Joseph the most. (B) Ego: The satraps and administrators didn’t like being supervised by a Hebrew, whom they thought was lower than them. Therefore they plotted to have Daniel killed. (Daniel 6:4) (C) Insecurity: Saul feared David’s popularity will cost him his throne and the kingdom. (1 Samuel 18:7-9) (D) Greed: Solomon wrote, “All toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor.” (Ecclesiastes 4:4) This is selfexplanatory. (E) Frustration: Frustrations and lack of faith also cause us to envy others.

will arrive in Bonham at about 10:00 am and leave us for the drive to Bug Tussle at about 11:15. This year they will be parking on the parking lot next to the Panther Row Eatery. The Bug Tussle Trek has been making this trip for 51 years. Nicole Waggoner, the organizer of the group says: “It has been continuous for all those years and has always followed about the same route.” She states: “The biggest difference is that they now have less Model T’s and more 1950’s

Trek started after a conversation among members about one last car tour for the summer. They opened a copy of the Farmer’s Almanac and picked the hottest day of the year which happened to be the last Saturday of August that year. They really did stop in Bug Tussle where a once thriving general store was the only place they could find to get something cold to drink. Ever since, the Trek has been on the last Saturday of August. And of course, they always go to the

nancial cliff. Banks were failing and the housing market had collapsed. We weren’t sure if there would be money in the ATM when we tried to make a withdrawal. Right now, our country is in the direst financial position since the Great Depression – for ordinary people at any rate. The common denominator in each of these crises is that the Republican Party was in charge when they occurred. This does not appear to me to be “fiscal responsibility.” Once again, we need a change. Press Release - Powder Creek Pavilion presents a celibration of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Sat. Aug. 29th at 8pm. 520 S. Center St. Bonham, TX. 75418. (903) 227-1911. Little Skynyrd is an authentic Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band based in North Texas. The band is comprised of musicians who grew up with Skynyrd, love playing their music, and strive to keep their music alive. Skynyrd wrote and played some the most rockin’, high-energy, fun, kick-ass music ever. Little Skynyrd is out to play those great songs as close to the originals as possible. Our goal is to make you feel like you are back in the 70’s at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert. With a twin guitar assault, rock solid vocals, honky tonk piano, and a thumping rhythm section, Little Skynyrd delivers all of the passion and energy of the originals, cranking out all the Skynyrd classics. So release your inner Free Bird and let’s party like it’s 1975!

Rick Crow -- Lead Vocals as Ronnie Van Zant Rick brings powerful vocals and southern attitude to the stage. His ability to sing melodically and yet gritty at times allows him to emulate the varying Skynyrd vocals. Gen Wilkinson -- Lead Guitar as Allen Collins Gen is a professional lead guitarist and songwriter who has performed on regional and national stages since the 80’s. Southern rock has always been her genre of choice. Gen’s stage presence and ability to convey emotion through her guitar work is something to be experienced first-hand. Gen is sponsored by Rocky Mountain Slides and has a signature slide. Robbie King -- Lead Guitar / Vocals as Gary Rossington Just like Rossington, Robbie offers technical precision on lead guitar by hitting all the leads and fills note for note. Robbie has had the privilege of sharing the stage with Pat Travers, Bonnie

Riatt, Johnny Neel (formerly of the Allman Brothers Band), and countless other stars. You can always count on him to be spot on and deliver the goods. Mike McGill -- Drums as Artimus Pyle Mike is a monster on the drums. His very physical yet precise style of drumming is the perfect fit to play the hard driving Skynyrd songs. He will be heard and he demands attention. Larry Bomgardner -- Bass Guitar / Vocals as Leon Wilkinson Slapping the bass with his amazingly accurate bass riffs Larry really brings some “thump” to the rhythm section. You will feel it in your bones when that bass line kicks in. Larry Ashby -- Keyboards / Piano as Billy Powell Tickling the ivorys in true honky tonk fashion Larry puts on a great show for the fans. Whether dishing up a tasty keyboard solo or laying down a solid rhythm he will be sure to impress.

Press Release - Earlier this month Fannin Central Appraisal District mailed out postcards to all owners of property in Fannin County. The purpose of the postcard is to direct property owners to a website https://fannin.countytaxrates. com/tax created under the provisions of SB2 in an effort to keep taxpayers informed and aware of tax rates being considered by the taxing jurisdictions (County, School Districts and Cities). The website is searchable and will provide important information regard-

ing the time and location of public hearings and specific taxing unit points of contact. This new website will not replace the notice of appraised value that property owners receive in May nor will it replace the Tax Statement (Bill) that comes out in October. What it does though is provides property owners information regarding the actions taxing units are taking to set the tax rates and their effect on your wallet. Property owners have a voice in this process and this website is a tool to learn about

the times and locations of public hearings and how much the taxing unit will charge you for their services. This information is also published in the paper but the notice in the paper does not address the impact to your specific property. Questions regarding the proposed tax rates and their impact to individual property taxes should be directed to the point of contact at the taxing unit and not the appraisal district. Mike Jones, Chief Appraiser

Commissioners Continue Discussion of 2020/2021 County Budget

By Connie Estes

County Judge Randy Moore called the special meeting to order Monday, August 17, 2020 at 10:02 a.m. All Commissioners were present, establishing a quorum. In Public Forum, Judge Royce Smithey, Justice of the Peace Pct. 1, spoke to the Court concerning his budget potentially being lowered to reduce his office by one clerk. Judge Smithey presented to the Court a description of the duties for both clerks he employs. He asked that everything is looked at very carefully throughout the budget process before putting people out on the streets looking for work during this Covid pandemic. The Court is not allowed to respond in Public Forum. Judge Moore asked each Commissioner if they would like to report on what’s been

going on with them since the storms last night, which was Sunday, August 16. Each Commissioner stated they had worked late to answer calls and clear downed trees on roads. Commissioner Lackey said more calls had come in since daylight, due to people heading out to work. He cautioned everyone to be safe and not work alone. Judge Moore thanked each Commissioner for their work. Discussion, consideration and action regarding 2020/2021 Fiscal Year Budget for Fannin County began with the line item for the Constables’ budgets, where the Court left off last week in the Monday, August 17, 2020 meeting. The Sheriff Department’s budget was greatly discussed as it is larger with costs for jail operations, housing, medical, vehicle mainte-

nance, etc. Sheriff Johnson was present and explained a lot of prisoners are being held longer than ever because of the delays in the courts due to the pandemic. The Sheriff has no control over when the cases are presented in court. Sheriff Johnson said so many cases are repeat offenders who just

come and go constantly in the system. District Attorney Richard Glaser stated there is a Grand Jury scheduled for Thursday, August 20th. The Grand Jury is expected to process a record of 107 cases. The highest number previously processed is 70. Commissioner Lackey said he would refer to what Judge

Smithey said earlier, this morning. Laying people off is not the solution. He asked how many will be laid off next year? District Attorney Glaser assured the court that Judge Blake is working to move cases forward. Sheriff Johnson said offenses are at an all-time high. The budget discussions are ongoing and lengthy because

the Court and all the department heads want what is best for the County but also what is best for each department. Judge Moore said movement in the prisoner processing is happening. He asked for a monthly update in order to stay informed. Judge Moore adjourned the meeting at 11:57 a.m.

Press Release - As most may know, Fannin County currently has a lease with the USFS (United States Forest Service) for the historical area of the lake. The Lake Volunteers are now, as they have been in the

past, working to bring back Lake Fannin to its former glory. The roof on the lodge has been leaking for a while and the LFV received permission from the USFS and THC (Texas Historical Commission)

to repair the roof. A portion of the roof was removed in an effort to repair the leak, but it was then discovered that much more needed to be done than what the LFV could do. They have received an excellent quote but their current funds aren’t enough to replace the entire roof. The Lake Fannin Volunteers are asking for help in replacing the roof on the historic lodge at Lake Fannin and would appreciate any help from the public in making this happen. The goal is to bring this beautiful location back to what is was for the citizens of Fannin County to enjoy. Anyone wishing to donate may contact Gabe Parker at 903-227-1921 or Alicia Whipple at 903-814-8435.

NASTY WORDS When Senator Kamala Harris was named the Democratic nominee for Vice President, Donald Trump called her a “Nasty” woman. Of course, to paraphrase Jim Hightower, being called “nasty” by Donald Trump is like being called ugly by a toad. For years, now, opponents of the Democratic Party have tried to turn perfectly good terms into dirty words. Here’s one:

LIBERAL “If by a ‘Liberal’ they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people--their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties--someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a ‘Liberal,’ then I am proud to say I’m a ‘Liberal.’” - President John F. Kennedy, Democrat, (Profiles in Courage, 1956) “What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican Party? I’ll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water act. “What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things, every one. So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, ‘liberal,’ as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won’t work, because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor.” - Lawrence O’Donnell, Jr.

VOLUNTEER: To volunteer for the local Democratic Party, click on fctxdems.org or write to The Fannin County Democratic Party, P.O. Box 297, Bonham, TX 75418. You can also use these methods to contribute material for THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE.

DONATE: To Donate to the local Democratic Party, send check or money order to The Fannin County Democratic Party, P.O. Box 297, Bonham, TX 75418. Contributions are not tax deductible.

Weather, Habitat Conditions Promising for 2020-21 Dove Season

AUSTIN — September marks the start of dove season for 5/7/19 more than 300,000 Texas hunters per year. While 2020 surveys of dove populations were cancelled due to ongoing public health concerns, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) estimates promising hunting conditions ahead of the start of the season. With a breeding population of about 25 million mourning doves and up to 15 million white-winged doves in Texas, conditions are ripe for a fruitful season. Dove population numbers swell during the hunting season as doves migrate into Texas from other areas in the flyway. With favorable habitat conditions throughout much of the state leading into September, hunters can look forward to a favorable season. Above average rainfall state-

wide throughout the spring season has led to prime habitat conditions during the peak nesting months of May and June. Biologists suggest that dry conditions in the northern and western regions of the state may help concentrate birds around food and water sources during the season. Portions of south Texas and the Rio Grande Valley received significant rainfall during Hurricane Hanna but it’s unclear if, or to what degree, these rains will have an affect on doves come September. Texas makes up one-third of the overall mourning dove har-

vest in the United States. In addition, Texas makes up about one-third of the overall dove hunters in the United States. Throughout the state, there are three dove game species-mourning, white-winged and whitetipped doves. Despite the cancellation of this year’s annual dove surveys, banding efforts were able to continue statewide. TPWD biologists place leg bands on thousands of mourning and white-winged doves to monitor the factors that influence their populations. Information from hunter-reported bands, or “re-

coveries”, provide estimates of harvest and survival rates. This information is used in conjunction with data from the Harvest Information Program (HIP), Parts Collection Survey and other harvest surveys to help manage populations and set annual hunting regulations. Hunters are encouraged to report any birds they recover that have leg bands. Anyone hunting on Texas Public Hunting Lands are also required to purchase an Annual Public Hunting Permit. Texas has more than 1 million acres of land that is accessible to the public.

6/9/20 I was so excited and happy to receive several recipes from Wilma Arnold of Bonham! I choose the squash casserole first, since we are still in our gardens, if yours hasn’t burned up from our hot Texas August days. This recipe is different from any squash casserole recipe I’ve seen, because it calls for sour cream or yogurt, and is cooked in layers. It sounds really tasty, so I hope some of you will give it a try. SQUASH CASSEROLE 2 pounds of yellow crooked neck squash 2 medium onions 1 package of Herb Farm Seasoned Bread Stuffing 1 can cream of chicken soup, undiluted 1 (8 oz.) carton sour cream or plain yogurt 1 jar small strips pimiento or diced 1 can (small) water chestnuts, sliced 1 stick butter or margarine

The City of Bonham and the Bonham Public Library Awarded CARES Act Grant to Advance Digital Equity

Bonham, TX — The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) recently awarded funding to the Bonham Public Library under the TSLAC CARES Grant program. Bonham Public Library was selected to receive a $22,726 grant to advance digital equity in Bonham. Provided by the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, the funding will be used by the library to expand digital inclusion efforts and provide technical support, especially for workforce development and broadband availability. Thirty‐seven other libraries across the state have also received grants through this program. Libraries have long been the place that people looked to find out information. Days gone by, that information source was books stacked on shelves. Now, more and more, the information is available online and the library is trying to serve as the source helping people access that information. “All community members have the right to digital resources like tablets and high speed broadband that are essential for learning, working, and daily life,” said John D. Hayden, Library Director “Our library strives to enrich and empower lives, and this CARES Act grant will put us closer to that goal. “The communities we serve will benefit tremendously from this funding, and we look forward to implementing new programs and expanding our existing resources to support digital equity for all our patrons.” Bonham Public Library will use grant funds to reduce direct patron/staff contact because of COVID-19 without reducing customer service, and to improve technical services while allowing for social distancing and limits on the number of patrons in the library. This includes the purchase of self-serve checkout kiosks, a handsfree print and payment station, expansion of wi-fi access to new outdoor seating areas, wi-fi hotspots and tablets that may be checked out for use at home, and video equipment for the development of online programming. Bonham Public Library will use the grant to offer: a. One Stop Shop Kiosk for self-serve printing, self-serve check-out and a credit card terminal. b. Launchpad Tablets for children, teens, and adults. We will be purchasing the Launchpad Reading Academy Tablets. This 5-level

guided reading system helps kids master verbal, reading, and writing skills — starting at any level. We are also purchasing Arcade Master, Brain Stim, Learn Algebra I & Algebra II, Moo Do You Love?, and Design, Build, Connect! Tablets for check-out. c. Green Screen and equipment for virtual programs. d. Washable keyboards and mice. e. Hot Spots to loan out to families during this time who are remote learning and do not have access to the internet. f. Outdoor Seating area with outdoor Wi-Fi and more. Here at the Bonham Public Library we are always looking at ways we can enrich a life by empowering them in all the aspects of their life. We believe this project will benefit Bonham and the surrounding area. The Texas State Library and Archives Commission received the funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to support libraries in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. In March, Congress provided the federal agency a total of $50 million in the CARES “The COVID‐19 pandemic has demonstrated the many ways libraries are more essential than ever in meeting local needs to stay connected and informed,” said Mark Smith, TSLAC Director and State Librarian. “We are grateful to the IMLS and the federal government for providing this assistance to libraries across Texas as they support their communities in these challenging times.” IMLS Director Crosby Kemper III said in a written statement, “COVID-19 has not only created a public health emergency, but it has also created a deep need for trusted community information, education, and connection that

our libraries and museums are designed to provide. Access to and use of all kinds of health, job, government, educational, and community resources are necessary to weathering the current situation, beginning efforts to reopen, and sustaining our institutions.” ABOUT THE TEXAS STATE LIBRARY AND ARCHIVES COMMISSION Formed in 1909, TSLAC is committed to giving Texans access to information and programs to improve their lives and communities. TSLAC provides historical and genealogical search as-

sistance, federal and state government documents, electronic research, and library services to all Texans, including those who are unable to read standard print material because of physical or reading disabilities. For more information, visit www. tsl.texas.gov. This project is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (Grant #LS‐246561‐ OLS‐20) to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act. Cannady Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter

(Bonham, Texas – August 12, 2020) On Monday, August 10, 2020 in the 336th District Court of Fannin County, Defendant Keagan Hunter Cannaday pled guilty to three charges of Intoxicated Manslaughter and two charges of Intoxicated Assault. The Hon. Judge Laurie Blake of the 336th District Court then presided over a sentencing hearing. Cannaday, agreed to waive a trial by jury and requested the Court to determine his sentence. Cannaday was given the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison in the manslaughter cases and 10 years in the assault cases. The incident giving rise to the case occurred almost a year earlier on August 30, 2019, when just before midnight Arnulfo Alvarez of Sulphur Springs, along with his pregnant wife Juana Torres, and their two sons Lucas and Andres, were traveling on Highway 11 just west of Whitewright. As they approached a narrow bridge, Alvarez could see headlights in his lane coming from the opposite direction at a high rate of speed. Alvarez, trapped on the bridge, could only slam on his breaks and brace himself for impact. The headlights came from a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 driven by the then 20-year old Cannaday. Intoxicated from beer purchased by a friend, the underage Cannaday lost control of his truck as he approached the bridge from the other end as Alvarez. Cannaday’s truck first struck the guardrail which sent him flying into the oncoming lane of traffic straight into the path of Alvarez. DPS Trooper Devon Cooper, who responded to the scene and testified at the sentencing hearing, stated the collision could only be described as “violent.” As Cannaday’s truck ripped through the passenger side of Alvarez’s truck, the pregnant Torres, the unborn child and her 2-year old son Lucas Alvarez seated directly behind her, were killed instantly. Cannaday’s truck was launched over the concrete wall of the bridge and landed some distance away. Bystanders, who arrived shortly after the accident, pulled Cannaday from his burning vehicle. Cannaday and 3-year old victim Andres Alvarez were careflighted to Metroplex hospitals while Arnulfo Alvarez was taken by ambulance to a McKinney Hospital. Testifying at the August 10 sentencing hearing Alvarez described in vivid detail the harrowing experience of the aftermath of the crash. An emotional Alvarez described how he laid down and pulled his son Andres out of the truck and then began his frantic search for his wife and other son. As Judge Laurine Blake lis-

tened, the mother of Juana Torres, Mary Luna, described the impact the night had on them and hole that is now left their family. Officer Charles Gage, a former Trenton police officer, testified how even now, almost a year later, he is still haunted by memories of that night. On August 11, Cannaday himself spent the morning on the witness stand as the hearing continued. Cannaday agreed that day he met a friend, 24-year old Aaron Mussett, who purchased him a 12-pack of Corona beer at a local convenience store. Cannaday’s admission confirmed the findings of Teresa Hall of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission who conducted a source investigation and provided surveillance video of Mussett purchasing the beer for Cannaday. Cannaday also confirmed Hall’s findings that he and Mussett drove in separate vehicles to the Cowboy Club, a bar in Van Alstyne. Cannaday admitted during the investigation of the case he told DPS troopers he drank 4 or 5 beers before he got to the Cowboy Club. Initially, the Cowboy Club denied Cannaday entry, as he was underage, but they allowed him inside after his father arrived and agreed to watch over him. Surveillance video obtained by Hall from the Cowboy Club showed Cannaday was unable to obtain more alcohol inside the club. Around 11:20 p.m. Cannaday and Mussett left Van Alstyne and made their way back to Fannin County via Highway 11, where the crash took place. Mussett testified he was traveling behind Cannaday going around 65-75 mph while Cannaday was likely traveling upwards of 85 mph. Three hours after the crash, a sample of Cannaday’s blood was taken and when analyzed showed Cannaday’s blood alcohol concentration to be .141 g/ ml. The legal limit is .08 g/ ml. Prosecutors from the Fannin County District Attorney’s Office urged the court in their closing arguments to consider stacking Cannaday’s sentences which would require Cannaday to serve the sentence in each and every case separately from the other sentence. Judge Laurie Blake, recognizing the seriousness of the crime and the devastating loss sustained by the Alvarez and Torres families, gave the maximum sentence of 20 years and 10 years in all cases, but told a tearful Cannaday his decision to accept responsibility was a major factor in her decision to not stack his sentences. Under Texas law, Cannaday must serve at least half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Photo by Rich Hilliard By Rich Hilliard TRENTON -- As head coach now of volleyball and girls basketball at Class 2A Trenton, Ashley Anderson has spoken about “carrying success” from one sport to the other. The building of that momentum starts this month, as the Lady Tigers commence their 2020 volleyball season with an experienced decorated roster. Two 2019 District 12-2A superlative recipients head the roster: senior Maddison Lavoie, the co-offensive player of the year, and sophomore Autumn Miles, the top libero. COVID-19 prompts changes in slates for Fannin football teams Once new districts have been announced by the University Interscholastic League in the winter, head coaches fill in and finalize schedules shortly afterward for the following two seasons. Late this summer, COVID-19 prompted coaches unexpectedly to have to find replacement opponents or make location changes, as various parts of Texas experienced the pandemic differently. In Fannin County, only Class 3A-II Leonard did not have to make schedule adjustments, as Shane Fletcher starts his 16th season at the Tigers helm. For 3A-I Bonham, it equated having to Bonham’s Mason Rodriguez find a different seathrows a pass on Aug. 15 during the son opener opponent, annual Purple-White Scrimmage at as head coach Kyle Warrior Stadium. Meanwhile, 2A-I Honey Grove will still face Tenaha to start its season, but will now host the contest on Aug. 28. The game site had to be changed when Athens ISD, originally the host site for the contest, declined to do so due to COVID-19, according to third-year Honey Grove head coach Glen Schuelke. While not affecting its opener, second-year Trenton head coach Josh Shipman also had to make a change in the 2A-I Tigers’ schedule. Trenton will now play host on Sept. 18 to Maypearl. The Tigers had been scheduled on that date to face Dallas Gateway. Head coach Gabe Lane also had to make changes in 1A-II Fannindel’s slate, as he starts the third year of his second stint in Ladonia. When COVID-19 prompted the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools to delay the start of practice for its sports teams until Sept. 8 -- and football games until a few weeks later -- it negated the Falcons’ scheduled contest with Greenville Christian. Instead, on Sept. 18, Fannindel will play at Grayson Christian. The Falcons will now close non-district action by playing

host to Greenville Christian on Oct. 9. The delay by TAPPS had also decimated 1A-I Savoy’s nondistrict schedule. However, a lack of athletes interested in playing football has prompted 1A-I six-man Savoy to forgo fielding a high school team in 2020, according to Savoy head football coach and athletic director Clay Wilson. Hope remains to play football in 2020 at Savoy at the junior high level, if there are sufficient numbers, Wilson said. Last fall, injuries prompted the cancellation of a few varsity games, as Savoy finished 0-6 on the field and missed the postseason while competing in District 9-1A-I. Savoy had consistently fielded six-man high school teams since the 2012 season, when the football program there converted from being an 11-man. Success followed: The Cardinals won district championships and made the postseason every previous season but two: 2017 and 2019.
