Make-up, the Universal Accessory Makeup can easily become the fundamental key to perfecting any look. It has the power to add that final touch, emphasizing that ever so appealing essence of the delicate feminine nature. It is undoubtedly the most timeless accent that can often be overlooked or avoided overall, since specific looks may only suit certain people. Fortunately, winter 2010 makeup trends are greatly diverse, offering a variety of styles to suit every person. From the classic red lips, au natural eyes, and bold smoky makeup, there is certainly something to accentuate everyone.

EYES This is where you can have the most fun. With trendy shades ranging from eccentric yellows to a sexy black, you can nearly do anything with your eyes. Designers Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier and Lacoste, kept the look classy, bringing in that heavy black eyeshadow over the eyes for that smoky eye look. On the contrary, Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior presented a more colorful approach with bright yellows and corals that play with the outfits that were worn. However, don’t be afraid to keep your eyes natural. It proved to be an effective aspect to Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld and Dolce&Gabbana shows without looking too bland. If you’re going for this look, be sure to tame those eyebrows and fill them in if need be to promote the shape.

SKIN This is wear it gets easy. Try to put only the minimal amount of makeup on your skin. This includes foundations and powders. With winter slowly making a fierce entrance, you want to maintain your skin with more healthy products instead of clogging it with oils and colors. As well, you want to avoid the blush! If you insist to continue using blush, lower your color of choice to something a bit more deeper – keeping subtle hints of the tone, while maintaining that accented or natural look for winter.

Lips It is extremely vital that you maintain the lips in consistency with your entire appearance. If you plan to pull off the raging red lips this winter, be sure to lower the intensity of the makeup on the eyes. Having the red lips can be an outstanding feature if worn with the right eye makeup – preferably nude to natural. Clashing is definitely something you would want to avoid this season. However, if you do go with a popping eye look, a wise decision would be to follow up with nude lips, as recognized by designers Chanel and Lanvin.

ARTIST INTERVIEWS

WENDY RORONG Interviewed by Becca Nurgitz Wendy Rorong is a 24 year old up and coming make-up artist. Originally from Indonesia, Wendy moved to Canada almost 10 years ago. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in science, but stumbled into the make-up industry and never looked back. When asked how she got started in the industry, Wendy told us that it was pure fluke. “I was looking for a song on Youtube and stumbled across a video on how to do a look from a Taylor Swift video or something [laughs]. Then I started watching and practicing on myself. Eventually, people started noticing giving me compliments. I also happen to have a friend who does a bit of photography, Sarah Angela. She contacted me to do some shoots together and I thought to myself, sure why not? Sounds like fun! And that’s where I started building my portfolio. It’s still an ongoing process.” Her creativity started at an early age, whether it was making clothes for her dolls, handbags, or necklaces;

“I feel very lucky to be a part of this world.” Wendy always found a way to be creative. Eventually this creativity flowed into the fashion industry. Wendy developed her own techniques when it came to makeup as well as using some tricks she picked up from other artists. She never had any formal training in the fashion industry. She works hard and strives to make every shoot better than her last, but she believes that a successful shoot is dependent on the entire team behind it. “Doing a fashion shoot is all about team work. You work together with the photographer, model and the stylist towards the same goal, and I think it’s an amazing and fun process at the same time. I feel very lucky to be a part of this world.” She has worked with such esteemed photographers such as Felix Wong, Maxime Bocken, Shalan & Paul, Dave Wise. Wendy most recently assisted on a shoot with Gabor Jurina, which was published on the November issue of Fashion magazine. She has a long list of people... (cont'd on pg. 9)

ARTIST INTERVIEWS

utiful is a e b l ir g a s e k a m ly “What tru onality shine rs e p r e h ts le e sh n e wh st totally is ju d n a in sk r e h h g throu as well as is e sh o h w h it w t n confide antages.” v d a d n a s w a fl r e h embracing (cont'd from pg. 6) ... that inspire her some of which include Kevyn Aucoin, Charlotte Tilbury, Charlotte Willer, and Lottie Stannard. Wendy Rorong is definitely on her way to becoming a successful artist in the industry, but she remains humble and hardworking. When discussing the challenges of breaking into the industry, Wendy talked about the hierarchical properties of the industry. “This industry is like a pyramid. It’s tough because when you start out, you’ll be at the very bottom of it, no one knows who you are, but as you get more experience, build your portfolio, network with the right people, you’ll continue moving up. You won’t be a star right away, but work hard and don’t give up, eventually you’ll get there.” Even though she works in an industry which is all about outside beauty, Wendy maintains that beauty is not necessarily on the outside. “To me, beauty has nothing to do with how much makeup a girl puts on her face, or what designer label she wears. What truly makes a girl beautiful is when she lets her personality shine through her skin and just totally is confident with who she is as well as embracing her flaws and advantages.” Wendy’s enthusiasm and work ethic make her a refreshing new face in the industry. She sets herself apart from other artists because of these qualities which in the long wrong will make her succeed in the fashion industry.
