JTB Bladeworks Unisex Grooming Salon is excited to announce the grand opening and ribbon cutting for Bonham’s first wellness and liaison salon on August 10, 2020 from 9AM to 6PM. The salon is located at 2009 TX-121, in between the nail salon and the wireless store. The new salon features award winning stylists and platform

artists, and luxury natural grooming products. It will also serve as a recruiting and training salon, working with stylists from Diamond Cosmetology College and Grayson Community College in Sherman, to help them build their clientele and grow their business as stylists. The salon gets its name from the owner, Jade Anthony, AKA Jade The Blade. Jade is an award winning stylist and platform artist. She is a former global platform artist and educator for Farouk (the parent company of Chi), and is the current show director for AT Ease Hair & Skin Care (Plano TX) and Chew’s

Hair Affair (Lake Charles, LA). Jade first started cutting hair at 6 years old in her mother’s kitchen, and began her formal training in Chicago in 1989, continues her education to this day, and continues to impress clients and judges with her skills and service. Jade isn’t the only award winning stylist at this salon. Rex is an award winning editorial stylist who worked with D Magazine, and Renee is an award winning editorial stylist and platform artist. These artists know hair, and they know how to make their clients feel fabulous and valued. JTB Bladeworks is a fullservice, unisex salon. Ser-

to name a few. It isn’t just the stylists that are diverse; the clientele includes men, women, young, mature, textured hair, and as many style aesthetics as clients. The products they use and sell are as luxurious as the talent and personality behind each chair: Wellness, AT Ease, Kenra, Pureology, and Chi are the products that grace their shelves and their clients’ hair and skin. The grand opening celebration will feature food and drinks, door prizes, discount cards for future services, and goody bags. They will also be offering full grooming services, so call 903-486-6086 now to schedule your appointment for more than just a hair cut.

One such blessing that has been mine is through the personal and the preaching of Dr. Robert G. Lee. He was the revered and remembered pastor of the Bellevue Baptist Church, Memphis, Tennessee. Sin leads to death – both physical and spiritual. Sin is a fatal disease. My thought for you this week is “When Sin is Finished.” In light of the severity of the sin problem, may I ask the question, “How do we remove sin from our lives?” The answer: We can’t, but God can. 5/7/19 passed. 8 Fire Chief Scott Ridling gave the EMS Profit and Loss Report for June of 2020, noting that run call volume has increased to an average of 11 calls per day. That number was unusually low during the Covid-19 shutdowns as people were afraid to leave their homes, even for medical attention, and the Chief is relieved more people are now calling when they need help. The run increase has led to better revenue, and his team is fully staffed. Judge Moore asked how many calls come from outside Bonham, and Chief Ridling estimated the number is about one-third of the call volume, though he won’t have a more accurate estimate until the new software is installed.

9 Judge Moore invited Tax Assessor-Collector Gail Young to speak about approving Collection of Optional Fees, Chapter 502.401 and 502.403 of the Transportation Code, for Calendar Year 2021 and to complete the Imposition of Optional Fees form to be returned to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. She explained this is a $10 Road and Bridge fee to be collected, and Commissioners must decide if they would like to pay the fee at the same rate as last year, which is the maximum amount that can be paid, or if they would like to change the rate. A motion to approve the fee at the same rate as last year passed. 10 Tax Assessor-Collector Gail Young explained forms would need to be signed to ap-

The regular meeting of the Fannin County Commissioners Court was called to order Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at 9:00 a.m. by County Judge Randy Moore at Bonham City Hall and via teleconference. Judge Moore established quorum; all Commissioners were present. County Treasurer David Woodson gave the invocation. Major James Manis and District Clerk Nancy Young led the pledges. There were no introductions. 5 Public Forum: One citizen conveyed the concern of residents in northern Fannin County, including areas such as Telephone, who are without reliable cell service and cannot make calls in emergencies. They would appre-

ciate efforts by the Commissioners Court to address this. 6 Judge Moore reported the updated number of total cases of Covid-19 in Fannin County, according to the DSHS website, which comes to 186 cases, with 7 fatalities and 22 still active. He was optimistic noting that this number is much smaller than that of nearby counties. Judge Moore encouraged church-goers to have their fellowships join in prayer for the county and nation, and believes it best to follow the order to wear masks. A motion to extend the Fannin County Declaration of Disaster Proclamation for Covid-19 one week passed. 7 A motion to extend the Covid-19 Response and Continuity of Operations Plan for Fannin County one week

School Supply Drive Thru Giveaway

Press Release - Donations are still needed for the 24th annual School Supply Drive hosted by the Fannin County Children’s Center. With local school districts planning for in-person school as one of the options starting in August, the Children’s Center is moving forward with plans to giveaway free school supplies on Saturday, August 8 from 9 am to 2 pm. Because of COVID-19, the event will look a little different than in year’s past. The give away will be a drivethru event, where families will pull up in their vehicles in front of the center, staff will gather basic information and supplies will be provided without the families having to get out of their cars. The line will go from east to west on Fifth Street, in front of the Children’s Center at 112 W. 5th Street in Bonham. Cars should get in line going south on Main street, turning right on Fifth Street. A drawing will soon be posted on the

Center’s website and social media sites. With this giveaway event coming up really soon, the center is seeking donations to make this effort possible. “As always, every contribution is appreciated and needed” said Sandy Barber, Executive Director of the Children’s Center. The center is now accepting paper, notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, backpacks and other school supplies. Barber said, “Donors can also donate cash and leave the shopping to us. We will use it to buy what is most needed and we will stretch the donation farther by using our taxexempt status when making the purchases.” In all, the agency has given out free school supplies to more than 10,000 students in the last 23 years. Organizers expect to serve 500-700 students again this year. This effort depends on contributions from many different individuals, churches, businesses and other local organizations.

Items needed include: notebook paper, pens, pencils, three-ring notebooks, folders with and without brads, spiral notebooks, scissors, markers, crayons, red pens and pencils, highlighters, glue sticks, glue in bottles, erasers, backpacks, construction paper, manilla paper, watercolor paints, pencil boxes and pencil bags. Contributions can be delivered to the center at 112 West Fifth Street, Bonham, TX anytime they are open from Monday – Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Checks can be made out to FCCC and should include a brief notation that the gift is for school supplies. Donations can also be made online at www.fanninccc.org. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowable by law. Organizers request that contributions arrive as soon as possible to allow time for organization and preparations. For more information, call (903) 583-4339 or go to www.fanninccc.org.

COOKING IN FANNIN COUNTY

by Tommie Sue Turner

There’s nothing better than a good helping of fried okra. I’ve always fried okra the same way my mom did, with just salt and pepper and cornmeal. I think this recipe will be my new way of cooking okra except for the red pepper. Tom is from Georgia, and he still can’t tolerate our good peppers. I sure hope you will give this one a try.

THE ROCK OF SEPARATION

In the Book of 1 Samuel, it is recorded that King David was running from his enemy, Saul. Saul and his army were closing in on David and his band of men. There was no way of escape except for a ROCK – a cliff that is named the ROCK OF SEPARATION.“Saul went along one side of the mountain and David and his men went along the other side…Therefore, that place was named the ROCK OF SEPARATION.” I Samuel 23:26,28. David and his men were protected from their enemies by THE ROCK OF SEPARATION. Fast forward to Matthew 16. JESUS asked His disciples – “Who do you think I Am?” “Some say”, they answered, “that you are John the Baptist, some say you are one of the prophets.” Jesus was not getting an answer, so He asked a different way, “BUT YOU, who do YOU say I am?” Peter’s answer pierced the looming silence as he spoke – “YOU ARE THE MESSIAH – THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD.” “You”, Jesus said, “are blessed because My Father in Heaven has revealed this truth to you.” Matthew 16:17. At that moment, Jesus changed Peter’s name from Simon to Peter – meaning ROCK. Peter’s confession hid him in the Rock of Salvation. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and truly believe that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9. JESUS IS THE ROCK OF GOD’S SALVATION FOR ALL WHO WILL BELIEVE. SO WHO IS THE ROCK OF SEPARATION? Jesus separates us from the world. When we asked Jesus to take our life, He gave us His life and separated us from death which encompasses this world. “The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away; but those who do the will of God live forever.” 1 John 2:17. I admit that observing the strange phenomenon during this pandemic has been perplexing. Watching as our society and that of the entire world separated by distance, masks, relegated to their homes without human interaction has been distressing. Watching those in nursing facilities succumb to loneliness and despair is heart-breaking. Are we watching the physical manifestation of a spiritual reality? I think So. JESUS IS COMING BACK! HE IS COMING FOR HIS OWN, AND HE IS SEPARATING US. “Before Him all the nations will be gathered, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” Matthew 25:32 Jesus separates us from fear. Jesus told us that fearful times would precede HIS return to earth. “People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world.” Luke 21:26 “But”, He said, “YOU don’t be afraid. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” Luke 21:38. “So also, when you see all these things, you will know that He is near, right at the door.” Matthew 24:33. The Door is rattling with the Wind of His coming. Sadly, it is estimated from polling that at least 50% of those who claim to be Christians do not believe Jesus will return as He said He would. Over 30% of pastors say they do not preach or teach prophecy in their churches. I had a man just a few weeks ago tell me that his Bible Study teacher told him to avoid Revelation. He said he only read the red letters in the Bible. When I told him that there were plenty of “red letters” in Revelation, he changed the subject. No wonder there is hopelessness and despair. If we do not believe JESUS is coming back – as He said He would – to fulfill the covenant He made with us, we are of all people most hopeless. Jesus is the Great Divider. Jesus told his disciples they had a misperception of Him. “Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? NO”, I tell you, “but division.” Luke 12:51. In the opening verses of Matthew 25, after telling His disciples the signs that will precede His coming, He tells us of a Bridegroom. The Bridegroom made a covenant with His ladies-in-waiting that He was going away to prepare a place for them. But He would be back for them! {the way things were done in the culture of that day.} There were 10 waiting, but 5 became restless and began to be involved with the things of the life they once knew; or perhaps they were lured by the enticing changes in the world. Only 5 remained faithful to His promised return. They prepared to meet their Bridegroom at such a time that He would fulfill His vow to them, and they would fulfill their vow to Him. When He did return and found the five waiting, He took them to Himself. The five who were about the business of the world realized He had come back as He said He would. When they scurried back and tried to go with Him, He answered them, “Truly I say to you, I do not know you.” Matthew 25:12. If we refuse Him on this earth, He will not know us when He returns. In Revelations 18:4, He pleads with us, “Come out of her [Babylon, the unfaithful world], My people, so that you will not share in her sins or contract any of her plagues.” He separates us to protect us and asks that we separate ourselves. He has a great inheritance for us, but we cannot have it both ways. There is a Crown of Righteousness waiting for all those who long for His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8 Signed: Teri Sheddy

But over the last 2 years together, they have evolved the band into a true tribute of the heyday 70’s and 80’s Fleetwood Mac show, complete with costumes, characters and chemistry. Lori Carlyle, the Stevie Nicks of the band, does

Stevie’s witchy, mysterious persona and vocals. Courtney Haines does a perfect impression of Christine McVie with her on-point keyboard playing, soothing vocals, and in-character British accent. Lance List nails the Lyndsey Buckingham role with his intricate finger-rolling style and high-range lead vocals. Bob Baldwin (John McVie) and Tom Thornton (Mick Fleetwood) round out the group to provide that thunderous rhythm section so important to the band’s sound. Together, the band pulls off the funky vibe and multi-part harmony vocals of one of the greatest bands of all time. They have recently added a set to their show that is just the Rumours album in it’s entirety, start-to-finish, which has been a big hit with their following. Fleetwood X has played most of the large rooms in DFW, including Gas Monkey Bar & Grill and

the Box Garden at Legacy Hall. Look for them coming to the Powder Creek Pavillion on August 7th.

Bonham’s Film Friendly Texas Certified Community Team Members, Bedco Executive Director Stephen Filipowicz, Bonham City Manager Sean Pate, Bedco Direcor Lee Ellis, Bedco President Emily Porter Press Release - Local officials echoed the exciting news from Governor Abbott that Bonham has been designated a Film Friendly Texas certified community by the Texas Film Commission. Such designation is reserved for those 140+ Texas communities that successfully complete all program training and documentation requirements. The designation serves as a signal to film industry location scouts and site selectors that the city is receptive to accommodating on-location filming within their jurisdiction.

Bonham Mayor Roy Floyd welcomed the designation and heartily commended all those local volunteers and staff that participated in this successful endeavor. The Mayor observed that “this effort was sparked more than ten years ago by Bonham tourism advocates like Emily Porter, Glenn Taylor and other that shared the vision of showcasing our many Bonham attributes to film industry scouts looking for authentic locations in genuine ‘small town’ communities BEDCo identified ‘on location

Filipowicz to update and ‘Bonham-ize’ sample ‘Film Friendly Texas’ policy guidelines shared at the workshop by the Texas Film Commission. In February the City Council unanimously adopted a supporting Resolution that included administratively enforceable guidelines for On Location Filming in Bonham. BEDCo also commissioned local photographer Allen Rich to build the high quality-high reso-

lution photographic portfolio of publicly accessible sites; an essential component of Bonham’s ‘Film Friendly Texas’ certification packet. Filipowicz noted that local property owner can also nominate their properties to supplement Bonham’s photo portfolio. He stressed the advice of Texas Film Commission’s ‘Kim LeBlanc, Production & Community Relations Specialist to “encour-

age residential and local business owners alike in Bonham to submit high resolution, high quality photos of their properties for inclusion in our office’s locations database as well. That can be accomplished by completing the online form on the Texas Film Commission’s webpage (BEDCo will also add a direct link in the coming days!): https://gov.texas.gov/film/page/ your_property_in_production: For additional information feel free to contact Steve Filipowicz at City Hall 903.583.7555.

Home Country: Slim Randles

There is in the splashing of the creek a great spray of diamonds. As each youngster sails like an astronaut out on the tire swing, then releases the hold on the earth to flail, suspended in time and space for that brief second or two, there is a timelessness, a postponement of all things evil and destructive, an affirmation of joy. The swimming hole in Lewis Creek has been there since Indian times, of course, and the tire swing was probably preceded by simply a rope with knots in it. It is one of the summer lodestones of our existence. Each summer we have to make our pilgrimage in the hot sun to the hole below the little waterfall, to the place were Lewis Creek widens and deepens for the benefit of hot, dry people before becoming just a creek again. And in this widening of the creek, this sacred place in our summer lives, we also play witness to the passage of years. Across the creek from the tree with the tire swing, the gravelly bottom extends gently with almost no current for ten feet or so. This is the baby beach, where squealing tots are allowed to cool off without benefit (or hindrance) of any more covering than

PAULINE OWEN DAVIS Pauline Owen Davis was born August 12, 1928 to Paul Lindsey and Mamie Pickens Owen at Ely, Texas. She passed away peacefully at her home in Sherman, Texas on July 27, 2020 at the age of 91 years. She married N.H. Davis on May 4th 1996 in Bonham, Texas. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, Lawrence R. Owen,

Clyde R. Owen, Troy P. Owen. Pauline was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Bonham, Texas. She spent most of her life in Dallas, Texas. She retired from AT&T Telephone Company. Many years in the Yellow Pages Advertising Department, for several years she was a member of the “The Bell Telephone Singers Grays” in Dallas, Texas. Pauline (Polly) will be missed by her relatives and friends. Private Graveside Service was held at 11AM Monday, August 3, 2020 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Whitewright, Texas. Pastor Wally Butts officiated. Arrangements are with Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, Whitewright, Texas. An online registry may be signed at www.tjmfuneral.com

the smiles of their parents. As the children grow, they venture farther out into the current of the creek and test their strength against the forces of nature. By the time a youngster is eight or ten, the seduction of the tire swing becomes overwhelming and the flailing of the arms and legs against the blue of the sky begin. Later still, when gangliness becomes fluidity and sleekness, and we want to make catlike moves to attract the opposite sex, the tire is used as a swinging platform for exquisite dives into the deep part of the creek where the big trout lie in cold holes. And as we age, and we watch our children come to love the hole in Lewis Creek, and as we sip lemonade in the shade as our grandchildren work their ways up the swimming hole chain of life, we can look at the splashing of the creek and see, with each sleek dive, with each laughing bellyflop, the diamonds of the creek sent skyward, and the laughter stays with us and keeps us strong and makes us feel rich, and fortunate. It is unnecessary to say the hole in Lewis Creek is an important part of our lives, because it, along with so many other treasures of the years, really is our lives.

A motion to approve the continuation of the Program with the same staff as last year passed. 11 A motion to approve the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) opening their office in Bonham Saturday, August 8, and August 22, 2020, and to require DPS employees to clean and sanitize before leaving passed. Judge Moore noted that though DPS will see visitors by appointment only, these sessions as approved by the Commissioners Court are helping them to catch up on overflow and run more smoothly. 12 Judge Moore read the Memorandum of Understanding between Fannin County and Workforce Solutions Texoma (WST), which intends to maximize the use of the public property for citizens by cooperating with needed state agencies. WST will occupy the building at 1205 East Sam Rayburn Drive beginning March 15, 2020, through midnight on March 14, 2025, and will be responsible for paying all utilities and maintenance for the property. Fannin County will pay insurance. A motion to approve the Memorandum passed. 13 Purchasing Agent Michelle Case spoke on the CARES Act funding, noting that she has communicated with Herb Bristow over the spreadsheet she compiled of requested equipment from County departments, and most will fall under the 75% requirement of being directly related to Covid-19. Some items Mr. Bristow did not feel were justified within the limits of the funding, such as the iJuror software, which has an annual cost. Mr. Bristow asked for a description of how each requested to purchase will be used regarding the virus, and when the time comes he will help Michelle Case file

the request. Purchasing Agent Case gave an update on buying a machine that can quickly and accurately test for Covid-19. No machine will be available for purchase before September or October, but once the request for CARES Act funding is approved, the order should be placed so the County may be put on a waiting list. Judge Moore considered this item discussion only and passed on it until the next regular meeting. 14 Judge Moore presented the 2020/2021Proposed Budget for Fannin County to the Commissioners Court. The Proposed Budget must be filed by the end of the month, but is only a starting point, and is based on the current tax rate of 0.589. Judge Moore explained the expected income from the current tax rate is $12,316,886.89, while expenses in the budget, after cutting as much as possible, $12,840,467.18, which is a difference of $522,580.29. He noted that two years ago, $2.1 million was taken out of the County reserves, while last year this amount was cut to $1.26 million out of reserves. The goal for this budget cycle was to take only $500,000 out of reserves. Judge Moore assured residents that he wishes the County could afford to be more generous, then laid out proposed changes to make this next budget plan work, including no pay increases for County employees (Judge Moore noted the new health benefits package with a 3% cost increase would compensate for this cut); removal of all cell phones; reduction in office equipment for all offices to $200, with additional funds possible upon request and review; reduction in computer equipment budget for all departments, with requests submitted to IT department; reduction in travel expenses in all departments; reduction in Sheriff’s budget by 1 car; and reduction in force, which could include removing 1 fulltime assistant Treasurer posi-

tion, 1 full-time Justice of the Peace #1 position, 1 full-time District Clerk position, 2 parttime District Clerk positions, 1 part-time position in the Tax Assessor-Collector office, as well as 1 full-time janitor and 1 part-time janitor positions. Judge Moore also suggested having the remaining janitors clean three days per week instead of five, which could save an additional $10,000. The Proposed Budget will be posted on the County website, and the Commissioners Court will begin working on adjusting it from there. Judge Moore stated some of the major drains on the budget that have led to these proposed cuts include overcrowding in the jail and Covid-19. Judge Moore continued to propose ways to lower costs at the detention center, including reducing detention days by asking Judges to put more offenders on bond and reducing employees, reducing health benefits, pay increases, travel, supplies, and other expenses. A final option would be to raise the tax rate. Judge Moore reiterated this proposed budget is only a beginning. Commissioner Magness commented that everyone in the County will have to stick together and make some cuts to make the budget work. Commissioner Whitlock disagreed with eliminating pay increases, because they were intended, when introduced, to be a promised replacement for longevity checks. He also stated he receives far too many calls on his work cell to reasonably combine it with his personal cell. Commissioner

Whitlock commented many offices cannot function properly if County employees are laid off as Judge Moore laid out, and that with the spread of Covid-19, janitorial services are more critical than ever. Commissioner Self determined the proposed budget need not be adopted, as long as it is presented by Judge Moore and filed by the end of the month. Judge Moore expects budget meetings will continue every week. Tax Assessor-Collector Gail Young commented that she had believed the proposed budget to have more transparency, but was unable to obtain a copy when requested. She questioned how the offices with proposed personnel cuts were selected and made her case that her office sees the most civilian traffic, which she expects to grow with the population and commerce as the new lake constructions are completed. Commissioner Lackey clarified Judge Moore’s statement that two years ago, the County budget relied upon $2 million out of reserved funds didn’t reflect the fact that not all of the $2 million was used, though it was all budgeted. He commented that sales tax revenue is going up, and the County receives close to $1 million more than in previous years. Commissioner Lackey believes the upward trajectory of the County will make layoffs unnecessary. He stated that “if we lay off people, it’s this Commissioners Court’s fault,” and no one else, person or pandemic, is to blame. He stood strongly against layoffs and pushed for

well. Most managed Bermuda grass hay meadows produced two cuttings so far. Livestock were in good condition. Springborn calves were doing well. There were isolated reports of armyworms, but grasshoppers were worse than normal in a few areas. Feral hogs were active. CENTRAL Some rain helped soil moisture levels, but more rain was needed, especially in drier areas. Weather continued to be hot and humid, but most pastures were green and in good condition overall. Some crops and pastures were burning up. Cattle remained in good condition. Many producers put up some hay throughout the season, and stock tanks looked good. Landscape plants were showing signs of heat stress. Cotton looked good, and some fields were in the boll split stage. Fusarium root rot was developing in some cotton under dry conditions but was not widespread. Hot, dry conditions hastened corn maturity. Corn and sorghum silage harvests continued. Grain corn harvest began, and yields were good, but prices were low. Sorghum harvest also began. Sugarcane aphids were present in several fields.

Game Warden Field Notes The Other Side of Nowhere A Big Bend Ranch State Park Police Officer and a Presidio County game warden were patrolling River Road at night through Big Bend Ranch State Park when the officers noticed a car parked in the Closed Canyon Trail parking lot after the park closed. In the car, they saw a park pass for that day, a car rental agreement, a jug of water and snacks, but the driver was nowhere to be found. The Closed Canyon Trail is short and stops at the Rio Grande after several steep pour offs. The last pour off is about 60-feet tall. The officers hiked the trail in the dark and far as they could safely go and called out for anyone still down there with no luck. The next morning, another park police officer was informed about a possible lost hiker. He checked the parking lot and saw that the car was still parked there undisturbed. The three officers headed back to the Closed Canyon Trail that afternoon with rappelling equipment to search farther down the trail. When they reached the first of the three steep pour offs, the officer called out for the hiker who excitedly responded for help. The park police officer was able to rappel down to the hiker who had descended all the pour offs and was at the riverbank. When they reached him, the hiker was dehydrated, exhausted and had injured his ankle. The hiker told the officers that he had gone down the trail alone in the afternoon, fell into a deep-water hole and was unable to climb out. Panicked, he decided to continue down the trail thinking it would lead him back to the parking lot. Temperatures that day were around 106 degrees and he drank river water to try to keep hydrated. He hiked along the riverbank but was unable to navigate the steep canyon walls of Colorado Canyon. The officers requested a helicopter to help extract the hiker, but due to bad weather it wasn’t available until the next morning. So, with the help of an additional game warden, two state park rangers, a U.S. Border Patrol agent and a Presidio County Sherriff’s Deputy, the team of officers were able to assist the hiker to climb back over the pour offs and navigate the rest of the trail back to his car. Presidio and Terlingua Emergency Medical Services arrived and gave the hiker medical care and he was then taken to the local hospital for further treatment.

Unsynchronized Swimmers A Stephens County game warden received a 911 call from local dispatch involving four people who were stranded in the middle of the Hubbard Creek Reservoir and their boat had washed ashore. The caller was in the boat but was unable to get it started to reach the stranded swimmers. The caller had never been on

3

the lake before and did not know where she was to give directions to the warden. One of the occupants had gotten into the water while the boat was floating in the middle of the lake to swim without a life jacket and the boat floated too far away for her to reach. Then, her husband, unable to crank the boat, jumped in the water and swam to her with a small ring buoy. The boat continued to float further away when another occupant on board saw the couple struggling in the water and swam out to them to assist with no lifejacket. By the time he reached them, the boat had tripled in distance from the original swimmer. A fourth occupant from the boat decided to swim out to the three simmers trying to stay afloat with life jackets for them, however, the boat was now about 350 yards away and he was unable to reach them. When the warden arrived, he was able to get the location of the boat and swimmers thanks to landmarks on the lake. The boat was located aground near an island and the three stranded swimmers were about 450 yards away. The swimmers were exhausted and panicked, but all accounted for. Once they were on the

boat, they found the fourth swimmer who had multiple lifejackets attached to him but had exhausted himself trying to get to his friends. Everyone in the water was worn out and frightened, but safe and refused medical attention. Once they were accounted for, the warden helped them get their boat back to where they had launched.

July 23, 2020 | Bonham, Texas AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the City of Bonham, having completed the multistep training and certification process, has been designated a Film Friendly Texas community by the Texas Film Commission, which helps to grow local jobs and local economies by promoting the Lone Star State as the premier desti-

nation for film, television, commercial, animation, visual effects and video game production. “I congratulate the City of Bonham on earning the Film Friendly Texas designation,” said Governor Abbott. “As our focus is on safely and strategically reopening and revitalizing all aspects of the Lone Star State—work, school, entertainment and culture—Texas is committed to working alongside our com-

munities to ensure they have the knowledge and tools needed. Through the Film Friendly Texas training and certification process, communities large and small are readied to help match local businesses with productionrelated needs, creating jobs for Texas-based crew members and local residents as well as spurring on-site spending at local small businesses. And I am proud of all that the Texas Film Commission has accomplished in helping communities like Bonham begin to open their economy.” The City of Bonham joins more than 140 Film Friendly Texas communities that receive ongoing training and guidance from the Texas Film Commission on media industry standards, best practices and how to effectively accommodate onlocation filming activity in their community. The Texas Film Commis-

sion in the Office of the Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Division has attracted $1.5 billion in local spending and created more than 154,000 production jobs across the state from 2007 to 2019. As media production opens in Texas, compliance with state and local safety protocols is key to keeping crews and communities safe. More information on safety guidelines and resources can be found at gov.texas.gov/film/ coronavirus. The Pledge of Allegiance to the Texas Flag “Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.”

Cassidy’s Next Challenge: 6/9/20at Southern Nazarene University DC’s Herron to extend hoops days

By Rich Hilliard

DODD CITY -- Two years ago, Cassidy Herron faced a challenge. She changed basketball teams -- midway through high school. Herron had been successful at Class 2A Celeste, earning notoriety -- all-district newcomer of the year and a first-team selection -as the Lady Blue Devils each season reached the bi-district round. However, coming to 1A Dodd City represented playing at a different level. The Lady Hornets had quickly elevated during the 2010s decade: consistent area finalist to regional tournament regular to state title contender. Dodd City had finished the previous two seasons second to only one team in 1A -- perennial champion Nazareth -- with trips to the state championship game. Herron handled the challenge, helped Dodd City maintain its status -- and earned all-region and all-state notoriety to boot.

By Rich Hilliard Volleyball season will commence on Aug. 3 for now six schools in Fannin County. In Ivanhoe, Class 2A Sam Rayburn will make its first foray into varsity play, during the debut of head coach John Folse. Last season, Sam Rayburn fielded seventh and eighth grade teams and competed in junior-high District 12-2A play in its inaugural year to

have the sport. Conversely, 3A Bonham will continue its long history in the sport -- coming off its best season in 11 years. In 2019, the senior-laden Lady Warriors reached the regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2008. Michelle Rodriguez returns for the fourth year of her second stint as head coach at Bonham, which last fall qualified for its second-straight postseason -- its first consec-

utive trips since 2010-14 -- as the 10-3A runner-up to statefinalist Van Alstyne, now a 4A school. Meanwhile, 1A Dodd City has had a relatively shorter history in volleyball -- but has a longer playoffs pedigree. The Lady Hornets enter the season already assured of their 26th postseason in the last 31 years, as head coach Alex Stephenson is back for a sixth-straight season.

Last fall, Dodd City repeated as the 12-2A champion en route to a second-straight Region II-1A quarterfinal advance. The other three volleyball programs in Fannin -- Savoy, Leonard and Trenton -- begin the season on five-year postseason streaks. As again one of only two 1A teams in its district, Savoy advanced to a fifth-consecutive postseason and arearound trip in the sport in 2019

-- and, like Dodd City, starts the season assured of another playoffs advance. Marci Streetman now takes the helm at Savoy, which last fall qualified again for the playoffs as 12-2A’s No. 2 seed to the 1A postseason. Leonard in 2019 made its fifth-consecutive and overall postseason under head coach Lisa Davis. The Lady Tigers advanced via the No. 3 district seed to the playoffs following a three-team 10-3A

third-place tiebreaker playin. Before Davis’ arrival in 2013, Leonard had never made the postseason in volleyball. Trenton, via a bi-district advance in 2019, also made its fifth-consecutive postseason appearance. The Lady Tigers qualified as 12-2A’s No. 3 seed to the 2A playoffs, in Ashley Anderson’s inaugural season as head coach of the sport at her alma mater.

Be Safe. Drive Smart!

Press Release - TxDOT offers tips to help drivers navigate work zones on state highways, especially I-35. At any given time, the Texas Department of Transportation has as many as 3,000 active work zones on the 80,000 miles of roadway it maintains across the state. I-35 is a major transportation artery and one of the largest active work zones in Texas. In 2019, a total of 20,488 traffic crashes occurred along the I-35 corridor, resulting in 141 deaths and 523 serious injuries. As the summer travel season continues, TxDOT encourages all motorists to make sure they take precautions when driving on I-35, especially through construction and maintenance areas.

TxDOT offers the following tips to help motorists stay safe this summer when traveling the state’s highways. Be safe as you navigate through a work zone. ·Slow down and always follow the posted speed limit. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones when workers are present. ·Pay attention. Avoid distractions, keep your mind on the road and put your phone away ·Watch out for road crews. The only protective gear they wear is a vest, a hardhat and safety boots. Their bodies are no match for your vehicle. ·Don’t tailgate. Give yourself room to stop in a hurry if you have to. Rear-end collisions are the most common type of work zone crash.

·Allow extra time. Road construction slows things down. Count on it, and plan for it. ·Check DriveTexas.org before hitting the road. The website contains information about highway and road conditions throughout the state. “Move over or slow down.” It’s the law. ·When approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, TxDOT vehicle, tow truck or utility vehicle with flashing blue or amber lights on the side of the road, drivers must move over a lane or reduce their speed to 20 mph below the posted speed limit. ·Violations of the law can result in a fine of up to $2,000. “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel such as wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Nov. 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways.
