DISPLAY IDEAS WITH YOUR

EXPO EYES

You are looking for a new trade show display. You’ve been to a number of booth builders’ showrooms, seen lots of interesting ideas and now face the challenge of choosing what’s right for your organization. This is a common dilemma, and while a professional display representative can be helpful, it’s important for you to have some idea of what will work for your organization in the shows you will be exhibiting at. You now have a choice; you can be reactive and wait for your display reps to offer suggestions, or you can be proactive and develop ideas of your own that your rep can incorporate into their design proposals. The first step is for you to acknowledge that all trade show booths are designed for the same purpose; to attract the right attention among the throngs of trade show visitors. That’s not an easy job. At some point, attendees are often overcome with the effects of information overload. From their point of view, there is simply too much for them to see and too much information to absorb. Once mental fatigue sets in, it’s up to your display to catch their attention and motivate them to want to visit.

If all exhibitors’ booths are designed to attract attention, you need to understand the techniques that can be used to increase the attention-getting ability of your hardware. The best place to learn how a booth works is at a trade show. Many exhibitors have learned that prior to working with their display builder, they should visit shows to see firsthand what works and what doesn’t. Walking a show with a well-honed eye for detail is called “using your expo eyes”. The trick to finding new ideas with your well-honed “expo eyes” is to ensure that you don’t short-circuit your attempts. This happens when you look at some booths and discount the relevancy of what you are seeing by saying:

• This exhibitor is too small • This exhibitor is too big • This exhibitor is from a different industry • This exhibitor (The number of excuses is endless.) When you look for reasons to ignore what you are seeing, you are in fact putting blinders on your possibilities. Remember that all exhibitors regardless of size and industry, are attempting to do the same thing – attract attention. Notice what they are doing and see if you can identify the techniques they are using. Then ask yourself if there is something that you can incorporate into your plans. Some techniques to observe are: the use of signs, graphics, motion, games, contests, interactive elements, technology, colour, materials, product placement, group demonstrations, in-booth educational seminars, video and out-of-the box thinking.

Most techniques will be self-evident; out-of-the-box thinking needs a bit of explanation. In most situations, your space is governed by specific rules that you need to adhere to when creating your display. Think of your space as a cube – 10 feet X 10 feet X 8 feet high. Many shows prohibit you from extending your display outside the cube; however; within the cube you can be creative. One way is to move away from displays that are designed with right angles. This produces a boxy effect and is used by the vast majority of exhibitors. By using interesting angles within the box, you can create a display that stands out in the crowd. Once you have visited a number of shows and have found some really interesting ideas, talk to your booth builder about what you have learned, along with details that include your exhibiting objective and information about your products, services and corporation. Then, before you roll out a new idea throughout your entire exhibit program, you might consider trying this idea in a limited way until you can prove to yourself that it is giving you the desired results.

OVERTAKES PARIS AS WORLD’S MOST VISITED CITY Having welcomed a record-breaking number of visitors last summer, London can now claim it is more popular than Paris. London & Partners, the official promotional organization for London, claimed that investment in the London 2012 Olympic Games would lead to a surge of international interest in the capital. A year after the games, it seems to have been proven right. Figures released yesterday by the Office for National Statistics show that the city welcomed 4.9 million visitors between July and September 2013, an increase of almost 19.5 percent over the same period in 2012. The figures are a new record for London, not only surpassing the previous peak of 4.7 million visitors seen during that same period in 2006, but also beating the visitor numbers in all other popular city destinations around the world. Britons can now incontestably claim that their capital is more popular than Paris. When year-end figures are released, it is expected that the capital will have welcomed over 16 million overseas visitors in 2013, representing another recordbreaking performance. Speaking about London’s record-breaking tourism figures at the launch of the campaign, the mayor said: «With so many fascinating museums, the best theatre scene in the world, more green space than any other European city, numerous top sporting venues, a low crime rate and much else besides, it is no wonder that people from all over the globe are flocking to London in record numbers. These incredible figures prove that London is without doubt the greatest city on the planet.»

Every Minute Counts: Alaska most on-time major North American airline 4 years in a row FlightStats Inc has named Alaska Airlines the No. 1 on-time major carrier in North America for the fourth year in a row. No other North American airline has received the prestigious award more times since the Portland, OR-based company launched its on-time awards program in 2009. Alaska’s on-time average for the 172,582 flights it operated in 2013 was 87.08 percent. Average on-time performance among North American carriers was 79.16 percent. FlightStats has published the On-time Performance Services Awards for the past five years, recognizing airlines that deliver on their promise of on-time performance. The North American Major Airlines category comprises the 10 “best of the best” major carriers in North America, which operated 4.9 million flights in 2013.

HOTELMARKETING.COM TripAdvisor’s TripBarometer survey found that mobile devices are an essential part of the travel experience for U.S. respondents, and that travellers are nearly twice as likely to use smartphones than tablets during their travels: 85 percent (85%) of American travellers reported using smartphones while on holiday, while just 46 percent (46%) reported using tablets, citing a fear of missing out on news from their friends and families as a reason for staying connected. The survey results showed that U.S. travellers’ use of social media and mobile devices while on vacation was comparable to the global average for the 22 countries polled. Eighty-seven percent (87%) of global travellers reported using a smartphone while on holiday, compared to 44 percent (44%) who reported using a tablet while on a trip. Sixty-one percent (61%) of global travellers reported using social media while on vacation.

TOURISM AGENCY WILL ANALYZE TWEETS TO GAUGE TOURISTS’ NEEDS

The Japan Tourism Agency has announced that it will analyze tweets by foreign tourists during their visits to Japan, in an effort to make the country a more attractive destination for visitors from overseas.

Men are bosses. Women are just bossy. That’s one of the double-standards facing women in the workplace that is being explored in a new commercial. The spot from Pantene Philippines was released last month, but is now gaining worldwide attention online, in part because Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer at Facebook Inc. and author of the book Lean In posted the ad on her Facebook page. “This is one of the most powerful videos I have ever seen illustrating how when women and men do the same things, they are seen in completely different ways,” she wrote. The ad for the Procter & Gamble – owned beauty brand, made by the agency BBDO, features women and men going through their days, with adjectives labeling how their behaviour is perceived. A woman working late is “selfish”, for example, while a man doing the same is “dedicated.”

Consumer Confidence In Cruising Is Sinking Amid numerous reports of norovirus outbreaks on board cruise ships in 2014

A recent Harris poll shows that a rash of norovirus outbreaks on board several cruise ships since the start of 2014 has shaken the public’s perception of the cruise industry and made consumers less likely to cruise in 2014 than they were in 2013. The poll was conducted between Feb. 10 and 14, following norovirus incidents on Princess Cruises’ Caribbean Princess and Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas and Norwegian Star, with 54 per cent of respondents saying they were less likely to take a cruise now than they were a year ago. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were eight gastrointestinal illness outbreaks aboard cruise ships in the first 13 weeks of 2014, of which at least five have been attributed to norovirus.

An official at the agency said the government hopes to understand the needs of foreign tourists, as their numbers are expected to increase toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. A data processing company commissioned by the agency will be responsible for analyzing the tweets after purchasing data from the U.S. company Twitter Inc., according to the agency official. The data processing company will analyze the kinds of tweets often made by tourists from different countries, and based on the analysis, the agency will plan effective measures to attract foreign tourists and provide information to local governments, travel agencies and other sectors. “Making good use of Twitter has great possibilities since it allows us to check the effects of PR, find possible new sightseeing resources and so on. It should be possible to develop tourism more effectively if we combine the [Twitter] information collected with the GPS data,” said a senior official of the agency. So just remember, someone, somewhere maybe analyzing You!

If U.S. political leaders want to enact policies that facilitate GDP and jobs growth—and they certainly need to be doing that based on the indications of still-sluggish recovery—then they should be looking to the travel and tourism sector.

ata released by the C ommerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis strongly suggests that the travel industry is playing a pivotal role in leading the United States economic recovery.

92 percent for the U.S. economy overall. Inbound international travel—counted as an export—grew at a rate of 9.1 percent in 2013— more than four times faster than other goods and services—and remains the United States’ thirdlargest export.

The BEA’s first-ever estimates of GDP growth by industry show that travel posted the No. 2 growth rate of all U.S. industries in 2013, trailing only the agricultural sector.

“If U.S. political leaders want to enact policies that facilitate GDP and jobs growth—and they certainly need to be doing that based on the indications of still-sluggish recovery—then they should be looking to the travel and tourism sector,” said David Huether, senior vice president for research and economics at the U.S. Travel Association in a statement. “The BEA report just adds to the case that travel is the poster child for post-recession success. It benefits virtually every region of the country, its jobs are of outstanding quality, and it has achieved what it has with little or no assistance from the government.

In the fourth quarter, overall real GDP growth slowed to an annual pace of 2.6 percent while travel growth actually accelerated to a 4.2-percent rate in the fourth quarter. Travel dramatically outpaced the rest of the economy for the year, growing more than three percent compared to 1.9 percent for all sectors. Department of Labor statistics have found that the travel sector has recovered 138 percent of the jobs it lost in the recession, versus only

On the mat, I find a space where I can let go and off the mat it carries me throughout my whole day – literally. From the moment I wake up and take my first sigh, I am alive! Yoga is not just doing poses for me anymore, it is a way of life.

oga dates back to thousands of years ago, and emerged out of India – yoga’s birthplace. The western society came to populate it as to what we know today - this huge phenomenon that’s taking the fitness industry by storm. With yoga studios at every corner, countless designers selling stretchy pants and yoga conferences and retreats all over the world, it’s no surprise that yoga has a market in this busy lifestyle we live in. More and more people are taking yoga into their daily routines, including kids, which provide the perfect balance to any activity. Not only does it provide physical benefits such as flexibility, strength, balance and muscle toning, it also helps mentally to clear the mind and decrease levels of stress. If everyone takes at least 20 minutes everyday to move their body, breathe deeply and meditate, the world will be a better place. However, this is not the case. We are rushed in the morning, sometimes skip breakfast, rushed at work, then continue the cycle in the evening until we hit the sack forcefully and call it a day. Take the busy entrepreneur for example, working 9-5 is not the norm anymore; early mornings, late nights, give no time for practice. Who has time to take an hour of their day to get to a gym or studio when deadlines are on the line? We are now well into 2014 and this change needs to happen NOW. Yoga will always be on the list of top fitness trends for the year, so how you incorporate it into your life is up to you.

The Collaboration Of Everything By Ralph Niekamp

Collaboration is the current buzz

word of the audiovisual industry. I’ve always been a believer in “two-heads-are-better-than-one” rather than “one-person-has-all-the-answers”, and instead prefer to incorporate the best ideas from individuals into a group discussion. In today’s collaborative environments, it’s not “I talk, you listen” but rather a “we” environment. Collaboration is generally understood as the interaction of people working together, but in today’s technological world, collaboration is starting to include things.

Technology now provides new opportunities for people to work together. Video conferencing is a great way for people to work from a distance. People can share information and talk while seeing their counterparts’ facial expressions and body language. What is changing in video conferencing is the ability to connect with anyone, anywhere. Traditionally, a videoconference system could only work with another like system. Many systems now work with many other videoconference systems as well as PCs, laptops, tablets and smart phones. This has led to the rise of organizations implementing a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) strategy to increase timely collaboration. Public video conference room networks make enterprise level collaboration available to anyone. Michael Levesque of Resolve Collaboration says: “The use of public video conference room networks enables companies to ensure the best quality conference experience. Although mobile devices are great for connecting with the kids or a quick call home, it can be cumbersome and distracting to try and conduct an hour long interview while trying to hold your tablet still. The enterprise quality studios provide a stable reliable video conference environment where the participants can focus on the conversation and the technology is transparent. These facilities are typically established in professional business settings which add a layer of professionalism over the BYOD experience.”


Tech Talk Audience Response Systems (ARS) will become more commonplace. In my view there are several reasons that ARS’s have been under-utilized. The hardware cost can be substantial. There is also a software learning curve to overcome before ARS can be implemented into one meeting. As these systems have become more cloud based, these boundaries can be managed better. Delegates can BYOD. This reduces the cost for implementing the ARS and delegates are comfortable using their own device. With a cloud based ARS, an organization can scale it to fit into more events. This makes it easier to integrate ARS a part of an organization’s ongoing meeting, training and conference communications strategy. Boardrooms are also more interactive. Many monitors and projectors now have user-friendly interactive features that allow participants to wirelessly share their device screens. The interactive displays are the communication hub of many board and huddle rooms. Many projectors now offer interactive software capabilities such as annotation. The Epson Pro G projector series includes a split screen capability so two sources can be displayed simultaneously. This can also be a good video conference display solution for larger rooms. There are also many peripheral devices that support collaboration. For example: the ClickShare wireless presentation system has multiple dongles that enable multiple users to wirelessly connect simultaneously to a projector or monitor. Often the BYOD devices are personally owned, hence the name BYOD. Ironically, we used to think laptops were convenient and now they’re cumbersome to lug around. The employee can very easily bring their own

device to wherever they will collaborate and connect with the room’s AV system. Anyone who uses their own device must first become acquainted with how to connect their device for the purpose of a collaborative presentation. Grant McMechan, Inland AV Technical Services Manager, suggests not waiting until the last minute to learn how to connect. Plan ahead. If you need information, the quick and easy way to find out is to search the web as there are many offerings to answer your questions. Cisco futurist Dave Evans talks about the “Internet of Everything”, where people and things are connected via the internet. Our person-to-person communication can now add things-to-persons and things-to-things communication. “Cisco predicts that $4.6 trillion of value will be at stake in the public sector alone over the next decade, driven by connecting the unconnected through the Internet of Everything.” We will use increasingly new types of data, real-time data and lots of it. This will start with simple things like a sensor letting a recycling company know that a client’s bin is full and needs to be picked up. No longer will the client have to request a pick up or have a truck and crew needlessly provide a service when it is not required. The smart phone, smart workplace, smart home, smart car and many other “smart” things will soon join people in this art, science and craft of collaboration.

Russian tourism expected to drop by up to 30 percent

summer destinations revealed And it’s not Canada - price counts. As people across America gear up for summer vacation, new research reveals that low airfares are propelling many travelers to choose destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America. Airfare searches to these three regions represent nearly half of the Fly.com Top 50 International Summer Destinations for 2014 list. While European hot spots such as London, Paris and Rome remain popular, this year’s favorite international destination is Cancun, Mexico, where the average roundtrip airfare costs $127 less than last year. Roundtrip airfares to these cities dropped 8% on average, compared with 2013 prices. 2014 Top Summer Destinations:

Caribbean destinations represent nearly a quarter of the Fly.com Top 50. Average roundtrip airfares to the Caribbean are 4% less than the same period last year and some fares have decreased by as much as $359 roundtrip. Popular countries include Jamaica, Aruba and the Dominican Republic. Central American destinations also piqued travelers’ interest, where average fares to Costa Rica, Panama and El Salvador are down 7%. In contrast, the overall cost of a roundtrip flight to Europe is 6% higher than last summer. Flights to Athens (Greece) and Dublin (Ireland) are the best bets for travelers looking to fly across the pond on a budget. «It’s clear that the cost of airfare is playing a major role in vacation planning this summer,» said Warren Chang, vice president and general manager, Fly.com. «Purchase price and the appeal of shorter flights are making travelers think twice about Europe. Moving forward, we expect this trend to continue, especially in light of recent service expansions into Mexico and the Caribbean from carriers such as Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines.»

The Ukraine crisis threatens to reduce tourism to Russia by more than a fifth as perceived risks drive customers away, according to one of the largest tour operators working with foreign visitors. The flow of foreign tourists may drop 20 percent to 30 percent this year, said Alexander Maklyarovsky, head of incoming tourism at Moscow-based KMP Group.

Why are foreign tourists important?

“Most tourists visiting Russia are pensioners from the U.S. and Europe who are very sensitive to risks and to what they hear in the news,” said Maklyarovsky.

Spending by foreign tourists in Britain is set to rise 34 percent to over 27 billion pounds ($46 billion) a year by 2017, according to research published on Friday, boosting the country’s retail and leisure industries. A report commissioned for Barclays said an increase in spending by tourists from emerging economies such as China, Russia and the United Arab Emirates, together with loosening visa restrictions, would support the boost to Britain’s economy. By 2017, the UK retail sector is set to generate 9.3 billion pounds from tourists, an increase of 36 percent from 2013, while tourist spending on hotels, eating out and attractions will rise by a third to 14.7 billion pounds, the report forecast.

Russia’s recent annexation of Crimea and the continuing standoff with NATO countries over the fate of Ukraine caused the U.S. and the European Union to introduce sanctions against Russia. The dispute is threatening growth in the $2 trillion economy, including tourism in the country, which attracted 2.67 million visitors from abroad last year.

Under a hot tropical sun, I try to diversify both scenery and budgets by constantly looking for new places to suggest to planners. This time I came across an “all inclusive” located halfway between Ottawa and Montreal. Skeptical? I invite you to discover the NAV Centre, originally created to train personnel in charge of civil air traffic control security (NAV Canada). A RE-DESIGNED CENTRE The NAV Centre has undergone many changes as the new leaders are moving towards a more corporate market, but they wish to retain its traditional feel. What helped the work of the latest architects was, among other things, an already inspiring infrastructure. Natural light floods a majority of the rooms through the many windows in the buildings, and the corridors are lit by a glass roof. The core of the principal hall is a beautifully decorated courtyard filled with flowers in the summer. This is also what influenced the new manager to renovate the Centre. For example, a carpet in shades of pale green with circular motifs was chosen for certain locations to remind guests of nature and trees. The cafeteria has been replaced by a new restaurant. In addition to its modern areas, the Centre offers a choice of dishes and desserts without sugar, gluten or peanuts. The pool has been renovated and revitalized and a spa was built from scratch to meet the needs of a new target group.

The NAV Centre is not a convention centre or a hotel; it is a versatile, flexible and very affordable location for groups of 5 to 500 people.

In summer, guests can rent bicycles to ride along the river or explore the nearby trail. On site professionals offer workshops ranging from yoga to aerobics and Zumba.

If your group does not exceed 25 people, I highly recommend renting the Stone House. Built in the 19th century, it was restored keeping its old world charm, including the flooring on the ground level. Outside is a large green space overlooking the river where BBQs are common. More affordable than you think, you can reserve the Stone House for minimal fees. Aside from the Stone House, room rentals are offered if your group stays on site. Let’s see, what did I miss? A casino, six skating rinks and a golf course, all within 15 minutes drive. Did I mention they are members of IACC? Frankly, I challenge you to think of something that they have not thought of.

It is generally bad business practice to speak poorly of one of your all-time top-selling products, but since our priority is to provide our clients with what they need, not just with what they want, the educator in me is willing to take the risk.

Amazing Races and scavenger hunts can be a lot fun and a welcomed break from a meeting or conference, however there are some fundamental components about them that may be quite contrary to what business leaders hope to get out of a team building event. Simply put, amazing-races and traditional scavenger hunts do not meet the needs of today’s business world. If leaders want their teams to be inspired and motivated to do better, reach higher, be more innovative and be more collaborative, then why wouldn’t they expect these to be practiced and re-enforced in a team-building event? I’m amazed at how many companies settle for ordinary team building experiences when they claim to want to achieve extraordinary results with their teams!

Imagine the following scenario: A perfectly synchronized cheer from 55 managers explodes as the final puzzle piece is placed on the table and the secret message is revealed. How did they go from running around Montreal’s underground city as eleven separate teams, to completing a 600-piece puzzle as ONE TEAM in less than 18 minutes? In early 2013 a major Canadian food chain merged their Quebec and Atlantic Canada sales and marketing departments and were meeting in Montreal for the first time as one team. The director of business development wanted an engaging, innovative and creative way to help this new team put into practice the theme of their meeting which was “working together as one strategically aligned unit”. The initial request was for an amazing race style activity that would take the participants outside of the meeting room and allow them to discover the city while engaging in a team-oriented challenge. After a couple of phone conversations it was decided that the best approach would be to create a “collaborative competition” that combined elements from an amazing race with an our innovative Hi-Tech Rally and “Extraordinary Puzzle Challenge”. In a typical scavenger hunt or amazing race, teams use maps and clues to find different destinations where they then complete teamoriented missions. The team that completes the circuit in the least amount of time, with the least penalties, wins.

Inevitably, during these activities, teams want to know if they are winning or losing and how the other teams are doing. Unfortunately, in a low-tech version of the game there is no way of knowing how teams are doing until times, scores and penalties are tallied at the end. Wouldn’t it be great if teams could have their missions scored instantly so that they know if their strategy is working? Wouldn’t it be motivating to see how the other teams are doing.... and know just how many extra points you need to win? Wouldn’t it be interesting to be able to collaborate with other teams to gain a mutual advantage? Isn’t this feedback and the desire to know how their performance is impacting the team what employees are asking for on a daily basis? It is for these reasons TBMOQ has developed innovative technologybased games that meet these real business needs. This combination of the effective use of technology and the perfect blend of compelling challenges required participants to live the paradigm shift that the director was trying to encourage. They willingly went from competition to collaboration before they even realized what happened!

New Must-See Meeting Spaces in Halifax

Halifax is a premier destination for meetings and conventions. Upcoming developments include the opening of the new Halifax Convention Centre and a central library offering new meeting space. Halifax will also offer a host of new transportation and activity offerings for meeting planners. The Halifax Convention Centre is a brand new multi-level structure opening

in the heart of downtown Halifax in 2016. It will feature approximately 120,000 square feet of meeting space, a 30,000+ square-foot ballroom overlooking the city and 40,000 feet of exhibit space. The Halifax Convention Centre is part of The Nova Centre, which will contain a luxury hotel, retail, parking and natural gathering space.

The World Trade and Convention Centre (WTCC) currently has the

The WTCC has three floors of multi-purpose meeting and banquet rooms which include flexible meeting space, luxurious reception areas and comfortable conversation spaces. Fully integrated with the WTCC is the 10,000 seat Halifax Metro Centre, a major full service trade show, expo, sporting event and entertainment facility. The WTCC’s newly renovated executive meeting and reception space located on the 8th floor boasts one of the city’s best panoramic views of the Halifax harbour - one of the deepest and largest natural harbours in the world. The WTCC is connected to the Halifax LINK pedway system – one of the largest in North America. Guests get quick access to more than 1,000 four-star hotel rooms, shopping, restaurants and more, all within five minutes.

The Halifax Central Library is aiming to open in 2014, on Spring Garden Rd.

The library will have private bookable meeting rooms, with capacity ranging from 4 to 100. There will be a performance area, Paul O’Regan Hall, with a capacity of 250. It will be available for rental outside of library hours and will have a separate entrance. New transportation and activity options will expand the breadth of meeting and convention offerings in Halifax. •

Nova Star Cruises will launch a Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Portland, Maine ferry service in May 2014. The sailing season will run May 15—October 31 with daily, roundtrip service within 24 hours between the two ports.

The Discovery Centre will move to its waterfront location near the Halifax Seaport Market in 2015.

Halifax Museum of Natural History will open a new, permanent exhibit dedicated to Sable Island, Nova Scotia’s enigmatic sand bar where wild horses roam.

Travel another hour and the place names and dialect are French. As an island many of these coastal communities were only accessible by boat and only in the spring/summer hence the forming of their own dialect. And the only form of entertainment, was storytelling and music. They were an integral part of the community and have stood the test of time and are an important part of the visitor’s experience. The scenery of the coastal communities that seem untouched in many ways, the music and the stories are all things that set the destination apart from all others but none more that the colourful characters of this place. The people of the place are the friendliest folk you will meet no matter the cove, gut or neck you wonder into.

St. John’s Newfoundland has become one of the most desirable destinations in Canada to host meetings, conferences and events. It is interesting to note that delegates of conferences held in St. John’s tend to travel with more people and stay longer than when they travel to other destinations. 50-60% of delegates surveyed extended their stay in our province.
