event in 2019 out of the ACS Dallas Region Market. So, you see, Fannin County Relay has had a big impact on our communities since we first started in June 2000 – that’s over 23 years ago! Let’s keep this going and make a difference!
We’re heading back to the track! This year’s event will be held at Bonham High School Warrior Stadium, 1002 Warpath, Bonham, Texas 75418, on September 23, with the opening ceremony beginning at 1:00 p.m. This
year’s theme: “Cancer is no fairytale” We invite all survivors to enjoy a free meal prior to the main event from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. provided by Fannin Bank. We know that the last couple of years have presented many challenges in the fight against cancer, but we continue to work hard and support the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. Cancer patients and their families need us now more than ever!
Cancer hasn’t stopped and neither can we. Your donations help the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking cancer research, provide free information and support, a 24/7 hotline, and help prevent cancer and find it earlier when it’s easier to treat. Your donation will truly help save lives.
If you have been on a Relay team in the past, or are interested in forming a team for the first time this year, we NEED you!! Come join the fight and help us attack cancer from every angle! Last season we raised $41,795 and this year's goal is to raise $35,000.

to very short due to extreme heat. Within the past 45-plus days, drought conditions had devastated crops and pastures. The temperatures throughout the district remained in the triple digits over the past week with little to low wind. Lack of moisture has decreased hay production, corn, soybeans, sorghum and cotton. Live-
stock conditions were good. There were no significant diseases or insect pests. Some nuisance flies were present.
WEST CENTRAL Hot and dry conditions persisted, with high temperatures in the triple digits and little precipitation.
Cotton conditions were deteriorating due to limited water. Forage sorghum and hay crops
were in poor to fair condition. Wildfire concerns continued as a few occurred in the area. Insect problems continued, especially grasshoppers. Stock tank levels continued to decrease, and smaller tanks dried up. Livestock producers started hay and supplemental feeding due to the lack of pasture and rangeland grass.

Bonham’s Mud Streets Were Paved
By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Museum of History
The 25th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham Bonham was behind other towns in paving its streets.
The main streets of Bonham were hub deep in mud during the rainy season. Bonham citizens were tired of having to wade in the mud on unpaved streets and sidewalks.
In 1911 a new city charter was adopted for Bonham. Apparently it allowed for the issuing of bonds. The first action of the new City Council was ordering of a bond issue of $100,000 for street paving and street improvements. The issue carried by 8 to 1.
The City would pay a portion of the expense of paving the streets and the owners of abutting property paid their proportionate part of the remaining cost. The City paid for all intersections.
The streets around the Square and down Main Street to the T&P Depot were the first streets to be paved.
We are so fortunate to have many wonderful photos of the paving process which were taken by Erwin Smith and are available online at the website of the Amon Carter Museum. It must have been amazing to Bonham citizens to see this work taking place.
Because of the paved street around the Court House, the Commissioners enlarged the Court House ground, creating what was called then a “park.”
Concrete sidewalks reaching from the four sides of the Court House to the paved street were installed. Trees and grasses were planted. The work proceeded quickly.
By 1914 the downtown area was being paved and concrete sidewalks laid. Citizens were clamoring for more bonds to black-top the residential streets.
In 1915 more street paving and black topping was done in the residential sections.
The City also paid for the sweeping of the streets 3 times a week. It seems that mud from the streets that were not paved ended up on the paved streets.
In 1914 the Bonham Daily Favorite was advocating the paving of the street out to Willow Wild Cemetery. By 1917 the road to Willow Wild had been paved.
This was an amazing time of growth in Bonham. Mayor Joe Thurmond wrote in the Bonham News, Nov 14, 1916:
“Within the last five years Bonham has done more public improvement than was done by her in twenty years . . . We have paved all of our business streets, and many of our residence streets, and the work of paving is still under way. We have built within the past two years a modern High School building, one of the best in the State, built a splendid sewerage system, built many splendid homes, several new churches, new store buildings, and enlarged our Cotton Mill twice and have built many miles of concrete sidewalks.”
In addition to the streets in Bonham, by 1916, due to the passage of Good Roads bonds, Bonham had 60 miles of “good paved roads” leading to Bonham and would soon have 100 miles.

The Attitude For Joy (Part One)
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
The Lord declared, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them” (John 13:17). Christ desires our happiness. He doesn’t desire our happiness in sin. To the woman caught committing adultery, Jesus said, “Go, and sin no more” (John 8:11). The Son of God gave ingredients for the attitude for joy.
Jesus spoke this truth, “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:4). Humility is one of the ingredients to the attitude for joy. We are reminded by James, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up” (James 4:10).
Christ educated us by teach-
ing that “Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh”
(Luke 6:21). Peter preached “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord”
(Acts 3:19). The Lord said “Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy” (John 16:20). Being penitent is a key ingredient to the attitude of joy.
Meekness, which is the opposite of arrogance, is an ingredient to the attitude of joy. Solomon wrote “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate” (Proverbs
8:13). God finds great value in meekness. Peter penned these words, “let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price” (1 Peter 3:4).
A strong desire to pursue things that are right is a vital part of the ingredients of the attitude of joy. Peter wrote that “As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). Paul reminds us that “the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost” (Romans 14:17).
These are just some of the ingredients for the attitude of joy. When we take these things and add them to our lives and character, we will find the proper attitude for Joy.
Sunday Morning Re-take “Let Go and Let God”
Hello everyone!
The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:17-19, “The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all.”
Once again, I am reminded of an old saying that I first heard many years ago, “Let Go and Let God.” About a year ago, I shared with you an experience that perfectly symbolizes this saying, and as I was thinking of what to write this week, I feel led to share this again. In the summer of 2001, I went with our church youth group to youth camp in Eufaula, Oklahoma. On the last night, after the evening service, we were all given a stick, and were sent outside to gather around a campfire. The stick represented a burden or a care that we had, that needed
to be turned over to the Lord.
Once we committed to do so, we were asked to throw our sticks into the campfire. As I’ve said before, this is symbolic of what we are commanded in 1 Peter 5:7, which is that we are to cast our cares upon Him, because He cares for us.
Back in 1906, Charles Albert Tindley wrote a classic hymn that also symbolizes this experience. I love the message in this song.
“If the world from you withhold of its silver and its gold, and you have to get along with meager fare, Just remember, in His Word, how He feeds the little bird, take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.”
“Leave it there, leave it there, Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.
If you trust and never doubt, He will surely bring you out, Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there.”
If you are in search of a good church home, we invite
you to come visit and be part of our worship here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself.
By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday

Cooper SLOW. Water lightly stained; 89 degrees; 0.5 feet above pool. Few reports and anglers on the water due to heat. Best fishing will be early or late in the evening. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 87 degrees; 3.04 feet below pool. Catfish are good on cut shad and bluegill in 1020 feet of water, or on submerged brushes and over hanging trees. Pre-baited holes will hold channel catfish 5-15 feet of water. Bluegills are great on worms in 10-20 feet of water on brush piles. A 2-4 pound line is imperative. Crappie are good on timber, brush and rocky ledges in10 to 25 feet of water. Black bass are slow during the day with the best bite early, or later into the night.
Ray Roberts GOOD. Water is clear; 89 degrees; 1.22 feet below pool. Typical fishing patterns for the dog days of summer. White bass continue to be good with keeper sized fish in 30 feet of water on slabs. Crappie are fair on brush piles and trees in 25 feet of water using minnows. Bass are good with a sporadic topwater, but most catches on Carolina rigs or dropshots in 15-25 feet of water over main lake structures. Catfish are fair.
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 90 degrees; 0.81 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni is fishing good overall despite some of the highest water temperatures we have seen in a long time. White bass and striper fishing has been good early in the day. Fish are moving and keeping up with them has been a chore. Trolling and throwing slabs are working in 10-20 feet of water. Eater sized catfish are great. Channels and blue catfish are abundant on prepared baits in 20-30 feet of water. The crappie bite is good early then slacks off mid morning. Live bait is working best right now in 10-15 feet of water. Largemouth bass have been good early and late on white frogs, crankbaits and Carolina rigged black worms. Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 86-90 degrees; 0.10 feet above pool. Striped bass are excellent on topwaters early in the morning sight fishing. When the topwater fish are smaller fish beneath for larger catches with slabs. Lots of small fry feeding on the surface shad. Fish early. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striped bass fishing is great on live shad or topwaters. Locating schools of small fish on the surface of flats or deep ledges. Fish live bait 20-35 feet down to catch better size fish. Big fish are feeding shallow early in the mornings as the water temperatures reach 90 degrees this week. Smallmouth or largemouth bass are slow, with fish tucked in the rocks and not eager to eat a live shad. Crappie fishing is slow on jigs fishing brush piles in 5-10 feet of water using electronics to locate fish.
Riding Shotgun While Potter and Deaf Smith County Wardens patrolled the Canadian River Off-Highway Vehicle Area, they received information from multiple parties about adult males offroading and shooting rifles illegally near the hiking trails around Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Rosita Creek Flats. Walking through the flats, the wardens located three adult males who displayed multiple anti-police tattoos and clothing. One of the individuals carried two rifles, an AK-47 and a .308 caliber, as well as paper targets. Some of the individuals were from out of state; the wardens additionally observed that their vehicle did not display a Texas OHV decal. Upon checking with the Potter County Sheriff’s Office, the wardens learned that one was a convicted felon with outstanding warrants for various charges. The wardens arrested the individual without incident. A National Park Service Ranger arrived on scene and issued a federal citation to the individual who had been illegally target shooting. The owner of the vehicle also received a citation for failing to display proper decals required by law.

the fish and stashed their spears in the woods. The warden followed the men into the woods to retrieve the spears. During their walk, one of the gentlemen walked slowly while the other walked further ahead at a quicker pace. Realizing that they were trying to split up, the warden ran to catch up to the man furthest away, catching him with two spears in his hand and a bag with 70 speared and gutted fish including sunfish, bluegill, Rio Grande cichlids, fresh-water drum, undersized black bass and channel catfish. Neither man possessed a fishing license. The warden issued multiple citations.

Never Split the Party
A Williamson County Game Warden responded to multiple reports of two men spearfishing and keeping a large quantity of fish. The warden contacted the individuals as they were exiting the woods and returning to their vehicle. During their conversation, he noticed they did not have any fish or spears in their possession. He learned that the reporting party threatened the men with calling the police. Nervous about police interference, they said they released

How to Help Keep Your Child Safe and Healthy This School Year
(StatePoint) As students return to classrooms, doctors say that it’s important to ensure that children are up-to-date with routine childhood vaccinations.
“The evidence around vaccinations is abundantly clear; they’re safe, effective and will help protect you, your loved ones and your community from preventable diseases. If you have questions about vaccines, their safety, or effectiveness, please speak to your physician. We are here for you, eager to answer your questions, and ensure your family is protected,” says Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, M.D., M.P.H., president of the American Medical Association (AMA).
In an effort to promote a safer, healthier school year for everyone, the AMA is sharing these vaccine facts and insights:
• Vaccines are safe, effective and save lives. Routine childhood immunization is highly effective at preventing disease over a lifetime, reducing the incidence of all targeted diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella, polio and chickenpox. For the U.S. population in 2019, vaccines prevented more than 24 million cases of disease.
• The benefits of vaccines can

be quantified. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination of children born between 1994 and 2021 will prevent 472 million illnesses, almost 30 million hospitalizations and more than 1 million deaths, saving nearly $2.2 trillion in total societal costs, including $479 billion in direct costs.
• Vaccination rates have fallen. Even before the rise in vaccine misinformation and disinformation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine hesitancy was increasing, elevating the risk of community outbreaks, which put under-and unvaccinated children at risk for serious illnesses, like measles. According to a mid-January 2023 report from the CDC, vaccination coverage decreased in most states for all vaccines among kindergarteners for the 2021-22 school year when compared with the previous school year, which was already below pre-pandemic levels.
• Speak to your child’s physician. With increased misinformation around vaccinations, it is critical that you seek out reliable, evidence-based sources for information. These sources may begin with websites like getvaccineanswers.org, but they should also include your child’s physician.
Physicians can also answer questions on the new monoclonal antibody therapy, nirsevimab, available for infants and children under the age of 19 months, for the prevention of RSV disease.
• Don’t let cost be a barrier. Programs like Vaccines for Children (VFC) are federally funded to provide no-cost vaccinations to children whose families otherwise could not afford them. Parents can learn more by contacting their state or local health department.
“Make an annual well-child visit and immunizations a part of your household’s back-toschool routine,” says Dr. Ehrenfeld. “Doing so will protect you and your family from a number of preventable illnesses. It’s something I do for my own children, and I urge you to do so, too.”
