Add some spark to your barbecue IT IS incumbent upon us to be ready to take full advantage of the change in weather, especially after such a drought of sunshine, writes Peter Jenkinson. So across the nation it is likely that outdoor cooking equipment will be unearthed from the shed the very moment the rays appear. Here are some essential gadgets to get things sizzling: ■ Condiment Gun (pictured, inset) – £15.99 from www.firebox.com It is perfectly acceptable to have condiment bottles hanging about at your barbecue but this quirky sauce dispenser is sure to make you stand out from run-of-them i l l outdoor gatherings. All you need to do is fill the cartridges – it comes with two – with your favourite burger sauce, load into the barrel, and fire! ■ Charcoal king – Weber One Touch Premium 57cm – £159.99 from http://tools4thegarden.co.uk Despite the multitude of grillers in all shapes and sizes available in shops and online, most of them wish they could be a Weber. This is about the best charcoal barbecue on the market if you want to be taken seriously in the outdoor chef stakes. With a builtin thermometer, wheels, rust-proof vents, lid and bowl, plus a handy ash can on the underside, this is a musthave piece of kit for the summer. ■ Deep pan Weber Pizza Oven – £134.99 from www.hayesgardenworld. co.uk Designed to fit on top of the Weber 57cm griller, this accessory will make
great pizzas, naan breads, pittas and more without the need for fuel-hungry wood-fired stoves. The stone surface with steel ring and heat shield reaches cooking temperatures of up 450C to give you an even base and topping in less than four minutes. ■ Tools of the trade – 16-piece Soft Grip Barbecue Tool Set – £24 from www.diy.com. This dedicated set will perform all your gripping, turning and spiking tasks with ease. Suitable for gas and charcoal barbecues. ■ Heat sensor – iCelsius – £44.95 from www.roobix.co.uk There is nothing worse than underdone chicken wings, so make sure you get everything just right by arming yourself with a thermometer. This iOSpowered accessory syncs to your iPhone or iPad. Together with an app, it gives you a real-time on-screen reading and you can update your friends over social networks. Plus you can set an alarm for when your food reaches a desired temperature – perfect for producing a rare, medium or well-done prime steak. ■ For those who have won the lottery or are just rich, why not try the BBQ Donut Boat whic h costs a sizzling £20,000 from www.firebox.com. With space for up to 10 people to sit around the low-smoke grill, you can cook up a feast while lounging on a lake – and the BBQ Donut comes with loads of storage under the seats.
GET COOKING: The BBQ Donut Boat is a must-have for those with deep pockets, whereas the Weber One Charcoal King (top inset) is more affordable. Picture: PA.

Food for thought for your summer picnic NO-ONE does picnics like us Brits and most of us will have childhood memories of soggy sandwiches and crisps washed down with warm pop in a steamed up car after the heavens have opened, writes Adam Smith. There is something in our psyche that sends the nation dashing outside to eat al fresco as soon as there is the merest hint of an hour or two of sun. But because of our changeable weather, these events are often spontaneous affairs which can lead to crucial items being forgotten and a rather limited selection of food. But it does not have to be like this. With a little bit of thought and a checklist to help you on your way, the Great British Picnic can be an altogether more organised and palatable affair. There are a few basic items that you should keep at hand ready for your excursions. Having them ready and waiting will mean you can spend more time on the food. A hamper and rug are the obvious must have items. Make sure the rug is large enough to accommodate your group as the chances are high that the ground will be damp wherever you choose to sit. Add a tablecloth to your kit so that any spillages will be kept off your seating area. Next, ensure you have a supply of plastic cutlery, plates and cups. These will lighten the load of your hamper and plastic cups ensure that you will not be sitting on shards of broken glasses after the inevitable accidents happen. Take a basic medical kit with you that includes sting cream, antiseptic wipes, plasters and mosquito spray. Always pack high factor suncream as well because it is easy to burn if you are sat outside for long periods at a time. Hats and longsleeved shirts are also useful items to take along if you are going out on a particularly sunny day. If you are going to be around water, add towels and changes of clothes to your checklist, especially if you are picnicking with children as they will not be able to resist taking a dip. Also remember to take lots to drink as well. It’s easy to dehydrate on a warm

PICNIC PLANNING: Be prepared and your al fresco eating will sparkle. day and the chances are you will be somewhere that does not have a ready supply of refreshments. Pack more than you will think you need – you will be surprised at how quickly you can get through it. If the grown-ups are going to enjoy wine or beer, remember to pack a corkscrew and bottle opener. A cool bag is also essential for that crisp sauvignon and will also help keep your food cool and avoid anything spoiling. Once these basic items are at the ready, the next time you arrange a picnic you will be able to concentrate more on the exciting part – the food. There are thousands of recipes available on the the internet, but here are a few handpicked links to inspire you to get creative. ■ For a few slightly unusual recipes head over to http://www.countrylife-
greatbritishpicnic.co.uk/recipes/. Yes, the recipes all use the eponymous butter, but are fairly easy to make and many of the offerings will cater for vegetarians as well. Salads are also included but there are a few more traditional recipes as well, including scotch eggs from chef and TV presenter Clodagh McKenna and apple and sausage rolls. ■ BBC Good Food has a large list of recipes on offer, ranging from the traditional to the more adventurous. RAY OF HOPE: Taking a few simple precautions can help you avoid sunburn.
Stay safe in the sun STAYING safe in the sun does not have to spoil your family fun and there are a few simple precautions you can take to protect yourself and your children, writes Adam Smith. While some sun is good for us – it helps our bodies produce Vitamin D which is vital for strong bones and teeth – too much can cause painful burning and can potentially cause skin cancer. These days most of us are aware enough to reach for the sunscreen when we are heading out for some rays, but Cancer Research UK has issued some advice on using these products to their best effect. The charity warns that sunscreen will never completely protect your skin from sun damage, which is why it recommends using the products together with shade and clothing. When choosing the right sunscreen to use, Cancer Research urges people to always select a product with a Sun Protection Factor of at least 15 and to ditch bottles that have gone past their expiry date. Sunscreen should be applied to clean, dry skin and even products that claim to be waterproof should be reapplied after you have been for a dip in the pool or sea. No sunscreen, no matter how high the
factor, can provide 100 per cent protection. And no sunscreen will offer the protection it claims unless it is applied properly. It is crucial that you apply sunscreen generously and regularly. According to research carried out by Cancer Research, most people apply much less sunscreen than they need to. And, worryingly, many people burn more frequently when they use higher factors of sunscreen because they lure people into a false sense of security. A big no-no according to Cancer Research is to spend longer in the sun than you would otherwise because you are ‘protected’ by a product. This is a sure-fire way to succumb to sunburn. Pop star Nicola Roberts, of Girls Aloud fame, has joined Cancer Research in its sun safety campaign and has offered a few tips of her own to help people to stay safe. “It can be so easy for skin to burn, even here in the UK, so it’s important that we know how to protect ourselves,” she said. “Get to know your skin and how it normally reacts in the sun. That way, you’ll know what steps you need to take to protect your skin from sunburn. “When you’re thinking about your wardrobe, make smart fashion choices
by picking stylish clothes which also cover your skin, such as hats and long sleeved tops. “And remember that you can always dip under the shade for a bit to give your skin a break from too much UV.” Love them or loathe them, fake tanning products offer a way to get the exotic look you are after without risking your health by basking in searing rays for hours. There are a huge variety of products on the market – some are bronzers which can be washed off with water while others contain a substance called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which reacts with the skin and cannot be easily washed off. Cancer Research advises people that it is safer to use a fake tan product than tan in the sun or on a sunbed as it can help you to avoid exposing your skin to harmful doses of ultraviolet radiation, although research is still being carried out into the long-term effects of DHA. If you use common sense you can still enjoy the sun and the feeling of wellbeing it brings. Cancer Research UK has set up a dedicated website for those wanting to know more about sun safety. Have fun without breaking the bank IF your pockets are not as deep as you would like them to be, you may think there is nothing you can do in west London which will not end up costing the Earth, writes Chris Longhurst. When the schools break up that can only increase the demand for activities designed to entertain both young and old. Happily, the vast majority of the outside world is still free to explore at will and there are several locations in west London worthy of a visit where you will not have to be counting the cost. Summer Fun, Dukes Meadow Located close to a loop of the River Thames, Dukes Meadow in Chiswick has been popular with adults and children alike since the early 1920s. Every year the trust that looks after it organises a series of free familyfriendly events for the summer. Already so far there have been donkey rides and Punch and Judy shows and coming up in the next few weeks you can look forward to a circus workshop, animal farm and falconry displays provided by Eagle Heights.
Visit http://www.dukesmeadowstrust.org/summerfunevents2013. html for more details. Running for Fitness or Fun It’s a little known fact but Hounslow is actually the greenest borough in the whole of London – with more open spaces than all the rest. One of the best ways to enjoy this oasis of open beauty and get fit at the same time is to go for a run around one of the main parks. Crane Park in Hanworth or Bedfont Lake in Bedfont are two such places where a weekly timed 5K event take place. These runs are not races, more a chance for individuals to test their own ability while in the company of others. This allows you to focus on your training regime, or simply to enjoy the social aspect. Visit www.parkrun.org.uk/crane or www.parkrun.org.uk/bedfont for more details. Riverside Walks West London is truly blessed to have so much access to the River Thames.
The most famous of all London’s waterways can be used for everything from transport to messing about. While most of the on-water activities will carry an additional cost, there is no charge at all for simply getting together as a family and going for a walk. Some of the best of these free trails start in Hammersmith and Fulham, with every kind of final destination imaginable. Whether you start in Fulham Palace and make your way to Battersea via Bishops Park, or linger in the charming Furnival Gardens before heading past the famous Fullers Brewery at Chiswick towards Barnes, you are guaranteed a great time. Enjoy people watching, nature spotting and quality time together – and if there is a little money spare, you will find plenty of great pubs and restaurants only a stone’s throw from the waterside. Lyric Square activities Right in the heart of the busy shopping centre that is Hammersmith Broadway, lies a little square where many a busy businessperson or harried parent has taken time out for a well-earned breather. Lyric Square is named for the famous theatre whose entrance is next door and for years it has been one of the borough’s ‘go to’ hang out spots. Whatever day you visit in summer, you will find something going on;
Entertainers thrill the crowds in Lyric Square. whether it’s music or live theatre provided by accomplished performers or a set of deckchairs inviting you to sit awhile and watch some live sport on a big screen TV. Art Classes Perfect for budding Rembrandts and aspiring David Hockneys alike, these free classes introduce the
newcomer to all the techniques needed to be accomplished painters and drawers. They take place every Monday from 11am to 1.30pm at Bishop Creighton House, 378 Lillie Road and are for people of all abilities. Contact 0207 3859689 or visit http:// www.creightonhouse.org/ for more information.
