidad and Apple Springs, but lacked the necessary tiebreaker to advance. --Rich Hilliard

High On Honey Grove:

2A-I

Story and photos by Rich Hilliard

Look for Class 2A-I Honey Grove to outdo its historic 2023 season with an even better 2024, per the latter year’s edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.

The annual summer read has the Warriors, a 10-2 region semifinalist in 2023, reaching the final four in the 2024 playoffs. To do so, the magazine predicts Hone Grove will avenge last year’s season-ending loss to eventual 2A-I champion Timpson in a rematch in the 2024 Region III-2A final.

The Warriors, in Shane Fletcher’s third season as head coach, will also dethrone reigning district champion Cooper, a 2023 region semifinalist and long-time sports rival, to win District 9-2A-I, per the magazine.

The publication’s 2A-I preseason 2024 poll, headed by its championship favorite, Ganado, includes Honey Grove at No. 3 and Cooper at No. 8. A couple of consecutive Warriors’ predistrict opponents in 2024 also appear in the rankings: Marlin (Sept. 6) at No. 11 in 2A-I and Winnsboro (Sept. 13) at No. 12 in 3A-I.

Three Honey Grove players also earned 2A preseason allstate recognition from the magazine: Ryelan Morris as an offensive utility player, Brody Mahan as a defensive lineman and Levi Beavers as a linebacker.

Morris, a running back and quarterback, also garnered the Preseason Offensive MVP and Beavers, a linebacker, claimed the Preseason Defensive MVP in 9-2A-I, per the magazine. Meanwhile, look for 3A-II Leonard to reach its secondstraight postseason under

third-year Tigers’ head coach Justin Dozier, per the publication.

The magazine forsees Leonard, an area finalist in 2023, as finishing third in 7-3A-II to advance, with quarterback Jacoby LaCook as the district’s Preseason Offensive MVP.

The publication has undefeated 3A-II State 2023 champion Gunter defending its title, top-ranked and winning 7-3A-II and Bells, ranked No. 17 in the same 3A-II preseason poll, as the district’s runner-up.

Leonard will also start its regular season on Thursday, Aug. 29, against a ranked opponent -- Jefferson, No. 15 in the magazine’s 3A-I poll, in a neutral site game at Melissa.

Conversely, the magazine has no such favorable predictions for Fannin County’s other four varsity football programs in 2024.

Fannindel will equate the odd team out, per the magazine, of the postseason qualifiers in the three-team 10-1A-II, which includes No. 19 ranked in 1AII and district championship favorite Gold-Burg. ROY LEE PETRICH

Roy Lee Petrich passed away at his home on June 28, 2024 in Bonham, TX. Roy was born to W.A. Bill and Lena (Hendrix) Petrich on January 2, 1941. Roy came from very humble beginnings. He was born in a one-bedroom farmhouse in Haskell, Texas. His parents had 3 biological children and one child they raised as their own. As Roy would often say he was “born before electricity was a common household item.” His family may not have had much, but one thing they had in abundance was love. Roy’s father was a farmer, and while the children were young, his mother was a housewife. After her children were raised, Lena would go on to become a licensed vocational nurse. Growing up on the farm, Roy said, they were poor, but they didn’t know any better. After being raised on the farm, Roy joined the United States Air Force at the young age of 18. In 1959, knowing he would soon be drafted, Roy decided to enlist voluntarily before going on to proudly serve our country for 23 years. The Air Force took him around the world, serving in Vietnam, Bermuda, Germany, and many other places. He retired in 1982 as a Captain, receiving a Bronze Star for his service. While on active duty, Roy also managed to earn a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree. Upon completion of his military services, Roy went on to dedicate fourteen years of employment with the Texas Workforce Commission where he retired in 1999.

Roy married his first wife, Wanda Donaldson, while she was still a senior in high school. They had 3 wonderful children together – Tammy, Boyd, and Susan. Roy and Wanda were married for 15 years before they departed amicably. Roy later married the love of his life, Connie Chalstrom, on December 21, 1979. They were together for 43 years before Connie went to be with the Lord last year. They loved travelling all over the world during their retirement, enjoying the view from their gorgeous lakefront home, and spending time with their family and friends. Roy would also play Santa every year for the children in the community. Roy’s daughter, Tammy, was married to Lester Kasparek for 20 years before she went to be with the Lord in 2009. Together, they had a daughter, Leslie, who married Nathan Markiewicz. Today, Nathan and Leslie have 2 boys, Braxton Beau and Rylan Rebel Markiewicz. Even though Rylan’s middle name is Rebel, Roy only referred to him as “Rebel.”

Roy is survived by his son, Boyd Petrich and wife Pam of Cypress, Texas, their sons Chase Petrich of Houston, Texas, and Will Petrich and partner Gizel Arreola of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also survived by his daughter, Susan Warnick, and her husband Scott, of Dallas, Texas. Other survivors include sisters Gereldine and husband Bill Baker of Haskell, Texas, Willie Faye “Sis” Tidrow, also of Haskell, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Lena Petrich, wife Connie Petrich, daughter Tammy Kasparek, a son who passed at birth, Jason Carl Petrich, brother-in-law Lonnie Hise, brother- in-law Gaston Tidrow, and cousin/brother Delbert Howell. Honorary mention should be given to five women who were considered like family and took care of both Connie and Roy until the very end: Jacquelyn Davis, Katie Minyard, Crystal Linarez, Tanya Christman, and Tammie Hall.

The funeral service was held at First United Methodist Church in Bonham on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 starting at 12pm with burial following at Arledge Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate in memory of Roy to the Wounded Warrior Project at woundedwarriorproject.org.

Pallbearers were Boyd Petrich, Scott Warnick, Chase Petrich, Will Petrich and Nathan Markiewicz.

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.

OBITUARIES

PAMELA ANNE BUTLER

Pamela Anne Butler, a beloved educator and founder of The Westwood School in Dallas, went to be with the Lord on June 15, 2024, at the age of 73.

Pam was born on June 25, 1950, in Bonham, Texas, and was the daughter of G.C. and Martha Butler. From childhood, she was an inquisitive explorer of nature and literature. She was outdoors as much as possible observing how things worked. That spirit of curiosity continued into her professional life where she observed the children she was teaching. Her goal was to find a better way of cultivating the child’s curiosity and making the child a life-long learner. This led her to the Montessori Method of teaching where observation of the child is an important component in educating the child.

In 1986, Pam founded The Westwood School, a place where her passion for teaching and her commitment to students could flourish. To facilitate her vision, she earned certifications from St. Nicola Training Center in London, England, and additional certifications from Contemporary Montessori Education. Over the years, she guided over 1600 students through their educational journey, leaving a profound and enduring legacy. Her influence extended beyond the classroom to the families of her students, where she was always available to listen to any issues parents had with their children. She was always quick to ensure that parents knew about the special moments that happened at school with their children. Many former students would return frequently to visit with her and express gratitude for the positive influence that she had on their lives. Pam’s vision of creating a school for students from toddler through High School led the school to adopt the prestigious International Baccalaureate program for the upper school years.

Pam is survived by her daughter, Heather Lourcey (Larry), her beloved grandchildren, Dean Lourcey and Beau Lourcey; her sister, Carolyn Gray (Alan); her brothers Charles Butler (Karen) and John Wood (Ann); her nieces, Caitlin Boothe (Barry) and Sandra Barnes(Steve); and her nephews, Brett Gray, Kyle Gray (Christina), Chase Butler (Ashley) and Craig Wood (Julie); great nephews, Brooks Boothe, Ford Boothe, Jack Butler, Truett Butler; and great niece, Elizabeth Butler. Her family and countless former students remember her not only as an exceptional educator but also as a cherished family member and friend.

Pam’s legacy of love, dedication and education will continue in the hearts and minds of all those she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. There will be a private family graveside service in Bonham. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Arboretum in Dallas on Sunday, August 4, 2024 at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Westwood School (westwoodschool.org) in her honor, continuing her mission of enriching the lives of future generations.

Report TAKE A KID FISHING or

Week of July 3, 2024

Bois d’Arc stained; 85 degrees; 0.05 feet above pool. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Bass are biting on main lake points in 3-5 feet on spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and flukes. Windy points are best with grass present. Just out and off shore a bit flukes and senkos are good around bushes with shade. A few brush piles are starting to produce fairly good in 10-12 feet. Not all brush piles have fish, so just keep checking them and you will find the one that does. Report by Marc Mitchell, Lake Fork Guide Service.

Cooper GOOD. Water stained; 83 degrees: 2.00 feet below pool. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Water is being released at the spillway. Anglers are reporting good catches. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 76 degrees; 3.23 feet above pool. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. The lake is still about 3 feet over pool and the gates are closed while areas downstream continue to be flooded. Crappie are scattered in 10-30 feet of water. Seeing more in 10-20 feet on timber and bush hitting minnows and jigs. Color does not matter, you just need to match the profile the fish are feeding on.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water slightly stained; 83 degrees; 4.08 feet above pool. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. White bass are schooling around the dam and random open water. Anything you can throw at them when fish are surfacing. Crappie should be stacked in brush piles 15-30 feet hitting minnows or the smallest jig you can stand to use. Channel catfish are great on punch bait in 15-25 feet.

Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 87 degrees; 0.20 feet above pool. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Lake Tawakoni continues the fish good as water temperatures rise to almost 87 degrees. We are experiencing a solid summer pattern which includes white bass and hybrid striper occasionally feeding on the surface on schools of shad. This pattern is not consistent but when found is extremely fun. Slabs and swimbaits are the ticket when this happens. There is a more consistent bite on white bass and hybrid stripers on humps and drop offs in 12-25 feet.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 2.44 feet above pool. Anticipate increased recreational boater traffic for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Striped bass fishing is good using topwaters at daylight near rocky banks and main lake points. Look for birds and surfacing fish. Catching a lot of fish on live shad on ledges and humps in 30-45 feet of water. Crappie fishing is slow using jigs on structure and brush piles in 15-20 feet of water. Fish near points and in ditches in the backs of coves. Catfishing is good using punch bait for channel catfish in 15-25 feet of water on rocky points.

Fourth Man In The Fire!

Yesterday, my morning devotional from Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Devotionals was about rejoicing. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” As believers, we have the capacity and the calling to rejoice even in the most difficult circumstance. As Spurgeon states, “…although trouble may surround them, they still sing; and, like many birds, they sing best in their cages!”

You may be in your own kind of “cage” this morning – whether it be a disease or some other kind of physical affliction, marital strife, or financial struggles –may your “heart rejoice in

Him.” (Psalm 33:21) When Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego found themselves in the fiery furnace, the Lord did not put the fire out, instead He became the “fourth man in the fire!” He just got right in there with them and protected them and got them through. The famous hymn writer said it this way, “Whatever

my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL!” May you find it in your heart to truly rejoice with us as we celebrate Our Risen Savior – regardless of whatever else may be going on in your life.

Yours for Broken Chains, Lyn and Lissa

Is Celebrate Recovery For Me?

Celebrate Recovery offers a person the opportunity to participate in a group where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives. Ask yourself:

• Are there things in my life that I do to hurt others?

• Is there something I wish I could live without?

• Is there something in my life that has gotten out of control?

• Do I have a habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

Sunday Morning Re-Wind “Faith Obeys the Word”

Hello everyone!

For most of us, hearing God’s Word is not a problem. The question is, are we applying it to our lives? Do we hear it and receive it, or do we hear it and disregard it to do what we want instead?

As we see in James 1:1927, there is a big difference between worldly living and living for the Lord. James also explains the way that we should be living for the Lord in our lives. The key to living out our faith is to not only hear the Word of God, but to humbly receive it, and use it to reshape our thinking so that we can apply it to our lives. If we hear God’s Word and disregard or ignore it, then we do not really hear it at all. God’s Word is not intended to entertain us, but to change us. It is not

just for our consumption, but also for our construction. The message in this passage is that if we truly put our faith in God, we shouldn’t settle for merely appearing religious. We must abandon trying to control the world with our words and our anger. We must humbly receive the Word that God has planted within us, listen to it, and obey what it says. We ought to control our words, care for those who are weak and suffering, and keep ourselves from being contaminated by the world around us.

A classic hymn that accompanies this passage was written by Frederick William Faber in 1849.

“Faith of our fathers! Living still In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword: O how our hearts

beat high with joy

Whene’er we hear that glorious Word!

Faith of our fathers! Holy faith! We will be true to thee till death!

Faith of our fathers! We will love Both friend and foe in all our strife: And preach thee, too, as love knows how, By kindly words and virtuous life.

Faith of our fathers! Holy faith! We will be true to thee till death!

If you’re looking to find a good church home, we invite you to come visit us and be part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Worshiping In Spirit And Truth

How important is worship?

Jesus said that, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth”(John 4:24). If we are going to worship God, then there is a way in which we MUST worship God.

We MUST worship God whole heartedly! David wrote, “I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works”(Psalms 9:1). God has always desired the whole heart of man. We must put our hearts into worship. The Lord declared the great commandment, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind”(Matt. 22:37). We MUST worship God in

the church. Christ said, “I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee”(Hebrews 2:12). We must not forsake the assembly of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). The church is the family of God (Ephesians 3:15).

We MUST worship God without fear. The son of Jesse wrote, “Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name”(Psalm 18:49). Christians cannot allow the world to define, dictate, or decide what worship consists of. The church, though persecuted, must follow God’s word in worship. We are told, “fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell”(Matt. 10:28). We MUST worship God ac-

cording to Truth! Our worship to God must be scriptural, and not traditions of men. Jesus speaks of a ‘vain worship’. It is the worship that God has not authorized, but is after the thoughts and commandments of men (Mark 7:7). We need the authority of the Lord in worship. Paul wrote, “whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him”(Col. 3:17). Truly, we are “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9). We should “speak” and worship “as the oracles of God” have declared (1 Peter 4:11). Let us “worship GOD in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24).

Barbed Wire in Fannin County

Around farms and ranches all over Fannin County, you can find barbed wire. The simple fencing is as common to see as the grass and the trees and yet it played a pivotal role in shaping the American frontier.

From 1867-1874 alone, there were over 200 hundred patents issued for different variations of barbed wire. Inventors were constantly trying to improve durability, reduce costs and adapt the wire to different environments. While Lucien B.

Smith is credited with creating a “thorny wire” in 1867, it was Joseph Glidden’s patented design in 1874 that ultimately became the barbed wire known today. What made Glidden’s wire different from previous versions was the barbs being locked into place, changing the overall efficiency of the wire. During this time, farms and ranches were also springing up all over Fannin County as more families began to settle in the area. This rapid growth brought the need to define property lines and keep livestock enclosed, thus causing a large need for barbed wire

in the area. Advertisements for various barbed wires were published in local newspapers, such as this advertisement from Ed Steger published in

the Bonham News from August 21, 1896. Since its initial creation, there have been over 800 unique patents issued for different styles of wire and an estimated 2,000 different styles of wire known to exist. Collecting the different styles of barbed wire has become a fascination for thousands of people, with many looking for rare, uncommon variations of the wire. Currently, there are about 240 different styles of barbed wire on display at the Fannin County Museum of History.

The collection includes common types, still found on fences in the county today, as well as rare versions that are no longer produced.

The Museum has also partnered with the new Duces Wild Western Wear store located at 113 W. Sam Rayburn Drive in Bonham, Texas to display a panel of barbed wire.
