Making Lake Fannin Beautiful

By Sandy Hood

Lake Fannin has some amazing updates going on! The first very noticeable improvement is the road coming into Lake Fannin. There is not even one small pot hole in that road. N-Tex Sand & Gravel donated gravel and helped in the process of improving the road. Precinct 1’s road crew also helped with the road. The entrance is now beaming a new bright yellow Lake Fannin sign. The next major improvement you will

come across is the clearing of trees and brush on the dry side of the dam. It was fascinating to observe the equipment tear down trees and brush like it was nothing. North Texas Land and Construction is working on clearing the land around the dam. Lake Fannin Volunteer group is paying for this project, and anticipate having both sides of the dam cleared by the end of August, weather permitting. Drive a little further and you come to the Lodge nestled in trees with a peaceful view. The

lodge is available for rental; weddings, family gatherings or other events. As you continue driving around Lake Fannin there are historic cabins and a beautiful 45 acre lake. Lake Fannin Volunteers have been busy and work every Saturday to make Lake Fannin the very best it can be. If you would like to help with making Lake Fannin beautiful, contact Anna at anna_09_08@yahoo.com. If you are interested in renting the lodge, please call 903-227-4722.

From my LiFe to yours: 5/2/17 Tour of Combat Missions

By Bro. Bill Beasley Having flown across the North Atlantic Ocean on May 31st, we were now in position to begin flying our tour of combat duty using Hethel, England as our beginning base. My crew and I were assigned to the 389th Bomb Group, a part of the 2nd Bomb Division, which was to become aligned with the 8th Air

Force. Our tour was to be comprised off 25 bombing missions at various targets in Europe. We flew our first mission to St. Lo in support of the newly established beach heads in Normandy. Of interest to all of us, Col. Jimmy Stewart of Hollywood memories, was our wing commander. On Sept 5th, 1944, we were a lead crew on the bombing of Karlsruhe, Germany. It was our 17th mission but as destiny would have it, it became our last mission. Our plane was disabled by antiair-craft fire and we had to abandon the plane. It crashed in Alsace. Four members of the crew were killed and seven of

us parachuted to safety. The remainder of our active combat was spent as captives at Stalag Luft 1 in Oberousel, Germany. The days Sept 5-8th, 1944 will always be remembered as days of answered prayer. We were recipients of harsh treatment, beatings, death threats, tortures and fear of death that loomed on the horizon constantly, but God heard our prayers. He delivered peace and life preservation for those of us forced to march under enemy abuse. It was prayer time, Officers and enlisted men prayed audibly. He heard our prayers. He still hears prayer today.

North Texas Giving Day is Back in Fannin County!

Press Release - North Texas Giving Day is set for September 19, 2019. This year marks the 11th year of this community wide fundraising event hosted by Communities Foundation of Texas. It is the second year for the event to include Fannin County and a few other counties surrounding Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. In all, nearly 2,700 nonprofits participated in North Texas Giving Day in 2018. A grand total of more than $48 million was raised, which was $9 million more than the previous year. In Fannin County alone, 144 donations to 9 organizations totaled up to $24,414. More than 2,400 nonprofits have already signed up to participate in North Texas Giving Day 2019, including ten nonprofits in Fannin County. August 19 is the deadline for nonprofits to register for this year’s event. Organizations who have registered and serve Fannin County include: Bonham Education Foundation, Bonham High School Band Boosters, Bonham Mosaic Church of the Assemblies of God, Fannin County Children’s Center, Fannin County Community Ministries, Fannin County Family Crisis Center, Fannin Health Clinic, Kool Lunches Program, Morning Star Academy and Northeast Texas Trail Coalition. On September 19, community members can go to www.northtexasgivingday. org and make donations to all of their favorite charities in one place. Gifts will support local causes and help build a stronger

Fannin County Family Crisis Center

and more vibrant community. Contributions will also give the participating nonprofits the chances to win prizes and earn bonus funds. Some nonprofits have also secured 1:1 matching funds to make donations stretch even farther. Community members can also choose to be an ambassador for their favorite local nonprofit by signing up for their own FUNdraising page and asking their friends and family to join them in giving. North Texas Giving Day provides an opportunity for everyone to be a philanthropist. Every gift, no matter what size matters. When many people give together, the impact is even greater. North Texas Giving Day is powered by Communities Foundation of Texas, a 65-yearold community foundation that has presented North Texas

Giving Day since 2009. The foundation professionally manages more than 1,000 charitable funds for families, companies, foundations and nonprofits and has awarded more than $1.8 billion in grants since its founding in 1953. North Texas Giving Day is a community-wide celebration and an event that lifts up giving by engaging the entire community to support local nonprofits, celebrating their important role in strengthening the region. It is also an efficient way for charitable organizations to raise funding for critical services to support North Texans. For more about North Texas Giving Day and the ten participating nonprofits in Fannin County, go to www. northtexasgivingday.org.

1 Establish Quorum - The regular Commissioners Court was called to order by Judge Moore on Tuesday, August 13, 2019. A quorum was established as all commissioners and the judge were present. 2 Invocation – Invocation was given by Pastor Nathan Clinkscales of the First Baptist Church of Trenton. 3 Pledges – Pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags were led by Judge Moore. 4 Introductions – There were no introductions. 5 Public Forum: 1) Thoa Allen – Made the following comments about the courthouse Construction Managers: • Turner Construction was handpicked by the last administration and forced on the new administration. There is no excuse to allow Turner an open checkbook with the taxpayers picking up the tab. We have choices. Other construction firms will come to Fannin County for work. I would like to see this put back on the agenda for a re-vote, to start over with more options of Construction Managers that can do the job for $17 million. • Turner Construction is being paid $1.3 million as consultants with no responsibility and no liability. They are not on the hook, and yet their words are like gold? They are final and true? • Has this firm produced a paper trail, a preliminary budget and a breakdown of the project? Why not show it on paper if they are that experienced? We should want to know Turner’s breakdown of the bid of $26.9 million. Are there checks and balances with the county? • If we do business like this, bankruptcy usually follows. We cannot go back and change the beginning, but we sure can start where we are at and change the ending. 2) Gabe Parker gave an update on Lake Fannin and stated that about 3 months ago they defined 3 projects they would work on: • The road – Commissioner Whitlock and N-Tex Sand and Gravel have done a fantastic job! The main road coming in across the dam has been regraded. There has been a lot of gravel donated by N-Tex Sand and Gravel and we are in great shape. We still have the back access to do but we are over 50% done with the road work. • Removal of foliage and brush from around the buildings – brush has been removed from around the caretaker’s cabin and the lodge. We are now working around the cabin area. • Cleaning the dam – there is a tremendous amount of growth; trees and brush on the

dam. That is very important to get resolved. Brandon Griffith has given us a great bid and the Lake Fannin Group is paying for it. He has about 20% of it done. In about a week, the dry side of the dam will be cleared. He is going to help out on the wet side of the dam along with some additional people that have shedders and such to get that resolved. By the end of the month, weather permitting, the dam will be complete. There will be work days every Saturday from now on until we get this work completed. 6 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve and sign the amended Rules of Procedure, Conduct and Decorum at Meetings of the County Commissioners Court, to be effective September 1, 2019 in accordance with House Bill 2840. – County Judge - The new rules will be available outside Commissioners Court starting September 1, 2019. Commissioner Whitlock made a motion to approve. Commissioner Self seconded. Motion carried. 7 Discussion, Consideration and Action to obtain LexisNexis Software for Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 for $91.00/month – County Judge for Purchasing Agent – Michelle Case and Judge Clemons explained that there are a lot of warrants that possibly could be resolved if the judge had this tool to use. If 50% of the warrants are collected on, that would bring in at least $150,000. Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve. Commissioner Self seconded. Motion carried. 8 Discussion, Consideration and Action to approve the proposed lease for office space at the Wire & Plastics Building, 800 East 2nd Street occupied by the District Attorney and County Clerk and have County Judge sign on behalf of the County - County Judge for County Purchasing Agent – Michelle Case explained the lease is a 2 year lease that will begin 8/15/19. They were paying $2,500 for rent, $1,750 for electric and $250 for water & sewer now. With the new lease they will now pay half of the water & sewer cost, a meter has been installed to read exactly how much electric is the county’s responsibility and rent will be $3,000 the first year and $3,150 the second year. This lease is also for 6,000 sq. feet, which is an additional 1,000 sq. feet. Commissioner Magness made a motion to approve. Commissioner Lackey seconded. Motion carried. 9 Discussion, Consideration and Action to reject the drywall and steel bids received for the Courthouse Restoration Project and to

it’s a matter of the county estimating realistic project cost with contingency funds. The number one enemy of restorations is unforeseen site condition, unforeseen conditions that lurk behind, below and above walls, floors and ceilings. A percentage of the project cost should be set aside under its own fund control point for typical and unforeseen (unknown) site conditions change orders. Next Gen Warrior: Success After Service Veterans Inspire Hope for After Active Duty Service

AUSTIN – Today, Veterans Land Board Chairman George P. Bush announced the launch of Next Gen Warrior, a new series formed as part of the ongoing Voices of Veterans oral history program. The program’s mission is to provide inspiration for Iraq and Afghanistan era Veterans as they step off the battlefield and into civilian life. Every Veteran has a story to tell, and the Voices of Veterans program ensures these stories of courage and service can inspire Texans for generations to come. While the General Land Office has preserved the stories of our Veterans from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, the way our Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan communicate is vastly different. The Voices of Veterans Next Gen Warrior program seeks to provide inspiration and guidance for Iraq and Afghanistan era Veterans as they transition to civilian life. Viewers can tune in on Instagram TV (@VoicesofVets), YouTube, Spotify, and their favorite podcasting platform. “Upon leaving active duty service, Veterans often encounter hurdles as they integrate back into society,” said Commissioner Bush.

2/5/13

“Far too often, we hear the stories of Veterans suffering from PTSD and depression. While these stories show the very real struggles faced by Veterans, far too often, we fail to tell the stories of success in the Veteran community. From radio producers to businessmen and women, Next Gen Warrior stories encourage their peers and demonstrate the opportunities available to soldiers when they take off their boots. The series shares not only Veterans stories from combat, but stories of success as they continue to contribute to our society.” Many Veterans struggle to find meaning in their work after service. This new program reminds Veterans that their service continues to make an impact on the people of Texas, even though it might not make headlines or save lives. The General

Land Office is committed to capturing our warrior’s stories and encouraging the next generation of Texas

Bonham City Council Receives Proposed Budget Binders to Prepare for5-7-19 Budget Workshop and Budget Hearings

By Sandy Hood

Here is a glimpse of the amazing new marketing brochure which will be used to shine the light on Bonham, Texas.

The Bonham City Council met on August 12, 2019. Mark Kinnaird gave the invocation. Agenda items and actions taken are as follows: 1) Minutes from the July 8, 2019 meeting were approved. 2) Dave Struchtemeyer gave the Financial Report for July 2016; this month we incurred $256,000 of cost for Bond Counsel Services and Financial Advisory Services related to securing the 2019 series $9 million of Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) bond funding for upgrading the Water and Waste Water Systems. We also incurred $34,000 of engineering fees related to the project. All costs are covered by TWDB bond funding. We also

incurred another $169,000 in construction costs related to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) improvements as stated in our agreed order with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) relating to the 2014 violations. This cost was covered by our 2016 Series TWDB bond funding. Proposed Budget Binders were submitted to the council for their review prior to the August 20th Budget Workshop. This budget utilizes the Rollback Tax Rate of .655 per $100 of value and assumes no changes in personnel cost. At the budget workshop the council will be provided with some different budget scenarios, a Fiscal Year Capital Budget and a 5 year plan. • A Budget Workshop is set for

8/2/16

August 20, 2019 at 5:30pm to be held at the Bonham City Hall. The public is welcome to attend and listen. • Two Public Hearings on the proposed tax rate are set. The public is urged to attend and express their views. The hearings are: 8/26/19 at 5:50pm at the Bonham City Hall and 9/3/19 at 5:30pm at the Bonham City Hall. 3) Citizens Opportunity to Speak: • Emily Porter was excited to share news about the success of the Quilt Hop. People from 29 Texas cities outside of Fannin County attended, as well as people from California, Oklahoma and Arizona. They are planning next year’s hop and have contracted with a Lord’s

Supper Quilt that will need 70 feet of viewing space. The quilt has 1,000’s of little 1 inch squares of the Lord’s Supper. There will also be a Trunk Show with really unique quilts. She gave a big thanks to the City Crew for all their help. • Jay Minton gave the council an update on Nolen Ashmore Way. Mayor Floyd stated that it sounded like something the city and the school needs to meet about. • Rusty Deets shared his concerns about the lack of sidewalks for students around the high school. He has a hard time understanding how a new high school could be built with no sidewalks. Continued See City Council on page 20

Lack of rain and increased temperatures has the Lone Star State facing growing drought conditions and wildlife risk. About 47 percent of the state is abnormally dry or experiencing some level of drought conditions. That is a significant bump from three months ago, where only 3 percent of the state was abnormally dry. “Drought coverage is 10 percent [in Texas]. That’s up from 1 percent in early July,” U.S. Department of Agriculture Meteorologist Brad Rippey said. “Oklahoma’s drought coverage is now 15 percent. There was no drought in Oklahoma five weeks ago.” The monthly drought outlook from the National Weather

Service shows likely drought development in the southern plains during August. The lack of rain, coupled with the intense heat Texas has recently experienced, presents a significant threat for wildfires, especially in the Concho Valley area surrounding San Angelo. “In this area, 14 consecutive days have been over 100 degrees,” said Mary Leathers, information officer for the Texas A&M Forest Service (TFS). “We’ve checked with the National Weather Service out of San Angelo, and they are telling us the last widespread, significant rainfall occurred in June.” Grass and other vegetation are drying out in the area, resulting in an increase in wildfires starting, she said. TFS has reported 164 wild-

fires throughout Texas in 2019, burning 22,400 acres with two homes lost. Numbers in all categories are expected to increase as the hot, dry conditions continue. Outdoor burn bans have been issued in more than 115 counties across Texas, and those numbers are expected to rise, as well. Click here to view the list of counties. Wildfires pose a significant threat to farms and ranches in these weather conditions, Leathers said. TFS now offers the Texas Ranch Wildlife Program with information and mapping tools to help landowners map out their land, identify items such as water sources and develop management plans to reduce the risk of loss from wildfires.

Hayes Equine Horse Health Tips We’ve had a lot of requests this month for how to tell an emergency from something that can wait until the morning or through the weekend. The following situations hopefully will help you differentiate the emergency from the non-emergency. Cuts/Scrapes Any laceration that goes more than skin deep has about six hours for a veterinarian to see it to be able to sew it closed. After that six hours, it starts to get healing tissue,

and infection also starts to set in. Once this happens, it’s really hard to get a wound to stay closed with stitches. So, if you’re wanting a smaller scar, the sooner you call, the better. If the wound looks more than a day old, it’s probably not an emergency to be seen. Now, there are some wounds that can’t be closed. These include punctures, and wounds that go deep into the muscle, or wounds that are “upside down,” where the skin portion of the laceration is higher than the muscle por-

tion. These sometimes can wait until the morning as long as the infection hasn’t set in and the horse has a current tetanus shot. A current tetanus shot means one given in the last six months. It’s always a good idea to have a tetanus shot boostered every year. We do still see tetanus and it’s entirely preventable with a $10 vaccine. Any wound on a leg where the leg is also lame, particularly if the horse can’t put any weight on it, needs to be seen right away.

Revamped Mobile Apps Must 1/1/19 Haves for Texas Hunters, Anglers

AUSTIN – When gearing up for hunting and fishing this fall, be sure to include two items from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department that won’t take up any more space and offer access to a world of resources: The Texas Outdoor Annual mobile app and the My Texas Hunt Harvest mobile app.

While hunters and anglers may be familiar with the printed Outdoor Annual booklet that has been a staple of tackle boxes and glove compartments for years, they may not be aware that the Outdoor Annual is now available as a mobile app. TPWD has developed this mobile app to give customers more choice in how they access important regulations information.

app, location-based information on hunting seasons and freshwater fishing locations (including water body specific regulations, access points and fishing reports), along with other in app features. The free app is available in app stores, at OutdoorAnnual.com or by texting TPWD OA to 468-311 to receive a download link. With the My Texas Hunt Harvest app, hunters and anglers can satisfy reporting requirements for eastern turkey, whitetailed deer and alligator gar harvest, as well as complete electronic on-site registration for most public hunting sites accessed when using the Annual Public Hunt (APH) Permit. Mandatory harvest reporting can also be completed online.

Updated hunting, fishing and boating regulations for the new season are now available in the Texas Outdoor Annual mobile app. Unique benefits of the app include: offline access to regulations once the app is downloaded, the ability to view your license within the

Starting Sept. 1, all alligator gar harvested from the public fresh waters of the state (other than Falcon International Reservoir) must be reported to TPWD within 24 hours of harvest. Alligator gar harvest data will help TPWD continue to manage healthy populations in wa-

Back-tracked and Busted A Tyler County game warden got a call from a hunting lease operator stating he had confronted several subjects trespassing on his lease. The warden responded and began cold trailing sets of ATV tracks leading off the property. After following the tracks through several adjacent properties the warden came upon some individuals in a wooded property who were working on an ATV. After waiting for backup from the county sheriff’s office, the warden made contact and initiated arrests for criminal trespass. During an inventory search, the warden discovered various narcotics and paraphernalia and additional charges were added. Cases are pending. Oh, Deer, Did You See That? While driving down I-35 near Belton, a caller reached out to let game wardens know he observed two live white-tailed deer fawns in the backseat of a Toyota Prius. The warden got the vehicle information and contacted its owner, who resided in Limestone County, and instructed him to meet at the sheriff’s office and turn over the two deer. Upon arrival, the warden seized the two fawns and noticed one had a hole in its ear due to a missing ear tag. The driver admitted that he

worked at a deer breeder facility/ranch in Dimmit County, and that he took both fawns (one from within the breeder facility without a valid permit and the other from outside the facility) without permission from the ranch manager. The warden took the driver into custody for Triple T Violation (Trap/Transport/Transplant Game Animal

Also new this fall, hunters in parts of south-central Texas will be required to report all antlerless deer harvest in Austin, Bastrop, Caldwell, Colorado, Dewitt, Fayette, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Karnes, Lavaca, Lee, Waller, Washington, and Wilson. Counties also included in that change are Goliad, Jackson, Victoria, and Wharton counties north of U.S. Highway 59 and Comal, Hays, and Travis east of IH-35. The season will run from Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, through the Sunday following Thanksgiving, Dec. 1. Harvest must be reported within 24 hours of take. Get the My Texas Hunt Harvest app at tpwd.texas.gov/myhunt. The app works without a data signal as long as it has already been downloaded to the device. Reportar en inglés o en español. The app is also bilingual and available in Spanish to customers who use Spanish as the main language setting on their phone or other mobile devices.

New this year, starting Sept. 1, are enhancements to make the licensing process simpler and faster. “Expedited checkout” speeds the process of re-purchasing the same license items bought during the previous three years. TPWD has also made it easier to show proof-oflicense. Now hunters and anglers can use an electronic image of their license as proof-of-license and show/ display it in any of these ways: (1) an electronic photo of your license, (2) an emailed receipt, (3) via your account within the license point-of-sale system, the Outdoor Annual App or the My Texas Hunt Harvest App (for hunters). You still must have your physical license for any activities requiring tags and the physical federal duck stamp for waterfowl hunting. License buyers will also enjoy a new, more mobile-friendly online system when purchasing on their phone.

Resident hunters and anglers can also purchase an entry in the Lifetime License Drawing. Three lucky winners will each win a Lifetime Super Combo License and never need to buy another Texas hunting or fishing license again. Entries are $5 each and can be purchased online, by phone or at any license retailer. The first entry deadline for the three monthly drawings is Sept. 30. Hunting and fishing regulations for the new season are available in the Outdoor Annual in print, online and on the Outdoor Annual mobile app. A limited number of Outdoor Annual booklets are available at license retailers. Timothy was presented with an award from Bonham Police Department for their appreciation for his assistance. The owner plans on building a nice duplex on this property. 6) The City Council adopted the Bonham Neighborhood Revitalization Grant Program. 7) The City Council appointed Glenn Taylor and Lee Ellis to the BEDCO board. Teresa Stapp and Kelly Royse were reappointed to the board. 8) Regarding proposals for the Lake Bonham Concession Stand, Sean Pate stated that they originally received 2 letters of interest. One individual was given an inside tour of the building and saw that obviously there is work that needs to be done and withdrew their proposal. No one was sure if the other person who sent in a proposal was still interested. Sean did suggest to the council that a forgiveness of a few months’ rent possibly be given to whoever they contract with, so that person could reinvest it into getting the building ready for business. The City Council tabled this item. The city will reach out to the other person who sent in a proposal and give them a tour of the building to see if they are still interested.

The Starting of School, or “Mommy I don’t want PBJ in my lunch!” John E. Hunt Administrative Assistant, Fannin County Criminal District Attorney School is about to start, or maybe has depending on where you are. This can be a very trying time for parents, kids, teachers and the public in general. Most of us have been through the rigors of getting our student ready for school, the clothes and the supplies. Gone are the Big Chief Tablets and the big red pencils. Teachers are spending money they do not have to get the classroom ready and the public needs to be aware of the kids on the streets, the school zones and the school busses. STOP really does mean STOP when that sign is out away from the bus. We want our kids to be safe but they are gone for the day and we as parents need to know they are safe, in a safe environment with safe friends and those around them. School violence has exploded over the last few years and the problem-children have gotten younger and more violent. Bullying is a fact of life, weapons at school happen, not every day, but it does happen. Some kid likes Bobby’s backpack better and takes it. We as parents have the responsibility to ensure that our student goes out that door in the morning knowing how to be safe. We have to talk to our kids

about what to do if they see a weapon at school or are the victim of bulling or witness it happening. We have to ask questions if we see mood changes in our kids. Have you talked to your student about drugs? Teachers have a responsibility to teach students, not just be roll takers because they have to deal with so many classroom disruptions. On May30, 2018 in light of the Santa Fe, Texas shooting, Governor Gregg Abbott issued a forty four (44) page document entitled “School and Firearms Safety Action Plan” that encompasses a great deal of material dealing with issues from mental health in schools to school resource officers and grants that are available. How do we prevent or at least control school violence and identify those who are the potential problems. How do we protect our kids? How do we protect our teachers and train them better? That all goes back to talking to our kids and us as parents paying attention. The Fannin County Criminal District attorney will be posting two different posters in the near future on the Fannin County Criminal District Attorney website, “Help Keep Your School Safe” for students and “Help Your Kid Be Safe at School” for parents. These are by no means the “fix all” however if you and your student are aware you, will be safer. Be Safe and DO NOT become a victim……Criminal District Attorney Richard E. Glaser

OBITUARIES

We think of you in silence, We often speak your name, But all we have are memories, And your picture in a frame.

MATTHEW R. SIMS BonhamMatthew R. Sims, age 53 of Ector, TX was born in Dallas, TX on April 12, 1966 to Dudley Pruitt and Norma Jean (Sheffield) Sims. Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church. Bro. Henry Shelton officiated; eulogy was presented by Mr. Vince McGee. Interment followed at Little Jordan Cemetery. Pallbearers were Daniel Barnett, Alan Balthrop, Gary Brown, Kenny Kranzoe, Tim Miller, Sam Gayle, Richard Chism, Tucker Chism, Victor Manuel and Austin Richardson. Honorary pallbearers were Reid Sims and Clay Sims. Matt loved gaming of all types, and always tried to share his love of it with as any people as he could. He didn’t referee just for the fame, fortune, and glory. He did it to involve you into the story of your own making, and return the karmic debt each of us owes to Gary Gygax. Whether it was DND, Munchkin, or the latest card game to hit the streets, his goal was to share a laugh and make your day better. Matt took up the mantle of de facto Dallas gaming coordinator from John Manning over a decade ago. He tried his best to include every group in the area, no matter how big or small, and whether they played Dungeons and Dragons or some other lesser game. He could be found at a local comic store or many conventions he supported. Gaming and fandom are what allowed him to meet Donna, the love of his life. He married Donna Jean (Sandlin) Sims on October 22, 2005 in Ector, TX. They enjoyed games of all types, as well as their passion for the Dallas Stars. On August 4, 2019, Matt went to roll initiative with John and Gary. He leaves behind a wealth of friends and family who loved him dearly. Take a moment to share what you love with someone else. Let's make the world a bit brighter. He is survived by wife, Donna

Sims of the home; sister, Vicki Smith and husband Timothy of Richardson, TX; brothers, Mark Sims and wife Marsha of Houston, TX and Mike Sims of Richardson, TX; 1 niece, numerous nephews along with multiple other extended family members and friends. SCOTTY HAZLEWOOD Memorial Services for Scotty Hazlewood, age 62 of Bonham, Texas, were held on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at 11 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Bonham, Texas under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Rev. Lisa Reece officiated. Scotty left us to be with the lord on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. He is whole and is renewed in heaven. He is filled with joy and laughter and is busy reconnecting with his loved ones. He was strong in his faith and loved the Lord. Later in life he joined the First Presbyterian Church in Bonham with his family. He enjoyed an active church life and was heavily involved with youth programs. He took great joy from his church life, his church family, and all the work they accomplished together. Scotty was also involved in the community. He enjoyed his time as Treasurer on the board of the Lake Fannin Volunteers, and the work done to convey that property back to Fannin County. He spent the last years working for Texas Parks & Wildlife at the Bonham State Park with Lee Ellis. He took enormous pride in his work at the park because it benefited his hometown and the community he loved. There are so many words to describe Scotty Hazlewood but love is who he was. He loved with all his heart and soul. He viewed those he met as an opportunity to learn and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. 1A Dodd City volleyball preparing now for certain playoffs later By Rich Hilliard

February 2018. The Lady Hornets will do so this season with a seven-player volleyball roster, with most of whom having been a part of 2018’s district championship team -- the first for the school in the sport in six years -- and Region II-1A quarterfinalist. Dodd City welcomes back senior setter Delaney Pilliod, who took on the role in 2018 on the varsity for the first time after the unexpected offseason departure of a veteran -and garnered first-team alldistrict notoriety. Pilliod equates the lone senior on the roster for fifth-year head volleyball coach Alex Stephenson, who claimed the district coaching superlative last fall. The Lady Hornets also this season regain the talents of junior Dani Baccus, who missed the previous volleyball season while recovering from a broken right elbow sustained during the 2018 offseason. Baccus earned second-team all-district recognition in 2017 as a freshman. Sophomores Kylee Graves and Tori Dotson also return, after low numbers last fall for volleyball at Dodd City necessitated the duo play on the varsity team. The veterans will be joined by newcomers Ali Preas, a 6-1 sophomore, and Rion Baccus, a freshman, on the varsity for the Lady Hornets, who entered the season at No. 5 on Aug. 5 in the lone 1A poll by the Texas Girls Coaches Association until the playoffs start in October.
