Ridge members and employees have been given the opportunity to be extras in the movie. While the course is open, players might skip a hole and then play another hole twice. The players are understanding and excited to see first-hand the makings of a movie. This week, Legacy’s remodeled banquet room, which usually hosts special events is accommodating approximately 100 individuals for breakfast and lunch. The dressing rooms are being used by the wardrobe and hair & makeup departments. The space is perfect for their needs. As the metroplex moves north, the increase popularity of golf, and the excellent course conditions (Thank You to The Staff), Legacy Ridge has seen play on the course triple. Players new to the course enjoy the course design, excellent pace of play, Bentgrass greens and friendly staff. Call (903) 640-4800 for additional information.

This past Wednesday the 26th of July 2023, I had the privilege of getting together with three leaders of the grief recovery support group in Fannin County known as Grief Share. I visited with Carolyn Rogers, Debbie Farrar and George Cosper to discuss the soon start of the Fall meetings and go over a few changes within the program. I initially met Carolyn, Debbie and George in the Winter of 2022 for an article I wrote regarding the Grief Share classes that were starting in March of that year. For those just hearing about it, Grief Share is an international organization that has helped over a million people recover from the loss of a loved one by utilizing approximately 45 experts ranging from licensed psychologists, certified grief therapists, pastors, authors, professors, psychiatrists, theologians and trauma counselors to co-produce brief video seminars that are viewed during the two-hour Grief Share sessions. The videos cover grief and recovery topics with expert interviews using real life case studies and dramatic reenactments. After viewing the

videos, a group discussion is held regarding the contents of the video and those wishing to share what is going on in their life can do so. Participants are encouraged to take home the workbook and write their feelings regarding the topics discussed. Those feelings can be shared or not shared with the group according to the discretion of the participant. Carolyn stressed that there is absolutely no pressure exerted on anyone to share their thoughts. Carolyn, who suffered the

loss of her husband of fifty years several years ago, has the most experience with the organization and noted that the videos have recently been updated and are 30 minutes long (they had previously run about 45 minutes) and the workbooks were also updated & condensed (though there is still a daily devotion section with a place for personal thoughts to be written.) She noted two things are stressed for each participant with the first being to share briefly who

it is they lost in their life. And the second thing is a rule they ask all to adhere to, that whatever they hear coming from another in the group, it is not to be repeated outside of the group. She noted the importance of everyone feeling secure in knowing the thoughts they share will not become fodder for gossip. Debbie, who also suffered the loss of a husband, shared what an amazing difference can be

ADULTING 101 CLASSES

We tried this class before with no luck. We are going to try again after some expressed interest. These free classes are open to those still living at home, newly moved out, or needing a little more guidance in life. We are looking for professionals in their field to come in and teach the basics. Ex: changing a tire, creating a budget, applying for scholarships, filling out a job application or resume, your credit score, etc.

seen in those who attend Grief Share and at the start appear to be “closed” to when they finish and are able to talk and laugh again. She noted it is a misconception that Grief Share is just “a crying party” because though there may at times be tears shed, that is not all they do. As she finished making that distinction, Carolyn shared how the group gets together for reunions at local restaurants from time to time with

the most recent one being held at Luna Azul’s where 22 past participants got together for lunch (the next one she added will be at Gayle’s.)

the ground and hold him still. There's a way to sort of copy this progressive method of correction. Obviously, we're not going to do any barking or biting, but when your dog starts to do something you don't want him to do, instead of yelling his name (which incidentally, is a horrible idea), try simply going "ah ah ah". That's what I consider a "growl level" correction. If he doesn't respond appropriately or stop doing what he's doing, the next level would

be to get a little bit louder with something like "hey!". This is more akin to perhaps a lower level, bark. If that doesn't get the right response, or get him to stop whatever it is, the next level is to get loud. Something like "NO!". If Max doesn't respond anywhere in this range of verbal corrections, the next thing to do is to get your hand on him. I typically will grab a dog by his scruff. At the same time, I will repeat. "NO!". It's important you pay attention to his reaction, because most dogs will immediately stop what they're doing once you get ahold of them in this fashion. If this is what happens, you must let go immediately, and in a lower register of your voice, say something like "good boy", or "that's what I want". It's not big praise, but it is praise. Next time we will talk about where to go from here in the correction protocol.

Family-Fueled Football: 2023 gridiron season marks 10 years since Leonard's State semifinals run

Workouts for the 2023 high school football season in Texas commenced on July 31. Yearly, these equate a time of optimism. Thoughts of advancing deep into the State playoffs -- even playing into December -- abound. "We [as coaches] always think we might have that kind of year," said current Honey Grove head football coach Shane Fletcher. "You have to have luck and health." Ten years ago, during Fletcher's long stay at Leonard as head coach, the Tigers had both -- reaching the 2013 Class 2A Division II State semifinals. "They were bonded as brothers. They were the closest knit team I've ever coached," said Fletcher. "It's why we won those games that were close. "They did everything together: went out to eat, went to the movies," he said. "They didn't want to let their brothers down. "That group has always been special. Were they the most talented? Probably not." "To be honest, there wasn’t anything really special about us as players," said Cameron Adkins, a senior right guard on the team. "We didn’t have any Division I freak athletes. "As a team, however, we were special," said Adkins. "We worked harder than anyone, and we were a family. I had their backs and they had mine." "What I remember the

Tentative dates for the 2023 State football championships will be Dec. 13-16 -- within which time will mark 10 years since Leonard's historic season concluded on Dec. 14, 2013. Grief Share

She also shared how a visitor to church who had been standing close to their group and overheard their conversation one Sunday morning before services started, had said to the Associate Pastor that, “well I’m telling you, the happiest people in the church seem to be those Grief Share people.” After that memory brought laughter from the trio, George, who, like most men I know was pretty much allowing the ladies to cover the topics, was moved to add that “when you get so low, you got to go high.” Both ladies quickly agreed, noting sometimes you get so low, there’s nowhere else to go but up. With the program being scripture based, Carolyn shared that “your relationship with the Lord is the beginning of recovery.” Before concluding our interview, Carolyn noted the importance of letting people know that though the Boyd Baptist Church is hosting Grief Share, this program is not a Baptist thing, but a community thing. Grief Share is open to all denominations and non-Christians. It is however geared for adults. When asked whether Grief Share has resources available to children, it was noted that there is material available online for children and anyone seeking help in that area can contact www. griefshare.org for more information. The next Grief Share group in Fannin County will be meeting at Boyd Baptist Church located at 3707 N. State Hwy 78 in Bonham and is a 13-week program that lasts for 2 hours each week. There are two available schedules with a group meeting on Wednesdays, August 23 – November 15, 2023, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to accommodate those who prefer evening hours and on Thursdays, August 24 – November 16, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon for those who prefer daytime hours. The cost involved in signing up for this life enriching program is your time and the $20 price of the personal workbook. There will also be a special one-day, two-hour session on Sunday, August 13th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Boyd Baptist Church that will be titled “Loss of a Spouse” and not require a workbook. Those wishing to know more are encouraged to call the church at 903-583-7288 or go online at www.griefshare.org

vehicle sped into the lot and parked in a handicapped space. The driver then yelled an obscene greeting at the warden, who thought maybe the driver failed to recognize his uniform in the dark. The warden turned on his flashlight to ensure the driver saw his badge. Sitting in the passenger seat, the driver’s son commented on his mother’s regretful choice of greeting. The warden conducted sobriety tests and determined the driver, now belligerent, was intoxicated. The local police department arrived and transported them to a hospital, where the driver consented to a blood specimen. The test determined that along with her intoxication, she was also suffering from low blood sugar. Her sugar level was treated, and she was placed in jail for a DWI. Boat Over Troubled Water After a long period of heavy rainfall in Trinity County resulting in high water, swift currents and excessive debris, a Trinity County Game Warden received a call from dis-

patch regarding a boater who was sinking in a nearby river. The warden spoke with the distressed boater and advised him to put on a life jacket immediately. He then called the local fire department for backup. The boater dropped an accurate pin for his location, and the warden quickly found him hanging on the top bow of a vertically floating vessel, half submerged. The warden pulled up to the vessel, allowing the boater to jump in. The vessel then completely submerged. However, the warden successfully tied the boat’s bowline to a nearby tree stump, saving the vessel, which was later towed to a local boat ramp. Together, the warden and boater recovered an ice chest with fish and a couple of fishing poles. The boater explained that there were a lot of floating trees in the swift water. While he was fishing, a huge floating tree came over his motor, pushing the back of the vessel underwater. The boater was very appreciative and tired.

Citizens of Fannin County,

I am writing you today to make you aware of an important change affecting not only Precinct 1, but also the makeup of the county’s governing body as a whole. Since 2021, it has been my honor and privilege to serve you as County Commissioner of Precinct One. Though holding public office certainly comes with its own set of challenges, there is nothing more rewarding than service to our county. Recently, I have been offered an opportunity to serve in a different capacity and, after much deliberation, have chosen to hand over the responsibilities of my office to another person prior to the end of my term. The process of finding my successor is being managed by County Judge Newt Cunningham, and will take place over the next couple of weeks. Our county is at a pivotal moment in its history, and decisions made by our Commissioners today will have long lasting effects for generations to come. The pace of growth we are experiencing is unmatched in our history, and it is imperative we have strong, intelligent, businessminded leaders in place to guide us through this change. If you know of someone with these qualities, or are willing to serve in this role yourself, please make Judge Cunningham aware. When first elected, everyone pointed out the mountain of challenges that laid ahead in restoring Precinct 1 to an operationally efficient workcenter. Not only was nearly every piece of equipment dilapidated and unreliable, but accusations of staff being unmotivated to work were spread freely. Once elected, the only way to turn this ship around was to hold ourselves to the clear expectations expressed to me by the citizens. Equipment wise, I began auctioning many of

the unused steel hulks of broken equipment cluttering our maintenance yard. I then used this money, along with other sources, to invest in newer, more reliable machinery with which our crew could do their jobs. We now have two new haul trailers each with reliable trucks to tow them with. In January we purchased a new skid steer and a grapple attachment that has helped the crew work more efficiently. We also recently took possession of a new tractor with boom mower deck to trim overgrown trees impeding our roadways. Two of our previous road graders were having constant repairs, they were traded in for a newer, more reliable model allowing our crew to spend more of their time operating them instead of working on these back at the barn. This fiscal year alone, I was able to spend $309,380.94 on gravel ($193,947.83 budget, $115,433.11 ARPA funds) and $255,834.91 in oil sand ($76,187.00 budget, $179,647.91 ARPA funds) to address many of the repairs needed on the over 192 miles of county roads in Precinct 1. Offices displaced by the courthouse renovation had become scattered throughout the county with rentals costing the taxpayers over $120,000 annually. Through a land and commercial property purchase that was made, we will soon be consolidating many of these offices and courts into a centralized Justice Center. Our county leaders have a shared vision of our future, and are taking the necessary steps to get us there. Please stay engaged and remain supportive of whomever becomes our next Commissioner of Precinct One. Thank you again for allowing me that opportunity these past few years. Edwina Lane Fannin County Commissioner Precinct One

Loving of the Truth

By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

In one of Christ’s prayers to the Father, he states, “thy word is truth” (John 17:17). Paul educates us to know that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:1617). All of the Bible is truth and all of the Bible is from God. It is essential that those who desire to go to Heaven, love the truth. Paul warns about

being lost without the truth, “with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved” (2 Thessalonians 2:10). We cannot be saved without the truth. It is vital that we learn the truth. If we love the truth, then we will learn more truth. Paul said to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Paul reminded the Ephesians, that trusted in Christ, that their trust came “after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation” (Ephesians 1:13).

It is imperative that we speak the truth. We are to that we are to be “speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). Peter instructs that “If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God” (1 Peter 4:11). Thus, we must speak as the Bible speaks. Paul instructed Timothy, concerning the truth of God, that he “Preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2). John recorded these words of Jesus, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:31-32). We are told that love “Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:6).

Sunday Morning Re-take “Be Thou My Vision”

Hello everyone! The Bible tells us in Psalm 73:24-26, “Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.” As I’ve said before, the problem in our nation today is that we, as a nation, have lost our dependency upon the Lord. He is the only One we can depend on for help in solving the issues that we have today. A couple of weeks ago, I talked about how the possessed child in Mark chapter 9 was healed. After I wrote that article, I was looking back on it, and I had this thought. “How would it be if the Lord said to us, as a nation, what He said to

the people in verse 19?” “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you?” That would be a very scary thought, wouldn’t it? If we would only pray to the Lord, and seek His face, He will help us. He promised to never leave us, nor forsake us. What a wonderful promise! That being said, I am reminded of this classic hymn, that really ought to be the prayer of our nation today. “Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; be all else but naught to me, save that Thou art; be Thou my best thought in the day and the night,

both waking and sleeping, Thy presence my light.” “Be Thou my Wisdom, be Thou my true Word; be Thou ever with me, and I with Thee, Lord; be Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son; be Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.” If you are in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship services here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors our are honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday! Bro. Josh Stevenson

To begin our Tuesday Meeting, Alicia Whipple presided, and Doug Kopf offered the prayer, James Manis led the pledge, Carol Pillars picked a song for the group to sing. The membership shared Happy Dollars. Jessica McDonald introduced her guest speaker Rebecca Budjenska who told her remarkable story of personal redemption. Ms. Budjenska leads Alabaster Moms (CPS and Recovering Mom Community) in Greenville. “Mothers involved with CPS and recovering from addictions, abuse, and trauma NEED healthy community and relationships. Moms need other women who’ve been in

their shoes and have walked that road to help them rebuild. Alabaster moms are those friends; we are that community.” Moms who stay with this program may go from the bottom to the top. For more information, search your computer for Alabastermoms.org. Alabaster in this case does not represent a color but Alabaster, Alabama. If you know of a woman needing help that Alabaster Moms provides, please contact Rebecca Budjenska in Greenville, Texas, at 903-945-4248. Please remember to contact the Fannin County Family Crisis Center at 903-583-7000 if you have been abused or assaulted. relief in sight for the high temperatures in the coming days. Commissioner Kopf noted that with a full crew and all his equipment in working condition, his crew will be working to get caught up on the roads. Judge Cunningham thanked everyone for their attendance with special thanks to Attorney Martin for his assistance and Mr. Cook for his presentation. He noted his father had been one of the paratroopers who survived D-Day and voiced his appreciation for the sacrifice and service of all the veterans who have made freedom possible before wishing God’s blessing on all. 26. By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Museum of History The 21st in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham In 1890 the Fannin County Commissioner’s Court gave permission to J. N. Hughes to string telephone wire throughout the county. Soon many communities had telephone systems. In the decades that followed these systems were connected. Advertisements which mentioned telephone numbers were in the Bonham Daily Favorite as early as 1894. It appears that the first business to advertise a telephone service was that of the undertaker. By 1900 telephone

service was in full operation in Bonham. The North Texas Telephone Company had offices on the 2nd floor of the Brownlee Building on the north side of the Square. The Museum has a Bonham telephone directory for 1907 which shows 328 business and residential telephone numbers. By then, the telephone business had been sold and was renamed Texas Telephone Company. The telephones of the 1920s in Bonham were the standing black telephones with the receiver on the side. This is an example from the Museum, but those in use in Bonham would not have had a dial feature. During World War II telephone service was restricted because of the war effort. “Telephone materials are also war materials, and winning the war is now by far the most important thing. The telephone service in any community is now limited to the present facilities except for defense purposes. The furnishing of party line service is the only way that telephone companies can serve more people.” Bonham Herald, 11-19-1942 Dial telephones came to Bonham in 1955. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the new $65,000 building of Texas Telephone Company,

which would house the automatic equipment for Bonham’s dial telephone system, were held on August 17, 1955. It was noted that the new dial system would eliminate the practice of chatting with the telephone operator about where the fire alarm came in from and about the weather. Temporarily long distance calls still went through an operator. In December 1955 the Bonham Daily Favorite ran a series of articles on seven telephone company workers who had served the company for more than 25 years, including operators and a lineman. Several had worked for the telephone company since the 1920s. Telephone operators were wellknown and respected members of the community. The dial phone is one of the most popular items at the Fannin County Museum of History. Children love to pick up this phone and dial. The Museum is also so proud of the switchboard. It is amazing how many visitors to the Museum knew someone who was a telephone operator. And kids enjoy hearing about “party lines.” Bring your kids to the Museum and give them a lesson on the history of the telephone.
