Opera

IN THE SUMMER THEATER

The Varna Summer Theater was built 60 years ago, in 1957. The construction was under the supervision of Ivan Kovachev, assisted by Yordan Donev. It was designed by architect Zhecho Cholakov. Initially, the theater had 1,600 seats.

At the end of the 1960s the balcony was built, which enlarged its capacity to 2,400 seats. The embossments were made by the great Bulgarian sculptor Lyubomir Dalchev. For decades the stage of the Summer Theater has hosted the Varna Summer International Music Festival, the Varna International Ballet Competition, the International Folklore Festival, concerts by pop and rock singers… During the last eight years this unique place has been associated with the Opera in the Summer Theater as well. It is a place where lots of world famous performers meet. Once again in 2017 we will be loyal to our aspiration to present the latest tendencies in the world opera, ballet and musical. Since 2016 it has been the place where the troupe of the Varna Drama Theater Stoyan Bachvarov has also given performances. Ahead of us is an exciting summer, marked by the highest achievements of composers, directors, choreographers, artists and performers. Most sincerely I wish you lots of mutual positive emotions with the bright artistic talents at the Opera in the Summer Theater 2017!

Premiere

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is the contemporary genius of the musical. After its premiere in the West End in London in 1981 and its American production on Broadway in New York, the next year the musical was performed all over the world, gaining tremendous success. The cats’ world embedded in Cats directly relates to the diverse types in human society – stealing cats, criminal cats, prostituting cats… Prof. Svetozar Donev sought a modern, clear and stylized vision, closer to his contemporaries. Anna Doneva focused on the people with whom she was working. In her opinion, the cats’ world embedded in Cats is not foreign to ours.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS a musical by Maxim Dudaevsky, libretto and staging by Nikolay Aprilov, after the novel by Alexandre Dumas, peré

About the popularity of The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, peré, someone is believed to have said, “We all remember the novel without having read it at all.” This is one of the most adapted for the screen literary works of all times. We should not forget that the plot is of the kind which parents joyfully retell to their children as an example of a story, combining heroic honor, historical grandeur, a story about the power of friendship and last but not least – a love romance.” Nikolay Aprilov Conductor, Orchestration and Arrangement of the songs:

CARMEN

Wednesday

opera in four acts by Georges Bizet Libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée

21:00 – 00:00

22.06-29.08.2017

For the great French composer Georges Bizet the opera Carmen was simultaneously a flight of his genius and a life fiasco. The characters are bandits, smugglers, soldiers. The indignant members of the audience at the premiere outdid one another in showing their repulsion at the main heroine calling her “a depraved Gypsy”, “a shameless seductress”, “an adventuress without moral principles”, etc. Bizet could not bear the failure of the premiere at the Paris Opera-Comique in 1875 and died three months later. After seven years the opera returned to Paris with tremendous success and since then it has been triumphant all over the world. For the soloist of the Varna State Opera, Dimitrinka Raycheva (photo), the part of Carmen is one of her latest achievements in her rich repertoire. Turkish tenor, Murat Karahan, has a doctoral degree from the Bilkent University of Music and Performing Arts, Ankara; a specialization at the Santa Cecilia Academy – Rome with Prof. Bruno Cagli and participation in a master class of legendary Renata Scotto. In 2015 he successfully played Don Jose on the stage of the Bolshoi Theater.

The creation of the libretto was the work of four authors. The first was Edouard Mariette, a French historian and Egyptologist, who prepared the scenario basing it on a legend, decoded from a papyrus. The second, Camille du Locle, wrote the operatic text in prose. The third, Antonio Ghislanzoni – journalist, poet and singer – wrote the Italian libretto in verses. The fourth was Verdi himself. Since 1871, when it was performed in Egypt, it has been one of the most performed titles by the Italian maestro. The part of Aida is played by Serbian soprano Dragana Radakovic. She got a master’s degree from the Music academy in Belgrade: Vocal Arts in the class of Prof. Radmila Bakocevic and Conducting in the class of Prof. Stanko Sepic. She specialized in master classes given by Renata Scotto, Mirella Freni, Magda Olivero and Bruna Baglioni. During the last few years she has had successful participations at the Belgrade Opera, in Slovenia – Maribor and at the International Festival in Ljubliana, at the Summer Music Festival in Oderzo, Italy, at the Romanian opera theaters in Timisoara, ClujNapoca, Constanta and Sibiu, Munich, Dortmund, Wolfsburg, Saarbrucken and Frankfurt. In 2013 she took part with the Zurich Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Verdi’s birth. In 2014 she guest-performed at the Summer Festival in Schwerin (Germany) and opened the new season at the Cairo Opera, playing the part of Aida.
