Speed Remains Top Contributing Factor In Texas Crashes

TxDOT partnering with law enforcement to urge drivers to slow down AUSTIN – Drivers continue to choose to go too fast on Texas roads, making speed the number one contributing factor in traffic crashes. That’s why TxDOT is partnering with law enforcement on the “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign to urge motorists to slow down.

Last year, a third of the people killed on the road were in a crash that involved speed. This translates to 1,469 lives that were lost on Texas roads in speed-related crashes.

“Getting to your destination

$75.00

two or three minutes faster just isn’t worth the risk of a crash and causing harm to yourself or others,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Motorists who observe the speed limit and match their driving to road and weather conditions can help prevent crashes.”

more than following the speed limit. TxDOT has these safety tips for motorists:

● Match your speed to road conditions if there’s bad weather or you’re driving through a work zone.

● Contest dates, Aug. 7th - Aug. 11th,

● Winners will be drawn on August 11th at 1pm.

TxDOT’s speeding awareness campaign coincides with Operation Slowdown, a statewide, high-visibility speed enforcement period. From July 14 through July 30, Texas law enforcement agencies are stepping up efforts to get drivers to slow down or pay up.

● Enter only 1 time

● Slow down and allow for more distance to stop when traffic is heavy or roads are slick.

● Two winners will be drawn. Winnings to be picked up at The Fannin County Leader.

● Watch for road signs alerting you of reduced speed limits ahead.

What Matters to You

• Be attentively present with your family & friends.

• Be engaged in conversations without struggling to understand.

• Be appreciably attuned to the music playing or the sounds of nature.

• Be able to forget you’re even wearing a hearing aid (sounds are that natural!).

• Be comfortable with technology that allows remarkable customization.

• Be in charge of what you hear in noisy environments.

• Be free & connected to your life. Have fun!

Kenneth Sheppard, Jr. said that for some, deciding to have their hearing assessed takes something happening in their life, or with someone they love – or they miss something important. But, he said, even if you’ve adjusted to your hearing difficulty, it can be exhausting to have to read lips, filter background noise and try to understand multiple voices. “Of course you want to make educated decisions about something as important to your wellbeing as hearing aids,” said Jill Sheppard. “We invite you to come in and ask as many questions as you like. We’re here to help you hear well again.”

Balsamic Chicken Avocado

Caprese Salad is a quick and easy meal in a salad! This one sounds so good to have on a hot summer

BALSAMIC CHICKEN AVOCADO CAPRESE SALAD

Marinade/Dressing

¼ c. balsamic vinegar

2 Tbsp. olive oil

2 tsp. brown sugar

1 tsp. minced garlic

1 tsp. dried basil

1 tsp. salt

Salad:

4 chicken thigh fillets, skin removed (no bone)

5 c. Romaine lettuce washed and dried

1 avocado, sliced

1 c. cherry or grape tomatoes, sliced

½ c. mini mozzarella/ bocconcini cheese balls

¼ c. basil leaves, thinly sliced salt and pepper, to season

Whisk marinade ingredients together to combine. Place

chicken into a shallow dish: pour 4 Tbsp. of the dressing/ marinade onto the chicken and stir around to evenly coat chicken. Reserve the untouched marinade to use as a dressing. Heat about one teaspoon of oil in a large grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat and grill or sear chicken fillets on each side until golden, crispy and cooked through. Once chicken is cooked, set aside and allow to rest. Slice chicken into strips and prepare salad with lettuce, avocado slices, tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and chicken. Top with basil strips, drizzle with the remaining dressing. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

ENJOY!!

1948 Faculty

The 20th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham

The first school in Bonham for negro students was called the Bonham Colored School and is believed to have been built in the late 1800s. Official notice of the colored school is in the Bonham News, August 27, 1897. It was located on North Franklin Street. After that building burned, a new three room school was built on East 7th and Katy Blvd. The school went to the 9th grade. By 1920 the school offered 11 grades and expanded to 12 grades in 1940.

In 1928 a new brick building, funded in part by the Rosenwald Foundation, was built on Katy Blvd., which was called Washington Elementary School and High School. It had seven class rooms, two of which could be converted into an auditorium.

In the mid-1940s two frame portable buildings were add ed. In 1946 an airplane han gar was moved to the campus from Jones Field for a gym-

The

nasium, and in 1947 another frame building was added.

Only two school annuals have been found, although the Museum has a number of graduation announcements. The earliest school annual was in 1948 and the second was in 1963.

The last graduating class was in 1966. A Texas Historical Marker is at the former site of the school.

The school was the focal point for the black community. An annual picnic was held for many years on the grounds. Students were encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports.

THANK

Administrators and teachers were respected members of the black community.

Over the years a number of school reunions have been held. On July 7 & 8 of this year a reunion was held in Bonham. There was a great turnout. The earliest class represented was that of 1949, represented by Vera Ross. Many other classes were represented, and children and grandchildren of graduates also attended. This photo shows the graduates attending.

BlackJack

Is a 9-year-old Black Lab Mix missing from South Ravenna, Hwy 274 & CR 1400.

The collar reads:

BlackJack Sherman

Lolly & Pops

Pops 214-952-3815

Lolly 214-435-4897

He has been missing since July 9 but was spotted most recently on July 12 at the Horn Sand Plant on FM 1753. BlackJack weighs approximately 75lbs, has grey hairs near his nose & a white cross pattern on his chest. Also, his back paws have white tips on them, like he stepped in white paint. He is microchipped and is wearing a red reflective collar with a military styled dog tag that is branded to the collar.

We believe he is still hanging around the Sand Plants, staying cool and being fed, however, he is probably not getting close enough to the humans for them to read his tag. He has an injury to his left back hip area.

If you see him or maybe are the person feeding him, please give us a call.

We really miss our sweet boy!

Discussion regarding leasing county owned property at Highway 78 and US 82 – County Judge for Gayle Cooper, BEDCO Executive Director: BEDCO Executive Director Gayle Cooper spoke to explain the interest BEDCO has in the strip center property located adjacent to the property that is to become the new Fannin County Justice Center. Noting there is a potential buyer they have in mind (“a popular national brand company” that is interested in the purchase of 14,000 square feet of the property, not leasing, as the agenda wording indicated) she spoke on the mutual benefits of releasing the property for sale and noted how BEDCO would like the opportunity to market it. A discussion ensued with the query made “do we want anything out there that is not us”. The consensus was reached that more details would be needed before a decision on the matter could be made.

9. Discussion, consideration and action to approve payment of bills – County Judge for County Auditor: After Fannin County Audi-

12. Discussion, consideration and action to approve the use of private property on CR 3335 in Bonham as a staging area to repair the culvert on CR 3335; property owner has given their approval for this use – Commissioner Precinct 4: After Commissioner Kopf explained the reason this was placed on the agenda, Judge Cunningham stated the approval given by the property owner would need to be in writing. A motion was then made by Commissioner Kopf to approve with Commissioner Magness seconding the motion which passed.

13. City Manager Speaks To Kiwanis

As you drive around Bonham, do you wonder about all the clearing of land and streets that are blocked? Sean Pate, City Manager for the City of Bonham, spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Bonham, Texas, about what is going on about town.

The land being cleared to the north of Braum’s is being cleared for future development. No businesses are set to go there now.

In addition to the new Fix and Feed on north State Highway 121, which is now open, a Whataburger and a Starbucks will soon be in Bonham. These are popular places and easily accessed from Highway 82.

16. Discussion regarding Justice Center - County Judge: Judge Cunningham noted the court is moving forward to have things done as quickly and as cheaply as possible (to be utilitarian but not necessarily a work of art.)

17. Discussion regarding County Budget and revenue sources – County Judge: Ms. Whipple spoke on how the budget for next year is not looking bad and is nearing completion.

18. Discussion regarding water issues affecting Fannin County – County Judge: Judge Cunningham began a discussion by noting that he has asked Doug Janeway of Upper Trinity Regional Water District to get with Commissioner Kopf (representing Fannin County Water Authority) regarding future water issues. Citizen Thomas Turner of Bonham spoke to expound on the power that was given to the Fannin County Water Authority by the State and the importance of knowing what that power entails. After some discussion with it being noted that 3 members of that agency had passed away in recent years (Covid being named a factor with one of those deaths), Commissioner Kopf stated that efforts to reorganize the agency are underway with the need to obtain at least 3 new members. After Mr. Turner offered his assistance, Judge Cunningham spoke about the challenges that exist with focusing on getting the agency back in running and noted he was drafting Mr. Turner to assist in that area.

19. Discussion regarding Fannin County road issues - County Judge: Molly Hayes, a citizen of Tulip, spoke to commend Ken Fox of precinct one for millings he provided for CR 2037 that has helped with problems on the heavily traveled road. She asked those on the selection committee for the appoint-

These are the most common reasons for a skinny horse:

5/3/22

2023 Newsletter

COOL SCIENCE

We were always told to walk the horse to cool him out after exercise. A new study looked at 5 different ways to cool a horse after exercise in the summer.

1. Walking

2. Walking with fans

3. Walking with intermittent cold-water application

4. Walking with intermittent cold-water application and scraping off the water

5. Standing with continuous tap water (with a hose) application

The method that resulted in the fastest return to normal body temperature was standing with continuous tap water application for 2 minutes. Just walking took the longest (25 minutes) to bring the horse’s body temperature back to normal.

Electrolyte Supplements

For horses that are competing or sweat a lot, an electrolyte supplement may be needed. Electrolytes can be added to the water or the feed. If you add to the water, be sure to change the water every day or it will sour.

Be sure to also provide a bucket of plain water so the horse can choose which one it needs. A salt block or mineral block can be put out if the horse is in the pasture.

We will be stocking the electrolyte supplement, Balance, from Aurora pharmaceuticals.

Aurora states that Balance increases water consumption, reduces body temperature, helps metabolism, aids in quicker rebound after exercise, supports sweating, helps ulcer prevention by raising the stomach ph in addition to providing electrolytes. Dosage is 1 Tablespoon

The feeding schedule can be varied 1-2 hours except for equine athletes. Horses fed on a strict schedule can have anticipation behavior such as kicking, pacing, stall walking at feeding time. To prevent this, feed free choice hay in slow feed hay nets or feed hay first then feed grain in 1 hour.

2. Grain is the foundation of the equine diet. No. Forage, hay and pasture are. The horse’s digestive system is designed to forage/graze all the time. If grain is fed without enough forage in the intestine, the grain causes gas colic. The minimum amount of hay is 2% of the body weight/day, which equals 20lbs for a 1000 lb. horse. If feeding 5lb flakes of hay, that is 2-3 flakes am and pm.

3 Alfalfa is too rich for horses.

Alfalfa is hard on the kidneys

Alfalfa has more protein, digestible energy, and calcium than grass hay but is lower in sugar. The higher protein and calcium cause increased water intake & urine output. We have all been told to drink more water to keep the toxins flushed out and stay hydrated, the same goes for the horse.

4 Horses are skinny or fat due to the type of feed

It’s generally not the type of feed, but most often how much you feed. With Senior Feed, you have to feed double the amount because it is a complete feed providing the grain and hay to the horse. Because it is ½ roughage, you must feed 2 quart scoops twice a day to maintain the horse.

The obese horse often has metabolic problems due to the fat gene which we can test and treat.

a. Dental problems, especially long front teeth. Horses that need a bite alignment (trimming of the front teeth) often have no molar contact and cannot grind their feed. Sharp, missing, or damaged molar teeth can also affect weight.

b. Sand in the intestine. This interferes with digestion & absorption of nutrients.

c. Heart murmur. Murmurs are most often found in old horses.

d. Insufficient calories. The horse is not getting enough feed or pasture /hay to meet its needs.

5 Horses eat dirt out of boredom Deficiencies in minerals such as calcium, copper, iron, or vitamins can cause this behavior. Most horses eat dirt in the spring when returning to pasture after being on hay all winter. Foals sometimes eat dirt when they start to eat grass trying everything in their mouths.

6 Bran mash has a laxative effect and prevents colic Research has shown that bran does not have a laxative effect and doesn’t prevent colic. A probiotic added daily to the feed (such as Fastrack) does help prevent colic. Overfeeding of bran can lead to mineral imbalances due to its high phosphorus content.

7 Corn is a hot feed

A quart of corn weighs more than a quart of oats or pellets. When comparing the feeds, the additional calories provided by the corn often results in “hot” behavior. In terms of temperature, any metabolic warmth generated by corn is minimal and short lived. Hay lasts longer in terms of digestive time and calories.

The Stony Ground

for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ

Three of the four gospel accounts include the parable of the sower; Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Lord speaks this parable concerning the hearts of men. “Behold, a sower went forth to sow” (Matthew 13:3).

This is simply the scattering of seed. Christ said that “Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away” (Matthew 13:5-6).

Jesus explains the parable to help us understand spiritual truth. The seed is the ‘word

of God’ (Luke 8:11). They that are received in the ‘stony places’, ‘stony ground’, and ‘rock’, are they that ‘heareth the word’, and at once ‘with joy receiveth it’, ‘immediately receive it with gladness’, and ‘receive the word with joy’ (Matthew 13:20-21; Mark 4:16-17; Luke 8:13). However, these individuals “have no root in themselves” (Mark 4:17). When “tribulation or persecution ariseth” (Matthew 13:21), “when affliction or persecution ariseth” (Mark 4:17), and “in time of temptation” (Luke 8:13), they are ‘offended’, and ‘fall away’ (Mark 4:17; Luke 8:13).

Some are converted on an impulse. Emotions are stirred and they “immediately” receive the word with joy, which for a while believe, but they have no commitment and only

continue their Christianity for a while (Mark 4:16)

Some obey the gospel without counting the cost. It costs to put the kingdom first. Jesus said, “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). It costs to put God above everyone else. Christ said, “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:37).

Some obey without proper consideration for endurance. The Lord said “he that endureth to the end shall be saved” (Matthew 10:22).

As Christians, we must have a strong conviction in ‘the seed’, the Word of God. We must continue with the word for it to grow in us, so that we can become fruitful and “bring for fruit” for the Lord (Mark 4:20).

Sunday Morning Re-take “The Firm Foundation”

Hello everyone!

The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 3:10-11,

“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” This is the foundation that our nation was built upon. Sadly, like I’ve said before, America has gotten away from this. We desperately need revival in this great nation of ours! The only way that we can experience revival is to put our trust back in the Lord, and

Don't Like Religion?

get our focus back on Him, where it needs to be. Despite all the problems we face, God still has everything under control. We just need to trust Him.

This week I am once again reminded of this classic hymn, which was written in 1787.

“How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word! What more can be said than to you God hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?”

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,

upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.”

If you’re looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit us and be a part of our worship here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

DODD CITY, TEXAS 150 YEARS

After the deed was filed on 08 Sep 1873 creating Dodd City, Texas the town was owned by three groups: Edmund H & Elizabeth Dodd, Texas & Pacific Railway Company and the citizens of the new town. What citizens? The population of the town was ZERO, it was only a small piece of farm land, but that changed rapidly. The railroad was already laying track coming from Sherman, with no time to waste they started immediately building on the depot and preparing the 26 even* blocks they received

per the deed for $1.00 to be sold. This, in part was how the railroad raised funds for the project. Most likely, the same three groups worked together on building streets, drainage ditches, digging water wells, etc. Citizens of the surrounding communties were looking to relocate and take advantage of what a railroad town had to offer. *Correction in article #1-the T&P received 26 even blocks.

On a deed filed Dec 11th 1873 at the Fannin County clerks office, E.H. Dodd sold his son,

Louis “Tibb”, 13 of the odd blocks for $1.00 and his widowed son-in-law, Frank Stewart received 14 odd blocks for $2000. On the same day, another deed shows E.H. Dodd purchased back from Frank 13 lots for $500. At this point, the town had four real estate brokers with a big vision, but the population was still ZERO.

H.S. Thrall’s “A Pictorial History of Texas” 1879 page 779, shows that railroad bulding in Texas was a big deal from 1850s though the 1870s, so if a town was created or happened to be on a railroad route this was very benifical for the town and surrounding area.

Below are some updates of Dodd City & Stephensville (Lannius) growth through the early years:

The Galveston Daily News 8 Sep 1875: ”…Dodd City, situated six miles east of Bonham, on the Trans Continental Railroad is a new town, and situated in a very rich section of country…. Stephensville, two and a half miles north of Dodd City, is in a thickly settled community.

Mr. H.R. Stephens has a store in this community, and is an old and respectable citizen. There are many enterprising farmers living in this community, Good Schools, Masonic

Jan 1876: “Dodd City, Fannin county, had a grand ball the other night in the freight room of the depot and a number of young folks from Bonham attened.” Tommie Grisham Eaton told the authors stories of the dances that took place in the Texas Pacific Railroad Depot in the 1940s. She also told of her and her friends jumping on the train and riding it to Bonham as a teenager, watching a movie at the American Theater and returning on the

last train back to the Dodd City Depot.

On 9 Aug 1879, when the town voted to Incorparate there were at least 200 Souls in the orginial town plat.**p19

After the vote of 37 for 2 against, the size of the town increased to ONE SQUARE MILE which increased the population on the 1880 US

The total value of shipments in the last year by rail was over $146,000 of cotton, cotton seed, wool, corn, oats, hogs, flour, hides and furs. That is approximately $4,300,000 in todays value! This was not counting the exports by horse and wagons. The article states, Dodd City draws business from Bonham, Delta & Hunt counties, as well as across the Red River from the Indian Territory.

Fort Worth Daily Gazette 15 May 1884: The below clip describes the town and it’s citizens after ten years.

Dodd City, Texas online US Decennial Census shows growth has been up and down. Starting at ZERO in 1873, hit its peak in 1920 and in 2020 the population of 389 indicates an upward trend. Non-Friday varsity football action amongst games for Fannin teams

Some non-Friday varsity football games will be on tap for some Fannin County schools during 2023 slates.

Savoy will start its regular season at home on Thursday, Aug. 24, against Grayson Christian at 7:30 p.m. Savoy head coach Keith Hughes noted that a

helicopter will deliver the game ball.

Trenton in non-district action will play on Thursday, Sept. 7, at Detroit at 7:30 p.m.

Fannindel will have three home non-district games on days other than Fridays: Thursday, Sept. 7, against Denton Calvary at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 23, against Savoy at noon; and

Thursday, Oct. 12, against Prestonwood North at 7 p.m.

Leonard will complete District 8-3A-II action at 7:30 p.m. the last two Thursdays: hosting Class 3A-II State champion Gunter on Oct. 26 and playing on Nov. 2 at Bells.

Note: Schedules and scores for the six Fannin County varsity football

teams will again appear in the Fannin County Leader during the upcoming season. Numbers out for football (8/1): Bonham, 65 (26 freshmen); Honey Grove, 43 (12 juniors and 12 sophomores); Trenton, 43 (no class particularly larger than others); Fannindel, nine (five seniors).

2023 Leonard graduate Cavender to extend T&F days w/Midwestern St.

Abby Cavender equated a ubiquitous presence in Leonard athletics during her high school career.

Cavender's sports included volleyball, cross country, basketball, powerlifting, softball and track and field.

The 2023 Leonard graduate will extend her athletic career in the last one.

Cavender will compete for Midwestern State University's women's track and field team in Wichita Falls -- she equates the only young woman in her graduating class to extend

her athletics career beyond high school.

"I am so excited for her to have this opportunity to run at the next level," said Leonard head girls' track and field coach Rae Holden. "She really puts so much work into everything that she does, from multiple sports and her education.

"I think Abby will thrive at college because of her work ethic," said Holden, "and she hates the idea of not succeeding." Cavender, as a senior, advanced to the Region II3A Track and Field Girls'

Meet in the 200-meter dash, as a part of Leonard's girls' 4x200 and 4x400 relays and in the long jump, per a social media post by MSU. "Abby has grown in confidence on the track in the past year," said Holden. "She knows how hard you must work to be successful on the track.

"Abby was a great leader in the weightroom," he said, "and on the track, being our only senior to run."

Leonard's Abby Cavender leaps to contend for the ball on Dec. 13, 2022, during District 11-3A girls' basketball at Bonham.

New Cards' HFC Hughes hopeful heading into first season at Savoy

SAVOY -- Keith Hughes enters

the helm of the Class 1A-I Savoy football program with multiple thoughts.

"Honestly, I see what Savoy has been and what it ought to be," said Hughes on July 25. "But, at the same time, I'm really just trying to focus on the team.

"We have the boys to compete with most, but we have to show up every day and work harder than the others to have the success that we want," he said.

"That goes for us coaches as well. If we expect them to do it, why not us?

"The boys want to win, and that's a start. We seem to be a team that is under the radar for sure. We have no issue [with] being underestimated."

The Savoy position for Hughes equates a return to coaching six-man football.

"When I first looked at getting back to six-man football, it wasn't hard to see that there were opportunities all over our great state," said Hughes.

"But, I was looking for something very specific.

"I wanted a school where everyone was truly welcome," he said. "A school that may not have had recent successes in its program, but had the makings of a program ready to be challenged and built.

"I wanted a particular type of administration to work for, and I found that. I wanted a place where there were folks involved for decades within the community, and I found that. I wanted a community that God would be proud of, and I found that." Hughes brings coaching experience that has included stops in various parts of Texas.

"I have coached both eleven and six-man (mostly) football programs throughout the state," said Hughes. "I have been as far south as Nueces Canyon, north in Whitharral, west in Whiteface and east in Overton.

"I am beginning my 17th season," he said "and have reached the playoffs six times with four different

teams."

Hughes equates the third head football coach in as many seasons for Savoy, which committed to having a six-man program in 2012, fielding a varsity team every year since then

save in 2020.

Jacob Guzman in his lone season at Savoy in 2022 coached the Cardinals to a 4-6 overall record -including a 4-2 start -- and 0-3 mark in District 101A-I. It equated their most

wins in a single season since being 5-4 under Clay Wilson and a bidistrict finalist -- their last postseason trip, to date -in 2018. (Wilson oversaw the program during mostly successful seasons -- in the postseason every year but two from 2012-2019 -from its six-man inception at Savoy.)

"With little reason, the door was left open in Savoy," said Hughes. "I understand that coaches come and go at times, but that shouldn't deter or affect anything I do. Someone else's history is not my own, and I won't let it affect the way I coach in any way.

"My schemes are definitely a little more complex than what was here previously. Both offensively and defensively, there is a lot to learn and absorb by my kids," he said. "Fortunately, we started the process in the spring and have about two thirds of everything already installed.

"The kids are smart and pick up on things pretty easily. You can see it in their eyes, and it's going to

be a fun season."

Savoy will face the same slate of opponents this season, again vying for one of the two available postseason berths in 10-1A1 which includes Gilmer Union Hill: the reigning district champion and an 11-1 area finalist in 2022 and ranked No. 16 in 1A-I in the Top-25 preseason poll in the summer edition of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.

"Most teams were hit pretty hard with graduation this year," said Hughes. "But, that won't stop any of the teams in our district.

"Union Hill and Saint Jo are both very good teams, and Campbell has experienced some recent successes as well," he said.

"Union Hill and Saint Jo were our playoff qualifiers last year and probably expected to be so again. Campbell has had a recent coaching change, and that may affect their style a bit; they will always play extremely hard.

"I expect battles every week, no matter the teams."

Fannin County 336th District Court

I’m a conservative Republican, having spent the last 25 years as a licensed attorney in the State of Texas. During that time, I have prosecuted cases under municipal and state law and defended those accused of crimes ranging from minor traffic violations to capital murder. In addition, my experience also includes civil and family law and appellate court filings. I have also served in leadership roles in the criminal defense bar and served on boards related to indigent and mental health defense.

As both a sole practitioner and a partner in a small law firm, I am successfully managing a business and payroll. I earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of North Texas and my Juris Doctorate from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law.

My wife Katrina and I have 5 children and two grand children. We grew up in small towns in East Texas leading us to settle in Fannin County, just outside of Trenton. We regularly attend King’s Trail Cowboy Church in Whitewright.

I ask you for your vote and support in the Republican Primary for the Fannin County 336th District Court.

It is commonly believed that a child will tell everything about child abuse, but that is far from the truth. Trained personnel must work with the child to get disclosure. Should adults feel that a child

is being abused, the adult must contact the Children’s Center at 903.483.4339 or the child can place the call.

The 22nd in a series of Articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham

The citizens of Bonham have

always valued education, so it is not surprising that they have supported a public library.

The first public library was an outgrowth of the circulating library of the Current Literature Club, a women’s organization composed of twenty-five to thirty women who studied literature and the arts and initiated civic improvements. Funds were raised for a library which would be available to members ($1.00 a year). The Library opened in 1901 with a librarian. There were a number of fundraising activities to keep the library going.

The location moved after 1901, and in 1914 the Library was at 125 East Fifth Street.

In 1916 the Library was on the 3rd floor of the former Bonham Drug Company. A fire at this location in the early 1920’s seriously damaged the collection.

In 1926 the newly organized Tejas Delphian Club asked the Current Literature Club to join with it to get the Library going again. Fund-raising began again and a room on the 2nd floor of what became the Duke & Ayes store was secured. When this space became unavailable County Judge H. A. Spies offered an unused room on the third floor of the court house.

The Library remained in the court house until 1938, when Mayor Joe Hrdlicka proposed a plan to remodel a portion of the room between the city hall and the fire hall for the library.

The Library remained in the City Hall building from 1938 until 1959 when the building was torn down. The City had provided the room, paid utilities, and gave a small amount for support.

In 1959 Martin Halsell and his sister, Mrs. John Russell, proposed to give their parents’ home on East 9th Street, a spacious two-store brick house, as

a permanent library home to be maintained by the City. A referendum was called for June 15, 1959 to see if there was citizen support for the proposal.

The proposal was rejected by a vote of 438 for to 965 against.

As the City Hall was to be torn down, the Library was temporarily moved to the Burow building on North Main Street. Then Library found a home in the new City Hall, at Chestnut

and East 5th Street (now the Police Department) in 1962.

From the small collection of books in 1901 the Bonham Public Library has provided services to the community for over 120 years. It has expanded from a book lending library to a resource that provides a wide range of services to all ages.

Building maintenance and staff salaries are provided by the City. An active Library Board raises funds for books, materials and programs. Another source of funding is grants and donations, including the support of the Fair Miller Foundation.

The Bonham Public Library is a dynamic institution with a wonderful staff that provides Bonham citizens with many cultural and educational resources. Bonham residents are rightly proud of their Library.

COLE MARION CLIFTON

Cole Marion Clifton passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on July 31, 2023.

Cole was born to parents Walter and Dana Clifton on January 16, 1972 in Dallas, Texas. The family moved to Bonham, Texas when Cole was at the tender age of 4. Small town was at the heart of Cole. He was well known by all and never met a stranger. Cole loved his wife Sabrina dearly and his children and grandchildren were the loves of his life. Cole was a jack of all trades and a plumber by profession. When he was not with family you would find Cole working on the farm. He often took his beloved bride Sabrina on date night and this consisted of riding the golf cart and checking on the cows. Cole also enjoyed going to gun and classic car shows. Cole was a teacher at heart. If you didn’t know the answer or understand a problem, Cole could teach you. He will be forever remembered for his giving spirit, competitive game of chess, and love for his favorite dog, Blue Boy. Cole never gave up and fought cancer for 6 months with every bit of grit and determination he had.

Cole is preceded in death by father, Walter Clifton Sr., brothers, Walter Clifton Jr., Timothy Clifton and aunt, Beverly Wakefield. He is survived by wife, Sabrina Clifton, son, Peyton Clifton, daughters, Nicole Sergi (Von), Holly Meyer (Nick), Chaezeney Haefele (Lucas), Taylor Honeycutt (Kevin), mother, Dana Clifton, sister, Crystal Wrape (Scott), brother in law, Michael Granstaff, grandchildren, Emily Hashert, Zachary Meyer, Hollis Haefele, Arthur Honeycutt, nieces, Paige Granstaff, Gracie Granstaff, Izzy Granstaff, Madison Wrape, and Sarah Wrape. Week of August 2, 2023

Cooper GOOD. Water lightly stained; 87 degrees; 0.5 feet above pool. Crappie are excellent on structure with jigs. Catfish are excellent on cut shad. White bass are good on artificials. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 87 degrees; 1.62 feet below pool. Catfish are good on cut shad and bluegill in 1020 feet of water, or on baited holes in 5-15 feet of water. Catfish will relate to shade so target submerged bushes and overhanging trees hold channels as well. Bluegills are great on worms in 10-20 feet of water on brush piles, using a 2-4 pound line is imperative. Crappie will be slow until the water hits 80 degrees or less. Crappie can be caught in 10-25 feet on timber, brush, and rocky ledges. Bass bite for big fish is slow due to the heat.

Ray Roberts GOOD. Water is clear; 87 degrees; 0.66 feet below pool. Typical fishing patterns for the dog days of summer. White bass are good with more keeper sized fish in the schools. Crappie are fair on brush piles and trees in 20-25 feet of water using minnows, with many undersized catches. Bass are good with a sporadic topwater, but most catches on dropshots in 15-20 feet of water over main lake structures.

Catfish are fair.

Tawakoni GREAT. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 0.16 feet below pool. Fishing is in a solid summer pattern that should not change anytime soon. The striper and white bass bite is good. Fish have been schooling early in the morning and late in the evenings. The midday bite has been good on live bait on structures in 18-25 feet. Eater size catfish bite is about as good as it gets. Fishing is solid using prepared bait such as punch be in 25-35 feet. Crappie are fair with live minnows working best on brush piles, standing timber and bridge pilings in 18 feet. The largemouth bite has slowed down, but there is a daylight frog bite right now.

Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 85 degrees; 1.57 feet above pool. Striped bass are hit-or-miss while the water is turning and fish feed at night during the full moon. Look for fish are on the surface, then look for bigger fish beneath using slabs and topwaters. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striped bass are good on live shad, topwaters and slabs. Look for schooling fish along flats in 10-30 feet of water and in deep water along river channels. Stripers always feed into the wind, so get out in front of them and use electronics to locate bigger fish under the schooling size fish. Crappie are fair on hair jigs and minnows on brush in 12-15 feet of water. Using electronics to locate active fish and seeing a lot of fish uninterested in the bait. Catfish are fair on prepared baits, punch bait and cut shad. Fishing a reel or two off the bottom along rocky banks for channels and ledges for blues.

The man stood up and ran into the brush. Wardens coordinated with sheriff’s deputies and witnesses to identify the subject. When interviewed, the subject indicated that, after partaking in a couple of beers, he shot the deer illegally for food. The warden issued a citation and restitution fee. The deer was donated to the witnesses for food.

Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Rosita Creek Flats. Walking through the flats, the wardens located three adult males who displayed multiple anti-police tattoos and clothing. One of the individuals carried two rifles, an AK-47 and a .308 caliber, as well as paper targets. Some of the individuals were from out of state; the wardens additionally observed that their vehicle did not display a Texas OHV decal. Upon checking with the Potter County Sheriff’s Office, the wardens learned that one was a convicted felon with outstanding warrants for various charges. The wardens arrested the individual without incident. A National Park Service Ranger arrived on scene and issued a federal citation to the individual who had been illegally target shooting. The owner of the vehicle also received a citation for failing to display proper decals required by law.

Chronic Wasting Disease is a Real Threat to Texas Deer

TPWD Launches New Public Awareness Campaign to Help Protect Texas Deer from Fatal Disease

AUSTIN — This year, hunters in Texas will notice an increase in messaging about Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) and its impacts to the state as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) launches a new public awareness campaign.

The campaign aims to share information with hunters and the public about how they can help protect Texas deer and stop the spread of this deadly disease.

“Many have asked, ‘What is CWD?’” said TPWD Wildlife Division Director John Silovsky. “Our goal is to create a greater awareness of the presence and consequences of CWD on the Texas landscape.”

CWD is a highly transmissible, fatal neurological disease that effects species of cervids (members of the deer family), including whitetailed and mule deer. As the disease continues to spread through the native deer population, TPWD hopes Texans will be ever more vigilant. Proper carcass disposal and CWD testing for each harvest are the greatest contributions a hunter can make to prevent further spread of the disease and assist with necessary surveillance across the state.

“CWD isn’t a disease where people can afford to stick their heads in the sand,” said TPWD Big Game Program Director Alan Cain. “The outreach effort is meant to generate discussion, educate folks about the disease, current CWD regulations, and what we can do to manage the disease. We have an obligation to current and future generations of Texans to be good stewards of our native deer species.”

A recent study from the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute estimated that Texas hunters and landowners spend $4.3 billion a year in their pursuit of Texas white-tailed deer. The significance of CWD’s impact on Texas deer may not be recognized this hunting season or even the next. Left unmanaged or uncontained, the hunting heritage we cherish and opportunities for future generations could forever be diminished by CWD.

“Texans are still learning about CWD, but we know they love their state and its wildlife,” said Deputy Communications Director Cory Chandler. “This campaign will call on hunters, landowners and the public’s appreciation for Texas deer to build awareness about CWD, reinforce TPWD as a reliable resource, and build hunter participation in testing and proper carcass disposal.”

Over the next few months, when you see a CWD billboard or a sign when pumping gas, visit the TPWD website and learn how you can help. The message is clear: CWD is 100 percent fatal. We can all do our part to stop the spread to Texas’ native deer population.

NOTICE OF REQUEST FOR PUBLIC COMMENT ON FINAL REPORT

Recreational Use Attainability Analysis for Honey Grove Creek (0202L) in the Red River Basin

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has made available for public comment on the Recreational Use Attainability Analysis for Honey Grove Creek (0202L) in the Red River Basin, within Fannin County.

A use-attainability analysis (UAA) evaluates designated or presumed uses if there is reason to believe the standards for a water body are inappropriate due to local conditions. A Recreational Use-Attainability Analysis (RUAA) is a specific type of UAA that is conducted to evaluate and determine what category of recreational use is appropriate for a particular water body. RUAAs are typically site-specific studies that assess reasonably attainable recreational uses based on the physical and flow characteristics of a stream— such as water depth and persistence of flow. Supporting information, including surveys of individuals and organizations with firsthand knowledge of a water body, is also collected to assess historical and existing patterns of recreational use.

If you would like to comment on the report or have information on current or past recreation activities occurring on the water body, comments will be accepted until September 15, 2023. Please reference RUAA Honey Grove Creek with submitted comments. TCEQ will not issue a formal response to comments at this stage.

The reports are located on the TCEQ website at: https://www.tceq.texas.gov/waterquality/standards/ruaas

Comments can be submitted via email to Bonnie Evans at: Bonnie.Evans@tceq.texas.gov

or mailed to: Bonnie Evans, Water Quality Standards Group, MC-234, Water Quality Planning Division, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 13087, Austin TX 78711-3087

After the public comment period, TCEQ will consider these comments for the draft recommendation. There will be another comment period for the draft recommendation.

NORTH Pastures and rangeland were good to fair for most of the counties. Both subsoil and topsoil moisture were reported to be adequate to short for most of the counties. Temperatures remained in the triple digits over the past week and the region was in need of rain.

Grass stands were severely declining. Pastures were becoming a little stressed due to excessive heat. A few counties started cutting corn for silage and it was yielding well. Overall, the production looked good but needed rain soon. Harvest is expected in August.

Grasshopper populations

were extremely high and increasing. A good amount of hay was harvested in a few counties. No major insect or disease outbreaks occurred during these times. Livestock conditions were looking good and continuing to improve.

Prehistoric Grayson County presented by Dr. Wayne Meyer.

Grayson County is wellknown for its rich fossil deposits. In this talk, which Kim presented to the Grayson County Historical Society and to the Natural History Museum of Grayson County, we look at how Grayson County got to be such a rich depository and what species are most well-known. We also speculate on some other organisms that almost certainly were present, but which have not yet been found. Lastly, we discuss the end of the age of dinosaurs.

Kim Snipes was an adjunct lecturer and safety officer for the biology department at Austin College. She died of cancer in November 2022, five years after losing her vision. She continued to teach and serve students almost until the very end. Her husband, Wayne Meyer, will be presenting her talk in her memory.

Refuge Rocks for Kids:

Saturday August 19th at 10:00am to 11:30am. The Refuge Rocks presents Under the Prairie Sky

Did you know that the prairie once covered almost half of the United States? Travelers 200 years ago called it a “sea of grass” because the tall prairie grasses and wildflowers swayed in the breeze like the waves on the ocean. They said that you could see for miles in all directions. Stories were passed around that the grass was so tall in some places that it brushed their legs as they rode on their horses! Come out to the refuge on Saturday, August 19th and learn about our beautiful American prairie through the storytelling of an old Caddo Native American tale, crafts, a prairie investigation activity on the refuge and a fun Buffalo Stomp activity! Free program for ages 5 – 10. Registration required. https:// www.friendsofhagerman. com/event-5098390/Registration
