Press Release - It is with great excitement that The Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce announces the return of Autumn in Bonham Bike Rally on October 7th. Established in 1982, the last ride took place in 2019. Thanks to the efforts of original event organizers, the Bike Rally committee, the Fannin county Amateur Radio Club, local county police chiefs and sponsors, the ride is back on track.
The ride holds the distinction of being a Century Mile ride and features 4 paved routes, and 2 gravel routes, all within Fannin County. Participants of past rides will recognize familiar landmarks, along the 22, 40, 70 & 100 mile paved routes and also enjoy riding by Bois D’Arc Lake, a new county attraction. Riders that prefer gravel have a 45 mile and a 68 mile option.
New this year is the addition of downtown activities centered around the Fannin County Courthouse Square, which was undergoing renovation during the last ride in 2019. Local talent will take the stage at 10am, followed by local favorites, Cassandra Hashert at 12:00pm and The Buzz Andrews Band at 1:00pm. Vendors and food trucks will be set up around the square including Neighbors Place Winery, J&S BBQ, Sew Art by Brandy, TxDot, Fannin County Crisis Center, The Spotted Mug & American Patriot Garage.
To register as a rider, go to https:// www.bikereg.com/autumn-in-bonham. For volunteer, sponsorship & vendor information go to www.bonhamchamber. com or contact the Bonham Area Chamber of Commerce at 903-583-4811 or info@bonhamchamber.com.

After Ms. Richardson, Volunteer Fireman Jason Walker spoke to express dissatisfaction that those who disregard burn bans and place others in danger by doing so, do not generally suffer consequences for their irresponsible acts. HONEY GROVE -- "No punts. No points."
It's the slogan Honey Grove has enthusiastically embraced and exemplified during the 2023 high school football season.
The former motivates the Warriors' offense on third downs.
The later does likewise for Honey Grove's defense on every snap while it's on the field.
The result: The Warriors (30) have scored 188 points this season during three games and a quarter of another -- while allowing zero.
"We play good defensive football," said second-year Honey Grove head coach Shane Fletcher.
"We live in an offensive world," he said, "but Honey Grove kids love to play defense."
Linebacker Levi Beavers, a 2022 Texas Sports Writers Association third-team all-state
selection, joins linemen Asher Price and Brody Mahan on the defense -- the junior trio described by Fletcher as being "grown men."
He said that the "biggest surprise" on the defensive unit this year has been sophomore Mason Banker who has recorded 51 tackles.
Fletcher also noted that the Warriors' defense has already blocked three punts.
The unit has helped create shorter ensuing fields to drive for points for the offense, which this season has three quarterbacks to utilize: sophomore Ryelan Morris, sophomore Jarrmez Daniels and senior Lucas Morrison. Each per game has thrown a touchdown.
"We can throw [the ball] in the flats, deep and can run it," said Fletcher. "We are so much further along physically and in the brain of the game."
Mahan, a tight end and defensive tackle, and senior Cortney Cooper, an offensive and defensive lineman, credited both the past and present for Honey
Grove's dominating undefeated start this season.
"[It's] our consistency in practice and our work ethic during the summer," said Mahan.
"I think what we did last year ... and the linemen challenges we did during the summer have carried over into this season," said Cooper. "We have a lot of guys on both sides of the ball who are hungry and go out [there] fighting every game."
The Warriors, the 9-2A-I runner-up and a 9-3 area finalist in 2022, will begin district play on Sept. 29 by hosting AlbaGolden, having the league bye on Sept. 22.
"Cooper is good and battletested. They beat a very good Collinsville team [during predistrict play]," said Fletcher on Sept. 18 of the reigning undefeated district champion. "Wolfe City, Alba-Golden and us are undefeated.
"We'll see how it shakes out, [during district play]" he said.

Letter to the Editor
Without a doubt, one of the most pleasant places to be in Bonham is Powder Creek Park. It is quiet, scenic, and peaceful. Cars can be seen on Main Street, but their sound does not reach the north side of the park.
As I sit at Powder Creek Park now, there is a blind man
with his cane walking alone on the paved path. Two young couples are walking together. There is a lone woman with her pretty dog. A man on his bicycle. Another man out for a stroll. Sitting at one of the tables is a family with young children.
There are patches of
dandelions which add color to the grass. The myriad of
trees have not yet turned for fall, but soon that will happen and it will, the park will offer a different spectacular view. Don't want to take walk? Just enjoy the peacefulness from your parked vehicle. I prefer the north side.

Road Work updates for Week ending 9/15/2023
As commissioner, I plan to let you know every week what we accomplished the week before in regards to our slogan "On the road to Recovery". As citizens, you expect us to be out working daily in the precinct and bringing our county roads back up to at least a minimum standard. With 192 miles of road to
maintain in just Precinct One our team of six people is out every day working to make this happen. While you may not see them on your road we want to assure you they are working and each week we will let you know what they accomplished the week before.
For the week ending September 15, 2023 the team was able to grade the following county
roads: 1245, 1246, 1250, 1251, 1285, 1286, 1316, 1444, 1504, 1505, 1525, 1535, 1544, 1545, 4045, 4070, 4075, 4105, 4115, 4120, 4130, 4315, 4320, and 4330. In addition, the team removed the remaining brush that was left from brush cutting on 2515 and 2600. Pot Holes were filled on 1105, 1110, 1115, 1215, and 1200. CR 1200 was cleared of brush from someone that went down the road cutting off overhanging branches and basically leaving them sticking out in the roadway. Quite a few loads were hauled to the county barn due to this persons actions. As we stated last week, we are in the process of getting a new tractor and mower to mow the bar ditches. We have solicited prices from two separate companies at this time and hope to
3/28/23
have a decision by next week on how we can proceed. You are welcome to call us with any concerns or areas that need attention within the precinct. Please understand
though, the issues we are dealing with were not created in a day, week, or even a year and it will take a while to fix them. Thank you to everyone who has stopped and thanked the team
for being on the roads working, we appreciate it.

While in college, Jim sang with the A Capella Chorus and sang bass with the Men’s Quartet that traveled with the Chorus.
On August 13, 1957, Jim was married to Allie Cordelia (Newhouse) Rucker at the North Park Church of Christ in Abilene, Texas. To this union 3 children were born, Laura Leigh, Elaine Suzanne, and James Barron.
In August of 1960, Jim began a Preaching Ministry that would last a lifetime. He served as the pulpit minister for the Church of Christ in Santa Anna, Texas for 3 years before moving to Sherman, Texas where he preached for the Grand Avenue congregation for 6 years. While in Sherman, Jim was on a weekly television show called “Know Your Bible.” The family moved to Woodward, Oklahoma in March of 1969, where Jim served as the pulpit minister for over 28 years. After retiring, Jim spent several years working with the senior’s ministry, teaching, and officiating funerals. During Jim’s tenure in Woodward, the church building was added on and remodeled on two different occasions and the church also enjoyed a successful Bus Ministry for over 15 years. Jim was the director of the Boiling Springs Christian Youth Camp for over 20 years, and he also taught a weekly class at the Fort Supply Prison for over 12 years. Also during this time, Jim and Mike Marsalis, from the Church of Christ in Waynoka, had a local television program called “Moments with the Master” that ran for 2 years. He also held Revival Meetings in East Texas and Northwest Oklahoma. In 1995, the Congregation sponsored a trip for Jim and Cordelia to the Holy Lands, which was a Highlight of their Ministry. Jim and Cordelia enjoyed traveling very much and after retirement they traveled to many places in the United States.
Jim very much loved gardening and music. He always had a very nice yard and garden to enjoy.
Jim also had an extensive vinyl record collection and very much enjoyed listening to all the Big Bands and musicians like Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and others. In later years when he could no longer work in the yard, he enjoyed watching all kinds of sports on TV and especially enjoyed watching the OKC Thunder play along with the Detroit Lions and others.

Building Local - From Clearing to Pipe Production
September 2023 / Press Release
Site grading for the relocated FM 1550 Projects like Lake Ralph Hall require significant manpower and expertise, and they offer a unique opportunity for local contractors and businesses.
In fact, the Lake Ralph Hall project is providing around a dozen local contractors with additional business, including TGW Land Services based in Bonham and AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe in Paris, TX. Few people know land clearing and removal better than Blake Goode, who founded TGW Land Services 14 years ago. Since that time the company has worked on rights of way for railroads, pipelines and other kinds of utilities across North Texas and southern Oklahoma, most recently assisting with construction of nearby Bois d’Arc Lake. Now, the business is helping clear land and build fences for Lake Ralph Hall. Goode often has between 15 and 20 workers onsite, and they have enjoyed collaborating extensively with Upper Trinity Regional Water District on the Lake Ralph Hall project.
“It’s been nice to stay in the area,” Goode shared. “Upper Trinity is really good to work with and Flatiron (Upper Trinity’s road and bridge contractor) has been great to work with too.”
TGW Land Services will
continue to work on various aspects of the project over the next five years.
Manufacturing pipeline for the lake project
Tyler Bolen is the Senior Territory Manager for AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe at the company’s newest location in Paris, TX. The $90-million facility opened in April 2021 and is another key local provider for the Lake Ralph Hall project. AMERICAN is manufacturing all 32 miles of pipe that will carry water from the lake to treatment. The plant’s approx. 150 full-time local employees have already begun manufacturing the 50-foot pieces of pipe, which are now being delivered along its future route. A total of 3,400 pieces of pipe will be needed for the project.
“I am excited to be a part of a project of this type and magnitude,” Bolen said. “Lake Ralph Hall will provide millions of gallons of water daily for treatment and ultimately to residents.”
“With all the workers in and out [of the project site], you have to look at what it brings into the local grocery stores, restaurants and gas especially,” Goode added. “Any revenue coming in is a big boon to the area.” Plus, he adds, “I think the people [visiting the future lake] will be good for the local businesses.”
Bolen agrees, seeing the lake as a future recreational hub for the community. He is also
personally looking forward to the hiking, fishing and boating it will provide. “Once completed, I hope to bring my family to the lake to show them everything my company had a part in building and to spend some time on the new lake.”
Collaboration of Twenty Years and Counting
For over two decades Upper Trinity has been working with the City of Ladonia and Fannin County to make Lake Ralph Hall a special place, both for people and for the environment - - assuring a reliable water supply for generations to come. Upper Trinity values its long-term partnerships with the City of Ladonia and Fannin County. In addition to making a certain amount of raw water available for local use, Upper Trinity is making provisions in the pump station and future pipeline so that Ladonia can take raw (or untreated) water for local use at the appropriate time in the future. Upper Trinity is also working with the city and nearby water supply corporations to create a Utility Master Plan to help them prepare for new development around the Lake Ralph Hall. Upper Trinity has additionally hired local contractors whenever possible. To date, twelve of the companies doing work on the Lake Ralph Hall project are based in North Texas, providing jobs for local residents and bringing additional revenue to the area.

White bass can be caught with slabs in deeper water. This is the time of year birds start working the lake, so they can lead you to schooling fish.
Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 83 degrees; 2.29 feet below pool. Bass are good early on topwaters and spinnerbaits in the back of the pockets and windy points on the main lake. Points and humps are good with Texas rigs and Carolina Rigs in 4-8 feet. Shad patterned squarebill crankbaits are good in front of flooded weeds in 2-5 feet of water.
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 84-86 degrees; 5.01 feet below pool. Crappie are stacked up on submerged trees in 8-12 feet of water, with a few deeper, but brush piles in 7-11 feet of water are gold. 1/16 ounce jigs are outproducing minnows. Bushy top submerged trees are fishing great, single branch trees will hold 1-7 fish. Condo and bushy trees hold up to 100 or more fish.
Texoma GOOD. Water stained; 86-88 degrees; 3.10 feet below pool. Fish are more active with the cooler weather.
Striped bass are good with a majority of catches on shallow flats using topwaters early in the morning, but some catches on slabs in deep water. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striped bass fishing is good using topwaters early in the morning along shallow flats on the west end of the lake. Swimbaits can catch fish in 10-15 feet of water on humps near creeks. Live bait fishing is still producing numbers in 3540 feet of water in creek channels. Crappie fishing is slow on brush in the little mineral arm using electronics to find active fish using jigs with a slow presentation.
Game Wardens See Rise In Fatalities, Accidents During Labor Day Weekend
AUSTIN— Texas Game Wardens patrolling water bodies across the state noticed an increase in water-related fatalities and boating accidents compared to last year’s Labor Day holiday weekend.
The weekend typically marks the end of the unofficial boating season and coincides with the opening of dove season, making it a busy time for Texas Game Wardens.
“Game Wardens patrolled the state’s waterways to ensure boating laws were observed, to confirm vessels had appropriate safety gear and, above all,
to ensure that recreational boaters and anglers remained safe,” said Cody Jones, assistant commander for marine enforcement for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Wardens patrolling September 2-4 reported five boating accidents, two boating-related fatalities and two open-water drownings. They also arrested five individuals for boating while intoxicated, one of whom had a child passenger aboard. In 2022, wardens responded to three boating accidents, no boating-related fatalities and one open-water drowning.

The boating-related fatalities occurred at Amistad Reservoir and Lake Ray Hubbard, while the drownings happened at Lake Whitney State Park and Lake Lavon.
“We are saddened by the loss of life on our waterways, and we keep the families in our thoughts and prayers,” said Jones. “These tragic events should be a reminder of the importance of being equipped with and using the proper safety equipment and taking a boater education course.”
September Rains Bring Some Relief To Dry Texas Pastures, Fields
By Emmy Powell Communications Specialist texasfarmbureau.org
Sporadic rainfall across the state helped provide some relief, but more is needed to escape the intense drought conditions.
“The rains in September renewed hope for some,” Tracy Tomascik, Texas Farm Bureau associate director of Commodity and Regulatory Activities, said. “Pasture conditions have suffered across the state for the last four months, and some areas haven’t had relief in two years or more. This rain was beneficial, but much more is needed to bring
Texas out of extreme drought.”
Prior to the rains, nearly 80% of Texas pastures were rated poor, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Texas Crop Progress and Condition report.
Ranchers began supplemental feeding earlier due to the dry conditions and lack of available forage. And as pasture conditions continued to decline with high temperatures and limited moisture, ranchers once again began culling herds and selling calves early.
“Some producers were able to store hay after the wet

spring we experienced, but the summer drought forced them to dig into that hay, so supplies have dwindled for many,” Tomascik said. “The long-term forecast calls for a transition to the El Nino weather pattern, so there’s still hope for a late season cutting of perennial grasses for additional hay supplies.”
Rain that is expected this fall will also help farmers and ranchers with their small grain crops like oats and wheat to help alleviate the need to purchase hay and other supplemental feed, Tomascik noted. Limited supplies will continue to drive up prices for hay.
Farmers and ranchers should make decisions regarding stockpiled forages and hay supplies, planning for ways to stretch available nutrition.
“As expected with supply and demand, if there’s less hay, it’s going to be more expensive,” Tomascik said. “But properly storing what hay you do have is important, as is testing the hay to know the nutritional value.”
The mid-September rains also brought cooler temperatures, except in the south and southwestern parts of the state. Those areas are expected to continue reaching triple-digit temperatures.

Bonham Trade Days Subject Of Kiwanis Talk
Trade Days is one of the main ways that members bond.
By Mary-k “M-k”
Ashley Wilson
M-k Wilson spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Bonham, Texas, on the importance of Bonham
Trade Days, which is managed by Kiwanis. Through the efforts of Kiwanians who volunteer to work at Trade Days each month, the club has been able to donate over $52,000 this year to worthy causes. This is a long way from 1977 when John Burnett and other members would collect only $4 or $5 a day.
It was the late Bryce McIntyre who thought up Bonham Trade Days. Before that, Kiwanis had pancake breakfasts and did a Christmas Radio Auction. It is important that all club members take some part in Trade Days.
Twelve workers are needed during Trade Days, plus behind-thescenes workers in addition to our manager, James Moss. Working
Melissa Maxwell passed around a schedule of “Home for the Holidays 2023”, celebrating 175 years of Christmas in Bonham. On Saturday, November 25, vendors kick off the season with a hot cocoa hop and Chi Lambda will have the tree lighting at 6:00 P.M. The Holiday Parade will be on Friday, December 1 at 6:00 P.M. and the Holiday Wine Stroll and Taste of Bonham will be on Saturday, December 2 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Put these dates on your calendar now and for more information, please contact the Bonham Visitors Center. It’s also time to order your Lollipop to be prominently displayed in Christmas Tree Lane.
The next Bonham Trade Days will be held Thursday through Sunday, October 5 through 8 at Fort Inglish. This will be an

Well Done
By Mike Dickison Minister for the Ivanhoe Church of Christ
Jesus used the very words of this title in the parable of ‘the talents.’ He said that the servants who were faithful to their lord and did his will would hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).
They were faithful, not by accident, nor by happenstance, but because they chose and planned to be faithful. Joshua made that choice, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15).
Jesus said that we are to seek “first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). It is to be THE priority
in our lives. Ezra “had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach” (Ezra 7:10). Being faithful is required.
John records the words of the Lord, “be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life” (Revelation 2:10).
The scriptures plainly teach that there is a judgment coming and that the preparation time is in this life. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). We must contemplate what we need to do and what we need to stop doing. Paul stood before Felix and “reasoned of
righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come” (Acts 24:25). Sadly, Felix did not become a Christian.
John wrote “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous” (1 John 5:3). We find “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment” (1 John 4:17).
On the day of judgment, we want to hear the words of Christ, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34). Let us strive to be obedient and faithful to the Lord so that we may hear, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” As I was thinking of what to write this week, I recalled an old saying that I first heard a long time ago. “Seven days without prayer makes one weak.” This is very true. Every day before I leave out to go to work or church, or to run errands on days off, I always pray to the Lord seeking His blessings on what is to come for the day. As I’ve said before, our problem in America is that we, as a nation, are not seeking the Lord’s guidance in all that we say and do. This is a very dangerous thing. In order to experience true revival in our nation, prayer is a must!
Ireland that his mother was terribly ill. He wrote a poem to comfort her entitled “Pray Without Ceasing.” Later, it was set to music by Charles C. Converse, and renamed to the classic hymn we know it as today.
“What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear; all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!”
“Have we trials and
temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer! Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer!”
If you’re in search of a good church home, we invite you to come visit and be a part of our worship at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Sunday!

being life the in the heart:
Romans 12:18
If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
Romans 12:18 recognizes that while we can’t control everything, we should try our best to seek peace. For instance, you can’t control someone else’s anger or vitriol, but you can control yourself.
By controlling our words, our actions, and our conduct, we can encourage peace rather than discord. For example, as believers, we should purposely avoid provoking strife or fighting. Include and make time for GOD this Sunday

Erwin Smith was “one of the greatest photographers of cowboy life who ever lived.”
Jimmie Evans
(Quote from Imagining the Open Range: Erwin E. Smith, Cowboy Photographer.)
Although Erwin Smith was born in 1886 in Honey Grove, the town his great-grandfather helped found, he grew up in Bonham. He always wanted to be an artist and a cowboy. Spending summers on his uncle’s ranch near Quanah, he began taking photographs of the cowboy life when he was 12 or 13. He later attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
He visited and worked on ranches in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas, documenting the cowboy way of life at the time when the open range was disappearing.
After his death in 1947, the extensive collection of his negatives eventually found a home at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth. Most of the images can be viewed on the Museum’s website at https:// www.cartermuseum.org/artists/erwin-e-smith
In addition to his wonderful legacy of work about the cowboy way of life, he also documented scenes in Bonham.
He photographed the parade at the Negro State Fair held in Bonham in 1911.
He photographed the paving of Main Street in Bonham from 1st to 3rd Streets.
He photographed “trades day” around the Courthouse Square in Bonham.
He photographed the Bonham Blues baseball team.
These are just a few of the photographs taken by Erwin Smith in Bonham which are on the Amon Carter Museum website.
When he died in 1947, his obituary in the Bonham Daily Favorite said “Erwin Smith
Goes to Last Roundup.” He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Honey Grove and his grave has a Texas Historical Marker.
The Fannin County Museum of History has an exhibit of photographs and memorabilia related to Erwin Smith.
In addition, Smith photos can be viewed at many loca-
tions in Bonham, including the Bonham Public Library, the Fannin County Historical Commission and Fannin Bank.
You could spend an enjoyable afternoon visiting these locations to view the work of Bonham’s most famous artist.

Mr. Stokes was well known in Bonham as “The Tortilla Man”. He started making and selling tortillas from his cart on the Square in Bonham from 1918 until 1950. Even Speaker of The House Sam Rayburn liked them so much that he had his tortillas shipped to D.C. by bus.
