Welcome to West London
WELCOME to West London! If you’ve chosen to make this area home, you’ve made a great decision – there’s so much to do here, whatever your age or interests. Love a walk in the park? Live to shop? Or maybe you’re an arts or history buff? Whichever it is, you’ll be spoilt for choice in the boroughs of West London. This is a diverse area with a community to suit everybody, so read on to discover all there is to enjoy in this part of the capital.
Welcome to West London
4 Welcome to Hammersmith and Fulham/Kensington and Chelsea
J
UST a stone’s throw from Central London, Hammersmith and Fulham makes an ideal place to settle for those who love city life. This West London borough has a thriving arts scene and some of the capital’s best shopping. One of the area’s most recognisable landmarks is BBC Television Centre in White City, but another iconic building has opened more recently just down the road from there - Westfield London. This huge shopping centre gives Oxford Street a run for its money with high street and luxury stores, a cinema, bowling lanes and restaurants. BBC Television Centre
Local football teams are Chelsea, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers, while The Queen’s Club is near Charing Cross Hospital for tennis fans. The first half of the Boat Race also passes through the borough. Green spaces include Bishops Park which has recently resurrected the summer urban beach of Edwardian times, Hurlingham Park which has a long sporting history and is still the place to go for cricket, tennis, bowls and other activities, and Fulham
Palace’s botanic gardens surrounding the stately home. Many know Hammersmith and Fulham for its arts and entertainment venues and LAMDA is based here. You’ll find large venues that book big name acts such as the Hammersmith Apollo and Shepherds Bush Empire, but there are also many smaller theatres that are well worth a visit. There are a number of art galleries, including some specialising in Arabic and Indian work. The Musuem of Fulham Palace makes a good day out - it is the home of the Bishops of London and is made up of Tudor and Georgian architecture. You may be close to Central London in this borough, but with so much to do you’ll find little need to go into town.
T
HOSE who love the finer things in London will feel right at home in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Outside of the sights of Central London, this is the number one destination for anyone visiting the capital some of the best museums and galleries in the world are here. Lined with elegant and imposing buildings and dotted with beautiful parks, this is a borough many would aspire to live in. After the City of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea is the wealthiest borough in England. It contains some of the most exclusive addresses in London and some of the most expensive property in the world. Museums include the grand buildings of the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, as

well as the Saatchi Gallery. Don’t miss Kensington Palace and Gardens, which hosts a display of royal national costumes just off Kensington High Street. Shopping is big business in Kensington and Chelsea - Knightsbridge is the place to go for luxury shops and department stores such as Harrods and Harvey Nichols, while the famous Portobello Road market is a cut above the usual market stalls.
In August, what seems like most of London flocks to Ladbroke Grove for the Notting Hill Carnival, a riot of colour, sounds and smells that have to be experienced. The English National Ballet School, the Royal College of Arts, the Royal College of Music and Imperial College London are based here, attracting students from all over the world. The borough’s green spaces are equally magnificent and include Holland Park, which during the summer months hosts open air opera. Far left, Hammersmith Bridge, left, the The Chelsea Pensioner’s Founders Day Parade at Royal Hospital Chelsea, and above, the now familiar sight of Westfield shopping centre above the rooftops of central London

leisure centres and swimming pools, as well as Osterley Sports and Athletics Centre for those inspired by the London Olympics. Parks and nature reserves offer Hounslow residents lots of green spaces – some of the best, aside from the heath, include Hanworth Park which was a royal park and palace used by Henry VIII, and Bedfont Lakes which has won national awards for excellence. Fans of historic houses will find they barely ever need to stray out of the borough to be entertained. Notable places to visit are Boston Manor House,
Chiswick House and Gardens, Gunnersbury Park Estate and Hogarth’s House. The Gunnersbury Park Museum for Ealing and Hounslow displays the past and present history of these two neighbouring boroughs, while Redlees Artist Studios in Isleworth is home to local artists, exhibitions and workshops. With the borough spanning Chiswick, Hounslow, Isleworth, Brentford, Heston, Cranford, Bedfont, Feltham and Hanworth, you'll never be stuck for a delicious local restaurant, great pub or handy shopping centre.

ICKING Hounslow as your new home is a great choice – this area of West London is full of beautiful parks, historic houses and lots to do. Living in Hounslow means you'll be just a short tube ride from Central London, but will enjoy many of the benefits of the countryside and lots more space to explore. Hounslow has a long and fascinating history – it dates back to Norman and Roman times. Hounslow Heath’s northern boundary is a former Roman road and at the end of the English Civil War Oliver Cromwell camped his army there. James II also set up an army camp on the heath. More recent history saw the Hounslow Heath Aerodrome set up there when World War I broke out in 1914, and in 1919 it hosted the first daily international commercial flights. It has a lasting flight legacy as nearby Heathrow Airport was named after it. The borough includes a wide range of sports facilities,

Church Street, close to St Mary’s Church. Clarence Street is also lined by Georgian houses. There are beautiful walks along the Thames Path National Trail that link up Memorial Gardens, the Lammas Recreation Ground and Laleham Park. In fact, Staines recently changed its name to Stainesupon-Thames, reflecting its riverside setting. Staines Bridge is something of an icon locally, a three-arch structure that was built in 1832 and is a highlight of any ramble in the area. You’ll find all your favourite high street names in the town centre along with some great independent shops, a Vue cinema and a busy street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Easy access to Heathrow means many big international employers have also set up home in Staines, including Bupa, Logica, NDS, Siemens, British Gas and Samsung. This is definitely a place that will go from strength to strength in the coming years.

F you've chosen Staines as your new home then you’ll have plenty of places to explore as you get to know the area. The historic town centre and many green spaces mean you’ll be spoilt for choice for days out. Staines town centre’s pedestrianised shopping centre is great for all the amenities you could need, but look beyond the window displays and you’ll see there’s more than just retail therapy to keep you occupied. If you don’t know Staines or its history well, the fascinating Spelthorne Museum is a good place to start. With displays that span Staines and the Spelthorne borough in the Ice Age to the area’s Roman history and on to Victorian times, you’ll be a lot more familiar with your new neighbourhood by the time you leave. The museum also has town trails so you can get out and explore all of the most interesting sights on your own. Most of the oldest remaining parts of Staines are in Binbury

F you dream of a green and leafy borough, somewhere close enough to enjoy all the hustle and bustle of London but with enough open spaces to stop you feeling too hemmed in, then Ealing is the place for you. Formed in 1965 from Ealing, Southall and Acton, this desirable area of West London contains a massive 330 hectares of Metropolitan Green Belt land. Home to more than 300,000 people, the borough is made up of seven areas: Acton, Ealing, Greenford, Hanwell, Northolt, Perivale and Southall. These seven areas offer a huge range of difference, from canal walks and nature reserves The Orangery at Gunnersbury Park
to hubs for delicious South Asian food and busy shopping centres. Acton, Ealing and Greenford are known for their town centres, shops and restaurants, Southall offers a diverse community with a lively and vibrant centre, while those looking for a taste of the countryside should head to Northolt, Perivale and Hanwell. Parks and green spaces abound, with places to enjoy a walk in the fresh air including Lammas Park, Ealing Common, Hanwell Meadows, Walpole Park and the award-winning Northala Fields. Over the summer months, the borough makes the best of its open spaces with Ealing Summer Festivals, a programme of comedy, jazz, arts, carnivals, opera and blues, and culminating in the massive O2 London Mela. Gunnersbury Park Museum gives a flavour of the local area’s history, the London Motorcyle Museum is in Ealing, and PM Gallery and House is a cultural centre. Northala Fields If you haven’t already visited this exciting new park, you must give it a try. Northala Fields was developed in 2008 from old playing fields and the waste from the new Wembley Stadium and shopping centre Westfield. It features four mounds that block noise and views of traffic, and each has its own particular mix of earth and grass to support different wildlife. You can even see panoramic views of Central London from the top of one. Like fishing? There are six lakes for fishing, so you can really get away from it all for a day in the park. Northala Fields has won a number of awards for landscaping and innovation, and is a place for Ealing locals to be proud of. n Northala Fields, Kensington Road, Northolt, UB5 6UR. Walpole Park Another must-see in the green and pleasant borough of Ealing is Walpole Park, the biggest public open space in the area. The park backs onto Pitzhanger Manor and was once part of the manor house’s estate grounds. Pitzhanger Manor was the country residence of Bank of England architect Sir John Soane. Now, Walpole Park’s formal gardens are open to public use and are a lovely place for a walk or to relax on a sunny day. It’s also the venue for the popular Ealing Summer Festival, a day of performances, stalls and celebrations in the borough. n Walpole Park, Mattock Lane, Ealing, W5 5BQ. Chiswick House Gardens Head to Chiswick to see the inspiration behind New York’s Central Park and Blenheim Palace gardens. The Beautiful Chiswick House Gardens was the birthplace of the English Landscape Movement and in 2010 was restored to its full glory, making it one of West London’s biggest

Now it’s a public park and one of the best loved in the borough, with facilities for tennis, football, basketball and bowling, as well as children’s play areas. n Ravenscourt Park, Hammersmith, W6 0SL. Kensington Gardens Royal park Kensington Gardens was originally part of Hyde Park and sits just a stone’s throw from busy Kensington High Street. The park is a Site of Nature Conservation Importance for creatures such as grasshoppers, butterflies and ants, but it’s also well loved by locals for a place to take children to play, or to go for a run or even sunbathe. You’ll find an adventure playground alongside the One O’Clock Club and there’s a large open area of grass for games and relaxing. n Little Wormwood Scrubs, London, W10 6AD.

But if you miss out this time, don’t worry – the O2 London Mela is sure to be back year after year as it’s a huge hit every summer. Melas originate from the Indian sub continent. 16 Welcome to West London’s family fun WEST London is a tourist’s paradise and if you’re looking for a family day out that doesn’t involve a long journey, you’re lucky to have so many great options on your doorstep. Here are a few ideas to help the family get to know your new neighbourhood. Brent Lodge Park All kids love a cute and furry animal, but you needn’t head to London Zoo for a great value family day out. Ealing’s Brent Lodge Park has an animal centre to enthrall even the most demanding of visitors – it may be small, but it’s an awardwinning zoo. Here you can see exotic birds, animals including different types of monkeys, smaller creatures such as
rabbits and guinea pigs, and a colourful butterfly house opens from April to September. If you want to make one of the creatures you’ve met a member of the family, you can even adopt an animal –- speak to the keepers to find out more. Also at Brent Lodge Park are a maze, playground, tennis courts and games area. n Brent Lodge Park, Church Road, Hanwell, W7 3BP. Hounslow Urban Farm Get up close and personal with all manner of creatures at the Hounslow Urban Farm. Many of the animals and birds at this zoo have been rescued from the illegal pet trade, private collectors or zoos that couldn’t cater for their needs, making
Getting up close and personal at Hounslow Urban Farm
this a haven for them. The team supervise interacting with the animals so the whole family can learn more about those they meet at the urban farm. You can see monkeys, snakes, spiders, parrots and many other different species on this eye opening family day out. n Hounslow Urban Farm (also known as
The Tropical Zoo), Syon Park, Brentford, TW8 8JF. Bishops Park Urban Beach We might like London to be a bit more like a seaside destination during the summer, but if the sun does come out to play you don’t need to whisk the family off to the continent for a beach holiday.

This year Bishops Park launched London’s only urban beach, an idea that grew from the park’s Edwardian history. Families across the Capital used to come down to ‘Margate Sands’ in Bishops Park every summer, and now Hammersmith and Fulham Council have reopened the urban beach to give families a day at the seaside without leaving the borough. n Bishops Park, Bishop’s Avenue, SW6 6SX. South Kensington You can’t beat the attractions of South
Kensington for a funpacked day out. The Science Museum and Natural History Museum, with their interactive displays and kids’ zones, are great for keeping energetic youngsters entertained (see the Museums and Galleries section on pages 10 and 11). If they’re still full of beans, a run around the Diana Memorial Playground (see page 9) and its Peter Pan themed play areas should while away an afternoon. Nearby Hyde Park also has endless family activities such as boating, cycling and games in the park.

18 Welcome to West London – Notting Hill Carnival
A
UGUST Bank Holiday weekend means one thing in West London – carnival time! Crowds flock not just from all over London but from across the world to this colourful spectacle that’s become an icon of the area. The first ever Notting Hill Carnival took place in 1964 meaning it is coming up to its 50th anniversary soon, and each year the party atmosphere keeps on getting bigger and better. Europe’s largest street festival transports you to sunnier climes for two days whatever the weather – even if it’s held in the traditional British rain, you can’t help but get into the carnival spirit. Steel bands are Notting Hill Carnival’s biggest tradition because in the first year it was held to showcase the steel bands that played at Earls Court every weekend. The sound of steel drums is something most people will always associate with the event,
but it has now branched out to include calypso, soca, samba, local bands, international artists and huge static sound systems, too. Aside from great music, one of the biggest reasons many come to carnival is to see the flamboyant dancers and parade, with amazing costumes and dance routines. And of course there’s the food – come hungry, as Notting Hill Carnival is famous for its traditional Caribbean dishes such as jerk chicken and
curried goat. This is where Levi Roots’ Reggae Reggae Sauce started out before it took off as a brand. Many of the nearby tube stations close on carnival weekend (it is in the Ladbroke Grove area) so those lucky enough to live close by will be able to saunter down to the parade with little fuss. Notting Hill Carnival is simply unmissable for West Londoners – keep up to date with all the news and acts at www. thenottinghillcarnival.com.
