THESIS PROPOSAL

Location

RMIT City Campus Swanston Street Melbourne

Melbourne - a vibrant & engaging city, is a 180 years old city that is built upon a rich layer of historical & cultural background. In the heart of the city reveals the city’s civic spine- the Swanston Street; positioned directly in the middle of the Hoodle Grid that bridges the main north-south end of the city together, through the Central Business District [CBD]. This singular axis holds a historically symbol to the city’s wealthy development, and also houses Melbourne’s lavish collection of distinctive architecture. Yet,it’s often questioned - “What is the Melbourne’s landmark?” Landmark is, after-all, a prominent locality representation of a city. As defined by Lynch [1960], “the key physical character of this class is singularity, some aspect that is unique or memorable in the context.”

This singular axis holds a historically symbol to the city’s wealthy development, and also houses Melbourne’s lavish collection of distinctive architecture. Yet,it’s often questioned - “What is the Melbourne’s landmark?” Landmark is, afterall, a prominent locality representation of a city. As defined by Lynch [1960], “the key physical character of this class is singularity, some aspect that is unique or memorable in the context.” Based on the Heritage of Melbourne report (2001); “Recent efforts to provide Melbourne with a ‘Landmark’ precinct, feature or building have failed to understand that Melbourne’s most valued heritage is a subtle blend of spatial influences and physical structure from its whole history.” This, which then question: Can architecture represent ‘ Singularity is a plural’, in a built form, through the hypothesis of defining Melbourne’s (diverse) identity in the form of connecting the various landmarks as one?

Footscray Library Footscray, Victoria

Libraries have evolved from historically a place for collection & preservation of collection of materials; books, periodicals and sometimes films and recorded music for the use of borrowing by the public to a ‘service-rich environment that supports today’s social and educational patterns of learning, teaching and research’. The supremacy of books had been challenged by the digital revolution, leading us to question ourselves: what is the typology of library when people can access information from anywhere and anytime now (when it no longer function similarly to the conventions of the institution)?

The new Footscray Library is no longer just a functional container but a new local cultural icon that symbolizes the multi-intellectual regeneration of the contemporary ‘spirit of the age’ of the growing society.

Location

Inner Melbourne City, Swanston Street, Melbourne

And let us fall into slumber, hibernate into our unconscious and re-calibrate the recesses of our delirium. Into the realm of the Melbourne Streetscrapes, where insanity greets us at every other corner, peeling back slowly the layers of disclosed secrets. Let the city speak and guide us in the midst of the invisible indulgence and surrealism. Seducing us into imperceptible spaces; bestowing upon us the moments where we escape from our banality of our everyday life... Into the existence of another, the hotel of the mind. Where, Architecture is the language. Space is the dialogue. Body is the instrument. Our mind is the architect.

Prelude Man sits on his ordinary cubicle. Surrounded by four suffocating walls. An overwhelming feeling of emptiness Has penetrated him. And there is no escape. He craves for something different. Something different. The clock stricks seven. Dragging their bodies forward. No Smiles, no eye contact. Surrounded by the overwhelming buildings, Man feels caged away from normality.

He grooves to the rhythm of the music. As he eats, He feels smaller. When he drinks, He feels taller. Confused, He continue eating and drinking And eating And drinking..... Pushing the indulgences into his throat. Eventually, He stops and falls to the ground. Suddenly, The space begins to spin.

THIS IS A Temporary Transition: Living In-between Spaces PUBLIC SPACE. RESIDENTIAL (HOTEL).

Abstract Night Montage

2013

Studio E MSD

Location

Section 8 27 - 29 Tattersalls Ln Melbourne, Vic 3000

Section 8, itself, is an existing place in the site. This hangout is a microcosm representation of the Melbourne City. The essence of Section 8 — a social-culture where people gather and relax reflects the character of Melbourne. This leads to my conceptual design position of emphasizing this unique characteristic of Melbourne. The introduction of Apart-Hotel is a representation of non-place; a temporary space of familiarity of one’s own home - feeling a sense of ownership, that evokes the visitors to correlate Melbourne and living like the locals. This leads me to the concept of ‘Ma Space’ — an interval between 2 or more spatial or temporal things and events. It is part of a transition from a place (existing Site - Section 8) to a non-place (Melbourne’s City home). My ultimate design concept is to utilize this interval of ‘Living in-between spaces to enhance an individual’s experience of the journey of knowing Melbourne to living in the city.

in this manifesto,

My proposition of this manifesto is address the importance of the concept of art and function in the role of public art and public space, as it is essentially the key driving factor for the future of a city, by allowing it to obtain or reinforce its own individualurban identity. The form of art emphasises and features the aesthetic significance, while the other essential practical elements function to meet the general necessity with the public as a utilitarian entity. It is the notion of

i am proposing to work in collaboration with Victoria Metro Trains to connect all 206 railway stations within the state, through the form of public art – connecting the art and the public spaces together to further boast the very best of Victoria’s well-known characteristic of creative vitality, strengthening the country’s strong sense of identity.

“ art plus function” (Harriet,1992:62) that intimately groups all the numerous public art projects as one. An individual connects with the spatial area is fundamentally perceived as the outcome through the specific experience. Therefore,by concentrating on those areas which can instantly allow the individual to experience, that is subjectively significant.

Public art is the vital element of development of a distinct and culturally engaging environment. With its diverse representational definitions and forms, it is a dynamic and vibrant expressive element that can generate public awareness that would help to drive and distinguish the unique identity of a city. By developing and boosting the local public culture, public art, essentially, functions as a catalyst for the future of progressing establishment of a better city.

With a site-specific art in everyday locations, my proposed series of interactive installation of public art across the states, looking into the forgotten void spaces within the individual suburb areas, By installaing locally representative form of art within those spaces, it enables and allows the individual local community to contribute and engage with it, such as touching and sitting on the art. By doing so, this makes the art to be more easily accessible and relatable to the active locals – allowing them to not just admire it from afar but also participate within the site spaces.

Do we produce an exhibition each time when there is a new theme? Or do we allow a set-up which its exhibition contents can be changed? If a systematic archival system can be set up right at the beginning, could that create a more useful and lasting spatial design? The spatial design hence focuses on the museum narrative backbone and the experience effect. The design is the backdrop with props, and is only completed through the additional of digital materials and actions of the visitors: the retrieval of a token from a selected red cross box, the playing of the sound recordings, the projection of images, the role-playing of games..... “A search for a new library” is a reseach and design exercise to find out the future learning settings in a primary school. By understanding new concepts of learning, the culture of the school, libraries and learning environments worldwide, we design a gameboard with actors and props. Through real and new scenario speculations, props which could enhance interactions and facilitate learning are created. A book street, a cocoon, a forest, a whispering channel, a stage, a measuring device, a time capsule... It is a dream landscape. It is also where small exchanges start to happen. “The essentials for living are floor and roof. Everything else is proportion and nature. Whether the house pleases or not is inconsequential” - Mies This project was completed as part of a landscape architecture course. The final assignment given was to redevelop an ideal living environment for the rebuild of the Fansworth House in the assigned location - Maribymong Expo. Existing constrains of the site were also taken into consideration, such as the key problem of flooding. The Final design aimed to create an engaging and exciting experience for the users while travelling uphill to the hidden Fansworth House. To highlight the relationship of the site and the house, we proposed an ambition aim of visually ‘covering’ the House with a green roof-top, to emphasize the uneven sloppiness of the Maribymong Expo.
