DRESS FOR SUCCESS A WOMAN’S CODE By Janette Rached, CMP
The old saying, “You can’t judge a book by its cover” may be true, but book covers and product packaging designers around the world have created an industry betting that people do judge and purchase products based on how they look! My friend Sue is an young entrepreneur. One of the secrets of her success is the way she dresses. Even when travelling for a vacation or leisure time, Sue is in a business suit and heels. Her motto: “Wear great clothes. You never know whom you’ll meet!” Everything you do makes some kind of statement, this is what she says!. The fact that Sue wears a business suit and not jeans and a tee shirt when she travels sends a specific particular message. Appropriate dress is also a way of expressing respect for the situation and the people in it. So, your look may change depending on the business circumstances. Clothing has an effect on both the wearer and the observer. It has been proven that people are more likely to give money (charitable donations, tips) or information to someone if that person is well dressed Career counselors still advise their clients to dress for the job they want – not the job they currently have. Meantime, Counselors know that people are evaluated by their appearance (this is a key body language element in first impressions), and they want their clients to gain a nonverbal advantage by already “looking the part.” "The most basic mistake new employees make is underdressing," says Randall Hansen, a professor of business at Stetson University in Deland, Fla. "If unsure, dress conservatively. The best way to avoid a problem is to understand the corporate culture." 6

MAKING THE RIGHT IMPRESSION AT WORK ISN'T HARD IF YOU KEEP IN MIND THREE BASIC POINTS WHEN BUYING CLOTHES FOR THE OFFICE: 1. Presentation counts.
For a professional women, the traditional look includes: • • •
• •
A skirt that hits just above the knee, slacks and perhaps pantsuits. Simple jewelry and accessories. Just a hint of makeup (no red lipstick for a meeting). Skip the perfume, especially during a job interview or the first few days at a new job, avoid perfume — Polished flats or moderate heels. Sweaters. Pantyhose may be the office standard. Ask.
Keep an eye out for regional/cultural and religions differences; what's standard in the Northeast may be seen as stuffy and impractical in the Southwest.
2. Casual shouldn't mean slovenly. 3. Dress as you want to be seen: Serious, professional, Classy and ready to meet clients. Take in consideration that before you head to the shopping mall in search of new clothes, size up your office. If you want to be a manager, check out what the successful managers wear. Next, check out the rising stars in the office. They sure don't show up for work in their weekend or evening outfits. Many offices don't have written standards, and it's up to you to get it right.
Appearance can create credibility; Think of the number of times experts from opposing sides of an issue have made good points during an exchange, but you remember what one said simply because that person was better dressed and came across better on screen. As usual, Mark Twain said it best: “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society”. And remember that: ”You cannot climb the ladder of success dressed in the costume of failure.” - Zig Ziglar

Integrating adventure & inspiration
Happy days are here
Meeting professionals today are seeking to deliver unique, creative experiences and more ROE (Return On Experience) as well as ROI with their planning and programing activities. Teambuilding and rich meeting destination immersion that extends far beyond the four walls of a hotel, resort or conference center are in demand–and in some cases high-adrenaline adventures. The result: unique, heightened inspirational and educational takeaways that challenge a group while bringing them closer together as a cohesive and productive team.

Get social Social Media and the meetings business are now indelibly partnered, primarily through LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram and smart phone apps. Facebook is still more of a personal communications platform, with planners and suppliers using LinkedIn to communicate meeting agendas and logistics, and utilizing specialized smart phone apps, Twitter and Instagram to communicate and solicit participants’ ideas and feedback during and after a meeting.
Connectivity, connectivity We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again. Powerful and reliable Wi-Fi is absolutely essential to win meetings business today. Optimized bandwidth is extremely important as most conferees today come with one or two iPads, business and personal smart phones, laptops, etc. Connectively during the meeting is as important as connectivity later on in the guestroom. A property that stumbles in this area risks losing the business next year, and unhappy commentary on social media.
Benchmark Resorts & Hotels has announced the “Top Meeting Trends for 2015″ as observed by its properties. Benchmark Hospitality International is a U.S.-based hospitality management company, which operates 40 hotels, resorts and conference centers coast to coast and off shore.
The smart set Smart phones drive everything about meetings today – whether an advance virtual tour of hotel & meeting facilities via FaceTime, communicating agenda and destination information through specialized apps, providing transportation logistics and updates and live streaming, or communicating during meetings with fellow attendees and session presenters. Gone forever are the days when planners asked conferees to leave their cell phone in the guestroom—today smart phones are a critically important business tool for planners, conferees and suppliers for use during a meeting. (Just keep them on mute or vibrate!).
The 2015 Complete Meeting Package is completely customized Today the complete meeting package (CMP)–sacrosanct over the last four decades in the conference center business– essentially no longer exists. Every package is completely customized to the planner’s exact needs and specifications. Generally the end product has many of the CMP components, but these are arranged in ways meaningful to the meeting experience and no longer standardized.
Winning the business with wellness Believe it or not, some of today’s chief meeting influencers are a property’s Chef and F&B Director, in addition to the overall service team. Meetings are a significant investment for companies. Proper attendee wellness and nutrition drive productivity and learning. Bringing chefs into the decisionmaking process with menu customization to maximize and sustain energy levels, accommodate dietary preferences, and consider allergy awareness has become a significant part of the meeting planning process, and is top-ofthe-list of with planning professionals today. Having the chef involved can be critical to winning the business. When it comes to in-house team building initiatives provided by a meeting venue, talented chefs hosting unique culinary programs are a major selling point to planners.
The 21st century meeting environment High-end boutique and personal luxury properties—once shied away from by planners—are now sought-after venues for important and especially high-level meetings, and these properties everywhere are taking notice. Many smaller highend boutique hotels and resorts offer a highly personalized and intimate meeting experience with a unique ability to blend a client’s corporate ethos and values with the hotel’s culture for a seamless meeting. For those meetings looking for more traditional conference venues, space clearly rules. Venues offering vast meeting space both inside and out-of-doors are in high demand for mid-level and traditional training meetings. Planners are looking for an ever growing number of breakout rooms and unique gathering places often located outside and off the beaten path.

Incorporate Surprise
into Your Plans By Barry Siskind
One of my greatest marketing secrets, I learned from my father.
W
hen I was 12 years old I worked for my father on Saturdays in his retail store. The challenge he faced was having a number of small and inexpensive items of various types left unsalable. There weren’t enough of any one product to have a dedicated sale and discarding all of these items would have affected his bottom line. What he did was randomly package five or six of these items into a small paper bag. Then he taped all the bags closed and placed them all in a bin. On the top of the bin he created a hand-made sign which read, “Surprise Bags - $ 1.00. He sold them all in one weekend. My father was able to successfully ignite an element of surprise and how boring and predictable our lives would be without it. It was a lesson that I have never forgotten. Human brains tend to focus on things that are new or changing. Think about the people you work with every day. My guess is that you hardly notice them until something has changed – a new pair or eyeglasses or a chin that has sprouted a beard. You may not recognize the change instantly but there is a feeling deep inside that says something is different about this person. I recall a vendor who once sent a personalized card to their entire customer base wishing each of us a “Happy Spring.” It was a well-received initiative and totally unexpected. However when they did it again the following year, it did not get the fanfare they received for their first attempt.

We seek surprise and novelty in our lives by choosing what we like to read, movies we like to watch or new restaurants where we will dine. Without surprise and change our lives would be painfully dull and one day would blend into the next leaving us with very little to remember. One anonymous writer is quoted as writing, “Surprise is like crack for your brain.” Surprise has the affect of stimulating the brain in a way that once experienced, craves for more. That’s not a bad thing considering that surprises in life are often few and far between. Those who incorporate the element of surprise have an advantage. Most exhibitions are not designed to capitalize on this drive for surprise; instead they are designed for consistency. Exhibitors are found in long rows where staff stands near the back regurgitating facts about their newest products and services to a visitor craving for something different in their exhibition experience. Its only when their show participation loses this predictability, that the imagination and attention of the visitor is sparked. With a bit of thought you can become the “Kinder Surprise” of exhibitors at the next exhibition you participate in. The beginning point is to ask “What do your customers expect when they do business with you or visit your booth at an exhibition?” Then turn their expectations upside down by asking, “What can I do to go beyond these expectations?” Surprise is often found in the small unexpected and inconsequential things we seldom think about until they happen. They are also most appreciated when your visitors think that the surprise you have planned was meant specifically for them and not everyone who passes by. For example: If you are arranging a specific meeting time with a prospect at your booth why not send them a detailed map guiding them from their hotel room to your booth with a stop along the way at a coffee shop where you have arranged to have their favourite latte waiting.

Trade Shows
Here are more ideas to spark your imagination:
Can You Afford One Night?
• Have a gift left at your visitor’s hotel room. • Promise to follow-up in five days and then do it in two. • Customize your demonstration by including the prospects logo or brand images. • Have your CEO call after the show thanking customers for their business. • Provide a personalized concierge to help your out-of-town customers find interesting places to eat or access to local entertainment. • If your prospect is celebrating a special event during show hours have a birthday, anniversary or congratulations card, treat or sign that says “Congratulations” ready when they visit your booth.
A resort in Vancouver Island ranks among the most expensive hotels in the world. More specifically, the survey established the 20 most expensive luxury hotels for the months of July and August 2014, the main summer holiday period.
• Develop a VIP Education package which includes reserved seating, meet and greet with speakers and a bound copy of the seminar handouts.
The Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, a luxury tent camp located in the Clayoquot Sound World Biosphere near Tofino on Vancouver Island's west coast, ranks as the world's eighth most expensive hotel according to the survey. The resort landed in the Top 10 thanks to an average nightly price of $3,681 for a couple during the summer months. In North America, no other hotel is more expensive.
• Rather than providing an advertised “show special,” give an unexpected discount to customers after they have placed their order. • Develop a planning guide, with very little reference to your products or services, with helpful hints on how your customer can make the most of their show time. • Create a comparison shopping guide which lists features and benefits of product provided by various vendors. Your customers may have accumulated a number of pieces of literature and samples. Arrange with a courier to deliver them, free of charge, to your customer’s office. Keep your promises. Many of your trade show visitors have received promises of follow-up or answers to questions by other vendors. Most of these promises are either not followed up or done long after the issue was resolved. These are some of my ideas that I hope they will stimulate your thoughts. Be aware of the importance of surprise in your life and see what kinds of things you respond best to from the people you do business with. When something happens that was totally expected add it to your growing list of ideas. The trick is to incorporate some of these ideas into your next exhibit program and then watch your customers’ eyes light up.

Topping the list of the world's most expensive hotels is North Island Lodge, a private island resort located in the Seychelles. There, a vacationing couple has to spend, on average, $6,559 to stay overnight. Another three private island resorts, four luxury safari lodges in Africa and a resort in Italy complete the Top 10. (Refer to the list below.) Two more resorts in North America rank inside the Top 20. The Ranch at Rock Creek, located in Montana's rugged landscape, ranks 19th most expensive with an average rate of $2,385 per night. Slightly cheaper and ranking 20th most expensive in the world is the Queen Charlotte Lodge. This luxury salmon fishing lodge is nestled in British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands. Following are the world's 10 most expensive hotels. The rates listed reflect the average nightly amount a couple has to spend to stay at each respective resort during the period spanning July 1 through August 31, 2014. • • • • • • • • • •

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE.
I
n the heart of what has become known as “The Golden Square Mile”, today’s Hotel Omni, Montreal remains a formidable presence in the hospitality industry.
With boutique hotels now dotting Old Montreal and trendy venues cropping up in Griffintown, Sherbrooke West retains its unique foothold: walking (or running) distance to Mont Royal, not to mention being next door to world class shopping, restaurants and the city’s major museums and galleries. A recent renovation refreshed the Omni’s decor, leaving “good bones”; executive suites and large rooms with king-sized beds are harder to come by in small, boutique-style operations. The Omni has also maintained some of the original marble and brass detail, while opening up and brightening the lobby and improving flow between the busy bar, the cozy café and the front desk. Interestingly - and no less important - they have also retained some of the original Four Seasons staff, such as the ubiquitous doorman. His friendly greeting and professional demeanor hearken back to Issy Sharp’s famous commitment to service. The founder of the Four Seasons Hotel said: “The reason for our success is no secret. It comes down to one single

principle that transcends time and geography, religion and culture. It’s the Golden Rule – the simple idea that if you treat people well, the way you would like to be treated, they will do the same.” This attitude still prevails at the Hotel Omni, along with a new and specific Omni brand of service. Upper management does not think it is beneath them to do any task that helps the hotel machinery run smoothly and this attitude trickles down through the entire team. Dean, head of security, also at that address since the doors opened, is quick to fetch a mop and clean up a spill. Director of Sales and Marketing, Monica Orr has also been spotted using a serviette to pick up a speck of dirt. Uniquely qualified to comment on the operations of the hotel, having been involved at this location multiple times over an impressive career, Ms. Orr likes to focus on what she lovingly calls the “story” told by the hotel. The Lower Lobby decor indeed tells a story and reflects much thought. There is a vignette of period furniture by the window, and an artistic list of historically significant events on the wall. There is a separate entrance which would prove very handy for a VIP reception. The rich beginnings of the Omni’s distinctive neighbourhood are reflected in décor representing eight “pillars”, such as art and business. For example,

there hangs a portrait of Hugh McLennan who first coined the term “two solitudes”. Looking for a theme for your next meeting? You can pick a theme from among these and customize activities accordingly for your group. Ongoing regular functions include weekly rooftop barbecues, a Scottish-themed evening complete with whiskey tasting and a selfexplanatory “Fashiomnistas” night. I experienced warm staff attention at check-in, check-out and in between. For example, arriving at the hotel, my heart sunk to find myself behind a large group of flight attendants, believing my check-in process would be slowed by the crowd. I was wrong. They were swiftly organized on one side and an employee behind the desk greeted me warmly, then went above and beyond the call of duty, handing me my keys and explaining some of the complimentary perks of my Omni Select Guest status: • • • •
In-room Wi-fi morning beverage of choice delivered to the room pressings shoe shine
On checkout, I benefited from similar attention. While loading my car for departure, I dropped a bottle of wine in the middle of an area bustling with guests and cars. From the valet who removed the broken glass, to the barista behind the bar who gave me something with which to clean my shoes, staff was efficient and pleasant. Planner publisher Michel Geoffroy adds this tip, specifically for planners: “What I like about the Omni is that if you have a group of a certain size – say, 200 people - you might organize breakfast in the Pierre de Coubertin room, move them into the Saisons A and B for breakout sessions, and then back for lunch. You can basically take over a complete floor for your people. It’s not like being in some big hotels where you’re more or less stuck in one room, tripping over people from another group who are occupying the room next door.” The Omni Hotel building may have been designed during the heady times of The Montreal Olympics, but it works just as well for event planners today. The Omni brand combines old-fashioned commitment to client care with a firm foothold on the future. With the acquisition of the King Edward Hotel in Toronto and possible expansion into Western Canada, Omni is a name to keep on your radar.
A 70-year-old British tourist is in jail in Morocco for being gay, news reports said Sunday. Ray Cole was arrested with a local man at a bus stop in Marrakesh last month, and was sentenced to four months on Thursday, according to the KentOnline website. Speaking in Deal in southern England, Adrian Cole said his father was sleeping on the concrete floor of a cell he shared with up to 60 other prisoners. “The prison doesn’t segregate so he’s sharing with murderers, rapists, paedophiles,” Cole said. “The trial was a complete farce,” he said. “They’ve gone through his phone and found photographs that they’re using as evidence for a homosexual act.” Charlie Elphicke, the local member of parliament for Deal, said the imprisonment showed tourists were not safe in Morocco. “I’ve been doing all I can to help free Mr Cole from these appalling charges,” he said. “I’m deeply concerned about his safety and it’s clear that if you visit Morocco you’re at serious risk of facing trumped up charges for medieval crimes.” A spokesman for Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office told Kent Online: “We can confirm the detention of a British national in Morocco. We are providing consular assistance.” In its advice to travellers, the Foreign Office warns that homosexuality is a criminal offence in Morocco.

As you know, this column is designed to introduce you to activities that are non conventional. Even though the summer season is still a month away, we chose to talk to you about Full Moon Rafting, something that will dive you right into summer group activities.
Smaller is more fun Horizon X was founded in 2000 as a kayak school. In 2004 rafting and other activities were added. Mr. Bertrand is proud to be the smallest agency on the Ottawa River. According to him, the experience is richer because the fewer people on the river, the less waiting, the greater fun! In numbers, these rafts have a capacity of 6 to 7 places and a maximum of up to 42 people.

Fight water with water Proud to be the only one in Canada to offer full moon rafting, Martin Bertrand - founder and owner of Horizon X, introduced us to the white waters of the Ottawa River. With his taunting personality, Mr. Bertrand knows how to handle both his guests and the rapids. His passion is moving! Water was his worst enemy. He nearly drowned at a very young age. He not only overcame his biggest fear, but became one of the only guides in Canada with IRF (International Rafting Federation) class 4-5 certification. With 17 years of white water and teaching experience, he holds all the skills and enthusiasm to make you feel comfortable and to spend an unforgettable time. I almost forgot a surprising detail: his little girl, who is now 7 years old, began her career at 13 months... Isn’t remarkable!
What to expect Here’s what your adventure looks like: The activity starts around 10 pm and they ask you to be on site no later than 8 pm. Personally, I suggest you arrive early to take advantage of the peace that reigns in this little paradise. River views, volleyball, BBQ, rustic cabins and campsites are awaiting you. Once you have registered and slipped into your wetsuit, the yellow bus (yes, the one from your childhood which strangely smells the same!) takes you on a 30 minutes ride to the boat. Fitted out with a paddle and a

helmet, you plunge right in! The adventure begins peacefully under a full radiant moon, where nocturnal landscapes loom its splendour. It’s the calm before the storm! But don’t worry, because the Federation only allows level 2 descents at night. It’s an excellent introduction for those who are afraid of being thrown out of the raft. Something I didn’t know, it is possible to turn around and go backwards in a rapid. The raft starts to swirl back and forth and gives you exactly the bit of adrenaline you are looking for! The activity ends around 1 o’clock in the morning. From there, you move on to the fire pit to roast some marshmallows, before heading back to your cottage or tent.
When, where, how much? Horizon X opens its doors for the summer season as soon as Mother Nature permits. There’s no official date, just call ahead. A full day of rafting varies between $115 and $ 35 depending on the size of your group and Full Moon Rafting is at $130. Getting there is simple. Horizon X is located less than an hour from Ottawa and a shuttle is offered by request. For more details, visit www.horizonx.ca. Don’t hesitate to share your ideas for our next adventure piece. Write to us and share your own experience. The Planner’s team will be happy to hear from you! Crédit : Cindy Lottes

App Would Let Users Gauge Stress Levels
The next addition to the collection of health apps coming online for smartphones may be a stress test, researches said at a recent conference. With a simple tube, some software and a saliva sample, people can measure levels of the stress hormone cortisol, according to new research presented last week at the joint meeting of the International Society of Endocrinology and the Endocrine Society in Chicago. “We have designed a method by which anyone with a smartphone will be able to measure their salivary cortisol level quickly, easily and inexpensively,” said lead investigator Dr. Joel Ehrenkranz, director of diabetes and endocrinology at Intermountain Healthcare in Murray, Utah. While a commercial lab may charge up to $50 to run a quantitative salivary cortisol test and take a week to provide results, the smartphone test will cost under $5 and give results in about 10 minutes, Ehrenkranz said. The public will be able to monitor their own cortisol levels whenever they want. So they designed the devise to be inexpensive to manufacture, and easy to use. To take the test, a person puts a straw-like saliva collector under the tongue, and capillary action wicks the saliva to an assay strip in a cassette that’s inserted into a reader. The reader aligns a lens and light diffuser with a smartphone’s camera and flash. A few minutes later, an image analysis app quantifies the cortisol value.
St. John’s video recognized in the Best Destination Video category by CONVENE The Professional Convention Management Association has recognized Destination St. John’s marketing efforts. Their publication CONVENE has an Annual Best in Show edition and has recognized the DSJ video in the Best Destination Video category. Destination St. John’s created a video that brought the destination to life and that tells its colourful story. St John’s has an eclectic, sophisticated urban centre that is on the edge of the continent, with thousands of miles of unspoiled coastline. Unique features like iceberg viewing from a picnic blanket are illustrated in spectacular images that highlight the destination’s exotic nature. The Irish and English cultures remains prevalent, with numerous unique dialects, warm and friendly island people where strangers inexplicably become friends are intangible, but part of what makes the destination an uncommon experience. Though difficult to capture on screen in 60 seconds (they’re better experienced live to be truly appreciated), the video does manage to reveal the intangible. More Room For More Bags On 737S Boeing announced the launch of its new Space Bins recently, which provide more room for carryon bags. Space Bins are now available on new Next-Generation 737s and 737 MAX airplanes. Each of the larger Space Bins will stow six bags, two more than the current pivot bins installed on Next-Generation 737s with the Boeing Sky Interior. That’s based on a standard size carry-on bag measuring 9-in x 14-in x 22-in (23 cm x 36 cm x 56 cm). With a lower bin lip height, Space Bins provide increased visibility into the back of the bins to make bag loading easier. They’re also as easy to close as the current pivot bins, but require no bin assist mechanism. Launch customer Alaska Airlines will begin installing Space Bins on all new deliveries as soon as the larger bins become available in late 2015. Boeing’s Space Bins will also be available for retrofit on in-service Next-Generation 737s.

Myth-Busting:
the best time to book airfare
After analyzing 415 million airline fares, CheapAir.com has found that no single day of the week is statistically better for booking cheap airline tickets. Contrary to popular myths that Tuesdays or Sundays are the best days to buy, CheapAir found that no specific day of the week or time of day will consistently save travellers money.
C
heapAir decided to investigate this issue after The Wall Street Journal reported that Sunday is the best day to buy airline tickets, according to ticket sales data collected by the Airlines Reporting Corporation. The conclusion was based on tickets purchased, but corporate travellers tend to book last minute, pay higher fares and purchase tickets on work days. This likely skewed the data and made Sundays appear to be the cheapest day to buy flights. Rather than examining tickets purchased, CheapAir examined all fares that were available on domestic flights since the beginning of 2014 - a total of 415 million airfares. The differences between days of the week were statistically insignificant. The cheapest days to buy - Wednesday and Thursday - were cheaper than the most expensive days Saturday and Sunday - by a grand total of $3. “The day you choose to fly and how far in advance you purchase can make a huge difference in your airline ticket price, but the day of the week you purchase that ticket really doesn’t matter,” said Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir. “If you see a great fare on Monday, don’t wait for Tuesday or Sunday. Rates can change rapidly, so take advantage of cheap airline tickets when you spot them.” In April, CheapAir found that the cheapest airline tickets were available an average of 54 days before the flight, and the prime booking window was between 29 and 104 days. However, the destination, travel date and other variables could drastically affect the prime booking window. “The best thing to do is check for fares early and often,” added Klee. “Become familiar with the market on your travel dates so you learn to spot good and bad deals.”

Speed Reading
Tricks
Slow readers not only waste time but their comprehension suffers, here are five tips for picking up speed.
Never read without a pen. By moving the tip of a pen beneath a line, your eyes will instinctively follow, speeding you up. On a computer, run the onscreen cursor under the text.
Pick up the book.
Remember Every Name Every Time
Always introduce yourself first. You can be so intent on selling yourself or your ideas that you fail to really make an impression by remembering someone’s name. Instead get your own intro out of the way, fast. Then you can focus on the other person.
Reading at 45-degree angle is easier on the eyes than off a flat surface.
Confirm and repeat.
Relax your eyes.
In the first 20 seconds, make him feel there’s no one else in the world.
Focus on full lines, not specific words, using peripheral vision. Move your head, and pay attention to the upper half of letters.
Connect the name to your brain.
Kill that voice in your head.
When you meet a guy named Bill, start thinking of other Bills you know. Like Bill Clinton. Or, “Oh, my uncle Bill”. Or, a duckbill or a dollar bill. We need reminders.
Silently repeating words slows you down. To break the habit, try quietly humming.
Use the name three times.
Keep on truckin’.
No third-rate salesman rap: “Well, John, great to see you, John.” Spread it out – once to confirm you have the name right, then in mid-conversation, and again when you say goodbye.
Resist the urge to “regress” and reread.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts is launching its first new brand in nine years. The company will spend $20 million to launch the Tribute portfolio, which will comprised independent hotels that affiliate with Starwood. The hotels will keep their names and get access to the marketing and distribution network of the hotel giant, which has more than 1,200 hotels in about 100 countries. Guests at the Tribute hotels will also earn Starwood loyalty points.
And speaking of Starwood, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts has revealed the results of a newly commissioned survey on global wine and travel trends as part of the brand’s signature premium wine program, Sheraton Selects Wine program. The survey found that after a long day, one out of every two people would reach for a glass of wine (48%), rather than their smartphone/tablet (15%) or even their spouse (15%). The research was conducted by market research firm, StudyLogic. The survey took a closer look at the wine habits, taste preferences, spending habits and social influences of today’s global traveler. The results provided insights into the close relationship between wine and travel and also uncovered some surprising statistics showing where wine stacks up among some of life’s other indulgences. ‘Unwined’ • Respondents would be more likely to give up their smartphone for a day (29%), sex for a week (23%), or their social media accounts for a week (23%), in return for a premium highly rated glass of wine • Wine is the most desirable way to unwind while traveling (57%), beating out the spa (23%) and the gym (12%) • Three-fifths (60%) of respondents note that they drink the most wine while traveling
•
While on the road, nearly three-quarters of respondents (74%) are more adventurous in trying new wines • Travelers are more likely to invest in premium wine, with two-thirds (67%) willing to spend the most on wine while away from home “As a global leader in hospitality, we constantly strive to better understand what our guests want from their hotels, and then aim to exceed their expectations,” said Hoyt Harper, Global Brand Leader for Sheraton Hotels & Resorts

Skype Like a Pro
Avoid five pitfalls that jeopardize your image By Stacey Hanke
M
any of us take for granted our image and reputation that are being built or jeopardized through technology. Participating in a Skype call is just as important as presenting live to a group. Your listeners are still creating perceptions of you. Your ability to influence is determined by the experience you create for your listener. Is your non-verbal behaviour consistent with your message during a Skype call? If so, your listeners will have greater trust in you and your message. Without trust, influence cannot occur.
By avoiding the following five pitfalls, you increase the relationship you build with your listener and the influence you have on them.
1. Know Your Technology. Avoid the mistakes I’ve made in the past by doing a test run prior to the live Skype call. Even though my Skype technology worked seamlessly the day prior, the sound and image failed the next day when I was attempting to call a client. Be prepared by knowing the “how to’s” for testing sound and the clarity of your image as seen by your listener - prior to the call. 2. Stay Connected. Talking while you’re looking down, to the side or over the camera is distracting for your listener. When they become distracted, you’re inviting them to do anything but listen to you. Stay focused on your listener and the conversation by looking at them as if they were actually sitting in front of you. Make sure you are always centered in the frame. Avoid sitting too close to your camera or too far away. This negatively impacts what your listeners see and hear. 3. What’s Behind You? Always know what your listeners are seeing behind you. Is the picture, work of art or shelf of books positioned behind you a strong representation of your image? 4. Minimize Distractions. Respect your listeners’ time by giving them your full, undivided attention. Sending text or email messages, answering a phone call, or having a side conversation with co-workers who are passing by communicates to your listener that their time is not valuable. Schedule your Skype calls during times when you can commit to being present.

5. Have a Back Up Plan. Technology is not perfect so be prepared for worst case scenarios. What is your back up plan if your Skype call simply isn’t working? Are you able to handle this situation with grace and confidence? Walking into the unknown is easier to do when you are prepared for the worst. Skype is a powerful tool that gives us another opportunity for virtually connecting and building relationships with individuals. Treat this opportunity with the same level of respect, preparation and focus as you would a live, face-to-face conversation. Skype gives you another avenue to build your reputation.

team building
HOW M SWEET IT IS
any companies have been putting a strong focus on the “well-being” of their employees, understanding that creating a fun environment in the workplace can lead to employees who are happier and more satisfied in their roles. It can also lead to better workplace morale and decrease in staff turnover and absenteeism. However, can happier employees lead to a better bottom line? Recent research presented by the University of Warwick in Britain in April 2014 confirms that employees who are happier are indeed 12% more productive. One question still remains: what makes people happy? This 2014 study offered test subjects snacks and the opportunity to watch comedy clips prior to working. It showed that eventually the effects of these methods wore off. Another factor for happiness that is quick to come to mind is money; yet there are plenty of people who are very well paid but still unhappy at work. Happiness in the workforce must be developed at a deeper emotional level, created by a playful work environment and by experiences that bring people together to feel like a team. James Beard, chef and cookbook author, once wrote: “Food is our common ground, a universal experience”. Food sustains life, yet it is so much more than something we need to nourish our bodies. Food brings people together; through shared experiences, barriers are broken, memories created and relationships built. For the past 4,000 years, chocolate has been connecting people around the world. People across all cultures have turned to this mysterious food for ritual, medicine and sheer pleasure.

e n i h s n o i t n e v n o c r u o y See 's g e ip n n i W t s g n o m a newest star s. What better food to bring people together than chocolate? A superfood, chocolate is rich in antioxidants, flavanols, and minerals such as magnesium. Did you know that chocolate actually makes people happy? A study in the Journal Of Psychopharmacology found people who had a 42g dark chocolate drink a day felt more content than people who did not. Junee Sangani, a dietitian and spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, explains why: “The improvement in mood that people can get from eating chocolate comes from the release of serotonin and endorphins – the feel-good chemicals – in the brain.” For those working in the corporate setting, we all know we could use a little of that! Imagine the following scenario: It’s lunch hour. You and your team have already been hard at work since 7AM and are starting to feel your energy fade. In walks a woman, an award winning chocolatier, carrying with her a strange machine filled with 5 kilograms of liquid chocolate! She quickly takes over your boardroom with her portable kitchen. The smell of the chocolate is intoxicating and soon your team gathers for a much-needed break. Your boardroom has now been transformed into a small chocolate factory. Plates filled with beautiful artisan chocolate bonbons await you to determine your favorite flavor. Raw cocoa beans and cocoa pods decorate the tables along with chocolates from around the world. A truffle making station at the back of the room is ready for you to make your own box of chocolates. Your journey through this mysterious food begins with a short demonstration. Laughter and excitement shine though the chatter as your team begins to make their own chocolates. Working together in teams of two, your team starts to communicate. Your team is happy to be away from their desks for this short 90 minute workshop, but more importantly, they are connecting with each other while indulging in this exciting culinary experience. Success at work doesn’t depend on the amount of time your team works; it depends upon the quality of your team’s work. And the quality of your team’s work is highly dependent on your team’s well-being. Taking time replenish with a playful chocolate experience will help your team members re-connect on a personal level, trigger creativity while reducing stress and lead to overall happier employees.

The
AtlantiC Canada VENUE GUIDE Rich with history, rife with culture, and sprawling with natural beauty, St. John’s is a city of exaggerated proportions. All these wonders have been here for thousands of years, embraced by those who happened upon them. And while finding the true spirit of the city, you’ll stumble upon wildlife, colourful characters, dramatic vistas, and an abundance of culture. In fact, being the most easterly point in North America merits our very own time zone, half-an-hour off-kilter with the rest of the world. Around every corner, around every bend, is the unexpected, and this unexpected is good. The St. John’s Convention Centre (SJCC) expansion is well under way and on target. It is doubling its capacity and improving its divisibility and layout. Construction will be completed December 2015.
The scenery of the coastal communities seem untouched in many ways, the music and the stories are all things that set the destination apart but none more that the colourful characters of this place. The people of the place are the friendliest folk you will meet no matter the cove, gut or neck you wander in. St. John’s International Airport has terrific access and is closer that you think. Just 2.5 hours non-stop from Montreal or 3 hours from Newark it is an easy destination to travel to.
Unique to St. John’s: •
It is the only place you can view an iceberg, humpback whale and Atlantic Puffins on the same day in the same boat trip.
•
Taste Iceberg Beer and watch the brew master at the Quidi Vidi Brewery. 10,000 year old icebergs are harvested and the water is used in the making of this award winning beer.
•
Go snorkeling or diving with the humpback whales.
•
Have breakfast and do yoga in the bunkers at Cape Spear and experience the first sunrise in North America. Not a bad way to start your day.
Here are some interesting cultural nuances:
Destination
St. John’s St. John’s Newfoundland has become one of the most desirable destinations in Canada to host meetings, conferences and events. It is interesting to note that delegates of conferences held in St. John’s tend to travel with more people and stay longer than when they travel to other destinations. 50-60% of delegates surveyed extended their stay in our province.

St. John’s is the Far East of the Western World. Because of the location it has attracted international visitors for hundreds of years influencing the fabric of the culture. The only place in Canada with its own dictionary. There are 1000s of words and expressions that are unique to Newfoundland. The cadence has a lilt. Just an hour south of St. John’s you will hear a real Irish lilt to the vernacular. An hour from it the place names and dialect are French. Most coastal communities were only accessible by boat and only in the spring/summer hence the reason for their own dialect. But it also meant it close knit communities and little in the way of entertainment, except storytelling and music. They were an integral part of the community and have stood the test of time. They are an important part of the visitor’s experience.
Take over the town: A convention of 400-600 people feel like they own the city. It will be the only large group in the city and they have everyone’s undivided attention.
