Imminent Danger Describes Condition of Fannin County Courthouse

Press Release From Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham - State inspectors from the Texas Department of License and Regulation, have advised County Officials

that the Fannin County Courthouse creates an Imminent Danger. Solutions offered and considered included (1) vacating the building, or (2) maintaining a fire watch while the

building is occupied, until the problems are corrected. A fire watch has been implemented; use of the Courthouse may be impacted. State inspectors, on August 10, inspected con-

struction issues at the County’s request.

An investigation is underway to determine ultimate responsibility for the faulty construction work. Multiple

parties were involved including the architects, engineers and contractors. We can and will do better in the future. Public safety is our primary concern.

National Senior Citizens Day August 21, 2023

National Senior Citizens Day recognizes senior who have spent their lives contributing to society and have impacted everyone's lives for the better. Improved healthcare has changed demographics and increased productivity of older citizens, allowing them to be more active than ever before. With more opportunities available as well, many senior citizens now begin second careers and are an example for younger generations. The country's foundation and stable sectors are the result of the hard work of our senior citizens and they deserve all our gratitude.

President Ronald Reagan took the initiative to honor seniors in 1988 when he signed Proclamation 5847 and marked August 21 as the day seniors will be celebrated. "Thoughout our history, older people have achieved much for our families, our communities, and our country. That remains true today, and gives us ample reason this year to reserve a special day in honor of the senior citizens who mean so much to our land, " Reagan proclaimed. "For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older - places in which older people can participate to the fullest and can find the encouragement, acceptance, assistance, and services they need to continue to lead lives of independence and dignity."

Feed the Needy in Fannin County

Take food to shut-ins, disadvantaged and disabled once weekly or more for Meals on Wheels. Volunteer: call 903-583-8573 between 7 and 11 M-F - If a brother or sister is without … enough food for each day, and … you say to them, “Go in peace … and feed yourself,” but you do not give them the necessities for the body, what good does that do?

This recipe is a family favorite, served warm as dessert, plain or with a scoop of ice cream. But the lemon sauce topping makes this traditional dessert a little different, enhancing the flavor of the blueberries.

BLUEBERRY BUCKLE WITH LEMON SAUCE

2 c. all-purpose flour

⅓ c. sugar

1 large egg, room temperature

½ c. milk

½ c. butter, melted

2 c. fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed

Topping:

½ c. sugar

⅓ c. all-purpose flour

½ tsp. ground cinnamon

¼ c. cold butter, cubed

Lemon Sauce:

⅓ c. sugar

1 Tbsp. cornstarch

1 tsp. grated lemon zest

1 c. water

1 Tbsp. butter

1 Tbsp. lemon juice

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a small bowl, whisk the egg, milk and butter; add to dry ingredients just until moistened. Spread into a greased 8" square baking dish. Top with blueberries. For topping, in a small bowl, combine the sugar, flour and cinnamon; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over blueberries. Bake at 350° for 45-55 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and lemon zest; gradually stir in water until smooth. Bring to a boil over low heat, stirring constantly. Cook and stir 1 minute longer or until thickened. Remove from the heat; stir in butter and lemon juice. Serve warm sauce with buckle.

ENJOY!!!

1948 Faculty

The 20th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham

The first school in Bonham for negro students was called the Bonham Colored School and is believed to have been built in the late 1800s. Official notice of the colored school is in the Bonham News, August 27, 1897. It was located on North Franklin Street. After that building burned, a new three room school was built on East 7th and Katy Blvd. The school went to the 9th grade. By 1920 the school offered 11 grades and expanded to 12 grades in 1940.

In 1928 a new brick building, funded in part by the Rosenwald Foundation, was built on Katy Blvd., which was called Washington Elementary School and High School. It had seven class rooms, two of which could be converted into an auditorium.

In the mid-1940s two frame portable buildings were add ed. In 1946 an airplane han gar was moved to the campus from Jones Field for a gym-

nasium, and in 1947 another frame building was added.

Only two school annuals have been found, although the Museum has a number of graduation announcements. The earliest school annual was in 1948 and the second was in 1963.

The last graduating class was in 1966. A Texas Historical Marker is at the former site of the school.

The school was the focal point for the black community. An annual picnic was held for many years on the grounds. Students were encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports.

Administrators and teachers were respected members of the black community.

Over the years a number of school reunions have been held. On July 7 & 8 of this year a reunion was held in Bonham. There was a great turnout. The earliest class represented was that of 1949, represented by Vera Ross. Many other classes were represented, and children and grandchildren of graduates also attended. This photo shows the graduates attending.

6. Discussion, consideration and action regarding implementing a Burn Ban in Fannin County – County Judge: Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy

Hudson spoke on the burn bans in effect across neighboring counties and how Fannin County was rapidly reaching the Burn Index number that necessitated a burn ban to be implemented. Commissioner Magness seconded the motion which passed.

9. Discussion, consideration and action to approve Imposition of Optional Fees for calendar year 2024 – County Judge for Tax Assessor/ Collector: Fannin County Tax Assessor/Collector Gail Young advised the court the two optional fees that could

Correction Protocol

Pampered Paws Dog Hotel 10/4/22

We've been talking about how to correct your dog in his language. Dogs always use a progressive form of correction. The way we can emulate the way dogs do this, is by using the least amount of correction that might work, and then being willing to take it to the next level. - If you tell your dog "no" and he doesn't listen to you, we have to get a little more intense. As I mentioned last time, we do this by adding volume. If your dog is barking his head off, and you tell him "stop it" and he keeps barking, tell him "no!". If he still doesn't stop, you need to get up and go to him. As you approach him, continue to admonish him. At any point during your approach, if he stops barking, stop admonishing and

say "good boy!". Then call him to come to you. When he gets to you, give him affection.

Last time I mentioned if he doesn't stop at this juncture, you have to get your hand on his scruff. This is tantamount to a "bite" in his world. Most dogs will stop at this point if you 'scruff them up', but if he doesn't, the next step is to push him over onto his side and hold him there until he gets still. This is exactly what his mama would do in this scenario. Obviously, this part is more of a challenge, and some dogs might not go down willingly. Additionally, if you're going to push your dog over and hold him down, you have to be careful not to get bitten!

Ultimately, you are demonstrating to your dog that you are going to get your way. The flipside of that however, is that, as soon as you do, you must at the very least, praise him.

July news from Oakwood Cemetery

Press Release - July was another hard month for Oakwood Cemetery. An unexpected storm on Sunday morning, July 16th, left two more huge trees uprooted. Other trees were left damaged, with many broken and dangling limbs. Large and small limbs were blown throughout the cemetery. Along with the strong winds, two and a half inches of rain fell in only an hour, leading to deep ruts cut into the roads, headstones overturned, and flowers strewn everywhere. This resulted in yet another cost of $15,000.00 to get these trees and large branches

cleaned up. The cemetery entrances had to be closed to keep anyone from getting hurt, as limbs were still falling, and some of the roads inside the cemetery were blocked by the debris. While the loss of any of our trees is devastating, small miracles were evident—notice the untouched tombstone left standing in the fork of this large tree. Progress is being made for the future of Oakwood, however, as the new road in the Smith Addition was finished in July.

July Memorials: Marie Sheffield Wallace, James Wilkins, Betsy Baker, Jean Shelton Felts, Mutt and June Milford

If you own a space or have family and friends buried at Oakwood, donations are needed to keep our thirty acres well maintained and beautiful. Please send donations to Oakwood Cemetery, P.O. Box 96, Honey Grove, TX 75446.

As of press time these fur babies were available for adoption. Please call for Availability! And hurry!!

Cesli Crum, Bonham HS Senior

BHS Choir Senior

Cesli Crum just returned from 2 weeks in Australia singing with the WorldStrides Honors Performance Series. Cesli auditioned last year and was one of the select few chosen out of thousands to participate in this honor under Grammy awardwinning conductor, Jeffery Redding.

In order to attend, Cesli had to begin studying college-level repertoire in May and work daily through the summer to perfect challenging choral music. The repertoire took commitment to countless hours of preparation and voice lessons with her Choir Director, Ms. Waller at the

469-223-3825

high school.

While in Sydney, Australia, Cesli was blessed to experience singing in the Sydney Opera House, as well as performing with other students from around the world and sight seeing with her group of performers. It was an experience of a lifetime. We would like to thank all those who donated to help her have this amazing experience. Without them, it would not have been possible. She will now begin preparing with her choir director, Ms. Waller to perform at NYC’s Carnegie Hall in February 2024.

Saturday, August 26th

Press Release - Make plans to visit Bonham, TX on Saturday, August 26th for the 55th Annual Bug Tussle Trek. The Antique Automobile Association Texas Region will once again be routing their way through Bonham, TX. This year the group will be making a pit stop at the Fannin County Courthouse from 11:00am to 1:30pm. AACA Texas Region Members will park & have an opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the restored 1888 Fannin County Courthouse, enjoy lunch at a variety of our restaurants and shopping in our

historic downtown. The Bonham Visitor Center is thrilled to welcome the group with complimentary Bonham 175th Anniversary themed desserts and public restroom facilities. Visit Bonham, TX and snap some shots of beautiful antique automobiles that will be cruising in to enjoy our hospitality. Why is the route called the “Bug Tussle Trek”? According to several AACA- Texas Region members the Trek started after a conversation among members to take one last car tour for the summer. They opened up a copy of the

Farmer’s Almanac and chose the hottest day of the year which happened to be the last Saturday in August that year. The group stopped at a once thriving general store in Bug Tussle, TX to get something cold to drink. Ever since, the Trek has taken place the last Saturday in August. This summer, the groundwork is being laid (quite literally) for both the pump station and pipelines to move water from the lake to Upper Trinity’s treatment plant.

In June, contractors began drilling piers and placing a mud slab in the pump room at the pump station, which will provide a stable platform for its foundation. The station is on schedule for completion in 2025. Staking and clearing of Upper Trin-

ity’s right-of-way (see the pipeline route here) for the 32 mile pipeline has begun. This work is preparing the way for

tunneling and pipeline installation. The contractors will begin laying pipe in the coming months.

account for our project with a Fannin County family, they suffered significant losses when Integrity Custom closed its operations in August of 2021. Their funds had been placed into a general operating account and were used to pay their construction expenses as well as other projects and general company expenses not specific to their project.

As a result, when Integrity Custom closed, it was not able to refund the unused construction funds or honor the payable vendor expenses. This caused significant losses; months of construction delays and emotional duress all of which was completely avoidable. No one plans to fail; however as the owner of Integrity Custom for over 24 years, when the unexpected happens it is the business owner’s responsibility to protect its customers.

I implore all builders, subcontractors, construction material suppliers, construction lenders, title companies, and landowners preparing to build to PLEASE read this article in full. Some act maliciously and others act in ignorance but regardless of the reason, not following construction trust law can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in delays and devastating financial losses. Further, not following construction trust laws is punishable with criminal felony charges carrying a possible prison sentence. If you are preparing to build or in one of the aforementioned businesses you must insist on proper constructions and trust accounts that are being properly used. This is NOT the law in most other states but it is the law in Texas.

I would love the opportunity to speak personally to anyone in the residential construction industry or landowners preparing to build and share my story and the requirements of the law. I will meet one on one or with an office or staff to share my story and teach and train how to fully comply with the Texas Property Code so you can protect your family, business, staff and or customers. Please email me at TPC162.032@gmail.com

Read Below

The Texas Construction Trust Fund Act encompasses regulations for fund allocation in construction projects, outlining penalties for violations. This legislation designates specific payments as trust funds, appointing beneficiaries and trustees with fiduciary responsibilities. A trustee can be a contractor, subcontractor, or owner involved in managing the trust funds.

Here is the Texas Property Code - PROP § 162.032. and its Penalties Current as of April 14, 2021

(a) A trustee who misapplies trust funds amounting to $500 or more in violation of this chapter commits a Class A misdemeanor.

(b) A trustee who misapplies trust funds amounting to $500 or more in violation of this chapter, with intent to defraud, commits a felony of the third degree.

(c) A trustee who fails to establish or maintain a construction account in violation of Section 162.006 or fails to establish or maintain an account record for the construction account in violation of Section 162.007 commits a Class A misdemeanor.

To comply, a "construction account" is necessary for residential projects exceeding $5,000. This account must be in a financial institution, labeled as a "construction account" on statements, and solely hold trust funds. The contractor must maintain a detailed account record with source details, deposit and disbursement dates, recipients, and the current balance.

For project-related expenses, a project account record should itemize direct and indirect costs charged to the owner, retain invoices, and connect documents to the account. Breaches of these duties can result in criminal penalties ranging from Class A Misdemeanor to Third Degree Felony, with fines and potential jail time.

Notably, the Act enforces personal liability, holding individuals responsible for trust fund mismanagement even if part of a corporation or LLC. To avoid penalties, it's crucial to maintain accurate accounting, direct funds appropriately, and prioritize compliance with the Act's stipulations. Please reach out for more information and training on TPC 162.

What is the matter with the Sherman School Board?

They were offered 11.7 acres of free land for a new elementary school by the developer of a very large subdivision and they turned it down! That is pure insanity.

As a former city planning director with experience in rapidly growing cities, I can tell you that getting large subdivision developers to set aside sites for new schools is a subdivision requirement in most of the better-managed cities that I have worked for. Single-family suburban

Ronny Hill speaks to Kiwanis

Guest speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Bonham, Texas, was Ronny Hill, superintendent of Bonham Parks and Recreation Department. Hill opened by saying, “There is no way to make cutting grass sound interesting.” Yet, he managed to give a very interesting talk. Hill spent thirty years in education and retired from Bonham ISD in 2012. He became parks superintendent for the City of Bonham in January 2013. He has no plans to retire anytime soon.

Hill highly complimented his full-time employees: Gary Roundtree, Nickey Fox, and John Thomas, along with parttime employees Dempsey Stewart, Lanny Milton, and Rick Ellis. These employees mow (depending on city-wide events and mechanical issues and weather) about 440 acres a week. There are five sets of restrooms they maintain and clean; fifty-eight trash cans to empty on a regular basis; clean the Roy V. Floyd Community Center; mow islands around town; put up Christmas lights; maintain City Hall, Public Library; police station; Fort Inglish; visitors center; fire training area; and gun range. In short, they are the people who help keep Bonham looking good all the time. In addition to all of this, they maintain their own mowers and other equipment.

If you want to reserve a city facility, call 903-583-7555; report park maintenance concerns, email Ronny Hill at rhill@cityofbonham.org; or report suspicious activity, call 903-583-2141.

homes have an average of 1.5 children per household, which means a 500-lot subdivision will add approximately 750 new children to the school system. The average size of an elementary school is around 400-600 students. Therefore, every new subdivision with 300 or more lots should be required to set aside acreage for a new school—unless you would rather have the school district go compete with well-heeled developers and have to purchase acreage for every new school at the current market rate—which

means the taxpayers have to cough up the money for that. I cannot believe the SISD let this one knowingly slip through their hands. With all of the growth this area is experiencing, it's time for the school boards and the cities in Grayson and Fannin counties to use modern growth management tools and up-to-date planning skills. Otherwise, we are all going to be subsidizing these new developments with our tax dollars.

The Thankful Life

Paul penned these words, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). God desires us to be thankful.

We find in the Bible, that being thankful is a declaration.

The psalmist wrote, “And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing” (Psalms 107:22). Being thankful to God declares our faith in Him.

The New Testament plainly teaches that “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews

11:6).

We should be thankful to God for Christ. To the Christians in Corinth, Paul sent this message, “But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57). John recorded the words of Christ, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). The scripture declares that Jesus is “the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him” (Hebrews 5:9). We must be thankful for the promise of inheritance. Paul stated that Christians should be “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light”

(Colossians 1:12). This is the very reason that the gospel is preached. The Lord told Paul to preach, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me” (Acts 26:18).

To members of the church, Paul wrote, “let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful” (Colossians 3:15). The one body is the one church (Colossians 1:18).

Christians, we have all the reasons to be thankful. We must be “abounding therein with thanksgiving” (Colossians 2:7).

Sunday Morning Re-take “It Pays to Pray”

Hello everyone!

The Bible tells us in James 5:16, “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

“Have you ever prayed for something big or small? How long did you have to wait, or did the answer ever come at all? Words are mere expressions of thought, nothing more, but believing is what really counts, because faith unlocks the door.” This recitation is paired with an old gospel song that says, “Prayer is the key to Heaven, but faith

unlocks the door.” Again I am reminded of the promise that is given to us in 2 Chronicles 7:14. We desperately need revival in our nation today, and clinging to that promise is the only way that we can experience true revival as a nation.

I feel led to go in a slightly different direction this week. As I was thinking and praying about what to write for this, a song that I haven’t heard in quite some time popped in my head. This song was written by Rodney Griffin, and recorded by Greater Vision in 2008, and I love the message in this song.

“It pays to pray

It pays to call upon His name It pays to pray

To see a miracle displayed You’ll forget the word “impossible” When you seek the Savior’s face You’ll know He will make a way It pays to pray.”

If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Romans 12:18

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself.

By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday

Anger makes some people stupid

Our parents taught school to American kids in Germany after World War II.

My brother and I lived in a dorm. The lights were turned off at 10pm with no warning.

Many years later, my wife Belle, was taking a college course to get her Master's degree. It was scheduled 6pm to 9pm. I drove because of her poor night vision. It took an hour and a half to where I dropped her off and then I'd visit my brother who lived two blocks away. I worked a midnight shift and got off work at 7am. I got most of my sleep in the morning, but a 3 minute nap before going to work made me feel fresh.

Everything was fine until the teacher started keeping

NOTICE TO CREDITORS

them til 9:30 which cancelled my nap. I told Belle, "Tonight I'm going to tell the teacher I understand the this class is over at nine. I need to get my wife and go home."

"You're not going to do that!" She was right because the doors were locked until the students came out at nine-thirty. The class was on the second floor. Belle and I passed on the stairway without speaking.

I explained to the teacher about missing my nap. I didn't say anything bad, but I talked with my teeth clenched.

He said, "From now on, I'll dismiss the class at nine." Looking back at him, I opened the door and said, "I sure would appreciate it!" (It was 10 o'clock.) The lights went off when I slammed the door!

I thought this dumb school is like the one in Germany. I

banged my nose on a wall. I didn't remember the hall being so narrow. I felt my way along the wall to find the stairwas, but a wall stopped me. I thought I'd gone the wrong direction and went back the other way thinking if I fall down the stairs, I'm going to sue the school. I hit another wall and realized I was in a large closet.

Along with information taken from the Honey Grove Preservation League Collection, thanks is also expressed to the following for their willingness to loan historical items for the exhibit: Honey Grove Masonic Lodge, Glenn Lee, Freida Moreland, Brian Owen, Walcott Black, and Brandon Caffee.

The exhibit is dedicated to those early pioneers who settled in and around the city and strived to make it a community that valued education, religion and culture. As well as present individuals, this exhibit honors past individuals who valued our history and worked to preserve it. Thank you.

Claude Caffee, Mayor

Press Release - The 20232024 4-H year officially kicks off September 1st, with early enrollment beginning August 15th. Fannin County 4-H of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is excited to welcome new and returning members to another year of 4-H programming and opportunity.

4-H is a club for youth ages 8 to 18 in grades 3rd through 12th. All youth can join 4-H for $25 each and will select one or many projects to participate in from the categories of agriculture and livestock, family and community health, leadership and citizenship, natural resources, and STEM. Community service, leadership, and scholarship opportunities are also included in the offerings of this program that reaches more than 550,000 youth in Texas each year.

“The start of the new 4-H year is such an exciting time in our program,” Texas 4-H Youth Development Program

director Dr. Montza Williams said. “We hope to see members take advantage of every opportunity that 4-H has to offer this year, and we hope to see new members begin their journey in this life-changing program.”

Not only do youth gain knowledge in the topic area of their choice, but life skills like communication, teamwork, citizenship, giving back, and working hard are obtained along every step of the way.

“According to past members, one of the most common 4-H benefits is friendship,” Dr. Williams said. “Friendship in your county, your district, your state, and even your nation.

4-H is rich in the opportunity to make friends who are interested in the same things you are.”

The new 4-H year is not only exciting for members, but for 4-H volunteers as well. The Texas 4-H program thrives on adult volunteers, with more than 30,000 registered and background-check-approved

volunteers, annually.

“The volunteers are what make this program accessible to all youth,” Dr. Williams said. “We are incredibly thankful for the work our volunteers do across the state and encourage adults that have a skill to share to reach out to their County Extension Office about becoming a 4-H volunteer.”

The Fannin County AgriLife Extension Office can be located at 2505 N Center St. Bonham, TX 75418 or by phone at 903-583-7453. More information about 4-H enrollment or events can be found at texas4h.tamu.edu.

Bonham’s Cemeteries

The 23rd in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham

This article discusses the cemeteries in Bonham which have provided a final resting

place for its citizens.

Inglish Cemetery

The town’s oldest cemetery is on property donated by Bailey Inglish. Pioneers buried there include the Daugherty’s, victims of an 1838 Indian massacre, Bailey Inglish (1783-1867), Daniel Rowlett (1786-1848) and Texas Revolution veteran James Tarleton (1789-1861).

Judge J. P. Simpson in his A History of Fannin County states that the Daugherty’s were the second burials in the cemetery. One outstanding monument at the cemetery is that of Bailey Inglish, the back of which shows Fort Inglish and a pioneer wagon. Our records and research identify 559 burials at this cemetery, of which 426 individuals have markers. There are undoubtedly more without markers or records. This cemetery is now managed by the City of Bonham. No new plots are sold, but families which already have plots can use them.

Recently City of Bonham departments, organized by Mark Posey, did significant cleanup work at the cemetery.

Pace Cemetery

The Pace Cemetery was located east of the Texas & Pacific Railroad Depot. It is not known when burials began there, but an 1869 newspaper article announces a cleanup day for the cemetery.

An article in the Honey Grove Signal in 1895 said: Perhaps everybody don't know that Fannin County owns the old cemetery near the depot, where for over a quarter of a century, Bonham laid her dead to rest. In early days it was a quiet, beautiful place - covered with a beautiful grove of trees. But time rolled on, the railroad came, and almost encroached on a part of the sacred ground.

The city began to improve, houses spring up all around in the vicinity, and as burials

continued there, the city council was appealed to by the citizens, asking them to stop burying there, as it had become a nuisance and was detrimental to the health of the living.

The city council passed an ordinance forbidding any more burials there, consequently Willow Wild sprang into existence, and many of the old settlers' remains were disentombed and moved from the old cemetery near the depot to Willow Wild.”

In 1902 the Bonham News reported that during grading work on First Street the bones of 34 persons were found and removed, with no way to identify the individuals.

In 1930 the former cemetery was “cleaned off” and made into a park. This photo is the only one that has been found so far.

County offices now occupy the location of the former Pace Cemetery.

Willow Wild Willow Wild was established in 1878. It stretches across 90 acres. Maintenance and operations are provided by the Willow Wild Cemetery Association, Inc. Willow Wild relies on donations and community

volunteers for care and maintenance.

Sam Rayburn is the most famous historical figure to be buried at Willow Wild.

Our records and research identify over 10,100 burials at this cemetery, of which 8,243 individuals have markers. There are undoubtedly more without markers or records.

Jewish Cemetery (Rosenbaum Cemetery)

In 1884 one acre was purchased by M. Rosenbaum, president of the Hebrew Benevolent Society of Bonham, for the burial of Jewish residents. This cemetery is now a part of Willow Wild with burials between 1881 – 1925.

Our records and research identify 11 burials of which 10 have markers.

Gates Hill Cemetery

Gates Hill Cemetery is the main African American cemetery for Bonham. It is located at the south end of town on Highway 78 south. It is unknown how early this cemetery was used but most likely from the 1850s.

Our records and research identify 1216 burials of which 386 have markers. There are undoubtedly more without markers or records.

Bonham citizens are buried in many of the other over 175 cemeteries in the County. The Russell Family Cemetery is now located in Bonham, but was once a rural family cemetery. It has 28 burials and 21 stones.
