The Classical Stage is supported by the British Heart Foundation and compered by Ashanti Omkar, and features performances celebrating Asian communities’ heritage.

PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA featuring AMAAN AND AYAAN ALI KHAN 6.30–7.30pm with the Philharmonia Orchestra 3.40–4.40pm Amaan & Ayaan Ali Khan

This year’s Classical stage is honoured to host the the Sarod-playing brothers Amaan and Ayaan Ali Khan, playing in both their own right, and in a special collaboration with the acclaimed Philharmonia Orchestra, under the baton of David Murphy who recently conducted the world premiere of Ravi Shankar's Symphony at the Royal Festival Hall. The brothers will perform an Indian classical performance and will then appear later in a special performance of their father Ustad Amjad Ali Khan's "Samaagam"* produced especially for the London Mela. Amaan and Ayaan are masters of the lute-like Sarod and are the 5th generation in a family of musicians who claim their ancestor, Mohammad Hashmi Khan Bangash, invented the instrument. Amaan and Ayaan have also presented the Indian talent show Sa Re Ga Ma and recorded fusion and world music albums. Like Vanessa Mae they have a celebrity profile to go with their virtuosity.

*Meaning confluence, or ‘coming together’, Samaagam is based on ragas for the different seasons of the year and explores the common roots of the music of India and the West.

KAVIRAJ SINGH 5pm Kaviraj Singh is a young and upcoming talent in Indian music, creating a niche for himself by revisiting the ancient sufi practice of singing while playing the Santoor.

NEPALI DANCE 2.30–3.15pm The London Mela presents Nepalese dance in partnership with the Embassy of Nepal. MELA’S GOT TALENT 1.30–2pm London Mela continues to spot new talent – an opportunity to see who's out there.

WALK THE PLANK present RAMA AND SITA At 8.30pm the Classical Stage will play host to a spectacular finale presented by Walk the Plank. RAMA AND SITA is a thrilling tale of love, jealousy, betrayal and daring told through shadow theatre – a modern take on shadow play using real life, local performers in place of puppetry. Inspired by the ancient Indian epic Ramayana, the story follows the destiny of soon-to-be King and Queen Rama and Sita, and the twist of fate that sees their future placed in peril… Featuring a fusion of dance and theatre and pyrotechnics and lighting, RAMA AND SITA will provide a spectacular conclusion to the London Mela’s 11th Edition. Special thanks to Manuela Benini for choregraphic input and Rajyashree Dutta from Manchester’s Indian Association for the initial commission.
