World War II Veteran Requests 100 Cards for 100th Birthday
BONHAM — Today, Veterans Land Board (VLB) Chairwoman Dawn Buckingham challenged the Bonham community and the State of Texas to show their support for U.S. Army Veteran and Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home resident Ethelyn Szad Bell on her 100th birthday. Mrs. Bell's centennial celebration will be on October 4th and she has requested to receive 100 cards for this wonderful milestone.
Mrs. Bell began her service in March of 1945 at the age of 21. After completing the Basic Training Course for Army Nurses, Mrs. Bell served with the Army Nurse Corps in the Philippines and Nagoya, Japan during World War II. During her time in the service, she rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant and was honorably discharged in July of 1946.
Recipe Sponsored by:
After her time serving in the U.S. Army, Mrs. Bell continued giving back to her community by working at the the Veterans Administration Hospital in McKinney, Texas. A blind date led to meeting her husband and fellow U.S. Army Veteran, Charles Bell. Together, they moved to Prosper, Texas where they raised a son and daughter. Mrs. Bell worked as a dedicated elementary school nurse in McKinney for many years until she retired at the age of 55.
Texans can show their support and help celebrate this momentous occasion by sending birthday cards to Mrs. Bell at the Clyde W. Cosper Texas State Veterans Home: Ethelyn Bell

Road Work updates for Week ending 9/8/2023
As Commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. With 192 miles of road to maintain in just precinct one, our team of six people is out every day working to make this happen. While you
may not see them on your road we want to assure you they are working and each week we will let you know what they accomplished the week before.
For the week ending September 8, 2023 the team was able to grade most every road south of Savoy that branches off of FM 1752 all the way down to Highway 11 and pot holes were filled on County Roads 1105, 1035, 1115, 1430, 1445, 1450, and 1451. In addition, the team finished brush cutting on CR 2615 and was able to remove
about 50% of the brush created. They also started brush cutting CR 2600 and were able to clean up two blind curves that were a major issue.
We have had many requests to mow the bar ditches due to the overgrown nature on many of the roads. We are working on this problem but have run into an issue whereby our one mower has some serious past maintenance problems that were not addressed and may not be salvageable at this point. We are in the process of trying
to buy a new tractor and mower that will be dedicated to just mowing the bar ditches.
You are welcome to call us with any concerns or areas that need attention within the precinct. Please understand though, the issues we are dealing with were not created in a day, week, or even a year and it will take a while to fix them.
Stop and thank our team members if you encounter them out on the roads as that goes a long way in helping reward them for a job well done.
Dale McQueen, Fannin County Commissioner, Precinct One

There is currently a campaign to increase awareness of the Jefferson Highway and secure route marking of the entire length of the highway. Bonham has joined this preservation movement and Bonham will be the first City in the great State of Texas to mark the historic route. We invite you to celebrate with us and recognize the Jefferson Highway to help to bring a greater awareness of this historically significant highway not only in Bonham, but the State of Texas, and the nation.
The festivities will kick off with a Meet & Greet at the Bonham Visitor Center located at 327 N. Main St. Bonham, TX 75418 on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 4:30pm. Enjoy opening remarks by Bonham’s Mayor, H.L. Compton & a presentation by Roger Bell, the President of the Jefferson Highway Association. The celebration will continue on Saturday, September 23rd at 11:00 am on the main stage of the Bois d’Arc Festival located at 1100 W. 5th St. Enjoy remarks, a proclamation reading & presentation by Mayor H.L. Compton to the Jefferson Highway Association and the citizens of Bonham.

The Jefferson Highway was a famous 2300-mile driving route through the central United States, known as the “Pine to Palm Highway” for the trees found at either end stretching from Winnipeg, Canada to New Orleans, Louisiana. It was America's first north-south intercontinental roadway, built as part of the 1910’s National Auto

Trail system and was named for President Thomas Jefferson and inspired by the east-west Lincoln Highway. In the early 1900's, the people of Bonham, TX played a historic role by getting this highway to come through our town. As quoted from the citizens of Bonham “May Bonham live a thousand years less a day, for Bonham would not care to be on the map should the Jefferson Highway go some other way” (Jefferson Highway Declaration, January, 1918).
The City of Bonham
is celebrating its 175th Anniversary this year (2023).
The theme of this year-long celebration is “Remember our Past, Celebrate the Present, & Look to our Future.” The knowledge of Bonham’s role in the Jefferson Highway falls in direct correlation with our mission statement for the year and preserving our past as we celebrate the present and look to our future. A new generation of Bonhamites are very excited to bring the Jefferson Highway Travel Tourism route back to
SUDOKU
life and continue to show the perseverance and pride as was expressed for this driving route over 100 years ago. We truly hope that you will be able to attend one or all of these great events. Please contact the Bonham Visitor Center at 903583-9830 with any questions or comments.

Moms in Prayer
HOW IT ALL STARTED: In 1984, Fern Nichols' heart was heavy for her two oldest sons because of the temptations they would face in junior high school. She called another mom to pray for their children and the school. They invited other Christian moms and began meeting for prayer. This was the beginning of the Moms in Prayer Internation- al ministry. Word spread and soon groups grew in her area and later, spread throughout the world. Today, Moms in Prayer is led by President Sally Burke and groups meet in every U.S. state and in more than 150 countries.
JOIN US!
Our local Moms in Prayer group meet at 8:00am on Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Bonham in the prayer room of the activity building. Christian Moms, Grand-moms and other ladies are invited.

GREENVILLE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1955 LUNCHEON
8/22/23
Press Release - Ten members of the Greenville High School Class of 1955 and two guests lunched Saturday at Oaks Country Club in Greenville, Texas. The group gets together every four months for lunch and has their big reunion every five years. There are approximately forty-seven members left in the class. The class will again have lunch at Oaks Country Club on Saturday, January 27, 2024. Other guests at Oaks Country Club were introducing themselves as GHS Class of Whatever Year. All classes are encouraged to join us.
Freddie Sumrow from Granbury was at the
luncheon, despite his having been butted for over thirty minutes by a 300-pound Billy goat. The goat knocked Sumrow down and would not let him up. Sumrow was finally able to crawl to a fence, where he escaped with the goat still coming after him. When asked if Sumrow killed the goat, Sumrow replied that the goat was too expensive and was there to increase his goat herd.
M-k Wilson went to see the play Clue on Sunday at the Greenville Municipal Auditorium, and was reminded that sixty-eight years ago, GHS class of 1955 graduated from that stage.

No More Swimming Lessons
When my twin brother Hez and I were 15, we tried to teach our two 13 year old cousins, Frank and James, to swim. James had two brothers that went with us. Claude had been in the Navy, and David was 32 but couldn't swim. We found a creek and went upstream to find a shallow place. Hez was swimming ten yards ahead of me. I was swimming below the others that were walking on the bank.
3/28/23
Frank pushed James off the
bank but was grabbed and they fell close enough to sink me. Their heads were above water, but my head wasn't. When I ran out of air, I swam to the bottom, and they let go of me. I came up to see Claude helping his brother, but Frank strangled him. Claude barely made it to the bank. It took a long time for me to help James get to the bank. I learned later that Hez had told Frank, "Don't grab me
and I will save you," but Frank sank him. Strangled, Hez went to the bank.
While I was helping James, I was shocked to see Frank in deep water and half his body was out of the water. He was yelling, "Help, somebody save David!"
While holding on to tall Johnson grass, David reached out to help Frank, but Frank yanked hard, and the grass pulled loose. David stood on the bottom and pushed Frank up until
he was holding his feet on his shoulders. Before David passed out, he shoved Frank to the bank. Later we saw Davids's head come up, but his nose didn't get above water. His face looked almost purple. Then he sank out of sight. Hez and I found him about two feet under. As we were getting him to the bank, he came to and said slowly, "Am I causing you any trouble?"

Press Release - Fannin County, Texas -- Relay For Life of Fannin County is the only remaining Relay event in the North Texas region after the nationwide pandemic. Our mission and fight matter more than ever! In 2017, Fannin County became a part of the ACS $1 Million Dollar Club! Fannin County chapter, was also ranked the top Relay event in 2019 out of the ACS Dallas Region Market. So, you see, Fannin County Relay has had a big impact on
our communities since we first started in June 2000 – that’s over 23 years ago! Let’s keep this going and make a difference!
We’re heading back to the track! This year’s event will be held at Bonham High School Warrior Stadium, 1002 Warpath, Bonham, Texas 75418, on September 23, with the opening ceremony beginning at 1:00 p.m. This year’s theme: “Cancer is no fairytale” We invite all survivors to enjoy a free meal prior to the main event
from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. provided by Fannin Bank.
We know that the last couple of years have presented many challenges in the fight against cancer, but we continue to work hard and support the American Cancer Society in the fight against cancer. Cancer patients and their families need us now more than ever!
Cancer hasn’t stopped and neither can we. Your donations help the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking cancer research, provide free information and support, a 24/7 hotline, and help prevent cancer and find it earlier when it’s easier to treat. Your donation will truly help
save lives.
If you have been on a Relay team in the past, or are interested in forming a team for the first time this year, we NEED
you!! Come join the fight and help us attack cancer from every angle! Last season we raised $41,795 and this year's goal is to raise $35,000.

Christ Refuses To Accommodate
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Christ refused to line up with political correctness, feminism, evolution, immorality, and other doctrines of men.
The Lord called the politicalcorrect, hypocrites for playing at religion, taking advantage of the poor, and their general snobbery in Matthew chapter 23. The words of the Son of God, “But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9).
Christ challenges and demands that all have a good and honest heart. Luke records
Christ’s words as He defines the good heart, “But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience” (Luke 8:15).
Jesus spoke of the pure heart in saying, “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). Again, the Lord said, “A good man
out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things” (Matthew 12:35).
The Lord refuses to accommodate the wishes of those that do not believe. Jesus said, “Those by the wayside are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved”
(Luke 8:12). Some say, “you can be saved without obeying Christ, everyone is on the same road to heaven, just as long as you are sincere, it doesn't matter what you believe.” Christ does NOT accommodate these false statements! Jesus taught, “if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins”
(John 8:24). It matters what you believe. Jesus “became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him”
(Hebrews 5:9). It makes the difference if you obey or not.
The Messiah preached, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait
is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it”
(Matthew 7:13-14). Is everyone going to heaven? No.
Jesus does not accommodate a religion of convenience. He said, “They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away” (Luke 8:13). Christ must be first. He taught, “whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple” (Luke 14:27).
Christ did not accommodate those that are too busy for Him. Jesus spoke of those “which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection”
(Luke 8:14). Paul informs us that we are to “attend upon the Lord without distraction” (1 Corinthians 7:35). Let us live our lives in accordance to the will of our Lord.
Sunday Morning Re-take “May We Never
Hello everyone!
The Bible tells us in John 15:12-13, “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” As I think back on the events of September 11, 2001, I can’t help but think of the first responders who put their lives on the line to save the lives of others. We are truly grateful to them. We must also remember the ultimate sacrifice made by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, when He gave His life on the cross, so that you and I could have eternal life through Him. That is a debt that we can never repay. The gift of salvation is the most precious and valuable gift ever given, and, as I have said before, why anyone would not want to accept that gift is beyond me. I sincerely hope that you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and if not, I pray that today will be
the day that you do. It is the best decision you will ever make in your life.
One thing I love about doing my research for these articles is that I am constantly finding so many hymns that have very powerful messages. This one was written by James Grindly Small in 1866.
“I’ve found a Friend, O such a Friend!
He loved me ere I knew Him; He drew me with the cords of love, And thus He bound me to Him; And round my heart still closely twine
Those ties which naught can
sever, For I am His, and He is mine, Forever and forever.”
“I’ve found a Friend, O such a Friend!
He bled, He died to save me; And not alone the gift of life, But His own self He gave me. Naught that I have mine own I call, I’ll hold it for the giver; My heart, my strength, my life, my all Are His, and His forever.”
If you’re in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us at Central Baptist Church. Like we always say, visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!
Bro. Josh Stevenson

Ephesians 4:18
- Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:
I would rather live my life as if there is a God and die to find out there isn't, than live as if there isn't and to die to find out that there is. include and make time for GOD this Sunday

Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself. By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. 4, a Williamson County game warden was patrolling near the Lake
Texas Lake Levels +/as of 9/15/23
Granger spillway when from a distance he observed a couple taking turns using a cast net in the San Gabriel River. The male pulled out three catfish and put them in a white ice chest. When the warden saw the female walk toward the parking lot, he drove down to the spillway and made contact. Upon seeing the warden approaching, the female immediately tried calling someone on her cell phone but was unsuccessful due to poor reception. Asked if she was fishing, she said no, just walking her dog. After letting her know he had seen her and her male companion in the middle of the river using a cast net, she confessed. The warden also asked if she was attempting to tip off her friend, and she confirmed that as well. They were both cited for no fishing license and for illegal fishing means and methods. Civil restitution is pending.

Week of September 13, 2023
Cooper SLOW. Water lightly stained; 89 degrees: 1.00 feet below pool. Few reports and anglers on the water due to heat. Catfish continue to be good on shad. White bass can be caught with slabs in deeper water. This is the time of year birds start working the lake, so they can lead you to schooling fish. Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 84-86 degrees; 4.64 feet below pool. Crappie are stacked up on submerged trees in 8-12 feet of water, with a few deeper, but brush piles in 7-11 feet of water are gold. 1/16 ounce jigs are outproducing minnows.
Bushy top submerged trees are fishing great, single branch trees will hold 1-7 fish. Condo and bushy trees hold up to 100 or more fish. White Bass are in 7-15 feet of water on flats and ledges, and main lake points and the very end of boat ramps.
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 90 degrees; 1.51 feet below pool. Lake Tawakoni continues to fish really good despite incredibly hot water temperatures and very long extended summer patterns. The white bass and hybrid striper fishing continues to be good on main lake points and sub points in 10-25 feet of water. Both trolling and ripping deep diving crankbaits have been producing good fish. Seems like the fish are preferring white and chartreuse colors right now. The eating size catfish bite is wide open. Daily limits of 1-2 pound channel and blue catfish are common on prepared baits in 20 feet of water.
Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 86-88 degrees; 2.83 feet below pool. Fish are more active with the cooler weather. Striped bass are good with a majority of catches on shallow flats using topwaters early in the morning, but some catches on slabs in deep water. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striped bass fishing is good on live shad fishing ledges in 30-40 feet of water and drifting flats in 20-30 feet of water. Big fish will start showing up on the banks mid lake in the mornings as the weather cools off. Crappie fishing is slow on brush fishing minnows in 10-15 feet of water. Seeing a lot of fish not active on the piles. Catfish are good on cut shad fishing on the bottom in 30-45 feet of water seeing a lot more size to them. Bigger fish will start to stage up on flats in the next couple weeks. Bass are good on live shad along the bluffs on the banks in 5-8 feet of water working jerk baits off the bank .later in the mornings and plastics mid day.

Commissioners
Continued from page 8
7. Consider and take action on a Special Use Permit/ Zone Change located at 605 Svoboda (PID 77299) from Single Family Residential to Duplex: Mr. Kinnaird noted there were two protests by phone and one resident who appeared in person at the P&Z Commission meeting to oppose this request. He advised the P&Z are also in opposition to this and the owner has agreed to build a single-family home.
John Burnett made the motion to deny the request with Wayne Moore seconding the motion which passed.
8. Consider and take action to adopt the revised City of Bonham personnel policy: Brad Nichols spoke to advise why this is needed and how the revisal has gone through the proper process for it to be adopted. A motion was made by Wayne Moore to approve, seconded by John Burnett and passed.
9. Consider and take action to appoint Christina Tillet to the Texoma Community Center Board of Trustees: After a brief explanation by Sean Pate why he believes Ms. Tillet is an excellent choice for this vacancy, a motion was made by John Burnett to approve with Michael Evans seconding the motion which passed.
10. Consider and take action on a resolution adopting a street and facility naming policy for the City of Bonham: Mayor Compton noted that some time ago, Michael Evans was chosen to head a committee to work on this policy. He noted the policy was given to each councilman for consideration. John Burnett made the motion to adopt the policy with Ernie Quintana seconding the motion. Before the vote was taken Councilman Moore thanked Rusty Deets, Kathy Self and Michael Evans for all their work. The motion passed.
11. Consider and take action and take action on a resolution amending the fiscal year 2022-2023 budget:
Sarah Osburn asked the council if they had any questions on the budget they were given.
Michael Evans questioned the downward amendment on the EMS Intermedix. After a detailed explanation by Ms. Osburn, a motion was made by John Burnett to accept with Michael Evans seconding the motion which passed.
12. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance conveying property at 908 Benton St. PID 90991: Mayor Compton called to order the hearing at 5:55 p.m. after which Mr. Kinnaird explained how this was a sealed bid for $9,000 and how it was recommended to accept the bid. There were no other speakers and the hearing ended at 5:56 p.m. Sean Pate read the ordinance and Michael Evans made the motion to approve the ordinance with Wayne Moore seconding the motion which passed.
13. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance adopting the fiscal year 2023-2024 operating budget for the City of Bonham: Mayor Compton called the hearing to order at 5:57 p.m. Ms. Osburn noted there were two versions of the budget with one showing a $.55 cent tax rate and one with a $.56 cent tax. She noted that even at the $.56 cent tax rate, there was a decrease from the current rate of $.56759. She noted they are closely on track for what they budgeted for this
year and how water and sewer is noted in the budget as well as a cost-of-living adjustment for all employees. She detailed what the extra penny will fund before asking for questions. A discussion ensued with Mr. Pate expounding on the funding in the budget for street improvements, John Burnett stating he believes it would be better to give the citizens of Bonham a break by going with the $.55 cent tax rate and Rusty Deets questioning material slated to be used on street improvements. The hearing concluded at 6:07 p.m. After Sean Pate read the ordinance, Michael Evans made a statement about there not being any citizens raising opposition to the extra penny tax rate before making the motion to accept the budget that reflects the $.56 cent tax rate.
Ernie Quintana seconded the motion which passed with one nay vote.
14. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance setting the 2023 Tax Rate on a first reading: Mayor Compton called the hearing to order at 6:09 p.m. Mr. Pate noted the ordinance was for a $.56000 total ad valorem tax rate for tax year beginning January 1, 2023. Mayor Compton asked if anyone wished to say anything and when noone came forward, Sean Pate expounded on how the citizens are wanting higher quality street improvements before Mayor Compton concluded the hearing at 6:12 p.m. Mr. Pate read the ordinance after which Wayne Moore made the motion to approve the tax rate with Michael Evans seconding the
motion which passed with one nay vote.
15. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance establishing Water and Wastewater rates for City of Bonham water customers: Mayor Compton called the hearing to order at 6:13 p.m. CEO of New Gen Strategies and Solutions Chris Ekrut agreed with Sean Pate regarding the increased costs of purchased water from NTMWD (North Texas Municipal Water District), pipe material costs, chemical costs, personnel, etc.
After discussing the increased costs incurred, he noted the last water rate increase was in October 2019 and the last sewer rate increase was in October 2022 before he noted that the increase, they were talking about for a 4,000-gal. customer would be $2.26 a month, for a 6,000-gal. customer the increase would be $3.39 a month. When Mr. Ekrut concluded his statements, a discussion ensued about the feasibility of having a separate water meter for irrigation purposes thus avoiding additional sewage water charges. Mayor Compton asked for any further questions
and when there were none, he concluded the hearing at 6:16 p.m. Sean Pate read the ordinance amending ordinance 1391 after which Wayne Moore made the motion to approve the ordinance with Michael Evans seconding the ordinance which passed.
16. Hold public hearing and consider and take action on an ordinance amending Ordinance 1409 providing a permit, registration and reinspection fee schedule: Mayor Compton called the hearing to order at 6:18 p.m. Mark Kinnaird noted this involves new commercial permitting fees that is being implemented in Bonham’s sister cities and elsewhere that is based on valuation as opposed to square footage and explained why it is more equitable for Bonham to follow suit. Mayor Compton asked if any wished to speak and when no one came forward, he concluded the hearing at 6:20 p.m. Sean Pate then read the ordinance and Wayne Moore made the motion to approve with Michael Evans seconding the motion which passed.
17. Adjourn: Meeting adjourned at 6:21 p.m.

ECTOR -- While Ector didn't defeat Miller Grove on Sept. 8, the Lady Eagles did test the state-ranked opponent during their three-game home Class 1A non-district volleyball match.
It showed their improvement during year two of Ector fielding teams in the sport.
A mix of veterans and newcomers are continuing to pre-
pare this month for District 19-1A play in October -- and another assured postseason trip afterwards.
Despite graduating an alldistrict selection, Ector, a 2022 bi-district finalist, returns several recipients of 19-1A notoriety from its inaugural season. Second-team selections Julia Bailey, junior, and Lydia Essary, sophomore, join honorable mentions Alyssa Mackey, senior, and Ally Harris, sophomore.
Dene' Adams now leads the Lady Eagles, having previously guided then recentlyresurrected programs Bells and Whitewright, respectively, in 2009 and 2013 during her first seasons to its first postseason trips since restarting. Afterwards, she coached Tom Bean to postseason trips during the last six of her seven years there -- including reaching the regional semifinals in 2020 and 2021 and area round in 2022.

Bonham State Park
By Malinda Allison, Fannin County Museum of History
The 28th in a series of articles for the 175th Anniversary of Bonham Bonham State Park was
built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). For decades it was a wonderful playground for the citizens of Bonham and Fannin County. Today it is still enjoyed by local residents and draws tourists to Fannin County.
The CCC was a federal work relief program. Young men and veterans were given jobs on public works projects. The Bonham CCC camp was located at approximately the same place where General Cable was later located.
Bonham State Park was created out of land given to the Texas State Park Board by the City of Bonham. On December 11, 1933, the CCC, using picks and shovels, began construction of an earthen dam at the Bonham site. Power tools came soon.
The sixty-five acre lake was to be the major recreational resource of the park. Crews worked a minimum of twelve hours per day. The limestone for the main buildings was quarried locally. Picnic areas, horse trails and hiking trails were built.
Congressman Sam Rayburn made numerous visits to the Park during construction.
Up to the mid or late 1970’s, Bonham State Park was the area’s primary day-use recreation destination, particularly for young people who swam, played miniature golf, danced and congregated in and around the day-use area. Families gathered for reunions and fishermen enjoyed the lake.
Overnight camping was introduced in early 1950’s. Bonham State Park remains a wonderful venue for swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and bird watching for local residents and visitors.
