Big weekend planned at Powder Creek Pavilion! Powder Creek Pavilion, 520 S. Center St. Bonham, TX. 75418. (903)227-1911 Fri. Sept. 11th 8pm. BoisD’Ark Red! Was formed in Fannin County, Texas just south of the Red River and northwest of Bois D’arc Lake. Right smack dab in the middle of no where. A place surrounded by Bois D’arc Trees, Cedar Valleys, rivers and glimmering lakes sharing bright starlit Texas nights and beautiful Texas sunrises. An uninterrupted place in time that one could refer to as “Bois D’arc Country”. By developing that backwoods
rhythm guitar style and structure (Matt Foreman), driven by that deep flowing upright bass (Joey Bideler), those wildly captivating lead tones and rides (Jeff Sterzer), a hard hitting drum backbone (Mike Cochran) and finally a familiar but unique smooth melody driven country vocal (E.J. Miller). This hodgepodge of local talent has a broad spectrum of influences ranging from Gospel, Texas Country, Outlaw Country, Honky Tonk and Chicken Picking. All the way to Rock, Southern Rock, Rhythm and Blues, Alternative, and even Heavy Metal. Bois D’arc Red offers a sound
with old and new roots, delivering epic highs and deep lows that can and is certain to entertain any crowd. Sat. First United Bank, Bonham will match donations! The Crisis Center is excited to announce Board Member, Alan McDonald, has committed First United Bank of Bonham to match funds up to $1,000.00 for the center on North Texas Giving Day. This has been a most unusual year and sadly we had to cancel our annual dinner and auction in June due to COVID-19. Funds raised at the dinner have traditionally helped with expenses incurred by the center and to help our clients who are victims of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and other violent crimes. Client needs have not stopped and in some cases they have increased. Jobs have been lost and many parents have had to work less hours to take care of their families at home. We continue to help as much as possible. Our office is open 8:30-5, Monday through Friday and our hotline answered 24/7. The number is 903-538-7000. North Texas Giving Day is Sept. 17th. To make a donation you simply follow this link: https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/ fannincountycrisiscenter. Every donation helps and is very appreciated! Thank you for your support First United Bank of Bonham!

How to Fix Damaged Hard Water Hair! 8/25/20
By Jade Anthony Part 2 Using a Chelating shampoo is not the only step into reviving your beautiful hair, but indeed, it is the start. Here’s the next steps to the ultimate transformation from beast to beauty. Use Moisturizing Masks To Revive Your Dry Hair If you’ve been using harsh water for a while, you may notice your hair looking coarse and ragged. This is called high porosity. Unfortunately,
the damage cannot be undone by shampoos only. Give your hair a good lustrous masque treatment to repair the broken fibers. I recommend the Wellness Premium Products Organic Intensive Hair Mask or Deep Hydration Mask. This moisturizing masque will add much needed natural keratin and Omega 3, 6 & 8 Fatty acids to replenish and repair the outer layers of your hair. Do this once a week and see how silky your hair feels.
Upgrade Your Shower Filter To A T3 Besides stocking up on the right shampoos, you’ll be crazy not to tackle the problem from the source. If installing a hard water
treatment system is not an option, then use a T3 hard water softener in your shower. It’s easy to install, and you’ll feel the difference right away. The T3 is like having a Brita for your shower! This shower filter can be purchased at your local hardware stores.

who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. II Timothy 2:15 Six days you shall labor and do all your work. Exodus 20:9 Labor Day weekend is an opportunity for much of our workforce to enjoy a little breather from the routines of their job. To all of us, retired and workers alike, it challenges us to
reevaluate our work ethic. God is interested in us being one of His approved workers. As early in God’s word as Exodus 20:9, we are given principles related to both working and resting that God used in His creation of the world. Two of the Ten Commandments give us a pattern to follow. A good work ethic begins with this concept.

Fannin County Commissioners Court Holds Special Meeting
By Tim Meek
6/11/19 discussion

COUN
A special meeting was held by the Fannin County Commissioners Court on Monday, August 31, 2020. Agenda item #3 was for Discussion, consideration and action to delete the fulltime Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) from the list of approved positions and replace with one part-time position at 26 hours per week and one part-time position at 4 hours per week – County Judge” Judge Moore began the
on the agenda item by explaining very clearly, for the benefit of the Commissioners and those in attendance, the reasoning behind repeating this agenda item from the previous week’s Commissioners meeting. Judge Moore explained that due to a possible violation of the Open Meetings Act, he cannot have conversations with the Commissioners prior to the Official Commissioners Court Meeting about an agenda item. He cannot call them up ahead of the meeting to discuss, so there are situations

where the Commissioners will be unaware of the5/7/19 reason or the thought process behind a given proposal. Keith Whiteside, McKinney Fireman with 23 years of experience informed the Court on the specifics of Judge Moores proposal. With a part time Emergency Management Coordinator, working 26 hours per week and another part time assistant as a back up at 4 hours per week there would be no need for a full time Emergency Management Coordinator. Mr. Whiteside discussed: There would be a financial impact, a reduction in cost for the County vs a full time Emergency Management Coordinator, the response capability would be still be 7 days a week, current technology allows for a fast response, communications could possibly be an issue in the remote areas of the County however technology is available to minimize that issue through backup communications. The part time position would be able to prepare, respond and coordinate an incident regardless of the time, just as effective as a full time Emergency Management Coordinator. The ensuing discussion by the Commissioners centered
around concern of not having a full time Emergency Management Coordinator, as the County has had in the past. The discussion and consensus from the Commissioners was that fast reaction to an emergency would be lost with a part time Emergency Management Coordinator. Judge Moore appreciated the opportunity the Commissioners gave him to revisit the subject and declined to ask for a motion on the agenda item. Judge Moore then announced and thanked Danny Loyd as the new Director of the CERT Team, which currently has 30 plus active members. Danny has outstanding qualifications and Judge Moore expounded about the many excellent leaders we have in our community. #4 EXECUTIVE SESSION: Deliberation Regarding Contract Being Negotiated – a closed meeting will be held pursuant to §551.0725 of the Government Code for deliberation regarding business and financial issues in relation to contract(s) being negotiated where as an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the position of the Commissioners Court in negotiations with a third person – regarding City
of Bonham EMS Contract – County Judge #5 Discussion, consideration and action regarding Executive Session – County Judge Judge Moore’s response to the Executive Session was that the EMS contract has been reviewed and sent to the City of Bonham and that progress was being made. #6 Discussion regarding 2020/2021 positions and salaries – County Judge #7 Discussion, consideration and action regarding 2020/2021 Fiscal Year Budget for Fannin County - County Judge Agenda #6 and #7 were discussions about specific line items on the 2020/2021 Fiscal Year Budget. Some of the items for discussion were: •Possible pay raise of .25 cents per hour for full time County employees. •Possible outsourcing of janitorial services •No budget for cell phones During a regular session set for 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 1st the Commissioners will vote to approve the budget and set a Public Hearing for September 22 to hear public comments and then vote to adopt the budget.

Letter To The Editor
REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 By Louis E. Holmes
Friday September 11th will be the 19th anniversary of the attack on America by Islamic terrorists and a day etched in the memory of many Americans, but also forgotten by many. America experienced her most horrifying day since Dec. 7, 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. On September 11, 2001 terrorists attacked our country using hijacked American and United Airline passenger planes, crashing them into the World Trade Center in
New York City killing thousands of people and crashing a plane into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It is believed this plane was headed for the White House. Americans were both shocked and horrified by the sights they saw that day on television. Never have we seen on live television airliners loaded with people crashing into buildings. Never have we seen 110 story buildings burning at the top then collapsing into a heap of rubble killing thousands. Never have we seen on live television people
jumping to their death from tall buildings. Never have we seen Lower Manhattan in a cloud of dust, fire and smoke. Never have we seen firemen, police officers and paramedics rush into burning buildings to rescue people only to have the building collapsing on them. Never have we seen News Journalists who make their living describing such events were left without words. The scenes of destruction, death and devastation impacted all of us in an unforgettable way and brought us into a different kind of war. September 11, 2001 did four things for America. 1. It brought us out of a stage of lethargy and indifference.
We Insure Mobile Homes! Some insurance companies are “running for the hills” and canceling mobile home policies because the home is “too old” or “out in the country.” Not us! If you have a mobile home, we want your business today!

2. It brought out the American flag showing American pride. 3. It brought America to
church praying for American and the victims. 4. It brought us together as one nation under God
with a new sense of pride being an American. How soon we forget!

By Jennifer Dorsett Field Editor A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts U.S. agricultural exports to increase to $140.5 billion for fiscal year (FY) 2021, driven largely by higher exports of soybeans and corn. The projected figure is an increase of $5.5 billion from the latest FY 2020 export prediction, which was lowered to $136 billion due to reductions in horticultural, beef, veal and soybean exports. “There’s no doubt the coronavirus pandemic has had a real and lasting impact on Texas and American agriculture,” Brant Wilbourn, Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) associate director of Commodity and Regulatory Activities, said. “Farmers and ranchers are looking forward to putting this fiscal year behind them and starting fresh on Oct. 1. There are a variety of commodities we grow and export here in Texas that USDA has predicted to increase in FY 2021. That’s something to hold onto as farmers bring in this year’s harvest and make planting decisions for the upcoming crop year, and ranchers may see a little light at the end of the tunnel, too.” Canada, Mexico and China are expected to lead the way in importing U.S. commodities, with Canada projected to import $21 billion worth of agricultural goods. Mexico and China are predicted to import $19.3 billion and $18.5 billion, respectively. Soybean export volume is anticipated to rise nearly 30 percent year-over-year, according to the report, which noted soybeans are the main driver behind increased ex-

ports to China. “Agricultural exports to China are forecast at $18.5 billion, an increase of $4.5 billion from FY 2020,” USDA wrote. “Demand for soybeans is expected to grow while Brazilian supplies are forecast to decline, boosting U.S. soybean export prospects. Continued strong demand for corn, sorghum and tree nuts also contributes to the higher forecast.” U.S. grain and feed exports are forecast to increase $1.1 billion to $31.0 billion on higher corn, sorghum and rice exports, but USDA said wheat exports are forecast to decline. “Russia’s second-largest wheat crop on record is likely to limit U.S. competitiveness in price-sensitive markets,” the agency stated. “The prospect of continued shipments to China is a bright spot for U.S. wheat trade, but exports to other Asian countries could be affected by large exportable supplies in Australia and Canada.” Corn exports are projected at $9 billion in 2021, up $700 million on expectations of competitive prices and larger export volumes. The strong pace of shipments to China has sorghum exports increasing to $1.4 billion, up $400 million from FY 2020. Livestock, poultry and dairy exports are also expected to increase in FY 2021 to $32.3 billion, mainly based on growth in the beef, poultry and dairy sectors. Despite a decline in unit values, U.S. beef exports are up $200 million on higher volumes, and poultry and poultry product exports should show a modest gain of $100 million in 2021. In its report, USDA cautioned pork exports will slow due to China’s rebuilding of hog herds after a devastating and long-lasting African swine fever outbreak, but overall pork exports are expected to remain unchanged. Texas’ top row crop, however, did not receive such a positive outlook. According to USDA trade data, FY 2021 cotton exports are forecast at $5 billion, down $400 million from 2020 due to lower volumes from a smaller crop and increased foreign competition. “COVID-19 has rippled through the entire cotton industry,” Wilbourn said. “A worldwide economic slowdown combined with recordlevel stocks hasn’t been kind to cotton prices lately. Textile mills and manufacturers aren’t back to operating at their normal capacity yet, and that’s reflected in both current and futures prices in the cotton market.”

Game Warden Field Notes
Bad Idea, This is A Hays County game warden received an image from a cellphone game camera showing a man and woman trespassing and digging an archeological Native American burial site. The warden went to the property and found the couple in a large hole previously dug by trespassers. Before the warden could say anything, the man stood up immediately and said he wasn’t digging for arrowheads and hates diggers. The couple were husband and wife out on a date. They were both detained in handcuffs and separated at the front and back of the warden’s vehicle. The man admitted that he had a glass pipe in his pocket that he uses to smoke CBD oils. After a quick examination, the Baby Yoda glass pipe revealed small, clear and white crystals that looked like crystal meth. The warden placed the pipe on the hood and went to the back of the vehicle to speak with the woman. She said she didn’t know the property was private, despite walking past multiple no-trespassing signs. The warden then walked back to the front of the vehicle and noticed the pipe was no longer on the hood. The man said he didn’t know where the pipe went. Several feet in front of the vehicle, the pipe was found broken in half in the middle of a fresh footprint. Upon further examination of the hole where the couple was found, the warden found a small hand saw and freshly disturbed dirt. The woman’s purse contained several gray rubber gardening gloves, each containing four Native American artifacts. The San Marcos Police Department took the couple to the Hays County Jail. While en route to jail, the man said he believed he had the coronavirus. He leaned forward against the partition and aggressively coughed toward the officers. Both subjects were charged with criminal trespass and Antiquities Code violations. The husband was also charged with possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence and harassment of a public servant. Cases pending.

You Can’t See Me A Karnes County game warden was on patrol when he noticed a deputy’s patrol vehicle on the side of the road near the San Antonio River bridge. The deputy approached the warden and told him that there was a truck that had been there for a short while without any occupants. The warden looked in the bed of the truck and found a fishing pole. The deputy and warden looked under the bridge and found two individuals fishing. They watched for a short time to make sure the individuals were both fishing before announcing their presence. When the warden called out to the fishermen, the two individuals squatted down. The warden watched with his binoculars, and both men still didn’t move. The warden called out to them again and told them to stand up. The two men then stood up and came to talk with him. Neither of them had a fishing license and both were issued citations. The Scope of the Problem A Freestone County game warden was contacted by a landowner who said he allowed a man to hunt feral hogs on his property but had killed a deer in addition to the hog. The landowner explained that while driving his property, he found a fresh hog carcass, along with a fresh white-tailed doe. The landowner asked the hunter what happened and was told that he “accidentally shot the doe when he was shooting at a hog.” The warden contacted the man, who admitted to shooting the doe, saying his “scope was off.” Charges include hunting a white-tailed deer in closed season, failing to take hunter education and hunting without a license.
Watts up with that? A Houston and a Trinity County game warden patrolled the Trinity River for fishing violations when they approached a man in a boat who appeared to have casually thrown something into the water upon seeing them. Wardens contacted the boat and asked the man what he threw. He denied having thrown anything into the water but one of the wardens recognized him from years ago when he had been caught shocking fish. The man eventually said that he threw a small fish back into the water, but it was later determined by wardens to be wires. Wardens located a shocker still running inside a battery box. While one of the wardens was attempting to open the battery box, the man said that if the box was that hard to get into, the shocker probably wasn’t in there. Several cases have been filed and evidence was seized. On the Fence A Colorado County game warden received a call of a large alligator that had climbed the fence of a residential home and made itself comfortable in the backyard. The game warden, along with a DPS Trooper, were able to capture and relocate the alligator to a safe place outside of town. Guard Gator In Cameron County, game wardens received a call regarding an alligator that was roaming around inside a detention center facility. A facility staff member had reportedly stepped on its tail while exiting his vehicle in the parking lot. With the assistance of the facility staff, the wardens were able to safely relocate the almost 11-foot-long alligator.

North Texas Giving Day is Back in Fannin County! Press Release - North Texas Giving Day is set for September 17, 2020. This year marks the 12th year of this community wide fundraising event hosted by Communities Foundation of Texas. It is the third year for the event to include Fannin County and a few other counties surrounding Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. More than 3,300 nonprofits are signed up to participate in North Texas Giving Day 2020, including 12 nonprofits in Fannin County.
HELLO FALL! JUST FOR YOU... 9/8/20
10/15/20
9/8/20
Render, the facility dog at the Fannin County Children’s Center, is ready for North Texas Giving Day! Organizations who have registered and serve Fannin County include: Bonham Education Foundation, Bonham Mosaic Church of the Assemblies of God, Fannin County Children’s Center, Fannin County Food Pantry, Fannin County Family Crisis Center, Fannin Health Clinic, Feeding Fannin, Kool Lunches Program, Morning Star Academy, Northeast Texas Trail Coalition, Open Arms Shelter and Willow Wild Foundation. Community members can go to www. northtexasgivingday.org and make donations to many of their favorite charities in one place. Early giving started on September 1 so donors can give anytime between now and midnight on Thursday, September 17. Gifts will support local causes and help build a stronger and more vibrant community. Contributions will also give the participating nonprofits the chances to win prizes and earn bonus funds. Some nonprofits have also secured 1:1 matching funds to make donations stretch even farther. For example, the Fannin County Children’s Center has secured more than $6,000 in matching funds from Warrior Tire, Toyo Tire, Fannin Bank and their board and staff. Funds raised by the Children’s Center will be used to build a new, larger facility that will help children, youth and families for years to come. North Texas Giving Day provides an opportunity for everyone to be a philanthropist. Every gift, no matter what size matters. When many people give together, the impact is even greater. North Texas Giving Day is a communitywide celebration and an event that lifts up giving by engaging the entire community to support local nonprofits, celebrating their important role in strengthening the region. It is also an efficient way for charitable organizations to raise funding for critical services to support North Texans. For more about North Texas Giving Day and the 12 participating nonprofits in Fannin County and to make your gifts, go to www.northtexasgivingday.org.

Press Release - It is time to sign up for the Fifth Annual Do It For Nick (DI4N) 5K and Color Fun Run. The run, which was originally supposed to be in May 2020, has been rescheduled for October 17. Participants who signed up for the race in May are already registered for the October race. Nick Capehart loved to cheer and had dreams of cheering in college. After his life was tragically cut short by a car accident, family and friends organized this race to remember him and raise money for cheer scholarships. This scholarship fund was established to keep his legacy living and his love for cheer and tumbling alive in others who love the sport as much as he did. Fourteen scholarships have been awarded since 2015. The DI4N (Do It for Nick) 5K and Color Fun Run will be Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Bonham Civic Center (Armory) at 1100 West Fifth Street in Bonham. On-site registration will begin at 7 am. The 5k race will start at 8:00 am and the Fun Run will start at 8:15 am. The awards ceremony is scheduled to start at 9:30 am. Awards will be given to the top overall finishers in male & female divisions, as well as top male and female finishers in each age group. Nick’s favorite color was red. For fun this year, prizes will be given to one child and one adult who are the Best Spirited Dressed In Red. Prizes will also be given to one child and one adult who are the Most Spirited Cheerleaders. There will also be a silent auction at the race. Registration is open now at www.raceroster.com. Entry fee is $25 for the 5K and $15 for the Color Fun Run if registered by September 30. For those who want to contribute but cannot make it to the event, there is an option to sign up for the “Virtual Run.” Registering with this option costs $30 and includes a t-shirt, delivered by mail. All proceeds from the race and silent auction will benefit The Nicholas Capehart Memorial Cheer Scholarship Fund. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. For more information, contact Jennifer Kirkpatrick at 903-2272401/ jenkirk72@gmail.com or Sherry Capehart at 903814-8299/ scapehart71@ gmail.com.

Honey Grove Rancher Remembers 9-11 Pentagon Attack asap” “Our escorts walked us
Press Release - When you see Jim Mills around this part of North Texas at the sale barn or feed store or some other place related to ranching, his boots and jeans don’t give any clues to the fact that 19 years ago he was the commander of an Air Force fighter wing and on that infamous day in September 2001 he was in the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 175 struck the building killing 177 people. His recall of that day is crystal clear however, and his jaw still gets clenched in anger and sadness when the story is told. The Texas A&M Commerce University War and Memory Project interviewed Colonel Mills a couple of years ago and his story is documented in video in their archives. He described that experience: “Air Force Commanders are required to go to Washington D.C. every year to visit with their congressional delegations and brief the combat readiness of their units and provide an overall annual status report.” “This was my fourth annual trip as the commander of the 926th Fighter Wing, Joint Base New Orleans. The vice commander who had been announced as my replacement attended, since I was moving to Ft Worth as the Chief of Staff of 10th Air Force.” “Before we met with the Senators and Congressmen a briefing was required on what we could and could not talk about, we called it the (do’s and don’ts briefing). “On the morning of Sep-
tember 11 we took the Metro to the Pentagon and arrived at 0845, we met our escorts and got through security and made it up to the 5th floor to get the briefing.” “On the way, we ran into a buddy from Vietnam who was now a General. He asked me if a had heard about the the airplane crashing into one of the twin towers in New York? I said no we had been on the Metro headed up for a briefing.” “He related the Joint Chiefs Battle Staff was convening in “the tank” and he was on the way down there.” “We were in our seats by 0925 for the 0930 briefing which began on time with introductions and an overview of the subject matter.” “At 0937 we heard a loud aircraft engine noise followed by a tremendous explosion and that gigantic building shook.” “I had been through numerous rocket and mortar attacks and even been within 200 meters of an aircraft blowing up with six 500lb bombs loaded after being struck by a rocket but this sound was different and very strange. “We found out later that we were about two thirds of the way on the other side of the building from the impact” “Smoke alarms began to sound and our escorts immediately began to urge us to come with them to evacuate.” “ I asked if we should go to the scene and try to help, The major general in charge of our briefing ordered us to go with our escorts and get out of the building
out of the building filled with smoke and debris. We were able to help several ladies who were very upset to walk south a few blocks to safety ”. Our escort was a wonderful civilian young woman who was determined to walk us the 14 blocks to where we were staying, She had young children and was very concerned, As soon as we cleared the Pentagon parking lot, I ordered her to go home, she said but I might get in trouble for leaving you. I just said , “Really.” “ I will never forget about half way to the hotel two F-16s at about 100 feet off the ground came roaring by in full afterburner below the Washington Monument headed north, I found out later, they were bound to intercept United flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania.” “On the way to the hotel I used my Satellite phone to call my boss at 10th Air Force in Ft Worth to give an update and get any information he might have”. “His orders were to get back to my unit the best way you could but to not expect any aircraft support for awhile.” “I told him my plan was to keep our rent a car and drive back to New Orleans starting in about 10 minutes.” “His further orders were to get home and start getting your airplanes ready to deploy for war, that he did not know what we were dealing with but that it would involve putting fire and steel on target at some point” “I gave my guys 5 minutes to pack their bags and get down to the rent a car because we were heading south asap.” “All of them beat 5 minutes and we were headed out of Alexandria Virginia on the backroads in short order. I-95 was backedup but we had good maps and GPS devices and made it to Charlotte, North Carolina that night and New Orleans before dark the next day. “I have always felt guilty that we couldn’t go to the scene and help that day, but it helped in October when the bombs started falling in Afghanistan and I felt even better when the “Cajuns” from my unit in New Orleans took their A-10 Warthogs to Kabul, Afghanistan and took the fight directly to the perpetrators of 9-11.” “In two tours in Vietnam
I had been through lots of rocket and mortar attacks, including my airplane being hit by anti aircraft fire. It wasn’t fun, but it was war.” “The 9-11 attacks to me were in a different category. These were chicken crap cowards who attacked innocent civilians on American soil”. “The fighter pilots in my wing were so charged up it was difficult to get them to go home at night and wait for orders.” “We were angry and I am still angry and I will die angry.” “9-11 was a pitiful cowardly
heinous act against defenseless Americans. I guess we have learned a little. I hope we never lose the feelings
we had on 9/11 because the people that attacked us are still out there waiting for another opportunity.”

THE
DEMOCRATIC SIDE
“Without prefix, without suffix, and without apology, I am a Democrat!” -- Speaker Sam Rayburn
TEAMWORK MATTERS “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.” --Coach Vince Lombardi In early September, when teams typically prepare for football season, the coaches will create a cohesive team roster and inform the players when to report to the field house. Upon arrival, the players will quickly reestablish a spirit of comradery and excitedly receive their uniforms, shoulder pads, and helmets with protective face masks. A unified team trusts their coaches to make wise decisions to keep them safe throughout the coming season, and would never hear the head coach say, “You can wear your helmet with the face mask if you want, or not. It’s your choice.” This 2019-2020 school year, which started as usual, turned out to be extremely abnormal in mid-March when Covid-19 forced schools to discontinue normal classroom instruction. Never has teamwork, such as that modeled by effective coaches, teachers, and leaders, been more essential than now! A winning team effort requires that we all follow the advice of medical experts to wear face masks, maintain social distance, wash our hands, sterilize surfaces and avoid unnecessary gatherings. Although Texas, as of Monday, August 31, 2020, has reported a total of 12,536 Covid-19 deaths and 612,969 statewide cases, it is apparent that many current State and U.S. elected officials continue to downplay the coronavirus pandemic rather than exert necessary leadership. “We the People,” however, can unify, create a new game plan, and use the power of our votes to hire a new “Head Coach” capable of leading our team to victory over this insidious virus! --Coach Roger Ellis
DIRTY WORDS PART 2 “SOCIALISM”
“Socialism is a scare word they have hurled at every advance the people have made in the last 20 years. Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called farm price supports. Socialism is what they called bank deposit insurance. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.” --President Harry S. Truman, 1952
WILL WE CHOOSE COURAGE OVER FEAR?
At this frightening juncture in our nation’s history, can we who reside in the United States of America agree to put aside our differences and overcome our fears in order to confront the Covid-19 crisis? Can we acknowledge that White Nationalism has no legitimacy in a Democratic Republic, established by European immigrants on lands already inhabited by indigenous people of color on the American continent? Is it not clear that subsequent migrations representing a wide variety of ethnicities and cultures, in conjunction with the victims of a cruel and immoral African slave trade, have insured a diverse population in the U.S.A.? Should intelligent people appreciate the talents, skills, knowledge, and perspectives inherent in diversity and see that, because we are stronger together, the ideal solutions for combating Covid-19 are those that serve ALL of us? Will we allow divisive fear tactics, such as accusing Democrats of promoting a “Socialist” agenda, to dissuade us from supporting social programs designed to benefit everyone, especially the 48% of the U.S. population who struggle financially, and not just the wealthy? Do we have the capacity and the will to create a society with Liberty and Justice for ALL? --Jacquita Ellis, Educator

By Alicia Whipple I want to clarify and make sure everyone understands what they are looking at. The steel tower that you have seen in photos is not part of the actual Cupola. It is just the base structure that will hold it up. The height that is seen there is the height of the ridge of the roof. The Cupola will sit on
top of that steel and will stand another 55 feet higher. For perspective, from the ground to the gables out is roughly 47 feet. The actual Cupola will be added in late spring 2021. We will be seeing the roof and chimneys taking shape soon. Thanks to Tony Jarecki for this drawing and helping me to explain. I would be lost without his help.

Texas Crop and Weather Report Sept. 1, 2020
CENTRAL Conditions were extremely dry throughout most counties. Triple-digit temperatures increased evapotranspiration in all plant life. Trees were stressed, and any plant not being watered suffered. Some areas received some rainfall, but not enough to turn conditions around. Williamson County reported trace amounts up to 1.5 inches of rain, but most areas received only light rainfall. Irrigated crops looked good. Most native dryland pecan orchards were dropping nuts due to drought stress. Proper and timely management of some pastures allowed them to stay productive despite the heat. Some hay fields greened up, but growth was slow. Cotton was being defoliated, and bolls were open for harvest. Some cotton fields were being harvested, and average yields were expected. Stock tanks were getting low. Corn and sorghum harvests were nearly completed. Some farmers were plowing corn fields. Nearly all counties reported very short soil moisture and poor overall rangeland and pasture conditions. Livestock conditions were fair to poor. EAST Most of the district did not report rains from Hurricane Laura. Many areas were looking forward to relief from drought. Shelby County reported high winds and rain. Damage to their power grid caused a loss of power during and after the storm for hours and days for some. Sabine County reported as much as 6 inches of rain. They also had destructive winds that caused damage to many barns. Pond levels were low and showing signs of low-quality water. Pasture and rangeland conditions were good overall. Subsoil and topsoil conditions were adequate. Hay and vegetable production slowed. Livestock were fair to good. Horn flies were very active. There were reports of armyworms and Bermuda grass stem maggots. Wild pigs continued to damage pasture and hay meadows. NORTH Topsoil moisture throughout the district ranged from very short to adequate. Temperatures were in the upper 90s with sporadic rain. Temperature highs were in the 80s a few days. Most areas received some rainfall from Hurricane Laura, with trace amounts to 2.5 inches reported. Corn was still being harvested but nearly complete. Soybeans that received rain were doing well. Soybeans and cotton in areas that missed rains were struggling. Livestock were in good condition. Spring-born calves were looking good as weaning season approaches. Summer pastures that received rainfall looked good, but drier areas were starting to show signs of drought. Armyworms continued to be a problem in some areas.

considered the peak months when customers see spikes in their water usage due to outdoor watering practices. Water bills are typically higher due to soaring temperatures, while conservation of this natural resource is typically lower. As homeowners and residents close out the summer and enter the cooler months ahead, here are three simple ways to know more, and water less. Understanding where the majority of your water usage occurs It is a common misconception that the majority of water usage comes from indoor needs -- bathing, cooking, drinking water, etc., when it is actually the opposite. The overwhelming majority of water is used for outdoor purposes. Many homeowners use substantial amounts of water for their lawn, to refill a pool and/or hot tub, or to maintain their landscaping and gardens. Nearly 50 percent of landscape water is wasted due to overwatering, inefficient

watering practices, or broken and poorly maintained sprinkler systems. It is important to understand where the largest portion of your monthly water usage comes from to understand the need to conserve the water that North Texans rely on. Consider ways to limit outdoor water usage, like creating a consistent schedule for watering your lawn, landscape, and gardens. The most optimal time to conduct lawn watering is before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. through the months of April through October to minimize evaporation. While most homeowners believe they need to water daily, you generally only need to water once or potentially twice weekly. Should weather predict a rain shower in the forecast, skip your watering day and then determine if a second day is needed. With North Texas clay soils, water your lawn deeply and infrequently to help the roots grow deeper into the soil. This cycle-soak method provides a hardier lawn. Small changes can also be implemented indoors to use water efficiently. Purchasing low-flow fixtures for your bathroom and WaterSense labeled clothes and dishwashers will contribute to reducing water usage.
Additionally, utilizing your dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand will decrease the amount of water being wasted in the kitchen. Make seasonal changes to your water usage routine Your wardrobe shouldn’t be the only thing that changes with the season. Proper water usage needs to be refreshed as we move from the summer into fall. As lawns go dormant with the cooler weather, homeowners can turn off their sprinkler systems until spring. Seasonal temperatures and rain make it possible to pause on all irrigation. Additionally, only potted plants and other winter annuals need occasional watering during the colder months. The colder seasons are also a great time to examine your irrigation system and indoor appliances. Consider upgrading to more waterefficient products and appliances while they are being used less frequently. Maintaining proper water conservation practices for years to come Water is a resource that many take for granted. At the rate the North Texas area is growing, the population is expected to double in 50 years, making water conservation that much

more important today. Conservation stretches the use of existing supplies – when you use water wisely and efficiently, it allows water districts to delay or fully eliminate costly projects. Water consumption in North Texas has increased significantly in the last two years. Based on reports from the North Texas Municipal Water District, water consumption volumes are up 13.5 billion gallons from 2018-2019 to 2019-2020. If every household saved just 20 gallons of water, which is equivalent to a roughly four to five-minute shower or running your faucet for 10 minutes while doing the dishes, North Texas would save 36 million gallons of water per day. Every drop counts! There are also free tools that consumers can utilize. For example, the Texas A&M Extension Service recently launched the WaterMyYard app available for download on Google Play and iTunes. The WaterMyYard app helps homeowners keep track of when and how much to water in order to maintain a healthy lawn. Water conservation is an important resource that all North Texans should be proactively thinking about daily, not just during the peak water usage months or when the area is in a drought. It is up to us as homeowners and residents to ensure that our natural resources are sufficient for years to come. Head to www.NTMWD.com to learn more about what you can do in the short and longterm to conserve water for your community.

Technology Academy Grant
Bonham, TX — The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) recently awarded funding to the Bonham Public Library under its Library Technology Academy program. Bonham Public Library will be updating the staff computers, front desk computers, card catalog computer and teen computers. We will also be purchasing new scanners and a new printer for the public computers. This project is just one of 8 library technology grants made possible this year by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act.
“Communities in every corner of Texas will benefit from the resources that have been made available through this list of forward‐ thinking grant proposals.” said TSLAC Director and Librarian Mark Smith. TSLAC awards grants annually, as funding allows. For the 2021 fiscal year, which runs from September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2021, TSLAC has awarded approximately $80,000 in library technology grants. The Library Technology Academy educates and prepares public library staff to be strategic managers of their library’s technology. Each awarded library is charged with designing and imple-
menting a technology project to support the needs of its commu9/8/20 nity. “We are grateful to the IMLS and the federal government for providing this assistance to libraries across Texas as they support their communities in these challenging times,” said Smith. “We were honored to be part of this year’s Technology Academy. We had the opportunity to travel to Austin for a two-day workshop and have online meetings,” said John Hayden, Library Director. “Putting this Technology Plan together is a particularly important part of our mission. Plus. we are excited about the opportunity to update our computers so we can provide more efficient services to our patrons.”

NOTICE OF RECEIPT OF APPLICATION AND INTENT TO OBTAIN WATER QUALITY PERMIT RENEWAL PERMIT NO. WQ0015278001 APPLICATION. North Texas Municipal Water District, P.O. Box 2408, Wylie, Texas 75098, has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to renew Texas Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (TPDES) Permit No. WQ0015278001 (EPA I.D. No. TX0135569) to authorize the discharge of treated wastewater at a volume not to exceed a daily average flow of 500,000 gallons per day. The water treatment facility is located at 2073 Farm-to-Market Road 273, Bonham, in Fannin County, Texas 75418. The discharge route is from the plant site via Outfall 001 or Outfall 002 to an unnamed tributary; thence to Lake Bonham; thence to Timber Creek; thence to Bois d’Arc Creek; thence to Red River below Lake Texoma. TCEQ received this application on July 1, 2020. The permit application is available for viewing and copying at Bonham Public Library, 305 East 5th Street, Bonham, Texas. This link to an electronic map of the site or facility’s general location is provided as a public courtesy and not part of the application or notice. For the exact location, refer to the application. https://tceq.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=db5bac44afbc468bbddd360f8168250f& marker=-96.166388%2C33.640277&level=12 ADDITIONAL NOTICE. TCEQ’s Executive Director has determined the application is administratively complete and will conduct a technical review of the application. After technical review of the application is complete, the Executive Director may prepare a draft permit and will issue a preliminary decision on the application. Notice of the Application and Preliminary Decision will be published and mailed to those who are on the county-wide mailing list and to those who are on the mailing list for this application. That notice will contain the deadline for submitting public comments. PUBLIC COMMENT / PUBLIC MEETING. You may submit public comments or request a public meeting on this application. The purpose of a public meeting is to provide the opportunity to submit comments or to ask questions about the application. TCEQ will hold a public meeting if the Executive Director determines that there is a significant degree of public interest in the application or if requested by a local legislator. A public meeting is not a contested case hearing. OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTESTED CASE HEARING. After the deadline for submitting public comments, the Executive Director will consider all timely comments and prepare a response to all relevant and material, or significant public comments. Unless the application is directly referred for a contested case hearing, the response to comments, and the Executive Director’s decision on the application, will be mailed to everyone who submitted public comments and to those persons who are on the mailing list for this application. If comments are received, the mailing will also provide instructions for requesting reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision and for requesting a contested case hearing. A contested case hearing is a legal proceeding similar to a civil trial in state district court. TO REQUEST A CONTESTED CASE HEARING, YOU MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN YOUR REQUEST: your name, address, phone number; applicant’s name and proposed permit number; the location and distance of your property/activities relative to the proposed facility; a specific description of how you would be adversely affected by the facility in a way not common to the general public; a list of all disputed issues of fact that you submit during the comment period and, the statement “[I/we] request a contested case hearing.” If the request for contested case hearing is filed on behalf of a group or association, the request must designate the group’s representative for receiving future correspondence; identify by name and physical address an individual member of the group who would be adversely affected by the proposed facility or activity; provide the information discussed above regarding the affected member’s location and distance from the facility or activity; explain how and why the member would be affected; and explain how the interests the group seeks to protect are relevant to the group’s purpose. Following the close of all applicable comment and request periods, the Executive Director will forward the application and any requests for reconsideration or for a contested case hearing to the TCEQ Commissioners for their consideration at a scheduled Commission meeting. The Commission may only grant a request for a contested case hearing on issues the requestor submitted in their timely comments that were not subsequently withdrawn. If a hearing is granted, the subject of a hearing will be limited to disputed issues of fact or mixed questions of fact and law relating to relevant and material water quality concerns submitted during the comment period. TCEQ may act on an application to renew a permit for discharge of wastewater without providing an opportunity for a contested case hearing if certain criteria are met. MAILING LIST. If you submit public comments, a request for a contested case hearing or a reconsideration of the Executive Director’s decision, you will be added to the mailing list for this specific application to receive future public notices mailed by the Office of the Chief Clerk. In addition, you may request to be placed on: (1) the permanent mailing list for a specific applicant name and permit number; and/or (2) the mailing list for a specific county. If you wish to be placed on the permanent and/or the county mailing list, clearly specify which list(s) and send your request to TCEQ Office of the Chief Clerk at the address below. INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE. For details about the status of the application, visit the Commissioners’ Integrated Database at www.tceq.texas.gov/goto/cid. Search the database using the permit number for this application, which is provided at the top of this notice. AGENCY CONTACTS AND INFORMATION. Dodd City rose in the Class 1A-2A volleyball rankings by the Texas Girls Coaches Association on Aug. 31. The 1A Lady Hornets, who ended August at 5-0, improved five spots to No. 5 in the combined poll, where
Iola now leads the rankings which expanded to include the top 15 teams this week. Meanwhile, Leonard again garnered a mention outside of the 3A poll where Bushland remained on top. Gunter and Pottsboro, District 11-3A opponents now for Leonard and Bonham, also received mentions in 3A.

A mix of players from last season’s inaugural eighth-grade squad and newcomers from the girls high school athletic program composed the teams for Sam Rayburn which will play its first high school district volleyball
matches on Sept. 8 at Savoy. The Lady Rebels, who competed in junior-high district volleyball -- seventh and eighth grade teams -- in the inaugural year for the sport at the school in 2019, will vie for the next two seasons in the new 16-2A: Collinsville, Tioga, Tom Bean, Trenton, Wolfe City, Dodd City (1A) and Savoy (1A).
