At the end of World War II, there was an unchurched community located at the base of Couch Mountain in rural Upshur County, Gilmer, Texas. An old church building, in a state of disrepair, stood vacant and abandoned. It served as a constant reminder that the people who once worshiped there had disbanded as a congregation.Withthewar’s closure, families that had been disrupted were returning home with a vision of rebuilding the community. Among them were three families who felt that organizing a mission church was a good way to start. With this thought in mind and heart, they cleaned up the old building as much as they could and gave the meeting place the name Victory Baptist Church. Indeed their vision preceded Victory. This was in 1947. They called their first pastor who stayed with them eleven months. Then they reached out to East Texas Baptist College for help.InMay 1948 my wife and I were sent from the college to lead them. With this very simple beginning our pastoral ministry began. One of our first tasks was to work with them on weekends helping to build a new meeting place and organize the people in a working unit. From where I stand today I see the Victory Baptist Church as illustrating the truth of Proverbs 29:18. This would be a good time for each of us to catch a new vision of our responsibility to God to make the church we are a part of a place where the Holy Spirit can do His Work. Be faithful as you help to build the church to the glory of God.

Fannin County History
By Mike Dickison (Minister of the Ivanhoe Church of Christ) When it comes to living for God, we must be ‘Living The Truth’. We must have the right heart-set, receive the message of truth, prove with the word of truth, walk in truth, and continue in the truth of the good news of Heaven. We are told to “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith” (Hebrews 10:22). Our hearts must be in our service, worship, and living for the Lord. “The Lord looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). We must recognize God’s Word as Truth. Paul wrote to the Christians in Thessalonica, “thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13).We are to prove ourselves with the word of truth. Are we doing right, being obedient, serving properly? We must compare to the word of God. We are told, “But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left” (2 Corinthians 6:4-7). We must walk in Truth. Jesus said that we are to “continue in my(His) word” (John 8:31). John wrote that he “rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth” (3 John 3).Paul conveyed this message to the church of the Colossians, “For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel; Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth” (Colossians 1:5-6). Christians are to teach the Gospel to all theLetworld.uslive in a way that demonstrates the reality of God in our lives.

Hypoxylon Canker
Here in our part of Texas, we have a common disease, notori ous for spreading its damaging ef fects wherever it goes. From oaks to pecans, many trees in our area are susceptible to this affliction. The disease is called Hypoxylon Canker.Hypoxylon Canker is a fungus and a pathogen, infecting stressed trees by invading deadwood and eventually sapwood. Fortunately, healthy trees are much less likely to be affected. But as soon as stress or damage weakens a tree, the fungus soon becomes active and begins to grow. Small spores can sometimes rest safely in a tree for years, never infecting the sap wood so long as the tree remains healthy. Yet when a prolonged drought, soil compaction, or leaf funguses begin to weaken a tree, the spores quickly find their way down into the sapwood and rap idly decay the wood. Tan, gray, and black patches are the areas of spore production we often see in dead limbs. Here the spores dis seminate into the wind and find its next host. The abundance of Hypoxylon Canker in our area combined with the fact that our state has been un dergoing a long period of drought makes for pristine conditions for the damaging fungus to take over. Although much of the fun gus rests in dead trees, live trees as well are often infected. Once the Hypoxylon Canker reaches the sapwood, the rotting begins in earnest, spreading from branch to branch. Bark begins to peel off in pieces as the wood dies, and the crown thins noticeably. Before long, if stressful conditions con tinue, the tree will die. Unfortunately, there is no known control of this fungus once it gets into the trunk wood. Removal of infected tissues and dying trees can help slow the spread. Oaks and hardwood trees—hickory, pecan, maple, etc.—are extreme ly vulnerable. As with all disease, the best defense is a good offense. Keeping your trees healthy re duces the likelihood of infection. From diagnosing your trees problems to treating the insects and diseases that affect them, were here to help. Questions? NORTH Topsoil moisture throughout the district was adequate to surplus. Most areas reported 0.5-9 inches of rain. Some ponds that were dried up were full or almost full. Pastures immediately started to green up with moisture and milder temperatures. Cotton bolls opened, but fields still looked poor. Remaining soybeans looked poor as well. Tree conditions continued to decline despite the recent rainfall. Cattle and other livestock inventories continued to decline with more culling. Insect and disease pressure was minimal. CENTRAL A map of the 12 Texas A&M AgriLife Extension districts. A map of the 12 Texas A&M AgriLife Extension districts. Western parts of the district missed the bulk of the recent rainfall, but eastern areas reported 1 to 4.5 inches. Soil moisture remained very short. Overall, pastures and rangeland conditions were very poor but were beginning to green up due to the recent rain and cooler temperatures. Improved pastures were responding quickly to the recent moisture. Native grasslands have been slower to respond, but improvements were noted. Overgrazed pastures were still struggling with livestock quickly consuming any new growth. Cattle producers were still supplementing with hay and were concerned about the winter forage outlook. Most stock tanks received little runoff. Livestock were in poor to fair condition. Nearly 80% of cotton was harvested. EAST Much-needed rain fell across the district with as much as 7 inches received in some areas. A few counties reported only receiving a quarter inch of rain. Pasture and rangeland conditions were poor to fair. Subsoil conditions were short to adequate. Topsoil conditions were adequate. Producers hoped the rainfall would help them get another hay cutting. Cattle markets remained strong. Livestock were doing fair to good. Armyworms were reported in multiple counties ROLLING PLAINS The district received rain and cooler temperatures. Rainfall amounts ranged from 1 inch to almost 8 inches, but most areas received multiple inches. Soil moisture improved as cloudy days and cooler temperatures followed the storm systems. She noted how she had sent out letters of notification to the neighboring landowner of this request on August 9 which she followed up with a phone call to the landowner on August 23rd where she left a message on his answering de vice asking if he had received her letter. She stated in that message she advised him that if he had any protests to this request, he could either e-mail her or call her for information and the protest form to fill out. She noted that she received no protest from that landowner or any other person. Judge Moore commented on a revision made regarding the petitioners’ dumpsters then asked if there were any who had comments. There were no further com ments.

4. Discussion, consideration and action regarding Special Exception application; 6.3705 acres, Property ID#s 78364 and 78366 on FM 897 in Tele phone – requesting reduction in front and rear setbacks for Retail and Commercial from 80’ to 40’ and the rec ommendation to Commis sioners Court: After reading the agenda item, Judge Moore noted there was a new map for the members to review. A question was then posed to Di Hopkins as to what information was included in the letters of notification that was sent out to adjacent landowners. Di Hop kins noted that she had stated on both the first letter of a zon ing change request, what the usage on the property would be (the landowner intends to build an RV/Boat Storage Facility) as well as on the notification letter regarding the special exception setback request. A discussion ensued about the suggestion for a motion of approval to include and specify the approval be re stricted to the stated proposed usage by the landowner. When the discussion concluded, Kev in Darwin made the motion to approve and recommend to the Commissioners Court that the setbacks be allowed as long as the setbacks are tied to the Storage Facility. Gary Fer nandes seconded the motion which passed.

Texoma EXCELLENT. Water stained; 88 degrees; 1.38 feet below. Striped bass are good early in the morning on topwa ters, then chasing big schools in the middle of the lake and in the river with slabs. Striped bass fishing is good on topwaters along shallow sandy banks early in the morning. Switching to live shad fishing the flats in 15-20 feet of water. Blue and channel cat fishing remains excellent on cut shad and pre pared baits in 25-35 feet of water. Catching a lot of smaller fish to catch a few bigger fish. Largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing is getting better using topwaters and soft plas tics early along the boulders and rocky banks in 5-10 feet of water. Late morning afternoon lipped lure bit is good off the banks in 15-20 feet of water over brush and structure. Crappie fishing is excellent on minnows in 10-15 feet of water over brush piles around the mouths of coves and creeks.
Lavon GOOD. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 4.42 feet low. White bass are good with a sporadic topwater bite in the morning, but mostly smaller sized fish, and in 10-20 feet of water on structure. Larger fish will be 5 feet under the sur face biting on one ounce white or chartreuse slabs and swim baits. Crappie are fishing best after 10 A.M. in 10-18 feet of water near structure using minnows and jigs. In the morning target fish in 5-7 feet of water on structure along the banks.
Cooper FAIR. Water lightly stained; 83 degrees. Fishing should improve after the cold front, but will definitely im prove the temperature for cooler fishing. Catfish are good with juglines. White bass and hybrids are fair with large spoons. Crappie are slow on main lake brush piles and stand ing timber with jigs and minnows. Bass are fair along grass ledges and standing timber with crankbaits.
Fork GOOD. Water Stained; 83 degrees; 5.56 feet low. Bass are good early in the morning on topwaters and spinner tails in 1-3 feet of water, then in 5-7 feet of water just off the shore line with shaky heads and square bill crankbaits. Lake Fork crappie are starting to stack up on trees in good numbers ear lier this year than we normally see. The water temperatures have dropped to the low 80s and the fish are getting hungry. Best depths this week seem to be 18-24 feet of water with fish suspended 8-14 feet deep on the trees.
Game Warden Field Notes
The warden asked for a breath alyzer sample, which regis tered above the legal limit. At the conclusion of the roadside investigation, the operator of the ATV received two citations for operating the ATV on the roadway and without safety equipment, all four minors re ceived minor consumption ci tations and the original owner got his stolen ATV back. The investigation continues con cerning the actual theft of the ATV. (Cases and investigation pending)

No Self Control Sabine County game wardens received information about an individual who allegedly shot a white-tailed buck deer in July, well out of season. An in vestigation led to a search war rant, which resulted in the sei zure of a velvet set of antlers scoring close to 115 inches on the Boone & Crockett scoring system, knives used to process the deer, an ice cooler of meat and another set of antlers off an illegal buck, having an inside spread of less than 13 inches, that was harvested during last year’s deer season. The subject admitted to shooting the deer while hog hunting and said he couldn’t pass on a buck with velvet antlers. The suspect was arrested and several citations issued. (Cases pending)
Tawakoni GOOD. Water lightly stained; 85 degrees; 3.22 feet low. White bass and striped bass are really good troll ing in 9-15 feetof water. Channel catfish bite is red hot and excellent. Catching limits easily by 10 A.M. using punch bait and dip bait fished over baited holes in 25-30 feet of water. Crappie bite is surprisingly good with minnows out fishing jigs. Changing locations frequently to get a nice box of fish. Largemouth bass bite is slow with fish in extremely shallow water at daylight with topwater baits.
Costly Joy Ride Williamson County wardens were patrolling on a county road when an ATV with two riders passed them at a high rate of speed heading the other direction. They turned around and caught up to the pair on the ATV, both minors, and got them stopped. They did not have any safety equipment and were told they could not operate the ATV on the road. Wardens located the VIN and verified that it was a stolen ve hicle from 2014. The operator said it was his friend’s ATV so the wardens told him to get his friend to come get them. While waiting for the friend to show up, one of the wardens con tacted the documented owner, who verified it was his ATV and arrived with paperwork to prove it. The friend finally showed up with his girlfriend, also both minors, and stated the ATV was his. He said he paid $1,000 to a friend in 2014 and has had it since. When asked for his friend’s name and infor mation, he said he only knew his name but did not have any contact information. Wardens then detected the smell of al cohol on the breath of one of the individuals and asked how much he had to drink. He re plied, “None, I don’t drink.”
One of Carolyn’s most valuable assets was her ability to make friends, who were treasured always. Whether she was working, traveling, or taking one of her many chemo treatments, Carolyn was tendering friendships that would last a lifetime. She cherished each one and visited with them by phone, text or email regularly. Carolyn enjoyed playing bridge, entertaining, and she had a flare for setting showstopping tablescapes.Shelovedall things glitzy, whether it was in her sparkling jewelry or her glimmering household furnishings. Her most prized possessions, however, were her beloved friends. Over the years, Carolyn had a number of Yorkies and loved each fur baby dearly. She was a member of First Christian Church in Bonham. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Udell and Zona Brown and her brother, Michael Wayland Brown. Carolyn leaves to cherish her memories, a cousin, Judy Brown Elliott and family of Dallas, Texas, two very special caregivers, and friends too numerous to name. Hello everyone! What a wonderful service we had in God’s house Sunday Themorning!Bible tells us in Galatians 5:1, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” We are definitely living in uncertain times. A lot of different things are going on in our nation, and, I hate to say this, but a lot of it is not good. The good news is that throughout all the problems we are experiencing, one fact remains constant. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. We must hold to His unchanging hand. I am reminded of one of the sweetest moments that I have ever experienced in my life. I was helping out with the care of my grandmother in late 2002. I would stay with here during the day, and either my mother or sister would stay during the night. She was suffering from dementia and was in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s. It was just the two of us, and she started singing the old song “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand.” She didn’t sing very often, but she still had a beautiful voice. I could definitely feel the presence of the Lord there in her living room. That being said, this will be my hymn reference this week. “Time is filled with swift transition. Naught of earth unmoved can stand. Build your hopes on things eternal. Hold to God’s unchanging hand. When your journey is completed, If to God you have been true, Fair and bright the home in glory, Your enraptured soul will view. Hold to God’s unchanging hand, Hold to God’s unchanging hand. Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God’s unchanging hand.” If you are looking for a good church home, we invite you to come visit and worship with us here at Central Baptist Church. Visitors are our honored guests, and we hope to see you this coming Lord’s day!

AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is currently accepting applications for its 66th Texas Game Warden Cadet class. As fully commissioned peace officers, game wardens are responsible for the enforcement of Texas laws across the state, including water safety, natural resource protection and environmental management. Unconstrained by city or county jurisdictions, Texas Game Wardens patrol the state’s natural waterways, oversee hunting and fishing regulations, and often support local landowners. Additionally, game wardens learn specialized skills, making them a reliable resource for disaster response.“TexasGame Wardens have a long and proud tradition of protecting and conserving Texas’ valuable natural resources, including our waterways, landscapes and the wildlife we enjoy daily,” said Col. Chad Jones, TPWD Law Enforcement Director who stressed that the role of a game warden goes beyond the badge. “Not only are game wardens trained in a number of specialized fields like search and rescue and disaster response, but they’re also active members of the communities they serve. Game wardens are out in neighborhoods hosting fishing events, educating boaters and encouraging another generation of Texans to enjoy and preserve the outdoors.”TPWD will accept applications through Sept 30. Applicants must be 21 years old by the start date of the academy, with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college. For a list of requirements, please visit the Texas Game Warden recruitment webpage. All cadets accepted to the program are required to live at the Game Warden Training Center near Hamilton, Texas for the duration of the 33week training period, set to begin October 2023. For more information, check the game warden career webpage or contact Texas Game Warden recruiter Chelsea Bailey at bailey@tpwd.texas.gov.chelsea.
