Fresh designs give antique chairs a vibrant lease of life Jacky Byrne meets an Haslemere designer who is using reupholstery to put a modern twist on old furniture While comfort may be the first consideration when choosing seating for a home, the power of a beautiful chair to add drama to a room can be underestimated. But the appeal of a beautifully designed old chair, reupholstered in contemporary fabric, was clear to Melanie Scadding when she opened her Haslemere-based business, The Antique Chair Company, in 2010. “I’d always been interested in interiors,” says Melanie. “I also liked buying antique pieces and restoring them, and it occurred to me that there could be a niche market in updating period chairs by reupholstering them in unexpected materials. “There was a lot of painted furniture and ‘shabby chic’ around, but I wanted to do something different which didn’t compromise the integrity of the original wood. “Using fabrics that are of the moment can make a Georgian or Victorian chair feel modern without detracting from their architectural lines.” Melanie has a collection of one-of-a-kind chairs for sale, which she has individually sourced and renovated, working with a restorer and upholsterer. Alternatively, a client’s own chairs can be given the 21st Century treatment. “Typically a client emails me a photo of the room the chair is to go in and I suggest what might work in that setting and send samples,” says Melanie. “I particularly love fabrics by Designers’ Guild and House of Hackney as they have really eyecatching designs and colours.” According to Melanie, demand is accelerating as people realise period chairs represent good value. “There’s a preconception that the antique market is rarefied, but actually Victorian and Edwardian chairs are well priced compared to modern designs and they look good in both new houses and traditional ones once they are reupholstered.” Among Melanie’s favourite pieces in her current collection is a Victorian conversation sofa, with three seats arranged around a circular centre, upholstered in a vibrant green fabric. “Conversation sofas are also known as gossip chairs and sometimes seated a young courting couple and a chaperone on the other side. “They look good in a hallway or in the middle of a room. “I’ve also recently sold a George VI coronation chair. Everyone invited to the ceremony would have been given the chair they sat on and a set of them would be quite valuable.” Increasingly she is also waving her magic wand over furniture other than chairs, and is particularly fond of a Victorian room divider which she has covered in a Christian Lacroix fabric. “I’ve also just sold a Georgian dressing table with little compartments which turned out beautifully. There is something very satisfying about taking a sad and unloved piece of furniture and bringing it back into use, and by recycling it you are helping to conserve the environment too.”

A balloon-back chair only requires one metre of fabric. l Follow your instincts regarding colours. People say blue and green aren’t good together but I’ve used them and they look wonderful. Don’t be afraid to experiment – you can always recover a year or so down the line, particularly with a smaller chair. Consider what colours will go with the wood – green is often a good foil. I also like black, pink and turquoise. Purple looks great with a grey background. Colour doesn’t have to scream at you but it should be proud. l Keep most of the décor neutral, with a couple of statement pieces; you don’t need ‘statements’ all over the place. l A set of dining chairs upholstered in different colours can be placed in different rooms when you are not using them for dining. Melanie offers the following tips to help home owners revive their interiors through the use of vibrant fabrics: l Many people play safe but you don’t have to buy much fabric to make a statement with a chair. Love your interiors

Online guides mean perfect interiors are just a few clicks away YOU are truly pure of heart if you’ve never wanted to snoop around other people’s homes, lingered on the street to peep into a lighted room, or viewed a house with no intention of buying – just to satisfy your curiosity about what it’s like inside. Thankfully, the easiest, guiltfree way to deal with a decor addiction is to browse online with home design blogs, which can open the doors to homes throughout the world, as well as being inspiring, entertaining, and informative. “Online, there are no limitations, no boundaries, you don’t need a passport, a visa or a plane ticket, just sit back and log on – a whole world of inspiring interiors awaits your arrival,” says Ellie Tennant, who is travelled the world visiting 15 design bloggers and their homes for her book, Design Bloggers At Home. While it is fun to check out bloggers who have a similar taste to your own, it can be inspiring looking at the online scrapbooks of others who follow their own stylish path. Try these for starters. French Chic, the blog blog.bodieandfou.com KARINE Candice Kong, a French expat living in London, owns stylish online boutique Bodie And Fou. On her awardwinning blog she shares her life, pictures of her home – here and in France – and creative inspirations. Most usefully, she also opens up her little black book of places to shop and visit. “I started the blog originally to promote the shop, but it quickly became about much more than just my business,” said Kong. Her home is a spacious fourbedroom Victorian house which she shares with her husband and her daughter Mila. It is predominantly decorated in neutrals, with warm, natural materials such as leather, marble and wood, preventing the rooms from feeling too stark or cold. “I always find beauty in natural objects. I pick up bits of wood at the beach and bring them home to display them. I like shells too,” added Kong. “My look is pared back and edited so each room has a story behind it.” Cornish Charm, the blog futurusticblog.com DESIGN writer Rebecca Proctor marries her love of cutting-edge

design with her penchant for a more traditional, rustic approach to inspiring interior home-making. It is presented in a refreshingly clear style that makes it easy to browse and is interspersed with stunning art, photos and homes she loves – including her own in Cornwall – and her two small children.

“Living in a remote, rural area can mean sometimes I feel a little isolated, but the upside of blogging is that it’s made me feel much more connected to the rest of the country and the whole world,” said Proctor. her home is two 18th century cottages minutes from the coast which she and her partner, il-

lustrator Andrew, have lovingly renovated. Flagstone flooring, exposed brickwork and inglenook fireplaces have been retained, but wood burning stoves and a new kitchen have been incorporated. n Design Bloggers at Home, by Ellie Tennant, published by Ryland Peters & Small, £19.99

Creative tips to attract wildlife to your garden A GARDEN filled with birds, bees and butterflies is on the wish list of many homeowners, writes Jacky Byrne. Apart from being a good ecological investment, a sustainable, wildlife-attracting garden is generally easier to maintain than one with highly bred, disease-prone plants less suited to local conditions. But, as award-winning Surrey garden designer Selina Botham points out, wildlife gardens seem to have a bad reputation in terms of design. “They’re often thought of as consisting of a tangled mess of weeds or having a layout in the shape of butterfly wings but they don’t have to be like that,” she says. Selina, who created a large show garden for Jordans Cereals at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this year, believes wildlife gardens can be elegantly designed for people and for wildlife too. Her design for Jordans won the People’s Choice Award for the Best Show Garden as well as a silver gilt flora, and illustrated Selina’s conviction that a garden can reflect the essence of the British countryside and Selina Botham sits on a sculptured straw bench at the award-winning wildlife garden she designed for Jordans Cereals at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. l Preserve mature trees and such as pelargoniums. entice the creatures that make it l Create a pond or a water so rich without compromising shrubs and plant more, if there is room, to give a variety of feature that can be kept clean by on design. A beautiful kitchen designed by Rusper Interiors The couple behind Rusper Interiors first discovered Alno whilst shopping in John Lewis, and after extensive research, found that Rusper Interiors was their nearest dealer. They instantly liked the showroom and the previous kitchens we had designed. They commented that Rusper Interiors was the only team they had met who combined design with technical knowledge. They felt confident, therefore, that we could deliver their perfect kitchen. The couple had lived in the property for many years and, with the addition of two children to their family, they wanted to extend and modernise throughout; with the chaletstyle family kitchen being the main room in the house. Rusper Interiors was briefed to create an open plan, modern living space and to incorporate various textures to add interest. The mix of a Corian island with a Silestone L-shape kitchen worktop integrated two different textures seamlessly; allowing them both to blend with the handleless AlnoStar fine matt lacquer door. The couple wanted to keep the kitchen light and bright by using mostly white tones, whilst having a warm oak floor to balance the two. The mix of integrated units with open shelving on the island created an interesting difference, as did the 70mm Corian worktop combined with the 20mm Silestone worktop.

Love Your Flooring

Add a touch of class to your flooring The company that goes the extra mile to provide those finishing touches that make the difference With the harsh frosts of a British winter on the way, one of the key things that helps give our home interiors that warm feel-good factor of sanctuary is the touch of luxurious, deep softness underfoot. Who would disagree that stepping out onto a carpet of real quality makes those dark mornings that much more bearable? But there are carpets, and there are carpets and choosing the right one for the selected environment is key, which is why we have carefully selected a range from some of only the finest manufacturers to help ensure that all room types and uses are ‘covered’ if you’ll excuse the pun! For example, Victoria Carpets proudly displays the royal warrant, having provided floor coverings fit for a queen. In fact, the company supplied the red carpet that covered the aisle at Westminster Abbey for the royal wedding in 2011. Its products range from pure wool, through to a wool/manmade mixture and to a selection made of 100% polypropylene. There are twists, loops, velvet and Wilton varieties – but don’t let the addition of Her Majesty’s crest lead you to assume that they will all be a king’s ransom; prices start from around just £14 per square metre. One of the recent trends is for carpet of a stripy variety and, while many manufacturers have added such to their range, it’s Crucial Trading that springs to mind when I think stripes. But of course it also offers many slightly more subtle finishes. The company claims that its floor coverings are “extraordinary in their naturalness and their ability to make a simple, stylish statement in your home – no matter what sort of furnishings they are combined with.” However, if the room that you need to carpet is on the especially large side, we can show you some beautiful products from a company called Ryalux. This Lancashire-based manufacturer is one of the few that makes carpets up to seven metres wide, thus avoiding seams and reducing wastage. Sumptuously luxurious, they range from £45 to £140 per square metre. But for another step up still to what many consider to be the Rolls-Royce of floor coverings, the carpets from Jacaranda may be worth considering. These really can be considered ‘carpets for life’ , such are their hardwearing qualities – thanks largely to the fact that they weigh about twice as much as just about anything else on the market. To give you an example, we recently fitted one to a fairly modest room in one of our customer’s houses, and it took four men to lift it. There are handwoven, fine loomed and truly extravagant leather wall-to-wall versions and prices range from £60 to £170 per square metre. Natural floor coverings are quite popular too at present. The neutral tones, and weave of products such as coir and seagrass blend well with the current vogue for subtle, earthy coloured internal schemes but they can be very difficult to fit. Don’t be fooled by a company that promises to lay such a carpet in a day; harvested from nature, these materials need time to shrink and ‘relax’ before their final fix. Rushing the process can lead to an ill-fitting and unsatisfactory finish. And on the subject of fitting, we pride ourselves on being perfectionists and going the extra mile. That’s why we’ll do things like mitring and hand- stitching carpets to give a much better finish on areas such as stairs, and likewise create bespoke rods and runners where required too. It’s because we believe that if you’re investing in a quality floor covering, it’s the finishing touches and attention to detail that matter as much as the square footage of underfoot luxury.

Rest easy with Bramley Bed Centre A family-run firm that specialises in great customer service This family business has more than 75 years’ experience helping customers get that perfect night’s sleep. The High Street business specialises in individual pocketsprung divan styles, but stocks a vast selection of alternatives. It has built up a solid client base, offers a free delivery service and is able to dispose of your old bed for you. The Bed Centre also has a selection of children’s beds and bedroom furniture. Owner Gary Ewmett takes pride in only selling long lasting solid timber frames, such as oak, ash, mahogany and cherry wood. Sofa beds, mattresses and pillows are also available. Mr Ewmett said the thing that sets the Bramley Bed Centre apart from others is the personal service it provides to all its customers. “The one thing that’s very apparent is that the general public get very little advice about buying beds – a lot of them struggle,” he said. “We spend two to two-and-ahalf hours with some customers to make sure they take away the right bed” . Making that extra bit of effort has paid off. The majority of the company’s business is from personal recommendations. “People say ‘go to Bramley Bed Centre’ if you want some advice,” said Mr Ewmett. Even if they do not buy anything straight away, staff are confident they will return and pass the message on to their friends. While the majority of the younger customers prefer bedsteads, there are many still people looking for the classic divans. Whichever bed you opt for, Mr Ewmett said, the golden rule is the same. Take time over trying the mattresses before making your choice.

Eco-friendly options to reduce energy payments Replacing your ageing boiler might seem a big expense at first glance, but in the long run, it is one of the most purse-friendly, and eco things to do. Swapping an old G-rated – least energy efficient – boiler for an A-rated, high-efficiency, model could save around £490 a year on running costs, according to the Energy Saving Trust – www.energysavingtrust.org.uk – based on replacing a boiler and heating controls in a detached house with gas central heating. “A boiler of 15 years old or more may be wasting as much as 30p-40p of every pound spent on heating a home and water,” says Martyn Bridges, director of technical support at boiler manufacturer Worcester Bosch Group. “Updating your heating system to an A-rated condensing boiler could make your system up to 90% efficient, so it’s well worth considering.” Having the right controls for a central heating system is also important. “I would always recommend thermostatic radiator valves as they save energy by not allowing rooms to overheat,” said Bridges. Replacing single-glazed windows with double or tripleglazed ones, or fitting secondary glazing, should make a home warmer, quieter and less prone to condensation. Modern windows are not required, as period-style wooden sash windows can be double glazed. A loft – easy to insulate – and external walls are the other big areas of heat loss for houses. Homes built from the 1920s onwards usually have cavity walls which can be injected with insulation. Solid walls let through twice as much heat as cavity walls, but insulating them is not as straightforward. The cheapest and easiest option, especially if re-plastering anyway, is to use insulated plasterboard internally. While making a home more energy efficient in the basic ways listed is great, householders can go even further down the eco route. For example, a system can be installed to reuse ‘grey’ water – from showers and baths – or electricity can be generated at home with a wind turbine or solar panels. The cost of panels can be cushioned using ‘rent-a-roof’ schemes, which supply the panels free with the supplier banking payments from the government’s Feed-In Tariffs scheme, Solar panels being installed on a roof. which pays you for the electricity generated. Homeowners who buy the panels keep the Feed-In Tariff income. Another big eco investment is a heat pump. Ground-source heat pumps extract warmth from the earth, while air-source heat pumps take heat from the air outside. Both types of system use the heat extracted to heat a home and, in some cases, provide hot water. Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes, so they are not for everybody, but they should reduce domestic fuels bills – and who does not want to do that?

Aristocratic aesthetics in blue The blues are back big time! A perfect match to the warm, natural materials and the new, shiny metallic colours, blue is the hottest colour for the new season of home interiors. BoConcept offers a wide range of blue materials in their new 2015 upholstery range including an option to delicately mix leather and fabric in different tones of blue. The classic Carlton sofa can be covered in the new Firenze fabric that has a structured texture with lots going on. The trick is not to overdo it, but just to give it a bit of sparkle with exquisite details in copper and silver. The new Monza extendable dining table features a beautiful copper frame underneath the dark tabletops. The Lugano sideboard comes with a choice of copper legs for a dazzling look, and there are lots of lamps, rugs, cushions, vases and sculptures in copper, silver and brass to give contemporary living a shine.

You can choose between different base or leg designs to make your own look.
