ool weather, rain, haystacks and pumpkins, harvest moons, kids back in school, shorter days, longer nights…as we celebrate the changing of the seasons in East Texas we have so much to be thankful for in our small corner of the world. Before we know it, Thanksgiving will be here with its annual reminder to take stock of the multitude of blessings each of us enjoys. With the chaos and suffering we witness in so much of the world, we can’t help but be mindful of the privilege we have to live in peace.

But that doesn’t mean we are without challenges or that people here in our region do not suffer and need our assistance. And that is why I’m so grateful every day for the generosity of our donors, employees and staff at Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics. The magnitude of the gifts that are shared by you with your donations of time and treasure are truly beyond measure. How can we count the joy on the face of a child treated and cured in the Children’s Center at Mother Frances Hospital? How can we quantify the impact of the neonatal intensive care unit on the lives of parents, grandparents and all those who love the tiny infants cared for daily by the skilled nurses and physicians in the NICU? Is there any way to know how many lives will be impacted by the millions of dollars donated to Trinity Mother Frances Foundation this year for the Heart Fund, Cancer Fund, Children’s Miracle Network, Women’s Center and other centers of care at Trinity Mother Frances? As you review our Annual Report, keep in mind these images that can’t be measured – the caring touch, the kind word, the gentle smile, the listening ear offered daily to our patients by the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, and by the nurses, physicians, therapists and volunteers at Trinity Mother Frances. This year I am particularly mindful of and grateful for the service of Gifford Eckhout, MD, whom we honor in this issue of the The Spirit of Giving. We all extend our deepest sympathy to his family. We are inspired by his legacy of commitment to medical excellence and compassionate care and his dedication to the mission of Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics. Above all, I am grateful for every single donor to Trinity Mother Frances Foundation. The child who saves pennies to help other children, the grateful patient who anonymously writes a check to honor a nurse or doctor who made a difference in their lives, the generous donor who includes Trinity Mother Frances Foundation in their estate plan…each of you make a gift from the heart that will touch the lives of thousands for years to come. 2014 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Texas Champion
I
f you’re lucky enough to meet Will, you know you’ve met someone special. Not only is this charming 6-year-old devilishly handsome and strikingly clever, he’s also got a heart as big as Texas. And that’s fitting, because on May 14, this remarkable boy was named the 2014 Children’s Miracle Network Champion for our state. The honor came as no surprise to the legion of fans Will, a congenital quad amputee, has collected in his short life. Serving as the 2012 Miracle Child for Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics at age 4, he won the hearts of thousands of East Texans with his amazing smile and can-do spirit that continue to help him overcome hand and feet differences that would slow down others, but not him. Before birth, Will was diagnosed with Hanhart syndrome, a rare birth defect that affected all of his limbs. He was born without feet and with partially-formed hands, but with the help of prosthetics, he’s as active and agile as any boy his age. Will enjoys soccer and other sports, and never seems to run out of energy.
As Texas’ Ambassador, he is participating in local, state and national events as an advocate for charitable giving to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the nation. He and his family will attend the annual Children’s Miracle Network meeting at Walt Disney World in Orlando and visit the White House in Washington, DC, along with the 51 other state Ambassadors. The 2014 Champions program is presented by Delta Air Lines, Marriott International and Chico’s FAS. “We are overjoyed in this recognition for Will and his wonderful family,” said Robin Rowan, Children’s Miracle Network Director at TMFHC. “It’s an incredible honor for us and he will be an amazing Ambassador.” Will’s parents, Katy and Reagan Butts and his grandparents, Julie and Tom Brown, all of Tyler, founded the Miracles Begin With You! event that has raised over $150,000 for Children’s Miracle Network since 2012. In 2011, Will and his younger sister Ellie, who also has a rare disorder that limits the range of motion in her joints, were both named Miracle Children at Trinity Mother Frances. Will receives his medical care at the Special Needs Clinic at Trinity Mother Frances that serves medically challenged pediatric patients. The clinic is the only one of its kind between Dallas and Shreveport and treats more than 500 children. $1.2 Million for Life-saving Pediatric Care
E
very July the Children’s Miracle Network Community Advisory Committee meets to review requests from departments of Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics for lifesaving equipment and specialized programs and services. Their task is to allocate funds raised from the annual Children’s Miracle Network Telethon to help provide excellent care for our pediatric patients. This year the Committee approved purchases totaling $1.2 million of new technology and equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Children’s Center, Child Life Program and the Special Needs Clinic, among others. A special thanks to all Committee members for your service!

he 27th annual Children’s Miracle Network Telethon closed on June 1 with a record-breaking $1,035,408 in funding for equipment, programs and services for our tiniest patients. Hundreds of tireless volunteers, generous local and national sponsors, outstanding media partners, miracle children and their families, volunteers and employees of Trinity Mother Frances, and the many dedicated supporters of Children’s Miracle Network helped make this possible for the children served at Trinity Mother Frances. Since 1988, $12,554,669 has been raised through generous gifts to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

hange can be exciting and lead to great accomplishments. This year, the change in venue of the annual Pearls and Promises Gala inspired the Women’s Board of Trinity Mother Frances Foundation to reach their goal of raising almost $250,000 for Women’s Services at Trinity Mother Frances.
The event garnered a total of $249,430 for Women’s Services at Trinity Mother Frances, thanks to our generous donors and Gala guests.
With the support of the 2013 Event Chair, Liz Ballard, and Women’s Board President, Mary Lauren Faulkner, the decision was made to host the 9th annual event in April at Willow Brook Country Club.
Serving as the 2015 Gala Co-chairs are Beth Whitney and Leesa Hedge. The committee has already begun working towards meeting and exceeding the $250,000 goal.

rinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics lost a dedicated leader, a gifted physician and a faithful friend with the passing of Gifford V. Eckhout, Jr., MD, Executive Vice President of TMFHC earlier this year.

A native of Denver, Colorado, Dr. Eckhout graduated from The Colorado College with a B.A. in Chemistry and earned his medical degree from the St. Louis University Medical School. He completed his anesthesiology training at the Cleveland Clinic and later earned an M.B.A. from the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Eckhout excelled in his professional career, serving in leadership positions that impacted patient care and improved outcomes as the Anesthesia Coordinator for over 60 locations within the Cleveland Clinic. He carved a footprint for future physician services by serving as an Assistant Professor, Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and as President, Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists where he was active in advising the United States Congress on legislative affairs. Dr. Eckhout joined Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics as the Chief of Anesthesiology in 2005 where he immediately made an impact by forming and building the Trinity Clinic anesthesia group. He led the implementation of the EPIC electronic health records system within the hospital physician ranks and was a leader in building and opening the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital, ensuring the mission and vision of not only the health system but that of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Sharing his life with his much beloved wife and fellow adventurer Marlise, and their children Ellen and Austin, Dr. Eckhout was a passionate outdoorsman with a lifelong love of nature’s grandeur. “Through his dedication to excellence in health care, he has left a legacy of unmatched compassion for his patients, their families, his co-workers. He had a vision and heart for others to emulate,” said Lindsey Bradley, president, TMFHC. “He was an exceptional physician and embodied the ideal of a servant leader,” said Steven P. Keuer, MD, president and Chief Medical Officer, TMFHC. “He is deeply missed by everyone at Trinity Mother Frances.”

Welcome, New Board Members Thomas Jeffrey “Tom” Brown Trinity Mother Frances Foundation is honored and pleased to announce that Tyler attorney Thomas Jeffrey “Tom” Brown has joined the Board of Directors. A community leader known for his enthusiastic support of dozens of worthy organizations and causes over the past 30 years, Tom Brown is a partner in Brown, Bauman & Smith, specializing in estate planning and business transactions. He is also a certified mediator. “We’re delighted that a man of Tom’s character, knowledge and energy has joined the Board,” said Randy Childress, chairman of TMF Foundation Board. “His professional expertise in estate and wealth planning will be extremely valuable to the Board. In addition, Tom’s passion for public service and boundless energy will be huge assets for the Foundation.” Among his many noteworthy accomplishments and community involvements, Brown has served in leadership roles on many non-profit Boards, but the role of which he is most proud is grandfather of Will and Ellie, who were 2012 Miracle Children at Trinity Mother Frances. Deeply involved in the lives of these amazing children, who both receive care from the Special Needs Clinic at Trinity Mother Frances, Brown says, has heightened his appreciation of the vital services provided East Texans by our System. “The impact of the Trinity Mother Frances Foundation is tremendous in this community,” he says. “I am humbled and pleased to be asked to serve on the Board. With the depth of world-class resources of Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, we can collectively make miracles happen in people’s lives. The reach of the Foundation goes well beyond the children of East Texas in serving many, many people in extraordinary ways. It’s very exciting to be part of this effort.”
Steve Hellmuth Trinity Mother Frances Foundation is pleased to welcome Steve Hellmuth, Senior Vice President, Striping Technology, LP to the Board of Directors. A passionate advocate for children’s causes, Hellmuth has been active for many years with Scottish Rite, Shriner’s Hospital for Children and Children’s Medical Center Dallas, where he established an endowment fund. “We are excited to have a citizen and philanthropist of Steve’s stature to join the Board,” said Randy Childress, President of TMF Board of Directors. “He has been very supportive of Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, particularly our programs for children.” In addition, Hellmuth is a Master Mason, a member of the Sharon Shrine Temple, a Gold Member of the University of Texas at Tyler Classic Society, Co-chair of the UT Tyler Patriot Golf Classic, past president of Tyler Centurion Club, owner of Pier Concepts of Tyler and co-owner of Dakotas Steakhouse. Hellmuth also serves on the State Maintenance Task Force Committee and Traffic Control Pavement Marking Committee of the Texas Association of General Contractors/Heavy Highway Division. “It’s important to me that I spend time and energy where my contributions are going to help people,” Hellmuth said. “I’m very appreciative of the opportunity to serve on the Foundation Board. Trinity Mother Frances helps give people a chance at a healthy and fulfilling life and I’m proud to be part of that.”
